eople often think of a new year as the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. We reflect on resolutions, set goals for ourselves, and sometimes get started on a new path in life. All of these topics are discussed in this issue—from weight loss (page 42) to getting organized (page 50) to caring for your skin (page 16) and your kids’ mental health (page 11). But this issue also marks the end of a chapter for New Canaan Darien Magazine with the departure of my highly respected predecessor, Julee Kaplan. After getting to know Julee over the last couple of months (and reading her “Love Letter” to our readers in the last issue), I am reminded, once again, that this community is made up of some of the most talented, intelligent and caring individuals I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. In the 15 years that I’ve lived here, I have volunteered side by side with everyone from CEOs to newscasters to bestselling authors. I have been inspired
by the numerous nonprofits that have been founded here and our community’s generosity when it comes to supporting them. I have witnessed well-known designers, artists and chefs donate their talents to local worthy causes. Last but not least, we have all benefitted from an incredibly accomplished group of stay-at-home parents who give their time and expertise to improve our community in countless ways. Having been an avid reader of NC/D Magazine for over a decade, I have loved learning about many of those people in these pages. And as my chapter at this publication begins, I will continue Julee’s work of celebrating the amazing people who call New Canaan, Darien, and Rowayton “home.”

eporting from the front lines of war to the trenches of parenting, journalist and Darien resident REENA NINAN is part of a new mission: “To democratize mental health around the world.” Ninan, along with renowned psychologist DR. LISA DAMOUR, co-hosts the popular podcast Ask Lisa: The Psychology of Parenting.
The weekly podcast, which debuted during the summer of 2020, answers real-life questions from listeners on topics ranging from achievement pressure and teenage drug use to building self-esteem and navigating social media. A former White House and foreign correspondent, Ninan “gets the answers parents need,” while Damour— New York Times bestselling author of Untangled, Under Pressure and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers—shares her expertise and a practical approach to parenting. This past May, Dr. Lisa Damour and Reena Ninan spoke to parents at Darien High School about the challenges of raising teenagers.
“I’ve practiced for nearly 30 years as a clinician, but it doesn’t matter what you know if you can’t share information that feels kind, accessible and doable,” says Damour. “Reena does the most extraordinary job of being the ‘every parent.’ She asks the right questions and completes that conversation by standing in for the listener.” One of the top parenting podcasts in the United States, Ask Lisa is resonating globally as well. Recently, the podcast reached the No.1 spot in South Korea, Romania and the Dominican Republic. It has also earned Top 3 honors in countries like Chile, India, Japan, Indonesia, Mozambique and Switzerland. “As a longtime foreign affairs correspondent, seeing this has given me so much pride,” says Ninan. “Across the world, the podcast is changing the way people are looking at parenting and have access to information.” While Ask Lisa has a worldwide reach, it also hits close to home. Ninan has lived in Darien with her family since 2016, and she has two children in middle school. Damour also has two children, one in college, and another in middle school. Although she lives
in Cleveland, Damour also has ties to the community. She used to visit her grandparents in Darien during summer vacations, and her mother attended Darien High School. To address the mental health issues affecting local families, Damour and Ninan spoke at the high school. “There's been tremendous support and love for this podcast from within the town,” says Ninan. “More than 700 people came to the Darien High School event last May for our parenting discussion. People are hungry to connect and find community.”
The duo first met at CBS News, when Ninan would interview Damour as an expert and regular contributor. “We had such a great chemistry,” says Damour. “We became friends through that, and it was a very natural thing to work together.” Concerned about the pandemic’s impact on mental health, Damour enlisted Ninan to help her with the podcast in 2020. The timing was serendipitous, as Ninan had recently left her job to start a production company called Good Trouble Productions. The first podcast tackled “Parenting
During a Pandemic,” and the topics continue to reflect what is timely and top-of-mind. “I’ve had people stop me at the grocery store to tell me how it's changed their parenting, and also how it helped them make it through the COVID years.” says Ninan. “We are blown away by how much it’s grown, and we feel like we’re just getting started.” Ask Lisa will continue to bring in leading experts for the podcast, in addition to choosing topics based on listener requests. The hosts also remain focused on their goal “to democratize mental health.” Damour works in collaboration with UNICEF, which helps children in more than 190 countries and territories. “From Day 1, Dr. Lisa has been reaching out to those who are disadvantaged and to communities of color,” says Ninan. “This has been a cornerstone for her, and she wants to take this message to people who are overlooked.” When asked about her approach, Damour says it’s important to share information about “typical and expected development” to effectively help parents. “A lot of people hope that normal means easy in family life. Normal has never meant easy,” says Damour. “We like to level-set. Even on a good day, raising kids is a hard thing to do.”

OVME KISS ($40) OVME, DARIEN Hyaluronic acid and arnica extract keep lips hydrated during dry winter months and heal cracked, chapped lips. “Wear the balm daily, alone or layered under lipstick,” says Casey Stotler, RN, aesthetic practitioner at OVME. “It has a pleasantly subtle citrus flavor, and won’t cause stinging or irritation.” If you’re hitting the slopes, don’t forget to dab sunscreen over the balm for added protection.
COLD WEATHER SKIN CURES CHILLY TEMPERATURES CALL FOR SOOTHING, HYDRATING INGREDIENTS THAT KEEP SKIN CALM ALL WINTER LONG
CAUDALÍE PREMIER CRU ANTI-AGING CREAM MOISTURIZER ($139) LANPHIER, DARIEN This nourishing cream contains Caudalíe’s patented TET8 technology to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, boost firmness and elasticity and lighten dark spots. “It’s rich without being greasy, and is great for dry skin,” says Lanphier esthetician Daga Sielska. “I recommend always using a serum before applying the cream to help the ingredients penetrate more deeply.”
ERNO LASZLO HYDRAPHEL SKIN SUPPLEMENT ($75) WILLIAMS DAY SPA, DARIEN “People often think of toners as a strong astringent, but the Erno Laszlo Hydraphel Skin Supplement is the opposite of that,” says Julie Ambrosi, owner of Williams Day Spa. “This silky, hydrating toner improves dryness and peeling, and prepares the skin to absorb serum and moisturizer.” After cleansing and before applying serum and moisturizer, apply the toner with a cotton ball—the potent combination of provitamin B5, calming comfrey root and glycerin (which attracts moisture to the skin and traps it there) will help keep winter skin supple.

