big sections are Food + Drink, Shop + Style, and Services + To Do’s. Everything from burritos to barre classes are inside. Also, we maintain focus on the winners who took Best of the Gold Coast—those who received the most votes across Fairfield County. But what about places just in Fairfield? That’s here, too. You’ll find them in a distinct section, “Best of Fairfield.” The places that garnered the most votes in town are gathered in this section—it’s just like Best of the Gold Coast, yet only five minutes from home. If you love the read (agreeing or even disagreeing with who won what), make sure your summer planning includes our Best Of celebration. Just like the feature, this year we kicked it up a notch, giving you even more of a taste of the best of food, shopping and services from local businesses. onsider this May/June issue your countdown to summer. I love this time of year for two very obvious reasons: I’m out and about more, and I get to share who won Best of the Gold Coast Connecticut with you. Each year, Fairfield Living readers, as they have for the past fifteen years, vote on which restaurants and eateries, hot shops and spas, fitness centers and activities for busy families are their favorites. Which places make living here the best? This time around, we raised the bar for ourselves— we challenged our creative team to make this year’s “Best Of ” our best one ever. To start, we decided not to wait for our July/ August issue to reveal who topped the lists. Instead, we are presenting the top vote-getters two months earlier—right now. That means on a warm, sunny day, you can get out and try something new and still have plenty of time to make plans for the rest of the season. We also wanted to make it very easy to read the results of our reader poll, so we revamped how the winners are listed. You’ll see an entirely redesigned layout. This comprehensive guide is packed with more than 185 categories, and our new approach breaks it down into a format that is cleaner and easier to use than ever before. The three

CEO CAROLYN MILES ON SAVE THE CHILDREN TURNING 100 by diane sembrot

S
ave the Children was founded in 1919—that’s a century of putting children in the United States and around the world first. Wherever and whenever young people face poverty, violence, abandonment, natural disasters and other major crises, this nonprofit is quick to help. It reports that each day, 16,000 children die, mostly from preventable causes, before their fifth birthday; one in six children worldwide is not in school; and one in eighty must flee conflict. Fairfield Living was fortunate enough to interview CEO CAROLYN MILES about the nonprofit, which is based in Fairfield.
ZNARA AHMAD/SAVE THE CHILDREN
Why did you take this position? The “aha” moment for me came on a trip with my family to the Philippines, when I saw kids living in extreme poverty—kids who would never have the same opportunities as my children would. That’s when I decided that I must be able to use some of the skills I’d picked up along the way to do good in the world. When I first got to Save the Children, it felt like everything I had done up until that point had prepared me for this next stage in my career. It was frankly a mix of luck and a good fit with my business experience
and protection from harm. In 2017 we reached over 155 million children in 120 countries, including the United States. The most critical time for survival is the first five years, so we focus on children getting to the age of five. In 1990, over 12 million children died before age five. In 2017, it was a little over 5 million. In more than 25 years the number has been cut in half—and that’s huge progress. In education, we’re focused on primary or elementary school for children, and getting them through the fifth or sixth grade. For many kids that we work with in the developing world, that is as far as they ever get in school. We want to make sure they can read, write and have basic math skills. The third piece is protection for the children, and that is where our emergency-response work comes in. The biggest need for protection is during times of natural disasters or conflicts. Conflict is a particularly challenging area that we work in. Many of the countries we are working in now are in the midst of active conflict and
that gave me my first job at Save the Children in 1998. I became president and CEO in 2011 after having been the COO for seven years. I was the first female president of Save the Children U.S. I found my ultimate dream job in this role. When does Save the Children get involved? Save the Children invests in childhood every day, in times of crisis and for our future. We give children in the United States and around the world a healthy start, the opportunity to learn

in those, kids are abused, trafficked, and separated from their parents. What’s a recent challenge? Since 2000 the number of children under five dying from preventable causes—like pneumonia, malaria and tuberculosis—has been cut in half. But that means that the children who are still dying are the hardest to reach. They may be living in incredibly remote areas or in urban slums with little infrastructure, or they may be excluded because of their gender or their ethnic background or because they live in extreme poverty. Save the Children has pledged to reach every last child— and the tools and approaches we need to use to reach marginalized children are different than those we can use to reach the kids in our existing programs. We need to use technology, innovative new programs and new ways of financing our work. Fairfield can feel like it doesn’t need emergency care for children— but does it?

