FRESH FACES, NEW PLACES
Idon’t know about you, but I’m pretty psyched for all the newness in Darien. Sure, it’s always been a great town but now it’s getting even better—the Corbin District is bringing in so many new places, many of which are yet to come in the next year or so. For now, we can shop at great little stores with brand new storefronts like Wee Mondine, Shoes ‘n More and Sail to Sable, and we can dine at the newest The Granola Bar location, complete with craft cocktails (yay!).
And just across town in Noroton, there’s the Darien Commons with even more great places for dining—straight from New York City into our own little village within a village. Grab a table at Seamore’s for some fresh seafood, customize your salad at Sweetgreen, taste the flavors of the Mediterranean at Naya and polish it all off with something sweet at VanLeeuwen. Soon there will be even more to come—like Molto, a long-loved neighborhood Italian spot from Fairfield. Make sure to check
out our story, “Food for Thought” (page 58) for all the flavorful new details on our new restaurants.
And, it wouldn’t be a September issue without highlighting our annual list of the top teens in our towns (page 74). Read all about our impressive young people—from the STEM whiz to the theater masters—this group of super-smarties had us floored once again.
There’s loads more in this issue, too. Get tips for college applications, fall fashion we can’t wait to wear and home inspiration from a pro. We hope you will dig in and love it.
Happy Fall!
TO NAVIGATE THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS PROCESS WITH CONFIDENCE
he time has come. You have a child who is about to apply for college. The process can be overwhelming, emotional, challenging but also rewarding. The good news is that knowledge of the everchanging admissions landscape can be a game changer. We had a recent chat with Lissa Steele, admissions advisor at One Goal Prep, a local advisement firm that works closely with students in order to help them to build a comprehensive admissions strategy.
One major change in college admissions today has a lot to do with the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent affirmative action ban, which has been widely debated for many years. Steele says the industry is in “new territory” now with this ruling which goes against the use of race in the college admission process. It will have a major effect and lead to big changes for most colleges but also challenges the programs at the most selective institutions like Harvard University, which is under fire for favoring children of alumni. That said, Steele stressed the importance of potentially taking a stand on the issue within a college essay.
Steele said that she often begins working with students on their college admissions process as early as 9th grade. She says this helps her to be able to get to know the student right away which is beneficial in helping to guide them towards the right balance of classes and extra curriculars.
It’s important to keep in mind that colleges look for kids who have a strong narrative inside and outside of the classroom.
While some schools continue with their “testing optional” mandate which began during the pandemic, Steele says she believes in the importance of taking the SAT or ACT, no matter what.
Steele said it’s important for students to have depth in their activities during the high school years. Colleges look for students with dedication and consistency in order to have an advantage in the admissions process. Steele says it’s not about doing all the things, but rather choosing one or two passions and diversifying how you carry out those passions. Maybe you start a club at school or partner with a charitable organization, she suggested.
Steele says that when you’re choosing class schedules in high school, it’s important that they are a well thought out combination.

Don’t put away those flip-flops just yet! Enjoy a warm weather escape to THE WHITE BARN INN —Maine’s answer to laid-back luxury
Maine is always a good idea. But Maine in the warmer months, with its beaches, boating and buttered rolls stuffed with fresh lobster, is the quintessential New England escape. Vacationland beckons with many worthwhile stops along its rocky coastline—from Biddeford to Bar Harbor—but Kennebunk makes for an easy trip from Connecticut, especially when you’re settling in at The White Barn Inn.
Tucked away from the town’s busy center—which becomes heavy with foot traffic during peak months as visitors shop, line up for seafood and seek out ice cream— the Inn offers a quiet refuge to unwind and indulge. The historic site, originally constructed in the 1860s, includes twenty-seven rooms spread among the buildings that surround the namesake barn. For extra privacy, book one of four waterfront cottages on the
White Barn Marina, and wake up to unobstructed water views. Each of the hotel’s spaces embraces its farmhouse history but features contemporary finishes and a modern designer’s touch, courtesy of Jenny Wolf Interiors (her Pound Ridge store, The Huntress, should also be on your must-visit list), who completed a redesign in the summer of 2020. The result is at once elegant, inviting and cozy. Because the Inn is an Auberge

Calm Down
Relax and reset with MINDFUL BODYWORK
Sometimes, things not going according to plan, is all a part of the bigger plan.
When Maria Allen was forced to bring her marathon running to an abrupt halt due to an injury, she knew that it was officially time to slow down. She began practicing yoga and massage therapy to aid in her healing and started to feel the ways in which releasing physical tension can help the body to let go of emotional tension.
A former actress, Allen’s newfound understanding of the importance of the mind-body connection inspired her to change course, secure her title as a licensed massage therapist and open REAL and Powerful, a practice dedicated to healing and well-being. The acronym REAL stands for: Relax, Embody, Allow and Let Go. Allen’s mission is to provide clients with hands-on bodywork and to actively guide them towards more comfortable and joyful ways of living. Allen encourages her clients “to see their imbalances as information, a guide map for what's needed to get back into their strength and vitality. When the body and mind are ‘heard’ and treated with patience and acceptance, space can be made for natural healing to occur,” she says.
Allen offers services ranging from traditional deep and light full body massages to craniosacral treatments, assisted stretching,

