2 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - JUNE 2012
ED’S MESSAGE
Hello...
Welcome to the very first issue of Modern Vintage Magazine! So what does ‘modern-vintage’ mean and why is it different to every other vintage rag? MVM are a group of writers who love ‘vintage’. Some of us are very knowledgeable about 20th century fashions, movies and music, some have a background in social history and some just adore polka dots, pin ups and ruby red lips! We love having the best of both worlds; modern attitudes and vintage glamour; genuine antiques and the convenience of vintage inspired, modern products. Whether you are an out and out vintage enthusiast or just someone with an interest in the past, we hope you find something to enjoy
amongst our pages….if you don’t then why not write something for us?! We love to increase our circle of friends, so get in touch. The best thing about the vintage community is just that...the community. If you’ve attended a vintage inspired event, found a great shop or heard an old song that gives you goosebumps, let us know about it and we’ll let everyone else know about it! I’ll be the one trying to keep some sort of order amongst the giddy and glamorous motley crew that is MVM. So from all of us, we hope you enjoy the very first issue of Modern Vintage Magazine. ED

DISCOVER VINTAGE - Organising Events since 2009 DISCOVER VINTAGE HAS BEEN ORGANISING VINTAGE EVENTS SINCE 2009 AND AS A BUSINESS TAKING PRIDE IN ENSURING THAT ALL OF THEIR VISITORS HAVE THE MOST MEMORABLE AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCES POSSIBLE. By creating exhilarating atmospheres that transport you back in time, it would be fair to say that authenticity and originality is what they are truly passionate about, especially with events like The Vintage Home Show, The Vintage Wedding Fair and the Festival of Vintage under their umbrella. Their expertise is in vintage from the jazzy 1920s to the funky 70s and they centre all of their events on this dateline to bring you an eclectic mix of items to suit all tastes. Plus they are always thinking of quirky new ideas to keep things fresh! In fact, just this year they introduced vintage lovers to The Vintage Home Show that pays homage to the home with everything from quirky glass and ceramics to bold mid-century furniture, funky textiles and colourful art. One of their most treasured events is The Vintage Wedding Fair, where they offer brides everything they need for a perfect vintage wedding; from photographers, flowers and favours to accessories, jewellery, and stationary... not to mention over 400 vintage wedding dresses available (all original from the 1920s-1970s)!
In fact it has been known for brides to plan their entire wedding at one of these events so if you are planning an authentic 1940s wedding or just want to add a more personal touch to your day then The Vintage Wedding Fair is the place to be! Our next one is in Liverpool on 2nd September and then Harrogate on 30th September.
If you are looking for everything under one roof then it may well be worth popping along to Discover Vintage’s largest event - Festival of Vintage. This is one big celebration of all things vintage where you can explore your favourite era, learn how to dance, watch old films, browse classic car collections, shop, listen to live music and watch vintage fashion parades.
Ever wanted to be transformed into your favourite classic film star? No problem. Discover Vintage have a beauty parlour with a team of highly talented hair and make-up artists on hand to assist you! It really is a huge event and is a vintage lover’s dream! Make sure you don’t miss out; the next one is at Epsom Racecourse on 23rd September.