During emergencies, we know that all children are particularly vulnerable. The needs of children during times of crisis are no different, whether the child is from Connecticut or Kenya. We have been on the ground, supporting the needs of children right here in our own backyard on more than one occasion. Following the tragedy at Sandy Hook and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, our teams responded to the needs of children in Newtown and in the Rockaways. In both events, we provided Child Friendly Spaces, one of Save the Children’s most well-known activities to protect children during the first phase of an emergency or in areas of long-term crisis. A Child Friendly Space gives kids a safe space with trained professionals and the opportunity to play, sing and socialize

with their peers—to be a kid and to regain a sense of normalcy in difficult times. Is Save the Children apolitical, and how is it funded? At Save the Children, we don’t choose sides. We choose children. Save the Children is an independent organization. We have no affiliation to any political party or religion. Save the Children is funded by a variety of sources. Nearly half of our funding comes from the U.S. government—for example, through the U.S. Agency for International Development. The rest is made up of U.N. and other institutions, then corporate and foundation giving. Nearly 20 percent of our funds come from individual donors who are passionate about our mission. From kids bringing us pennies after an emergency to large donors, we are grateful to the tens of thousands of Americans who support us.
M
om may say she has everything she needs, but there is one wonderful way to surprise her: update the design of one of her jewelry pieces or custom-design a new one for her. “For Mother’s Day, in particular, a custom piece lends greater meaning, whether it’s a gift from son or daughter to mother, jewelry gifted from husband to wife, or even something you design for yourself,” says Fairfielder Greg French, president of HENRY C. REID & SON (hcreidjewelers.com), which has been providing jewelry and giftware since 1910. Crafted in the store’s workshop, the piece you dreamed of becomes real. “We work very closely with each of our clients to create an entirely original piece of jewelry to make sure he or she gets exactly what they envisioned.” fairfieldlivingmag.com

“Dreamt up in seaside New England and brought to life in Brooklyn, New York, PEARL STREET SWIM is a timeless, coastal-inspired children’s swimwear label capturing the imaginative and playful spirit of our little ones,” says Sophie Sikaitis, founder of the new children’s line making waves across Fairfield. The first summer after Sophie had her first baby, Penelope, she was discouraged by the “lack of beautiful, simple and childfriendly swimsuits on the market for her baby girl.” In response to the “character-decorated, neon-colored, not-enough-coverage options,” she took matters into her own hands and created pieces in both solid and illustrated prints that are not only SPF 50 and chlorine resistant, but also made with active, breathable fabric that is perfect for on-the-go kids. After the launch of the line in March last year, and following the birth of her second baby, Everly, Sophie and her husband, Jeffrey, relocated to Fairfield. Being just a stone’s throw away from Penfield Beach and surrounded by the nautical vibe of the town further transformed her swim line with coastal-cute style. The family has settled right in. “In search of an intentional and creative life by the sea, a place to grow my family and the business, I have been overwhelmed by how supportive the Fairfield community is,” she says. POWERFUL COMBINATION
C300 BLENDS MERCEDES MUSCULARITY WITH A LIVELY GRACE by chris hodenfield

or those who associate Mercedes-Benz with massive, bank-vault solidity, the C300 sedan will come as a cheery surprise. It feels light and sporty, a real endearing pal, not so much a sirloin-and-scotch bruiser but more of a gym-and-apower-shake athlete. Right away, it promises spirited times. There are heavily horsepowered versions of the C sedan available, but our tester hit the sweet spot for these Connecticut roads. The 255-horsepower turbo 4 gave it plenty of zoom. The amazing
snowplows, the C300 has a very strong and handsome shape. Another part of the package is the refined, curvaceous interior. Adults, by the way, will find the rear seats acceptable. The dash controls require a bit of learning; but, after all, it is a German car (even if it is assembled in Alabama). The “4matic” designation translates all-wheel-drive and the mechanics were, again, unnoticeable save for the catlike grace the car has on a winding road. If the drivetrain makes the
nine-speed transmission was utterly unobtrusive putting the car immediately into power mode or quiet, gas-sipping overdrive. The package worked well. And getting gas mileage in the high 20s was quite welcoming. Who needs the 503-horsepower blunderbuss C63? The $2,000 AMG option on our C300 added performance goodies like updated sport suspension and steering but also a number of aesthetic treats like the beautiful diamond-block grille. Indeed, while so many sedans today have front ends like swoopy

car slightly heavier, you simply don’t feel it in the C300. And in winter, the 4matic option is a critical help. Our test period coincided with a lot of ice and snow, and the car went at it like a bluebird takes to the sky.

he Fairfield University Art Museum recently held an opening reception for the launch of the exhibition “Ghosts: French Holocaust Children” in the Walsh Gallery at Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibition, co-sponsored by the university’s Humanities Institute, commemorates the loss of the Jewish children who were taken from France and sent to Nazi death camps. Of the 11,000 French-Jewish children taken in the Shoah, only about 300 survived. The gallery, created by the Robert Hirsch project, features photographs collected by author, lawyer and famed Nazi-hunter Serge Klarsfeld in scaled-down boxcars, like the ones used to carry Jews to the camps, with muralsized portraits in them to emphasize the total loss and tragedy of the genocide. At the reception, Dr. Patricia Behre, associate professor in the Department of History, offered historical context before the public viewing. The exhibition also runs in conjunction with a lecture by Hirsch, sponsored by the Bennett Center for Judaic Studies. »