guided meditation/mindfulness sessions and slow inspired movement instruction.
“It’s quite spiritual for me to hold space for people and my intention is to be a conduit and to be able to listen. Not just what they say, but to listen to their body with my hands and to follow what the body is saying,” she explains. “The body has the power to heal itself, but sometimes it gets stuck. Deeply listening to the body is something that I learned from acting. If you don’t listen to your scene partner, you won’t know what’s next.”
Massages are individualized to treat chronic or acute pain, tightness and enhance range of motion. Craniosacral therapy, she says, is a gentle hands-on approach used to identify strain patterns and imbalances in the body and helps to alleviate physical, mental and emotional tension and pain. Treatments can enhance the function of the central nervous system and allow the body to recalibrate. Craniosacral treatments can be helpful for anything from sore knees and hips, to gut issues, to PTSD and anything else that stems from a systemic imbalance. Assisted stretching includes both static and dynamic stretching along with resistance work. Meditation/mindfulness sessions can be done while sitting, lying down or even walking for those that prefer to be moving. Slow inspired movement sessions are performed on a mat and similarly to a yoga session, help clients use a combination of movements and their breath to release both physical and mental tension.
“Sometimes a client will get up and say something like, ‘I had no idea that this part of my calf was tight until you started massaging it’,” says Allen. “When people take the time for restorative work, they realize how much they need it and it’s often not even the reason they came in.”
Refresher home
A DARIEN DESIGNER WORKS HER MAGIC TO REVIVE A TRADITIONAL STATELY HOME
by malia mckinnon frameopposite page: Bold laquored walls elevate the cozy den. left: The open kitchen flows seamlessly into a dining area and family room. below: Leonard and the homeowner went with performance fabrics in the family room in shades of blue and white.
Home projects are always more fun to do with a friend, especially one with good design sense,” laughs Fiona Leonard of Fiona Leonard Interiors, referring to a recent renovation she wrapped up in Darien.
Leonard’s client moved into her 1950s colonial eight years ago, and after several years of raising little kids she was ready to revitalize and rejuvenate it a bit. Leonard knew immediately that the kitchen and bathrooms needed to be redone, so she called on builder Lou Gianatassio to oversee this substantial renovation.
“The goal was to freshen things up overall, using clean whites for the trim and kitchen in place of the previous ivory tones. We also wanted to take my client’s traditional aesthetic and marry it with some fun, iconic wallpapers and modern fabrics,” she says.
The former kitchen had a peninsula that took up too much space and sucked all the oxygen out of the room, remembers Leonard. With a need for better flow, she designed the new kitchen with a central island and built a wall of pantry cabinets and a floorto-ceiling cabinet to conceal bulky appliances. A custom wooden hood was installed and a simple white silestone with pale gray veining was used for both the countertop and backsplash, making this space fresh and vibrant.
“We chose lucite and brass barstools from CB2, which are easy to clean and help make a slightly narrow area feel larger because they don’t take up visual space,” she says. Leonard employed mostly brass hardware in the kitchen, but included a dramatic faucet in
polished nickel because her client loves the look of mixed metals.
The family room, with its airy cathedral ceiling, is connected to the kitchen and thanks to Leonard’s help, now feels like one cohesive space. Crisp, clean white sofas dominate this area and family-friendly performance fabrics keep them durable for a young family.
“My client loves blue and it’s such a classic color so it became a common thread throughout the home in various hues,” she adds. A pair of fun blue leopard print swivel chairs hold court in this room along with an oversized custom navy blue leather ottoman with nailheads, perfect for coffee table books or propping up feet at the end of the day. The leopard theme continues in the breakfast room cane chair cushions, covered in Kravet fabric. Brown hues in this pattern as well as the gold in a nearby scalloped side table help blend some warmer tones in with the predictable blues and whites in the room. Leonard planted some greenery in a few blue accessories and
added pops of green in a floral print on the sofa throw pillows. “I always use some kind of plants indoors to balance the landscape outside, and it’s also a great way to bring color into a room, especially for those who are color averse,” she says.
Make your way down the hallway and you’ll see a pretty, feminine powder room, the perfect place to use an iconic wallpaper by Brunschwig & Fils aptly named Bird and Thistle.
“This historic paper has been around but still packs a punch with its fun aqua color and bursts of pale pinks and greens,” she explains. A custom taupe colored vanity ties in to a faux calacata marble floor, and the faucet, cabinet hardware and a lucite and brass mirror display the mixed metal theme again. A rattan roman shade adds texture and visual interest to this gem box of a room.
The homeowner loves to entertain so when it came to the dining room design, more was more. “My friend hails from Virginia so she has a bit of a formal southern sensibility for décor,” notes Leonard. The client also inherited many of her grandmother’s special
tableware and place settings, so a pale bluish gray wallpaper featuring a leafy canopy reminiscent of French tapestry seemed a fitting beautiful backdrop for this room. Often used for entertaining, the dining room is the ideal spot to display Grandma’s beautiful fine china, brass candlesticks, silver salt cellars and sterling silver flatware on any occasion. “We wanted this room to feel special, like there’s a sense of grandeur and occasion here no matter the event,” notes Leonard. This client also loved being involved in sourcing items for her home and fell in love with a distressed vintage gilt mirror that now hangs over the fireplace. A set of existing dark wood Chippendale chairs surround a dark mahogany table and add to the regal mood of this space. Leonard and her client also repurposed a pair of skirted upholstered club chairs from another room. “It’s unexpected to see chairs in a dining room, but these worked perfectly flanking the fireplace.” Throw pillows in a Clarence House Chinese dragon fabric add a playful touch, and sheer drapery panels let in abundant light.
A charming butler’s pantry lies

adjacent to the kitchen and is fully equipped with a sink, ice maker, wine storage and dishwasher, providing an ideal prep area and mini bar for the couples’ frequent dinner parties. Custom cabinetry is painted a neutral taupe and adorned with brass hardware, while the dramatic smoky blue gray backsplash is the star of this small space. Made of shiny undulating ceramic tiles, it reflects light and radiates different tones of blue within the room. Additionally, the window above the sink opens out onto
the family’s deck so drinks can flow back and forth for easy indoor-outdoor entertaining.
The adjacent den and living room are two separate spaces, but Leonard unified them by using a plush, textural zebra patterned carpet and painting them the same color. “These rooms had dark wood paneling that the husband didn’t want to paint, but we finally convinced him it would look great in a high gloss green, which reads teal,” says Leonard. This greenish color
was a departure for the client who’s obsessed with blue and white, and this deep rich jewel tone helps emit a loungy feel in both spaces. “The husband can still watch his sports and relax in this room that retains an old-world feel with its leather chairs and burl wood coffee table, but it’s an updated look his wife can live with,” says Leonard.
Another thing on the homeowner’s list was a proper mudroom. “The mudroom and laundry were one room

