After weight-loss surgery, Denine came back healthier. Denine and her friends were planning a big celebration for their 40th birthdays. But because of her ongoing battle with weight, Denine wasn’t looking forward to celebrating. She turned to the bariatric team at Greenwich Hospital who performed a laparoscopic procedure to dramatically shrink the size of her stomach. In just one year, Denine lost over 100 pounds. At Greenwich Hospital’s nationally accredited* bariatric program, a team of weight-loss specialists supports each patient before, during and after surgery, so people like Denine can come back happier. See Denine’s comeback story at greenwichhospital.org.

*Greenwich Hospital has received Comprehensive Program accreditation from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).

new collections to hit this season’s runways. Megan sits down with three talented stars on the London fashion scene—Malene Oddershede Bach, Daniela Karnuts and Saloni Lodha. Their disparate approaches to chic feminine flair remind us that there is something on the fashionista spectrum for every style sensibility (“British Invasion,” page 98). And rounding out our spring welcoming is Jamie Marshall’s story on unique workouts that are popping up all over town. Keeping up with the growing trend of specialized training and boutique fitness studios is a workout in and of itself, so Jamie takes a look at ten that caught our eye (“Working It Out,” page 106). We know that there are plenty of others. Drop us a note and let us know which ones get your blood pumping. Now, back to those balmy temps. I just checked the weather, and guess what the forecast is for next week? (Hint: It rhymes with foe.) Well played, Mother Nature, well played. WILLIAM TAUFIC

A

s of this writing, we’ve bravely survived the Polar Vortex and are enjoying springlike 60 degree temperatures. I’m not falling for it. I have little doubt that Mother Nature is chuckling right now—getting ready to send us another snowstorm, arctic blast or perhaps bomb cyclone (remember that one?). Well, bring it on MN, do your best. Because we know that with March comes the promise that longer, warmer days are just ahead. With that in mind, this month we offer up a celebration of spring. In “Land & Sea” (page 90) writer Nancy Ruhling tours a gorgeous Riverside garden that welcomes visitors with stunning views and stately design. But one of the most compelling elements of the property is not visible at all. It’s the friendship that’s blossomed there. For more than forty years, homeowner Monika Heimbold and landscape designer Susan Cohen have bonded over everything from family and friends to site plans and garden design. Take a stroll through the grounds with these charming, talented ladies. Market Editor Megan Gagnon helps us welcome another rite of spring passage—the

LIGHTING UP LIVES

TRIGGERING A CONVERSATION

A very appreciative honoree is sitting at her kitchen table writing to you to say thank you for the wonderful evening celebrating some very special and unique individuals in the community. I relished the opportunity to meet each of you, my fellow honorees and share in this very lovely event. Thank you for guiding our every step through the process from the photo session with Melanie Lust, who is a special and talented professional; the interview with Jill Johnson [November: “Heroes Among Us: Light A Fire 2018]; and the event itself. All the coordination and organization—seamless and beautifully done. So I thank you for all you do to celebrate individuals, promote organizations in our community and help those who need it the most. And, of course, thank you for the great accomplishment of all those beautiful magazines. LYNN VILLENCY COHEN, STAMFORD

Editor’s Note: Lynn was honored as the Most Dedicated Supporter of the Arts for her years of volunteer work at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center.

2. I wanted to thank you for bringing Peter to “the fore” at the wonderful Light A Fire awards evening. It was a first for us. I spend most of my time and wherever I can hiding under a rock, so you got me out and educated me a bit. We found the different honorees really interesting, James Naughton the best of MCs and, the biggest treat of all, seeing Jonathan in action. He is absolutely terrific on his feet and such a combination of his two parents. ISABEL MALKIN, GREENWICH

Editor’s Note: Peter Malkin was our Lifetime Achievement honoree for his contribution to Greenwich Green & Clean, Greenwich Tree Conservancy, Greenwich Historical Society, Merritt Parkway Conservancy and National Trust of Historical Preservations, among other nonprofit organizations.

3. I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful event the Light A Fire was on November 29 and how thrilled we were to win the Fairfield County’s Community Foundation Community Impact Award. It was also special to me to meet Donna Moffly and hear the story of how Moffly Media started. MARTHA STONE, HARTFORD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CENTER FOR CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY

I did not expect to see the Postscript “Honor & Reflect” in your September issue. It took my breath away. Thank you, [photographer] Lisa Keuker and the entire GREENWICH magazine staff for printing such a beautiful photograph and poignant words. You have touched Chloe and me deeply, and we are certain other families feel the same. For the honor, the reflection and for knowing that GREENWICH magazine and our community “indeed will never forget,” you have our deepest gratitude. SUSAN WOHLFORTH, GREENWICH

5. DINING IN

4. POIGNANT POSTSCRIPT GREENWICH magazine is a firstrate publication. Everyone knows that. Aside from the informative, well-written articles, features and departments, I always enjoy reading the last page, your Postscript. Because we are now approaching the seventeenth anniversary of September 11th,

I love Donna’s wit and attitude about entertaining [October: From the Founders, “Of Entertaining at Home” by Donna Moffly]. Who can forget the exquisite Gilliatt dinner parties—Mary, mistress of the perfect table and Neal holding forth after dinner on topics of the day. Will young people today ever use a finger bowl or grow perfect roses to line the center of long dining tables? The Gilliatts were Greenwich royalty. NATALIE PRAY, GREENWICH

I can’t thank you enough for the amazing, beautiful story about #UNLOAD that you’ve published in GREENWICH magazine [October: “The Art of Conversation” by Timothy Dumas]. It’s a great honor to be featured in both GREENWICH and your WESTPORT magazine. We have many #UNLOAD team members based in Westport/ Weston including Helen During. I commend you heartily for publishing a story about our gun violence prevention efforts in the run up to one of the most polarized elections this country has ever seen. You guys are brave and bold! Hopefully, readers will see our #UNLOAD effort as nonpartisan—that’s certainly how Tim correctly interpreted our efforts. Thank you for your support of our project! MARY HIMES, COS COB