hepherds, a mentoring and scholarship nonprofit based in Bridgeport, held its annual gala at The Inn at Longshore to celebrate twenty years of fostering academic excellence in underprivileged teens. The nonprofit, which aims at prepping inner-city students around New Haven and Bridgeport for college, invited Byron Pitts—award-winning journalist and co-anchor of ABC News’ Nightline—to speak at the event. In his address, Pitts discussed growing up in Baltimore and the affect his family and adult mentors had on his educational and career success. More than 200 guests attended the record-setting fundraiser, with Executive Director Dan McAuliffe of Shepherds stepping in as emcee when NBC weatherman Dave Price was unable to attend due to Hurricane Michael. Thanks to this year’s fundraiser, more than fifteen young students will have the opportunity to receive a four-year private high school education with the prospect of fulfilling their college dreams afterwards.

Comedian Nate Bargatze, whose sketches have appeared on Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Netflix’s The Standups, brought the laughs to a packed crowd. A cocktail reception was held under a large tent with light bites for guests, who also heard stories of triumph from Homes with Hope clients that evening. This year’s fundraiser brought in 15 percent of the annual budget for programs like food pantries, after-school programs and housing development initiatives for clients dealing with mental illness, struggling families and displaced individuals battling chronic homelessness. GOLDEN ADVICE
Peter Chang, winner of best Chinese cuisine, picks Szechuan dishes to sample now.
1
THE REAL DEAL For authentic fare, start with spicy lamb buns or the milder Furong chicken hot pot. Follow with shredded pork with bean curd and bamboo shoots, a traditional milder dish.
2
FIRST TIME? NO PROBLEM Try the Bamboo Style Fish, lightly breaded flounder seasoned with cumin and Szechuan spices. Vegetarians should try the Mapo Tofu, a traditional spicy dish that pairs well with rice.

WINNER OF NEW RESTAURANT
T
avern food gets a boastful upgrade at Brick Walk Tavern. This new restaurant offers all of the necessary hospitality of a classic tavern and serves as a hub of the community (it’s a prime spot for meet-ups, family dinners, first dates and business meetings), but its food is beyond standard tavern fare. Consider the Maine lobster, shrimp and bay scallops with English peas, potatoes, leeks and tomatoes in a puff-pastry shell. MAY/JUNE 2019 FAIRFIELD LIVING

You can’t go wrong with prawns with vermicelli, three pepper chicken or cumin lamb chop. For those feeling brave, the beef with vermicelli hot pot features flank steak served with bok choy in a steaming, spicy broth.

MANFREDI JEWELS WINNER OF BEST MEN’S AND WOMEN’S WATCHES
T
ime is always on your side when you step inside Manfredi. So, who better to ask about the latest watch trends than longtime manager Robert Weintraub? “For ladies’ watches, Hermès is one of the most in demand. Many would be surprised that Hermès has a rich history of watchmaking dating back over eighty years. Their timeless classic designs can go from the office to an evening out. The Cape Cod is one of their iconic watches and has many variations and strap options,â€? says Weintraub. And for the guys? “In the under $5,000 range, the new Seamaster 300m, which was updated about a year ago, is the perfect all-around steel sport watch. It comes in three different dial colors on a bracelet or rubber strap.â€? For those who want to make an even bigger statement, Weintraub recommends the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic. “It has become one of the most sought after men’s watches, especially the blue dial version. It comes with a bracelet, rubber strap and alligator strap as well as an interchangeable folding buckle, and it features a unique quick-release mechanism that allows you to change between them without the use of tools.â€?

CAPTAIN JOHN’S TIKI TOURS
TANGLED VINE
GLENGATE
Ahoy! Grab up to five of your closest friends, BYOB and take a scenic ride along Harbor Point on a Polynesian-style floating lounge. Why take life so seriously when there’s so much fun to be had? We suggest booking on Tiki Tuesdays, when a thirty-minute tour is only $25 per person, with a complimentary lei and cooler and ice for your favorite drinks. Whenever you go this summer, you can trust Capt. John to show you the best local sights as your favorite tunes play and you let stress float away. captjohnstikitours.com
Summer was made for good friends, good times and good music. Get it all when you head out to see Tangled Vine. The band rocks Hawaii, Miami, San Francisco, Aruba, Boston, NYC and, lucky us, Fairfield County. They even find time to give back. They’ll be at The Pilot House Family Fun Day Fundraiser on May 4. They have also played for Make-A-Wish, Kids in Crisis, MasterCard, Bridgewater, Pfizer, PGA World Championship, Graham Capital Management and others. Do good or just a good time, let’s dance. tangledvine.com
Some of the best summer memories are made at home, gathered with friends and family for a pool party or dinner under the stars. If it’s time for a new or an upgraded pool, garden, outdoor kitchen or other essential, Glengate is on it. This outdoor-lifestyle company understands family time: Four generations have grown the business from a pool company into a firm for pool design and construction, landscape architecture, garden design and maintenance, and all-thingsoutdoors–so you have fun. glengatecompany.com
