t the start of a new year, it’s exciting to imagine what the year will bring. This is, without question, when we are asked to take stock of what we are doing with our lives and evaluate our goals, adjust to meet new targets, and set our priorities for the year. We offer ourselves a challenge to be met, and, ideally, we also see it as an opportunity to become who we truly want to be. Change is an invitation to evolve. Hopefully, you’ve already noticed that we started with ourselves: We redesigned Fairfield Living magazine, front to back. You’ll see a whole new layout, new fonts, and new use of photography and typography. This is more than a freshening up; this was a long and thoughtful process that reinvigorates your hometown magazine. We hope it entices you to linger a little longer on each page and to save your favorite issues. The redesigned issue is part of a larger renewal at Moffly Media. We’re pushing forward across the board, with a redesigned website and reimagining our signature events. For example, our annual readers’ poll— called Best of the Gold Coast Connecticut— is coming to you sooner this year. Look for it in our May/June issue, which will allow us to celebrate Best Of at the start of summer JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2019 FAIRFIELD LIVING

and throw the Best Of party at the peak of the season. We’re thinking ahead and doing everything we can to make sure you love our renewed feature and our up-a-notch event. SWEETHEART V alentine’s Day calls to mind a bouquet of roses, a heartfelt card, a romantic dinner, and, of course, the essential box of chocolate. It’s a heartwarming, tummyloving gift, and no one knows that better than Fairfielder Benoit Racquet, master chocolatier, global chocolate connoisseur and founder of BE Chocolat (bechocolat.com). His premium sweets are available online and at multiple stores in town. He recently sat down with Fairfield Living magazine to discuss the creative process behind his Valentine’s Day collection and how he stays involved with the community. “For Valentine’s I wanted to contrast bubbles and heat. A box
of two or four chocolates was obvious, and we have these lovely heart molds from Belgium, but I wanted to do more than just one milk and one dark chocolate.” So, Benoit came up with the bright red heart mold to contrast the two rich brown hearts. “It results in this shiny, deep-red effect that immediately evokes love.” For the ganache inside, he infuses it with the luxurious Veuve Clicquot, because, for him, “Valentine’s is about Champagne.” He then adds a touch of dehydrated organic raspberry to ensure a fruity, elegant finish. “The result is a soft velvety unsweetened pink ganache, under a shiny red armor.” For the dark chocolate heart, Benoit wanted to capture heat, fire and warmth. Using a small
ROMANCING YOUR VALENTINE WITH BE CHOCOLAT amount of cayenne red pepper in the ganache brings out the dark chocolate’s bittersweet notes and heightens the purity of the dark chocolate. “Tasting the pair of red and dark hearts evokes that visual image of a perfect Valentine’s moment made of refreshing Champagne by the fire on a romantic February evening.” He completes the gesture by flipping the box inside out, revealing a secret space for a love note. The inside is finished with red varnish; the outside with white paper. Whether you’re writing a Shakespeare-worthy sonnet or something short and sweet, your true love will appreciate the TLC (tender loving chocolate). —Joey Macari

The nearly thirty-acre facility has a variety of recreational activities, fitness classes and sports teams for all ages. It also has art classes, special events, birthday parties and more. The center, located on Mill Plain Road, is an inspired athlete’s haven for those who like to lunge, punch, pedal, jump and stretch their way into a workout regimen that works for them. When it comes to Club Pilates owners Kevin and Jennifer Fay, take the term “power couple” literally. The two switched careers to live out their passion for fitness and launched their new studio at the Sportsplex. The classes offers a fullbody, low-impact core workout that utilizes the yogi values of balance and flexibility, but ups them up a notch. The studio has varying levels of difficulty. New members start out in a foundations course and work their way up to a high-intensity master course. Kerry and Rob Manning and their business partners Joe and Sarah Oppedisano gave their new Sportsplex studio a major makeover—and their spin workout, motivating coaches and upbeat vibe are meant to keep you working out for the long haul. Riders are encouraged to “get in the best shape of their life” with a number of sessions meant to boost mood and improve cardio endurance.
Brothers Paul and Brian Herman— who have toured with the likes of Alicia Keys, Chris Brown and Kat DeLuna—brought their passion for dance to the Sportsplex. Last January a fire damaged their last studio, but they kept going and inspired their members to reach their goals, too. The studio offers a variety of hip hop (their specialty) as well as special classes, such the allinclusive Femology, which encourages women of all shapes and sizes to dance, and Cardio Blast to burn calories and have a great time doing it.

he Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University hosted feminist trailblazer and legendary actress Jane Fonda in its event “Open VISIONS—Speaking Out: Artist as Social Activist.” The sociopolitical actress— famous for her Oscar-winning performances in Klute and Coming Home as well as her current series Grace and Frankie—was celebrated for her activism spanning decades. This includes cofounding, with Gloria Steinem and Robin Morgan, Women’s Media Center and her own organization, Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health at Emory University School of Medicine. The Quick Center hosted a panel discussion with Fonda at the Artisan at Delamar Southport, which was followed by a private dinner reception with the actress. roadcast journalist Tamron Hall was this year’s keynote speaker at the Center for Family Justice (CFJ) “Speaking of Women” event. The luncheon, held at The Waterview in Monroe, highlighted services and programs provided by CFJ and honored victims of domestic violence in Connecticut. Kristin Okesson was recognized for her service to CFJ through her initiatives with radio station Star 99.9; and Lori Bennett, an abuse survivor who served in the U.S. Air Force, shared her story of eventual triumph. The annual fundraiser once again drew a packed house of nearly 400 people. Proceeds benefit crisis hotlines and CFJ services.
illiam Raveis Real Estate hosted its fourth annual Ride and Walk event to support the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. Hundreds of walkers, bikers and runners participated in the 5k walk/run, 25- and 50-mile rides, and the children’s 100-yard dash at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Families also enjoyed face painting, pumpkin decorating, food trucks and a live concert from The Wailers, the legendary Jamaican reggae band formed by Bob Marley. The event raised nearly $300,000 and 100 percent of the proceeds was donated to fund cancer research. »

he 12th Annual Golf Tournament to benefit Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo saw seventy-four golfers at the prestigious Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. That day, guests paired up in teams of four to compete for prizes and were treated with dinner afterwards. Bridgeport’s Beardsley Zoo, Connecticut’s premiere park featuring over 300 exotic species, recently debuted two new Amur tiger cubs named Reka and Zeya, and a baby giant anteater. Funds raised at this event will go towards programs and exhibitions at the zoo. F

ake sure you ease into any kind of new fitness routine,” says SUZANNE PALAZZO, owner and director of Upper Deck Fitness in Stamford and Westport. Set realistic goals. Otherwise you’re likely to feel defeated. “At Upper Deck, our philosophy is prescribed fitness and variety of workouts,” she explains, noting the classes are color coded by intensity, so you can balance your regimen and not overdo it. “People tend to gravitate towards workouts they enjoy and do them repeatedly, but over time [that can lead to] issues with repetitive use and joints and muscles suffering from too much wear and tear.” The body then becomes imbalanced, which can lead to injury. “People usually only go to low-impact or recovery workouts once they’ve been hurt, but mobility work is [also] critical to injury prevention,” she says. Here’s Palazzo’s fitness prescription for the new year:

ALTERNATE HIGH WITH LOW High-intensity workouts are popular, but they can cause inflammation in joints and muscles when you’re not properly balanced. The rigor of this type of exercise is encouraged only if you give your body proper time to recover. It’s best to alternate days of high- and low-impact exercise and devote only two to three days a week to high intensity workouts.
TAKE A BREAK “One of the ways we get stronger is that exercise creates micro tears in our muscles,”
explains Palazzo. If we allow these to heal properly, the muscle becomes stronger, but if you overdo it, swelling and joint pain may occur. Giving yourself a “down day” of barre, Pilates, walking, swimming or another recovery exercise in between high impact classes allows muscles adequate time to heal.
REST PURPOSEFULLY Don’t take two days off in a row, advises Palazzo, because the off-day best serves its purpose when sandwiched in between other workouts. “Realize that less can be more,

She recommends starting 2019 with the healthy habit of dry brushing several times a week. Before getting into a hot shower, use a dry brush like Voya’s Cactus-Bristle Exfoliating Body Brush and brush upwards in a circular motion from the feet to the heart. This will improve circulation, she says, get rid of dead skin cells and prime skin for moisturizing. The new year is a great time, though, to rid your routine of products that contain harmful ingredients and try an eco-based alternative. “Green products, especially makeup and skincare, are really high quality and perform beautifully, says RHONDA SHERWOOD, whose new natural beauty store Sherwood Green Life opened recently in Greenwich. The beauty products in her store are plant-based, free of petroleum-based ingredients and nourishing to your skin. “We’re like scientific detectives, constantly researching product ingredients to make sure they aren’t harsh, allergenic or harmful to people, especially pregnant moms and their unborn babies,” she says. Sherwood recommends these swaps to achieve the most noticeable positive effects.
CHOOSE ORGANIC Choose a shampoo with plant-based ingredients. Conventional shampoos contain phthalates (a hormone disruptor that can also cause allergic reactions and headaches) and sulfates like sodium laureth sulfate/SLS, which are harsh and irritating. Some of Sherwood’s favorites are Rahua Classic or Rahua Voluminous Shampoo, and Rahua Classic Conditioner, which contain rahua oil.
DITCH THE DEODORANT “Your lymph nodes are next to your armpits, so this is one of the most important clean product swaps you can make,” says Sherwood, who notes it may take time to find the right one for you. FEED YOUR GUT “The future of medicine is in gut health, so it’s important to know that your gut microbiome—the flora in your digestive system—is filled with bacteria that can either keep you healthy or make you sick,” explains nutritionist Abby Greenspun of Westport. “The health of your digestive system is also responsible for brain health and your immune system, so in the new year—any time of year— focus on feeding the good gut bacteria with a diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds,” she says. While you can take a probiotic, “real food is always better.” Here are her must-dos for the year ahead:

