PROMOTION contemporary styles. What never changes are the timeless attributes of the finest jewelry and watches. Perhaps the biggest change to occur in all shopping, including luxury jewelry, is the rapid rise of ecommerce over the past two years. The new generation of Walkers steering the future of Shreve, Crump & Low understands the complementary nature of in-store and online today. “Any good company knows you need both channels as part of your strategy,” says Brian Walker, who has taken the lead on ecommerce efforts. bring down the house at the Greenwich Town Party on Saturday, May 28. Writer Jamie Marshall takes a look at plans for the event and reminisces about GTPs past. Although some years Mother Nature tried her best to dampen our spirits, she failed miserably. (No worries. We were happy to sacrifice our white jeans to the mud.) And this year, well, nothing’s going to rain on this parade. See what’s in store in “Greenwich State of Mind,” page 27. To borrow a phrase from Ron Popeil: “But wait, there’s more.” (If you know, you know.) Every May our editors and writers get together to create our special Good Life section (page 82). It’s a compilation of great finds for dining, designing, shopping and enjoying life up and down the Gold Coast. We hope you enjoy using this guide as much as we did creating it. There’s a lot on the horizon this spring, and we can’t wait to get out and enjoy it all. [Editor cues Hamilton reference.] “It’s only a matter of time.” WILLIAM TAUFIC

To say the show became a musical sensation is an understatement. It’s a celebration of diversity, it’s provocative, it’s innovative. It is a phenomenon. Of course, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda was no stranger to the spotlight prior to the show’s stratospheric rise. His In the Heights garnered thirteen Tony nominations and four wins, including the coveted Best Musical. But I’ll let writer Riann Smith fill you in on all things Miranda. Riann talked to the Changemaker honoree of this year’s Greenwich International Film Festival about his storied career, his plans for the future, as well as his commitment to philanthropy and equity. The man is far more than a creative genius (“The Man Is Nonstop,” page 70). As we all know, Greenwich is also set to welcome another member of music royalty— Billy Joel. “Many of our husbands tagged along as cheerleaders— living proof that supporting each other’s interests makes for happier marriages.”

urray, hurray, the 1st of May! Actually, it’s the first weekend that holds a special place in my heart, ever since we Grace Notes were invited to join Spring Sing in 1971. This annual event was born sixty-five years ago when some frustrated former Whifs and Nassoons formed a capella groups of their own after college. The Palmer Squares (Princeton), Revelers (Plainfield, New Jersey) and Suburban Squires (Philadelphia) got together for a singing party on a barge floating down the canal in New Hope, Pennsylvania, in early May 1957; and history was born. As word spread, Spring Sing drew people from all over, such as the Spare Parts (Hartford), Augmented 8 (Washington), Grunyons (Detroit), Propah Bostonians, Denver Wizard Oils and Off Sounders from Greenwich. Hosting Spring Sing at Belle Haven in 1969, the Off Sounders were nice enough to invite us to do one number, and before long the Grace Notes became official members—the first women’s group outside of the Opposite Sextet, wives of the gents on that barge trip. Mixed groups were welcomed, too—with names like the Private Parts (Princeton). The schedule usually calls for informal singing Friday night, a formal program Saturday and impromptu tunes at Sunday brunch. We sang in myriad places, like the Library of Congress, Kennedy Center, SUNY, Goodspeed, Concord Academy and an opera house 8,000 feet above sea level in Colorado. Our first appearance was at the Potomac School in McLean, Virginia. Soprano Retta Dippy recalls: “I believe we sang Jane Watts’ arrangement of ‘Sunrise Sunset’ and knocked them all out!” The gig in Detroit’s Renaissance Hall was particularly memorable because the airline lost our M.C. Libby Flinn’s suitcase. So she borrowed clothes from each of us, wandered onstage wearing somebody else’s slip, skirt, rain jacket, sagging knee-highs and bedroom

slippers and announced, “This is what happens when you lose your luggage.” The audience roared. Luckily, the swim fins for her “Big Blue Frog” solo hadn't gone missing. When Libby was chairman of the Spring Sing we hosted here in ’76, her young son answered a call the preceding Sunday from one of the Augmented 8, asking to speak to her. “Well,” said Mikie, who was sick of the whole thing, “Mommy’s in the bathtub and won’t be out ’til Friday.” Many of our husbands tagged along as cheerleaders—living proof that supporting each other’s interests makes for happier marriages— and finally decided to get into the act when we were hosts here yet again. They called themselves the Gross Nuts. When our director Helen Bingaman rehearsed them on “I Found Love” (the Spring Sing “theme song,” with some key changes), they all wanted to stand next to Peter Malkin, who really could sing. They made their debut Friday night at Laddin’s Terrace— except Peter Littlefield tripped running into the room, making for a not-so-grand entrance, and they pitched the song so high that the audience couldn’t join in when prompted. Never mind. Their spirit counted—a lot. During Sunday brunch at the Riverside Yacht Club, my Jack went into the bar and ran across an old girlfriend, now married to one of the out-of-towners. When he asked how she was doing, since he hadn’t seen her for thirty years, she handed him her teeth. Poor thing. But the weekend was bright and sunny and, as always, would end on a high note. While the Gunyons were boarding the bus to the airport, I waved goodbye, shouting: “God was really good to us today!” In answer, the star of “Freddie Feel Good and his Funky Little Five-Piece Band,” yelled back: “Yes, She was, wasn’t She?!” Spring Sing will be in Bar Harbor, Maine, this month. May good things—and sings— go on forever. G

FOR OVER A DECADE, THE GREENWICH TOWN PARTY STAGE HAS HOSTED PLENTY OF MUSIC LEGENDS. WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE CELEBRATION THROUGH THE YEARS AND CHECK IN ON THE 2022 PARTY AS THE TEAM GEARS UP TO ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET FOR THEIR BIGGEST NAME YET—ROCK ROYALTY, MR. BILLY JOEL

ince its inception in 2011, the Greenwich Town Party has become the launch pad for the summer season, with live music on two stages, family-friendly activities and lots of good food. Born in the aftermath of the 2008 recession, the party is steadfast in its mission to cement community bonds. “It’s an event that brings people together no matter what’s happening in the world,” says Ray Rivers, GTP President. Traditionally held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, the GTP has presented a who’s who of world-class musicians over the years, as well as showcasing local talent on the town stage.

he founders knew what they were doing when they brought in Chicago jazz great Buddy Guy to headline the first GTP in 2011. The response was overwhelming, and the bar was set high. Since then, a score of musical greats has graced the GTP main stage, including Paul Simon (with a surprise dropin by Dave Matthews), Hall & Oates, James Taylor, Santana, Eric Clapton and, most recently, the Eagles and the Zac Brown Band. This year’s headliner is perhaps the most iconic yet—the “piano man” himself, Billy Joel, a multiple

the globe. He has sold 150 million records over the past quartercentury; in the past nearly fifty years, he has scored thirty-three consecutive Top 40 hits, with three of his best-known songs— “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “Tell Her About It” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire”—peaking at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. His monthly concert at Madison Square Garden sells out weeks in advance. “Billy Joel is the biggest name ever to play the town party,” says Ken Hays, GTP producer, who has fond memories of listening to Joel’s music as an adolescent. “I grew up in a musical family, and there was music around my house all the time,” he recalls. “I was never really that engaged until I heard Billy Joel’s The Stranger

Grammy Award-winner and three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “Billy Joel is one of those few remaining iconic musicians who has thrilled music lovers for most of their lives,” says Ray Dalio, founder of GTP and head of the music selection committee. “His songs give us both great music and great stories that make us want to dance to our histories. He is a musical legend that I want my Greenwich neighbors to experience all together.” “We’re thrilled,” adds Ray Rivers. “We have been trying to get him for years.” Joel, who lives on the south shore of Long Island, is one of the biggest concert draws in the world, selling out arenas and stadiums across

album. That changed my life. I wore out the vinyl, I wore out the needle.” For Hays, who has secured all the main stage talent for the GTP since 2011, getting Billy Joel and his team to say yes, was a big win for several reasons. “A lot of it has to do with Billy not wanting to do any long-distance travel and Covid being a big question mark,” says Hays. “Billy can cross the Sound and play for us. And then head back home. That’s something that’s really appealing to him. From a production standpoint, successfully staging the Eagles and Zac Brown last year gave him and his people the confidence that we have a strong team and that we are a first-class operation.”

