editor’s note /STYLE POINTS W

hat’s your style? The older I get, the less I know how to respond to this question. The honest answer is that it’s complicated, it’s evolving; more of a feeling than a simple answer like, “Traditional” or “Modern.” One of my favorite things about working as an editor is getting to see inspiring projects and fabulous products on a daily basis, but this (and the endless Instagram scrolling) often adds to the confusion. Am I really someone who can live with open shelving in a kitchen? Probably, no. Is a minimalist approach appealing to me right now because I share my house with a husband, three young kids and a dog? Probably, yes.

SCAN TO EXPLORE

What I do know, is great style when I see it, and there is plenty of it packed into all three of this issue’s features. A peek into textile designer Rosemary Hallgarten’s primary suite and closet reveals a masterclass in layering texture to create depth and warmth from a strict neutral palette. Even the studded Chloé boots at the foot of her bed coordinated with the creamy white alpaca bouclé; a little bit comfy, a little bit rock ‘n’ roll (page 36). For Mar Jennings, it was all about adding personal touches to transform his Westport home according to his needs (page 42). A garage became an enviable garden studio space while custom built-ins in the bedroom were added to display and store an expansive wardrobe. (Pro tip: Always keep the orange Hermès boxes.) In Michelle Morgan Harrison’s project, the designer had to get creative addressing the needs of a busy family who needed more space for family living than formal dining (page 58). But once those design dilemmas were solved, she got creative in other ways: splashing color onto walls, papering rooms with bold prints and adding fun fixtures. Finally, after last year’s virtual event, we’re more excited than ever to see you in person at the A-List Awards on September 14. We’re moving the party to The Village, a waterfront destination in Stamford’s South End, and hope to see you there. Purchase tickets today at athomealistawards.com. You’ll have a chance to network with our talented design community and celebrate the work of our finalists in this year’s A-List Program (page 76). For those of us who’ve not met, it would be a great place for us to connect. I promise I won’t ask you about your style!

hances are, if you’re a fan of their outerwear, you’ll really love their homeware. VERONICA BEARD, the fashion brand known for its iconic dickey jacket, is expanding into the home space with a tabletop capsule collection. Called Boho Vine, the colors and geometric floral prints on placemats, napkins, tablecloths and beach blankets are inspired by the easy, breezy mood of late-summer gatherings. Co-designers and sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard saw the opportunity as a natural evolution for the brand, as both women love to entertain and set their tables for family and friends. “Your home is an extension of who you are,” says athomefc.com

hen crafting their latest collection, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams focused on how we live now. Spending so much time in our own homes has forced us to re-evaluate the ways in which our furniture and floorplans function. And while the designers behind the brand realize that comfort is key, they did not sacrifice style when dreaming up their latest pieces. What co-founder and president of design Bob Williams refers to as “New Modern” is “architectural, yet also warm and welcoming, and beautifully crafted.” Sculptural sofas add sophistication while inviting modular sectionals offer versatility. fter a decade of hosting families, Ronald McDonald House of Greater Hudson Valley was due for a redesign. Assigned with the playroom, Denise Davies and Karri Bowen Poole of Smart D2 Playrooms were approached to reinvent an escape where kids could focus on fun. It’s what the pair do best—executing rooms that balance imaginative play and interior design—since they joined forces in 2019. While both women continue to maintain their separate businesses (Davies with D2 Interiuers, Poole with Smart Playrooms), this joint venture has allowed them to bring their colorful vision to high-end commercial and communal playrooms. A rainbow-splashed mural by Allyson Monson Photography features inspirational words and butterflies, a call back to the images that were painted on the original walls. With a clementine façade and teal trim, an oversize playhouse pops, while a neon sign that reads, “Happy Place” adds

ith an emphasis on innovation and expansion postCovid, ARTISTIC TILE recently launched a new collection of colorful patterns called “Made in America,” all domestically made in Artistic Tile’s energyefficient headquarters in Secaucus. To fulfill the demands of customers requesting colorful ways to reimagine their patterns, the designs can be completely customized in-house by the company’s team of skilled mosaic and waterjet artisans as part of Artistic Tile’s “Tailored To” program. Their in-house capabilities enable them to highly customize elements such as color, finishing, layout and more. “When we created these custom concepts, we weren’t interested in doing the expected or what might usually be stocked—no blends of white or white stone,” says Zach Epstein, chief product officer. “We wanted to introduce mosaics that are more colorful, more eye-catching, extraordinary, different and unique!” artistictile.com

