JULY/AUGUST 2023 / DONNA MOFFLYOF SURVIVING SUMMER SPORTS
It’s finally the season for fun in the sun. Fun? Well, most of the time, but I’ve never won any gold medals in the athletic arena. Admittedly, I did pretty well swimming. Diving, too, as long as it was backwards, so I couldn’t see the water. At Camp Wabasso, I did a whole lot better hitting a bull’s eye with a bow and arrow than I’d do later hitting a clay pigeon with a shotgun. And I could paddle my own canoe.
But it was always hard to keep up with Jack. Someday I’ll write a book called I Married a Jock.
Waterskiing: Tried it once—on Lake Winnipesaukee. Holding the towrope, I slid from the dock into the waist-deep water, but the back of my bathing suit got hooked on a nail, and there I hung—my legs and skis up under the dock and me paddling frantically in front to keep from drowning. I did finally get upright on the things, but got cocky trying to cross the wake, wiped out and never got up again.
Fly-fishing: Another one-shot deal—in Scotland with a ghillie. By a private pond well-stocked with big fat trout. I couldn’t miss, right? Wrong. Every time I cast, my line would get caught on the wire fence behind me.
Sailing: In Bermuda, Jack put me at the tiller of a Sunfish in Great Sound for a friendly race against Mary Stuart and Bill Crane. Then, by pre-arrangement, he managed to slide off my boat onto theirs—leaving me to master the art of the solo sail. Except a huge ferry full of sightseers was bearing down on me, so I headed for shore—remembering to pull up the centerboard but forgetting to release whatever to let the sail luff. So the boat and I plowed up full tilt onto the sand at Cambridge Beaches, scattering a covey of elderly sunbathers.
Golf: I like golf. I play it one week every year at Basin Harbor in Vermont. Once my
daughter-in-love Elena and I were playing as a twosome just ahead of our husbands. It was such a hot, sticky day that when I bent over to get my ball out of the cup, my pants split right up the back. Fortunately, in my golf bag I had a windbreaker to tie around my waist. Observing from afar, Jack turned to Jonathan and said: “Well, there goes your mother—overdressed again!” There ain’t no justice.
Riding: Honestly, I much prefer horses on a racetrack than under me, ever since Smokey bit me in my ten-year-old butt as I tried to mount him on my first day at camp. But decades later in Wyoming, I had to set a good example for our teenaged kids. R Lazy S Ranch paired me with an old quarter horse named Chunky, and the extent of my riding was a daily tiptoe through the woods with a wrangler and a ninety-year-old psychiatrist from Arizona. But the last day, spying his favorite cowboy just back from a trip, Chunky took off like a shot across a massive field to greet him— with me on top. That was it.
Biking: During Race Week, we ladies rented bikes to explore Block Island. Pedaling as hard as I could—I’ve never mastered more than three gears—we headed up a long, steep hill to the beekeeper’s house. I felt very smug when I noticed Nancy Vaughn struggling to keep up— Nancy, who walked miles around Riverside and could ski down any mountain. But my smugitude was short-lived. She had a flat tire.
Tennis: I’ve always enjoyed tennis, except for the hot sticky day I rushed off to a game in Binney Park without taking time to change into suitable attire. Lesson learned: Never play tennis in your panty girdle. It gets too itchy.
Question: Am I too old and wise to take up pickleball? G

Be Well
by michelleAs we seek calm in our chaotic day-to-day lives, the concept of wellness has become increasingly more popular. And with the opening of The Well in Old Greenwich, our town now has a one-stop shop for rejuvenation and relaxation. The state-of-the-art studio features a range of modern and holistic services to support physical and mental wellness. From the invigorating heat of the Infrared Sauna to the compression benefits of the Ballancer Pro to the calorie and cellulite burning effects of an Infrared Body Wrap, The Well offers everything you need to help you feel your best.
Guests can take wellness to the next level with Red Light Therapy, which uses the power of light to boost your skin’s natural healing process. Or try Normatec compression, which helps improve circulation and reduce soreness. For an extra boost of energy, try Bemer therapy, a process that utilizes electromagnetic fields to promote optimal blood flow.
Founder Nina Baker spent years in the fashion business and owned the clothing store Saturnia, that was located on Lewis Street. Just before the pandemic, she experienced a lifealtering event that led her in search of holistic modalities to help her heal, physically and mentally. It started with cryotherapy, but along the way she discovered other modalities that when done together made her feel healthy and whole.
Baker says, “I’ve lived in Old Greenwich for many years and recognized the need for a modern wellness space to restore and heal. At The Well Greenwich, we believe that wellness is more than just physical health. It’s about feeling good inside and out. That’s why we’ve created a peaceful and serene environment for you to unwind in, surrounded by calming colors and soothing scents, to help you experience the ultimate in wellness and relaxation.”