from artists and fans was overwhelming. “It was incredibly uplifting for the community to have some sense of normalcy coming back from what was an incredibly challenging time,” says Ken Hays. “You could feel the energy in the crowd and the sense that we might just have made it through this to the other side.” With all the schedule changes (2020 was canceled altogether, then the new date of May 2021 was pushed to Labor Day weekend), the organizers had to do some last-minute scrambling to lock in talent. “Mumford and Sons, originally set for 2020, couldn’t make it,” says Hays. “And Zac Brown had a schedule conflict. But once we

nailed down the Eagles, Zac was able to work around his tour dates and join us.” Also on the main stage lineup were GTP favorites Caroline Jones, making her fourth appearance, and Preservation Hall Band (third visit), who had to drive from their home in New Orleans to the Florida panhandle to get a flight to New York after a hurricane closed the city. “We had to coordinate bringing the pets up and the families, because we didn’t know how long they’d have to be out of their city. It was pretty unsettling for those guys, but at the same time they are troopers,” says Hays. “No doubt it was a hard decision to cancel the party in 2020,” recalls Rivers. “It was the

obvious decision, but it was a disappointing decision. We told everyone to hang onto their tickets. Only a handful of people wanted their money back.” For Rivers, last year’s party was bittersweet. “We moved it to the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, which turned out to be the day after my son’s wedding in Italy, which we found out right after we signed the contract with the Eagles. It was the first time I had missed the party since its start.” Besides their normal support staffs, both the Eagles and Zac Brown traveled with their own physician and Covid compliance officer. “It was challenging, but we have a great team here that really did a fantastic job of keeping everyone safe,” says Hays.

HOMEGROWN TALENT

figuring out what I was doing. My family taught me if you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. I wanted to be the worst musician and songwriter in the room, because it means I’m in the right spot.” Nashville is a tough scene for any young artist to break into. “It took me three months to figure out how to book a show, then there was the tornado, then Covid, the bombing and Covid 2.0. It’s been a mess.” Despite the obstacles, he managed to book gigs locally and has done some touring to Kansas, Colorado, Virginia and Alabama. In April he and a buddy did their first festival in Texas. He’s presently in the studio finishing up his second album, Break My Heart, some of which he’ll debut at GTP. Fans can also expect to hear “Coming Home.” “That one is the only song I wrote before Nashville that I still play,” he says. “I’ve had people I don’t know come to my show and request it. It’s one of those songs that’s been good to me.” Mostly, though, he’s looking forward to being onstage—both literally and metaphorically. “It’s a way to validate what I’m doing. In the music industry there’s a lot of guess work, not knowing what’s coming next. This is a moment of being able to come back and be where I’m from and knowing I’m on a path and it feels like the right path.”

GIVING UP-AND-COMING BANDS THE SPOTLIGHT

A

nostalgic highlight of GTP are the bands that play the town stage, and though the full lineup hadn’t been set as of press time, at least one former Greenwich resident and rising Nashville star is set to make his debut in front of hometown fans. Henry Conlon was just twelve when he moved to Greenwich more than a decade ago. He dabbled in music a bit. "Friends would say, ‘Henry, you play guitar, why don’t you play us something?’ And I’d fumble through songs that were on the radio. It was the thing that brought me a lot of happiness and joy, but I was playing more as a hobby,” he recalls. It wasn’t until he got to George Washington University that he started to take his musical gift more seriously, though not necessarily as a career path. “I was more career-oriented rather than passion oriented,” he says. “In my upbringing you don’t see a lot of people pursuing music.” But after a few false starts, he stumbled into a job that he loved while living in New Haven. Working for an organization called

Musical Intervention, Conlon was able to use music therapy and outreach for individuals struggling with chronic homelessness, mental illness and addiction issues. He started songwriting. “It was my first real experience of having something I’d written and created for people who specifically came to hear me and react to me, and I was like, ‘Oh that’s it, I’m doing this forever.’ It was a light bulb moment for me.” A storyteller at heart, he points to Bruce Springsteen and John Pryne as being masters of the craft. “My thing has always been in finding a story that I believe should be told and telling it,” he says. He characterizes his style as Americana: “A uniquely American art form that marries country and blues and elements of rockabilly and rock and roll,” he says. “It’s really an amalgamation of influences that harken back to Austin in the ’70s with outlaw country music.” Conlon moved to Nashville three years ago, when he was twenty-two. “I was in an awkward space where I was

The same could be said for some of last year’s local bands, each of whom have strong ties to the community. And despite a day marked by frequent cloudbursts and lots of mud, nothing could have dampened the spirits of the hometown fans—or the musicians. Among them: Roctopus, Paloma Skye, Brunswick Music Improv, Rang-A-Boom and Charlie King & the Next Big Thing. For Jay Anderson, a Greenwich resident, who plays bass and sings backup vocals for Roctopus, a six-piece band originally started by a Brunswick grad, the opportunity to play at the GTP was one he’ll never forget. “We play a lot in New York and mostly in indoor venues. We’ve never had the opportunity to play a real show in front of that many people in our hometown. Combine that with being outside, post-pandemic, and then the weather. We would have played in a typhoon. It was awesome.” Melissa Nisenson, the cofounder and lead singer of Paloma Skye, agrees. “It was amazing. As a band, it was one of the most fun days we’ve ever had. Playing in front of a live audience, then staying all day through the Eagles concert—it was definitely a cathartic and high-energy experience.” She says the weather only added to the experience. “Luckily, we have very dear, dedicated friends who are happy to dance in the rain.”

As of press time, this year’s full lineup of local bands hadn’t been set. Check greenwichtownparty.org for the most up-to-date information.

The Eagle Landed

"I remember walking out of the mobile bathroom and down the steps and my shoes and sandals sinking down into the mud and being so grossed out. But then, rushing out to hear the Zac Brown Band, I could only laugh as I looked at everyone else's feet in the crowd. It was a muddy mess, yet actually the perfect visual to prove that even Mother Nature can't spoil the Town Party. “The GTP ’21 was a sea of 8,000 smiling faces reflecting pure joy and happiness, epitomizing the GTP’s mission of an annual celebration for the people of Greenwich to come together!”

2021 was a very special GTP for me because I got to perform twice—once with my band as a solo act, and once as a member of the Zac Brown Band. It felt like a homecoming after the pandemic. It’s a huge honor for me to tour as a special guest band member in the Zac Brown Band, who are some of the planet’s greatest musicians and performers, and to share that with my hometown was a thrill. It was also my first full-band show as a solo artist since the pandemic began, so there were definitely some butterflies! But the crowd was hyped, even in the rain. As soon as I got onstage and felt the extreme slipperyness under my boots, I had to kick them off and play the whole show barefoot.

“Watching the Eagles perform ‘Hotel California’ in my backyard was pretty special. I’ve seen the band about ten times over the years, and that song just gets more iconic. Watching Joe Walsh play lead guitar with the Greenwich skyline in the background was awesome.”

It was pouring rain, and no one cared one single bit! I felt like a little kid walking through anklehigh mud to get to the stage with Gary Dell’Abate. And when we screamed, ‘Please welcome the Zac Brown Band!’ the place went nuts! The energy in that crowd was electric. It was a moment I will never forget.

“There were many great memories of the 2021 GTP for me, but if I had to pick one, it would be seeing the Eagles, a group I grew up listening to as a kid. The memories of my life in my teen years came back to me with each song, and seeing the appreciative GTP crowd made the memory even more special. It was a reminder that all age groups can both appreciate songs and groups from bygone eras.”