Angelique Noire THIS STATUESQUE BEAUTY HAS ENJOYED YEARS OF SUCCESS AS A CONVENTIONAL MODEL, BUT NOTICING THAT WOMEN OF COLOUR WERE UNDER-REPRESENTED IN PIN UP MODELING, SHE DECIDED TO DRAW ON HER LOVE OF VINTAGE GLAMOUR AND EMBARK ON A WHOLE NEW STYLE OF MODELING, WITH A BRAND NEW NAME. IN 2011, ANGELIQUE NOIRE WAS BORN! You have been a very successful model for some 15 years now, but entered the world of pin-up modeling just last year. What made you become a pin-up model? “I didn’t just decide to become a pinup model. I just wanted to take pictures in this style, being that it is my favorite, and I don’t get the opportunity to do this for mainstream modeling. It began
8 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - JUNE 2012
as a hobby for me. I didn’t see many pin-up models with my skin tone, so I decided to show that the pinup doesn’t have to have white skin and/or be covered with tattoos. What initially began as just a hobby has grown to be much more.”
In your photographs we see you wearing some amazing outfits, do you wear vintage or vintage inspired clothes everyday?
“Most of the outfits in my photos are vintage inspired. It’s not easy to find vintage clothes that fit my measurements without having to do alterations and I often style my own shoots. I do own some vintage dresses and accessories and wish to add more to my wardrobe. I don’t dress daily in the pinup or classic style of the 1950s because of my profession as a mainstream model. When I go to castings, they want me to have natural looking makeup or none at all and fitted casual clothing (jeans and a tank top). It’s a 2-3 hour undertaking to primp and preen myself to do this type of look, and it draws a lot of attention that I don’t always care to have in public. “
What’s the best thing about pin-up modeling? “Of course I love the styling from head to toe. The 1940s to early 60s are my favorite time in fashion.” What’s the worst thing?
“The lack of diversity. Not only is there a lack of ethnic pinup styled models getting published and even less featured with a cover but it is tiresome seeing the same types of photos. It’s easy to churn out Vargas style pinup photos, but at least do something that makes them unique. There are some pinup magazines who publish images that have the same set designs/studio shots and even at times with the same outfit and just a different woman! I think it lacks creativity....often giving formulated images which are duplicated over and over again. “
Your job as a pin-up model must have taken you to some amazing places, what has been the best experience so far?
“My job as a mainstream model has taken me to amazing places, not yet pinup modeling. There are several amazing places that I have traveled to work, but one of my most memorable has to be when I worked in Kauai for a week for Talbots. I flew my kids and husband at the time out
there to join me. My kids were very young, but they remember parts of it to this day, especially the helicopter ride we did around the beautiful island. “
What advice would you give to readers with ambitions to become a pin-up model?
“Check your ambitions for becoming a pinup model. If you think it’s going to be glamorous work, where you are catered to and get paid handsomely for playing dress up, then you will be disappointed. Go in doing this because you love the style. Do this because you like getting a makeover and capturing yourself at your best to share with friends and family.
Go in doing what you love and hopefully great things blossom from your efforts. “ You have been dubbed a rising star within the pin up modeling industry, what are your plans for the future? “My goal is to continue to do what I love. I will carry on being actively involved in creating images inspired by classic 1950s photos. My aim is to be highly visible worldwide in the mainstream and pinup world as an example of a modern pinup; different than that of the stereotypical looking pinup. I also have plans to sell the accessories that I make too. Stay tuned to my Facebook page, because when I start selling t-shirts and my one of a kind pieces they will be showcased there. “ ( https:// www.facebook.com/pages/PinUp-Angelique-Noire-Like-MePage/216850215028305 )