WHERE THE WILD THINGS WERE

AND WE THOUGHT NOAH HAD A TOUGH JOB. TRY RELOCATING A GARDEN FILLED WITH LIFE-SIZE “ANIMALS”

Friendly lions William and Henry welcomed many visitors to the Day garden over the years.

xceptional gardens take years to plan, grow and evolve. And when homeowners move, they typically have to leave all that hard-earned natural beauty behind. But Lucy and Nat Day, who recently relocated from Greenwich to Palm Beach, had a different idea. The couple had created a one-of-a-kind landscape on the grounds of their Dutch Colonial, which had become a favorite stop on garden tours. “I have always loved topiary gardens. I saw them first many years ago in England,” Lucy says. “When

we expanded our house, we had to redo the garden and it was an opportunity to do something new.” Working with two experts over twenty years, they transformed their property into a worldclass zoo of sorts. A pair of lions, peacocks, frogs, a hunting dog and a twelve-foot elephant are among the parade of evergreen animals lovingly brought to life by British gardener Steve Manning and later Matt Larkin of Black Barn Farm, who’s also the head of the board at Berkshire Botanical Garden in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

So when the Days made plans to move to Florida, they decided to donate their treasured topiaries to Berkshire Botanical. This was no standard shipping job. “It’s a very unusual thing to be able to preserve a garden by picking up and moving it,” Lucy said. A crane was brought in and some of the topiaries, which were hand-dug by a crew from Twin Brooks Gardens of Millbrook, New York, had to be lifted over the house. Jumbo the elephant, estimated to weigh 6,000 pounds, was picked up via crane and hoisted onto a flatbed

truck. The lions were given to Sleepy Cat Farm here in Greenwich, so they can still be viewed locally during Open Garden Days. The rest of the prized collection is now replanted at its new home in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The garden there will comprise a gazebo with space for events, kids’ parties, weddings and concerts. So, these special animals will live on and enjoy visitors for many years to come. Lucy’s Garden will open officially this summer, with a special kickoff on June 8. berkshirebotanical.org

THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD TRIP

b y kim-marie evans

“NOTHING BEHIND ME, EVERYTHING AHEAD OF ME, AS IS EVER SO ON THE ROAD.” – JACK KEROUAC, ON THE ROAD

O

ne of the hottest new trends in travel might come as a surprise. The old fashioned road trip is back. But this is not the overpacked station wagon of your childhood. Gone are the days of accordioned paper maps and the ensuing fights over directions. No more spending hours searching road signs for the ever-elusive Q in an effort to dominate in a cutthroat game of Alphabet. Road trips have been romanticized as long as Americans have had cars and roads to take them out on. Even former President George H. W. Bush made road trips sound like the epitome of family joy. The President once said: “We were a close, happy family, and never closer, or happier, than when we crammed into the station wagon together—five kids and two dogs.” The road trip as a family vacation lost its footing when air travel became cheap and easily accessible. Credit the misery of TSA lines, the ever-shrinking airplane seat and the nickel-and-diming of everything from a checked bag to a box of crackers for pushing vacationers back behind the wheel.

ESSENTIAL APPS Forget a paper map and highlighters. Download the ROADTRIPPERS app and lay out your entire journey. The app lets you plan the best route, find stops along the way and even search for roadside lodging.

here are companies that specialize in planning road trips. It can be as simple as mappin out your route and booking hotels along the way or as elaborate as organizing once-ina-lifetime activities and setting up luxury camps (real beds, working toilets and gourmet meals). A few luxury specialists, All Roads North (allroadsnorth.com) and EXP Journeys (expjourneys.com), count many Fairfield County families among their clients. Kevin Jackson, owner of EXP Journeys, says that the domestic demand for its services has increased dramatically in the last eighteen months. He says when most people travel abroad, they rely on expert planners and curated itineraries. But people now realize that just because they’re on home turf doesn’t mean they can “wing it.” He says the most popular itineraries

are journeys through the National Parks, excursions along the California coast and visits to big sights like the Grand Canyon. But they can design trips for any location. A few reasons travelers turn to companies like EXP is for their expertise in avoiding crowds, the ability to set up luxury camps in areas where lodging is, well, subpar, and even to do the driving. Yes, you can hire a chauffeur for your epic road trip. Each itinerary is custom-created. An example of the ultimate road trip is an eight day itinerary that would include overnight stays at Amangeri, Mount Zion Ranch, luxury camping on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, guided hikes and horseback rides, and a daylong charter on Lake Powell. (The trip doesn’t come cheap—it’s about $45,000 for four people.)

Never wander looking for a gas station again; the GASBUDDY app will give you the nearest station and current prices. ROADSIDE AMERICA is the app of Clark Griswold’s dreams. It’s a rich database of weird and wonderful sites along the road, from the world’s second largest ball of twine to quirky museums, scenic vistas and historical landmarks. WAZE, of course, is a lifesaver. A paper map can’t tell you that a road is at a dead stop due to an accident or closed because of bad weather.

practical advice Whether you do it yourself or turn to the experts, SCOTTY REISS, former Greenwich resident and founder of the website A Girl’s Guide to Cars, offers these five tips.

PREP YOUR TECH When you get your oil changed and tires checked, have the dealership make sure your technology is also up to date. Apple CarPlay makes musical playlists the new “mixed tape.”

PLAN ENTERTAINMENT If your car has Wi-Fi, buy a plan. Most are available in daily or weekly packages and typically allow up to ten devices to connect. Or buy a mobile Wi-Fi connector; everyone’s device will work better than just running off cellular.

DON’T MAKE IT ALL ABOUT DEVICES Take time to be together; don’t let everyone tune out for the entire trip. Sing, talk, discuss politics and religion. Catch up on what your teens are doing, tell your tots fascinating family stories (they are a captive audience).

