OCEAN HOUSE

AN EPOCH EXPERIENCE

Ocean House historian Bob Elmer shares the property’s fascinating, centuries-long story

Above: Known as Saint’s Rest, the original Ocean House opened in 1868.
Bob Elmer

Bob Elmer has 77 years of life under his belt, along with a few centuries’ worth of facts in his brain.

For instance, Elmer knows that during the Gilded Age, “The summer balls at Ocean House were the social event of the season,” he says. “The gentlemen always wore red blazers, so every Sunday, I wear a red blazer as an homage to the old days of ‘The Grand Lady.’”

It’s just one of many personal touches that Elmer brings to his work at Ocean House, where he has been part of the fabric for nearly 40 years. First, he was a patron, and then, after the new version of the resort opened in 2010, he became a helpful contributor to the guest experience as a justice of the peace and an elder of his First Congregational Church.

“When the new Ocean House opened in 2010 and brides would suddenly show up saying they wanted to get married, they knew about me,” Elmer says. “That’s how it started.”

His duties evolved into helping out as an emcee for special events, and, as of about five years ago, becoming part of the official team in Guest Relations. Today, Elmer’s title is historian at Ocean House. He gives tours—tailored for VIPs as well as open to the public—that detail the regional and property history.

“We have people who live in Watch Hill and Weekapaug who have summer homes here. They’ll come with houseguests,” he says. “Especially on a rainy day, it’s perfect.”

Elmer’s tour starts with a 15-minute talk that goes all the way back to the 1600s, when Niantic Indians used Watch Hill as a lookout post. He explains how the original Ocean House opened in 1868 and was known as Saint’s Rest—a place where nobody was allowed to drink, dance or play cards. Those miscreants were directed down the way to the sinners’ retreat known as the Larkin House.

Capt. George Nash opened the two-story, wooden-framed hotel that he called Ocean House. At the time, it was the smallest hotel in

property to restore and reopen it. That top-notch restored property is what Elmer leads guests through on his tours today. He shows them fascinating tidbits, such as

how the original elevator car is still part of the experience.

“We go up into the Ocean House Club Room—that’s members-only, but they get to see that,” he says.

The tour begins each day at the Lobby fireplace, marked with the date 1895. One of the elements from the original Ocean House, the fireplace was disassembled and added to the new hotel, stone by stone, in 2010.

October 2024 marked Elmer’s fifth year of leading tours. He says that nowadays, repeat guests call out to him: “Hey, Bob, good to see you! We did the tour two years ago, and it was fantastic!”

What people feel after taking the tour, he says, is that they’ve had an experience of real belonging as guests of the Ocean House—as part of the history that lives on.

“It makes them feel even more special that they have an insider’s view of the history,” he says. “Not everybody does.”

Above left and right:
On Elmer’s tour, guests get to see the members-only Ocean House Club Room, which features self-portraits of famous writers, artists and celebrities.

WESTERLY

Star Treatment

The Café, in downtown Westerly, serves up elevated cuisine and glamour

he Café, next to the United Theatre, has hit its stride.

From a soft opening in 2021, it has emerged as a central and chic gathering spot in downtown Westerly, drawing locals, movieand theatre-goers, (and some well-known musicians) for American coastal comfort food. Resort guests are enjoying it, too.

The atmosphere is terrific, instantly transporting guests to bygone eras of Hollywood glamour and New York sophistication, befitting its setting next to the restored 1926 United Theatre Arts Complex.

An art collection, worthy of a tour around the room, lines the walls. Although the restaurant is large and high-ceilinged, it has many intimate spaces, banquettes and nooks, and the lighting is soft and glowing. A giant mirror above the bar is titled in French bistro fashion, the better to see and be seen. Dining is theatre, after all.

The Café’s has a welcoming humor—the words “Costumes Encouraged” etched on the outside window, framed sketches by Barbara Shermund, The New Yorker cartoonist, and the Tongue Twister section of the cocktail menu (30 Rock fans enjoy The Truly Rural

Juror) are standouts.

