editor’s note /MAKING FUN

A

t this year’s A-List Awards, I made it a point to emphasize something that we consistently hear throughout the evening: This event is all about FUN. I love to hear this, and I wholeheartedly agree. There’s a palpable excitement in the air as the crowd gathers during cocktail hour—the buzz of old friends reuniting and new connections forming. With the program underway, cheers and applause fill the room as winners step on stage to accept their trophies in front of an audience of colleagues. I see the huge smiles, congratulating hugs, photos being taken, and cards exchanged, as the night winds down. It’s all a testament to the genuine camaraderie and celebration that define the A-List Awards. But of course, the fun only comes after all the hard work is done. From hundreds of submissions—and projects years in the making—our esteemed judges selected their favorites. I thank them all—Young Huh of Young Huh Interior Design, Douglas Wright of Douglas C. Wright Architects, Katie and Jason Maine of Maine Design, Josh Greene of Josh Greene Design, Melissa Reavis of Hollander Design Landscape Architects, and Philip Gorrivan of Philip Gorrivan Design—for volunteering their time and adding credibility to such fierce competition.

SCAN TO EXPLORE

I’ve no doubt you’ll find inspiration as you explore these award-winning spaces (p. 36). But also take note of all the names you see repeated across projects, from builders to landscape designers. These are the top talents and tradespeople working in our design community, and with this issue, you have them all listed in one place. A special note of appreciation goes out to our sponsors for their unwavering support and immense generosity. Your partnership is the foundation of our event, and your enthusiasm throughout the night is integral to that magical A-List energy. Catch them all—at the podium and amongst the crowd—in our party pages, starting on p. 24. Congratulations to all our remarkable winners and finalists. We are privileged to showcase your extraordinary work. I look forward to seeing returning and new faces next year and to planning another night of fun for us all.

A Shore Thing Westport-based CAILINI COASTAL is making waves with wallpaper, and soon, an upcoming space in Darien’s Corbin District

F

ounder and recent Westport transplant Meg Young launched Cailini Coastal to address what she saw as a gap in the luxury coastal home décor and furnishings market, dominated by a handful of national brands. Blending the styles from the seaside communities she knew—both in California and on the East Coast— she carved out a niche with offerings that reflect her fresh perspective on all things nautical, bringing the beauty of local beaches to customers worldwide through her e-commerce site. She hoped to capture the feeling of taking a leisurely stroll through a charming shoreline boutique, where each piece has a story to tell. As the wallcoverings category continued to grow, Young responded by expanding her assortment with her own line. The seven-piece collection was inspired by quintessential coastal elements, from

classic stripes and sailboats to seashells and blooming hydrangeas. Most are printed on grasscloth and paperweave, textures that she’d loved but had trouble finding without a trade account. And the company’s mission extends beyond offering stylish home décor. The brand is deeply committed to philanthropy, partnering with Family Promise, a national non-profit aiding low-income families and those experiencing homelessness. Their dedication led to substantial donations, exceeding $70,000 since their 2020 launch. After working together on her own home, Young is enlisting Lynn Morgan Design to get her brick-and-mortar store up and running. Stay tuned for updates on the shop, as well as holiday product launches currently in the works, from brush bottle trees to table linens. cailinicoastal.com

2023 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Style comes to Southport for annual fundraiser and showhouse ooms with a View, a cherished local tradition in its 28th year, becomes a design destination each November, an inspiring vision initiated by the beloved Albert Hadley back in 1995. Twelve talented designers will unveil their 6’ x 8’ x 8’ vignettes at the historic Southport Congregational Church over a weekend filled with industry events, lectures, book signings, and celebratory gatherings for the larger design community. Friday’s A Night at the Hadley invites trade professionals to explore the completed rooms and enjoy Christian P. Arkay-Leliever’s vision for the chapel, which will be transformed into an experiential cocktail space. His team is known for immersive hospitality projects around town, including the recently opened Esh in Fairfield. Host Amy Vischio will also lead the crowd of architects, brand representatives, interior designers, and landscape designers

in a fundraising effort for the New York School of Interior Design/Rooms with a View Scholarship Fund. The scholarship supports an undergraduate or graduate interior design student at NYSID, who will also be invited to create a vignette at next year’s event.

This planner is more than just a scheduling tool; it’s a visual odyssey captured by awardwinning photographer and Fairfield resident Jane Beiles. In 52 Weeks, you’ll find breathtaking interiors, flourishing gardens, artists’ sanctuaries, and awe-inspiring vistas. The sunken tub, once a perilous element, was replaced by a freestanding matte-finished model, crowned by a chandelier that doubled as a work of art. Motorized shades on the new windows allow for views of the pool, lush gardens, and the surrounding woodlands. Perhaps the most impressive feature: a 10-foot-tall curbless steam shower, a sanctuary fabricated from star-fire tempered glass, concealing a linear Mr. Steam unit, a high CFM fan, and a nearly invisible wall drain. With a flush-mounted ceiling rain-head and a soothing wall chute, the experience is akin to showering beneath a waterfall. Stepping out onto heated Ditra floors, the client can head straight into her new boutique-style closet, a space that was carved out to accommodate her extensive collection of shoes and bags.

mid COVID, Alexis Parent Interiors dove into the dramatic transformation of this sprawling 7,000-square-foot estate. The client, a savvy investment banker with an undeniable flair for fashion, sought to breathe new life into her Fairfield County home. The previous state of the primary bathroom—a gloomy cavern, devoid of natural light, with a decrepit steam room and cramped vanity rooms—was a far cry from the client’s vision. Luckily, Parent saw the potential for a space that was open, contemporary, and spa-like, all while preserving the individuality that her client requested. Walls were shifted, allowing sunlight to stream in, and the pièce de résistance became the fully customized “his and hers” 93-inch vanities, boasting 30” reverse incline sinks adorned with Swarovski crystal-infused chrome fixtures that resembled fine jewelry.

Wild at Heart

rom the imaginative collaboration of VanderHorn Architects and Stephanie Woodmansee of Henry & Co Design, Where the Wild Things Are comes vividly to life in this kid’s bedroom. It was dreamed up for the clients’ youngest child, who requested an escape that captured the essence of the beloved book. A custom loft creates the perfect hideaway or reading spot, where stocked built-in shelves extend to the room’s high ceiling. With clever engineering, the bookcase cabinets fit around the stepping masonry of the concealed

chimney, ingeniously capitalizing on every available inch. Underneath, a cozy twin bed is tucked under its tented frame, but the alcove allows for an eventual queen size setup, setting the stage for a seamless transition as the child grows. A forest of trees wrap the walls in mural paper from Rebel Walls, encouraging exploration and establishing a palette of leafy greens that appear elsewhere on the rug, leather pouf, dresser, bed canopy, and lamps. Whimsical touches like the lion rug

and mushroom stool offer additional spots for story time or play, while mounted animal heads keep with the wildlife theme. Checks on the bedding and upholstered chairs add sophistication and color, proving that kidfriendly choices can be stylish, too. You can easily picture the rumpus happening here on any given day: from climbing the ladder to the loft to getting lost in books or in games of make-believe. The end result speaks to the magic of thoughtful design, where every detail has been meticulously considered.

