ED’S MESSAGE

Hello...

Well what a Summer it’s been!! Some of us are bronzed after weeks and weeks of sunshine and some have had so much rain they are at risk of trench foot!! I am one of the soggy ones. But hasn’t it been an exciting Summer!? Particularly for the British, this Summer has been celebration after celebration; first the Jubilee, then the Olympics and the Paralympics has just begun. So it’s time to welcome in a new season and it’s is the season of leaves crunching underfoot, of shorter days and bountiful harvests. This is the season of Halloween, fireworks and Thanksgiving.

There’s an awful lot to look forward to and of course we’ll be enjoying the festivities with a little vintage flair! In this issue, we speak to Cherry Dollface, the beautiful pin up model who’s Youtube Channel has become and internet sensation and we go back to the 30s to discover how to make some rather naughty prohibition era cocktails. Spotlight on Audrey Hepburn BORN IN BELGIUM IN 1929, THE DAUGHTER OF A DUTCH ARISTOCRAT, AUDREY HEPBURN SPENT MUCH OF HER EARLY LIFE TRAVELLING EUROPE WITH HER PARENTS. With her multinational background, she went on to speak fluent English, Dutch, French, Spanish and Italian. After her parents separated in 1935, Hepburn and her mother moved to Kent but returned to Holland just before the outbreak of World War Twoar and lived there during German occupation. She would later talk of seeing Jewish families, taken away by the Nazis. Hepburn secretly raised money for the Dutch resistance by performing for money, a proficient Ballerina, she would later dance in the West End. Her experiences of the humanitarian crisis that struck the Dutch people during this

time, inspired her devotion to UNICEF. After the war, Audrey and her mother Ella, moved to Amsterdam where she continued to study ballet and then later to London where she pursued employment that could support them both. Whilst performing as a chorus girl, she was spotted by a casting director and played a number of minor roles. She eventually landed the lead role in the Broadway play Gigi to great acclaim and after over 200 performances, began a more serious film career. Her big break into the movie industry was her portrayal of Princess Ann in The Roman Holiday for which she received a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. Critics would describe her as â&#x20AC;&#x2DC; a slender, elfin and wistful beauty, alternately regal and childlikeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Following her success in Roman Holiday, she starred in romantic Cinderella-story story Sabrini in which wealthy brothers, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden compete for her affections.

SPOTLIGHT ON AUDREY HEPBURN her final days with loved ones in Switzerland after being flown back to her home town in Hubert de Givenchy’s private jet. Her funeral was attended by royalty of the stage and screen; who joined Hepburn’s family, friends, fashion designers, humanitarian colleagues and actual Royalty! She was laid to rest in Tolochenaz, Switzerland.

In 1954 Audrey married Mel Ferrer, an actor she had met whilst playing Ondine, a water spirit in the theatre production of the same name. They had a son, Sean in 1960. Having become one of Hollywood’s most popular box-office attractions, she went on to star in a series of successful films, but her most famous, was the role of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Hepburn’s legacy is in many ways unmatched. Her life, style and personality have had such influence on movies, fashion and the work of UNICEF. Her unmistakable ‘look’ continues to inspire fashionistas the World over and her beautifully delicate performances still have the ability to move modern audiences. Audrey Hepburn was as beautiful inside as she was outwardly and much can be learned from her. Her legend lives on beyond our lifetime and will more than likely live on far beyond ours!