The long zinc bar is the place to dine if you like to chat with the bartender about food, cocktails, craft beers and wine. On a recent fall night two regulars took seats at the bar. He ordered the Dipper’s Sipper, an Old Fashioned “washed” with soupy, the local soppressata produced by Dipper’s Packing. She ordered a chenin blanc from the Loire Valley. From cubes of clear artisan ice, to local ingredients and house-infused spirits, the cocktails are thoughtful and well-balanced. The Café also has a dedicated mocktail program. What’s the Buzz About?, an

emulsion of organic pear, green apple shrub, ginger, bitters and a touch of pepper, had us raving that it was the best mocktail we’d ever tried. Smooth, rich, balanced—who needs alcohol?

From the Snacks section, we ordered fried battered artichokes on a creamy mass of aioli flavored with Moroccan red pepper paste pepper. It would have been great on its own, but the deep-fried lemon slices, sweet, sour and crisp, take it to the top. This is the best kind of bar food. I paired it with an El Mariachi, a tequila-based cocktail with grapefruit and lime, dry curacao (French triple sec) and orange bitters.

The couple next to us ordered dinner. The gentleman started his meal with the creamy tomato soup with grilled focaccia and followed it with prosciutto-wrapped meatloaf showered with delicate and crisp onion rings. Beneath the meatloaf, a slice of fried bread absorbs the juices of the meatloaf and the flavors of the red wine sauce, creating a rich, savory bite.

Fingerling potatoes from local Stone Acres Farm, simply roasted, complete the hearty meal. Another popular order is the burger, a flavor bomb of rich meat patty, smoked gouda, bacon-bourbon jam and sautéed mushrooms.

Local seafood is represented by Oysters Morgan, the delicate bivalves gently baked on a bed of spinach, with a touch of pastis, the licorice-flavored herbal liqueur, and topped with crunchy house-made focaccia bread crumbs and Parm. We’re baked oyster connoisseurs, and they made us swoon. Cioppino, the San Francisco-style Italian seafood stew is filled with New England clams, shrimp, scallops and swordfish in a flavorful tomato and herb sauce over housemade fettuccine. Grilled bread perches on the edge of the bowl.

Brunch features a Benedict with housesmoked bacon and house-baked English muffin, special touches that define the experience of dining. We’re always happy to see main courses on a brunch menu, like The Café’s pan-seared salmon with lemon couscous, Mediterranean salsa and arugula salad. Well-composed sandwiches are a joy, and the combo of sliced mortadella, that tender pistachio-flecked bologna, burrata, arugula, piquillo peppers, and tomato chutney on a house-baked hoagie roll, is just that.

Given the level of attention to detail, it’s no surprise to learn that Stephen Corrigan, Director of Operations, and Dan King, Managing Partner of The Café, are restaurant veterans who worked in the Bay Area in the ‘80s and ‘90s. They are steeped in hospitality, the backbone of restaurant culture. “Happy staff equals happy customers,” says Corrigan. Executive Chef Brandon Gale and Sous Chef James Connelly, and an enthusiastic team of mixologists, wine- and brew-spirits-experts, and servers, make up the front and back of house staff.

The Café sends guests out on a food high. For dessert, a gluten-free Sticky Toffee Pudding is moist and delectable as we scooped up spoonfuls of the sauce. Espresso martinis have always seemed more like a dessert cocktail to us, and The Café transforms it into irresistible, not-too-sweet, and beautifully layered affogato-meets-martini. With that, we head out into the night, planning our return to The Café at the United Theatre.

Cocktail Hour

Cocktails at The Café’s fall-winter series feature Dale DeGroff, the former bartender at the Rainbow Room in Manhattan, who revived the art of cocktail making. Known as the “King Cocktail,” DeGroff is author of The Craft of the Cocktail (2002). He’s also a Westerly native and friend of The Café’s managing partners.

On a Tuesday (when the bar is closed) in September, October, November and December, DeGroff leads a class focused on a type of cocktail, its history and lore, ingredients, ratios, and flavor components. It’s not just a demonstration; guests get their hands in, muddling, mixing, stirring, shaking, garnishing, and sipping, savoring and talking about the aromas, flavors, and textures. Light bites are served to cleanse the palate.