Ascending to the second floor, an office and guest bedrooms await, in addition to a roof deck that offers panoramic views of the entire property. Connecting these levels is a white steelframed staircase, a distinct feature that speaks to the house’s modernity. What sets this project apart is its ability to incorporate diverse elements, from a pool and stone terrace to a sleek bar and lounge, an entertaining kitchen, a golf simulator, two bedrooms, a fully functional trading office, and even a two-car garage—all while maintaining a consistent design language.

his is not just any pool house; it’s a suburban oasis, a vacation paradise right in the backyard. After a successful working relationship with the clients on their French Normandy home, Alisberg Parker Architects returned for something a little more fun: a contemporary pool house that stands boldly on its own. A blend of materials—including stone veneer and cast stone elements—and colors ties the two structures together, creating a masterpiece that fits easily within the landscape. With a full-size basketball court tucked away underground and revealed only by the curved cedar roof, the building becomes a true work of art. To accommodate the clients’ requests, the team created three distinct levels, each with its own purpose. The sports basement, home to the

Artful Entry

D

photography by jane beiles

iana Byrne of DB Design’s vision for this home was clear: maximize the breathtaking views, inside and out. Landscaping was meticulously cleared and reshaped, the exterior was rejuvenated with a fresh coat of paint and limewash, and every interior space was reimagined. But the story truly began at the entryway. Achieving a delicate balance between a warm, inviting welcome and an immediate visual impact was paramount. Windows played a starring role in the renovation, carefully deciding which ones would remain among the newer installations. A brilliant idea, born in the home office, blossomed, when an entire wall was opened to allow natural light and panoramic vistas to flood in. Bringing this idea into the entry, small, traditional smaller panes and French doors were replaced with expansive glass sliders and oversized windows. The redesigned front door, flanked by wide sidelights, revealed a clear line of sight to the water. Every detail—material, color, framing—was carefully orchestrated to harmonize the new windows with the home’s original architecture and design. The staircase, a focal point, retained its unique details while shedding the weight of elements that felt cumbersome and dated. A new wallpaper cocooned the room, lending warmth to the double-height ceilings. Then came the Lindsey Adelman light—a linear marvel that highlighted the ceiling’s grandeur without eclipsing nature’s splendor just beyond the glass. In every season, the entry provides an artful introduction to a home that blends the classic with the contemporary, all through the lens of windows framing nature’s beauty.

Rewriting History To breathe new life into the kitchen and expand its footprint, a gabled wing was conceived, mirroring the exterior details of the original house. This addition embraced a vaulted lounge area, complete with a grand fieldstone fireplace crowned with a limestone surround. Reminiscent of Crabtree’s work, thick plaster Tudor arches framed the breakfast and cooking areas, an ode to the home’s origins, while antique limestone flooring forged a connection throughout. A masterful mix of materials showed up in the food prep area. Calacatta Macchia Oro marble provided a backdrop for the bronze range hood, stainless steel island drawers were finished with burnished brass hardware, and antique stone flooring grounded the space against the marble counters. Hand-blown glass pendants above the island crafted an artful contrast to the room’s classic symmetrical arrangement.

n 1931, the architect Walter P. Crabtree, Jr. was commissioned to create a Tudor Revival manor amongst a neighborhood with distinguished period homes. With meticulous artistry, he wove an illusion of antiquity using irregularly placed bricks and intentionally cracked slate, creating a exterior that would stand the test of time. Inside, gracious rooms were adorned with oak ceiling beams, slate floors, and sumptuous plaster arches. Fast forward ninety years, and the current owners of this architectural gem sought to pay homage to Crabtree’s original vision. The plan included a larger, open kitchen that would effortlessly blend dining and lounging, all while working with the home’s original rooms. The butler’s pantry, in need of an overhaul, would be given its deserved attention, and an inviting bar would emerge from an enclosed porch.

it’s the custom bar that steals the spotlight, a fusion of glass, brass, and marble over a reeded oak base that transitions easily from morning coffee hub to the evening’s luminous focal point, just in time for sunset cocktail hour. Phillip Jeffries’ wallcovering, aptly named “Flight,” features embroidered cranes soaring through clouds, and served as the muse that ignited the creative spark for this entire space. Splashes of the calming blue colorway are pulled directly from the paper—which peeks in from the hall outside the kitchen—and show up on the rug, on the teal vellum-textured high-gloss cabinet, and on the dining room chairs that surround the sculptural Dunes and Duchess table. A permanent seascape frames the backdrop of this family’s bustling life, inviting the outside in—the sun, the surf, and the sand—to calm the senses and create the ultimate relaxation retreat.

eghan De Maria and Courtney Yanni of Moss Design reunited with repeat clients looking to tackle their dream home on the Long Island Sound shoreline. After the success of their initial project, the family of five called on the design team to work their magic and mold it into a place that bore the distinct mark of their personal style. In this case, that meant drawing on the wife’s preference for glamorous touches, informed by her New Jersey roots. Reimagining the quintessential New England coastal design through this prism, opulent marble, gold, and glass were woven into every corner of this kitchen. New countertops, a fresh Walker Zanger backsplash, and white oak wrapped beams created an elevated neutral base. From there, flecks of gold appear on the island pendants, hardware, faucets, and sink. above: This light-filled kitchen blends natural wood tones with white and black accents. These elements, along with showstopping Arabascato Marble slabs, served as the palette across the space.