Loosely based on the novel by Truman Capote, Capote actually envisaged Marilyn Monroe as the lead actress. Nevertheless, the film was and continues to be incredibly popular and the style of the character became synonymous with Hepburn herself. Indeed, the Givency dress she wears in the opening scenes is considered by many to be the most iconic piece of clothing in the history of the 20th century and potentially the most famous little black dress of all time! Hepburn went on to make a number of other films including My Fair Lady in which she was cast as Eliza Doolittle instead of Julie Andrews. The media tried to imply a rivalry between the two actresses, but despite the rumours, the two got on very well. In 1967, Hepburn took a break from her highly successful carreer to concentrate on her family life with husband Mel and their only son Sean. Ferrer and Hepburn would divorce the next year. After meeting whilst visiting Greek ruins in 1969, Audrey married physicist Andrea Dotti and the following year she gave birth to their son Luca. Hepburn attempted a movie comeback in the 70s and 80s with roles alongside Sean Connery and Robert Wagner, but most of her energies were spent on her charitable work and with her two children. Though she is of course best known for her film roles, Audrey Hepburn was a committed humanitarian. Whilst working for UNICEF, she said ‘The ‘Third World’ is a term I don’t like very much, because we’re all one world. I want people to know that the largest part of humanity is suffering.” In the early 1980s, Hepburn divorced Lotti and began a relationship with Robert Wolders. She and Robert would remain together until Audrey died of abdominal cancer in 1992. She would call their time together the happiest of her life. She spent

“WE ARE A VINTAGE COMPANY SO NOW OFFER THE MOBILE SERVICE MADE POPULAR IN THE 1940’S AND 50’S” No month is the same at Lipstick & Curls; we work on photo shoots, hen parties, events, weddings, and festivals and also in people homes with our take away service. Summer is our busiest time for weddings and December for parties and events, but we usually have a bit of everything each month that keeps the job varied. It is a very sociable job and we get to meet all sorts of people who are interested in vintage to varying degrees. We love to be creative; we are constantly researching different styles and recreating them on our customers. We all love vintage, watch old films and plough through loads of vintage magazines looking for amazing hair & make up. Much to my partners frustration I often stop a film half way though so I can get a copy of a hairstyle I’ve seen.

I GUESS THE BEST THING ABOUT RUNNING LIPSTICK & CURLS IS THE VINTAGE WEEKENDERS AND EVENTS. While we work at a lot of the vintage festivals, we usually finish at a certain time and get to see the bands and join in the fun. It’s always nice to see some of your creations out and about in the evening.

THE LIPSTICK & CURLS TAKEAWAY We are a vintage company so now offer the mobile service made popular in the 1940’s and 50’s. While most of us arrive on public transport rather than the Triumph Mayflower that we’d like, it does give the company a connection with the hair & make up artists of the past.

SHOREDITCH VINTAGE FAIR We have several pop up parlours at different events, but the one we have been working with the longest is the Shoreditch Vintage fair, I usually spend most my earnings there on clothes though!

PIN UP PHOTO BOOTH Another collaboration with Tony Nylons is the Pin Up Photo booth. Our monthly session of customers having the hair & make up styled by Lipstick & Curls and then photographed by Tony. Again we have a wide range of people attending. We do vintage portraits, group shots and pin-ups. Sometimes they are publicity shots, other times just privates shot for the clients or their partners.

HEN PARTY Hen parties are always good fun. They are usually large groups of girls wanting a vintage hair and makeover as part of their celebrations. There’s a party style atmosphere and each one is different. While we like the ‘bride to be’ to take centre stage, we make up everyone in the vintage style they wish, although they are usually decade based as there is normally a club evening ahead.

DAY OF THE DEAD SHOOT

STUMLIN SLIMS We have a regular parlour at several evening events. One of them is the monthly club Stumlin Slim and I often get to see bands like the Caezars, Little Barrie and Jack Rabbit Slim while I work.

I come from a high fashion background and like to work on more unusual shoots. This was one I put together with Photographer Nick Mann. I love Mexico and the iconography of day of the dead and see it having a huge influence on vintage style. We wanted to do a macabre shoot that used light to set the mood and it allowed me to work on a hair & make up look that perhaps wouldn’t work on the street.

This month we were working on the New Miss L Fire campaign. A shoe company I love whose theme for this season was 1920â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carnival. The model was the beautifully tattooed Sammi Sadler who was perfect for the role. These types of shoots I enjoy as they allow you to be more creative and recreate some stronger looks.

WEDDINGS

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s summer time and weddings are a large part of our work at weekends, although increasingly on weekdays as well. For all brides her wedding day is perhaps one of the most important days of her life and we want it to be perfect. We usually have a consultation before hand to work out what the bride wants and then work out how it will look on the day. Every bride is different sometimes the bride is calm and her household relaxed other times nervous and frantic. They are magical though, with beautiful dresses and brides so excited about their special day.