MANAGE EXPECTATIONS Let your passengers know what to expect. If you think traffic will be a challenge or the drive will be a long one, letting them know will help avoid anxiety and crabbiness. Even little kids understand “three more movies until Grandma’s.”

GIVE EVERYONE A JOB Who’s driving? Who’s navigating? Who’s in charge of the playlist? Who will find the next stop for food or a quirky Instagram pic?

THE FUN FACTOR BMW’S REDONE X4 SHOWS THAT LESS UTILITY CAN LEAD TO MORE SPORT

the proper amount of zap to make life enjoyable. The X4 should be regarded as runabout-sporty but not fire-breathing, dirtclawing sporty. If more muscle is required, there is an optional, 355-horsepower, twin-turbo six in the upgraded M40i version. But I liked averaging 26 mpg with the peppy base model. Another plus is the handsome dash that’s easy to work. The satellite radio sounds full (something not every manufacturer has been able to figure out). The leather interior feels good, especially

to drive. I liked it right away. But…. “interesting,” as I say. The brawny front end that stretches out so grandly is paired with a sloping roof, short-butt rear end to make sure the X4 is not just another cookie-cutter luxury crossover. The rakish, coupe-like roofline serves, as it does on other German vehicles with this design motif, to take away headroom from rear-seat passengers and also reduce rear-view sightlines. There is, however, a welcome amount of hauling space. The turbo-4 base engine has

on the heated steering wheel, which sends out subtle warning vibrations when the blind-spot detection unit senses trouble. You would get more utility in the standard-shaped X3 model, but its jaunty cousin, the new X4, redesigned for 2019, is more than a pile o’ style. It’s just got that dash and zest that makes life entertaining. G

he night after I got my hands on BMW’s interesting X4, a dangerous mission arose. I was to brave punishing rain across Queens to JFK for a pickup. This, as any Tri-State citizen knows, can be a hellacious trek. Actually, it is worth mentioning only because the slog was so beautifully peaceful. The sporty player was positioned at decent height (not as high as other SUVs) for viewing the road. The all-wheel-drive system worked like a charm. It all added up to a pleasing verdict: This is a fun car

THIS RECENTLY OPENED COS COB BOUTIQUE HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO HELP YOU FEATHER YOUR NEST

I

f you step into Habitat Greenwich and find yourself wanting to sit down and stay awhile, this is by design. The chock-full-of-treasures store in Cos Cob, owned by Kim Caravella, brings together all the elements of a cozy, well-furnished home: sisal rugs, gorgeous lighting fixtures, chill music, striking original art, a mix of new and vintage furniture, and accessories you won’t find elsewhere. “My philosophy is that your home is a place where you should walk in and say, aahhh. It should smell great and feel great,” says Kim, who has decades of experience as a designer, including years at Orrick & Co. and Mitchell Studio before starting her own firm. She cites celeb designers Darryl Carter and Jeffrey Alan Marks as personal influences. Her new boutique reflects her old-world-meets-new-world sensibility as well as her love for mixing modern and traditional and a range of materials, from high gloss to earthy textures. For instance, she pairs Lucite lamps with an antique wood table, and Moroccan tiles with a giant modern light fixture. Habitat’s selection of home goods and gifts includes pieces with a story behind them: reclaimed wood stools, benches made from tree roots, hand-glazed mugs from Denmark, chunky wool throws from a Russian artisan. Original art covers the walls with paintings by Allison Meyler, Katy Garry and Rebecca Stern and photo art by Alicia Sands Tiberio. Need help pulling together a room? Kim can assist with small and large home design projects, through C&C Interior Design, a design business that she shares with Claudia Duvall. Kim’s eye for accessories veers toward items that have a tie to charity, such as the Sea Change candles she stocks, which have ocean-inspired scents and benefit an organization that helps people get 234 East Putnam access to clean drinking water. Natural materials and Avenue, Cos Cob; coastal colors figure prominently, as Kim loves the beach 203-900-1233; and serves on the board of Friends of Greenwich Point. habitatgreenwich.com

utsourcing makes sense/ cents for small and midsize businesses, especially when it comes to human resource and business solutions. Enter Insperity, a company offering full-service HR solutions that recently opened in Stamford. Gregory Burguillos, district manager, explains that Stamford, the company’s seventy-second outpost, represents how business is growing in our region. “The area is transitioning from a largebusiness mecca to an area of small to midsize businesses,” he says. “Insperity is able to give companies their time back.” He adds that in today’s climate, rules and regulations are constantly changing and updating, and just keeping abreast of changes is next to impossible for small- and midsize business owners. Insperity absorbs most of the daily employee-related administration, while the company maintains complete control over its employees, business decisions and operations. Insperity is also dedicated to giving back to the community and its employees, by giving them twelve hours each quarter to volunteer during the workday. “It’s part of our philanthropic spirit and defines who we are as a business,” Burguillos says.

EXPERT ADVICE ON AVOIDING PHYSICAL INJURY SO YOU CAN REACH YOUR FITNESS GOALS

T

hink back to January. Remember all those good intentions to get back to the gym and recommit to a fitness regimen? Odds are you started the year right, perhaps overdid it, maybe injured yourself in your eagerness to get back in shape. Well it’s never too late to start again. To help you, we reached out to experts Jamie Barone and Dr. Katherine Vadasdi, who had plenty to say about good fitness practices that will help you prevent physical injury. Together, their guidelines are sure to keep the whole family on track to reaching peak fitness without visits to the doctor’s office. by camill a a. herrer a

Swim team and senior program director at Chelsea Piers Connecticut in Stamford shares his strategies for keeping your young athletes off the sidelines. PACE YOURSELF Often, new seasons bring with them new sports commitments (and the stress that comes with a new schedule). “Don’t feel like you have to do it all,” says Barone. Because injury and overuse prevention are related in youth sports, the best way to avoid getting hurt is a combination of proper training, strengthening and rest. “For our swimmers, we build breaks into our season to let their bodies rest. The younger the athlete, the more scheduled breaks are important.” STRETCH IT OUT Incorporate stretching “to keep muscles long, lean and strong.”