Early into their partnership, the women created the Flower Power Fund, setting a goal of giving back to the community by donating playrooms with the help of donations and volunteers. Projects like the one presented by Ronald McDonald House were exactly what they had in mind. The women celebrated with the Ronald McDonald House team at the ribbon-cutting ceremony in celebration of their ten-year anniversary. Poole was able to reflect on it being “so rewarding and such a great feeling because we were coming off of Covid, with people getting sick and losing jobs and so much sadness around the world. I love Benjamin Moore’s Stained Glass, a deep, bluey-green hue. I’m working on a library/ bar with a lot of brass, antique mirrors and rich velvets, and this color grounds the space and sets the mood!

Brilliant Blue by Benjamin Moore is pure fun for kids’ spaces. I love this pop of blue for a room, especially when applied on a ceiling. The color energizes you the moment you walk into the space. You don’t need to paint every wall in the entire room in this color; in fact, I love to use the ceiling as the fifth wall, and the result is so impactful.

I’m not a huge fan of “bold colors,” but I’ve always had an affinity for orange—I love anything that comes in an orange box—and it goes well with so many other colors. Even though orange seems a bit intimidating due to its bright hues, I would love to paint a panelled study in Farrow & Ball’s Charlotte’s Locks in a lacquer finish.

WILD CARD I recently painted a family room in Benjamin Moore’s Palmer Green. It’s rich and moody yet vibrant at the same time. I love how it really pops against a creamy white trim. I paired it with sunny yellow and cornflower blue furnishings, and it may just be my favorite color combo yet!

GO-TO HUE

GO-TO HUE

GO-TO HUE

GO-TO HUE

Even though the name has “pistachio” in it, Palest Pistachio by Benjamin Moore typically reads more white with a hint of pale blue. I use this often on ceilings and trim when just a touch of color is needed.

Paint can pack a powerful punch and become the focal point, or it can be subtle and act as a soothing backdrop to your room. My go-to calming hue is Ammonite by Farrow & Ball. When I use it on walls, I typically select the flat finish and use the same color for the trim in a Satin Impervo finish. It makes a subtle yet very sophisticated and modern statement.

I am a huge fan of neutrals, especially grays, and Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore never seems to disappoint. I just used a high gloss finish of this color on a client’s kitchen cabinets with brass hardware, and it is just divine! Whether you’re painting kitchen cabinets—I always tend to use a high gloss or lacquer finish—or just painting your walls in a flat finish throughout your home, it’s the perfect soothing backdrop for whatever your design scheme may be.

Benjamin Moore’s Tissue Pink is the perfect alternative to the white wall. This isn’t your average children’s room pink—it’s a beautiful, mature shade of pink and makes an understated impact.

We are huge fans of adding pops of bright yellow to bring a touch of happy and whimsy to a home. I’m currently crushing on marigold tones like the aptly named Yellow Marigold by Benjamin Moore. It’s smile-inducing—what’s better than that?!

If a client is open to it, I always love the opportunity to bring a dramatic, deeply pigmented hue into a home. Black Raspberry by Benjamin Moore is a personal favorite. Even with purple undertones, it has a masculine and modern edge. This color is more versatile than one would expect, pairing beautifully with grays and blush tones.

The time has finally arrived—Benjamin Moore’s Water’s Edge is making its debut in my design! We’re finishing a large built-in in this color in a lacquer finish. The shade is bold and strong, yet so organic and soothing. It will be fabulous.