These guys hit the court for FUN, COMARADERIE AND SOME COMPETITIVE PLAY—but they also use the sport they love to give back in wonderful ways
by valerie foster • photography by venera alexandrovaLike its members, the GOOD OLD BOYS TENNIS ASSOCIATION—GOBs to its members—knows the power of sustainability. It’s celebrating its fortieth anniversary this year. GOBs is a group of 125 tennis loving, very active, retired or soon-to-be-retired men. They represent eighteen Fairfield County clubs, with seventy-six play dates scheduled from April through mid-October. At the helm is GOB president Jim McGuire, a member of the Milbrook Club.
“The common denominator we all share is a love for tennis and staying fit,” McGuire says. “It’s wonderful to get up every day, enjoy your time and find interesting ways to fill your days. The comaraderie we share is good for our mental health and an outlet for some very interesting exchanges.” Consider Roy Anderson, a member of the Tokeneke Club of Darien, who has been retired for almost thirty years. Never one to sit home all day, he competed in many tennis tournaments pre-Covid, but during the pandemic

THE WORLD’S #1 IN ORTHOPEDICS TEAMS UP WI TH STAMFORD HEALTH
HSS, the world's #1 in orthopedics according to Newsweek, is proud to team up with Stamford Health to bring the most comprehensive musculoskeletal care to Connecticut. Our industry-leading experts are here for you from diagnosis, non-surgical and surgical orthopedic treatment options, through post-operative care. Now you can get back to moving better and doing what you love sooner.
GOB
THE ORIGINAL FOURSOME
GOBs began in 1983, when the late Alex Reddin, a competitive tennis player and the club champion at Milbrook, was newly retired. He had launched the Fairfield County Tennis League (FCTL) in 1966, a night league for businessmen to play competitive tennis. Retired, he found himself wanting to play tennis during the day but was having trouble finding men his age, with his tennis ability. He pitched the concept of GOBs to several Fairfield County clubs. The first year there were thirteen clubs and thirty-nine men involved.
Today the group comprises national, county and club champions, as well as United States Tennis Association and FCTL participants.
Now, forty years later, McGuire says that the group, with its talent pool of successful executives, recognized their ability to make a difference. They have teamed up with Grassroots Tennis & Education, an organization that helps youth in Norwalk and Stamford build a foundation for success on the tennis court, in the classroom and in life. Grassroots was founded in 1995 by recently deceased GOBs’ member Art Goldblatt.
David Kimani, acting director of Grassroots, says: “GOBs provides an experiential learning opportunity for our youth to further grow and develop life skills through a mutual passion of playing tennis. It is a memory that will last forever, which may influence the future directions of participants.”
Anderson has been involved with Grassroots since its beginning in 1995 and thinks the synergy between the two organizations truly makes an impression on the kids.
many tournaments were put on hold. He was aware of GOBs but three years ago decided to find out more—and ended up joining the group.
“I wasn’t sitting home during Covid, and that was wonderful,” he says.“Older guys have different levels of play, and what was really attractive to me is that GOBs puts the better players together. Many of the players are quite good, and I am always able to get good games.”
“The kids see old guys playing tennis, and that encourages them to continue to play beyond high school and college,” he says. “Tennis is a lifetime sport, and they learn that it is something they can continue playing their whole life. Some of these kids are really good, and there will be some interesting games.”
Adds McGuire: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to expose them to retired executives in a relaxed atmosphere, at a local club. And it’s an opportunity for us to raise some money for a very worthwhile organization.”

SNEAK PEAK
WHEN YOU THINK ITALY, YOU MAY NOT THINK SKIING. YOU WILL NOW. AND IT'S TIME TO START PLANNING
Italy is in the middle of its hot-girl summer. Hotels are overflowing with Aperol Spritz-sipping tourists living la dolce vita. But as the Game of Thrones saying goes, winter is coming. There’s always a tipping point for the new “it” destinations, and the Dolomite mountains in Cortina, Italy, are about to hit theirs. Europeans have been skiing this part of the Alps for decades. Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, and James Bond fictionally drove his winter-equipped white Lotus Esprit Turbo down the slopes in The Spy Who Loved Me.
The Dolomites take their name from the carbonate rock of the same name. At dawn and dusk, the mountains are awash in a fiery pink so stunning the Italians have created legends and folk stories about the enrosadira, the alpenglow. This unexpected phenomenon is exclusive to the Dolomites and reason enough to plan a visit.
BEFORE & AFTER
Madonna di Campiglio manages to be simultaneously one of the largest ski resorts in Italy in terms of skiable area and one of the least spoiled. The lifts rise from the picturesque village on the Val di
Sole—the sunny valley—accessing nearly 100 miles of pistes.
Book your stay at Lefay Resort and Spa Dolomiti. The staff will make skiing effortless. The only thing they could do to make it easier would be to carry you down the pistes. Ski rentals are on the property; your gear is stored in heated lockers overnight; and you’ll be whisked to the lift, just five minutes away. Oh, and they’ll print your lift ticket for you. True luxury is a world in which you never stand in line.
When you return from a less than grueling day on the slopes, the fever dream of a spa is waiting. The spa covers four levels and is over 53,000 square feet. That’s ten football fields of salt caves, saunas and sprawling jacuzzis. Kids are welcome at the family pool,
Lefay Resort
and everyone will want to swim through the sliding glass doors to the toasty outdoor pool with a heated floor and expansive view of the mountains. This is the best place to enjoy the enrosadira
You’ll want to book your trip before they televise the 2026 Winter Olympic downhill events from Cortina. The Dolomites will suddenly be on everyone’s bucket list. Part of the massive Dolomiti Superski, Cortina connects skiers and riders to nearly 750 miles of slopes.
Just two hours from Venice, Cortina isn’t remote—though the towering ring of surrounding Dolomites might make it feel otherwise. And there’s a low-key vibe that’s a far cry from the see-and-be-seen culture of other comparable European ski towns. (I’m looking at you, France.)
HITTING THE SLOPES IN ITALY
They aren’t runs. They are pistes. There are no green runs. The beginner runs are also called “nursery hills” and are blue. The intermediate level is red and advanced is black.
Italians like their runs like they like their hair, perfectly groomed.
Skiing is more a glamorous pastime than a rigorous sport. So clocking your speed will make you look intensely American. This observation is based on firsthand knowledge.
U.S. SKIING JAN 11–15, 2024
SKIING JAN 11–15, 2024
Skiing has a well-earned reputation for being the sport of the swell set. Skiing the Alps even more so. Images of trust fund babies clad in Gorsuch sipping champagne come to mind. But what if skiing in the Alps is less expensive than hitting Utah or Colorado, including airfare? Lift tickets at most American resorts exceed $200 per day. Lunchtime feels like a sweaty game of musical chairs played in clunky boots with trays of overpriced fried food. Here’s the math.