before the renovation, so we relocated the laundry upstairs and outfitted a mudroom downstairs for her active kids, using a watercolor patterned tile on floor and vertical shiplap for a casual feel,” notes the designer. The finished space has a bench and some fun, painted hooks for the kids to hang up their backpacks as well as whimsical elephant pillows and a piece of bright geometric artwork by artist Wendy Concannon.
Upstairs, the primary bedroom decor was inspired by a checkerboard black and white diagonal tile that the client wanted for the bathroom. “The tile was a catalyst for how to style the bedroom, but we needed to soften the black and white so it didn’t feel too intense,” Leonard remembers. She achieved this by pairing muted taupe cabinetry with a roman shade in Schumacher’s “Pyne Hollyhock,” a well-known floral chintz influenced by English block cotton prints and used by the famous designer Albert Hadley for his client Nancy Pyne in the early 60s. The fabric has a hint of gray and black which blends with the neutral Edgecomb Gray color of the walls. As in the other bathrooms, Leonard notes that the mix of polished nickel and brass adds a rich old/new feel, almost like a hotel vibe.
To echo this classic feeling in the bedroom, a Schumacher wallpaper in Chinois Palais was applied to the accent wall behind the bed. The wallpaper is inspired by antique Chinese silk panels and features exotic birds and cherry blossoms. The rest of the room is painted light gray, and the designer added some soft furnishings and textures including a channelstitched bench and a pair of dark gray leather chairs with nailheads. The
drapery panels have a metallic thread running throughout which adds a little glamour, and a graduated dresser was placed under an eave—clever use of an awkward space. “Two things I loved about this room was that we used an unexpected spot for storage, and we made the room feel more spacious simply by editing out some of the furniture—a trick I often use to make an old space feel new,” she says. Leonard reminisces that she and her client became friends when both of their kids started preschool. “I’ve been to her home several times over the years, and I know how she lives and how much she loves hosting. After our project, she had our preschool moms’ group over for lunch and everyone saw the house transformed. She is truly someone who makes people feel special and taken care of, and now she has a home that is beautiful, functional and supports this gift she gives to others.”

Meet Your Eventeur!
by samantha yanks // photography by natasha miller and contributedFrom popping into community-centric Four Forks for a salad to booking them for your dinner parties or larger bespoke events, Founder Megan Ruppenstein’s growth across Fairfield County and into NYC clearly makes her one-to-watch (and book for your events)!
What inspired Four Forks?
Four Forks, named after the forks that faithfully feed my four boys, started from a love of cooking and a desire to share that love.
After encouragement from friends who had said “make us what you are preparing for your family,” Four Forks has grown into a full-service catering and event company. We specialize in dinner parties and events both large and small.
At our Darien shop, we are also true to our roots and continue to focus on providing wholesome, healthy “home-cooked” meals to busy families who find themselves eating take out or scrambling to prepare dinner too often than they would like.
What type of cuisine are you most passionate about?
Salads are the most popular item, and we change them based on the season. We love creating new vinaigrettes that pair with all kinds of fresh, seasonal vegetables, grains and proteins.
When it comes to events, dinner parties are the most fun to create. We start with the hosts’ favorite food and then bring the menu together around it! Pairing fun cocktails and wines then creating a tablescape is our favorite part of the job!
Where do you source from?
We love to find foods from local purveyors. One of our passions is micro-greens and we love a local provider who grows beautiful and unique greens. We sourc locally for tablescapes and boards depending on the season and use a local flower company with the freshest and unique finds!
MEGAN RUPPENSTEIN has rapidly expanded her community-centric Four Forks café into an event and catering empire.
You recently catered an event for Magrino PR and walked the legendary Martha Stewart through your menu. How was that experience?
From my very early days I would ask myself How would Martha do it? I have most of her books, and they are truly my favorite for inspiration and creative cooking. The opportunity to walk Martha through our menu was a culmination of that often-asked question. Martha is an icon because of the time she put in to perfect her menus, which contributed to her ability to then go on and build a global brand. I have always been inspired by her focus and it motivates me to put my best presentation forward and to keep learning and growing. Her interest in each dish demonstrated how preparation and presentation are still core to her vision. I am so grateful to Magrino PR for the opportunity to cook for Martha and so many of their talented clients.
As your business has grown you really have become a full-scale event company. Do you prefer to work with clients on the entirety of an event from the menu to florals?
When I first started, I didn't see catering as a reality because working every weekend with four young boys sounded a bit daunting. As time went on the boys got big and we grew, the catering became my passion in creating events from beginning to end and making each one special to the client. The florals were an organic piece of the evolution as I wanted them to be a certain way and I just had the desire to procure and design myself. East Coast Wholesale Flowers have an eclectic selection that is so fresh. In a pinch, I also love Compo Farms, a few doors down from Four Forks. Anna is amazing at what she does there.
One of the parts of my business I love the most is getting to know people. In meeting with clients, there are many times my staff will have to signal me to get back to the kitchen as I have been chatting just a bit too long. Connecting with people is a part of my DNA.
When it comes to working with clients, to plan their event, it is natural for me to want to understand my client's goals and pull it all together for them. The preparation and presentation of a client's catering selections are still the core of what we do, but personalizing tablescapes and the setting of the event as to location, tents, rentals and flowers can pull the occasion together in a way that allows our clients, as the hosts, to shine. That is my goal from the planning stages to execution — create a bespoke event that will make our clients excited and proud as it truly reflects them and their flair.
money matters

index has soared, from 144.3 at the beginning of 1983 to 3960.66 on the first of this year. Even home prices have risen 500-fold. But as family assets have increased, so too have the ages of progenitors. Cerulli estimates that $84 trillion will be passed along to the next generation of Americans by 2045, $16 trillion in the next ten years alone.
Preparing the next generation for all this wealth is a tall task. Is your family ready?
becoming conscientious stewards of wealth—in the family business and in life. This can prove challenging, as younger generations in wealthy families often exist and socialize in a bubble, the survey noted. They may lack experience with leadership, economics, entrepreneurship, family governance, global investments or even simple budgeting or buying a home.
net-worth clients tackled things like fostering entrepreneurial aspirations, networking and mentoring in addition to markets and economics.
“It’s so much more than market knowledge. It’s a very personal experience,” Wills says. “It’s not just money but family dynamics.”
Citi Private Bank recently surveyed 200 affluent families around the world. What each of them had: a net worth in excess of $25 million. What 62 percent of them didn’t have: a plan for guiding the next generation to be a responsible stakeholder in that wealth.
Family wealth in the United States totaled $140 trillion last year, according to a report by Cerulli Associates. And no wonder. Over the past 40 years, the S&P 500
Cayman Wills, managing director with Citi Private Bank in Greenwich, believes that the key to preparing family members to inherit and manage multigenerational wealth is to “begin at the end. Twenty-five years down the line, what does the successful family look like? Start at that goal and work backward.”
Wills isn’t referring exclusively to preserving or growing those millions. Instead, “success” can mean preparing Muffy and Junior for taking on leadership roles, maintaining family values,
SHARING THE WEALTH
Just as accumulating wealth came from planning, so too should transfering that wealth, Wills says. “How is that decision-making achieved? Many of our clients have an annual family meeting where you can review a lot of these topics. It starts with: what are our longterm goals, and what do we want to instill in our next generation?”
Such conversations can turn prickly. Enlisting help from a financial advisor with expertise in wealth transfer can help. A recent event hosted by the MIT/Sloan School of Management for children of Citi Private Bank’s ultra-high-
With or without help from an advisor, annual family learning programs and visioning sessions not only help prepare future generations to lead the family enterprise, they can also make the family a more cohesive unit. Older family members who may have devoted most of their working life to creating and building wealth may discover that what their children and grandchildren hold dear isn’t the same as what motivated previous generations. Younger generations might not even know the sacrifices and strategies of their forebears. Building multigenerational bonds not only helps preserve wealth, Wills says, it strengthens families. ND
Increasingly, affluent Americans are choosing to distribute their wealth while they’re still alive. “Giving with a warm hand,” as it were, says Wills. The U.S. tax code currently allows individuals to gift up to $12.9 million to heirs over a lifetime without a federal tax consequence (though that is set to revert to $5 million in 2026). Rather than handing over blocks of cash, ask your financial advisor to model various scenarios and asset allocations that ensure you will have what you need, while sending the rest to trusts set up for your loved ones and your charitable intentions. That’s a true gift: to be able to see your hard work benefiting the people and the causes dear to you.