The late, great Elizabeth Taylor ‘I adore wearing gems, but not because they are mine. You can’t possess radiance, you can only admire it.’
12 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - JUNE 2012
As it is announced that a somewhat controversial movie of her life is about to be filmed, with none other than Lindsay Lohan taking the lead, Modern Vintage takes a look at the star that is Dame Elizabeth Taylor. Born in the suburbs of North-West London in 1932, Dame Elizabeth Taylor was always going to be a star. The daughter of an art dealer and an actress, Elizabeth moved to Los Angeles with her family at the beginning of World War Two and right into the middle of Hollywood society. Francis and Sara Taylor were urged by many of their friends to take their daughter for screen testing. Eventually they gave in and Elizabeth Taylor stared in her first film, ‘There’s One Born Every Minute’, aged 9. But Elizabeth would gain international stardom with her portrayal of Velvet Brown in ‘National Velvet’ aged twelve.
“Some of my best leading men have been dogs and horses.” ELIZABETH TAYLOR’S LOVE FOR JEWELLERY WAS WORLD FAMOUS. HERE SHE IS WITH LA PEREGRINA, A PEAR SHAPED PEARL DISCOVERED IN THE 16TH CENTURY AND SET INTO A NECKLACE OF PEARLS AND RUBIES. IT WAS A VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT FROM RICHARD BURTON
Elizabeth Taylor would go on to make scores of films, often the leading lady and always regarded as one of the World’s most beautiful women. In many ways Elizabeth was as famous for her private life as she was for her professional achievements, but they should not be forgotten. The recipient of countless awards including three BAFTAs and 3 Academy Awards, she was awarded Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1999.
‘IT IS STRANGE THAT THE YEARS TEACH US PATIENCE; THAT THE SHORTER OUR TIME, THE GREATER OUR CAPACITY FOR WAITING. ‘ A committed and generous humanitarian, Elizabeth Taylor spent much of her life campaigning for various charitable organisations but notably The American Foundation for Aids Research, of which she was a co-founder. At a time when very few high profile voices were speaking out about the illness, Elizabeth was a voice for research and support.
BORN WITH TWO SETS OF EYELASHES, TAYLOR WASN’T ALWAYS ACCEPTED AS A CHILD STAR. MANY DIRECTORS DISLIKED WORKING WITH HER, CLAIMING SHE HAD ‘ADULT’S EYES AND AN OLD SOUL’. SHE WOULD GROW INTO THOSE ‘ADULT’S EYES’ AND BECOME A STAR!
What do you think of the up and coming Elizabeth Taylor biopic? Are you excited, intrigued or disappointed? Let us know.

Eclectic
Eccentricity
Lucy Crick began Eclectic Eccentricity as a weekend hobby back in 2004 when she worked as a gift shop manager. After a few pieces sold well through the shop, she decided to take the big leap and turn EE into a full time job. In 2007, with just £200 to invest into making her dream a reality – Lucy bought business cards and a website and ventured into the great unknown! Eclectic Eccentricity did not grow overnight; from it’s humble beginnings on her living room floor, Lucy’s business flourished into something bigger than she ever could have dreamed. For years she lived and breathed jewellery; devoting hours to creating new pieces, sourcing vintage and modern components to imagining new stories. EE is now run by a team of a dozen (exceptionally smiley) people and is regularly featured in major magazines such as Marie Claire, Grazia and Vogue.
ECLECTIC ECCENTRICITY HAS A SMALL ARMY OF CELEBRITY FANS Eclectic Eccentricity has become well known amongst fashionistas and vintage lovers. What did it feel like when you realized that your pieces were becoming so popular? I’m still a little overwhelmed when I spot someone in the street wearing EE, I don’t think that will ever change! It was on July 6th 2007 when I realised EE had a following (that’s a very precise date!). EE was featured by the website Daily Candy and the feature went live about 9am in the morning. I’d been out all morning at a job interview and when I came back, the website had crashed because it’d been inundated with people. All the stock was sold out – it was crazy! The rest of
Eclectic Eccentricity produces vintage jewellery with a story to tell. 16 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - JUNE 2012
that month was a blur of dispatching orders, making new stock, talking to press….. funnily enough, I didn’t accept the job I had interviewed for!
What has been the most popular piece to date? We have several iconic EE pieces but I would say Winging My Way Back To You has been our run-away best seller. It features a gemstone globe with hand-inlaid mother of pearl continents, and above, a lone brass swallow swoops around. It has the perfect story: wherever you are in the world, you’re never far from those you love. It’s been featured by Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire and worn by Eliza Doolittle and Peaches Geldof. It’s even stocked in the National Gallery in London! My favourite though is a gentleman who bought it for his girlfriend for Christmas last year – he was a soldier stationed in Afghanistan over the holiday period and he wanted his girlfriend to know that he was there with her, despite being so far away. His gift message was beautiful.
Eclectic Eccentricity boasts quite a fan base including many famous faces. Who is your favourite celebrity fan?
WHEN I FIND A BOX FULL OF AMAZING TRINKETS, STORIES IMMEDIATELY START TO POP INTO MY HEAD, AND I THINK THAT’S WHAT EE IS ALL ABOUT – APPRECIATING THE HISTORY OF A PIECE BUT ADDING SOMETHING NEW.
ELIZA DOOLITTLE
LEAH WELLER
That’s a toughie. Eliza Doolittle has a massive fan base here in the EE office and she was also one of the first celebrities to be seen wearing EE. She has several of our pieces now and she a parade of swooping birds, all following the other. It’s very was recently quoted by the Daily Express, as saying we were her simple and goes with everything! favourite jewellery company! Paloma Faith is also awesome; she’s incredibly sweet and quickly sent us a picture of her wearing Do you have anything exciting about to be released? Can her ‘C’est La Vie’ necklace. Also, Sarah Cawood; possibly the nicest we have a sneaky peek? celebrity in the world ever. She regularly tweets us and last week sent us a little card! It has pride of place in the office! Oh, we do actually! We have a brand new range about to launch at the end of June. It’s inkeeping with EE’s existing lines and still You continue to produce jewelry that is on trend whilst still uses vintage brass and unusual glass beads as it’s core, but it’s staying true to the vintage appeal that first made Eclectic entirely different to the other pieces. I can’t say too much and ruin the big surprise (I promise it’s worth the wait!) but expect some Eccentricity so popular. Where do you find your inspiraangular lines and 1930s inspired art deco-ness! tion?
I KNOW IT’S A BIT OF A CLICHÉ, BUT REALLY – INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE! I carry a notebook with me everywhere I go and make random comments or doodles which then get translated into jewellery. The actually components themselves suggest so many stories.
Do you wear your own designs? I do! I’m a bit of a geek so I can be seen most often sporting either a dinosaur or a space shuttle! I’m also in love with birds (you may notice a theme on the website….) so if I could create a necklace with a bird, a space shuttle and a dinosaur on, I would. There’s probably a limit to how eccentric I can go though.
What is your favourite piece? I have so many! I think ‘Follow The Leader’ is up there; it features