STAY WARM Since it is still cold outside, begin your outdoor workout by stretching or warming up before beginning your cardio routine. “This will get your muscles warm and lungs used to the cool air.”

PLAY MULTIPLE SPORTS “There’s inherent crosstraining that [happens] when you play more than one sport; this is preferred so young athletes don’t burn out or over-develop specific muscles.” Playing more than one sport also helps youth develop life skills. “There’s zero correlation between early success in a sport and later success.”

CORE VALUES Working on your core through Pilates, yoga or another form of exercise is crucial to avoiding back pain. “Also, stretching your lower back and doing rotation exercises before and after a workout is a good way to avoid getting hurt.”

DR. KATHERINE VADASDI Sports medicine specialist and director of the Women’s Sport Medicine Center at ONS of Greenwich reveals tried-and-true advice on how to get fit safely. START SLOW If you’ve taken time off, ease back into exercise. If you’re picking up running, for example, start off slowly. “Or begin at an entry level if you’re trying a new fitness class,” says Dr. Vadasdi.

AVOID OVERSCHEDULING “[Kids] don’t need to be doing something strenuous every single day.” CALL AN EXPERT Movement screenings are a great way to find musculoskeletal imbalances and poor movement patterns that could lead to injury. “Girls entering puberty or just past it should have their lower bodies analyzed for potential issues.”

VARIETY MATTERS Vary workouts within the three pillars of fitness: cardiovascular/endurance, strength and balance. “As we age, strength training, stretching and balance are particularly important.”

CALL YOUR DOCTOR Seventy-two hours of non-improving pain usually requires diagnosis and treatment. “Don’t play if you’re hurt; you get no points for playing through pain.”

POWER UP Before taking your workouts outside, focus on strength training to prep muscles for outdoor activities like spring skiing, running and cycling.

greenwichmag.com

52

CALL YOUR DOCTOR If you’ve started a new fitness regimen and you’re sore after working out, rest for a few days. Once soreness abates, you can return to exercising. If it still hurts, take a week off, then resume your routine. If you try a third time and aches return or are still present, it’s time to see an orthopedist who may suggest physical therapy or another non-invasive treatment.

TAKE BREAKS According to Barone, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that pre-pubescent children take three month-long breaks from a sport, and at least one to two days off every week.

WARM WELCOME GREAT FOOD, GOOD TIMES—EVERYONE IS FAMILY AT TONY’S

Q

uick: Name the only food that never spoils. The answer is … honey. It’s a question that Tony Capasso, the popular maître d’, restaurateur and trivia whiz who developed a following at Valbella and Gabriele’s, posed to our table at a dinner years ago. He didn’t know me at the time and had no idea that I write about food, yet his triviaask was on point. He chatted with us between courses, just enough for a few laughs without interrupting the conversation. Fast-forward to 2019 and Tony now has his own namesake restaurant, which opened late last fall at the JHouse Hotel, and he’s still reading tables— and people—equally well. On a Saturday night in early January, which can be a sleepy time post-holidays, the whole dining room and bar were filled at 6:30 p.m. As you’d expect, Tony was holding court bouncing from table to table, and a jazz trio with drummer Joe Corsello started playing at 7 p.m., adding to the lively night-on-thetown vibe. While we’ve had good meals here in the former iteration of the restaurant, the whole place seemed higher energy than in the past. And the service zoomed from average to excellent, likely due to Tony’s guidance, with a multitude of servers tending to our table and checking in regularly, addressing every detail. Along with Tony’s distinctive hospitality, he also brought in Denis Radovic, former executive chef at Gabriele’s, to serve as executive chef of Tony’s. His updated menu blends Italian comfort foods and steaks with some contemporary American and seafood. On a cold evening, we were seduced by some of the indulgent comfort foods, New Year’s diet

resolutions be damned. Right away, a server brought warm bread and tomato sauce to the table. To start we opted for short rib arancini, lush risotto balls filled with pieces of meat and served in a garlic parmesan cream sauce— bites of Italian heaven. A showstopper surfand-turf appetizer that could be dubbed the Hedonist’s Special proved tempting: an English muffin topped with filet mignon, slab bacon, a piece of lobster, caviar and a truffle sauce. It was enough for four of us to each have a bite or two of the rich but amazing tower of indulgences. Of course, there’s a range of salads here too, and the grilled endive is one we’d order again; grilling seems to bring out the flavor of the greens while rendering them less bitter and there’s a sweetness

QUICK BITES INSIDER EATS Tony’s favorite dishes at his own restaurant are the meatball appetizer and veal chop parmigiana entrée, a fave with regulars too.

WE’LL DRINK TO THAT The most popular cocktail is the Greenwich Garden— citrus vodka, muddled cucumber, rose petal simple syrup, lime juice served in a coupe glass. A robust bar menu makes this a perfect spot for dinner at the bar.