After an unforgettable blind date at The Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan, Brittany (“Britt”) and Andrew were inseparable. Their date, which took place in early 2020, was so successful that Andrew asked Britt on a second date before the first one had even finished. Andrew’s cousin, Curry, who had been friends with Britt for more than a decade, introduced the couple. Although grateful for the set-up, the couple still likes to tease him for not doing it sooner.
Britt and Andrew’s relationship progressed during the pandemic, with them quarantining together on ski trips, in Groton Long Point, CT, and “at various points up and down the East Coast (thank you to our parents).” It didn’t take long for Andrew to know that “Britt was the one,” and he proposed November 6, 2021, in a scenic spot by the Central Park Reservoir.
The couple exchanged vows at St. John’s Church in Darien, and the fall 2022 ceremony was officiated by Deacon William Santulli. Afterward, the celebration continued at Woodway Beach Club in Stamford. Christy Coco, Britt’s sister and Maid of Honor, performed a surprise song, bringing down the house with her rendition of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” by ABBA. According to the couple, “The entire evening was magical.

s more people move from New York City and into Darien, the restaurants they know and love are following suit. From fabulous seafood to quick and healthy salads, there are more dining choices than ever in town—with even more places to open in the months to come. We couldn't wait to try the lastest. Here's what we found.
The Ganola Bar's NY Happy Meal - Martini of your choice + friesFresh sustainable seafood spot SEAMORE ,S opens in The Darien Commons
by elizabeth keyserWhen Seamore’s landed at Darien Commons in Noroton, it seemed like the whole town came out to see what this sustainable seafood mini-chain is all about. From the moment it opened in June, Seamore’s (which at press time has seven locations in New York City, and Arlington, VA) was slammed by a wave of local families and groups of friends. On a recent Wednesday, the accommodating staff seated them as fast as they could, while suggesting we (walk-ins) grab a small round high top in the crowded bar area, and start by ordering cocktails (passion fruit margarita) and mocktail (fresco apricot cucumber honey) and appetizers. Good idea.
Crispy Rice is the signature appetizer. A more indulgent version of sushi on a bed of fried sushi rice laid over triangles of nori, it comes three to an order. Ginger salmon crispy rice makes an arresting visual, topped with black sesame seeds and micro cilantro. A starter of fried squid was served in a parchment-lined deep-fry basket full of rings and tentacles covered in a light, crisp, shattery coating.
Seamore’s concept is grounded in the understanding that worldwide over-fishing as decimated many wild fish populations. So they source carefully—everything is approved by the Monterrey Bay Seafood Watch. Most is caught off U.S. Coasts, in a way that minimizes by-catch and destruction of the eco-system.
A floor-to-ceiling black-board style art work titled The Daily Landing evokes both a fish store and a school chalk board with simple, evocative drawings of fish and fun facts about them.
The New England clam chowder, topped with crumbled bacon, mini croutons and chives, was
traditionally rich and contemporarily smoky. Seamore’s Salad was a big crunchy affair of romaine, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, a touch of mint, and toasted peanuts. It can be topped with Norwegian salmon, blackened shrimp, Montauk scallops, or the Daily Catch. (And yes, chicken is an option.)
The Daily Catch is the most interesting way to explore the heart of Seamore’s menu, which is called The Reel Deel (grilled fish with two options for sides). It’s an opportunity to learn about fish other than those familiar and often over-fished species like blue fin tuna and Atlantic cod. The website expands on that in an entertaining way, while giving location, habitat, identifiers, and most important for diners— flavor and texture.
Black bass filet was seared golden, the sweet flesh laid over Option two: a bed of butternut-rosemary spaetzle, the traditional south German noodle given a healthier make-over with squash, and creamed spinach pureed to silkiness. Perched in the bowl was a smaller bowl filled with my choice of sauce, lemongrass aji. Amid the European, Asian and South American ingredients and flavors, the simply grilled fish was the star of the plate. And I learned something new: Black bass can change sex in certain environments, according to seamores.com.
Smoked salmon benedict - poached eggs, hollandaise, english muffin, served with brunch salad or hashbrownCRISPY RICE IS THE SIGNATURE APPETIZER
A MORE INDULGENT VERSION OF SUSHI ON A BED OF FRIED SUSHI RICE LAID OVER TRIANGLES OF NORI.
From the Daily Catch, my dining companion chose Golden Tilefish, not because it is known as “the clown of the sea,” but because of its mild, delicate buttery flesh. She ordered it with Option one: cauliflower mash, seared green beans and pickled eggplant. She chose the chimichurri sauce, an Argentinean-inspired, vinegary dressing with oregano.
Fish and chips was spot-on, packets of golden browned batter covered steaming white fish. Atlantic pollack, a firm, but sweet and delicate fleshed fish, replaces cod here, and it’s served with malt vinegar and tartar sauce. The fries were thin and crunchy. There’s much more to explore—lobster roll, fish tacos, Korean chicken BBQ tacos, steak frites, smash burger and chicken Milanese.
For dessert, the signature churro ice cream sandwich is a shareable plate of a big scoop of caramel chocolate chunk ice cream between two cinnamon-crunchy deep-fried churros, resting on a thick swath of caramel sauce.
The few bumps in the evening (lukewarm soup, cold fries) were easily fixed, and easy to understand given the restaurant had just opened.
Be warned that high ceilings, open layout, and lots of voices, makes for a noisy place. Even as the room emptied out, we continued to lean in to hear each other.
“Busy night,” we said to our server. “Oh, this isn’t busy,” she replied. Seamore’s has caught the crowd.