The breakfast nook became a more inviting spot, outfitted with furniture that better suits the scale and shape of the room. Family members can also enjoy meals at the reeded oak island, which was enlarged to accommodate additional seating and storage, and exemplifies the seamless fusion of form and function. In a similar ingenious move, wine storage was relocated from the basement to this new prime entertaining area. A fixed monochromatic palette meant that materials and finishes could go in bolder directions. Arabascato marble, characterized by its unique movement and veining, adds drama to the backsplash and walls, while a more kid-friendly quartz covers the island. Handsome oversized matte black hardware adds a welcome contrast against the incorporated appliance wall. And for balance, textural layers of wood and cotton rope soften the hard lines and invoke the beauty of beach town living.

tudio Seva embraced a holistic approach for the gut renovation of this Westport kitchen. Her vision for the new space was one she dubbed, “Organic Modern,” filled with light, natural elements, and a modernized but minimalist aesthetic. With the floor plan mostly unchanged, the team focused their attention on every detail, nook, and cranny to achieve perfection elsewhere. Dated upper cabinetry was removed, paving the way for custom flat panel versions that would redefine the kitchen’s character, along with the introduction of brand-new appliances, fixtures, and finishes. The oak floors, previously a dark honey tone, were treated to a white-washed finish. Heavy trim and moldings that once weighed down the space disappeared, ushering in a cleaner look, while an exterior was wall opened up to reveal an oversized picture window, welcoming natural light and brightening the home’s heart.

ituated on a picturesque street in Dover, MA, this historic home, originally built in 1774, had undergone numerous transformations over the years. This sunroom, with its beautiful underlying structure, was in dire need of a makeover, shedding its dated exterior. The Camden Grace Interiors team started from the ground up, refinishing the sun-damaged hardwood floors. Then came the removal of the existing wet bar and built-ins, making way for a tailored space that aligned with the family’s storage and entertainment needs. Every decision was thoughtfully considered, from upholstery to rugs, ensuring they could withstand both the test of time and the room’s exposure to bright sunlight. home’s storied past. The aim was to create an inviting, multi-functional space with a contemporary twist on traditional design. A soothing color palette of neutrals—punctuated by muted blues and greens—was based on hand-painted ornamentation found in the main house. Carefully chosen fabrics injected a fresh spirit into the room’s traditional feel. The layout catered to modern family needs, providing storage for toys, an entertainment center, and a game table for cozy nights in. Custommade emerald green game chairs in Perennials velvet invite drinks with friends or board games with the kids, adding a vibrant pop to the space. Tackling the room’s lengthy and narrow dimensions proved to be a challenge. The goal was to define distinct areas while ensuring each could comfortably accommodate gatherings, a puzzle expertly solved by the design team.

his magnificent 11,000-square-foot new construction project proved the power of creativity and resilience, brought to life for an active family of six. Despite the challenges that came with embarking on a project as the world was shutting down due to COVID-19, Christian Rae Studio stayed focused on their mission: to craft spaces that exuded elegance while remaining entirely family-friendly. As the pandemic continued, the American floor plan underwent a transformation. The new ideal was a home with open, flowing spaces that embraced connectivity and communication, yet still offered private and

tranquil retreats. This living room, positioned at the heart of the residence, embodied this philosophy. It seamlessly opened to a spacious kitchen with two islands and a cozy breakfast nook—a perfect hub for family meals. From the grand main entryway, it flows to an “adult wing” featuring a formal lounge and his-andhers offices, all connected by an art-adorned gallery corridor with custom millwork panels. In designing the room, the aim was to create a family gathering spot that commanded architectural attention as the home’s centerpiece while maintaining the cozy intimacy of a TV room, comfortably accommodating a gathering of ten. The

soaring ceilings, adorned with cove lighting and coffers, imbued the room with an air of grandeur and impeccable proportion. However, it was the carefully chosen furnishings and its connection to the kitchen and outdoor spaces that made it the epitome of family-friendly design. The masterful integration of steel details that adorned the fireplace surround, the illuminated glass cabinets flanking the hearth, and the transom that gracefully separated the family space from the adjacent kitchen in the open floor plan are favorite features. These elements added a touch of contemporary elegance to the room’s timeless design.

Rustic Beauty

O

cean Meadow, an enchanting Fishers Island property, beckons you to escape to a world of rustic beauty. Set high above the Atlantic, this hidden gem resides within a meticulously designed residential park envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. in the 1920s. Olmsted’s genius laid the foundation for the park’s meandering lanes and elevated homesites, back when the island’s vistas stretched across native grasslands dotted with rugged boulders. A century later, this once-pristine canvas had succumbed to dense brush and invasive vines. Luckily, Haver & Skolnick Architects teamed up with Race Rock Garden Co. and hatched

a plan that sought to recapture Olmsted’s original dream. Eventually, a path revealed itself: to resurrect the spirit of the meadow, to restore the native grasslands, and to provide an idyllic setting for a new tower house, perched on the highest point of the land. The overarching concept followed the clients’ aspiration for a landscape that embodied both simplicity and sustainability, in sync with the neighboring protected lands. Selecting drought-resistant plantings proved paramount, given the sandy soil and sundrenched site. In keeping with Olmsted’s legacy, the lush meadow stretched its arms across the property, woven with pathways that

gently led to the house and driveway. Along the edges of this meadow, the woodlands unveiled a trove of mature oak, hickory, maple, and elegant cherry trees. Taming invasive underbrush beneath the trees, the landscape design embraced native inkberry, winterberry, and bayberry shrubs. Around the home, decorative plantings were selected to complement native grasses. Their beds, adorned with beach stones and colossal boulders, concealed an underground roof drainage system. A jumbo bluestone terrace provides an additional vantage point, while a strategically placed copper outdoor shower gifted its visitors with ocean views.

A Verdant Vision At the heart of the garden stands an allée of Parrotia persica trees, their branches forming a stately corridor. Along the way, rectangular planting beds brim with vibrant perennials, mirroring the rhythm set by the trees and pathways. Encircling the garden, evergreen hedges and rounded shrubs cocoon this outdoor sanctuary. Yet, the true masterpiece lies in the hardscape, where reclaimed granite slabs serve as pathways and steps, guiding you from manicured lawns to gravel spaces. These time-weathered stones, handpicked for this project, exude history and charm. Local fieldstone was used for retaining walls, with warm tones that harmonize with the gravel and antique granite slabs, forging a seamless unity within the landscape. What truly sets this project apart is its masterful organization, crafting purposeful spaces within the constraints of a compact site.

etween two imposing structures, this weekend garden emerges as an outdoor oasis, where family gathers against an intimate yet diverse backdrop. Once completely covered in pavement, this garden now exists as a haven for secluded al fresco leisure. An exquisite blend of hardscape elements and lush greenery shapes a well-organized garden, an inviting sanctuary sheltered from neighboring homes and the nearby roadway. The transformation was dramatic—a sloping, rectangular parking expanse reborn as a verdant retreat. The design palette, elegantly understated, celebrates stone, gravel, and botanicals, choreographed to define spaces and dictate purpose. An outdoor kitchen, a bespoke fire feature, a bocce court embraced by stone walls, and inviting dining areas—all contribute to an array of opportunities for relaxation.