from candied walnuts and poached pears that is balanced by parmesan-laced dressing. The Allen Brothers steaks, which are dry-aged in house, were highly recommended so we tried the bone-in New York strip, which was perfectly cooked, flavorful and satisfying. The entrée we loved most was the King Crab Oreganata. It’s a huge portion of crab, the legs already cracked in half and prepared so that you can pick out the crab meat very easily with a fork. Among the seafood entrées, we opted for whole red snapper (line-caught off of Florida); the fish was tender and tasty, but you had to take care to avoid some small bones. The only disappointment of the night was the veal rollatini. This version was stuffed with so much sundried tomato that its sweetness overpowered the meat. For sides, we enjoyed the

charred broccoli and shoestring fries. With the steakhouse-style menu most vegetables are a la carte, which adds to the bill. We capped off the meal with decaf espressos and indulged in a few desserts, including the Zucchino, a lovely espresso-chocolate mousse with a vanilla sauce served in a sundae glass with a striped chocolate-dipped cookie straw as a garnish; a giant piece of chocolate cake; and a classic pistachio gelato. Tony had already dropped by our table several times, and we were able to guess some James Bond movie trivia without consulting Google. “One more?” he asked. “What’s the only English word that ends in mt? Hint: you’ll be doing it tonight.” As we were paying the bill, my friend figured it out: It’s “dreamt.” A fitting ending for a meal that has us G dreaming about the next dinner here. greenwichmag.com

eat NUTTY BUNNY CHOCOLATE STOUT FLOAT Nutty Bunny is a Stamford-based small business that makes the most delicious organic, vegan, gluten-free, non-dairy frozen desserts. In this blend, Nutty Bunny’s chocolate dessert, a cashew and coconut-based “ice-cream,” merges with the sweet and bitter, malty flavors of the stout, resulting in a sweet, dark dessert. Serve at the end of a meal or as part of brunch.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup coffee stout 4 scoops, Nutty Bunny chocolate dessert 2 large strawberries for garnish

CURRANT AFFAIR SPARKLER Black currants are considered a superfood: They have four times as much vitamin C as oranges and they pack more antioxidants than blueberries. So why not indulge? As your base, use Currant Affair black currant juice, which is made from currants grown at Maple Lane Farms in eastern Connecticut. Here’s a chance to raise your glasses to local, sustainable agriculture.

INGREDIENTS

March has many moods, and the best way to roll with it is to mix distilled spirits and brews with juices, fruits and nuts produced locally. They not only invigorate the immune system but also have the side benefit of supporting local businesses. Here are three of my favorite drinks to shake up the season for you and your favorite person.

This beautiful fruity cocktail is light enough to start off brunch. Squeeze sweet Cara Cara or Mandarin oranges and include the pulp. Muddle the strawberries until mostly liquid. Reposado tequila and a touch of lime tequila sweeten the drink. When glasses are empty, use a spoon to eat the boozy fruit pulp at the bottom of the glass.

INGREDIENTS 2 oz. Patrón reposado tequila ¼ oz. Patrón Citronge lime liqueur 3 oz. fresh-squeezed orange juice from Cara Cara or Mandarin oranges, with pulp 1 oz. muddled strawberries Strawberries to garnish Optional: thin jalapeño slices for garnish

DIRECTIONS Shake the tequila, lime liqueur and orange juice with crushed ice. Pour into ice-filled cocktail glasses. Add muddled strawberries to each glass and stir gently. Garnish with a strawberry. Option: If you like heat, float a thin slice of jalapeño in the drink. Essential Tool: A muddler. My favorite is the Oxo, made of stainless steel, but with a nylon hand grip and head strong enough to take on ginger. G

REAL ESTATE / BY CAROL LEONETTI DANNHAUSER

WHAT’S MINE IS YOURS RENTING OR OWNING A HOME IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY

DO THE MATH

Investing the money you save from renting vs. owning each month will outperform home equity over time, creating more wealth, according to a 2018 study from Florida Atlantic University.

costs that come with owning.” Combined with rising mortgage interest rates, decreasing home sales and the new federal tax law limiting property and state income tax deductions to $10,000, it’s no wonder renting is on the rise. If the fit isn’t right, renters avoid an expensive mistake and move. “Price is a big part of it,” says Gannalo, but comfort extends to house size, school ratings, sports activities, train commutes, beach access, the town’s cultural vibe and more. For many new residents, the decision comes down to dollars and cents. Buyers pay mortgage, homeowners’ insurance, property tax and, in some cases, monthly homeowners’ association payments—plus, they have to maintain and repair the home. Renters pay a security deposit (typically one-month’s rent) upfront, plus the first and last month’s rent. Rent is fixed for the duration of the lease, and if something needs to be repaired, the landlord usually pays. When the lease is up, however, costs can increase at the landlord’s whim. Plus, there’s no guarantee that the landlord will want to rent again. Length of stay must be considered. “If you have any intention of being here five years or more, I would not hesitate to buy,” Gannalo says. Over time, a home’s value should rise, growing equity as the principal on the mortgage decreases. If history is an indication, you will reap a return on your investment down the road when you sell. Plus, homeownership provides stability for families who want to settle down. Also, not just millennials are renting. A pair of empty-nesters asked Gannalo to find a place to stay while they were building a new house. “They sold a nice home of about 5,000 square feet on two acres in New Canaan a year or so ago. They wanted to maintain their style of living and didn’t want to scrimp on things. Rather than scale down into smaller quarters, they were happy to rent a similar size and shape.” The cost: $10,000 a month. G greenwichmag.com

You know the stereotypical Fairfield County home is a beautiful house with a white picket fence and manicured lawn spread over two acres. What you may not Denise Gannalo know: It’s a rental. High-end renters are flocking here to try out the towns, and shelling out thousands of dollars each month to do it. “People who want to live in Connecticut are coming to this area to try out the schools, the commute and more,” says Denise Gannalo, vice president of sales at William Raveis and managing director of Raveis’ Exceptional Properties Division. Renting “gives them the flexibility of trying out a town” without the six-figure entry fee of homeownership here. Take New Canaan, where the average home costs $1.5 million. A buyer would need $300,000 for a down payment, plus closing costs of 3 to 5 percent. “A lot of younger people are saddled with student debt” and have trouble saving for a down payment or even qualifying for a mortgage, says Gannalo, who represents Greenwich through Fairfield. But that doesn’t mean they can’t afford the rent. In 2018, of the 190 residences in New Canaan listed for rent, half of them cost $4,000 or more a month, and 32 rented for more than $7,000 a month. “There’s no down payment, no property taxes; the owner might not be as stringent with a credit score [as a mortgage company]; and you do not have the fix-up and improvement