f health is happiness, as Van Leeuwen Ice Cream says, their new shop in Darien Commons is a source of bliss. The brand that began as a yellow ice cream truck in 2008 on the streets of Manhattan, and expanded to shops in NYC’s coolest neighborhoods, is known for both traditional rich, French ice cream and vegan frozen desserts, all featuring well-sourced, real ingredients---from a base of milk, cream and egg yolks, or alternative vegan milks, to artisan ingredients like Sicilian pistachios, Big Face Coffee, organic Earl Grey tea. Van Leeuwen is a local artisan food success story, produced in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and distributed to supermarkets across the country and shops in seven states.
LIFE
Pete Van LeeuwenTASTING IS ENCOURAGED, & NECESSARY, GIVEN ALL THE CHOICES.
The Darien Commons shop offers scoops in cups or waffle cones, with or without toppings, and pre-packed pints to take home (bring a thermos bag cooler.) Tasting is encouraged, and necessary, given all the choices, and the friendly staff offer them on small metal spoons, rather than plastic. (Yay!) The menu notes any possible allergens.
From our sampling, we’d hearty recommend peanut butter brownie honeycomb, Sicilian pistachio, chocolate fudge brownie, and affogato. Selection of toppings range from traditional hot fudge and rainbow sprinkles to salted caramel sauce and praline pretzels, and real and vegan whipped cream.
Vegan ice creams are made from oat or cashew milk, and the flavor selection is just as decadent tasting as in the (yolk-rich) French ice cream, including a version of the peanut butter brownie honeycomb. Other popular vegan favorites include mint chip, strawberry shortcake, and cookies and cream caramel swirl.
Van Leeuwen’s staff will mix, whip and assemble floats, Sundaes, milkshakes, and ice cream sandwiches. Mini trends can start quickly. We watched a customer order whipped cream on top of her scoop. Seeing that fluffy light topping, a group of ladies standing behind her all ordered whipped cream on top of their scoops too. There’s limited seating inside, but more in an outdoor patio shared by incoming Gregory’s coffee shop.
One other thing, the name marionberry ice cream might cause a quizzical look from those who remember a certain corrupt DC Mayor from the 1980s. But the mayor and the berry have nothing to do with one another. Marionberry is a type of juicy black berry that Van Leeuven’s Marionberry cheesecake ice cream has made more popular.
CARROLLON THE GO
New healthy options for those needing a quick bite
Naya
This Middle Eastern addition to the fast-casual, buildyour-own-bowl trend, offers choices of fresh greens and vegetables, meat and vegetarian proteins, starches, sauces, and pickles. NAYA has lots of vegan and gluten free options. You can load up on a falafel bowl, choosing romaine, rice-and- vermicelli, hummus, cucumbers and yogurt, cabbage salad, onions-parsley-sumac salad, fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, kalamata olives, pickled turnips, and spicy green sauce. Or go a more sedate and salt-conscious route with a bowl grilled marinated chicken breast over brown rice, mixed seasonal greens, babaganoush, and lemon tahini. The individually plastic packaged “pita” is spongy, tasteless, and not the next best thing to pocket bread. With indoor and outdoor seating, NAYA can provide a quick, satisfying meal for hungry people looking for lots of color and variety in a bowl.
Sweetgreen
Bareburger
This fast-casual salad chain, became known as much for its ordering app as it is for its sustainably-sourced organic salad bowls. Those glued to their phones can order customer favorites kale Caesar (kale and romaine, chicken, parmesan crisps and Caesar dressing,) or Guacamole Greens (chicken, avocado, tomatoe, red onion, shredded cabbage, tortilla chips and lime-cilantro-jalepeño dressing), and also view calorie, carb, protein and fat contents. More detailed nutritional information for each component, which includes sodium contents, is on the website. The Darien Commons location is its second in Connecticut (the other is in Greenwich), East Coast from Massachusetts to Florida, the Mid-West, California and Texas. The ingredient-driven focus is clear from the see-through windows to the walk-in refrigerator, where clear containers of vegetables—sweet potatoes, cucumbers and kale are marked with use-by dates. A list of purveyors from across the country is written chalk-board style on a wall.
RAISING
The
everything from giftable granola to a full day-to-night restaurant concept
by georgette yacoubGood food is all about skillful preparation, high quality ingredients, and top-notch preparation by trained chefs who work elusively in the background. But great eating—the kind that becomes an entire experience—can only happen when a restaurant masters its ability to be a reflection of the customer, not the chef. The founders and co-CEOs of the Granola Bar, Julie Mountain and Dana Noorily, figured that out quickly. The entire staff—from hosts to chefs—sit at the same table pitching ideas for new dishes and craft cocktails until they come up with offerings that they feel their friends and family would want to eat.
BAR
Marinated olives, pull-apart sliders, Gochujang shrimp tacos, seared sesame crusted tuna, baby kale, avocado, watermelon radish and miso ginger dressing“WHEN WE GO OUT WE WANT TO SHARE 18
DIFFERENT THINGS.”
“We feel like sometimes restaurants are too severe,” says Mountain. “When we go out, we want to share 18 different things. We don’t want FOBO or fear of better options. So don’t call ourselves tapas, but we’re shareable.”
And while sharing is the idea, sometimes it’s not so easy. The cinnamon roll pancakes were hard to share. They had a touch of crispiness around the edges and were plated with the same care as a dinner plate at an upscale New York City restaurant—on a matte black textured plate with sliced strawberries artfully arranged around a dollop of whipped cream.
Speaking of New York City dining—this new Granola Bar in Darien manages to transform from a bright, daytime cafe to a chic NYC-feeling dinner concept with just a change in music and lighting.
The transformation is subtle but effective enough to feel like you’re in a whole new restaurant once the sun sets— testament to Mountain and Noorily’s ability to design a white space that can live a double life.
It’s not customary, but it is encouraged, to start with the New York City Happy Meal, a martini of your choice served alongside garlic parmesan fries and an herb aioli.
Other fan favorites are the seared sesame crusted tuna, tuna tartar mini tacos, and the crispy brussels, which is Noorily’s “hands down” favorite dish.
The idea for the Granola Bar started just over a decade ago, when Mountain and Noorily were at a kid’s birthday party in Westport and Mountain noticed that her daughter wasn’t eating her pizza. She approached Noorily and said, “What am I missing?”
That led to a conversation about food that led to a lunch date to talk about a business idea.
Mountain was in music and Noorily was in finance before leaving New York City and making the move to Westport to raise their families. “We had a mutual feeling about losing our identity and our connection with adults,” says Noorily, remembering the lunch that started it all.
That is when the idea for a chef-driven, giftable granola business was born. After seeing big success, the two decided to expand their model. The Granola Bar flagship opened its doors in December 2013. Since then, the concept has evolved, from a daytime cafe to a day-to-night-concept offering dinner and cocktails, catering business and even a food truck. In all, there are six restaurants in Westport, Fairfield, Greenwich, Stamford, Rye and now Darien. There’s also Old Mill Grocery & Deli, which just opened last year.
“A corporate mandate for us is to treat people with kindness and respect,” says Mountain. “That trickles into the customer experience. When our staff is happy, our customers are happy.”
Noorily adds, “We want people to walk into our space to feel they are cared for and feel joy. It’s designed to be one of the simplest, joyful parts of your day.”