The world of Alice Temperley is full-blown fantasy: bold prints, boho styling and luxe velvets in a kaleidoscope of jewel tones. And now she’s bringing her romantic vision to Romo, with help from the studio’s design director, Emily Mould and the introduction of Temperley London x Romo. From dramatic wallcoverings to exquisite upholstery options, the selection of painted patterns and intricate embroideries encourages artful printmixing, where oversized florals work with animal spots and swirling marble motifs meet blooming palms. Add whimsical brush fringe and key tassels for even more embellishment. “More is more” is your mantra here. The idea is to indulge in your playful side, whether or not you’re dressing a historied country house or a London flat. Mould likens her reaction to the finished product to “being a child in a sweet shop, seeing all these beautiful fabrics and intricate details that had been carefully hand stitched.” Get lost in all the eye-candy at Schwartz Design Showroom in Stamford and at romo.com.

Oomph is no stranger to color. Devotees and designers rely on the Greenwich-based brand for a playful pop, whether it’s on one of its signature Tini Tables or from a bespoke one-of-a-kind piece. With its newest Wave Collection, Oomph is offering the chance to utilize even more options from the color wheel. Designer PATRICK MELE (and vintage finds) to Black Rock
Interior designer Patrick Mele has reinvigorated homes from London to New York City to Greenwich with his singular style of rich colors, bold, intricate patterns and enchanting, often unexpected textures. His eponymous brand’s second retail and office location is now open in Black Rock, Fairfield County’s up-and-coming hotspot of art, culture, music, food and more.
“Like so many, I found myself part of the exodus from NYC during the early days of the pandemic. After taking the plunge to purchase my first home along the water’s edge in Black Rock in 2019, it seemed a natural progression to anchor my design business closer to home,” says Mele.
And lucky him: The largest retail space in the heart of Black Rock became available one year later. Situated next door to the vibrantly reimagined Park City Music Hall, the historic Black Rock Department Store location dates from the 1950s and has all the right elements: tons of natural light, wood floors, an original tin ceiling and exposed brick walls.
“It felt like the kind of raw, blankcanvas-gallery-space that’s so hard to come by these days,” he says. Mele’s Black Rock Department Store combines vintage and antique furniture, clothing by collector Carol Santini, Turkish and Moroccan rugs from Wendy Cooper, lighting, art accessories and
then some. And the inventory, set in over two thousand square feet, is constantly growing with new finds you can discover weekly. In the future, Mele and his team hope to host art shows and partner with local growers to host a seasonal farmers markets. “We’re excited to be a part of a small city undergoing a rebirth. Bridgeport, and in particular Black Rock, is a hub for artists, foodies, creatives and makers. Take a ride and come visit!”