Combine flour, 1 cup sugar and baking powder in large bowl. Mix 1 cup cereal and milk in medium bowl; let stand 3 minutes. Add egg, orange peel, orange juice and 2 tablespoons oil; mix well. Add to flour mixture; stir just until moistened. (Batter will be lumpy.) Gently stir in cranberries. Crush remaining 1 cup cereal; mix with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 tsp. oil. Spoon batter evenly into 16 paper-lined medium muffin cups. Top with cereal mixture. Bake 22 minutes or until muffins are golden brown and wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 5 minutes; remove to wire rack. Serve warm or cooled. HOW TO COOK CHILLI

Larry Walton’s 2011 Terlingua International Chili Champion Recipe Courtesy of the Chili Appreciation Society International, Inc. (CASI). CASI’s mission is to educate about the historic and cultural significance of chili, and it raises over $1 million for local charities through sponsored cook-offs every year. Portions: 2 pounds, or 8 servings

INGREDIENTS

1st Mixture: 1 Tbl onion granules - 1 Tbl garlic granules - 1 Tbl beef granules - 1 Tbl chicken granules - 2 Tbls Mexene chili powder - 1/8 teaspoon salt - 2 dashes Louisiana hot sauce 2nd Mixture: 1 teaspoon garlic granules - 1 Tbl cumin - 1 package Sazon Goya - 2 Tbls Mexene chili powder - 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper - 2 dashes Louisiana hot sauce Additional Ingredients: 2 pounds ground beef - 1 14.5-ounce can beef broth - 1/2 14.5-ounce can chicken broth - 1 1/2 8-ounce cans tomato sauce - 1/8 teaspoon brown sugar, if needed salt to taste.

METHOD

Mix 1st and 2nd mixtures in separate bowls then set aside. Brown ground beef then drain off grease. Add beef broth, chicken broth and tomato sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a slow simmer for 40 minutes. Add 1st mixture and simmer for 40 minutes. Add 2nd mixture and cook on low heat for 25 minutes. If too spicy, add brown sugar and salt to taste.

If you want to fine-tune your chili cooking chops, take a few hints from Larry Walton, the 2011 Terlingua International Chili Champion. Here are his top five tips for making great chili: n

Chili Powder — Using the right chili powder makes all the difference in the world. Mexene Chili Powder and Seasoning Mix is a good choice because it’s well rounded and balanced.

Meat — Choose premium quality ground beef with an 80/20 percent beef to fat ratio. Or for an interesting twist, choose fresh boneless, skinless chicken thighs such as Tyson’s all natural products, which are especially tender and juicy. (Find chili recipes at www.tyson.com.)

Browning — A key essential is to brown your meat. It not only adds richness to your dish but also helps with the dark color of the chili.

Spices — The spices are a main ingredient to bring out all the flavors. It’s best to use spice powders, since they’re more pungent.

Secret Ingredient — Last but not least, add your secret “booster” such as chili powder, paprika, cocoa or a few dashes of Louisiana Hot Sauce at the end of cooking to wow your tasters.

2 cups water

Portions: 4 servings 6 Tyson Fresh Boneless Skinless chicken thighs (cooked and cut into bite-sized pieces) 2 16-ounce cans kidney beans, not drained 2 14.5-ounce cans diced tomatoes, not drained 1 1.6-ounce package Mexene Chili Seasoning Mix 1 Tbl garlic pepper sauce, to taste

At this point you can run it through a chopper if a finer dice is desired.

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan. Stir until well blended. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. Serve with shredded cheese and tortilla chips or crackers.

Add all other spices; mix well. Add water and simmer for one hour. Can be made ahead of time and frozen in a nonmetallic container or freezer bag.