BIOLOGIQUE-RECHERCHE COLOSTRUM VG SÉRUM ($152)
HIGHERDOSE RED LIGHT FACE MASK ($349)
“The sérum contains very small molecules that allow ingredients to penetrate deep within the skin to restore lipids (fats) that protect the skin and increase hydration,” says Barbara Aquino, BA Skin Lab founder and master esthetician. Apply the sérum in the morning before smoothing on its sister product, Biologique-Recherche Crème Dermo RL (which contains a moisturizing blend of lipids, shea butter and grapeseed extract), and then apply the sérum again in the evening, before night cream.
The beauty of this cordless mask is that the comfortable straps allow you to wear it while working out, cooking dinner…or whatever else you have to do around the house! “The combination of red and near infrared light boosts cell renewal, collagen and elastin production. It also reduces redness, fine lines and wrinkles—and gives dull winter skin a radiant glow,” says Bluemercury, New Canaan, esthetician Mallory Frangione. Wear the mask between 10 and 20 minutes, three to five times a week.

A Shore Thing Westport-based CAILINI COASTAL is making waves with wallpaper, and soon, an upcoming space in Darien’s Corbin District
F
ounder and recent Westport transplant Meg Young launched Cailini Coastal to address what she saw as a gap in the luxury coastal home décor and furnishings market, dominated by a handful of national brands. Blending the styles from the seaside communities she knew—both in California and on the East Coast—she carved out a niche with offerings that reflect her fresh perspective on all things nautical, bringing the beauty of local beaches to customers worldwide through her e-commerce site. She hoped to capture the feeling of taking a leisurely stroll through a charming shoreline boutique, where each piece has a story to tell. As the wallcoverings category continued to grow, Young responded by expanding her assortment with her own line. The seven-piece collection was inspired by quintessential coastal
elements, from classic stripes and sailboats to seashells and blooming hydrangeas. Most are printed on grasscloth and paperweave, textures that she’d loved but had trouble finding without a trade account. And the company’s mission extends beyond offering stylish home décor. The brand is deeply committed to philanthropy, partnering with Family Promise, a national nonprofit aiding low-income families and those experiencing homelessness. Its dedication led to substantial donations, exceeding $70,000 since its 2020 launch. After working with Lynn Morgan Design on her own home, Young is enlisting teh designer to get her brick-and-mortar store up and running. Stay tuned for updates on the shop, as well as product launches currently in the works. cailinicoastal.com —Samantha Yanks

Speaking the Language To save you a Google search, we break down some of the LATEST TRENDS IN TRAVEL We spoke with Amanda Frasier, president of ratings for Forbes Travel Guide, who tells us, “We see business travelers emphasizing work-life balance and making a business trip an extended travel experience.” The pandemic gave us Zoom and the ability to work remotely. As a result, more Americans are taking their vacation days, even if they have to occasionally work. Several governments worldwide have created Digital Nomad Visas. Simply put, these allow
Canal share? They are surprising bedfellows in the travel trends for the coming year.
The most significant trend over the last three years— dealing with uncertainty—is here to stay. But the good news is that there are plenty of new adventures awaiting you. First, there's some lingo you'll need to know. New travel experiences include “bleisure” (blending business and leisure travel), “set-jetting” (think White Lotus season two in Sicily) and “collabs” (fashion, art and hotels all in bed together). Here’s a quick rundown to help you feel extra hip at the next cocktail party.
you to work remotely in a country without paying local taxes for a specified period of time. But you need to do more than just show up with your laptop and call yourself a digital nomad. The application process varies by country. For example, you can live in Antigua for two years and work your way around the islands' 365 beaches. To qualify, you must own a “location independent business” and/or work remotely for a company based outside Antigua and Barbuda. You need to earn at least $50,000 annually and
have a travel/health insurance plan.
Se t-J e t t i n g According to a trend report by Expedia, 39 percent of global travelers have booked trips based on films or streamed shows. To wit, Sicily was overrun last summer by Jennifer Coolidge wannabes. If you haven’t watched White Lotus, this is your cue to finally stream it. Millennials and Gen Z also rely on social media to plan travel in a way their parents don’t. According to a report by the World Travel