money matters
BY CAROL LEONETTI DANNHAUSERSECOND HOME SMARTS
Julie Walsh, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty Westport, can help you figure out the answer. Or at least ask yourself the right questions. Often, deciding whether to buy or to rent a vacation home comes down to dollars and sense, versus dollars and cents.
perhaps you have a family connection there or some other emotional draw.
Temperatures are heating up. Is your desire to get out of town climbing as well?
If so, where to this year? A new locale you haven’t explored before, or the same summer spot your family or friends flock to each year? If it’s the latter, someone in your group will no doubt make that annual pronouncement: “Wouldn’t it be great to buy a place here?”
Would it?
“Is it worth it financially to buy a vacation home? People say, ‘It’s okay, because I can always sell it,’ but markets change all the time when it comes to buying and selling a home. Instead, you have to ask yourself, ‘Why do I like coming there? Why am I renting? Why do I want to buy?’” That bit of soul searching can help clarify what you decide, Walsh says.
If your summer plans are the same this year—to return to the same spot as last year and years past with your children or your partner—then buying a place there might seem like the right answer, especially if you can just jump in the car and be there in a couple of hours. You know and like the area,
SUMMER SWAP
To make sure you should buy, “you have to try living there,” Walsh says. Rent for a long term and do some fact-finding while you’re there. “You have to ask every question. Ask the building inspectors, is any new construction going on? If you’re near the water, when was the last disaster? What does it cost to insure? What about hurricanes? What were the snow levels?” Even if you can’t stay there due to work or school, you’ll realize how often you and your loved ones want to dash off there, versus somewhere else. And think long-term. Will the house be as attractive as you, your partner and your children age?
Walsh, a native of Australia who lives in Westport, speaks from experience. Here in the United States, her family returned to their happy places—Lake Placid and the Virgin Islands—with regularity. Then their son discovered Jackson Hole,
a destination the whole family now loves. Instead of buying a place there to ski, Walsh’s son rents a big house for a month and everybody chips in. That gets him an extended stay in a beautiful place without having to be a homeowner. “People in his age group would rather be able to do an Airbnb and still have money in their pocket,” she says.
If you do decide to buy, do the math. Thanks to inflation, the twenty-year fixed mortgage rate doubled in 2022 and has zigged and zagged this year. Tack on a half to one percent more for a mortgage for a vacation home. Plus, you’ll need at least a 10 percent downpayment to qualify, as loans for a second home are riskier than for a main residence. Paying the mortgage, utilities, taxes, insurance, repairs, maintenance and the like happens year-round, whether you occupy the home or not. And don’t forget to add in the cost of those fun vacationy things that appealed to you in the first place.
Get this, lower Fairfield County homeowners: We’re living in a summer hot spot! The very homes that we’re escaping fetch handsome rental fees from out-of-towners, Walsh says. “Because of the nature of Fairfield County, you’ve got everything here at your doorstep.” This includes myriad recreational options on the shoreline and in the woods, summer camps for kids, music venues in cities and towns, and New York City but a train ride away. As eager as we might be to explore someplace new, someone is just as eager to come here. Many New Yorkers don’t blink at paying $25,000 to $30,000 a month in the summertime for a down-County home with a pool, Walsh reports. And travelers from abroad might happily trade a month in their home in Tuscany or the south of France for a month in yours.

The Bezos Blueprint: Communication Secrets of the World’s Greatest Salesman
CARMINE GALLO
Regardless of how you feel about Amazon, Jeff Bezos has revolutionized retail, and his communication strategies are a roadmap for how to present ideas.
Author Carmine Gallo condenses and highlights the key tools that Bezos and
his team at Amazon use to communicate in-house—tools that are all highly adaptable for everyday life. Filled with examples of how a variety of executives have utilized these approaches, this book is not a Bezos biography, but rather a blueprint of how Amazon uses specific communications tactics for success. Be sure to take notes, as the book contains drills to allow readers to practice these skills.
Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time and Focus on What Matters Most CASSIE HOLMES
Whether you’re a corporate titan, busy volunteer or stay-athome parent, this book is packed with practical ideas and strategies to build a more satisfying life. Award-winning professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, author Cassie Holmes, provides concepts and tools (such as

She includes simple ideas that are easy to apply, such as time blocking to avoid over scheduling. I recommend reading it on a tablet or with a phone handy to take pictures of some of the clever worksheets.
Smart Brevity: The Power of Saying More with Less JIM VANDEHEI, MIKE ALLEN AND ROY SCHWARTZ
This book is as applicable to business executives as it is to class moms. Communicating concisely takes practice. For all those parents who
feel like their family doesn't read texts or emails, Smart Brevity helps you see things from the readers perspective in order to engage your audience. You don’t have to run a Fortune 500 company to benefit from the practical strategies on how to get your ideas across.

From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life
ARTHUR BROOKS
Please take a deep breath when I tell you that the average life expectancy is seventysix years. So that means your second half of life technically begins at thirty-eight. (Although that's hard to imagine, as you may be still changing diapers at thirty-eight.) Now that you’ve digested that bracing thought, don’t be put off by the title of this book. Whether you’re getting your kids into school or out of the
house or pondering choices regarding your next decade, this thought-provoking book helps readers take stock of their lives and plan for a future filled with purpose and enjoyment. Brooks assures us that, yes, our best days are quite possibly ahead of us. But that requires some planning. He presents scientific data and research about aging and provides practical strategies for creating meaning, purpose and happiness.
Summer is a great time to diversify how you read. Even if you’re committed to flipping the pages of a physical book, there are times the electronic side can come in handy. If you’re traveling, you’ll save weight and space. And tablet reading is great for nonfiction books so you can screenshot pages and passages to keep and share. Audio books can also make

If you have children— whether they are in their twenties or someday will be—this thought-provoking book by psychologist Meg Jay should be on your reading list. Drawing on her academic and private practice work, she challenges the oftbelieved concept that
our twenties is an insignificant decade. Compassionate and inspirational, it is not meant to evoke anxiety but rather remind readers that decisions made in one’s twenties regarding education, career and relationships set the foundation for later decades when choices become more limited. Originally written in 2013, it was revised in 2021 to include contemporary topics like online dating.

When your children are babies, it can feel natural to use silly voices to get them interested in books. Dav Pilkey, author of the blockbuster Dog Man and Captain Underpants series, suggests continuing the tradition even as kids get a little older. “Take on the voice and characteristic of the character—the kids will get into it more,” he says. Putting in the extra effort (and letting yourself have fun with the material) can make books seem less like work and more like play.
Greenwich will light up the night to celebrate our country’s birthday on Saturday, July 1. The firework displays will take place at both Binney Park and Tod’s Pont at dusk. Regular entry rules for Tod’s Point apply. Vehicular access to the Point closes at 8 p.m. or earlier, if parking capacity is reached.

