OFFICE DESIGN The project is to design a mixed-use building that will house their west coast headquarters, as well as a retail space for visitors, a public exhibition space for art, photography, educational exhibition, and a cafe. The existing building is located in an open area of the Presidio district of San Francisco. It is located near the intersection of Anza Avenue and Owen Street. Similar to other buildings in the Presidio District, the historic architectural style of the building is Mission Revival.

HISTORY The Presidio National Park is located at Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. It has a rich historical background throwing back to the times of Native Ohlone people, which were present at the site of Presidio about 740 A.D. In 1776, when Spanish military and civilian arrived in the

CONCEPT ACCUMULATION OF TIME Our history, culture, technolog y and a lot of other knowledge are created by accumulating information throughout time. This can relate to a lot of elements in the project site and National Geographic: since Presidio area and this project building has rich historic background with Spanish, Mexican, and American influences, we can see the site accumulating each countries’ characteristics of each. Similarly, National Geographic been publishing their magazine by accumulating new information with their past research. This concept can be seen in design as a layers natural and artificial materials, overlapping floor plans to demonstrate the “accumulation”. Spirals, circles, infinity shapes represent time.

COMMERCIAL DESIGN The project is a high-end organic store located on the first floor of Channel Mission Bay Apartment in Mission Bay, San Francisco CA. The main goal of this store is to connect local residences in Mission Bay including low-income residences, by producing monthly community service opportunities in the store. The client, Tony Riviera, is the founder, president & CEO of Primo Hospitality Group. For this project, he wants to open a new market with the restaurant in Mission Bay. His vision for the space is an upscale market with specialized high quality sustainable organic products.

SITE ANALYSIS HISTORY Mission Bay is one of the extended reclaimed lands in San Francisco, California. It used to be a natural habitat area, where Native American lived. As time passed, from the 1850s to late 1870s, the area became the place for shipbuilding and repair. At the same time, people grew this area little by little. The situation changed after the 1906 San Francisco DEMOGRAPHICS

CONCEPT FIBONACCI SEQUENCE OF DRAGONFLY The overall design concept is inspired by the perfect proportion, as seen in nature – known as the Fibonacci sequence. The design is specifically inspired by the dragonfly, in which one can see the Fibonacci sequence and symbolism of transformation. This will represent the client’s vision for “Market Hall Mission Bay” an organic, healthy, and timeless space. It’s also connected to the project site, because this area is now “transforming” into the high-end area in San Francisco. It will also appeal to Tony’s target market because it represents the beauty found in nature and transformation, both enticing ideas to the local, young , hipster people. The elements of the concept will appear as an organized space plan, connected lines, repeating geometric shapes, transparent/translucent/gradient materials and neutral colors with some accents. Ultimately, I hope to create a space that is both inspired by nature, as well as guided by it.

SITE ANALYSIS HISTORY The Richmond District has a very colorful history. Beerhouses, race tracks, athletic venues, amusement parks, boarding houses – the Richmond has seen many phases in its time and while many of the landmarks from its early years are no longer around, it’s a wonderful place to live, stroll and shop. In the 1800s, what is now the Richmond District was known as the “Outside Lands” because it was “outside” the original city boundaries when California became a state in 1850. Originally this area of the city was owned by Mexico, then annexed by the U.S.

CONCEPT COMPACT CITY Since space is dedicated to elderly and people with dementia, most likely they will spend most of their time there which may cause a sense of stagnation. It is important to create space that people can feel open and connected to society. To achieve this goal, the designer came up with “Compact City” as a concept. “Compact City” is urban planning and urban design concept, which promotes relatively high residential density with mixed land uses. The basic elements of urban planning for a city incorporates design that is attractive, integrated, connected, functional, safe, lively, vibrant and sustainable. This concept of “Compact City” is the project’s goal and it is also representing the project location, San Francisco. This is because San Francisco is the one of the compact city in the United States. In this project, the designer incorporated a unique element of San Francisco with the element of “Compact City.” The design element will appear in grid-like circulation, which is mimicking the map of San Francisco; center located indoor garden, which represents parks like Golden Gate Park or Dolores Park; curved furniture and walls, inspired by Lombard Street and rounded bay-windows, which can be seen in the Victorian houses, and more.