and Tourism Council and Deloitte, almost 40 percent of travelers in their mid-twenties or younger use social media platforms to plan holidays, compared to 29 percent for older generations. Mongolia, for example, has experienced a tourism boom of young travelers drawn by the #gobidesert hashtag. Mongolia’s tourism board set its sights on attracting a million tourists annually and launched a digital campaign targeting travelers aged twentythree to forty. Over the past several years, almost half of the country’s tourists have been under forty. This is likely because grown-ups don't want to sleep in yurts with yaks. But with Genghis Khan getting a namesake $650 million international airport, a direct U.S. flight and a slew of new luxury lodging, that will soon change. Sorry kids, but your parents will probably ruin Mongolia for you. The younger set may be looking for Instaworthy destinations, but the adults in the room are looking for the next hotspot before it actually becomes a hotspot. While everyone knows someone who’s recently been to Cartagena or Croatia, you’ll soon know someone who’s been to Casco Viejo, Panama City’s brightly colored historic downtown. Panama is a heady combination of sexy skyscrapers, UNESCO heritage sites and easily reachable wild islands. Copa Air offers fivehour nonstop flights to Panama City from New York; the U.S. dollar is one of the national currencies and the Isla Secas resort, just off the coast, was named Best Resort and Best Island in Central and South America in 2023 by Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. We’ll see you there.
Collabs Art and travel have always been inextricably linked in the luxury world. Find an expensive boutique hotel that’s well-loved by the jet set, and you'll likely find a private art collection worth more than the building itself. The venerable Ocean House recently hung an impressive set of Bemelmans. If the name rings a bell, but you can’t place it, Ludwig Bemelman illustrated the famous Madeline series; he also painted the murals in his namesake piano bar at the Carlyle Hotel in exchange for rooms when it opened in the 1940s. The new Bemelmans Gallery at Ocean House is the most extensive permanent private collection of work by Ludwig Bemelmans on public display in North America. Owners Chuck and Deborah Royce went to great lengths to pull together a never-beforeseen assemblage of his work. You don't need to be a guest of the hotel to enjoy it. But if you book the singular Bemelmans suite, you’ll wake up amongst original pieces of his artwork and a view of the Atlantic. In Tulum, art collector Lio Malca bought Pablo Escobar’s abandoned mansion and reimagined it as a beachfront boutique hotel with expensive contemporary art dotted around the property. Works from noted artists like Kaws, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf and others sit watch over the lobby and beach. Boutiques in the French Riviera weren’t just selling designer togs last summer. Several beach clubs were transformed into high-fashion infused spots with products like Dior ice cream, Dolce & Gabbana towels and Valentino sun loungers. Two trends collided when the Four Seasons in Sicily partnered with
Dolce & Gabbana for the most instagrammable pool décor on the continent. If the Riviera isn’t in future travel plans, the Beverly Hills Hotel will likely host a Dior pop up next summer, and you can snag your own Dior surfboard, yoga mat or just enjoy a cone of Dior ice cream. We’re told the flavors were coconut, pineapple, mango and money.

ellness expert Amber Kemp believes in sharing her secrets for a better life. With a “health is wealth” mentality, she helps clients pursue a “long, healthy and happy lifestyle” at her Darien-based longevity center, CHECK Body-Mind. Since opening in March 2022, Kemp’s business has grown—as has overall awareness of self-care and well-being. “Mental health has become of great importance, especially after the pandemic,” says Kemp. “It is selfless to invest in things that will give you more energy and help maintain a healthy state of mind.” According to Kesti Aysseh, executive director of the Darien Chamber of Commerce, “The wellness space has exploded” in town and beyond. “CHECK Body-Mind is a great addition to Darien and winner of our New Business Award last year.” She adds that she particularly loves the welcoming staff and
atmosphere at the Post Road location. Using alternative and holistic health methods, Kemp and her team focus on everything from athletic recovery to body-mind wellness. “We offer services with a comprehensive list of benefits,” she says, “including cellular rejuvenation, inflammation relief, muscle recovery, anti-aging, reduction in symptoms caused by auto-immune disorders, and much more.” The two most requested treatments are LED light therapy and vitamin IV drips. Other popular services include cryotherapy, Reiki energy healing, massage therapy, facials, nutrition coaching and cryo body-slimming and toning. There’s even a meditation device, said to restore the body's energy balance, boost the immune system and relieve stress. “Our Tachyon meditation chamber entails an advanced quantum meditation and was the 11th professional chamber in the United States,” explains Kemp. “I am humbled and grateful to see many incredible transformations in the Tachyon chamber. These moments are what keep my passion fueled.” Kemp, who faced health problems growing up, sought out holistic methods as a teenager and took up yoga. Inspired by the discipline, she

traveled to Nepal in 2014 for authentic yoga training and became certified as an instructor. Shortly thereafter, she added Reiki practitioner and massage therapist to her wellness résumé. “Preventative wellness became my lifestyle after struggling with various health issues as a child,” says Kemp. “My own healing experience, combined with an inner calling to help others, pulled me forward in every next step.” Also certified as a mindfulness coach, clinical hypnotherapist and life coach, Kemp’s expertise and her eagerness to help people motivated her to launch the business. “My passion for wellness progressed into a desire for a community-based center that provides highly efficient and effective treatments in a space that feels like a serene oasis,” she explains. Clients can choose from three different membership options featuring monthly services, loyalty rewards and special pricing on premium treatments. Alternatively, guests are encouraged to come for a tour and can make appointments without being a member. To kick off 2024 and celebrate the center’s two-year anniversary, Kemp will offer new client specials, introductory offers and wellness packages with Cryoskin™ body slimming and toning, cryofacials and more. Promotions are planned from January through March, and the most up-to-date specials will be announced on Instagram @checkbodymind as well as on their website (checkbodymind.com). More surprises are in the works, but Kemp is keeping them secret for now. “We are bringing in two highly requested treatments,” she says. “I’ll give you a hint—an infrared sauna is one of them.”

ROCKWELL ON ICE NEW CANAAN’S PICTURE-PERFECT OUTDOOR RINK IN WAVENY PARK b y e il e e n m u rph y

(project manager). “There are all sorts of challenges to an open-air rink,” Bettino says. But this team of volunteers, along with rink directors Kerra Smith and Sarah Arestia, got to work finding solutions. The first year, the rink didn't open. The second year, it opened later than anticipated. But trial and error allowed the team to iron out the kinks and this year they expect to be open by press time—if Mother Nature cooperates, of course! The official name of the rink is the “Boucher Community Ice Rink,” thanks to a generous donation by former State Senator Toni Boucher, in honor of her husband. That word “community” is woven into the fabric of this project. “I love that this rink gets kids out of the house and out into the community,” Bettino says. Goodman agrees: “There are not many community activities where you will see the parents out there participating along with the kids.” In addition to providing family fun for residents from both New Canaan and the surrounding area, the team also felt that making it easily accessible was an important part of a “community” rink. Last year they organized a skate swap but this year they plan to have rentals available for kids up to around age 12. They will also be adding group and private lessons. “We are always trying to find