Black and white prints of iconic rock ’n’ roll moments serve as a visual narrative of music history. Keith Richards and Debbie Harry are now part of the audience, for the moments when the client spends time playing his own instruments. The project’s challenges yielded ingenious solutions. n the heart of this home, a hidden treasure awaits: a wine lover’s dream. The setting for this magical subterranean experience was an unfinished basement, a space of varying head heights, columns, and intricate service lines. Yet, in this constricted setting, a challenge was met with creativity. With a limited footprint of just 250 square feet, including the installation of a fully insulated climate-controlled cellar and concealed access to mechanical spaces, the stage was set for innovation. The solution was as bold as it was elegant, a series of arching passageways that would encompass storage, serving, and seating areas. These arches, crafted with meticulous detail, recall the same materials and play of light and shadow found throughout the rest of the home. Upon entering, a ribbed glass door from the main-level pantry leads you into the cellar’s depths. Guests descend the dimly lit staircase illuminated by recessed step lights to a moody hallway with a rich green ceiling and storage walls, offering a glimpse of what lies beyond. At the bottom of the stairs, you are greeted by a large arched window, which provides a stunning frame for a bright tiled groin vault. This motif repeats itself in an antiqued wall of mirrors. The black window frames, brass accents, and the intricate tile patterns also echo the design elements found upstairs, creating a seamless transition from one space to another. Within the intimate confines of this cellar, capable of housing 300 bottles, you find more than just storage. Tiled niches, with glass shelves and cove lights, proudly display extra-large specialty bottles, decanters, and wine crates. A well-appointed wet bar and plush velvet loveseats beckon you to linger in the speakeasy-style tasting room.

M

ichelle Morgan Harrison teamed up with James Schettino Architects to build her clients’ dream home in Lexington, Kentucky’s picturesque horse country. The owners—a California-raised husband and wife from Kentucky—hoped that the Connecticut-based firms shared in their vision of creating something distinct among the local landscape. The result is a house that blends West Coast casual style with a more refined New England farmhouse look, but, at its core, it pulsates with the spirit of Kentucky. Inside, you’ll find natural oak, rich and inviting hues, accents of black and saddle leather, and a generous sprinkling of lush greenery throughout the house. It’s an homage to Kentucky’s new design spirit, embracing both tradition and innovation in its décor. Venturing into the basement, a different atmosphere unfolds—one of modern transition

with a sleek black and white palette, alongside dark metals and graphic patterns. A true playground for all ages, it boasts a basketball court, complete with a viewing area that overlooks the action, a game zone, a media enclave, a fully stocked bar, a golf simulator with a lounge, and a gym. Challenges were inevitable, particularly in uniting these expansive spaces and infusing warmth into a basement setting. Morgan Harrison Home responded by sticking to the strict palette and layering materials across rooms to tie them together. In the media area, built-in storage units also blend with the bar’s shelving. On the walls, a gallery includes horse racing photos and art, an ode to the rich equestrian culture that defines the Bluegrass State, and a reminder of the local roots that ground this home in its unique sense of place.

Home Court

hen asked to build this extensive pool house project, the Alisberg Parker Architects team jumped at the opportunity, especially because the request included plans for a full-size indoor basketball court, among other entertaining spaces. However, the court had to reside well below ground level due to height restrictions, a twist that would spark the creation of a truly breathtaking space. The underlying design concept was clear from the outset—this wouldn’t be just another industrial-style indoor basketball court. They started with the exploration of glulam beams as the structural backbone, poised to deliver

the sweeping spans required for the court while becoming the defining visual feature of the space. Beyond the court itself, the clients’ wish list included a dedicated locker room for players and a golf simulator hangout area for post-game relaxation. Amidst the numerous captivating elements, one feature stands out as the favorite: the awe-inspiring 27-foot-high domed ceiling, supported by exposed, gracefully curved beams. It’s a rare treat to transform structural elements into decorative masterpieces, and in this case, it was a resounding success. These wood glulam beams, thoughtfully stained to mirror the white oak elements throughout the

building, harmoniously frame the ceiling. The biggest hurdle was the intricate integration of the roof, structure, and their myriad components. Creating a spacious underground realm, with tons of earth pressing in, concealing ductwork and motorized shades within the ceiling, meticulously detailing a curved roof, and engineering the beams to be simultaneously cost-effective, structurally sound, and visually stunning—it was an undertaking of epic proportions. A glimpse into the clerestory windows teases at what lies beneath, but the true magnitude of this structural triumph only dawns on guests as they step onto the court.

A portion of the original kitchen was transformed into a sun-drenched breakfast room. In 2018, the property changed hands, and Hilton’s work continued. Additions included two garage bays, a convenient mudroom, and an expanded and fully renovated kitchen. The entry vestibule was reimagined as a paneled entryway, marked by classical detailing and a new balustrade. The once-prominent pink stucco façade was replaced by a brilliant white finish, and the roof was stained in a contrasting charcoal hue. Interior spaces got their own makeover, with the help of Cobble Court Interiors. The second floor was extensively reconfigured to accommodate modern living, with bedrooms gaining en suite bathrooms and walk-in closets. The grand transformation extended to the basement, which now features a basketball court, a golf simulator room, a fully stocked bar, a well-equipped gym, and staff quarters.

he process of restoring the historic residence known as Eastover has been a years-long project for Charles Hilton Architects. Constructed in 1916 for Henry Steers, a construction tycoon of the early 20th century, this stately home has undergone a remarkable transformation. It began in 2005, when Hilton’s team was summoned by the previous owners. The estate bore the weight of neglect, with a flat roof covered in a pink EIFS topcoat. Both the exterior and interior exhibited signs of water damage and the toll of deferred maintenance. The project began with an exterior facelift. A striking sloped terracotta roof replaced the flat expanse, crowned by an exquisite cornice. Doors, windows, and insulation systems underwent a meticulous upgrade. The façade was refreshed with a new stucco finish and trim. Inside, rooms that overlooked the Sound were restored, preserving the home’s character. Among them, the primary bedroom, living room, family room, and dining room regained their former glory.

hen a young family relocated from New York City to Westport, they called on Denise Davies of D2 Interieurs to transform their new home. It was a big job—five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, three half bathrooms— spread over 9,500 square feet of living space, along with a pool in the backyard. But Davies was up for the challenge, knowing she could produce an interior plan that would exude elegance and sophistication while standing up to the joyful chaos of young kids. The clients envisioned a predominantly neutral color palette, which Davies masterfully delivered, with the artful incorporation of sumptuous textures, rich fabrics and window treatments, bespoke lighting fixtures, and carefully curated artworks. In the dining room, family and guests can gather around a custom-crafted oak table, its white-washed finish perfectly complemented by a lacquered base. Surrounding this centerpiece, upholstered chairs with Holly Hunt indoor/ outdoor bouclé fabric provide not only comfort but a sense of understated luxury. The walls, wrapped in metallic grasscloth by Phillip Jeffries, create a subtle, shimmering backdrop, adding depth to the room’s aesthetic. Yet, what truly elevates this dining experience is the presence of captivating artwork by Jenna Krypell, an artist whose unique style and perspective weave a captivating narrative into the room’s design. alla Cane brought her signature magic to this project, transforming a raw space into a sophisticated venture capital office where simplicity and style reign supreme. The scope encompassed the creation of four private offices, a well-appointed conference room, a welcoming reception area, and a kitchen and dining space. Every aspect was considered, down to the smallest details, including the utensils. The team’s vision was to craft an environment that easily blended openness and functionality, making it an inviting workspace and a conducive setting for meetings. The private offices encircle a central meeting hub, featuring a beautifully designed kitchen, a comfortable dining area, and a relaxed lounge space. The desire was for the finishes to convey elegance while maintaining an overall relaxed spatial flow. To infuse a personal touch, Cane carefully curated commissioned art