Only 20 people are allowed per session, which creates an intimate group at the bar. The class runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Reservations are necessary.

WEEKAPAUG INN

Great ESCAPE

In the season for jackets and down coats, the natural beauty and luxe amenities of Weekapaug Inn make for a memorable getaway

Even though the summer crowds have headed home, beach season isn’t over. As temperatures dip and the landscape changes color, the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing departure from the post-Labor Day routine awaits the savvy traveler. Just a short distance from the largest urban centers in the Northeast, Weekapaug Inn has an incomparable coastal setting, plus luxe accommodations, fine dining and activities to create a perfect mini vacation for anyone in need of a refresh.

Your Personal Cocoon Guest rooms and suites at the Inn are known for their embracing warmth and variety, so

that a family reunion, a couple seeking private time together, girlfriends gathering for some fun and pampering, and solo travelers wanting a restful retreat can each choose a space to match their requirements. Located on the shoreline overlooking Quonochontaug Pond and the ocean beyond, each accommodation has distinctive décor, furnishings and luxury appointments. Each offers beautiful views of the Inn’s unique and dramatic natural surroundings. A self-service snack pantry, featuring 24/7 complimentary treats, is a favorite Inn tradition and just steps away from any guest room.

across from the Inn and fitness center—offer exceptional privacy for couples. Along with the Inn’s four Signature Suites, with wraparound views of the pond, ocean and quiet aesthetic of the Weekapaug community, the suites provide all the comforts of a home base. These expansive spaces are ideal for families and groups of friends; in addition to primary and guest king bedrooms with baths, each one features a full kitchen plus dining area, a den with a pullout queen sleeper sofa, and a gas fireplace. For a completely private getaway, walking a few steps to The Restaurant is not even necessary; the Inn offers extensive in-room dining, as well as the capacity to place and deliver a grocery order for guests in kitchen-equipped suites.

Seasonal Pastimes

While summer has its own delights, Weekapaug offers a different, yet equally enchanting experience in the cooler months. For outdoor

exploration, stop for a moment at the Inn’s Hunter® Boots Borrowing Closet. Here, guests can select weatherproof boots and durable outerwear for complimentary use to enjoy nature walks, birding, or simply hiking around the pond and the gently winding roads nearby. Walk out toward the ocean; in three minutes you can experience the breathtaking beauty of two miles of pristine, white sand beach. On breezy days, the crisp salt air is tangy, and the ocean waves pound out a hypnotic rhythm. Guests will spot sea birds and seals, and without the crowds, it can seem as if nature is putting on a special performance just for you.

Indoors, cool weather means that wood fires are lit in the fireplaces of the Inn’s public rooms. Take a seat, and enjoy the fire’s crackling warmth with a cocktail or glass of wine. Read a book you’ve brought, choose one from the Inn’s library, or work one of the complex and challenging wood PAR puzzles set out for guests’ enjoyment. In the evenings,

put on a jacket and go out to the firepit to enjoy an impromptu dessert of s’mores. These traditional campfire favorites are made and served every night, weather permitting. Don’t forget to look up; the skies above Weekapaug are unpolluted by city light, and on clear nights the stargazing is spectacular. For a closer look at the heavens, use the Inn’s high-powered telescope to focus in on constellations or watch a meteor shower (Geminids appear this year on December 13).

Guests can also indulge with some pampering; the Inn offers complimentary shuttle service to Ocean House’s world-class spa, just a few minutes away—a great activity for couples or a group of friends enjoying a weekend escape.

Above: Holiday décor marks the festive season, indoors and out. Left and below: Fabulous views and the best creature comforts are consistent features of the Inn’s suites.

Sunday evenings in fall and winter bring Sunday Supper to The Restaurant. This threecourse meal, served family style, captures the warmth and comfort that are hallmarks of the Inn experience. It’s a popular weekly event among guests and members of the surrounding community.