ways to make it as easy as possible for people to come," says Bettino. Local families have mirrored that sentiment, anonymously donating season passes to others in financial need. Season passes are available online and in-person. You can also purchase a wristband on-site that will give you access to the rink for the entire day. “Unlike many indoor rinks, there is no set Open Skate hour here,” Goodman notes. “We want people to come and stay for a while.” In addition to season/ day passes, there are special group discounts and even birthday party options. orman Rockwell paintings evoke a sense of nostalgia in people—whether they bring back memories from your own childhood or stir a desire to experience life before technology took over. This is the feeling Rita Bettino got when she first heard about plans for a community ice rink in New Canaan. “I remember the excitement when they put up the sign by the pond that said skating was open,” Bettino recalls of growing up in Valhalla, New York. So when she heard that long-time New Canaan resident Gene Goodman was heading up a project to bring a community rink to town, she pictured a Rockwell scene, with families drinking hot cocoa and skating under twinkling lights. She raised her hand to help and, it turned out, Goodman would need all the help he could get! Goodman has lived in New Canaan since 1979. He and his wife Susan raised five children in town. He served on the Board of Ed for 16 years and the Parks & Recreation committee for seven years. It was at a Parks & Rec meeting back in 2017 that someone suggested an outdoor ice rink. Goodman’s support for the idea turned into a six-year passion project. Other volunteers stepped up to make this dream a reality, namely State Representative Tom O’Dea (treasurer), Bettino (secretary), and Scott Roe

At Sur La Table Darien, Chef Yves Lovinski (center) teaches more than just how to follow a recipe. We learned proper knife skills and ingredient pairing, among other things.
S
ur La Table’s Chef Yves Lovinsky describes the company’s new Darien store as “not just a shopping destination—it’s an entire experience.” On a recent visit with former NC/D editor Julee Kaplan, we had an opportunity to sample that experience by attending a cooking class in the beautiful light-filled kitchen at the new Darien Commons location.

eat ROASTED CARROTS with PRESERVED LEMONS and FETA YIELD: 4 SERVINGS This roasting method will soon be your favorite way to prepare summer carrots. It is a simple dish where the quality of ingredients is paramount. When purchasing, look for firm carrots with bright green bushy tops and only use the best quality seasonings available.
_______ 1 tablespoon harissa paste 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt plus more as needed 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons preserved lemon, finely chopped 1 1/2 pounds fresh carrots, peeled, stemmed, cut lengthwise into four-inch long pieces 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped
_______ Takeaway tips from the chef: Shrimp (above) is finished cooking when the tip and the tail curl and touch. When building a plate, such as the roasted carrots (left), you should have a balance of textures and flavors.
Lovinsky was joined by Chef Emily Green, resident chef at Sur La Table in New York. Ahead of our visit, Green helped to pick a sampling of recipes from the company’s upcoming winter offerings: prawns with chermoula sauce, roasted carrots with preserved lemons and feta and a kale and grapefruit salad with white wine vinaigrette. The class offerings change regularly in order to incorporate fresh, seasonal ingredients and highlight different themes and holidays. When we arrived at the kitchen, our workstations were perfectly prepared—from the kitchen tools we'd be using to the pre-measured ingredients. The chefs led us through the recipes step by step while sharing an abundance of knowledge they’ve gained throughout their personal and professional cooking histories. In addition to the proper way to prepare the
recipe, the chefs described the food science behind how the ingredients interact, they demonstrated proper knife skills, defined and explained culinary terms, advised on how to care for your kitchen tools and so much more. Julee is a more skillfull cook than I am, but we both walked away from the class having learned new things. The best part of the experience, of course, was sampling our culinary creations once they were done. After complimenting ourselves for a job well done, we made a beeline for the shop to pick up all the cool kitchen gadgets and some of the ingredients we had used in class that we now couldn’t live without. While, as Lovinsky mentioned, this new location is an “entire experience,” anyone who has been to a Sur La Table before knows the shopping is pretty incredible as well.
Preheat oven to 425°F and place a rack in the middle. Line a rimmed baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper. In a large bowl, add harissa, oil, salt, pepper and lemon; whisk to combine. Add carrots and toss to coat with seasoning. Spread carrots out on the prepared baking sheet. Transfer to oven and roast until carrots are caramelized; begin checking at 20 minutes and stir as necessary. To serve: Toss carrots with any pan juices and transfer to a serving platter or individual plates. Top with crumbled feta and fresh mint.

eat olive oil and a small pinch of kosher salt. Mix to combine and set aside for ten minutes. To prepare the salad, layer the grapefruit, crumbled cheese, pistachios and green onions over the kale. Gently combine. In a small glass bowl, combine the vinegar, grapefruit juice, honey, Dijon mustard and salt and pepper. Whisk together. While whisking, slowly stream in the olive oil to combine. Taste and adjust flavors if needed. Add a pinch of salt if it’s bland or extra grapefruit juice if the Dijon is too strong for your preference. Drizzle salad dressing over the salad. Mix gently to combine. Serve immediately.
PRAWNS WITH CHERMOULA SAUCE YIELD: 4 SERVINGS Chermoula is a traditional sauce for seafood in Moroccan recipes, whether fried, cooked with vegetables in a tagine or baked. It consists of coriander, garlic, sweet and hot peppers, cumin and coarse salt mixed with lemon juice and olive oil.
CHERMOULA SAUCE: 1 preserved lemon, flesh removed, skin roughly chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 cup cilantro, chopped 1 teaspoon saffron threads, soaked in 2 tablespoons hot water 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon cumin seeds, toasted 4 tablespoons olive oil 4 tablespoons lemon juice Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
PRAWNS: 1 pound large prawns, shelled and deveined Olive oil, for brushing grill pan Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper _______ To prepare chermoula sauce: To the bowl of a food processor fitted with a metal blade, add all sauce ingredients and process until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. To grill prawns: Using paper towels, pat prawns dry. Season prawns liberally with salt and pepper. Add prawns to a preheated grill pan set over medium-high heat, brush with oil. Grill prawns until cooked through, about two to three minutes Using tongs, transfer prawns to a medium bowl with chermoula, and toss to coat. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Once in the Roth, that money can continue to grow tax-free. There are a few caveats, says Fitzgerald, who holds 529 accounts for each of his two children. For example, the plan has to have been open for at least 15 years, transfers are subject to Roth annual contribution limits (up to $7,000 in 2024) and beneficiaries must have earned income at least equal to the amount transferred.