The Perfect Red Lips 20 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - JUNE 2012
SEEN AS A SIGN OF We like Contour a Levres in Rouge from Boujois. (http://www. PATRIOTISM DURING Soyeaux, bourjois.co.uk/catalog/make_up/lips/ WORLD WAR TWO, OF lip_pencils/lip_pencil) ALL VINTAGE LOOKS, 3. APPLY LIPSTICK. apply your lipstick right to the edges THE RED LIP IS THE Don’t of your lip; leave a tiny space. This will help prevent the lipstick ‘bleeding’. Blot MOST ICONIC your lips with a little tissue and apply Many women are scared of wearing red lipstick, they needn’t be. There is a shade out there for everyone. Whether you prefer the authentic matte vintage red or a super glossy Marilyn Monroe look, the method for applying the perfect red pout remains the same.
1. ALWAYS APPLY TO CONDITIONED LIPS.
Exfoliate lips by rubbing gently with a dry towel and then apply a small amount of moisturizer or a lip balm. We like Wild Rose Lipbalm, from Cath Kidston. (http://www.cathkidston. co.uk/p-14083-cath-kidston-wild-roselip-balm.aspx)
2.
APPLY LIP-LINER.
Start on your bottom lip and draw a line from the centre out to the corners. Do the same on the top lip starting from the centre of your cupid’s bow, out to the corners. Try to stay on the natural line of your lips. Now completely cover your lips with the liner and allow to dry.
lipstick again.
We like Lip Paint in Pillar Box, from BarryM (http://www.barrym.com/lippaint)
4.
MATTE OR GLOSS?
Now you have to decide whether to stay matte or go gloss! If you decide on a glossy lip, don’t apply gloss right to the edges. As with the lipstick, this will reduce ‘bleeding’. We like Pocket Rocket Lip Gloss in ‘Colin’, from Urban Decay (http://www. urbandecay.com/pocket-rocket-lipgloss/197,default,pd.html?start=3&cgid=2)
In recent times, fashion has leant towards more muted tones and neutral glosses. But as interest in vintage style increases, the scarlet pout is back! Long may it remain.
Which shade will work for me? Pale skinned darlings will ravish in reds with blue undertones. Medium or olive skinned honeys will rock reds with a base of orange. Dark Skinned beauties will look radiant in red with hints of pink.