MITCH MCCORMACK
DARIEN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2025
WHY MITCH IS A TEEN TO WATCH:
• Started a prominent Instagram account (with over 1K followers)
• Team photographer for Darien High School Junior Varsity Hockey and Varsity Lacrosse
• Played on Freshman and JV Soccer team at Darien High School
• Participated in productions for DAF Media
• Member of church youth group
• Photographs for multiple youth sports
I would like to pursue a career in… Sports production. I’ve realized that there are so many career paths within the industry, and many of them excite me.
In the fall I will be... on the field. I hope to play soccer for Darien High School, while continuing to capture photos and videos of DHS teams for DAF and on my own.
My interest in photography began… just out of curiosity. My Mom asked me to take pictures at my brother's basketball game with her old Nikon camera. I then decided to tinker with it in the spring of 2022. I started taking pictures, mostly on athletic fields, and sharing them with friends. Once I saw their exciting reactions to my work, I really understood that my work mattered. That’s where this all began. My role models include… my parents. They’ve taught me about hard work, kindness, and staying positive, even in times of challenge.
I like to decompress by… playing golf with friends and family. Being outside, chasing that little white ball (usually in the woods), is my happy place.
The best part of photography is… the connection. I really enjoy staying connected to the athletes, teams, parents, coaches and community
through my work. It makes me feel part of the overall program, and makes me work harder to be better for everyone involved.
My dream job would be… a team photographer for a professional sports team. Being able to go to the stadium everyday to capture moments from the best athletes in the world would be a dream.
In 10 years I’ll be… hopefully making a positive difference somewhere. It’s hard to know exactly what the future will bring, but I want to make a positive contribution to a company and community in whatever it is I do.
A hard lesson I’ve learned was… that nothing is just handed to you. You have to be willing to put yourself out there, even if it takes you out of your comfort zone.
My best study tip is... hard work is up to you. The only person to stop you from working harder is you.
LIFE
Strengthened.
Strength of mind, body, and spirit are the cornerstones of a life well lived. As we prepare our boys for life in a fast-changing world, we’re especially dedicated to cultivating the whole boy, to building in every student the habits-of-mind that will nourish and fortify him for the rest of his life.
ANNABELLE MURPHY
NEW CANAAN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2024
WHY ANABELLE IS A TEEN TO WATCH:
• Took 11 higher level courses which included five AP courses
• Ran cross country foar all three years at the high school
• Elected president of the choir for the 2023-2024 school year
• Played Marian Paroo in the New Canaan High School theatre department’s production of the Music Man
• Elected VP of the theatre club for the 2023-2024 school year
I spent my summer… at a musical theater intensive at Penn State University. This intensive provided me with an inside look as to what a day in the life might look like for a student intending to major in musical theatre. I was immersed in all styles of dance, vocal technique classes, and acting technique classes; I just loved it!
Acting has given me… an outlet to express myself in forms that are unattainable otherwise. I feel so privileged to be able to live in fantasy worlds and tell the stories of those who came before me, breathing theatre to life is truly magical and gives me so much joy.
In 10 years I will be… hopefully living in New York City and auditioning/working as an actress.
Before a performance you can find me… socializing with my peers. Although it is most definitely necessary to get a full and thorough warm up in, I find it important to connect with my cast mates to continue building bonds and trust. Without the connection off of the stage there would be no glue to hold us together on stage.
The best part about my school is… the theater department. This answer may seem obvious coming from me, however, in a town like New Canaan which can be centered around our incredible sports program, it has been so important for me that I have found this theater enclave, so to speak. In our little corner of the school I have made some of my best friends and discovered what I want to do for the rest of my life. I like to decompress by… vegging. Vegging is my way of saying I like to crawl into bed, put on a good show, and have some uninterrupted time for at least two hours.
In college I hope to… learn more about myself as a person so I can become a better artist.
The hardest lesson I have learned was… that I can’t control everything. In the winter, the week before our main stage production of the Music Man, I got laryngitis. Being a performer, my voice and my body are my instrument so the fact that it had let me down was so frustrating. Ultimately I had to learn that it was out of my control and it all happened for the right reason.
A big part of being on stage is… energy. That sounds like a given, however, what some shows lack is the sheer excitement that starts with the cast. If the cast doesn’t look like they’re enjoying themselves then its over for the audience.
In the fall I will be… going into my senior year and prepping for the upcoming college audition season.