SPECIAL PROMOTION*
Estate Planning and Charitable Giving Charitable giving is a long-standing tradition in the United States and can be an important component of an estate plan as a means of giving back to the community and leaving behind an enduring philanthropic legacy. As Barbara Bush once noted, “giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our mind to the unexplained worlds occupied by the needs of others.” While there are many personal and altruistic reasons for giving, many affluent donors also are motivated by the tax savings that can be associated with a charitable gift.
Tax Incentives for Charitable Giving
Helping Affluent Individuals and Families
The Internal Revenue Code provides tax incentives to encourage charitable giving. Generally, the tax incentives are more favorable if a charitable gift is made (i) during the donor’s lifetime (rather than at death), (ii) to a public charity (rather than a private foundation), and (iii) with highly appreciated property held long-term (rather than cash).
Cummings & Lockwood’s private clients attorneys can assist individuals and families with all aspects of their charitable giving and help them to meet their philanthropic goals as part of the estate and tax planning process.
Following are some of the key tax advantages associated with philanthropic giving:
400
6107
In assisting our clients, we pay special attention to the client’s overall plan to be sure that the particular charitable strategy achieves the client’s intended goals for the gift. This may take the form of a simple one-time gift during lifetime or at death or a more complex charitable strategy.
• Income Tax: A donor may be entitled to an income tax charitable deduction made to a qualified charity (an organization recognized as tax-exempt in the pursuit of philanthropic, non-profit or civic activities) as long as the donor does not receive anything in return. There are annual caps that limit the total amount of charitable contribution deductions.
Our trusts and estates attorneys can help clients in the creation, implementation, monitoring and administration of various charitable gifts and structures, such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and private foundations, as well as in structuring pledges and gifts to public charities.
• Estate Tax: Generally, contributions to organizations that qualify for the income tax deduction also qualify for the federal estate tax charitable deduction. For estate tax purposes, there are no limitations on the amount of the deduction for qualifying contributions.
To learn more about incorporating charitable giving into your estate plan, please contact one of our private clients attorneys by visiting our website at www.cl-law.com or by calling one of our Connecticut offices below.
• Gift Tax: Similarly, contributions to organizations that qualify for the income tax deduction also qualify for the federal gift tax charitable deduction. For gift tax purposes, there are no limitations on the amount of the deduction for qualifying contributions.

They were married by Reverend Timothy O’Brien in an intimate ceremony at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan, where the bride grew up. The couple renewed their vows the next day in front of family and friends at Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Tarrytown, New York. The bride, daughter of Michael and Betsy Greene of New Canaan, wore her mother’s veil to the church ceremony and her bouquet was wrapped in her christening bonnet, which is an Irish tradition. The groom is the son of James and Mary Kay Domo of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

eight loss drugs are certainly not a new phenomenon. The concept of taking medication to lose weight has been in development for almost a century. The drugs currently on the market, however, including the widely known Ozempic, have gained our attention both locally and nationally—and not just for the advertising jingle that tends to get caught in your head. For nearly 20 years, these drugs have been used to treat diabetic patients. They are now being prescribed to non-diabetic patients looking to achieve weight-loss goals quickly. In clinical trials, these drugs have shown other benefits, like reducing cardiovascular events such as heart attacks. This may all sound pretty miraculous, but we also know that these drugs produce some uncomfortable short-term side effects. More time is needed to understand the long-term side effects. While it is important to closely monitor potential side effects, these drugs are certainly having a dramatic effect on people—both physically and emotionally. There are “countless reasons [why] some people struggle with weight and others don’t,” says Dr. Stephanie Ortiz Page, director of Bariatric and Metabolic Medicine at Nuvance Health. Fluctuating hormones, health issues, injuries, medications, insulin resistance and genetics can all contribute to weight issues. “Having to live with the stigma that comes with being overweight can take a tremendous toll on one’s physical and emotional well-being,” she adds. Being overweight increases the risk for numerous health issues ranging from heart disease to cancer. The rate of obesity in Connecticut currently stands at 30 percent and soars up to 42 percent nationally. Dr. Neil Floch, director of bariatric surgery at Greenwich Hospital and associate professor of surgery at Yale School of Medicine, has been working with patients to fight the obesity battle for several years. He claims that 86 percent of people with diabetes are treated with medications, yet only two percent of people struggling with obesity are treated with medication. “The medications are extremely helpful for patients struggling with weight and also for patients who have had bariatric surgery and regained weight,” he says. “This is a real game changer.”