Give Them a Choice
Bringing young readers to the library or a local bookstore and letting them choose a book is a great way to get them into reading. Avoid making judgements about their reading choices. It’s all about getting them interested in the written word. “The more ownership they feel for what they’re reading, the stronger the connection will be,” says Michael Northrop, New York Times bestselling author of teen and tween literature. “Let them read what they want to read. Even if it may not look like great literature to you, or even literature at all,” he says, “you never know what they might pick up next.”
Show Don’t Tell
Looking at social media might be cathartic at the end of the day (guilty as charged!), but step away from scrolling to show your child that you love reading, too. “If you can read together or they can see you reading, that’s a great thing,” says Pilkey. Maybe you read the paper on the couch while they read a book for school, or maybe you both make a pick from the library for bedtime reading. Whatever it is, don’t underestimate the power of your example.
Screen the Screens
As adults, Kindles, iPads
and even phones can be a convenient way to read, but you may want to rethink that for the kiddos. “For young kids, it’s important to feel the pages, to turn the pages and connect with the ideas inside a book. But I don’t think a kid is going to see a difference in you reading a Kindle or paperback,” says Jeff Kinney, author of the famed Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Make sure you tell them, “I’m reading my book now” or “I’m reading the Wall Street Journal,” so they don’t think you’re texting or on social media. G

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant in Connecticut is located in Greenwich, and it offers a worldly adventure for food lovers. Start with shared plates at the communal table, or pull up a seat at the handsome bar—this is a friendly and see-and-be-seen approach to dining out. Now, let's talk about food: The menu is the best of Latin flavors for today, such as Shrimp Ceviche in Agua Diablo, Warm White Asparagus in a jalapeño-coriander vinaigrette, crispy fish taco with chipotle mayo, pickled cabbage, apples and habenero with mint, and (for healthy appetities) perhaps the Black Sea Bass with crispy potatoes and red chili lime sauce or just a whole grilled lobster with smoked chile butter.

Best Mexican LA TAQUERIA
Everybody (and we think we mean this literally) loves Mexican food. High-end to street food, it's all good in its own way. But it also makes it a challenge to stand out among the competition, which is just what La Taqueria did. When asked to choose a favorite, our voters were loud and clear: La Taqueria. Chef and owner Dennis Lake found the sweet spot, offering Mexican food in a casual space that feels more like you've happened upon a local haunt. Part of the secret must be in the food, such as (prepare yourself) the Grilled Chicken Burrito, with rice, beans, guacamole, lettuce, pico and rajas, salsa crema and cheese all bundled up in a chewy flour tortilla (go ahead, grab a napkin). As for tacos, choose from Beef Picadillo with Cojita cheese, cilantro and onion, or beerbattered Cod with Chipotle crema, red cabbage and cilantro. We suggest eating in, but this friendly place even delivers.
Best Mediterranean LAYLA'S FALAFEL
Some days you find yourself running around completing errands and knocking to-do's off the endless list when you suddenly realize that you are starving—and you need food now. That's when you take our voters' advice and head over to Layla's. Drop in just as you are and have your choice of filling and flavorful meals. You can build your favorite bowl, with rice or salad, maybe some falafel or chicken shawarma, certainly hummus and any of a dozen toppings, such as pickled cucumbers and tahini. They also offer platters, so you don't have to make any decisions—just a plate of, say a chicken kabob, and french fries, falafel, hummus, pita and baklava. There's even plenty for vegetarians and meatlovers alike to find delicious. Both are likely to agree on the tabbouleh salad, if not the marinated lamb. Whether you go for a plate, skewer or wrap, you can be sure of one thing: You won't leave hungry. Actually, it will be your most satisfying stop of the day.
left: Your favorites—stuffed grape leaves, cheese pies, beet salad and more—ready to go
Best Ice Cream
GOFER ICE CREAM
Ice cream and summertime are perfect partners. They just go together. Now, how you want your ice cream is up for debate. Some like soft serve, some a classic scoop, and some prefer their ice cream smashed deliciously between two giant cookies. We're not playing favorites; they're all good choices. Our voters also agreed that the best place to pick up this treat is at Gofer Ice Cream, which offers lots of choices— including smoothies and slushes. Enjoy this sweet way to beat the heat.
Stack of Oreo and chocolatechip flying disks with vanilla ice cream, a "Blue Goo" soft ice cream twist, and a double scoop of Salted Caramel and Oreo and Chocolate Chunk
Best Burger LITTLE PUB
Little Pub has a bit of magic. Walking in from a busy day and all its worries and urgent matters and the bright summer sun, you suddenly decompress. It's like a time portal. Inside, it's all handhewn beams and ironwork, inviting you to put down your day and relax, like nothing else matters. It's just you, your friends around the table, and that glorious, juicy burger in front of you. Yes, there are endless comfortfood options on the menu (including amazing salads), but our voters zeroed in on the burgers, and for good reason. We're drawn to the "Three Hands," which is a burger topped with melted cheddar cheese, crispy fried onions, creamy mac-n-cheese and red hot buffalo sauce. It tells you a lot about the place, like you can be yourself and put your concerns aside. Just be you and have a good time. They even have live music on certain nights. Oh, and vegetarians, yes, there is a veggie burger that holds it own with roasted peppers, jack cheese and a zippy cilantro-chipotle aioli. Enjoy your escape.
Best Pizza COLONY GRILL
Date night, kids in tow, gathering of old high-school buddies, girls' night out—it all just works at Colony Grill. It's that kind of spot, in that it works for everybody who wants to ease up and enjoy a good bite. It seems that our voters agree. They exhaulted the place to the top, and we're guessing it's because the thin-crust pies are irresistible. Yes, you can order a classic cheese with hot oil or the famous salad pizza, which is best when you really can't decide if you want pizza or salad (you get both). We're also intrigued by the Breakfast Pie, made to order with bacon or sausage, egg and cheese. We know this place knows what it's doing—it's been around since 1935, rooted in appealing to the bar crowd (pizza in this hand, beer in that one). Now, its classic pizza appeals to everyone, and draws crowds in lower-, mid-, and upper-Fairfield County. Standing out among the many pizza places is no easy feat, but to do so for decades? That is impressive, and Colony wins people over year after year.

