WOODEN SPOON 1st Thursday newsletter NOVEMBER 2018
WITH THANKS TO OUR NOVEMBER SPONSORS
Intro from chairman Welcome to our November edition of our ‘First Thursday Newsletter’. We continue to be active in raising funds for projects in the region. ‘First Thursday’ continues to go from strength to strength. We now are selling out our monthly events so to guarantee your place please become a member of the charity. We are delighted to say that we do have sponsors lined up in the short term for ‘First Thursday’ but if you wish to sponsor an event then please drop us a line. We do have over 200 members in the region and over 500 followers on twitter so our ‘First Thursday’ is great value all round. Our next fund raising event is the Race Night which is now sold out! If you want to go on the waiting list (in case of cancellations) please call Laura. We are delighted that we will have 2 runners in the 2019 London Marathon. We wish Chris and Anita well in their training and I’m sure we will support them in their fundraising. We are always looking for projects to support. If you know or are aware of a local children’s charity that may need support please do not hesitate to let us know. Better still get them to come along to First Thursday! We are also looking for companies/clubs that may wish to make us their ‘charity of the year’ for 2019. If you would like to support us please let us know. If you are not a member of Spoon (yet) please do fill out a form. Your help really makes a difference. Please visit our web site www.woodenspoon.org.uk or look out for us on social media to see the great work of the charity in Worcestershire and the rest of the UK and Ireland. Thank you for your continued support; it really makes a difference. It’s a great club!
Broster Buchanan Proud to Support Wooden Spoon Putting charitable support high up on their agenda, Broster Buchanan have held three annual charity golf tournaments since their inception in 2015 raising well over £10,000. Each tournament consists of a regional qualifier in the North, South and Midlands, and the proceeds have gone straight to a local charity, each with a strong focus on supporting children and young people. In 2019 Broster Buchanan are proud to announce that through their Midlands qualifier they will be supporting Wooden Spoon, the children’s charity of rugby. Kevin Moran, Managing Director, Broster Buchanan said, “I would like to express my thanks to Wooden Support for enabling us to support them. Everyone here at Broster Buchanan is passionate about working for a business that gives something back, and having read the many case studies about what this charity does to positively transform the lives of children and young people with a disability or facing disadvantage across the UK, we are determined to raise as much as we can for such a thoroughly deserving charity.” Broster Buchanan will be hosting their next annual golf tournament during the Summer 2019 at various locations around the UK. The Midlands qualifier will be held at Edgbaston Golf Course. If you would like to find out more please don’t hesitate to contact Gemma Ingram at gemmaingram@brosterbuchanan.com

A note from our sponsors Two become one as Worcestershire accountancy firms merge WORCESTER-based CB Chartered Accountants has merged with Haines Watts as part of the national accountancy firm’s ongoing expansion plans. The deal will see Haines Watts welcome a new partner, CB Chartered Accountants founder and Managing Partner John Painter, and his team of ten. Chris Hobbs, CB’s former Tax Partner, will take on the role of Tax Consultant. CB’s offices in Worcester and Tewkesbury will be rebranded with the office in Tewkesbury becoming Haines Watts’ first permanent base in Gloucestershire. Tim Pearce, Managing Partner of Haines Watts Worcester, said: “We’re delighted to be joining forces with John and his team. We’ve known each other for many years and I trained with John and Chris from 2002 to 2005, right at the start of my accountancy career. As soon as I knew that a deal with them was possible, I was determined to make it happen. It feels like I’ve come full circle. The merger is good news for local businesses as we’ll continue to offer outstanding customer service to existing and new clients and are looking forward to building the Haines Watts brand in Worcester, Evesham and Tewkesbury.” A top 15 accountancy firm, Haines Watts prides itself on supporting business owners by providing hands on accountancy, taxation and business advice. It works alongside a range of businesses across many sectors including healthcare, leisure and manufacturing and, like CB, specialises in working with family-owned businesses. John Painter added: “Working with Tim and his colleagues is a strong step forward as it secures the quality of advice that our clients are looking for. As an accredited Mindshop facilitator I look forward to working with existing Haines Watts clients to help them grow and develop their own businesses.” As a result of the deal, Haines Watts Senior Manager James Howard and his CB counterpart Dan Jackson have been promoted to Associates while Client Manager Gareth Williams has been promoted to Cloud and Outsourcing Manager and Zoe Jones to Practice Manager. Chris Orr taking on the Marathon for Wooden Spoon Hi, I’m Chris and I’m running the London Marathon on 28th April 2019 for Wooden Spoon because it’s a fantastic charity and I am, frankly, mad! If you know me at all, then you will know that I used to be a keen runner. You will also know that over the last two years I’ve enjoyed a pint (or ten) and a kebab more than I have an hour pounding the pavement. Well, now it’s time for that to change. Vince Hopkins and Laura Bligh are good friends of mine and both are involved in Wooden Spoon in Worcestershire. Vince was looking for a dynamic, wellconnected, and enthusiastic runner to take on the London Marathon on behalf of Wooden Spoon. Instead he asked me. The longest run I have ever done is 10 miles. Therefore, 26.2 miles seems a bit insane. However, after doing Strictly Worcestershire, walking 50km along the Thames, and more, I quite fancy the challenge. Wooden Spoon is a fantastic charity that I have supported through membership and attendance of their 1st Thursday events for several years. All the money raised by Wooden Spoon is used to support disadvantaged children and young people to help them access the same opportunities as others. I need to raise a minimum £2,000, which will go to Wooden Spoon and a portion of which will come back to Worcestershire. However, here’s the really important bit:- Every penny over £2,000 will stay in Worcestershire to be used to support young people in our County. As the Chair of Worcestershire Advance and a member of the Worcestershire Ambassadors I am hoping to raise a minimum of £5,000. Any amount you can give will make a huge difference to the lives of young people in our County. I will update you regularly as I suffer through aches and pains and struggle to get my ‘larger than it used to be’ body up to running 26.2 miles by April 2019 #PrayforChris www.justgiving.com/fundraising/chris-orr-wa