HOW THEY WORK
As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to approve these medications, demand for them is skyrocketing. In addition to Ozempic, you have likely heard the names Wegovy and Mounjaro (now also being sold under the brand name Zepbound). All of these drugs are said to suppress one’s appetite and reduce cravings for unhealthy and fatty foods using the active ingredient semaglutide. Semaglutides mimic the effects of the naturally occurring hormone in your body called GLP-1. This hormone helps to control blood sugar by increasing the release of insulin by the pancreas and lowering the release of glucagon. By reducing blood sugar, the body can shed pounds more quickly. Ozempic and Wegovy are essentially the same drugs, with both being distributed through at-home injections. The differences lie in the dosage levels and what health issues the drugs are prescribed for. Ozempic was given FDA approval to treat patients with type-2 diabetes. Wegovy, which is prescribed at a slightly higher dosage, is intended for the management of chronic weight issues. "Traditionally, the American Diabetes Association used metformin as the first line of defense for insulin resistance issues,” says Dr. Maria Ceclia Asnis, director of the medical weight-loss program at Stamford Hospital, "but recently amended their recommendation and GLP-1 receptors are now being used for the same purpose and have a similar level of efficacy in reducing blood sugar and improving cardiovascular health.”

MORE WEIGHT LOSS DRUG OPTIONS
A drug called tirzepatide first received FDA approval for treating diabetes in May 2022 and more recently was approved for weight loss in November 2023. This new and possibly even more-effective drug is sold under the name Mounjaro (for diabetes) and Zepbound (for weight loss). It works by activating not only the GLP-1 receptors, but also those of another natural hormone called GIP. And these are not the only drugs that are being used for weight loss these days. There is Qsymia and the seizure medication Topamax. There is also Contrave, a combination of the smoking-cessation antidepressant found in Wellbutrin and Naltrexone, a medication used to treat alcohol and opioid disorders. Some of these, like Naltrexone, have shown to be effective for smaller amounts of weight loss, but “if someone has 30 or 40 pounds to lose, I would prescribe a GLP-1 agonist such as semaglutide or tirzepatide,” Dr. Floch says.

12/11/23 4:48 PM
“This is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” says Dr. Page, who believes these drugs are a major advancement in the management and treatment of weight loss. “However, it is not the right drug for everyone struggling with obesity.” As with any medication, there are side effects and risks. Some people may have little to no reaction, while others may suffer from much more uncomfortable side effects. It is important to seek the guidance of a specialized and well-informed physician who will help you weigh the health implications that come with being overweight versus the negative effects that can potentially arise when being on a weight-loss drug. Unfortunately, there are numerous online providers that are not doing their due diligence and are prescribing medications in unsafe ways. Each patient’s personal physical and emotional health history needs to be carefully considered by a professional, especially when it comes to a background of disordered eating. The same way these drugs can help to quiet cravings and speed up metabolism, they can also trigger those with a history of anorexia. “Working with a mental health professional to develop insight into what core issues might be feeding into weight struggles can help create awareness into the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are contributing to the larger issue,” says Ellen Arcamone, a licensed clinical social worker at Bluestone Psychiatry in New Canaan. “Once identified, work can begin toward creating effective strategies and solutions to make changes for the long term.” For perimenopausal and menopausal women, hormonal imbalances and a slowing metabolism can often make weight-loss goals feel unattainable. “Even for those who might just have five to ten pounds to lose, if they are gaining weight steadily, even just one or two pounds a year is going to add up over time,” says Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, a board-certified OB/GYN at Stamford Hospital. “We do know the numerous long-term health implications of weight gain and they can be really profound. But should we consider these medications for everyone at this point?” Ghofrany believes that time will tell, but stresses the importance of considering each patient’s specific situation to decide the risks versus the rewards.
SIDE EFFECTS:
ARE THEY FOR ME?
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY
The most common side effects include abdominal pain, constipation, nausea and vomiting. The more rare but also more severe side effects can be kidney failure, gallbladder issues, thyroid tumors, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, gastroparesis, hypoglycemia, heart palpitations, vision changes and depression. This list of possible side effects can seem daunting, so it’s also important to note that for many patients, doctors are also seeing significant health benefits—like lower cholesterol (as much as 13 percent in diabetics) and blood pressure, better liver function numbers and improvements in blood sugar and fasting glucose. They have also seen improved cognitive repair, better quality of sleep and a reduction in heart failure symptoms. Early research has shown that these changes in some patients have enabled them to lower their dosage or even stop taking previously prescribed medications altogether. In addition to physical improvements, patients are also seeing emotional benefits. One local female patient in her mid-40s (who asked to remain anonymous) has been on one of these medications for about a year and a half and has had negligible side effects from the start. “For most of my life, I would look in a mirror and hate what was staring back at me,” she says. But the effects of the drugs have had on her body has improved her self-confidence. “I don’t feel like my weight is all anyone sees when I walk in a room,” she adds. “All of the food noise is gone, I no longer constantly think about food, about what I will eat next, about why I ate more than I know I should have. Some days I literally feel like I’m free.” Another female patient in her mid-50s says, “This medication allows me to generally eat healthily without thinking as much about it. I can have half of a cookie and not the whole box.” Some patients who have been put on restricted diets but still have difficulty losing weight have found themselves able to up their caloric intake and finally move the dial on the scale. They are suddenly able to eat normally for the first time in their lives.