WINNING PICKS
Best Cafe/Bistro THE GRANOLA BAR
The Granola Bar has a way of balancing food and fun as well as being a place to meet up with a friend and being a grab-and-go place. Here you can start your day with a fresh cup of cappuccino or maybe a Turmeric Latte or maybe a Berry Chia smoothie (strawberries, blueberries, banana, almond milk, flax and chia), any of which are a good pick. You can also grab a breakfast burrito (with eggs, quinoa, black beans, avocado, cheese and pico) or any number of such choices all day. It serves creative sandwiches, bowls, salads and toasts. Here, crowd-pleasing favorites are leveled-up.
Best Diner OREM'S DINER
Sometimes you meet up with friends who simply don't agree on what kind of food they want. The only win here is a diner, which has tons of options—and our voters chose Orem's Diner as their favorite. It was one place lots of people agreed on. As for a plate piled with food, you have choices upon choices— wraps, sandwiches, bagels, and pancakes, omlettes, avocado toasts, and chicken souvlaki platter, jalapeño poppers and baked meatloaf. Get the idea? Just open the menu for a world of satisfying options, and watch the whole table agree that it was a good idea to come here.

Best Desserts BE CHOCOLAT
Belgian chocolate. We thought that might get your attention. But there's more: Beligan chocolate handcrafted in small batches by a talented chocolatier, Chef Benoit. Our Best Of voters told us about their favorite place, BE Chocolat. Not only are the options in dark, milk and white chocolate delicious, but they're also beautiful. Benoit's artistry is on full display with the special collections, such as LOVE, a chocolate heart-shaped shell filled with an assortment of chocolate hearts. With special consideration to pairings, such as beer, BE Chocolat has fun. Consider the Chocolate Tasting and Pairing Class for six to twenty people, where you learn about creating and tasting the complexities of chocolate. Or perhaps you want to try the Chocolate Making Class. Or simply just stop by. The adorable shop is located in a quiet, leafy corner of Greenfield Hills. The next time your sweet tooth tries to get your attention, listen.

GREEN & TONIC
There's vegetarian, then there's plant-based kitchen. That's Green & Tonic. At this cafe, with eat-in or take-out options, you can chose from a selection of prepared options, including soups, salads, bowls and sandwiches. If we might suggest one, consider the Curry Chickpea wrap in collard greens—more filling than you might guess. Otherwise, if you want to take control, you can build your own acai bowl, choosing from such toppings as shredded coconut, granola, and chia seeds. If you're in the mood to hand over the driver's seat, try a smoothie bowl from the menu; perhaps the Coco Haze with a mix of coconut, banana, granola and cacao. They also have an impressive selection of fresh juices, like the Green Monster, with cucumber, celery, green apple, kale, ginger, romaine, spinach, lemon, parsley and spirulina. Fresh and healthy. Perhaps a side of Kelp Noodles?

BARCELONA WINE BAR
Barcelona Wine Bar is one of those places that everyone can agree on. It has something for everyone's appetite, but it also just has a welcoming way of putting one and all at ease—like a mini vacation. And when on vacation, live like a local. Here, that means ordering the table at least one charcuterie and cheese and plenty of tapas (say, Pulpo, artichoke purée and salsa verde or fava beans, mint, leeks, crispy Serrano, smoked Maldón). Also, be sure to make a selection or two from the very impressive wine list. The options are endless, so whether your favorite type is a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Noir or even a dry Sherry, you can narrow down to a few varieties to sip. If you can't decide, you can't lose with the sangria, of course. Order the table a pitcher, perhaps the Rioja wine, elderflower, citrus-infused dark rum and guava nectar. Who wouldn't agree to that?