GO-TO HUE

GO-TO HUE

River Blue by Benjamin Moore is my go-to for built-ins, cabinetry and dining rooms. This deep teal exudes a vibrant sophistication that feels rich in a matte finish, yet playful in high gloss. It pairs beautifully with warm browns and taupes as well as brighter colors!

My go-to hue for design projects, especially new construction with architectural details, is Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. This moody gray is a sophisticated and modern alternative to traditional black and looks fabulous on front doors in a high gloss finish. I also love to use it as a chic highlight on cabinetry and handrails.

My favorite color to use is Farrow & Ball’s Purbeck Stone—it’s a chameleon. When working with a neutral palette, you can see this color change based on the fabrics you use within the room; Purbeck Stone literally melts into the space. This is my go-to and has never failed me.

WILD CARD Benjamin Moore’s Cheerful is a bright color that injects a feeling of exuberance and warmth. It mimics gorgeous garden flowers—tulips, forsythia, yellow roses— and marries well with other colors found in nature. I would use Cheerful on built-ins, accent walls and ceilings in spaces where you want an uplifting, feelgood vibe.

GO-TO HUE My go-to hue is Benjamin Moore’s Silver Satin. It’s clean and neutral and complements any decor. It sits softly in the background, offering a Zen-like feel. I use it everywhere—walls, ceilings and built-ins.

After the year we have had, I’ve been gravitating towards Benjamin Moore’s Burnt Sienna in my wardrobe for months to warm things up. Now I can’t wait to use it in a room. I would pair it with gray tones and possibly pops of navy to cut the warmth.

WILD CARD

I am excited to use Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green in my upcoming project! I love color but feel like blue is very over-used, and green is very underutilized. This one is rich—almost a jewel tone—not a hunter or grass green. I have clients who love taking risks and making a statement. We will be using a high gloss finish on their butler’s pantry.

Benjamin Moore Delft is a deep navy blue that I recently used in my friend’s dining room. I love clear, saturated blues like this; pure pigment that gives you that intense hit of color. This color feels good and is flattering to your guests during the day and in the evening.

I am totally obsessed with coral this year! I love the pop it gives and it coordinates with many colors. One of my favorites is Benjamin Moore Fan Coral. I’m using it on reverse painted glass panels on a kitchen island that I recently designed. It blends beautifully with the rift and quarter-sawn white oak cabinetry.

GO-TO HUE

GO-TO HUE

My go-to color is Benjamin Moore Vanilla Milkshake. I love this color when painting an entire room white. Finding a white can be tricky; some are too cold and sterile, some become cream or too chromatic when they get warm. This white is clean and crisp but warm.

Wickham Gray by Benjamin Moore is one of my forever go-to colors. I call it a “chameleon color,” as it will take on whatever you pair it with. I often use it as a starting point in bedrooms, since it’s so calming and versatile.

Farrow & Ball’s All White is the whitest white but still with a nice warmth that doesn’t feel cold or sterile. I have this color in my office and have done it in clients’ living rooms. I love it for a clean but soothing white that feels pure and calm.

My go-to hue is Benjamin Moore Nimbus Gray. It is a cool mid-tone blue-gray and has a dense reflective quality. I love to use this in a high gloss on custom cabinetry for a bar or pantry. I have also used it on custom pieces of painted furniture with inserts of both brass and nickel.

SUITE ESCAPE ROSEMARY HALLGARTEN layers tone and texture to create her very own ZEN ZONE interview with rosemary hall garten | phot o gr apher amy vischio | st ylist holli kingsbury

How does your work as a textile designer inform your interior design style? For me, it’s about the old

and the new, about making history feel contemporary. I love to harness the textile traditions of ancient communities, the weavers and rug makers in Peru, Brazil and Nepal, and make them feel modern in terms of design and texture. One of the things people say about my textiles is they feel good. They are comfortable and cozy. You want to touch them, to sit on them. When I’m talking to clients about my rugs, if it’s summertime, I tell them to take their sandals off and step on them. How would you characterize your interior design style overall? I like modern but layered with history.