NOT AN EASY FIX
While there are obvious health risks and rewards, there are also other crucial factors to consider when deciding whether these medications are right for you—namely accessibility, cost and commitment. Some patients find they are facing difficulty obtaining their prescriptions and frequently show up to pharmacies only to be told that their needed medication is out of stock. Many others are paying anywhere from $600 to $1,400 out of pocket per month. The hope is that as the FDA approves more of these drugs, these challenges will improve. “The great demand for this class of medication supports the need to manage and treat obesity and diabetes,” says Dr. Page. “My hope is that more health insurance companies will cover medications to treat obesity and then supply will improve.” These hurdles will need to be resolved in order for people to continue on these drugs long-term. While some patients who only needed to lose a small amount of weight have been successfully able to wean down their dosages or get off the medications altogether, these drugs are not intended for short-term use. Two-thirds of those who stop taking the meds will gain back the weight that they initially lost, especially if lifestyle and dietary changes haven’t been diligently implemented.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES WEIGHT IS SO MUCH MORE THAN CALORIES IN VS. CALORIES OUT."
- SARAH SWANBERG DOCTOR OF ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE MEDICINE AND INDIGO WELLNESS GROUP CO-FOUNDER
One of the side effects that is of concern with the long-term use of these drugs is muscle loss, which has been reported among many patients. While any type of rapid weight loss can impact muscle density, it can be amplified among patients being treated for diabetes and obesity. It is extremely important that anyone taking these drugs makes the proper lifestyle changes in regards to nutrition, exercise and mental health. “We really need multidisciplinary intervention in addition to medication,” says Dr. Ghofrany. “People should ensure that they are getting adequate mental health support about potential food-addiction issues, and that they are moving their bodies, especially with weights, because we know that there is a significant amount of muscle loss with rapid weight loss.” Sarah Swanberg, doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and cofounder of Indigo Wellness Group of Westport and Stamford, has worked with patients looking to achieve major weight loss for several years. “Weight is so much more than calories in vs. calories out, and we often see big changes just focusing on stress reduction, protein intake, hydration and mindful eating,” Swanberg says.

PROCEEDING WITH CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM
WE DON'T NATURAL TALK ABOUT OPTIONS WHAT Before attempting these drugs as a quick fix, one should consider that there are a number of foods that can help the body react in a similar way to the weight-loss drugs. Fiber, for instance, helps stimulate the GLP-1 hormone because it breaks down slowly as it moves through the body. That makes you feel full, therefore reducing cravings and suppressing the appetite. The best type of fiber for this effect is fermentable fiber, the kind found in oats, rye, barley, beans, peas and lentils. Pectin—which is found in fruits like green bananas, apples and pears— can also trigger weight loss. Dr. Katherine Wehri Takayasu, Darien-based functional medicine practitioner, explains that some patients experience “more satiety when increasing fiber (with psyllium husk most recently making a social media splash) because fiber increases a sense of fullness” and others have seen results using herbs like berberine. “It's important no matter where you are on your journey that you need to balance fiber, fat and protein in the diet so that you are keeping yourself full, satisfied and in metabolic balance,” she adds.
WEIGHT SOMEONE SHOULD BE; WE TALK ABOUT WHAT WEIGHT WOULD BE HEALTHIER."
All the professionals we spoke with ultimately feel that these drugs can be very helpful for people struggling with type-2 diabetes and obesity and will continue to monitor both short-term and long-term side effects. They also all stress the importance of making changes in your diet and exercise routine, as well as addressing any mental health issues you may be struggling with. Dr. Asnis likes to begin discussing this topic with her patients by talking about the science of weight. “I explain to my patients that there are things that are and are not completely in their control,” she says. “We don’t talk about what weight someone should be; we talk about what weight would be healthier. We talk about lifestyle, exercise and diet... and, yes, medications when appropriate. These drugs can be highly effective if prescribed the right way.”

or many of us, January is both a time of relief that we survived the holidays and mild panic about catching up and organizing our lives. Many of us try to begin anew by reorganizing our physical spaces, but while a tidy pantry is a wonderful thing, it can do little to alleviate the general anxiety that comes with being inundated. What if there were a way to feel recharged and calm amid the chaos of new school and activity schedules? According to Seana Turner, a Darien mom who has been a practicing professional organizer and productivity consultant for over 13 years, when you focus on reducing clutter in your home, inbox and schedule, it’s a game changer for your stress level.

Incorporate Daily Planning Time
ake five to ten minutes each morning to make and review your to-do list. It’s important to take a breath, look at your calendar, and list all the tasks you need to accomplish. “Most people have to-do lists that are incredibly long and can’t be completed in one day,” notes Turner. Therefore, use this planning time to extract a reasonable number of high-priority items from your main list and put them on today’s agenda. “It’s critical to make a daily task list that’s achievable,” she says. “Once the list is done, schedule everything into your calendar.” If your list is unrealistic, shorten it and move things to the following day. Be cognizant of calendar commitments. For example, don’t schedule a task-heavy day when you need to be in the car driving all afternoon. “At the end of each day, take stock in how you did. If you have a short list you can complete, you’ll feel better as you look back on your day and feel optimistic about tomorrow’s list,” she says. Review tomorrow’s items and refine that list as necessary. What about the week ahead? Turner recommends that you “just be familiar with the details of today and tomorrow, and on Friday give yourself a broad view of the following week.”
“IT’S CRITICAL TO MAKE A DAILY TASK LIST THAT’S ACHIEVABLE.”

If you tend to lose track of time easily, Turner suggests switching to an analog clock. “The physical act of watching clock hands move and seeing time pass creates time awareness and helps us to be task oriented,” she says.
2
nything in paper form should be considered mail: papers from work, teachers notes and homework from kids’ backpacks. “It’s not necessary to complete action items for paperwork right away, but it must be sorted every day,” advises Turner. Put all recyclables in the trash, then divide remaining papers into file folders labeled with these action categories: Read Through, Pay, File and Actions. Then, schedule a specific time in your week to execute jobs within each folder. “I add recurring routines on certain days of the week, such as wash clothes on Wednesdays, file and pay bills on Fridays,” says Turner. The “Read” folder can be brought along on errands where you might have some downtime, like waiting in the carpool line or at the doctor’s office. Email, like paper, is also a delivery system that brings tasks to you, so it needs to be dealt with like physical mail. “Don’t allow your email inbox to become your to-do list,” she warns. When checking email, your calendar and task list should be nearby so you can transfer actionable items into one of your labeled folders, or write down a date or appointment in your calendar. “I also use the rule of thumb that if you can take care of something little in under two minutes, do it and cross it off your list,” recommends Turner. As time-consuming tasks come up, such as filling out forms, write down “fill out paperwork” on your to-do list for either that day or the next. Turner warns against constantly checking e-mail while on the go. “Don’t let your e-mails get marked as ‘read’ and then disappear down the nonstop stream of incoming emails,” she advises. “Schedule a block of time, if possible, to sit at your desk or with your phone when you have uninterrupted time to address emails, log them into your calendar or schedule as action items.” Another option is to use filters that sort e-mails into folders. This is helpful because you can review folders when you have time and this info will stay out of your primary feed.