DEAN AMBROSE
ST. LUKES SCHOOL CLASS OF 2023
WHY DEAN IS A TEEN TO WATCH:
• Passionate and committed to service work and founder and president of the SLS Building for Nonprofits Club.
• JV boys soccer team (co-captain as a junior)
• Kicker for the Varsity football team
• Varsity boys tennis team
• Certified scuba diver
• Elected as a Junior Class Representative
• An active part of the Math Team and has elected as co-captain multiple years in a row
• Vice president of the SLS Investment Club
• During the pandemic he completed his Eagle Scout project (for the Darien-based Troop 53) which was building 12 convertible benches for the nonprofit Grassroots Tennis and Education.
• St. Luke’s requires 20 hours of service per high school year. To date, Dean has completed more than 253 service hours.
•Inducted into the SLS Cum Laude Society.
The best part about being a three sport athlete is… staying active and competitive all year round with different groups of people outside of academics.
My passion for community service and giving back began…when I was a Scout, and now Eagle Scout, I participated in several community service projects and later organized and led my own. My Eagle Project consisted of constructing 12 benches that convert into picnic tables for Norwalk Grassroots Tennis & Education while having to adjust for social distancing for my volunteers during the pandemic. This project encouraged the tennis players’ parents to support their children and attend their matches. I did not want to finish my service with this project, so I founded Building for Nonprofits (BFN) at my school. As the only club through which students can participate in community efforts during the school day, BFN teaches students the skills of collaboration and building while benefiting the organizations who work to improve our local community. From the St. Luke’s designLab, we build for these nonprofits, free of charge.
In the fall I will be… attending Dartmouth College where I plan on double majoring in Economics and Mathematical Data Science.
One day I’d love to… learn how to do a standing backflip, SCUBA dive the Great Barrier Reef, and explore the Son Doong cave in Vietnam - the world’s largest cave with its own weather system. My career goals include… utilizing AI to create an automated business model, such as a drop shipping business, instagram theme pages, or to analyze data to provide valuable insights for customers so that I can pursue a career
in commercial real estate or finance and remotely maintain these additional sources of income.
Scuba diving provides me… an opportunity to see wildlife that is very removed from human contact, and therefore often less afraid of my presence. The animals I see 60-80 feet underwater are sometimes equally as interested in you as you are in them.
Having dove with manta rays at night, pet a wild shark, and been inked on by a few squid really makes me appreciate their world and how important it is to keep the ocean clean and healthy.
My personal mantra is… “If you’re going to do something, do it right or don’t do it at all”
Before a big game you can find me… attempting a trick shot over and over again.
The best part about my school was… my Multivariable Calculus teacher, Mr. Kohl, because he went out of his way to demonstrate how the lessons we learned applied to the real world. We even went to a stream on campus to watch the curl and divergence of the water as it hit various rocks.
When I have downtime you can find me… building an altered version of something I saw online like a floating chair or table, long-boarding around town, going outside with friends, or relaxing and watching YouTube.
ANDREW DOOLEY
My passion for acting began… in fifth grade when I performed in my first musical. However, as I got older I grew to enjoy acting more than the musical aspects of theatre.
I spent my summer… working, spending time with friends and acting in a short film, which was my first time acting for screen.
My role models include… my brothers, my parents, Hugh Jackman and Jacob Keith-Watson, who was my acting teacher during my freshman and sophomore year of high school.
In the fall I will… be attending Tisch at NYU and pursuing a BFA in Acting.
One day I’d love to… act in films and television, but that’s not to say I want to leave musical theater behind completely. I’d love to do it on the side in addition to screen acting.
My career goals include… becoming a working actor and playing a leading role in a film.
My personal mantra is… the best way to get things done is through action. For me, the best part about acting is… getting to play a character that is completely different from yourself. Something that would surprise people about me is… I really enjoy playing basketball. About two months before “The Music Man” I broke my ankle while playing with my friends. I have had lots of great acting coaches and teachers that taught me a lot. However, if I had to choose one, it would be Melody Erricson. She has been heavily involved in my life since second grade and I’m extremely grateful for everything she has done for me.
Think big
A single thought begins a journey of exploration and can be the source for igniting passions, inspiring others, or making an impact.
It’s how we think.
JULIAN LAGATTUTA
THE KING SCHOOL CLASS OF 2024
WHY JULIAN IS A TEEN TO WATCH:
• GPA - 4.40
• Honors Society, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020
• Advanced to the SSNCT Nationals, 2022, 2023. The King School Quiz Bowl Team, 2202 - present.
• First Place in Connecticut (2021). Odyssey of the Mind Team. Performed at World Finals in Florida.
• 8th grade: AP Computer Science A, Score of 5
• Created a year-long Independent Study so he could work on self-taught projects for academic credit, such as dynamic linker and AlphaZero AI - he does this while excelling in King’s highest-level classes.
• Took AP Calculus BC, AP Physics
C Mechanics – a course that is usually restricted to seniors. He is one of the top students in physics class despite being a junior.
• Taught AP Computer Science A, Python, Java, Unity, 3D modeling at SummerTech, a coding camp where he is assigned to teach the most advanced students. Last summer he designed and taught the logic gates curriculum, including binary, signed integers, binary addition, and latches.
• An essential presence on King’s Quiz Bowl team; since joining the team two years ago, the team has advanced to the Small School National Championship Tournament in Chicago.
• A competitive runner on the King Varsity Cross Country Team, and he participates in the STEM club, where his knowledge has raised the club’s skill level exponentially.
My interest in computer science began… when my mom showed me Scratch in kindergarten. From there, I taught myself Scratch. In the following years, I experimented regularly with all sorts of programming languages using CodeAcademy. I knew enough in elementary school to program a website, a 3D driving game in Unity using Javascript, and other projects, and showcase them each year at the district’s tech night.
My personal mantra is… ensure a balance between work and fun. I see a lot of people my age staying up late working on homework, often procrastinating while doing so. I prefer to get my work done in a timely fashion so I can leave time for everything but school.
My career goals include… being some sort of software engineer.
In 10 years I’ll be… exploring the new technologies that haven’t been discovered yet. I love learning about new technologies.
One day I’d love to… extend what’s possible in the field of computer science. I give back to my community by… teaching at SummerTech camp at SUNY Purchase, and creating software. Every summer I teach programming and organize fun events for campers at SummerTech. I always have a blast doing that. Last summer, I created an app that schedules games for the FairWest Public School Squash League, which encompasses Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, New Canaan, New Haven, Westport, and Hartford. In freshman year, I built a game engine that allowed young artists and musicians to create their own music and artwork for a popular video game, resulting in tens of millions social media views of their work. Hundreds of thousands have played games built using
my engine. I still struggle to comprehend the impact that it has had.
My academic interests are… math, physics, and history.
The best thing about my school was… the other students are very nice to me. I’ve never had a serious issue with someone else at school.
I would love to discover… a law which is a compromise between the need for users to understand what their software does to their computer, and the need for corporations to keep much of their source code private.
My dream job would be... any job where I work with others to solve a computer science problem. I have a lot of fun working on difficult computer science problems, and I love the idea of sharing that with others.
MACY MILLONES
ST. LUKES SCHOOL CLASS OF 2023