pieces, adding a sense of individuality to the space. One of the standout features is the custom steel frame door system that envelopes the interior shell of the office. Its exceptional quality and craftsmanship not only serve to create spatial divisions but also introduce an architectural element that elevates the entire space. This office was conceived and brought to life during the peak of the pandemic, demanding the utmost attention to the safety and well-being of the employees. To address this, the design team installed a state-of-the-art, multi-unit HVAC system equipped with private room controls and advanced venting systems. This innovative setup not only ensures maximum comfort for every individual within the office but also minimizes the risk of airborne illnesses, allowing each space to maintain precise temperature control and providing peace of mind for all.

ucky guests of Grace Rosenstein have the pleasure of staying in this winning bedroom, a space in the designer’s own home that reflects her talent for transformation. The retreat was dreamed up as part of a gut renovation of her 1950s Cape Cod, a project that saw the house stripped to its bones. With the rebuild in process, Rosenstein focused her design plan on updates to accommodate modern living and her growing family, while honoring the historical charm of the original house. After refinishing hardwood floors and updating windows, doors and millwork, Rosenstein focused on the fun part: filling the home with furniture and finishes that echoed the cozy ambience of her English bed and breakfast inspiration. Despite the small footprint of this guest room, she opted for a grand Serena & Lily canopy bed, which makes the space feel more substantial. It’s a cocoon of comfort, draped in Cowtan and Tout check fabric in golden tones that add inviting warmth. Every piece of accompanying furniture—from custom oak nightstands to an antique chest—was carefully chosen with consideration for scale and flow. Rosenstein was also able to pull from a personal collection of items that she’d been lovingly gathering over time. In addition to the chest, vintage botanical prints and a bench found their place here, proving the power of mixing old and new. Finishing touches include French ceramic lamps and a rattan mirror, which hangs against the silk wallpaper that wraps the room.

basement for off season storage. The open-air pavilion is the true heart of the structure, where game nights and shared meals come alive. Reclaimed wood with timber structural trusses on the ceiling adds warmth, yet yields to the panoramic view, inviting the outdoors in. The pool fence presented a challenge that demanded a creative solution. No one wanted a barrier to mar the view between the pool and the expanse beyond. So, Dean’s team planned to elevate the pool terrace and the north side of the pool house above the surrounding terrain. A seamless landscape transition conceals the fence’s presence as you approach, allowing the vista to take center stage. On the south side, the fence transforms into a boundary, marking the end of the great lawn and the beginning of an intimate garden.

n its design, this Nantucket pool house pays homage to the island’s timeless architectural traditions. Simplicity reigns supreme, with an emphasis on clean lines, effortless elegance, and above all, an embrace of the breathtaking water views. A versatile sanctuary, this retreat is a seamless extension of the main house. Divided into two pavilions linked by an inviting open space, it offers plenty of possibilities—a space for group gatherings, a getaway for guests, or a summer escape. The first pavilion includes a kitchen, a full bathroom, a changing room on the ground floor, and a bedroom on the second floor. The second pavilion transforms into a game room, topped by another bedroom above. An outdoor pavilion, with ceiling heaters and a welcoming fireplace, beckons guests to linger long into the night. ucked away in the Litchfield woods, this Colonial compound stands as a testament to the art of designing not just a home but an idyllic refuge—a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life, meticulously crafted for a young family. Every inch of this residence proves the power of thoughtful design, in consideration of the family’s current and future plans. Comprising a magnificent six-bedroom main house, a pool house with two bedrooms, and a car barn that houses a collection of luxury vehicles, this complex is more than just a home. It extends against the backdrop of Connecticut’s rolling hills and landscapes, the picturesque setting informing all design decisions, inside and out. And there’s more to come—a three-part storage barn, ready to house recreational vehicles, serve as a workshop, and store logs for colder months. The main house, ensconced behind a majestic allée of trees, comprises a symmetrical main volume attached to a garage by a graceful glassy connector. The exterior palette, a union of slate shingle roofs, pristine white clapboard, and deep blue shutters, is an ode to classic aesthetics. Gabled porticos and cupolas, those understated yet defining details, tether the buildings to traditional architecture, all while exuding the simplicity that the clients requested. At the rear of the main house, a canvas of terraces and screened porches invites outdoor lounging. Inside, the architecture unfolds as a rich and timeless backdrop, a complement for the owners’ modern taste in décor. Every element was carefully considered, to evoke the aura of a storied and well-preserved historic home.

ithin a pristine tidal wetlands landscape, this residence stands on the fine line between earth and water. With a keen eye for capturing the beauty of its surroundings, this project takes full advantage of the breathtaking bay views, framed by protected wetlands that serve as a living canvas, ever-changing with the ebb and flow of tides. Yet, it’s not just the stunning vistas over the wetlands that sets it apart; it’s the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces. The architecture unfolds with an openconcept living area, six bedrooms, and six half baths, all thoughtfully designed to

embrace the natural world. A three-season room with sliding doors beckons the outside in, connecting with the inviting pool and outdoor living area. The detached garage, which includes a home office, greets you at the property’s entrance. The stunning landscape becomes an extension of the home, with water gardens, an elevated pool that seems to merge with the land, and a hand-dug channel that connects the house and the marsh. This design ingeniously reimagines the “shotgun house” model, defying the limitations of a narrow buildable envelope while delivering a panorama of northern and eastern water

views. Natural cedar shingles and planks, paired with expansive glass, lend to an ageless aesthetic that effortlessly marries the modern with the timeless. The Austin Patterson Disston Architecture & Design team’s greatest triumph was turning constraints into creative opportunities. Regulations of zoning and tidal wetlands could have stifled innovation, but instead, they ignited inspiration. Each challenge became a source of motivation, resulting in a design that thrives on navigating the intricate interplay of regulatory demands, site conditions, and ambitious aspirations within a limited buildable footprint.