Good bacteria feeds on fiber so make nuts, seeds, fruits, veggies and whole grains part of your daily diet.

ATTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT “A moderate weight is ideal for pregnancy,” Dr. Hurwitz says. Being underweight means the baby may not get enough nutrients, and being overweight can hamper fertility and increase the chance of miscarriage and gestational diabetes. Aim for a body mass index of 19 to 26.
TAKE PRENATAL VITAMINS Folic acid, which can prevent birth defects, is most important before conception. Whether
over-the-counter or prescription, vitamins should include iron, Vitamin D, calcium and folic acid.

Education, outreach and direction are critical for men to understand and address health risks.

o help keep the children healthy, “make sure they get enough sleep, get their flu shot and wash their hands repeatedly, especially in winter,” says DR. JAY D’ORSO, an internal medicine specialist with Ridgefield Primary Care, a family practice. According to Dr. D’Orso, all children should eat three healthy meals a day with fruit and vegetables, be active every day, and follow a doctor’s recommended well-child visit schedule to ensure they’re current with immunizations, on track for growth and development, and having regular psycho-social and safety counseling. Optimizing a child’s sleep and stress management is also key to good health. Here’s why.
QUALITY OF SLEEP STRESS MANAGEMENT According to the CDC, 58 percent of middle school kids, and 73 percent of high school students, aren’t getting enough sleep. Regular sleep deprivation can lead to irritability, difficulty concentrating, high blood pressure, obesity, headaches and depression. To ensure quality slumber, do the following:

ADOPT HEALTHY HABITS If you’re on medication for a condition, use it in conjunction with healthy habits. For patients with high blood pressure, for

CUT BACK ON ALCOHOL It puts you at a higher risk for developing liver problems such as cirrhosis and liver failure; and because alcohol is a toxin to

DIET Staying at a moderate weight can reduce the risk of endometrial, breast and pancreatic cancers. Reduce intake of processed foods and red meat (red meat has been linked to colon cancer). Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and

TOBACCO Tobacco exposure is related to one in five deaths in the U.S. Oral, esophageal and bladder cancers have all been linked to smoking. Vaping smoke contains chemicals, including known carcinogens.
ALCOHOL It has been shown to increase your risk of breast, throat, esophageal and liver cancers.
SCREENINGS It is crucial to maintain a regular schedule of Pap smears, pelvic exams, mammograms and colonoscopies. Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in the U.S. Because of a recent uptrend in patients younger than fifty-five who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer,
the American Cancer Society now recommends colonoscopies starting at age forty-five.
HPV AND ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES Since some HPV viruses can cause cervical cancer and genital warts, Gardasil 9, the HPV vaccine, was recently approved for men and women up to age forty-five (up from prior recommendations of ages nine to twentysix). Ovarian cancer often presents without symptoms but women who have taken oral contraceptive pills have at least a 30 percent lower risk of developing ovarian cancer, with the protective effects extending past the time they were on the pill. Each boasts its own unique flare and attracts its own loyal clientele, which includes owners of nearby shops. For these businesswomen who are boosting the local economy, the door is always open—for shopping, business advice, emotional support and sharing a few good laughs. They have an equal passion for creativity, for Fairfield and for the rewards of entrepreneurship. Support is both big and small—but,

most important, consistent. For example, Fresh Flower Bar delivers bouquets to the shop No. 299 every week and kindred spirits, Saltwater and Swim N’ Surf, take each other’s coffee orders. They also agree on the small-business boom in town. “I think that in the past few years the downtown scene in Fairfield has gone from zero to sixty,” says Jackie Fucigna, who has owned store No. 299 on Unquowa Road since 2014. “It’s on fire! I like to think that all of the female-run boutiques have something to do with that. I feel incredibly proud to be a part of the female-led movement.”