If you’re interested in venturing outside your room, there is plenty to explore at The Maker. Executive Chef Michael Poirkoff, formerly of Brooklyn-favorite Vinegar Hill House, oversees the culinary direction for all three dining spaces on-site. Early risers can choose from a variety of daily-made pastries and viennoiseries at The Maker Café, which is also open for lunch. Staying for dinner? Restoring your pelvic floor could mean BIG CHANGES IN OVERALL WELLNESS

I

f we’ve learned anything over the past couple of years, it’s that health really is wealth. And, in this case, we are talking about pelvic health, something that can affect both women and men. It can be the reason why you pee a little when you sneeze or why you can’t take a deep cleansing breath. So many issues can arise when your pelvis isn’t in tip-top shape and Indigo Wellness wants to help with that. The practice, with offices in Stamford and Westport, is owned and operated by Sarah Swanberg, doctor of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. In addition to an array of other services, Indigo offers pelvic floor therapy to help achieve and maintain optimal pelvic health. The misconception, Swanberg says, is that pelvic issues are only something women who have had difficult childbirth experiences need to pay attention to. That theory was debunked when we chatted with Swanberg and two of the experts on her team to learn more. Kara Fanelli, PT, DPT, board-certified clinical specialist in women’s health physical therapy, and Jodie Lippman PT, DPT, work with patients—both female and male—on pelvic rehab for a variety of ailments. Pelvic physical therapy focuses on all musculoskeletal and behavioral aspects of the abdomen and pelvis. Pelvic floor muscles aid in everything from bladder, bowel and sexual function to postural stability and organ support. How does one know if they might benefit from pelvic floor therapy? “If you are aware of your pelvic region when you shouldn’t be, there’s a problem. It’s a part of your body but think of it like your nose…you know you it’s there, but you don’t feel it all day, says Fanelli. An initial appointment at Indigo includes

What are some signs of pelvic issues that might be blamed on something else? “The inability to take a deep breath, symptoms that feel like a yeast or urinary tract infection (that test negative), back pain and diastasis recti (abdominal wall separation) can all be due to pelvic dysfunction,” says Lippman. Are women, pregnant and postpartum, the most susceptible to urinary issues? “Yes. Pregnant women, postpartum women, and menopausal women are prone to urinary issues. However, people who have a lot of stress and

an exam, comprehensive history, and a look at the patient’s posture, understanding strength throughout the body and the way muscles feel and fire are all crucial in developing a treatment plan.

anxiety can also be susceptible to pelvic floor dysfunctions. Our pelvic floor gets tight and reacts to tension just like our shoulders do. Also female athletes who have repetitive highintensity and do high-impact activities with improper technique and poor breathing, like lifting weights, kicking balls and jumping and shooting, are also particularly susceptible to pelvic floor dysfunction and bladder problems,” says Lippman. Leakage is normal after having a baby, right? “After childbirth, many women assume that leakage is normal. It isn’t. While it’s initially common right after childbirth, it can be dramatically improved with pelvic physical therapy and shouldn’t be a lifelong issue,” says Fanelli. For women who have had C-sections, bladder issues seem surprising but not to the experts. “The scar lives right on top of the bladder, if it doesn’t move well it can cause issues for the bladder. Leakage can also arise from pressure management problems. When picking up something heavy, if the abdominal wall doesn’t contract and fire while also allowing the pelvic floor to lift, this is where issues with leakage will occur,” says Fanelli. “The pressure always goes to the weakest point. If there is weakness in the abdominal wall’s connective tissue or in the pelvic floor muscles, then all the pressure will follow that weakness,” adds Lippman.

INDIGO WELLNESS In addition to Pelvic Health Physical Therapy, Indigo offers acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, cupping, nutrition counseling and group programs. Their abundant toolbox of services are all interwoven to help their patients achieve optimum mind/body health. “The end goal is to create a robust support system. We believe that the best patient care happens when everyone involved is talking—the more eyes on the patient to help with their journey of wellness, the better,” says Swanberg.

Why does the pelvis affect so many other parts of the body?

ELENAVOLF - STOCK.ADOBE.COM

Going Strong

“If you picture your body as an actual house, your pelvic floor would be the ground, the foundation; your abdominals and core would be the walls, helping to stabilize; and your diaphragm would be the roof, some people even think of as high up as the glottis in the throat as the top,” says Lippman. With this structure in mind, “you can’t breathe properly unless your diaphragm and pelvic floor are working together. Upper chest breathing can be caused by a lack of movement in the diaphragm, which can contribute to pelvic floor muscle tension. We’ll often hear patients say things like ‘I can’t talk and walk without getting out of breath’ and it’s because their diaphragm isn’t moving the way that it’s supposed to,” says Fanelli.

open kitchen and simple black and white and wood décor with ring chandeliers shedding light on it all. The narrow restaurant has a long row of tables nestled along a banquette in the front of the space with some booths and a few tables in back, which is the quieter section. The well-edited menu and daily specials will please a range of appetites. It’s a lineup of lighter Italian fare along with some decadent apps, pastas and entrées. The namesake Bianca appetizer, which showcases the chef ’s daily selection of raw fish, is well worth ordering. On the night we were there, the dish was a salad of arugula and radishes in a citrusy dressing topped with melt-in-your-mouth slices of salmon and tuna with a sprinkling of red peppercorns finishing the plate. We enjoyed our salads, including a frisée special, but my favorite is the segato di carciofi—delicious sliced artichoke hearts mixed with arugula and generous shavings of parmesan, all dressed with a lemon-infused olive oil. The tuna tartare appetizer pairs

fresh chopped bluefish tuna with radish and fennel over a bed of quinoa, an unexpected and refreshing preparation. We were less enthused by the eggplant croquettes, which were a tad greasy. Thanks to the open kitchen, you can see the flames from the high-powered gas oven used to prepare some of the best entrées, including a perfectly cooked whole branzino served with sautéed spinach and an herb-laden roasted chicken paired with a salad of spinach, burrata, roasted carrots and fennel. In lieu of pizza, which has a big following at the owners’ city restaurants, the menu here highlights a selection of flatbreads and fried dough with toppings such as prosciutto and

buffalo mozzarella. We chose instead to indulge in the pasta, a must-order. For truffle lovers, the cacio e pepe tartufata is a bowl of heaven, tender orecchiette with pecorino romano and pepper in a sauce laced with truffle carpaccio. Equally heartwarming and incredible, the amatriciana pasta bowl is the ultimate Italian comfort food with a bright tomato sauce, pieces of guanciale with crispy edges all topped with pecorino and ribbons of fresh herbs. Splurge-worthy desserts include caramel panna cotta and tortino al cioccolato, a chocolate souffle warm from the oven and topped with vanilla ice cream. For a little caffeine to finish the meal, try the affogato, ice cream with an espresso pour-over and crumbled biscotti. Open late (on Saturdays you can book a table at 10 p.m.), Bianca is designed to house a small bar scene, and there’s a compelling cocktail list to match. And the signature drinks, like the Greenwich Bourbon, with homemade ginger syrup, crème de cassis, lemon and soda, seem G like an ideal end to the night. Salute!

money matters FED UP

Scott Bogan

A

s scientific minds wrestled with keeping people safe during Covid-19, the quarantine threatened to take down the economy. In Fairfield County and beyond, businesses closed, events were canceled and people stopped commuting to the office. Close to 10 million people lost jobs nationwide, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Fearing sinking corporate profits, investors unloaded stocks and, over a series of weeks, the market plunged by nearly a third.

BY CAROL LEONETTI DANNHAUSER

UNPACKING INFLATION, FROM POLICY TO POCKETBOOK

All the while, the Federal Reserve System worked feverishly to save the monetary system. The Fed stormed to the rescue, literally printing money, supplying banks with cash and buying massive amounts of government and corporate debt. The goals: to maximize employment and to keep prices as stable as possible. In other words, “massive quantitative easing,” says Scott Bogan of Wilton, a wealth adviser and capital markets strategist with GYL Financial Synergies in Westport. Part psychologist, part educator, part seer, part market strategist, he helps the investment advisory firm unpack how the Fed’s movements affect clients’ pocketbooks. His advice: Take a few moments now to understand how the Fed’s actions affect you. The Fed, which is nonpartisan and operates independent of Congress, is the central bank for the United States. “Interest rates are a tool they can use to stimulate activity in the economy,” Bogan says. During the pandemic, the Fed slashed the interest rate that banks pay to borrow from one another to near

zero. Consumers benefited, from lower rates on mortgages, car loans and credit cards, increasing buying power. “If your mortgage is 5 percent versus 2.5 percent, you can borrow a lot more at 2.5 percent. It trickles through,” Bogan says. Massive government stimulus programs infused households with free money. A booming economy and record low unemployment followed. Costs for goods and services crept up to 7.5 percent at the end of January 2022, the highest increase in forty years. Food costs are 7 percent more now than last year. Electricity is up more than 10 percent. Before the invasion of Ukraine, gasoline prices had soared 40 percent higher than 2021, according to the Consumer Price Index; the invasion led to an even greater surge. Early this year, the Fed turned on its heel. Enter quantitative tightening. The Fed plans to raise interest rates to cool the hot economy. It won’t be reinvesting those interest payments from banks. “They’re going to take that money and go to a giant furnace and incinerate it,” Bogan reports.