The Holidays and Beyond

Kicking off with a family style Thanksgiving feast in The Restaurant, holidays at the Inn are something special, with beautifully decorated trees in the indoor public spaces and scattered across the lawn. There are plenty of activities to mark this time of year, including a children’s

holiday party with Santa, wreath decorating workshops for grownups, and Weekapaug’s traditional Christmas Eve Feast of the Seven Fishes dinner. December is a magical time for an Inn stay; since holiday decorations also proliferate in neighboring communities, guests can borrow one of the Inn’s Volvo SUVs and take a tour to see some of the area’s magical light displays.

On weekend evenings, the lounge chairs that surround the pool in summer transform into cozy outdoor seating for a big-screen Cinema Under the Stars, the Inn’s unique analog to the outdoor movie experience of generations past. Snuggle under a heated blanket and let a

server take your order for hot cocoa, thermos cocktails and traditional drive-in fare: hot dogs, burgers and popcorn are on the menu. Throughout December, Fridays are date nights, with grown-up films; on Saturday, it’s family night, with such offerings as Elf and The Polar Express.

The holidays conclude with a special New Year’s Eve dinner, but the magic continues. Snowshoers may relish touring across a frozen snow-covered beach, and other cold-weather fans will be energized by a walk along quiet local lanes. But all Inn guests can enjoy the simple pleasures of relaxing in comfort, dining on wonderful meals, and watching the snow fall from their favorite spot indoors. Weekapaug Inn is the perfect place to enjoy an escape from the everyday.

WEEKAPAUG INN

Culinary Traditions

Executive Chef expands Sunday Suppers and adds Pasta Making Lunches at the Inn

There’s a new fall-winter tradition at Weekapaug Inn.

For the last two winters, Executive Chef Andrew Brooks has been cooking Sunday Suppers. Served in the Inn’s serene dining room, with the scent of a wood fire, the meal begins with a complimentary glass of wine, and a board of locally baked bread and Vermont

Creamery butter, followed by a three-course, family-style meal. Inn guests and locals have discovered it’s a cozy and delicious way to end the week.

“Sunday Suppers have big local appeal,” says Chef Andrew. “It’s a great way to get the people from nearby communities here and to remind them The Restaurant isn’t just for hotel guests. Sunday Suppers are the perfect meal to

share—for families or for date night.”

Guests pass a bowl of the chef’s seasonal salad around the table, serving themselves and each other. Servers set platters of main courses on the table, which may include roasted chicken with Rhode Island mushroom sauce, roasted salmon with lemon-caper beurre blanc, and housemade pasta with pomodoro sauce showered with grated Parmesan. vegetables and garlic-whipped potatoes are the side dishes. The menus may vary weekly, as well as local ingredients in salads and vegetable sides, to provide the very best of what’s in season.

For dessert, the Weekapaug’s classic chocolate chip cookie is baked in a skillet pan and served with house-spun vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel sauce.

Sunday Suppers became popular with so many regulars that it was extended to April last

year, and Chef Andrew says, “We’ll run it as far into the spring season as possible.”

Although Chef Andrew has been at the helm of the Weekapaug Inn’s kitchen for three years, he feels like he’s just getting started. Here’s another culinary tradition: Beginning in January, Chef Andrew is offering Chef’s Pasta Making Lunches on Saturdays.

“I teach the group how to make the dough, and we roll it out together. A server is pouring wine, and I show them how to make the sauce, and I cook the lunch. It’s very intimate. It’s usually eight people, and we sit around the table and have lunch.”

Each week the chef makes a new type of pasta and pairs it with the appropriate sauce, fettucine and tomatoes, linguine and clams, pappardelle and mushrooms. The class runs for two hours, but once the guests get talking and meeting new friends, the afternoon can extend as guests order a final glass of wine.

Bringing People Together

Two couples celebrate weddings that make their guests feel special, too

e’ve all been to those weddings (you know the ones) where somebody forgot to order the fun. Sure, people smile for the photos, but as soon as the timing is considered decent, guests try to make a graceful exit.

Two couples who got married recently at the Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn—Kristen Merlo and John Reichl, and Adriana and Tom Parisi—ensured not only that they had wonderful days to remember, but also that their guests felt special, too.

“That was a big thing,” Adriana says. “At Weekapaug, I think the experience of the exclusivity with your close friends and family is a really special touch. You can go down to the restaurant, and it’s just you and your friends and family having breakfast.”