timed work playlist Turner reccommends creating an instrumental playlist for a set amount of time. Use it as a way to manage your time when working on tasks. When the set playlist is finished, so are you.

his can be a bag, box or bin that stays fixed in a designated area such as a garage shelf, extra cubby or mudroom closet. When anyone in the family realizes they have an item they don’t want, it goes in the bin. “Few people enjoy the project of sorting through a large closet or a big pile of books, but there are many times in daily life when we realize we don’t want or need a certain item anymore,” says Turner. “If there’s a place to immediately put this overflow, items will continually get cleaned out.” If a child puts something in this bin and you’re not ready to release it, remove it and stash it somewhere only you know about. This way, children continue to learn that items need to keep getting recycled out of the home on a repetitive basis.

Prep for busy mornings by setting up a staging area
T
he idea here is that each family member has one specific area to put everything they need for the next morning. “The power of designating a spot like this is that we often think of something we need for tomorrow sometime the day before, then we forget about it,” she says. For teens, the floor near their bedroom door or a mudroom cubby fits this bill. “When you go to bed at night, you’ve had all day to gather items and made your best effort to set yourself up for a stress-free morning.” This is a great tool to teach kids when they’re young and sets up strong habits as they grow. “If there’s something perishable you need to remember or you have a sports bag located elsewhere, put a note in the staging area to remind yourself to grab it,” Turner recommends.

Wrap up each day with a reset
“This is an action item that simply means walk around your house and put things back where they belong. Do not attempt to ‘clean up’ by stashing things in less visible places,” she advises. When we corral items into a bin or shove them in a closet, we just create a future untangling project that no one wants to tackle. Instead, return items to their designated storage place: keys go on a hook by the door, laundry goes upstairs in separate rooms, and phones get charged at a central charging station. “Everything should ideally have a permanent storage space, and if doesn’t it should be designated. When setting up ‘homes’ for things, don’t overcomplicate. In other words, all the LEGOs can go in one bin, they don’t need to be color-coded,” she laughs. This simple act of placing things in a fixed spot reduces clutter, enhances order, is therapeutic and evokes calm.
“STARTING THE YEAR OFF WITH A FEW NEW SYSTEMS AND A DAILY CHECKLIST SETS YOU UP FOR FEELING ORGANIZED AND IN CONTROL.” NO.

Hold a weekly family meeting
“This is a helpful habit to get into when you’re trying to coordinate a busy family’s multiple logistics,” she says, and it only needs to be 10 to 15 minutes long. “Have each member bring their calendar, look at the week ahead, and confirm who has to be where at what time— who’s driving whom, who needs the car, who has an appointment when, etc.” Turner suggests Saturdays or Sundays as a good time to do this when schedules may be less harried. “Keep it short and sweet, and avoid nagging and complex discussions,” she advises. “This little bit of planning will help avoid unexpected conflicts and keep everyone accountable.”

DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and it conducts various nominations and research campaigns across the United States on behalf of publishers. To create the "top doctors" list, DataJoe Research facilitated an online peer-voting process, also referencing government sources. DataJoe also conducted media analysis through Internet research to factor in public perception. DataJoe then tallied the votes per category for each doctor to isolate the top nominees in each category. After collecting nominations and considering additional information from the media analysis, DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had a current, active license status with the state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a doctor's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that doctor was excluded from the list. In addition, any doctor who has been disciplined, up to the timeframe of the review process for an infraction by the state regulatory board, was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.

Final Note: We recognize there are many good doctors who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding doctors in the region and the results of our research campaign. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective doctors may not appear on the list.

While access to healthcare is more challenging than ever, this membership based practice model has enabled me to be more present and available to my patients when needed. I feel gratified and privileged to be able to continue providing personalized care and guidance, no matter the circumstances. -Larry Leibowitz, MD
A PERSONALIZED APPROACH TO MEDICINE Treating the whole patient—mind, body and spirit—is at the core of Dr. Larry Leibowitz’s individualized approach to care at Matrix Personalized Medicine. Passionate about offering a truly enhanced patient experience, Dr. Leibowitz launched his membership-based primary care practice in 2017, where the most current medical advancements are blended seamlessly with a holistic approach to wellness. With the extra time and flexibility inherent in his model, Dr. Leibowitz is more able to offer the highest quality care with longer appointments and extended comprehensive wellness exams, including advanced cardiometabolic testing and lifestyle coaching. Additionally, all patients have direct access to Dr. Leibowitz when needed. Board certified in family medicine, Dr. Leibowitz has been caring for residents of Fairfield county since 1999. He has been a member of the clinical faculty of New York Medical College since 2009, where he instructs medical students in the science and art of clinical practice. COLLABORATION
C
reating a magazine is a team effort. It requires numerous people working together to get from story idea to the printed page. This month’s Eat column (page 26) was a fun example of that collaboration. Sur La Table’s corporate chef worked with the Darien location's resident chef to pick a perfect menu and teach our cooking class. Photographer Andrea Carson shot the class with NC/D art director Venera Alexandrova adding on-set styling and visual expertise, while former editor Julee Kaplan (right) and I got to have the most fun cooking delicious food together. It was one of those days that's hard to call “work,” and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to collaborate with Julee on both this story and this issue. She promises she will continue writing for NC/D in the future—and we will hold her to that... assuming she is still talking to us after she finds out we put her picture on the back page! newcanaandarienmag.com