Less cash translates to costlier loans and fewer purchases. Expect car loans, mortgages and the like to be cheaper now than in months ahead. Higher interest rates make the dollar worth less abroad as well; international trips and purchases will cost more later in the year. Bonds, stocks and real estate all behave differently when interest rates increase. Bonds are supposed to be the safety net in a portfolio, helping to keep that nest egg from cracking. But rising interest rates cause bond yields to go up— and values to fall—in the short term. “Expect a hit to your bond portfolio,” Bogan says. Alternatively, “real estate in a high inflationary period has been a good place to go. Lease agreements typically have built-in rent escalation clauses. They help real-estate landlords hedge their revenue streams,” says Bogan. As for the stock market, expect volatility, “causing the stock market to reprice,” Bogan says. Talk to your adviser about the risks and the timeline in your portfolio, so that as the Fed works to steady the monetary system, you’re prepared.

While inflation and invasions seesaw the market, one stalwart is returning with a new luster: the good old certificate of deposit. Each time the Fed hikes interest rates, bank rates “will start to rise and cash will generate a return,” Bogan says. If you want to stash your cash in the short term, consider laddering some CDs. Stagger maturity rates, from one to four years, maybe, then as soon as one matures a year down the road, you can reinvest it—or weigh your options in what will hopefully be a more stable environment.

So for a town that values books, it’s no surprise that during the pandemic neighborhood Little Free Libraries sprouted up. When Covid exploded and local libraries and bookstores limited hours and shut down, several Greenwich residents devised ways to fill the need for literature through book swaps.

A LITTLE EXPLORING WIND IN THE WILLOWMERE This free library began in one Riverside neighborhood during lockdown, when children quickly exhausted their at-home book supplies. Willowmere resident Stephanie Martin began researching how to create a local library to share books for all ages. With the craftsmanship of neighbor Brendan Hoffman and the artistry of Ann Goffin, the “Wind in the Willowmere Little Free Library” opened in May 2021. Since then, managing the books has been a labor of love for Stephanie, who has a bird’seye view from her home to watch visitors young and old explore, select and deposit books in the library on Willowmere Pond. As pandemic restrictions eased and local libraries reopened, she kept the easily accessible book hub going. And it continues to be a regular gathering spot. Stephanie visits the library every few days, straightening and organizing books, adding new donations and removing titles that have sat on the shelf for too long. The library holds about thirty titles from children’s books and cookbooks to classics and bestsellers.

ALISON NICHOLS GRAY

GARDEN OF WORDS Old Greenwich resident Christine Negroni’s journey to create her free library began with a novel a friend shared from another free local library. Inspired by the book that she enjoyed but might have otherwise never discovered, Christine was intrigued by the idea of a book swap. A New York Times best-selling author herself, she knows the value of reading. A proponent of sustainability, she built the library using a former kitchen cabinet and other recycled items. The “Garden of Words Little Free Library” on Highview in Old Greenwich opened on Halloween 2020 with the help of New York artist Danielle Dimston, who painted two original art panels on the unit. Registered with the Little Free

Library organization, this is one of a few registered Little Free Libraries in Greenwich. Christine curates titles as any small bookstore would. She features holiday books seasonally and holds excess books at home to rotate in, based on seasonality and topic. Beyond a love of reading, Christine is enthusiastic about the community building and literary discovery that the library encourages. Readers explore books they might not otherwise select and that may lead them to a new favorite author, subject or genre. Unique to the “Garden of Words” library is a section dedicated to non-perishable items such as toothpaste, beans, peanut butter and rice. Christine says it’s about creating a sense of sharing that inspires neighbors to be noticeably friendlier and positive about the neighborhood.

HOW TO OPEN YOUR LIBRARY? Stephanie Martin’s tip is simple—just get it done. She explains that once created, the libraries almost run on their own. It’s the building that can be the biggest challenge, especially if designing from scratch. Christine Negroni points out that caulk is key in creating a waterproof space and advises keeping space for airflow by avoiding completely filling the library with books. She also uses the little silica gel dehumidifying packets that arrive in so many of our packages and stashes them in the library to absorb excess humidity in damp months. The best resource is the Little Free Library organization. This national nonprofit has more than 90,000 registered Little Free Libraries. Its website has information on how to create a library and also offers ready-made units starting at $169. Home-built libraries can be registered and added to a national map of Little Free Llibraries on the website for $39.95. Registering a library gives creators access to support and networking. Each library receives a recognition plaque. littlefreelibrary.org

THE LITTLE RED LIBRARY IN COS COB Another registered Greenwich Little Free Library is in Cos Cob, tucked next to the former Starbucks in Mill Pond Chess Park. It displays the organization’s simple motto—Take a Book, Share a Book. The “Little Red Library,” donated to the town by Kate Marlow and Daisy Florin, is at the corner of Strickland Road and Putnam Avenue. The spot provides a great place for readers to grab a book by the park and enjoy the view.

A Little Free library on Steamboat Road

HOLLY HILL BOOK SWAP The most popular and well-established little free library in town is not so little. The Holly Hill Book Swap has been run by volunteers at the Holly Hill Recycling Center for over forty years. Founded by Doug

Francefort and housed in the Book Shed, the Book Swap is open Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and averages 200 visitors a day. The more than 4,000 books (and some CDs) in the shed are from every genre, including coffee table books. An estimated 40,000 books go through the site annually. Greenwich residents can take up to ten a day and can donate anytime the Holly Hill Recycling Center is open. In response to getting more books than can be used, in 2015 the volunteers created the organization Books4Everyone to support literacy throughout Fairfield County. Up to twenty boxes a week are taken to homeless shelters, schools in need and community organizations. Volunteers also sort books and manage smaller free libraries in a number of senior centers such as Hill House, Nathaniel Witherell and distribute children’s books to Greenwich CCI, Inspirica, Bridgeport Schools, Domus and many more. Book Swap shelves can be found all over town including the Island Beach Ferry, Tod’s Point, Old Greenwich train station, Packages Plus in the Mill Pond Shopping Center and the Greenwich Benheim Cancer Center. It’s nice to know a good read is never out of reach. books4everyone.org

blind date at Roanoke College was so awkward there was no choice but to be “just friends”—for five years—before trying again. Thankfully, patience is a virtue, and Charlie began to notice how Gretchen never could seem to approve of who he dated. The two gave dating a second chance, and it clicked. The couple was together for three years before getting engaged. It meant long-distance for two of those years and then a cross-country move for Gretchen to Los Angeles. Charlie and Gretchen boarded a boat for what Gretchen assumed was just a day on the lake on Lake Kezar, Maine, where the Moshers enjoy their summers. Tucked away in one of their favorite coves with no one else around except for the loons, Charlie got down on one knee and asked her to spend forever with him. Charlie’s family pulled up in separate boats, cheering and, of course, popping champagne. Pastor Paul Richter officiated at the ceremony at Frederick Douglass Maritime Museum in Baltimore, where the reception followed. The bride, daughter of Roy Gingher and Tracy Jasion of Maryland, graduated from Concordia Preparatory School, Roanoke College and Concordia University. Gretchen is a high school English teacher in the Pasadena Unified School District. The groom, son of Chuck and Ellen Mosher of Greenwich, graduated from King School and Roanoke College. Charlie works in television and film production in Los Angeles. The newlyweds live in North Hollywood, Califorinia. »

These lyrics are from Broadway’s soul-shaking, zeitgeist-quaking, brilliant-doesn’t-even-begin-to-describe-it Hamilton, but they may as well have been written about its Pulitzer-, Emmy-, Grammy- and Tonywinning creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda. Twice nominated for an Oscar, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be vaulted into not just EGOT territory but the PEGOT stratosphere, where only five other luminaries in history have managed to ascend. Meanwhile, Lin just wants his morning coffee. “I always believe the marker of success for any New Yorker is you can walk into your local store, and they just start making your order because you go there so much,” he tells me from his home in Washington Heights, the same neighborhood

JOAN MARCUS

How do you write like you’re running out of time? Write day and night like you’re running out of time? Every day you fight, like you’re running out of time, Like you’re running out of time Are you running out of time? Awwww! How do you write like tomorrow won’t arrive? How do you write like you need it to survive? How do you write every second you’re alive? Every second you’re alive? Every second you’re alive?