At Ocean House, John says, the property became a backdrop for all kinds of uniquely entertaining experiences. “It was fun to mingle in a different way than you would usually arrive at a wedding,” he says. “It set the tone that it would be a weekend of fun,

Kristen Merlo and John Reichl planned activities inspired by the Ocean House property Adriana and Tom Parisi celebrated a three-day wedding weekend at Weekapaug Inn.

KRISTEN MERLO AND JOHN REICHL images by RYAN RAY

When Kristen and John decide to make an experience memorable, they swing for the fences.

It started with John’s proposal, which was an homage to Kristen’s love for the Boston Red Sox. With him fresh out of Harvard Business School and her working in digital marketing for American Express, he scooped her up in early 2023, asked her to wear a blindfold, and led her to what she assumed, from the sounds, was a sports bar in Boston.

She was actually in Fenway Park. Upon the Green Monster, the staff had spelled out: “Marry Me Kristen?” Her parents, and his, were waiting in the tunnel for a celebratory dinner.

Topping that moment might seem tough, but the couple hit another home run at Ocean House in June 2024. They invited wedding guests from Wednesday through Sunday, and they showcased the property in fun ways that

Below: Throughout the wedding festivities, the couple hosted a bridesmaids’ garden party, croquet social, boardwalk games and more.

tapped into the Ocean House heritage.

There was the family boat ride. The rehearsal on the verandah with ocean views. The bridesmaids’ lunch was a garden party with art, followed by a croquet social with everyone wearing white.

“We certainly have some competitive friends and family,” John says. “Even after it ended, they were trying to get their last shot in.”

On Friday night, they set up a vintage boardwalk on the beach. “We had a barbershop quartet that was singing and welcoming them,” Kristen says. “On the boardwalk, we had a ton of food stations with lobster rolls, clam chowder, funnel cake, and then games like a High Strike, a ring toss, a golf hole-in-one.”

Guests competed for prizes—and “these were prizes that you actually wanted,” John says. “We had Ocean House robes, some handblown glass from Simon Pearce. We had, from the

Faribault woolen mill, woolen blankets from my Minnesota heritage.”

The ceremony was Saturday, after a private walk on the beach with their goldendoodle, Bella. Kristen had her grand entrance on the staircase under a clear blue sky. Cocktail hour was on the Seaside Terrace.

“Then we moved to the lawn in the back of the hotel, and that’s where we had our tent,” Kristen says. “It was a big reveal. They had been putting it up for three days.”

The after party was in Bemelmans Gallery, decked out as an old-time speakeasy. “They had set it up with velvet curtains, a 1930s vintage band, cocktails, special martinis, little pastries and desserts, candy cigarettes—it was a very fun way for people to wind up the evening,” Kristen says. “That’s what we loved about the property,” John adds. “You could really bring these ideas to life.”

ADRIANA DESTEFANIS AND TOM PARISI images by

Tom wasn’t sure that Adriana was going to say yes when he decided to propose. They’d been dating since summer 2020, after meeting among friends on Long Island, New York. Two years later, they vacationed in Sea Island, Georgia.

“It was the second night,” says Tom, who works in investment banking. “We took a river cruise, and at the end of the cruise, we took a walk, and I proposed. I was hoping she was going to say yes, and I definitely surprised her, but it was a good surprise.”

The moment was private—which is how they prefer things. For their wedding, the private feeling the Weekapaug Inn allows was exactly what they wanted.

Their event was in October 2023. Guests were welcomed with passed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the MeetingHouse, and then stayed

for the three-day weekend with the property all to themselves. Everyone could relax and have fun, and then be amazed when they entered the tent for the big party.

“We really wanted it to be an elevated tent experience,” Adriana says. “It was luxurious and beautiful on the inside with a floor, flowers hanging from the ceiling, lighting—I would call it New England chic. We wanted people to walk into the tent and think, ‘Wow, this is really something.’”

Adriana especially loved having only their friends and family on the property.