IRISH EYES ARE SMILING

Before you break out that Kiss Me I’m Irish button, you might want to check just how Irish you really are. After a lifetime of my mother wearing green every St. Patrick’s Day and my father wearing orange, I assumed I was nothing but Irish. Turns out I was wrong. Thanks to an easy

home DNA test kit, I now know there’s a smattering of French and Scottish in the mix. (I chose to keep my results private so the information I received can only be seen by those I choose to share it with.) Mapping a family tree is simple, fun and illuminating. The process is relatively inexpensive—special promotions and sales can cut the cost to around $100, with an additional charge for access to a genealogical database. From my smartphone I was able to trace one side of my family back through the Revolutionary War and to the Mayflower. The site allowed me to view documents like early census records and ship manifests. Distant relatives posted photos of ancestors, and the site provided timely facts about what was going on in the countries and towns where my ancestors lived. Turns out I’m not from just one Irish village, I’ve got relatives sprinkled all over the Emerald Isle and beyond. But as my mother would say, “Everyone can be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day!” ancestory.com G

At the Greenwich Sentinel we have great respect for Greenwich Magazine. Most of us have been reading it, and looking for our photos in it, since we were in our twenties. Our publications share similar missions, to celebrate Greenwich. We know that our hometown is unique and wonderful. Yet, even here, we see how stressful, full lives can overwhelm the calmest disposition. No one wants to be judged for their worst moments, so this February let’s show each other and the world a little extra warmth and remind everyone why Greenwich and our residents are so special. February is home to Valentine’s Day (14) and Random Acts of Kindness Day (17). In this spirit, here are our anonymous friend’s updated Acts of Kindness.

27 ACTS of KINDNESS Help others to be the hero of their own story. Ask the name of your mail carrier, coffee server, waitress/waiter, valet attendant, the person at the front desk, etc. and use their name. Never, ever use the phrase, do you know who I am? Send a hand written thank you note. Put your phone away and be an active listener. When you think a nice thing about someone, say it out loud. Email or write to a former teacher who made a difference in your life. Tell your child that you really like spending time with them (and be prepared to answer when they ask why). Avoid interrupting others when they are speaking. Refrain from honking your horn unless it is a safety issue. Send flowers. Support and cheer for our local everything: retailers, scouts, paper, magazine, schools, teams, lemonade stands, and charities. It matters. Use those email & social media muscles to be nice: send messages of gratitude and use that LIKE button. Be excited for other people’s successes ... out loud. Be the hero of your story. Always hold the door or elevator for the next person. Each month pick up one extra of everything when you grocery shop and drop it off at Neighbor to Neighbor. Ask how can I help? Laugh more. Laugh louder. Each night fall asleep thinking about the best thing that happened that day. Purchase extra dog or cat food and drop it off at the animal control center on North Street with some old tennis balls. Say please, thank you, and you’re welcome. Smile... great! Now smile at someone while making eye contact. Let the person in line behind you go ahead of you if they are in a hurry or with children or just have a few items. When you’re ready to unload your temper on someone, especially in the service industry (like baristas and cashiers), say a prayer for them instead. If you have time, let the other driver have that parking space ... even on Greenwich Avenue. If you can, say yes.

Few things in life are as compelling as a tremendous view of the water. Connecticut people checking out southern states for a warm and attractive lifestyle have been drawn to two areas that offer as much seaside beauty as you can stand—Vero Beach, Florida, and coastal South Carolina near Hilton Head. Positioned on a nature preserve between the Atlantic and the Intracoastal Waterway, John’s Island provides its residents with water views galore. Located in Indian River Shores just north of Vero, it is blessed with breezes and endless perfect weather. Whether you’ve chosen a Georgian mansion, a West Indies-style house or a Bermuda condo, you get a lot of glittering visions of this water. The Beach Club opens on to six miles of private sand.

It was designed from the beginning to be a very safe and private place but also family friendly. The kids can take off on bicycles through twenty miles of scenic streets. With the gnarled oaks, the palms and hibiscus framing the land, every tableau is inspirational. Besides the boating and beach, John’s Island offers a million ways to stay vigorous and healthy. The health/wellness center is a popular place. The tennis and squash scenes are happening. (Croquet is also in the cards.) There are a variety of membership options for all this. Of course, John’s Island is justifiably famous for its golf. There are three courses, and the renowned designers—Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio—have created utterly different works of art. greenwichmag.com

Even if you don’t play golf, you’ll enjoy gazing upon its quiet splendor from any of the world-class dining options. Whether the situation calls for formal dining or casual, the food will be prepared by top chefs. Getting to John’s Island is not a problem. Direct flights now go between Westchester Airport and West Palm. There is also easy access to a private airport. For more, see johnsislandrealestate .com or call 772.231.0900. Another spot with near-perfect weather along the Atlantic is Dataw Island, blessed by the coastal forest and wetlands of South Carolina’s Low Country. It is not geographically distant from Hilton Head’s vibrant scene, but it is far from the hustle and bustle of the southernmost parts of the county. Beaufort, the antebellum charmer,

is also nearby. The idea was to create a socially convivial community where you can walk friendly byways, meet people in the clubhouse, play golf (on two heartbreakingly beautiful courses) and just be part of an active, neighborly and amiable scene. The creators of this development recognized that newcomers from the northeast were going to want refinement, and so they have provided it in sparkling measure. It’s a vital lifestyle in a graceful establishment. Water views? The lagoons and waterways that run through the Dataw property are just a feast of visual magic. A very safe place, it’s a community where people feel comfortable about leaving the house while they go off to Paris. New construction is available, but the master plan calls for no more than 1,100 houses. Call 843.838.3838 for information on Dataw Island or visit dataw.com.