MIKE AND ANIMALS BY JULIE BIDWELL, ALL OTHERS BY VENERA ALEXANDROVA

A man sits hunched over his desk, furiously scratching pen to paper. He looks up, dark eyes in a trance. A new thought crystallizes. The chin nods, faster now, the feet tap, the seat rumbles, the brain’s circuit board ignites— yes!—as he snatches it from the ether, swerves it through his pen, ripping through sheets like sails flapping.

HOW DO YOU WRITE LIKE TOMORROW WON’T ARRIVE? HOW DO YOU WRITE LIKE YOU NEED IT TO SURVIVE? HOW DO YOU

he’s lived in for nearly his entire life. “That’s when you know you’ve made it.” So, I ask him, has he made it? “Oh, one hundred percent,” he says excitedly, and tells me what his order is. “Egg and cheese with ketchup, and a small coffee with milk and sugar. I’m trying to cut down on the sugar, and my buddy Sinod who works at the bodega always makes fun of me. He’s like, ‘You like the sugar,’ and I say, ‘I know, just put one less in today. I’m gonna wean myself off.’” I ask Miranda how many hours of sleep he gets a night—suddenly it seems crucial to know the MacArthur Genius Grant recipient’s circadian rhythm, as if it could somehow explain his brilliance—and he says on average, seven. “I’m not much of a night owl, and last night I fell asleep watching New Girl with my head in my wife’s lap. We should’ve just watched two but we went for the third and I knocked out.” Let it be known: Lin-Manuel Miranda is Netflix and Chilling, just like the rest of us. “But I have to wake up at six a.m. and get my kids off to school, no matter what time I go to bed,” continues the neighborhood dad, who still loves riding the train and has been known to chat up a breakdancer or mariachi bander on occasion. “But, yeah, I’m usually about seven hours, unless I’ve got some sort of deadline and I have to do an all-nighter.” I ask if that means being mildly or heavily caffeinated. “It’s funny, for me, caffeine is much more about the ritual than the drug;

EGOTS, PEGOTS AND GOATS Ok, I say, but can we get back to how nail-bitingly close he is to the PEGOT, because statistically speaking, this would be major. To flex another acronym, GOAT-level major. He laughs. “It’s a really cool stat, right? Like, you look at the people who have won the EGOT, and that’s a really awesome group of people, you know?” he says with an endearing voice-crack, before citing Rita Moreno and Marvin Hamlisch, two PEGOT legends. “But it is a stat. At the Australian Open, Rafa Nadal was tied for the record for the most majors, but I guar-an-tee you he was not thinking about that when another person half his age was hitting a ball at him,” he laughs exuberantly, “a hundred and fifty miles an hour. He was figuring out, how do I solve this? How do I solve this point, and this set and this match? And that’s really what I do, I’m trying to figure out this moment, I’m trying to figure out this song, I’m trying to figure out this

it’s about getting up to make the coffee,” he says. “I can have a cup of coffee and go right to sleep. It really doesn’t matter. If it’s time to go to sleep, it’s time. On a few rare occasions I’ll kind of hit it harder because I have to stay up late to finish some tune or another, but for me it’s much more, ‘Alright, I wrote a little bit, lemme get up and make another cup of coffee.’ The promise of it is what keeps me awake, more than the actual chemical.”

scene, and I’m very, very lucky that it puts me in this statistical conversation. But it’s really not what you think about when it’s eleven p.m. and you want to go to bed and you’re sitting at your piano.” So how does it flow on those late nights, when he’s chugging coffee, trying to birth a moment, a song, a scene? He chuckles. “I’ll take the music any way it comes out, natural or C-section. Sometimes it is a lyrical idea that I really like. Sometimes it’s just writing enough of a chord progression or a beat that I can walk around with, and just improvise inside it; and when it feels true, I write it down. For Encanto, I started with just a lot of research, like what are the different forms and types of music coming out of this part of the world? What are the instruments you can play with? I’ve written in as many different ways as I have songs.” He gives me an example that would make any Hamilton junkie nerd out: “For ‘My Shot,’ I really started lyrically. I probably worked on those verses for months before I committed to any music under them,” he says. “Mainly because I was scared of getting started, because once you’re in, you’re committed. And it was a long time before I figured out what the chord progression was for ‘My Shot.’ I had that hook, and I had those verses, and it took me awhile to settle on what the music was, because once you settle on the music, you’re settling on music for the rest of the night. Because I know I’m going to bring these themes back around.

So, yeah, that’s one where I totally started with lyric, but a song like ‘Washington on Your Side,’ that one I started with the beat. I was trying to make the most interesting beat I could, what is the most nonHamilton-sounding thing I can make? It’s really kind of creeping, and kind of in six, and I wrote to that beat once I found something I really enjoyed.” It’s almost surreal to hear the nuts-and-bolts beginnings of Hamilton, given its prescience in illuminating such a bigger conversation over the past two elections, with immigration, with BLM … “Never thinking I would do that, just knowing this is a story worth telling,” he breaks in, “just knowing that when I read that biography being like, ‘There’s just a lot here.’ There’s a lot in telling Alexander’s story that you have to unpack because it is accidentally a country origin story, it is a story about fatherhood, it is a story about legacy, about which legacies get told and which don’t, and …” his voice catches, “the idea scared the hell out of me. I have to know so much more than I do presently to actually be able to write this. I have to learn more history than I’ve ever learned, I have to learn how to compress that into songs, which I don’t know how to do; I’ve never worked with history as a subject. There’s a lot I don’t know how to do about this that terrifies me; but it’s a good story, worth learning how to do all of those things. I always want to lean into what terrifies me.” »

enjoyed my first ‘at bat,’” he says. “It was a story I felt like I knew intimately well, and I felt uniquely suited to tell; and having been a musical songwriter, I felt like I could tell the story of this musical songwriter with some insight. You also learn a lot about your own temperament, right? You learn, ‘Oh, I’m not fazed by this pressure or this pressure, but I’m anxious about this,’ and lean into that: Why am I anxious about that? You have to make so many decisions that it ends up being personal by virtue of the volume of decisions you have to make. It’s like playing the organ”—which makes us both crack up, because now it’s hard not to envision him hunched over an organ, Phantom of the Opera-style, before he stops giggling and finishes: “It requires every part of you to play it well, so I’m really excited by it and hope I have the opportunity to do it more.” A SYMPHONY OF FOUR Despite having seemingly endless raw material to explore, Miranda is taking a measured approach. Well, as measured as a multihyphenate wunderkind can. “I’m not an island anymore,” he says. “I have a wife I love and kids I love,” he says of Vanessa Nadal, his wife of twelve years, and sons Sebastian, seven, and Francisco, four, “and the decisions

that I make in my life are committee decisions. I’m always trying to chase what I’m passionate about, but I also know that I’m not going to say yes to a movie that takes me halfway across the world tomorrow, because I’ve got kids to tuck in, kids that need to be cared for. So they’re joint decisions when we embark on stuff. And, honestly, that balance is something you struggle with your entire life, the family life-work balance, and I’m giving it my best, like everyone else,” he says. “I want to make work that excites me and scares me and that I learn from by engaging in it, and I want my kids to be able to say, ‘Yeah, you’re around a lot.’” Miranda credits Nadal with maintaining their family life-work equilibrium, as well as helping him usher Hamilton into the world in 2015. “When I reconnected with Vanessa, she was a scientist and then she pivoted into law, and now she’s finding ways to marry both of those things in her career; but, also, she always made space for my work. She identified really early, ‘You know, you’re at your happiest when you’ve just written something,’ he says self-mockingly. ‘So what are the conditions that we can create to make that happen as often as possible?’ And so, (above) The Madrigal family • (below) Dolores and Mirabel in you know, Hamilton exists because she said, ‘You don’t get Oscar-winning Encanto; Miranda any writing done in New York because life happens, so wrote its record-breaking soundtrack and was nominated let’s go away. Eleven Tonys, a Grammy, Kennedy Center honors and a Pulitzer later, it looks like she made the right call. Worth noting: We also have Nadal to thank in part for Tony-winning Renée Elise Goldsberry’s dizzyingly complex rap performances in Hamilton. “Very early in, Vanessa pointed out to me, ‘You know in Heights, the women sing and the men rap, and that’s not even where your own discography plays out; you listen to a lot of female rappers,’” he says. “So, an observation she made about my last show directly went into Angelica having kind of the toughest bars in the show.”