I like to mix old with new in everything I do. I gravitate toward monotones with lots of textures. I like simple, calm and luxurious, but inviting and comfortable. opposite page: The master suite’s soothing palette of whites and creams adds to its spa-like vibe. The feathered Roman shade is an ombré alpaca linen in Oat, the curtains are a micro bouclé in Powder, and the Oanh Setee by Bright Group is covered in a plush Suri alpaca called Gatsby. The three-legged table is from Terrain.

How does your master suite reflect that? Unlike the downstairs, which is filled with things I’ve collected

over the years and inherited from my mother, the master is the Zen space, a place of real calm. I wanted a bedroom with a bath. That was the starting point. I wanted this area to be an oasis and have a sense of calm, almost the feeling of a spa, and having a bath in the bedroom contributes to that feeling. The bed is modern and low. The ombré window treatments are subtle and elegant. The Victorian letter drawer, which I inherited from my aunt, is very old. The ombré alpaca rug next to it is new—it’s part of my Ley Lines collection. My closet space was built by the Amish in Ohio. So, there’s that traditional element; the hanging part is set up like a retail clothing store, which has a modern feel. > athomefc.com

The shark photo is by Chris Leidy; wooden totem is by California artist Rich Chapman. opposite: Victoria & Albert’s Barcelona tub was the inspiration for the room.

I’ve read that you are an advocate of sustainability. How does this play out in your design? Sustainability means two things: the sustainability of

the product and also sustaining communities and giving them livelihoods; it’s about giving work to people rather than just machines. Sustainability and a social consciousness; these values are important to me and to my whole team. They are part of our mission, and everyone who works for me values them as I do. How difficult is it to do a room in a monochromatic palette? The master

suite is a good example of how I use textures to add interest. I think if you have textures to play with, then it’s easy. Every rug designer wants their client to start with a rug. As it happened, I didn’t do that in this room. My starting point was the tub, because I had dark floors, and I wanted something very calm and monochromatic and light. You have to have textural contrast, and then it’s fun to throw in something hot—whether it’s a kind of more masculine gray like the throw on the bed or something more feminine. athomefc.com

That shark makes a bold statement. How did you come up with him?

Please tell us about your use of texture in this space. All the products

Oh gosh, the shark. It’s funny. I don’t usually like sharks. But I met the photographer, Chris Leidy, at a show at Arc Fine Art in Fairfield and fell in love with the piece. To me, there’s something very soothing about it.

are from my collection. A lot of it is made of alpaca—the rugs, the throws, the drapery. Alpacas are a good sustainable yarn, and alpacas themselves prevent erosion, which is part of my whole story about why I love alpaca. Everything is made by hand. I go to Peru twice a year and know the artisans and their families. Everything has a lot of depth in that way. The ombré Roman blind in the bedroom is a good example of how texture can add interest. I wanted to do something dramatic with it and highlight the height of the ceiling, so I created this very long Roman shade and played with the fabric, which has a kind of satin finish. Everything is very monotone and peaceful, and this created a little bit of visual drama. I think it shows how you can do that in a monochrome. The sofa is covered in one of my new alpaca fabrics that I’m launching in the fall. It’s called Gatsby, and it’s made

and this piece was perfect for that. It’s a series of black and white photos of trees on a piece of wood by a California artist, Rick Chapman. The photos are encircled, like the growth rings of a tree. I love his work, and we did a swap in exchange for a rug. The spindly three-legged stool is from Terrain in Westport, and the two small stools are African. Again, it’s about contrast; something dark against the white. And they have a very organic feeling, which is what I love about them in that space.

with a bath. That was the starting point. I wanted this bedroom area to be an oasis and have a sense of calm, but also to really be someplace I wanted to spend time and not just to be about the bed. —interview by jamie marshall

Any particular challenges you had to overcome in here? The bath, which

is by Victoria & Albert, was challenging because there’s a low ceiling on that side. Part of that room and the corridor leading to the shower area was originally an attic without any floorboards. The challenge was just negotiating the ceiling and not having the bath come too far into the room.