a New York staple to town: Art Walk. From last June to September, it ran in conjunction with the Town of Fairfield Office of Community and Economic Development and with the support of artists and local restaurants. “I felt very strongly that the Art Walk would bring not only art lovers to town, but also potential customers for all of our mutual female-owned businesses. It very much did!” Some owners note an upsurge in local shopping, which they believe is because of, in part, the addition of women-owned stores. “There is such a wonderful rejuvenation going on in downtown Fairfield right now. It has become a true shopping destination in Fairfield County, which is due to the resurgence of the small, local businesses, many of these being started by women,” says Jessica Sokol, co-owner, with Sarah McBrair, of Saltwater, a mommy-and-me boutique that opened in 2017. “Traditionally, women have been pitted against one another in business, but the current climate in downtown Fairfield is completely the opposite. We’ve realized that when one of us does well, it supports the economic environment of the town as a whole and gives us all a boost. Fairfield becomes more of a shopping destination, so people start to shop locally rather than constantly resorting to the ease of online shopping. The women business owners have caught onto this and have truly adopted the community-over-competition morale.” Vanessa Lewis of the newly opened Penfield Collective, also on the Post Road, agrees. “We build up the other

The secret to their success is that they lift up one another. They believe that as one store does well, so do the others—and they’re being proactive about fostering it. Recently, a group of women owners got together to come up with ways to boost local shopping. “It’s always helpful to brainstorm and share ideas with other female shop owners,” says Jackie. Chris O’Shea, owner of Driftwood Farmhouse, agrees. “As a woman business owner, I feel especially motivated to support other women-owned businesses, both in my community and the vendors that I buy from. When gifts have a story, such as being made by a women’s collective that helps employ women from around the world, it makes us so much more excited to support them. We buy many of these products, and we try to create a global community of women-owned businesses right within our doors.” She opened her store on the Post Road this past summer, after fifteen years of running her own business online. “I have always committed myself to employing other women, teaching them about the business and acting as a mentor for them to go on and start their own dreams.” Having moved from the hip neighborhood of Chelsea to Fairfield, Chris’s first passion project involved bringing

Mary founded Party Party, a stationery and gift store, on Sanford Street in 2010 and adds that part of the new wave of success is because owners live locally. “So many towns are full of chain stores, but Fairfield is unique in that there are so many of us who are residents as well as shop owners,” she says. “Retail brings retail.” Party Party’s move freed up a location downtown for Carrie Bocian to open her shoe shop, ideally called The Perfect Pair. Being the new kid on the block, she says, “Opening a shoe boutique has always been a dream of mine. There’s such a wonderful community of strong savvy businesswomen downtown. It’s an honor to be a part of this transformation.”

The store owners find a niche, provide mutual support, live locally—and, of course, work hard.

In Fairfield’s game of musical chairs, everyone gets a seat. Vanessa Lewis moved Penfield Collective into the space vacated by her friend Sandra Halstead. Sandra’s shop, Beehive—which offers gifts, jewelry, clothing and all things for home, baby and stylish living—is both established and new. It opened in 2013, and this year relocated and reopened in a larger space. Beehive now has an expanded shopping selection as well as a new design-services studio. Sandra also brought on board business partner Lesley Collins, who shares her love for Fairfield and her entrepreneurial spirit. “There’s so much female-led empowerment and support in our community, and we are all about that,” says Sandra. “We both would love to get to a place in our society where we don’t necessarily feel the need to define and differentiate between female- and maleowned businesses. We like to say, there’s no such thing as a ‘girl boss.’ We’re just bosses, and we want our next generation to know there isn’t a difference.” Sandra opened up space in Beehive to Mary Thornton. It was a win-win. Both share a similar style and have

“We put in the hours to try to make our stores unique and special,” remarks Kathryn Kirton of Swim ’N Surf, which has been a popular cornerstone in the swimwear business of Fairfield since opening in 2005. “Hearing our customers come in and say, ‘We love your store’ or ‘We try to always shop locally’ really warms our heart. It is very easy to shop online or shop chain stores, but shopping in our stores really does support the community—and, as a whole, it keeps downtown alive.” Sarah O’Brien at Fresh Flower Bar concludes by saying, “We constantly strive to achieve a healthy balance between our business and our personal lives. We are wives, mothers, sisters and daughters with tremendous demands on our time. We live half our life dedicated to running a successful business, and the other half being with family and raising our children. We are multifaceted people, with many roles to play. We are passionate about achieving our goals across all aspects of our life. Personally, I want to demonstrate to my children how important it is to follow your dreams.