in our case uptown New York; it’s about the people we love and finding home wherever they are, whether that’s here in your neighborhood or wherever you find yourselves, and whether it’s something to change or something to run from. “And also with gentrification it’s kind of a part of the daily heartbreak of being a New Yorker. You grow up in a place and you watch it change, for better or for worse. Ask any New Yorker who has been here for a certain amount of time, they will lament some place they lost, and that’s part of it; that’s actually part of our conversation at any given moment, and finding your way toward what your home is.” For Miranda, home has always been inextricably tied to helping his THE HEIGHTS OF LOVE community, starting with the example set by his parents, Dr. Luz TownsNadal and Miranda’s story began years before either of them knew it, and Miranda and Luis A. He says someone else phrased it better: You get put into the play with no dress rehearsal…that’s what life is. “I think just as a fan of so many artists, you can’t help but think about what they made, how much time they had to make it,” he continues. “There are the Shakespeares and Sondheims of the world who may leave behind an enormously prolific body of work, and there are the folks who leave behind one masterpiece—that’s not to say they didn’t live an incredibly fulfilling life, but the masterpiece is what we know about. I also think it’s just a function of being the heroes I was drawn to. I remember having a poster of Brandon Lee on my wall and thinking of the tragedy of that promise cut short. Brandon Lee was about to be an enormous movie star when tragedy befell him on the set of The Crow. Jonathan Larson did exactly what he wanted to do; he changed the landscape of musical theater but, tragically, he did not live to see how much he changed it. Again, I think because I’ve been drawn to artists like that, it informs my work and fuels my work.” But today, the only kind of fueling Lin-Manuel Miranda is doing is of the decaf variety. This boy is taking a beat. “I’m in the middle of several things, which is honestly like a huge downgrade for me in a nice way. I’m just sort of enjoying the way tick, tick and Encanto have connected with folks and getting to talk about it, which is nice. I had four movies come out last year, so I’m just refilling my cup, taking my kids to school and

tucking ’em in and reading books and watching movies. Like really just refilling; that’s all I’m doing this year. I think I’ve earned a little vacation.” But I don’t believe him, not entirely. In fact, I’m tempted to remind him of what he famously did on a prior vacation: tote along an encyclopedic biography by the name of Alexander Hamilton … and look where that got him. But the day is catching up on Mr. Miranda; he has to jump on a call, and his kids will be home from school soon. Parents to check in with, perhaps the Fund, too. Who knows, he and Vanessa may even sneak in another episode of New Girl later. And it hits me, what he said earlier about not being an island. While they both wrote the impossible, time at their heels, underdogs who rose to historic heights against the backdrop of New York City, Lin has never let his family slip from his sight line; and this may be one of the biggest things that separates him from Alexander. So, I let it go, tossing him a softball question to bring it home: What is his favorite word? Curiously, it gives him more pause than anything I’ve asked all afternoon. Perhaps for a writer never lost for words, it’s hard to pin down just one. But he finally lands on it. “You know what my favorite word is now? It’s yes. That is a conversation I’ve been having with my kids. Like, before you say you don’t like this food, just say yes, and try it. Before you shut down your brother’s offer for what you’re going to do this afternoon, just say yes and try it,” he says, brightly. “I’m in a Shonda Rhimes Land of Yes these days, both with my kids and with my life.”

With work from home becoming the norm, people are putting major resources toward their home offices. Some create oneof-a-kind dedicated workrooms with beautiful views, while others prefer a space that does double duty as a sitting area, library or a place for guests. The key is to incorporate the functionality of a corporate office, including the best lighting technology and WiFi, while keeping the décor suitable and stylish enough for a residential setting. “People look for comfortable, generous-sized workspaces where they have a main desk and built-in storage, file drawers, shelves and cabinets that hide the office equipment when it’s not being used,” says Chuck Hilton of Charles Hilton Architects. His firm has designed many upscale offices, including one with views so exceptional it may be hard for its owners to stay focused on work. This office is set in a shingle-style house right on the Sound, overlooking Tod’s Point. “It’s light, bright and clean and fits in with the house, yet it makes reference to the waterfront with a nautical theme,” says Chuck. “They are boaters who love to be on the water.” Designed as a his-and-hers office for husband and wife, the twin mahogany desks with brass hardware are built into a bowed space with windows, recalling the bow of a boat. Pull-out storage space between the two desks keeps office supplies and equipment from competing with the views. The ceiling is decked with bead board and mahogany beams. Opposite the desk area there’s comfortable seating for four by a mahogany-trimmed fireplace, perfect if one of the homeowners wants to host a meeting or if they’re looking for a spot to relax after a long day at the “office.”

GAME ON! CHARLES HILTON ARCHITECTS Families who play together will never get bored in the latest well-appointed game and hobby rooms. Some are installing kitchenettes for kids who love to bake, dedicated arts-and-crafts rooms, painting studios, custom pool tables, deluxe ping-pong tables and home theaters. For outdoor “gaming,” in addition to amazing pool houses, certain athletics-minded homeowners are even making room for basketball, squash or tennis courts. One racket-sports–obsessed client of Charles Hilton Architects requested a one-of-kind tennis pavilion on their Georgian estate in Greenwich. It has special details such as rackets carved into stone and windows that reference tennis balls.

SPA RETREAT SBP HOMES sbphomes.com

“The ultimate good life is when your house is a vacation place,” says Doron Sabag of SBP Homes. To that end, his clients are building luxe spa features—spaces to retreat and relax. “We see more and more people asking for infrared saunas in the basement and sauna rooms attached to the master bathroom,” he says. “We’re doing that in almost every [client’s] house.” At one waterfront home in Old Greenwich designed by SBP and Turner-White Architecture, the spa is so unique and spacious that the owners won’t be checking into Miraval anytime soon. The couple, who are Scandinavian and South African, view sauna time as not just a private health treatment but also a social activity and something to benefit the whole family. So their new sauna can accommodate ten to twelve people and the steam room up to five. The steam room is finished in a beautiful Negra Marquina marble, selected by interior designer Amy Hirsch, with curved chaises, radiant heat, niches, benches and a ceiling covered in fiber-optic lights that illuminate constellation patterns. The sauna is lined in a light aspen wood and kept to precise temperatures using a special heater from Finland. Both have floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Long Island Sound with sunset views. There’s a terrace off the spa with radiant heat and a fire pit, so they can sit outside even in the colder months. Says Doron, “It was designed to be very soothing, to take away the stress of the day.” » MAY 2022 GREENWICH

For collectors, some type of wine storage is a must-have. At a waterfront estate designed by Vanderhorn Architects, the concept has gone high tech with a James Bond-esque wine wall. The wall storage, which is three bottles deep, keeps the wine at precise temperatures and has built-in security. There’s a touchpad next to the wall, and only the right fingerprint will unlock the bottles.

Our desire to spend time close to nature and boost our vitamin D levels is driving projects like sun rooms, conservatories and interior spaces that connect to the outdoors. At one client’s house in midcountry Greenwich, Vanderhorn Architects created a backyard patio with stone fireplace and a glass roof that has its own heating system. “It extends the year. You can even use it in the rain, crank up the heaters, turn on the fireplace,” says Doug Vanderhorn. To refresh the family’s breakfast room—already a sunny spot with glass doors leading the patio—the team replaced its normal shingle-style roof with a glass top that connects to the patio roof. “It was like adding a piece of greenhouse,” he says. Now the family can start any day of the year feeling like they’re eating al fresco.