“If somebody walked down the hall, they went to my wedding. It wasn’t like, ‘Who is this person?’ It was a relief. You knew everyone,” she says. “It’s fun because you go to the bar, and everyone’s saying, ‘How do you know the bride? How do you know

the groom?’”

The level of service, Tom and Adriana add, also helped everyone feel special.

“It was almost like being at a restaurant,” she says. “It wasn’t like a wedding where the food gets bussed out and it’s cold and you have to wait in line for a drink. The servers wore light green ties to match my wedding colors. They were on it. People felt like they were out to a great dinner.”

The 14-person band cranked out tune after tune, keeping everyone happy for hours.

“Our whole thing was really to get to enjoy each other,” Tom says. “That’s probably one of the only times you can have all your family and friends in the same room. It was high-class service, high-class food, and just a really cool experience that allowed everybody to enjoy themselves.”

Personal Touch

To make their weddings unique, each couple added their own creative spin

DESIGN ELEMENTS

For their fall wedding, the Parisis wanted an “elevated tent experience” with luxurious flowers, dramatic lighting and a “New England chic” feel. Even the servers added to theme, wearing light green ties to match the wedding colors. Adriana and Tom’s monogram was part of the design scheme, with the largest “AT” displayed on the dance floor.

OCEAN HOUSE

VINTAGE BOARDWALK

Ocean House beach was reimagined as an old-school boardwalk for Kristen Merlo and John Reichl’s wedding weekend. Guests, who were greeted by a barbershop quartet, strolled along the beach and sampled everything from lobster rolls and clam chowder to burgers and funnel cake. Prizes such as plush resort robes, blown glass and woolen blankets were awarded to the winners of ring toss, a golf hole-in-one and other traditional carnival games.

OCEAN HOUSE

COTTAGE CHARM

During the holiday season and beyond, experience the comfort of a private home with exclusive resort access

cean House appreciates that during the holiday season, “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and goodhumour”—as Charles Dickens once intimated in A Christmas Carol. And this winter, between the months of December and February, both (and more) can be experienced, warmly, while in residence at one of the beach homes in the Ocean House Cottage Collection. Simply picture a festive evening with your nearest and dearest ’round a crackling fire.

Ocean House’s Cottage Collection is home to luxurious residences, ranging in size from three bedrooms, accommodating up to eight guests, to nine bedrooms, accommodating up to 18. Each is individually designed with a casual, coastal charm that embraces the aesthetic of Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

One of the most iconic choices in the Cottage Collection is THE OCEANIC (formerly, the historic “House on the Hill”).

This impressive cottage—situated on a scenic perch, with surrounding views of the Atlantic Ocean and Ocean House—has been modernized to feature nine bedrooms and 11 bathrooms across more than 10,000 square feet. Or, alternatively, there is the airy and chic but more intimate INTERMARE (with three bedrooms), SUNSET COVE (with five bedrooms), or INTERCREST (with seven bedrooms) for larger groups.

All these charming, comfortable homes are seaside and sensational—and fully functional, boasting dining and living areas as well as kitchens.

Snug in these coastal chalets, one is invited to make memories with family and friends. The Cottage Concierge is on call to enhance the experience, from multi-generational gatherings

During this time, there is a festive series of events that includes caroling and tree-lighting (on November 30) and Sunday brunches with Santa Claus throughout December. Of course, the

Remember, the merriment continues beyond the holidays.

In the cold months before spring, the seaside is a lovely, serene destination for spending time with loved ones. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a brisk walk on the beach followed by a warm drink. “It’s for those just looking to relax and unwind,” says César Arriaga, Director of Residence for Ocean House Collection.

“You can have elegant downtime and vacation in your cozy home but with culinary and art experiences and pure luxury with your dedicated concierge.”

The Cottage Collection delivers the comfort and seclusion of a private home but with the amenities of a five-star resort.

“The benefit of choosing a cottage in Watch Hill over a rental in, say, the Hamptons or Cape Cod and over any sort of rental, regardless of location, is it provides full access to the Ocean House resort,” says Arriaga. “Instead of having a self-contained vacation experience, you come to Ocean House for all of your dining, and you can enjoy the spa at Ocean House and the beach at Ocean House. And then your cottage can be your homebase for the week.”