Your home has fantastic curb appeal. I want to walk right in! Tell me

This is the most beautiful garage I’ve ever seen! What is it used for?

about it. My home is named Rosebrook Gardens after the many roses

I parked my small car in there exactly once and never did it again. After that, it’s become my pool house without the pool, a garden studio, a bar, a place to get away from the rain, to read, to have tea. A custom staircase on the side takes you up to my real estate office, but most importantly this is an ideal place to view and celebrate the garden. Fun features like the faux fireplace with a living wall and the black and white handpainted checkerboard floor make it a special spot. I even have a custom garage door inspired by a recent trip to New Orleans’ French Quarter. It’s designed to look like the French doors I admire so much. I also had the gas lantern shipped from New Orleans, along with the lantern at the foot of my driveway. They burn 24/7 as an eternal flame for those who have blessed my life and come and gone.

on the property and the calming, meandering brook at the end of the street. When I bought it in 1997, it was new, not quite finished, and it was pink! The first month I owned it I repainted the exterior, took down trees and planted new ones, created new garden beds, pulled out the asphalt driveway and replaced it with crushed stone, installed copper gutters and built the garage. Over the years, I focused on renovation and replacements that upped style and function, with the addition of the pergola, a folly, side terrace, cedar shingle roof, custom fireplace and a new chimney and fire pit. I also installed a wonderful Dutch door as I believe their design underscores an air of hospitality. What’s the folly? It’s the cute little outbuilding at the foot of my driveway.

A folly, by definition, is “a useless decorative structure,” but mine is decorative and functional. It’s a glorified shed that houses my rubbish bin, recycling hub, gardening tools and real estate supplies.

What about this stunning pergola and outdoor dining space?

Because I don’t keep my car in the garage, I turned this section of the driveway into a functional dining space and parterre garden, set around a

beautiful outdoor dining table that sits under a wisteria-covered pergola. This is the most romantic place to entertain and appreciate Rosebrook Gardens, because you’re among all the finishes, twinkle lighting, and details like the custom-designed windows and planters. I organized the garden so that it’s beautiful to look at morning, noon and night, and it’s an amazing place to create memorable experiences. Night lighting and strategic spotlights take it to a whole new level of visual beauty after dark.

First, I made it a smart home so everything can be controlled by my phone, then I customized the front and back doors, the gardens, my studio, the terrace and splurged on outdoor lighting and an outdoor fireplace. I also had custom gates made for my white picket fence, built a special living room Gault Stone fireplace, and installed a Séura TV, which turns into a mirror when turned off. I always recommend elevating a space by doing custom work when possible, especially when it’s a smaller area, because every detail matters. Whether it’s cabinetry, millwork or making the outdoor areas beautiful, it’s about continuity and finding a familiar place for your eye to land and create comfort.

How did you choose this home? I looked at many, but this was a new

construction build that I could finish and make my own without worrying about the infrastructure, versus buying another home I could just make livable. I wanted this to look like an older home that had been renovated, and I knew it had great bones, windows and a fantastic layout. It’s also close to downtown Westport so I, or my house guests, can walk to town.

How much time do you spend in your kitchen? A lot. When I redesigned

it, I wanted a kitchen that was aesthetically beautiful, timeless and functional, yet I also wanted it to look like custom furniture, and Kitchens by Deane helped me achieve all these goals. I’m not a cook, but I know a great deal about designing kitchens, so I wanted some special features. My black custom La Cornue range is one, and the gray custom tile backsplash that Karen Berkemeyer Home created for me is another great accent.

What are some of the personal touches you added to your house?

I wanted to make this home look like it wasn’t cookie cutter construction, and the only way to do that was to do a deep dive with the details.