HEALTHY HARVEST HOMEFRONT FARMERS homefrontfarmers.com

Even for those not blessed with a green thumb, a backyard garden bursting with color and fresh vegetables is within reach.

7

An organic vegetable garden can turn part of your backyard into a bounty for the kitchen, yielding the freshest produce available. But not everyone knows how, what and when to plant. That’s where Homefront Farmers can help. The company designs, plans and plants attractive veggie gardens. Clients are assigned a homestead manager, who will visit and tend to the garden at least once a week from April through late November. The gardens are planted three times during the growing season, bringing in new crops that will thrive in different seasons. “The trick is to grow the right things at the right time,” says John Carlson, who founded Homefront Farmers ten years ago. “You may start out with snap peas, and when they burn out in June you might put in beans and then grow those for a few months and replace those with spinach for the fall.” His team makes the most of space, growing tomatoes in columns and cucumbers or beans up the fence, using vertical space when possible. Clients can pick unusual varieties like beautiful heirloom tomatoes in different hues, dozens of types of peppers, potatoes and squashes (pattypan and French rond de Nice), pumpkins, beans and greens, plus watermelons, cantaloupes and other fruits. All of the organic plants are grown from seed on an eleven-acre farm in Redding. Many clients like to help with the harvest and be active in their gardens. “They want to get their kids involved and show them where food comes from,” says John. “We help people to experience the joy of growing their own food.”

More homes are blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living with rooms that have seamless transitions to decks, patios and yards. Think banks of retractable glass doors, large windows that tuck into pocket walls and motorized bug screens that enable the entire back of a home to open to nature. “People are making outdoor rooms with all the attributes of an indoor room,” explains David LaPierre of Robert Cardello Architects, who says that indoor-outdoor blending is a continuing trend. He designed this waterfront home in Rowayton that opens completely to a multi-level terrace. The outdoor family room features all the comforts of inside, with upholstered seating, flat-screen TV, fireplace and ceiling fan—plus views to the pool, spa and beach beyond. “The only thing missing is walls,” he says.

Staying home doesn’t have to mean staying inside. Gorgeous outdoor living spaces are a continuing trend.

“It’s calming to have your house in order,” says designer Mary Jo Fornshell of California Closets, who says she’s seen an influx of people wanting to get organized. “It’s a way to take control over your space and improve dayto-day living.” Even in a yoga-pant world where every day is casual Friday, people still care very much about their wardrobes, she says, and a beautiful, custom dressing room is high on people’s wish lists. It’s one spot in the home that is completely tailored to the individual. What’s inside the dream closet? She’s installing shoe walls with mirrored backing, glass shelves for handbags, lots of lighting and mirrors and, yes, wine fridges. Recent projects include a particularly chic all-black closet with black and gray wallpaper and light carpet. Lighting and mirrors keep the space from looking too dark. It has a boutique feel, says Mary Jo, a place to shop your closet and enjoy the ritual of getting dressed up again.

One thing is certain in the fashion world: Boutique-inspired closets will never go out of style.

Elissa Sigalow was looking for high-quality Scandinavian-inspired pieces when she was designing her own home. Unable to find what she wanted, she took matters into her own hands. The result was a combination of dining, accent and lounge chairs created in supple leathers, natural woods and clean textures with a minimalist design. She wanted to create items that she would not tire of over time and were like “that effortlessly cool best friend that sticks with you through it all.” We think she has achieved that and more in this Nordic meets California-inspired space in the heart of Westport.

Suzanne and Lauren McGrath have a knack for seamlessly blending classic interiors with a masterfully layered Brooklyn townhouse vibe. This mother-daughter team embraces vintage artifacts while seamlessly blending in some of their favorite artisans and artists. This year they expanded to open a studio shop (adjacent to their studio on West Putnam Ave. in Greenwich) to display some of their most treasured pieces. Table linens and special serving pieces are mixed in with muted-toned pillows and vintage finds. Suzanne worked for ten years as the style editor and producer for Martha Stewart before teaming up with her daughter Lauren to found McGrath Interiors. Their style mixes sophistication with an easy, relaxed approach that’s worth checking out.

LA MODA LUCENTI ITALIAN INTERIORS Lucentiinteriors.com Biagio Lucenti has a lineage in interiors and the design that is an integral part of his DNA. His grandfather and father understood the importance of combining beauty in interiors with pieces that would be functional and stand the test of time. Biagio carried this methodology forward and has created a worldwide resource for architects and builders. He brought his love of Italian modernist design from NYC to Greenwich in October of 2021. Entering the bright and airy space is like being transported to the center of Milan. Biagio’s love of Italian fashion, as well as art and design, translates into his custom millwork and is reinforced by the lines he carries such as Flexform, Flos and Pacini & Cappellini. Biagio and his team relish the client experience and set themselves apart by truly understanding clients’ lifestyles and their vision.

A STORY TO TELL leron.com

Léron Linens is a fourth-generation luxury linen company that knows a thing or two about heritage. Founded in 1910, the company has weathered the Spanish flu, Depression, World War II and now the Covid pandemic. It has serviced a wealth of “who’s-who” in the entertainment industry, royalty and first families like the Kennedys and Reagans. Owners David and Dale Foster are no strangers to custom creations. There’s the client who asked that her guests names (in their own handwriting) be embroidered on her holiday tablecloth at each setting. And the husband who asked to have his wife’s favorite sheet music embroidered on their bedsheets. Léron carries high- quality bed, bath and table linens as well as an assortment of brands that reflect its standards. The New Canaan shop is also excited to bring beautiful comfortable linens to the new ground floor space on 140 Elm Street coming in June.

FEAST FOR THE SENSES

TIMOTHY OULTON

Timothy Oulton will soon bring his British Westerfield sofas to Main Street in Westport. Formerly housed in the Norwalk Lillian August space, this new gallery will be stocked with his eclectic mix of furniture, lighting, home décor and vintage pieces. Oulton looks to create “story filled spaces” that began for him as a boy at his father’s antiques store. His love for the past, combined with an appreciation of today’s modern lifestyle has made him a go-to for his trendy mix of hand-finished leather, ornate lighting and sophisticated fabrics. Guests can enjoy a sip of champagne or tea from vintage English china, while they utilize modern technology like Oulton’s 3D room-planning service. Good Taste

Part of enjoying the good life in Fairfield County is taking advantage of the stellar food scene. Here are a few restaurants, markets and more to add to your agenda by jill johnson mann

I

KYLE NORTON

f you’ve survived the last two years with your taste buds intact, we have found a plethora of places that will excite them. Get out there and try them all. Restaurants could use the boost, and what a pleasure it is to once again soak in the ambience of eateries, enjoy the buzz of conversation and be served artfully prepared cuisine. A sweet potato taco washed down with a “Smokey Lafleur,” an acai bowl or a cold-pressed juice, an omelet and artisan coffee, a wellness shot or superfood latte, brick-oven pizza or dry-aged NY strip steak, local striped bass or duck breast, lobster sliders and caviar, sashimi and a juicy burger, Oreo cheesecake or the best bagel in the world, refreshing kombucha in every flavor or an entire bakery of gluten-free goods—the options are endless. Looking for a view, charm or even an altruistic theme rather than just cuisine. There is an eatery here for every craving. Delivery options await those still attached to their sofas, and caterers are here to revive party planning with real live guests mingling outside their Zoom boxes.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

TACO DADDY/THE LILA ROSE

tacodaddystamford.com

Follow @tacodaddyandthelilarose, and two things will happen: First, the food and cocktail photos will make you salivate and immediately call to make reservations at this popular pair of Stamford restaurants. Second, the captions will charm you and crack you up. It’s clear Taco Daddy is not your father’s Mexican joint. Just take a look at the pic of their mighty Crunchwrap. Traditionalists will find loaded nachos, quesadillas, fajitas, meat and fish tacos (each a work of art), but adventurists may go for a sweet potato taco with yogurt, cilantro and pickled cabbage or a cheeseburger taco complete with caramelized onions and special sauce. If you aren’t in the mood for Chicken Tortilla Soup, Birria Ramen with your choice of protein may fit the bill. Craving a cocktail as the DJ begins to spin? From a Smokey Lafleur (mezcal, tequila, lime, hibiscus flowers) to a Missed My Flight (Mi Campo Reposado tequila, housemade pomegranate grenadine, lime) you’re going to want to try them all and then cap off the night with a Fam Boy or Fruity Pebbles shot. Come back for brunch to soak that up. To put on something flashy and feel like you are in Hollywood, visit The Lila Rose. The decadent decor will lift your spirits—gold trees!—and get you in a pretty-inpink mood, no rose-tinted glasses required. The whimsy carries over into a menu of cheeses, tapas, mains, desserts and chocolates to die for. (The “to die for” is meant to modify all of the aforementioned nouns, not just the one that includes an “eight-pound truffle filled with dark chocolate ganache.”) Unusual, tantalizing specials ensure you will never ever get bored at either of these Towne Street establishments. » MAY 2022 GREENWICH