children’s birthday parties and a wedding. Monika shows an old photo that reminds her about the necessary dynamiting during construction. A large section of rock had to be removed so the foundation of the three-story, shingled house could be erected. “We had to dig down seven feet,” she says. Even so, the house rises above its neighbors. After a short discussion, Susan and Monika agree that the site is the highest in Harbor Point. Early on, Monika and Susan decided that the property called for one grand garden instead of a series of smaller bouquet spaces. Susan tucked this garden below the back terrace, where it is also visible from the water. “It gets wonderful sun, and in the winter when the ground is bare, you don’t see it from the house,” she says. “We designed the depth of this garden, front to back, to equal the height of the house, in proportion to the architecture. This garden depth—over twenty feet in some areas— allows room for a great variety of

Working in collaboration with the Heimbolds’ architect, Robert Lamb Hart, Susan helped to site the house and to create the landscape features as well as the planting plan. The new house stands on the original site of Walhall, one of Greenwich’s great estates. It was built between 1912 and 1914 and demolished in 1954, when the property was broken into smaller lots. There was special pleasure for the Heimbolds in building a new home here with a “clean slate for the landscaping,” says Monika, who presents a snapshot that shows the construction work in progress with not a tree or shrub in sight. Susan adds, “Monika and I worked closely together, so the results are exactly what she wanted.” For example, “there wasn’t much flat space on the property,” Susan says. “So we revised the site plan and moved the house over by ten feet to create a flat lawn for the children to play on.” That lawn, which is defined by a curved retaining wall and five flowering crab apple trees, became a focal point for family events, including

flowering plants, so in every season, the garden looks lush and colorful.” Monika adds that she enjoys seeing it as she walks back from her swims and says that people who view it from their boats often compliment her on it. She chose the garden’s flowers from Susan’s lists of suggested plants, selected for a long season of bloom in a color scheme of pink, blue, purple and white, punctuated with yellow accents. Some of Monika’s favorite flowers are the roses: pink Bonica and yellow Knockout, which bloom most strongly in June and then rebloom later in the season. She also loves her pink Sarah Bernhardt peonies and the dark blue iris that fill the border, along with blue baptisia, purple salvia and allium, nepeta and the fluffy chartreuse blooms of lady’s mantle. In July, large clumps of Becky shasta daisies are the glory of the garden, along with their companion plants: clear blue balloon flowers, soft blue

Russian sage, the delightful geranium Rozanne and yellow coreopsis. The flowing habit of Japanese fountain grass adds a softening grace. In recent years, dahlias have been added, and these provide summer charm and touches of vibrant color. “I love the hostas and the white lilies,” Monika says, adding that the small Scandinavian-style bench under the Kousa dogwood tree, which blends with the shrubbery, is one of her favorite spots. The Heimbold garden, which was on the 2018 Greenwich Botanical Center Tour, also includes an often-used spa. In the front of the house, the planting scheme is quiet and green. For instance, one courtyard wall wears a leafy coat of euonymus Manhattan that rises to an architectural band below the roofline. A pair of star magnolias flanks the doors to a breezeway, and the other major plantings—of azaleas, rhododendrons,

holly and boxwood—offer a variety of textures. Sam Bridge Nursery planted them along with the new trees and shrubs on the property. In the center of the entry drive is a grove of multistemmed white birches, which are important to Monika. “There are so many birches in Sweden,” she says, adding that they remind her of her birthplace. Monika, a cofounder and long-standing board member of the World Childhood Foundation, USA, and an executive trustee of the American Scandinavian Foundation, says that guests—especially those from Scandinavia—often remark on the beauty of these trees. At one dinner event held here, Queen Silvia, the founder of the World Childhood Foundation, was delighted to see this touch of Sweden in Riverside. When Monika isn’t in her garden, she’s looking at it from the inside. The house includes a Swedish-style cupola of her own design that encloses an

interior winding staircase. Sitting in her sunny-yellow living room sipping lemon water, she can see Long Island Sound framed in the picture window like a postcard. A collection of paintings in gilded frames reinforces the view. “Sweden is all about nature,” she says. “That’s why several of our paintings are by Bruno Liljefors, who painted landscapes. We are a sailing family, so we have many paintings of boats, too.” Every spring, Monika sits down with Susan and with Cora Burnham of Sanctuary Garden Design, who maintains the garden. “We talk about the flowers that need to be added or changed, because we like to keep the garden looking beautiful throughout the seasons,” she says. Taking this tour of the garden reminds Monika and Susan how much they like spending time together. They discover they are both free at G 4 p.m. and agree to meet for tea.

WHY DOES IT WORK?

WHO IS IT FOR?

Anyone looking to burn fat and elongate their muscles. Keep in mind, the company’s mantra is “Better sore than sorry.” Adds Freeman: “I was looking for the Pilates body but in a high-energy, loud, sweaty and small group environment. The Megaformer was the answer.”

THE BACKSTORY

In 2011, Freeman was looking for a workout that both strengthened, lengthened and toned. She discovered the Megaformer during a visit to L.A. and was instantly hooked. She opened her first SLT studio in Manhattan a year later. Today she has twenty-five studios spread across the East Coast and into Michigan. The Greenwich space opened last August. “We have been trying to open in Greenwich for five years,” she says. “The people here are ideal SLT clientele— fit-focused, fit-minded and hardworking. They appreciate an efficient and effective workout.” Introductory specials, first class $20, three-pack special $90. Single class $36; five classes $170; 10 classes $320; 20 classes $600. Private training is available.

THE BACKSTORY

Elliptica 1345 e. putnam ave., 2nd floor; ellipticastudios.com, 203-344-1193 A high-energy, low-impact ellipticalbased group cardio class in which clients can burn up to 750 calories in just one forty-five-minute session. “People really sweat,” says cofounder Laura Laboissonniere. “Your heart rate is up the whole time.”