Easy Chicken Chili Portions: 4 servings 6 Tyson Fresh Boneless Skinless chicken thighs (cooked and cut into bite-sized pieces) 2 16-ounce cans kidney beans, not drained 2 14.5-ounce cans diced tomatoes, not drained 1 1.6-ounce package Mexene Chili Seasoning Mix 1 Tbl garlic pepper sauce, to taste Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan.

Cut chicken into 1/2-inch cubes. Spray large, deep pot or saucepan with nonstick cooking spray. Heat over medium-high. Add chicken; cook 2 minutes, stir足ring frequently. Add onion, peppers and garlic. Cook 5 minutes longer, stirring occa足 sionally. Add remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 20 to 30 minutes or until chicken is done (internal temperature of 170属F).

Stir until well blended. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes. Serve with shredded cheese and tortilla chips or crackers.

Portions: 6 servings 1 pound ground beef 1 medium onion, diced 3 Tbls Mexene chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon oregano 1/4 teaspoon cumin 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Black and White Chicken Chili Portions: 10 servings 6 Tyson Fresh Boneless Skinless chicken thighs 1 large onion, chopped 2 jalape単o peppers, fresh; seeded

SERVING SUGGESTION:

Top individual servings of chili with sour cream. Serve with mixed green salad and hot tortillas or tortilla chips. Refrigerate leftovers or freeze in a tightly sealed nonmetallic container or freezer bag.

We have noticed a distinctly ‘vintage’ vibe to many of your products. Where does the inspiration for designs come from?

So if I was trapped on a desert island I’d want to be wearing something like the stunning vintage-inspired Nancie set. I adore the peach satin and lace balconette bra and pin-up style high-waisted briefs with cushioned satin straps and a pretty cameo charm to the centre of the bra, who needs life’s other little luxuries when you have this on?

Inspiration for our beautiful lingerie comes from all eras and decades - but always with a luxurious, modern twist. From the roaring twenties’ flapper girls to the classic 1950’s pin up, we adore all things feminine and beautiful.

If you could see any vintage icon wearing Boux Avenue, who would it be? I’d create a beautiful hybrid of all the greats - she would have Marilyn’s famous curves, Audrey’s sense of style, Sophia Loren’s sex appeal and Grace Kelly’s natural beauty.

You have just got back from the Warped Tour, how did was it?

It was crazy! Two months on the road with all of my friends. It was hot and rainy and fun and nuts.

You are fast becoming an iconic model in the pin-up, tattoo, alternative and vintage scene. How did you get involved in modeling?

By accident actually. I was at a car show and a photographer snapped a photo of me and it ended up on the cover of a hot rod magazine. From there it just kind of took off. It wasn’t ever something I really thought about doing until it happened.

You have some beautiful tattoos, do they have meanings and which one is the most poignant? I have a few super meaningful ones. I have my brother and sisters names and also a

Thanks! He took me to the Hollywood sign the day I left for tour and got down on one knee and did the whole romantic schpeal. I cried like a baby. It was really sweet.

…and have you started thinking about the big day?

Oh gosh I haven’t even had time with this crazy summer! I know I want something small and really elegant. I want all class and loveliness shared with my most beloved people.

You Youtube channel is incredibly popular. What made you start making videos?

3A director friend suggested I do it so I just started playin around and they blew up. It is one of the most fun

I take a lot of suggestions from viewers and I get inspired from everything I see. Movies, tv, photo shoots, pinterest... Our world is an amazing place for creative exploration.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?

My Mom always told me to be strong and be myself and I think I have done and it has worked for me so far. Another piece of advice I was given recently is that you should go in the direction of your dreams and the Universe will eventually catch you up!

Our Readers Pin Ups Every issue we get a lot of pin-up images from our readers, photographers and models. But what exactly does it mean to become a pin-Up and where did it come from? Pin-up models or pin-up girls were originally celebrities who were considered sex symbols or their time and the images produced were ‘Pinned’ to walls, boards and most notibly lockers of G.I.s during World War II.

The term ‘Pin-Up’ now has a lot of different meanings and it’s something that we like to encourage. Whether you go with the Gil Elvgren look edging on flirty, vibrant images, or the more burlesque darker images with the likes of suicide girl images.