“She wanted a beautiful space that is also hardworking , so we chose the surfaces and seating for durability, in addition to their aesthetics .” —michelle morgan harrison

for which I did the interiors, which was another Coastal-built project. We clicked. She is the wife in a family of five, with three young boys, and had some specific ideas about what she wanted in her new home. She’s from California, and a lot of the ideas we decided on came from her style—she wanted things casual and relaxed, not formal. What were some of her priorities? She and her husband didn’t want a huge house, they wanted a livable, functional home. They’re a very active family. I joined when the floor plan was done and they were doing framing. They had already decided that they were going to use the room that would traditionally serve as a formal dining room as a studyhomework-craft room on the first floor. And they wanted the living and dining area—that one large room—to be everything. They wanted it to look a little different than the standard. In addition to an island where they could have breakfast and instead of a dining room, they wanted a central table that was usable, accessible and not precious. Everything needed to be family friendly. And while the design came together, there was a big debate: TV or no TV in the main space? And how did you solve that dilemma? The family room is the room that’s in the front, accessed through the living room area. In a lot of houses, this space would be the library. I wanted to make it really cozy, in deeper, darker tones. I wanted to design it so that you could use it as a library and also give it an enveloping feel, a getaway from the large bright spaces in the living-dining-kitchen area—someplace to curl up and read, or watch television.

this image: The live-edge, natural oak-topped dining table with its large, glowing chandelier from Ron Dier creates a focal point for the multifunctional living area. All surfaces are simultaneously glamorous and durable. Dual textiles—backs from Bradley USA and fronts from Fabricut—cover the Jessica Charles dining chairs.

Why did you use that beautiful blue barn door instead of a conventional opening? The door closes off the room, and we really filled it for maximum comfort. It’s a wonderful warm space for the family. By sliding the door open, the family room and the living room work together to make more seating for a larger gathering.

above left and bottom: The family moved into their home in mid-2019, so the home’s layout, and particularly this dedicated children’s workspace, became an ideal setup for the 2020 school year. A playful Blue Watercolor pattern from Schumacher for the ceiling and shades with a whimsical Agatha pendant by Luis Eslava Studio for LZF enliven the clean-lined space. Quartz desktops and white-painted homasote board for pinning art and to-do lists create easy-care workstations for three active boys.

For you, what are some of the home’s keynote features? The most important thing we did was work with textures, created with paneling, wallpapers and natural materials. I joked to the photographer that it’s almost like you want to call this house “Look Up” because there are so many great lighting fixtures and paper patterns that complete the design and make it unique.

Those hidden doors are a fun feature. What other surprises does this house hold? Starting with the foyer, the clean, straightforward and natural look of the space made its details very important. The textiles and papers we used throughout the house were chosen in tonal variations of steel blue from the lightest to the darkest, and the entry chandelier was certainly a critical detail. It’s made with beautiful, pale gray-blue leather.

Can we start at the front of the house—and the main entry? In the foyer, we wanted to do something other than a standard horizontal shiplap paneling, a popular treatment that we do use elsewhere—although we used a couple of panel widths to make it interesting. For this space, we used paneling in a large grid pattern overall—all the way to the ceiling of this double height space. The doors for the coat closet and powder room are hidden by the pattern, and so the paneling appears to be an uninterrupted wall surface.

How does this pattern of clean lines and eye-catching detail progress through the house? As you move from the entry toward the dining and kitchen area, we created a vestibule with two cased openings for a wet bar and wine space. We brought the color of the kitchen island into this transition point. But then, we gave it a special treatment with a fabulous wallpaper on the ceiling and midcentury-style light fixture. That is your gateway in. Then directly—dead center—in front of you is the live-edge oak dining table and its grand, rectilinear selenite chandelier.

opposite, top right: Well designed for its many functions, the mudroom hall is an axis for the family’s busy life. Its back entry door opens to the children’s play yard and an outdoor shower. But it is carefully appointed; hallway doors lead to a large closet and a powder room. As a crowning touch for the space, Michelle added custom hand-painted shades by Marie Burgos Designs for the ceiling fixtures. below left: the front entry offers a bench, hooks and plenty of storage, plus a low-maintenance gray porcelain plank tile floor. below right: the powder room is well equipped for the washing of small hands, with painted cabinetry and dramatic Samburu Nocturne wallpaper from Peter Fasano, also used on the ceiling of the front mudroom entry.