“I woke fair as

FEATURED EVENT
Judy’s affordable fair Kerry Clark, creator of vintage lifestyle blog Missy Vintage reviews one of the UK’s leading vintage fairs. It was a grey old day in Norwich when Judy’s affordable vintage fair came to town. I woke up quite excited to be attending a fair as a punter and not working it. Having opened my curtains that morning to be greeted with a sky filled with clouds tinged with various shades of charcoal, I hope the fair would brighten up the weekend. I braved the rain and arrived at the venue feeling like I had beaten nature - a quick check on the victory rolls gave a feeling of relief that they were still intact. Hoorah!
ARMED WITH MY TRUSTY CAMERA, A HEART FOR VINTAGE AND A PURSE ON A LEMONADE BUDGET I SET TO WORK.
The venue for this fair was St. Andrew’s Hall which is a big big space to fill and having been to several other fairs there, I have to say that my first thought was that there weren’t as many stalls as I’d expected. I’ve never been to a ‘Judy’s Affordable Fair’ before, I’ve read lots of reviews; mostly good, a few not so. Unfortunately there can be a snobbish elitism in the vintage world who have described fairs like this as ‘’down-market’’. So before I tell you what I thought of the fair, I’ll tell you where I stand on vintage......... For me affordable vintage is what it’s all about. That’s how I’ve built up the wardrobe I have. I like to dress 40s/50s. That doesn’t mean I wear only items from this era. I only own one piece that is *possibly* 40s and as that’s home made it can be tricky to date accurately. I wear a lot of 70s and yes 80s items. But I select pieces that in my opinion lend themselves to the eras of fashion that I enjoy. The later decades often nod back to the previous ones, for example 80s dresses can often look very 50s. Guess what, I also wear...............

Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair
polyester........ *gasp* Yes those dresses that some (not all) vintage lovers screw their noses up at. The ‘I heart polyester’ declaration is a whole different article, but in brief - it’s a purse friendly way to get a look, it stretches (any girl who’s tried on a non-stretch dress, only to find it fits perfectly at the hips and waist but not at the bust will understand me on this) and it’s easy to care for. Small but perfectly formed is how I’d describe this fair. Despite there not being as many sellers as I’d expected.
The amount of vintage the sellers had was plentiful and the variety a feast for the eyes. There was no shortage of bargains with some rails having items from £5. Yes there was a fair amount of polyester but there were also lots and lots for those that were looking for something else. Some beautiful 40s and 50s dresses were on offer, some needed TLC but in my opinion they’d been priced to reflect that they would need some work. There were also some great home-wares for those who want to add a vintage touch to more than just the contents of their wardrobe. The prices were as affordable as promised and there was a good range of items for both sexes and the home.
There were also rolls and rolls of vintage fabric for the sewers out there. Fabric in this quantity is something I’d never seen at a fair before. One of the things that is actually now gracing my bookshelf is a Brownie flash, which I snapped up for a bargain at £3! I love anything camera related and I knew I had to bring this home with me as soon as I saw it. I also got 3 scarves for £5, and a blue and white striped 80’s does 50s dress for £12. A Most Curious Party provided the tea room, which is always worth a visit and the area had plenty of seating too: sometimes tea rooms at fairs don’t get the space they need.