or Prudence Bailey of Prudence Home and Design, the aim was to astonish with ingenuity, utilizing uncommon materials to make this powder room distinct. With close collaboration, she shaped her Westport clients’ vision into reality, exploring their art collection to decode their aesthetic preferences. Despite the small space, simplicity was chosen to invoke a “wow” factor. Each element was purposefully selected and woven together to tell the clients’ story. A standout feature is the luminous chartreuse shade, infusing life into the space. The absence of this silky hue would leave the room incomplete, and it also provides a welcome contrast against the Pose Poli Tulip Black marble flooring from AKDO. This compact room stands as a testament to opulence, uniting sumptuous marble, a custom Palmer Stiletto polished nickel console, luxe Dedar fabric, lustrous paint, a bespoke mirror, Martyn Lawrence Bullard lights, and whimsical Where’s Andy Warhol wallpaper. The result is a splendid and sophisticated sanctuary.

ransplanted from California, the owners sought to infuse a laidback vibe into their 7,900-square-foot Tudor home in Connecticut. Despite its impressive carved wood accents and stone staircase, the house required a design overhaul due to awkward layouts and outdated spaces. SKM Design LLC executed a comprehensive transformation, aiming for a clean, uncomplicated aesthetic. The rejuvenated bathroom, once outdated, has been reborn as a spacious spa haven, boasting a sauna, freestanding bath, dual shower, and heated floors, expertly blending modernity with the home’s classic charm. The team ingeniously repurposed space from the primary bedroom to create two walk-in closets and expand the bath space. Strategically breaking down a wall between windows allowed for a freestanding tub area flooded with natural light, while the sauna and shower were placed to maximize luminosity. Soft grays, light woods, and whites set the minimalist tone, enhanced by the natural wood vanity and quartz countertop.

n this primary bathroom, a brilliant mix of design elements synthesizes to create a luxurious retreat. The sunburst floor tiles’ muted hues play against the backdrop of pristine white walls and custom vanities, casting a spotlight on their intricate beauty. Wall paneling effortlessly marries clean lines with a traditional aesthetic, conjuring an atmosphere that is both crisp and timeless. The ingenuity extends to the recessed panel layout, an artful integration of mirrors, lighting, and medicine cabinets, which caters to the dual sinks centered around a charming window. An glass chandelier lights the space, perfectly paired with picture rail moulding that crowns the nearly full-height paneling. This design ensemble accentuates the cathedral ceiling, an architectural flourish that magnifies the room’s openness and airiness. While the monochromatic palette, bold floor pattern, and unassuming mouldings lean towards transitional elegance, the chandelier recalls the essence of the home’s stately Colonial Revival exterior, forging a seamless connection between the contemporary and the traditional.

While the house was vacant, a tornado ripped through the area, tearing off the existing roof and second-floor walls. From the unexpected storm emerged opportunity—a resilient rebirth. This abode celebrates sophistication and comfort, infusing natural light and capturing mesmerizing views. A private beach provides a picturesque backdrop, mirrored in the home’s blue and gray themes. Soaring illusions of ceilings, a wine room adorned with alder wood, and a Savant-controlled system showcase innovation. n Greenwich, an ingenious revitalization of a 8,200-square-foot 1930s house yielded a contemporary gem from a disjointed past. Tasked with Passive House Certification and Net Zero energy use, the team embraced clean design to work within the existing footprint, adding 800 usable square feet by tapping into the attic space, which now serves as a media and game hideaway. The design prioritized both connectivity and sustainability, exemplified by a relocated kitchen that fosters unity between indoors and outdoors. Amid pandemic-induced challenges, the project evolved from a weekend escape to a primary residence, highlighting the firm’s adaptability to changing demands. Concealed strengths distinguish this project: efficient systems, a robust thermal envelope, and meticulous air barrier detailing synergize for a high-performance home. meticulous gut renovation transformed this 1950s Cape Cod, revitalizing it down to its core. Cedar shingle roofing, siding, and copper gutters wrap and frame the exterior, complemented by a spacious front porch and integrated bluestone hardscaping. Inside, the home’s original charm was lovingly rejuvenated, refreshing oak hardwood floors, and replacing windows, doors, and millwork. The kitchen’s transformation erased its boundaries, creating an open connection to the adjacent living room. Strategic design was pivotal for the modest footprint, and every square inch was considered for functional family living. Careful placement of appliances, removal of a wall, and the addition of a central island expanded the space, marrying beauty and utility. And with design dilemmas resolved, Rosenstein could focus on artful touches like the integrated marble sink, bespoke plaster range hood, rich brass hardware, and warm textural moments on woven window shades and bar stools.

estled against a stunning waterfront backdrop, this home yearned for a vibrant transformation from its outdated past—marked by its fussy moldings, archaic archways, and columns. Thoughtful solutions like touch outlets and paneled appliances freed room for expansive windows, while the Galley workstation and BlueStar range orchestrated a culinary haven. reating a family retreat was paramount—an oasis where both adults and children could rely on comfort. A gathering spot for TV watching and game playing, the room is grounded in neutral tones yet enlivened by performance fabrics and vibrant accents. Designing with all family members in mind, lulu Home balanced adult shelving above and kid-friendly concealed cabinets below—a fusion of practicality and sophistication. A custom coffee table takes

center stage, flanked by versatile mohair ottomans, epitomizing form and function. Space optimization posed a puzzle; balancing ample seating without clutter. Creativity prevailed—nesting ottomans and a console-hugging bench offered elegant solutions. The commissioned abstract painting by Holly Addi proved a stroke of brilliance, tailored in size and color to meld with the Thayer Coggin sectional.

ith artistic finesse, Merrin Jones Interiors breathed life into this once unremarkable builder-grade living room. A sanctuary where the clients unwind with a book post-kids’ bedtime or gather friends for evening drinks, this space was tailored to perfection. Accommodating six seats without overwhelming the room’s openness became proof of the team’s ingenuity. The transformation was also marked by other strategic choices—windows painted black, decorative lighting fixtures introduced, and the fireplace imbued with heightened drama. Budget-conscious fireplace refinement showcased creative prowess—the existing surround was painted black and adorned with porcelain soapstone. Greige nuances took center stage, anchored by soothing olive green and unexpected pillow hues. A bespoke coffee table and daybed also stand out as a chic ensemble, the daybed’s bolster providing an exquisite touch. The result is a blend of sophistication and warmth, mirroring the modern farmhouse aesthetic.

hiel Architecture + Design embarked on a journey fueled by a young couple’s aspirations—a home that seamlessly intertwined beauty, joy, and cohesion within their 1882 Hoboken townhouse. This space radiates light, happiness, and childcentric vibrancy—combining comfort with playful furnishings, a successful blend of function and flair. In a bold move, Thiel dismantled the existing but unused fireplace— an architectural eyesore—with a sprawling 27-foot banquette, elegantly merging living and dining spaces while restoring spaciousness and openness. Below, ample toy storage is concealed; above, there’s room to play, create, and dine. With gentle woods and grays, modern furnishings took on a sculptural aura, while Knoll Textiles’ citrus hues mingled with bursts of vivacious blue. And by infusing the design with classic panel moldings, sparkling sconces, and charming rosettes, a nod to the townhouse’s heritage was etched into the very essence of the space.