“When there’s a need for overflow seating , the barn door can be opened to the family room, and the blue chairs swivel so that they can face the activity wherever it’s happening .” —michelle morgan harrison

That’s quite a centerpiece. As you turn right, you’re in the kitchen. What informed your choices there? The client wanted to maximize the seating, so the T-shaped island achieved a large dining surface out of the path of the main work area of the kitchen. Along with the dining table, it’s natural oak, finished with conversion varnish so that this wood stands up to the client’s high-energy family. She wanted a beautiful space that is also hardworking, so we chose the surfaces and seating for durability, in addition to their aesthetics. Vinyl upholstery on the kitchen stools, and stain- and wear-resistant fabric were all must-haves. The natural oak open shelves all preserve the lightness and brightness of the space, and we chose tableware and accessories for the shelves that complement the overall palette and make an attractive display. And beyond the kitchen? There’s another barn door that can be closed between the kitchen and the mudroom hallway. Just beyond the kitchen is a pantry for more storage, and the entry to the children’s space for work, study and crafts. That kitchen barn door can be open to keep an eye on the children’s activity, or closed to create a sound barrier. What was the idea behind the lovely contemporary textile choice for the children’s space? The children love art—one of the boys is quite a talented artist—and the home’s wallpapers and decorative textiles capture some of that freehanded use of color and pattern, what I’d call a “painterly approach.” In the children’s space, the wallpaper on the ceiling and the same design for the fabric shades add some texture and energy, and the blue light fixture—it’s wood—is a perfect punctuation point for this room. Back to the main living area—the everything space. The fireplace wall of the living room space is simple, spare and beautiful. What is that single slab of stone? It’s Siberian White marble. Even though this living room is not huge, like the rest of the house, it’s hardworking, and there’s a nice energy in this arrangement. I love the shape of the armchairs in front of the patio door—they are just as

stylish as they are comfortable. When there’s a need for overflow seating, the barn door can be opened to the family room, and the blue chairs swivel so that they can face the activity wherever it’s happening.

And how did you make this happen? The mudroom is a hub for lots of activity. One end is at the foot of the back stairway, which leads to the second and third floors, and the space can be accessed from the kitchen and the children’s study. It also has three separate entries from outside the house: from its own door at the front of the house, from the back of the house where there’s a large open expanse of backyard and outdoor shower and from the garage. It’s doing quite a bit of work with a lot of style. There’s blue cabinetry, a built-in bench and a great wallpaper pattern on the ceiling and powder room walls. The space is lit by fantastic fixtures with hand-painted blue ombré shades. I love how it came together!

Before we go outdoors, we wanted to ask about the mudroom. What was your goal with this space? A family with three children means lots of movement in and out of the house, and the way this area works and looks was very important to the client. On the agenda were storage space for all the stuff, plus a clean and relaxed aesthetic with the same surprising accents that characterize the rest of the house.

In addition to a big yard for three active boys, how did you work the back of the property for the grown-ups and for entertaining? We continued the home’s relaxed aesthetic outdoors, with the landscape designed by Odd Job Landscaping. The furnishings and mechanical components are on the cutting edge, technically. We did this really fun, metal pergola design; press a button, and its louvers can be automatically opened and closed. Built-in heaters extend the season for using the outdoor space, and the outdoor fireplace was designed with an automatic pop-up television. The plan checked all the boxes of their wish list. —interview by judy ostrow Resources: Architectural interiors and interior design: Morgan Harrison Home, New Canaan; 203-594-7875; morganharrisonhome.com Design/Build: Coastal Luxury Homes, Westport; 203-984-6869; coastal-lux.com Landscape design: Odd Job Landscaping, Norwalk; 203-655-3332; oddjoblandscaping.com