• Social Media Coordinator for Tara Ochman
• Repeatedly elected to positions in her school’s student government
• Member of the Middle and Upper School Debate Teams, and the MS Model UN (earning an Honorable Mention), she gave an impassioned 8th-grade speech on gun violence, participated in the COLT World Language Poetry Recitation contest and created a video to support the Fox G1 Syndrome Club that she co-founded to help raise awareness and funds for that disease.
My passion for politics began… when I started campaigning for middle school Student Council positions at the ripe age of 13.
Before public speaking you can find me… walking around my house practicing with vigorous hand gestures ;)
My personal mantra is… you’re doing the best you can…try to enjoy the ride and find the good…even in the trivial things.
Being a two-sport athlete has taught me… the value in not putting as much pressure on the season's outcome and rather devoting my energy to creating long lasting relationships with my teammates.
I spent my summer… coaching tennis, babysitting, spending time with my best friends, eating yummy food, and reading good books.
Something that would surprise people about me is… I have a food account on Instagram called @ munchwithmace (shameless plug) and I love to write poetry.
I find my Zen by… listening to the New York Times’ Daily podcast, going for runs, eating tons of ice cream, and jamming out to anything Taylor Swift.
My role models are… my parents and all of my St. Luke’s teachers and mentors.
One day I’d love to… be a 60 Minutes correspondent or a CNN news anchor, join change making initiatives in the interest of social justice, learn sign language and piano and open a local bakery with my Dad. (Gotta shoot for the stars!)
The secret to time management is… waiting until the last minute, kidding… don’t do that! Make a list of your tasks on a white board and check them off as you go!

I’m currently working on a photocatalytic method and a nanoparticle-based reactor to clean up oil spills as well as a novel design for converting methane into a viable source of fuel.
The thing I'm most excited about in college is... hands-on research opportunities and new experiences for both personal and academic growth.
My best study tip is... using the Feynman Technique, because when you teach a concept to others, you are more likely to retain and truly understand that information as opposed to just memorizing it.
My passion for science began… in fifth grade when I participated in my first science fair. I created “e-Squid,” an ocean buoy and Faraday device that generated electricity from waves by harnessing energy from both their vertical and horizontal displacement.
My ideal family vacation is... skiing in Austria.
My secret to time management is... prioritizing tasks and creating to-do lists.
I would describe myself as… creative, entrepreneurial, and a problem solver. When I have downtime you can find me... walking my dog, sailing, boating, and hanging out with my friends.
My career goals include... being the CEO of my own energy or tech company.
My favorite restaurant is… Hinoki in Greenwich.

NIKOLAS SULKOWSKI
BRUNSWICK SCHOOL CLASS OF 2023
WHY NIKI IS A TEEN TO WATCH:
• Built a contraption with two long rotating arms on a motor, a device that generates the centrifugal force needed to create artificial gravity so that he could measure its effect on lima bean plants in anticipation of man’s first voyage to Mars.
• Took seven high level classes, including three APs
• Played Darcey in the Upper Schhol musical, Newsies
• Recipient of the Fairfield Biology Prize
• Captain of the cross country and track team
• Instrumental in starting a winter running program
My deep interest in life on Mars began… in the summer of 2022 when I first saw the photos NASA released from the James Webb Space Telescope. Although the telescope’s primary subject wasn’t specifically our solar system, I became really interested in the possibilities of life in outer space and our future in exploring it. This interest inspired me to pursue an independent research project about gravity’s effect on life in outer space.
The best part about my school was… my relationships with the faculty and peers. Throughout my five years at Brunswick, I developed strong connections with my teachers that inspired new interests that I never thought I would have such as creative writing, poetry, and the performing arts as well as strengthened my passion for subjects that I already loved such as science, computer science, and math. The sense of camaraderie among my peers was also invaluable to my high school experience. Whether inside or outside the classroom, I always felt an overwhelming sense of support from my teachers, the Brunswick administration, and my fellow students. Although I’m excited for college, I’m going to miss Brunswick immensely. Running provides me… with constant physical and mental challenges as well as an incredibly positive and supportive community. I’ve enjoyed being a captain on both the Brunswick Varsity Cross Country and Track & Field teams particularly because running has challenged me in ways that I have not yet encountered and I enjoyed helping my teammates face those challenges. The unique dynamic between the team and solitary nature of the sport as well as the physical demands and discipline required to improve is really motivating to me. Since joining these teams in the beginning of high school to fulfill
my sports requirement, running has become an integral part of my life that I hope to continue pursuing.
My dream job would be… working as an aerospace engineer for NASA. The prospect of contributing to the design and development of cutting-edge technology while collaborating with a diverse team of problem-solvers excites me. I would be able to apply my passion for engineering, but the design aspect puts a heavy emphasis on the use of physics and art which I also enjoy.
I would describe myself as… a pretty easy-going person.
In the fall I will be… attending Yale University.
I spent my summer (and the last 3 years)... working at Joe’s Pizzeria in New Canaan, CT as well as training for Ironman 70.3 Maine. I stepped far out of my comfort zone with an event of this magnitude, but I have really enjoyed the training and the challenge so far. The best pizzeria in New Canaan has proven to have great fuel for endurance sports!
I like to decompress by… playing guitar as well as playing with my dog, Poppy. I’ve been playing guitar for most of my life and have always enjoyed covering other songs as well as the occasional jam session with friends.
My ideal family vacation is… exploring a new city or country with my family. I totally understand the allure of hot beach vacations, but I usually like to stay on my feet and explore.

METHODOLOGY: To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process and Internet research process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. To create the list, DataJoe Research facilitated an online peer-voting process. We paired this with an Internet research process to identify success characteristics. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a lawyer's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that lawyer was excluded from the list. In addition, we checked available public sources to identify lawyers disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board. These entities were excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.
FINAL NOTE: We recognize that there are many good lawyers who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding lawyers in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination and Internet research campaign are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective lawyers may not appear on the list.

SIMPLY THE BEST
Welcome to athome magazine’s fourteenth annual A-List Awards.
In each issue, athome dedicates our pages to the work of our talented design community: everyone from rising stars to the sought-after pros. With our A-List Awards, we have the chance to gather everyone in one space for an evening of celebration. We celebrate the collaborative partnerships, the clever innovation, and the creativity; all abundant in the completed projects by this year’s entrants. Our esteemed panel of judges—which includes some fresh faces this year— had the very difficult task of choosing the finalists from a truly impressive pool of submissions, and we thank our judges for giving their time and expertise to this year’s competition.
The following is a listing of the 2023 A-List Awards finalists by category. Please note that this listing includes the entrant’s name and contact information for each finalist project.