his endeavor epitomizes true design freedom, from acquisition to construction’s final flourish. A virgin hillside embraced by history—antique farmhouses, meadows, and a serene lake—birthed inspiration from the start. Architects, clients, and contractors then collaborated to complete a final product that embraced the bucolic landscape. United by a shared vision, a comprehensive masterplan took shape—new house, pool house gym, cabana, and outdoor spaces knitted together seamlessly. Nature guided choices, where natural materials were both introduced and reused from the existing site. Excavated rock found purpose in curvilinear retaining walls, lending an aged patina. Plantings, a blend of native and ornamental, transformed the terrain, supporting local flora and fauna. Porches, loggias, and greenspaces intertwined, framing seasonal changes through expansive windows. The pool area flourished, crowned by a panoramic cabana that perches at the threshold of a stunning lower lawn. But the pièce de résistance is the lake’s breathtaking vista. Precisely placed elements— seating, pathways, communal spaces—magnify its beauty.

omplicated by strict FEMA regulations, setbacks mandated a narrow building space, a hurdle that Devore Associates solved by working closely with the project’s architects. From there, Diane Devore and her team aimed to integrate the dwelling into the terrain, transforming its footprint into part of the expansive landscape. Grasses and water dominate the design, with a grass pathway leading to an entry court. Transitioning under crab apple trees and sedges, bluestone steps guide to the front door. A gate reveals an aquatic pool and garden, designed as a response to both interior living spaces and the tidal wetland. By the garage, a grassy incline leads to a family play lawn with raised vegetable plots. An aquatic garden—where birds visit, frogs thrive, and white water lilies enchant—merges water and flora into the tidal marsh. This establishes a north-south water axis, guiding to a lap pool framed by grasses.

his project resulted in a sustainable refuge for a multi-generational family to relish. The property features flourishing vegetable and flower gardens, an apple orchard, a revamped pool and spa, outdoor living zones, and a fully equipped kitchen. Across two acres in suburban Connecticut, the rectangular property slopes dramatically. Primary and secondary dwellings sit at opposite ends, while central gardens bridge family life. Sensitivity to pollinators (including the homeowners’ bees), birds, and wildlife guided organic practices, with an emphasis on water conservation. A grand vegetable and cutting garden, with a steel pergola, is a focal point for gatherings. Revitalizing uninspiring spaces, like the pool and patios, integrates architecture with easy movement. A grove of flowering star magnolia trees revives the front driveway while the new spa offers a vantage point for the water, gardens, and orchard. The dark quartzite pool and spa finishes mirror the sky while a retaining wall transforms the area into a lush garden room.

his project has great significance for Carta Creatives— being founder Elana Cline’s cherished family home. After acquiring a classic 1988 center hall Colonial, the firm’s focus was blending functionality with distinct character. Guided by the neighborhood, affectionately known as “Nursery Row,” they embraced cues from the adjacent Oliver Nurseries, renowned for their variety of exotic plants. A pool house creation by Cline’s husband fulfilled a desire for poolside gatherings, featuring a practical wet bar for easy hosting. The aim was an efficient, elegant structure, complemented by charming cascading planters. Challenges with the pool’s size and placement led to thoughtful strategic solutions. Sand-colored gravel was added to the back corner, harmonizing with the tucked-in pool house for an inviting backdrop. Majestic mature trees cocoon the backyard, ensuring unmatched privacy, and transform the space into an intimate oasis amidst lush greenery.

erched atop a commanding rock ledge, Glengate curated a backyard retreat with panoramic views of a secluded bay. This oasis boasts a negative-edge plunge pool, a serene spa, tiered terraces, and sweeping vistas. From the front door, your attention is drawn through the interior to the private beach and bay beyond. A 26-foot by 9-foot negative-edge pool, perpendicular to the home’s rear façade, harmonizes with the architecture. Stone retaining walls mirror the home’s exterior, topped with a glass railing, which allows for unobstructed water views. A granite staircase descends from the plunge pool and main terraces to the spa. Further descent leads to a lush lawn, winding between natural stone formations to the sandy beach, edged by a coastal arrangement of hydrangeas and sea grass. Balancing privacy with scenery was vital. A stilted sycamore hedge near the elevated pool offers a screen for the beach club, preserving a seamless view of the property’s organic shoreline.

BURR SALVATORE ARCHITECTS

B

urr Salvatore’s clients aimed to transform an unfinished attic into an inviting refuge, doubling as a home office space. Alongside dual workspaces, the blueprint encompassed a snug lounge area complete with a fireplace. The homeowners wanted to capture a contemporary style enhanced by steel accents and the welcoming warmth of natural stained wood. The challenge was to partition the area into distinct zones while preserving the grandeur of its elongated layout. Ingenuity materialized in a central axis running the attic’s length, marked by expansive steel doors and elegant transoms, all converging dramatically at the hearth. In her office, bookshelves trace the roof ’s natural incline, adorning white oak millwork. Navigating the placement of the existing windows and the pre-existing staircase— reconfigured to invite openness—presented another design dilemma. Relocating the stairs was not an option, so a solution was introduced: an open railing connecting the second floor and the attic, integrating the new space with the rest of the house.

A sleeper sofa by Avery Boardman, finished in Rogers & Goffigon fabric, elegantly assumes dual roles. The vintage desk, a timeless treasure from foley&cox HOME, sits atop a luxurious wool area rug by Stark. Lloyd Martin’s painting is a welcome addition, a vibrant burst of color and bold stripes that resonates with the geometry of the square-framed windows. designer dream closet is ready to be filled, thanks to the design that emerged from a collaborative partnership between interior designer Laura Michaels and Ornare Greenwich’s Mylene Del Nero. The two-story walk-in closet merges functionality with opulent grandeur. A striking light fixture cascades from the ceiling, complementing a catwalk-style second floor that gracefully hovers above. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, from the custom-made shoe wall to concealed storage, all tailored to the client’s lifestyle. The design also prioritized curated display spaces with semi-transparent mirrored doors, a look that Michaels hoped would feel like a high-end department store. Tactile materials—white lacquer, nude-tone leather, peach transparent mirrors, and brass accents—create an ethereal quality with their soft, elegant hues. Mirrors conjure space in a room with limited depth, as Ornare’s expertly crafted cabinetry and lighting interplay to cultivate openness.

lending history and innovation, this project aimed to deftly integrate a new multi-purpose sports barn with the original Cotswold-style main house from the 1930s. A transparent breezeway links the barn to the house, providing both practical sheltered access and visual distinction within the landscape. The core goal was to house a spacious basketball court that harmonized with the historic house. The barn’s design mimics a pre-existing barn from the same era, achieved by lowering the barn’s floor to align with the house’s scale. A highlight emerged with pocketing sliding glass doors, connecting the barn to the outdoors for various activities. Sound-absorbing wall panels were added to meet program requirements, enabling it to function easily for different gatherings. The barn’s timber frame adds both structural efficiency and a poetic sense of timelessness, unifying past and present.