For me, tea served in beautiful china is all part of the experience and helps the visit feel like more of an outing. The girls were sporting some amazing hair created by local stylist Flamingo Amy and a scrumptious selection of cupcakes provided by local business Cupcakes By Jess, that as always were almost too pretty to eat. Almost...... There was also......... booze, and mighty delicious it was too! Crabbies (alcoholic ginger beer) were on hand if you fancied something other than tea. You could drink it there or take it away and at 3 bottles for £5 I did just that. After I’d researched some flavours of course. It’s also worth mentioning how exceptionally friendly some of the sellers were. It always amazes me when I meet sellers who obviously just don’t like the public! You’ve met some like that too I’m sure? I’m now really curious to go to another Judy’s fair and I’m interested to see what the Spitalfields one is like, as it’s just a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street station there’s every chance I’ll be finding out. I’ll keep you posted.

MARK YOUR TERRITORY WITH THIS TOTALLY AWESOME WINDBREAK MADE FROM RECYCLED BOAT SAILS.
CAMPING ESSENTIALS
BoutiqueCamping.com
GO FOR THE ULTIMATE CLAMPING EXPERIENCE WITH A BELL TENT FROM BOUTIQUE CAMPING.
CAMPING IS NOT JUST FOR SCOUTS AND GIRL GUIDES, IT HAS BECOME QUITE FASHIONABLE IN RECENT YEARS. Sleeping under canvas, especially in a festival field, is not the most glamorous environment; but just because you are ‘roughing it’ doesn’t mean you cant bring a little vintage flair to proceedings. Follow our top tips for a perfect, trouble free, camping experience.
1. Check The Rules PicnicFun.com
COMPLETE BASKET FOR 2 FOR THE ELEGANT AND ROMANTIC PICNIC
Most countries have areas where wild camping is allowed, but there are restrictions. Check beforehand and if in doubt, go with a camp-site. There will be rules attached to the use of every campsites and festivals have restrictions too. Check before taking dogs, glass bottles, gazebos and stoves.
2. Pitch Your Tent
The position of your pitch can affect your whole camping experience. Whether at a festival, in a campsite or wild camping, choose a spot near a visible landmark but not too close to paths; at a festival you don’t want to be trampled on at 5am and elsewhere you don’t want to get in the way of people walking! Try to pitch near the top of a hill; if the weather turns, you don’t want rain running into your sleeping bag. Soggy
28 MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE - JUNE 2012
clothes don’t look good on anybody. At festivals avoid the toilets and any large trees….you don’t want to be in the path of any ‘bathroom emergencies’!!
3. Be Visible
There’s nothing worse than coming back to a campsite and not being able to locate your tent. After a while, all tents start to look remarkably similar so make yours unique. For glamorous vintage lovers, this is an opportunity to express your sense of style. Maybe a flag, some bunting or quirky seating. If your site allows them, a gazebo can act as a handy marker for your pitch. If the weather is less than brilliant, it will keep the rain off and create a natural area for everyone to congregate.
4. Little Luxuries
Camping can be as basic or as luxurious as you like. With the rise in popularity of ‘glamping’, you can sleep on a bed, with lighting and wardrobe rails, all under canvas! But most of us would prefer a more traditional camping experience. An inflatable mattress will be worth it’s weight in gold, wherever you are camping, as a good nights sleep makes for a good days exploring, relaxing or ‘festivalling’. Chairs, a stove and somewhere to eat and socialize will turn a humble pitch into an outdoor hotel!
5. Don’t lock your tent
Don’t put a padlock on your tent. Locking it wont make your property any more secure; if somebody wants to get into your tent, they will do whether its locked or not! Having a lock,
only alerts would-be thieves to the fact that you may have valuables inside. Some festivals and camp sites offer lock-up facilities, if you must bring valuable items then use them, but if possible, leave them at home. We all want to look glamorous, but maybe a campsite/festival isn’t the place for those expensive shoes, your favourite vintage dress or your new necklace? Try to take one set of accessories that will work with all the clothes that you are taking.
leave a campsite in good condition and although it is not always the norm amongst festival goers to clean up after themselves, we think it is good manners to do so.
9. Don’t Forget Essentials
There are some things that we just can’t do without...
You don’t have a fridge so don’t take too many perishable items. Fruit juice, cereal bars and single serving milk and sugar are ideal for use when camping as they will stay fresh for your entire trip. If you really want to cook fresh meats etc, do it on your first day.
Tea bags (essential) Cups (we are civilized creatures after all) Facial wipes Anti-bacterial gel Toilet roll Dry Shampoo Spray (desperate times…) Cutlery (we like ‘sporks’) A torch Somewhere to sit (cushions or chairs) A washing line (strong bunting can double up) Duct tape (great for emergency tent repairs) Wellies (because you never know when the weather will turn!) Suncream (because you never now when the weather will turn!!!) First Aid Kit Red Lippy – so that you’re always ready for a close-up
8. Leave No Sign
PUT THE GLAM IN GLAMPING
6. Bring a bigger tent
Although it is easier to carry a small two-man tent, oftentimes they barely fit two people at all, let alone any of your clothing or equipment! Take a tent that is at least one man bigger than you need, the extra space will be invaluable when you come back to the tent with muddy clothes.
7. Take Less Food
Whether you are at a festival, in a campsite or wild camping, clean up after yourself. When camping in the wild, you should leave the site exactly how you find it. It is good practice to