18-20 GRAB & GO BARVIDA

thebarvida.com

Organic Krush has hit Westport, by way of the Hamptons and Virginia, and it has brought its pesticide-GMO-hormone-free menu of organic food and cold-pressed juices to town. Whether you are on a gluten-free, paleo, vegetarian or regular diet, Organic Krush has delicious options: family dinner specials (BBQ salmon, gluten-free chicken parmesan, steak kabobs, mac & cheese), an irresistible breakfast-all-day menu, made-toorder bowls/wraps/tacos/salads with endless ingredients to pick from, soups (including various bone broths), acai bowls, a kids’ menu and gourmet to-go meals.

This Darien juice bar and cafe promises only 100 percent organic, plant-based products with no sweeteners, chemicals or additives. It’s the kind of clean food a Division 1 athlete like founder and Darien native Brennan Branca considers the optimal fuel for his body: coldpressed juices, superfood smoothies, wellness shots, superfood lattes, acai and smoothie bowls, wraps, rice bowls, salads, toasts, healthy bites (like Paleo Brownies). Barvida takes the doldrums and second-guessing out of healthy eating. Cleanse enthusiasts can choose from one of three programs to reset the body and mind.

ADA’S KITCHEN & COFFEE

heyroost.com

Generations of kids have known Ada’s as the sweetest spot in town. This Riverside institution began as a penny candy store and has been transformed by Greenwich natives Mike and Krista Pietrafeso into an eatery offering breakfast, lunch and to-go dinners, as well as locally roasted artisan coffee. The menu features seasonal food “scratchmade” with fresh ingredients from local farms and purveyors. Salads, sandwiches, omelets, soups, smoothies, kid fare—Ada’s has it all. Top off your meal with an espresso or a tasty treat special, like Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread, or go old school with a handful of “penny” candy.

THE WHEEL & CISCO BREWERS

thevillagewheel.com thevillagestamford.com/cisco-brewers/

The creative juices flow throughout Stamford’s industrial-chic work/play superspace, The Village, and the kitchen of its anchor restaurant, The Wheel, is no exception. Here, fresh ingredients from over forty local farmers, fisherman and purveyors, and from the rooftop garden, are the artistic tools with which chefs and mixologists create masterpieces. The menu covers everything from pizza to a dry-aged NY Strip or vegetarian Cauliflower Steak. East Coast oysters and a lobster roll are fitting choices to complement the waterfront view. The Root Beer Float and Pistachio Cheesecake beckon from the dessert menu, amid other mouth-watering options and fancy digestifs from mezcal to cognac. Nantucket-based Cisco Brewers brings a relaxed vibe to its new CT outpost at The Village, complete with pet-friendly outdoor patio dining, live music and Cisco seasonal brews and cocktails. In the chilly months, Cisco moves inside to The Wheel bar, where cult-favorite beers and a bar menu are available Wednesday to Sunday.

Drawing on his training at the Culinary Institute of America and years of work at top New York City restaurants (Patroon, Lespinasse, The Royalton, Windows on the World) as well as executive chef experience at City Hall, Thom and Terrence Brennan’s Seafood & Chop House, Batt personally designs the menu with each catering client. He seeks out the freshest and finest ingredients and prides himself on continually creating new culinary delights. Chef Batt’s own food brand, Purest Foods, received an Instagram rave from actor/director Ron Howard after a delivery of delectable short ribs cheered him up during Covid quarantine.

Burgers or steak frites await those who prefer the farm to la plage. DIVINA

This modern Italian restaurant in downtown Stamford promises a chic but comfortable ambiance and a creative menu—plus the classic dishes a traditionalist craves and brick-oven pizza. Owner Enzo Bruno is such a believer in what Divina brings to the cuisine scene that he opened a restaurant in the midst of the pandemic. The chef uses a combination of locally sourced and fine imported products, and his dishes are complemented by crafted cocktails and a boutique-style wine list. Divina also has private party space and an outdoor area for open-air happy hours.

L’OSTAL

restaurantlostal.com

In the old language of Occitania, “Ostal” refers to house and the hospitality of welcoming others into your home—and key to that is cooking. Darien’s L’Ostal welcomes diners to savor the cuisines of Southern France and neighboring Italian and Spanish regions. Chef Jared Sippel may be from Iowa, but his time working in a restaurant in Provence bestowed a Frenchman’s mastery of ostal— and cooking skills that took him to Relais & Chateau’s three Michelin star Quince in San Francisco, where he met L’Ostal GM Joe Cracco. Cracco went on to work as sommelier at New York’s Le Bernardin and brings his refined palate and service to this fine Provencal outpost.

Brian Lewis’s Westport restaurant recently opened a location on Greenwich Avenue, where fans will find the same attention to sourcing the best of the season from local farmers and purveyors to create unforgettable, creative American cuisine. Some favorites from the Westport locale will be on the menu, which will feature small and large plates and plenty of new items to discover. Whether indulging in a flowery sashimi starter, a mouthwatering Cottage Burger, scrumptious pancakes or a brunch BLT, decadent lobster or hearty meat dishes, along with the prettiest cocktails, the Cottage always impresses. » THE PORCH BY JULIA D’AGOSTINO; DIVINA AND L’OSTAL, CONTRIBUTED; THE COTTAGE BY LULI BURKE PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE COTTAGE GREENWICH

The Porch at Christie’s in Westport has a three-pronged mission: food, community, purpose. The new owners, longtime Westporters Andrea and Bill Pecoriello, respect the history of the almost 100-yearold gem, which has been a go-to spot through the generations for residents to pick up local food items and students to lick ice cream cones on the porch. The offerings have now expanded to a full menu of sandwiches, salads, burgers and brunch, plus baked goods, ice cream, coffee and even cold platters or hot trays of catered food. The environment favors the gathering of community members—from moms lunching to construction workers grabbing breakfast to clusters of jovial kids hanging out after school. Best of all, the Porch and its Sweet P Bakery are committed to training and employing people with disabilities.

Events, workshops and classes are held year-round, and visitors are welcome daily to visit the library, stroll around the premises and enjoy lunch in the cafe. Lockwood–Mathews Mansion in Norwalk was built in 1864 by LeGrand Lockwood, financier and railroad tycoon. Its architecture displays all of the beauty of the Victorian Era. Whether you are interested in simply touring the mansion or visiting one of the exhibits, your interest is sure to be piqued. The Bendel Mansion located on the grounds of the Stamford Museum & Nature Center was once a private residence. The beautiful and historic building now houses sculptures, art and rotating exhibits, and the Great Hall doubles as a space to host private events. »

Sorokin Gallery Join the Sorokin team for the opening of their new show with works by artist Dario Campanile on Friday, May 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. Campanile’s journey started in Rome, where he was born on April 21, 1948. When he was fourteen, the artist was bedridden for three months, and his father gave him a set of oil paints to cheer him up. He painted his first still life in just a few days. Meetings with Salvador Dali, who coined him the “Roman Master,” would influence his work as a painter. In 1986 Dario was commissioned to redesign and create a new logo for Paramount Pictures. Years later Dario met the Dali Lama at his home in India, where he posed for a portrait that will be exhibited in the project. After decades of painting realism and surrealism, Campanile’s work has evolved into abstract expressionism, which is now the artist’s main focus and passion. 96 Greenwich Avenue. sorokingallery.com CANFIN GALLERY, 39 Main St., Tarrytown, NY, 914-332-4554. canfingallery.com CARAMOOR CENTER FOR MUSIC AND THE ARTS, Girdle Ridge Rd., Katonah, NY, 914-232-1252.