The color palette is simultaneously vibrant and calming—a tapestry of green, turquoise, and gray—and sets the stage for a playroom that the whole family can enjoy. Applying interior design principals to educational playrooms is what Poole does best. She also knows the importance of physical play and focused on areas that promote fitness, motor skills, cognitive

development, problem-solving, and social growth. The result is a space where bonds are forged, communication skills honed, and laughter shared. The rock-climbing wall is the designer’s favorite feature. With its lively green hue, it adds visual intrigue and functionality for all ages and skill levels. astle in the Sky is a testament to sophistication and open living, born from the fusion of five apartments into a 4,800-square-foot family home. With bold wall coverings and custom furniture, the space underwent a complete renovation, embracing an open floor plan with a rich interplay of color and texture. Denise Davies’ vision, brought to life by D2 Interieurs, reimagined a once-dark living and dining area. Light oak hardwood floors replaced old flooring, and customdesigned D2 rugs defined spaces beautifully. Soft blues and pinks illuminated the living and dining rooms, while a custom credenza obscured vents and provided storage. HVAC units were concealed with strategically placed window seats, blending functionality and aesthetics, and creating new spots for East River viewing. The kitchen—enormous by NYC standards—features custom minimalist cabinetry and silver tone hardware and fixtures. Color pops from the teal bar stools and the island’s pendant lighting, on the roman shades, and from the Linda Colletta-commissioned art.

his project emerged from a desire to liberate a cherished wine collection, breathing life into an integrated speakeasy-style tasting room that successfully melded with the home’s aesthetic. From an unfinished basement, a 250-square-foot canvas marked by varying head heights, columns, and overlapping service lines, a challenge awaited. The answer to this spatial riddle gave birth to innovation: archways. These graceful arches went beyond functionality, becoming elegant dividers that delineated passages, storage zones, serving areas, and relaxation corners within the vaulted storage bar. Despite its modest footprint, the 300-bottle wine cellar masterfully merged functionality with an elevated aesthetic. It not only housed a wet bar complete with an icemaker but also featured plush velvet-covered loveseats adorned with practical blanket drawers. Tiled niches, enhanced with glass shelves and cove lights, became showcases for extra-large specialty bottles, decanters, and wine crates.

he transformation of this 1950s Cape Cod home was a labor of love; a gut renovation that honored its architectural history and was rebuilt for modern living for the Rosensteins’ growing family. The exterior received a timeless facelift, boasting a classic combination of cedar shingle roof, siding, and copper gutters. Inside, every 1950s relic was replaced, from oak hardwood floors to windows, doors, and millwork. Drawing inspiration from an English bed and breakfast, antique and modern elements are layered throughout, creating approachable spaces for family living. A sunroom with vaulted ceilings became a cozy family retreat, walls were removed to merge the kitchen and living room, and French doors opened to a revamped patio for seamless indoor-outdoor living. Challenges included adapting the home’s footprint and adjusting ceiling heights, particularly vital for the designer’s tall husband. Every inch received meticulous attention, and every paint color, every piece of furniture, every vintage print tells a chapter from Rosenstein’s own story.

or his latest restaurant project, Christian P. Arkay-Leliever embarked on a journey through Mediterranean culture and cuisine. An immersion in the client’s well-established NYC kitchens paved the way for the ambitious project: crafting a 6,000-square-foot restaurant in Fairfield that would become Esh. Arkay-Leliever’s team tackled spatial analysis, kitchen design, lighting concepts, interior architecture, and brand development. At its core, esh, meaning “charred” in Hebrew, guided the group. They

delved into culinary artistry, from the “taboon” stone oven to the craft of hummus-making. Japanese charred wood, Shou-sugi-ban, became the interior’s focal point. Inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, they chose finishes, furniture, and accessories, echoing the sea, mountains, shores, and vegetation. A sixty-foot mural of an octopus in the deep sea envelops the dining room, bar, and restroom walls, while a lush indoor landscape of birch trees amid real stone and carefully crafted lighting blurs the line between inside and outside.

JOSH GREENE

What design trends are you looking forward to seeing in the coming year? Gemstones are being used more and more in interiors and in unique ways—everything from surfaces on furnishings (DeMuro Das) to accessories and decorative hardware (YH x Modern Matter.) It’s a playful and elevated way to incorporate materials that we may not see all the time.

What design trends are you looking forward to seeing in the coming year? I’d love to see more geometric patterned wallpaper in unusual color combinations!

Which trends are you hoping to leave behind? I’m happy with the shift away from the overuse of bouclé! That being said, when used in the right amount it can be a wonderful, textural moment.

What design trends are you looking forward to seeing in the coming year? The resurgence of antique furniture in interiors—less new furniture and more one-of-a-kind pieces.

MELISSA REAVIS What design trends are you looking forward to seeing in the coming year? We’ve seen a huge shift in landscape design towards the use of native plants and I’m looking forward to continuing that. Pushing for building materials that are sourced locally will help reinforce the sense of place for that garden and create a unique outdoor experience that would be difficult to replicate anywhere else.

Which trends are you hoping to leave behind? All beige for everything, and so many projects that look the same as the next!

DOUGLAS WRIGHT

Which trends are you hoping to leave behind? I’m looking forward to seeing less monoculture planting in our landscapes. A massive border of one plant looks great in a photograph but is terribly boring most of the year.

What design trends are you looking forward to seeing in the coming year? I’m hoping for an increase in the use of the dreaded “brown furniture”! We’ve done so many modern projects, with a few fascinating, antique pieces creeping in lately. I look forward to seeing many more, as I know, that will be the case! We’ve also started doing much smaller, more focused, houses, and I look forward to seeing that trend increase in the coming year.

PHILIP GORRIVAN What design trends are you looking forward to seeing in the coming year? I’d love to see more color and pattern, luxury and layers in design. I am still waiting for the roaring ‘20s of our century. It’s almost here!

Which trends are you hoping to leave behind? I’d be very happy to move on from yet another regional perspective on midcentury modern.

Which trends are you hoping to leave behind? Kitchen islands as big as a pickleball courts made of aggressively veined fake marble.

Which trends are you hoping to leave behind? I’d love to say goodbye to accent walls, low quality furnishings at high prices, and knockoffs!