Five ’40s Dresses That Capture the Era BY SAMMYDVINTAGE.COM
Dresses for the 40’s Lover in You 1940s dresses are one of the more popular vintage styles of clothing that the modern girl wears today.
It’s easy to see why ’40s fashion is so adored by the 21st century girl — styles were constructed for fit, flattery and function. Austere-leaning fashion became trendy during the war torn ’40s, and women valued dresses that reflected the era’s ethos for patriotic and classic styles. Silk was replaced with rayon material, girdles were tossed for elastic waistbands and novelty print design gave the more simple, fabric-conserving styles of the era a punch of pizazz. Because there’s a ’40s lover in every woman, I decided to model 5 ’40s dresses, representative of the era’s trends from Hinesite Vintage to show you how these

nearly 70-year-old dresses can be worn for 2012! I was hesitant to model these ’40s dresses because I’ve never declared myself a ’40s or ’50s fashion kind of girl. Since I’m more of a ‘70s clothing kind of gal, I was worried the era just wouldn’t look good on me! What I learned after modeling these dresses is that I do enjoy wearing styles of the ’40s! Like life itself, it’s actually empowering to experiment with our fashion choices sometimes. I’m glad I kept an open mind and heart to stay inspired and share these styles with you! So we want to know: Do you own a ’40s dress? Which of these dresses do you want in your cwardrobe right now?
Take a look at Sammy’s blog to peruse the 5 styles she believes best represent the ’40s, and to see which one best fits your vintage-inspired life!

Everything Oz by Hannah Read-Baldrey and Christine Leech The second book from the duo that brought us ‘Everything Alice’, ‘Everything Oz’ takes the reader on a magical journey along the yellow brick road. Written by L Frank Baum in 1900 and released as what would become ‘the most famous film of all time’ in 1939, the Wizard of Oz boasts a world of iconic vintage imagery; all of which comes out to play in this amazing craft book. There is something in this book for everyone. The cook, the crafter, the expert and the novice…...even a certain pair of ruby slippers. The book is scattered with Hannah read-Baldrey’s charming illustations and excerpts from the original book aswell as innovative craft projects and recipes to delight friends, family and pets! Although ‘Everything Oz’ gives you all the tools you need to create the ultimate themed party, many of the projects can be used for other things. The Great Wizards Throne Tent would for example make quite an addition to any boudoir or would turn an outdoor are incredibly wearable, especially the beautiful Poppy T-Shirt, great for using up small pieces of fabric. - Reviewed by Vintagefolly.com seating area into a luxurious hideaway.