Best Closet Organization CALIFORNIA CLOSETS
What is real luxury? It's in the way you feel. Having an organized space is an essential element to feeling calm, comfortable and confident. The trustworthy way of moving from cluttered chaos to streamlined storage is California Closets. Our voters recognize that the custom-designed spaces bring order to their carefully curated collection of clothes, shoes, bags and the many accessories. Aside from being able to build outfits with ease, an organized closet also protects your investments—no snags, no wrinkles, no dust, no fading. It includes layout, lighting and overall look of the system, too, whether that's pure white and minimalist or something with lots of ornate, layered details. The team works with you, including a consultation, 3D digital model to review, custom creation and professional installation. You might like it so much in your bedroom that you'll look at your home office, mudroom or family room to see if they, too, need to be transformed for the better.

above: At its heart, lighting is about making sure everything in a room is lit properly—but even in this room, awash in natural light, the woven hanging lights add an essential design element to the overall look.
Best Lighting CHLOE WINSTON LIGHTING DESIGN
Never underestimate the power of good lighting. Your favorite room is properly illuminated. Dark reading corners are suddenly aglow with a table lamp. The busy kitchen, always packed with your family looking to grab a bite of whatever you're cooking, is better because of brilliant task lighting. The entry? It has a gentle ceiling light to welcome guests. Our readers agreed by sending in vote after vote for Chloe Winston Lighting Design. We should add "again," because this popular shop wins year after year. You might say people have seen the light about lighting options. They turn to designer and upscale options in the showroom to imagine the possibilities at home. Plus, there's plenty of interior design help to make sure you have selections that will work. You'll know that you made the right choice when you feel good in your space—and you now have more than one favorite room.
Best Color + Styling Salon
THE COLOR CAFE
Sometimes you need a whole new look. Maybe it's a crisp bob or long and lush layers; other times it might be an entirely different color with touches of sunny highlights. Whatever you're envisioning for your hair this summer, The Color Café is ready to reveal the new you. With nine years in Greenwich and a very happy year one in Norwalk, the salons have won over our voters. Just tell your stylist and color specialist what you're looking for and wait for the big, gorgeous reveal.
Best Day Spa
THE SPA AT THE J HOUSE
Everything can be just fine, and yet we still feel like something could be a little better. Our voters find it at The Spa at the J House. It has all of the treatments that turn your day around, from Hydra facials to IV Hydration Services. Of course, it also has many massage options. May we suggest the Stress Relief Massage with pure essential oils or, perhaps, Deep Tissue Lymphatic Flush? Get your glow back with a Quenching Aloe Wrap, which comes with a scalp, neck and foot massage. There's many, many more. The team works with you on your wellness and beauty goals. The spa thinks of every detail, from the luxury skincare ingredients to the full experience, such as the music. They play MusiCure, therapeutic sounscapes by Danish composer Niels Eje.

Your beloved pets might not know better, but you do. So, at Earth Animal find the wholesome pet food, treats and pet supplies that they'll love—and you can feel good about. For example, consider the No-Hide Chews that are healthy and digestible, while also taking care of your fur-baby's teeth and gums. But that's just the start. Top Dentists
The Methodology Behind the List
To create our Top Dentists list, we relied on the experts from DataJoe, a leading software and research firm. Dental practitioners were chosen based on an online peer-voting process, which was facilitated by DataJoe. The final list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals.
SELECTION PROCESS Summary
To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a dentist’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that dentist was excluded from the list. In addition, any dentist who has been disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.
Final Note
We recognize that there are many good dentists who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding dentists in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective dentists may not appear on the list.

For over 30 years, Dr. Mark Sutton has helped build one of the oldest and most reputable practices in Greenwich through his commitment to lifelong education, evidence-based practice and patient satisfaction. Dr. Sutton puts his patients’ comfort and treatment expectations at the forefront, while using the latest technology to deliver the highest quality care. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the Connecticut State Dental Association, and the Greenwich Dental Society, where he has served as president.
Dr. Sean Sutton was born and raised in Greenwich, where he was given a firsthand perspective to the impact his father makes in the community through patient care and neighborhood outreach programs. At the University of Michigan, Sean was Captain of the 1st and 2nd ever Division-1 men’s lacrosse teams and excelled in his studies and goal of becoming a doctor. Like his father, Dr. Sean Sutton graduated with honors from NYU College of Dentistry. There, he learned from the top minds in the fields of cosmetic and restorative dentistry, while taking advantage of the school’s world renowned research programs and state-of-the-art dental
technology. He completed his hospital residency program at The Brooklyn Hospital, where he received extensive training in oral surgery, orthodontics and pediatrics. Dr. Sean Sutton believes that oral health is an integral part of overall health and works with specialists in all fields of medicine to provide his patients with healthy and beautiful smiles. Dr. Sean Sutton is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the Connecticut State Dental Association, and the American
Academy of Clear Aligners.