The Greenwich studio, which opened in early 2017, is not the first fitness venture for Laura. She and her partner opened the original Elliptica in Fairfield in the fall of 2016. (She also owns two Pure Barre franchises in Fairfield County.) In addition to on-site childcare (available by reservation), the Greenwich studio offers two additional sixtyminute classes—one with a strength training add-on and one with a yoga add-on. The first visit is $15; two weeks unlimited for $49 (new clients only). A single session is $30. 10-class and 20-class packs are available, as are other membership options.

WHY DOES IT WORK?

The basic class follows a structured format similar to a spin class and involves warmups, hills, sprints and arm workouts using light weights. “It’s low impact but you are standing and engaging your core the whole time,” says Laboissonniere. With music playing in the background, the mood is upbeat and lively; the instructor drives the rpm and the beat, and you control the resistance. She says part of the appeal is the machine itself, which is easy to navigate. The other draw? “It’s fun and the cardio-high is addictive.”

Anyone who wants to be more active and greenwichmag.com

CONTRIBUTED

In a nutshell: The workout, which is done entirely on the Megaformer, activates the body’s slow-twitch muscle fibers through slow, fat-burning movements. “They are responsible for strengthening your muscles without the appearance of bulk,” says SLT founder and owner Amanda Freeman. The pace throughout is intense and done under the guidance of a trainer. “We do fast transitions between the moves, so your heart rate stays up the whole time.” The end result is more defined muscle development and increased stamina.

WHY DOES IT WORK?

After an initial assessment, the trainercoaches come up with an individualized workout plan that is designed to meet each client’s goals. First things first: mastering technique, developing strength and increasing mobility. From there, the plan will evolve incorporating more advanced training sessions, using complex lifting techniques. Both Belli and cofounder Shawn Harris have extensive backgrounds in personal training and coaching competitive sports; the gym excels in creating strength and conditioning programs for athletes of all ages. “Our clients appreciate our no-gimmick approach,” says Belli. “We preach patience and consistency.”

WHO IS IT FOR?

Anyone and everyone. “We train fifth graders to seventy-year-olds,” says Belli. The six coaches all have degrees in exercise science, among other certifications. “Sessions cater to the individual.” In the summer, the gym runs a group football workout for high school kids that lasts eight weeks.

THE BACKSTORY

Mason Street opened in January 2016, with nearly 5,000 square feet of space. On average, there are four to six clients max on the floor at any one time. Each customtailored session lasts approximately one hour.

Whether they are working with student-athletes or folks looking to up their fitness level, the focus is on one-on-one training rather than group classes.

Those who are looking for a whole-body workout that combines mental fitness and physical fitness. Clients range in age from fifteen to sixty-plus. “You go at your own pace,” says Edmond. “It’s not like gyms where the mantra is ‘go hard or go home.’”

THE BACKSTORY

Cofounded by friends and business partners Jim Perry, a lifelong Riverside resident, and Jonathan Edmond, a martial arts specialist with a background in personal training. They had dreamed about opening a space that would enable them to bring their passion for boxing to the community. The studio opened in June of 2017, and classes are limited to ten people. “While other gyms have you sharing equipment and moving from one station to another, we prepare the floor with your own individual sets of weights and props to match your intensity level,” says Edmond. “But we all do the same exercises together, making it a welcoming space for everyone.” From $38 per class, including gloves. “We wrap the hands professionally,” says Edmond. “Clients say, ‘Wow, I feel tough all of a sudden.’” »

Launched in Italy in 2016, Reaxing is an innovative fitness program that utilizes “sudden dynamic impulse technology” (unstable surfaces and equipment) to enhance stability and motor reflexes. Chelsea Piers is the brand’s first U.S. outpost.

5 OsteosStrong Greenwich 126 e. Putnam putnamAve., ave., 126 East osteostrong.me, osteostrong.me, 203-900-1661 203-900-1661 A system designed to help ward off osteoporosis (or at least prevent bone loss) through a process known as osteogenic loading, which triggers bone building at a cellular level

WHY DOES IT WORK?

Under the supervision of a specially trained coach, clients spend approximately ten to fifteen minutes total on four machines. Each targets specific areas of the body—upper, core, lower and postural. In addition to bone strength, the workout builds muscle density and healthier tendons and ligaments, which benefit posture and overall stability. “Our clients report feeling better in all areas of their lives,” says Christine Moffatt, partner and chief development officer.

mother who was suffering from bone loss. When he learned that gymnasts have higher bone density than the general population, he theorized it was because of the high-impact nature of the sport. He set out to design weight-resistance machines that would have the same effect but in a less jarring way. The Greenwich outpost opened last October. $219 monthly for silver membership, gold is $229 and platinum is $249. Discounts available for veterans and families. A sign-up fee of $299 includes a Dexa Scan at LiveLearnRx or an athletic evaluation at Greenwich Sports Medicine.

Each piece of equipment challenges your neuromuscular system in a different way. They can be used individually or in a group. The Reaxing board, for instance, moves in unpredictable ways (either programmed by the user or by a trainer), forcing clients to anticipate and stay upright by recruiting different muscle groups. Liquid-filled fluid balls are challenging to lift because the liquid moves around. Reaxing lights, which condition and train your senses, are set up in various patterns; when a light blinks, a client has to tag it before going on to the next blinking light. “It’s really fun,” says Monica Concha, Group Fitness Manager and a Reaxing certified coach.

“We’ve never wavered from our philosophy and mission,” says Vitale. “All of our clients are trained like athletes, and we train our athletes, we don’t just work them out.” After an initial assessment, each client receives a customized workout plan with a distinct goal in mind. “The goal may change, but the philosophy never does.” This holds true whether you’re a competitive cyclist, an aspiring triathlete, or a student who wants to make a high school sports team.

To tame frizz and attain a smoother look, use Oribe’s Supershine Moisturizing Cream and run it from the mid shaft to the ends of the hair.”