A massive thanks to SlugsontheRefrigerator.com for this article. There isn’t a lot of articles out there to try and bring a bit of Crochet into our gentlemans life. If anyone has attempted this masterclass and suceeded! Let us know and we’ll pass on the great news.

One of the challenges in building a cohesive collection of crochetwear designs is creating patterns that would work for everyone. By its nature, crochet creates an open, lacy fabric that is perceived as more feminine. Be it writing a book of crochet designs, simply not liking lacy items or making something for a boy or bloke in your life, it can be tricky to find something that fits the masculine/unisex button. There are ways to work with crochet to give it a more unisex feel ranging from stitches to the wool choice to the design... Stitches: - Cabled crochet Using crossed Front or Back Post (UK= raised, front and back) creates cables. It can be tricky to get your head around at first, but once a basic cable pattern is established, its an easy way to add a bit of detail to a project and really gives a project a chunky, rugged feel. - Ribbing: Using either slip stitch or single (UK= double) crochet through the back loop only, makes lovely ribbing. Slip stitch ribbing strongly resembles knit fabric, while single crochet ribbing reminds me of garter stitch. - Tweed/Granite/Seed stitch I have seen this stitch refered to in many ways, but its basic pattern is *1sc, 1ch, skip the next stitch* repeat from * and then on the next row *sc into the ch-sp,

1ch* repeat from *. If I had a favourite crochet stitch, this would probably be it. It creates a fabric with a lovely drape and the stitch pattern is really magnificent in garments.

- Basketweave Another new favourite. I love the strong fabric it creates...though it is slight pain to design with, as its 8 stitch/8 row repeat it is a tad inflexible. - If you crochet, You know that a crochet stitch is connected at the top and the bottom to the other stitches, with the body of the stitch open (unlike knitting that connects each stitch through the stitch below). Crochet stitches that minimise the open section will reduce the laciness of the fabric. For solid work, I find that either basic sc, or a solid half double (UK=half treble) are best. Solid Half Double is worked into the space between the 2 stitches of the previous round/row, rather than into the top of the stitch. Yarn choices play another role in making items that are more unisex, of course. Tweedy wools, those more on the matt side (without too much sheen), colour choices all play a role. I also have found that thinner wools - (DK and under) and thicker wools (chunky/bulky) are better for more masculine items. With thinner yarn, the gaps that exist in crochet fabric are less evident, therefore removing much of the lacy-ness, whereas at the other end of the spectrum, chunkier yarns give the stitches a bit more heft, making the stitches pop. And while I can’t share any of my designs, I

The Great British Bake Off

WHAT THEY SAY:

Inspired by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood’s challenges, SHOWSTOPPERS shows you how to create bakes that will both turn heads and make mouths water. To transform really good recipes into eye catching bakes, you don’t need professional levels of skill, nor hours of time. Just a host of brilliant recipes together with ingeniously simple styling secrets and decorating tips.

WHAT WE SAY: This is a very substantial hard-back book with, as you would expect from The Great British Bake Off, luxurious recipes and gorgeous photography. The recipes are separated into sections; biscuits, cakes, breads etc and then within each section the recipes are rated by the level of skill required. The recipes I have tried have been very easy to follow and the results easy to reproduce with the help of the beautiful images, but here lies the problem, there just aren’t enough of said images. Some of these recipes, which include technical challenges and signature bakes from the show, are quite complicated and yet

almost half are not accompanied by a photograph of the final result.

In all honesty I think you are not only less likely to try a recipe without a picture to whet your appetite, but you are also less likely to create it successfully without an image to refer to.

IT IS A SHAME, BECAUSE APART FROM THIS, I CAN FIND NO FAULT WHATSOEVER WITH THE BOOK WHICH ACCOMPANIES THE NEW SERIES OF THE GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF. BUY IT FOR RELIABLE EVERYDAY RECIPES AND IDEAS THAT WILL ADD A FLAIR TO EVERYTHING YOU BAKE. ISSUE 3 - MODERN VINTAGE MAGAZINE