Where did you go to school?
I completed my undergraduate, Dental degree and a 1-year hospital residency at Washington University in St Louis in 1991. I then went on to specialize in Periodontics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. There, I completed a three-year residency, was Chief Resident and received a certificate in Periodontics and Implants as well a Master’s in Science. I opened my private practice in Greenwich in 1998. I recently moved into a newly modeled, state of art office, also in Greenwich.
Linhart Dentistry, with over 40 years of expertise in Midtown Manhattan, has expanded into Greenwich!
“We are old-world service and charm in a modern, stateof-the-art environment”, says Dr. Jan Linhart and Dr. Zachary Linhart, “our history is deeply rooted in New York City, but our story began in Europe, and our patients are from all over the world. We always knew Greenwich would be the next point of expansion, and we are excited to have established our new office in Cos Cob, right in the middle of town.”
In 1979, Dr. Jan Linhart opened the doors to Linhart Dentistry in NYC’s iconic Helmsley Building, steps from Grand Central Terminal. There, Dr. Linhart built a most impressive, full-service dental practice, from fullmouth cosmetic cases to comprehensive general care.
NY Magazine referred to the practice as “One-Stop Dental Perfection!”
In 2010, Dr. Zachary Linhart joined the practice after following in his father’s footsteps of attending Bowdoin College and NYU College of Dentistry. He added his expertise in implantology, and echoing his father, an eye for cosmetic dentistry. Their NYC staff of over 25 consists of top in-house specialists including a Periodontist (gum and implant specialist), Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist), Orthodontist (braces and Invisalign specialist) as well as hygienists, assistants and administrative staff - many of whom have been there for more than twenty years!
It’s clear both doctors have the skill and the talent, and their unparalleled abilities to create the most stunning, natural smiles is at the foundation of their world-renowned
Dr. Emily Driesman and the incredible staff of Embrace Orthodontics have been providing families in Fairfield County superior orthodontic care for a decade. Growing from her original office in Westport, Dr. Emily Driesman (“Dr. Emily”), has now expanded her locations to include a second state of the art office in Stamford. Additionally, Dr. Rebecca Voldman has joined the team to increase availability in both offices.
With a passion for creating a comfortable atmosphere and a “concierge type practice,” Dr. Emily prides herself on not only creating beautiful, healthy and functional smiles, but also cultivating relationships with each patient she treats. Having grown up in Fairfield County, Dr. Emily can relate to her patients and truly loves practicing in the area she
reputations as leaders in cosmetic and restorative family dentistry.
When Dr. Zachary Linhart moved to Greenwich in 2016 with his young family, he was returning to the area, having grown up in nearby Purchase, NY and graduating from RCDS. At this point, the plan to extend their NYC practice was set in motion. It wasn’t until the Covid pandemic that Dr. Zachary Linhart fully realized the positive impact a Greenwich practice would have for current Linhart Dentistry patients, as well as other local residents.
“Our added location in this beautiful, suburban environment has provided more, and easier opportunities to keep up with regular dental care. We are so pleased to be offering our services in Greenwich, and look forward to welcoming the community to our new office!”

Silvestro Iommazzo, DDS & Victor Pardi, DDS
Why did you choose your specialty?
As a specialist in pediatric dentistry, Dr. Iommazzo cares for the oral health of children from infancy to early adult. As a specialist in orthodontics Dr. Pardi supports patients by improving their smiles and selfesteem, in addition to correcting even the most complex bite problems. We both have different passions but strive to do all we can for our patients.
What sets you apart from your competition?
Our practice has continued to serve our community for over thirty years. We provide state-of-the-art treatment in all phases of pediatric dentistry and orthodontics, including emergency service 24-7. We are constantly engaged in continuing education to stay up-to-date with the latest technologies to best serve our patients and families.
If you add up all the years Dr. Goodwin has been in the Dental Field as a Hygienist and a Dentist, you will see she has been taking care of teeth for over 20 years. “Time has flown by. I’ve had the opportunity to see so many changes in Dentistry.”
Technological advances really help her days go by with less stress. At her family practice in Cos Cob she uses the safest equipment and the most up-todate technology available. While there are many things I love about being a Dentist, treatment planning with the local specialists in town is very exciting for me. Being a solo Dentist at my office can get lonely sometimes, so it is great to work and collaborate with a group of talented dentists I also call my friends. I love watching kids I see at 3 or 4 years old grow up. Being a general dentist I can appreciate different stages of growth and even watch them have their own children. But the best
part about my job is the worklife balance it provides me of a mother of 2 active boys. I can get into work early, treat patients all day, and make it to their events after school. It is most important to me not to miss my children growing up, and Dentistry allows me to do just that.
Our practice has continues to serve our community for over 20 years. We provide state-ofthe-art treatment in all phases of dentistry, including after hour emergency care. We engage in continuing education to stay up to date with the latest technologies to best serve our patients and families. We get to know our patients very, very well. Our staff have been with our practice a LONG time. We love seeing our patients all over town. I love when kids run up to me to show me their wiggly teeth or when patients introduce me to their families. It’s a great feeling and the reason I love being a Local Dentist.

Dr. Wong’s orthodontic practice has prided itself in providing the highest quality of service for every child, adolescent or adult patient that comes to his office. He has always believed in maintaining the highest level of professional ethics, and he will only start orthodontic treatment if and when it is appropriate to do so. His capable and friendly staff has always tried to make every patient’s orthodontic treatment an enjoyable experience in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
Will patients feel safe coming back to the dentist?
During these trying times, we are taking every precaution necessary to safe guard our patients and staff. Patients can be reassured that at Greenwich Smiles we surpass all CDC, OSHA and ADA quidelines. When patients arrive they must be wearing a mask. If a patient does not have a mask, one will be provided.
All patients will then disinfect at the hand sanitation station, have their temperature taken and complete a screening process questionnaire. We have staggered appointments so no one is in the waiting room. In between appointments we have alotted 15 minutes for disinfecting all rooms. After business hours there is a complete disinfection process including medical grade air purifiers. These are a few of the measures we have taking to ensure our patients feel safe and comfortable in our office.
