While they’re not designers, these are the people designers call on when it comes to appliance recommendations. You won’t buy anything at Clarke, so there’s simply no pressure. What you can do is compare more Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove models than anywhere in New England. Explore a living portfolio of kitchens created by the region’s top designers. You will leave inspired with new knowledge to make your appliance selections with confidence. Showroom Manager Jeremy McCulla has been recognized by the design industry as Boston’s top customer service professional. Chef de Cuisine at Ocean House
Please tell us about your role as Chef de Cuisine at Ocean House. Within my role as Chef de Cuisine of COAST, Chef Feury and I work very hard to collaborate on new menu ideas. It’s a great part of my job, because we get to challenge each other in order to serve the guests better. What are your favorite ingredients this season? Marcona almonds, pistachios, red kuri squash and parsnips.
Describe what makes the dining experience at Ocean House so special. Within fine dining, food should look beautiful, as well as convey an emotion. We make sure that our dishes are impactful in both areas. Do you have a cooking philosophy can share? Aside from looking beautiful, food should have a soul to it. It should be a reflection of the chef, both in terms of the plating and taste.
Three of our own hospitality experts share travel tips, memorable getaways and news about the resorts.
Do you have any upcoming travel plans? This year I’m looking to travel somewhere where I can have a cultural experience. As much as I’d like to relax on the beach somewhere, I’d rather immerse myself in a different culture like Italy or Mexico. Where is your hometown and what’s the best thing to see there? My hometown is Hackensack, New Jersey. The best thing there is an old hamburger joint called White Manna. It’s a relic of the '40s and voted one of the best burgers in the state. Describe a favorite vacation. My trip to Spain stands out as one of the greatest vacations I’ve ever taken. Our only plans were to rent a car and book a flight. We bought a map of the country and just drove around wherever the wind took us. At some point, we ended up in France as well as Morocco.

FLAVORS OF THE SEASON
Fall and winter offer an amazing array of exquisite food and new talent
1
Chef Eddie is packing dishes old and new with local comfort flavors that come with autumn like pumpkin and mushrooms, in addition to freshly caught fish.
2
With Chef Terence, Eddie is also buying as much end-ofseason produce from local farms as possible, including heirloom tomatoes. They'll preserve them and use as flavor-boosters for the main dishes they plan to serve at COAST throughout the fall and winter seasons.
About the CHEF DE CUISINE Eddie Montalvo, the Chef de Cuisine at COAST, rose through the ranks of top-tier restaurants in the ferociously competitive pressure-cooker that is the New York City food world. Fresh from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island, he landed a job at David Bouley’s Bouley Bakery. From there he worked for Danny Meyer, the famed New York restauranteur behind the Union Square Café, Gramercy Tavern and Shake Shack.

According to Chef Eddie, “Seasonal should equal fresh, with some sort of textual component and a contrast between fat and acidity, a contrast of colors.”

Executive Pastry Chef Jessica Quiet, who joined the culinary team in August, plans to expand the “wow factor on all desserts.”

“That was an eye-opening experience” he recalls “and a whole different approach to leadership and hospitality.” After his time in New York, Montalvo headed to Newport and brought casual finedining to Fluke, a staple of elevated dining in that jewel of seaside resort towns. When the Covid pandemic shuttered the restaurant, friends in the business connected him to

COAST—a perfect fit for his culinary sensibilities. Ocean House’s Executive Chef Terence Feury remembered him from Newport, as did Matthew MacCartney, the resort’s Group Director of Wine & Culinary Education, who knew the chef from his days and nights cooking at Fluke. “What Eddie brings is a breath of fresh air to the kitchen at COAST,” says Executive Chef Terence Feury. “It has a ripple effect on the entire team!” Adds Gabrielle Clark, Group Director—Food and Beverage Operations at Ocean House, “In coming back into the fine dining atmosphere, Eddie brings a mindset that’s a little playful and more approachable, and I think that that's what guests nowadays are looking for. They appreciate great food, but they also don't want to have to be in a full three-piece suit. Eddie brings that relaxed attitude to the restaurant.”
A
Vermont native, Jessica Quiet began her pastry journey in high school by competing in the SkillsUSA baking challenge. She finished first in the state and fourth nationally. After graduating from Johnson & Wales University, she worked at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before taking a role at The Swan and Dolphin Resort in Florida and becoming a chocolatier. She worked under a World Pastry Team Competition judge at the Orlando World Center Marriott for eight years, prior to stints at the Twin Cities JW Marriott and The Lodge at Spruce Peak in Vermont, where she was named Leader of the Year 2022. Through the American Culinary Federation (ACF), she debuted an online Chocolate Bon-Bon Seminar class and was featured in the National Culinary Review Magazine. An industry leader, she’s been a keynote speaker for the ACF National Convention, worked with Innovation labs in Chicago and recently competed in the Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship. Chef Jessica is “thrilled to be a part of Ocean House and looks forward to expanding the elegance as well as the wow factor on all desserts.”

THE WAY I TRAVEL
Left: This trade magazine is a must when traveling. Below:
Group Director of Wine & Culinary Education
Please tell us about your position as Group Director of Wine & Culinary Education for the resorts. My role is to curate the wine program, as well as educational programming in the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts (CWCA). What are some new wines you have lined up for the season? I am very excited to add a selection of boutique Italian wines from Artisan Wines, which I’ve followed for years. They will be brought in exclusively for Ocean House, including the Timorasso Pitasso from Claudio Mariotto and the wines of Noventa in Lombardia within the Botticino DOC—the only wine region in the middle of an ancient marble quarry.
Describe what makes the dining experience at Ocean House so special. Exceptional quality food, gracious and professional service within a stunning setting. What is your approach for the perfect food and beverage pairings? I have my own saying: 80% of food and wine go together, and there are maybe 10% of things that really don’t go and 10% of absolute, knock-it-out-ofthe-park, homerun pairings. I try to take the pretense out of wine, so I tell people to drink and eat what they like! When you’re not working, what are your go-to dishes and beverages at the resort? I would love to sit down to our octopus appetizer in the Bistro with a glass of Timorasso from La Spinetta, then perhaps our simple rack of lamb with the Roccolo Grassi Amarone that is set to arrive.
Where do you live, and what’s the coolest thing to see there? I am fortunate to live in Jamestown, RI. Here it is all about the water. Great little beaches like Mackerel Cove, some of the best sailing in the world, and breathtaking views from Beavertail State Park at the southernmost tip of the island. Describe a favorite vacation. One year we went to St. Barth’s, and it was amazing. I remember enjoying lobster tagliolini with Marcel Deiss Altenberg at lunch, with my bare feet in the sand at the Ile de France Hotel, and then being offered a frozen splash of green Chartreuse after lunch at Nikki Beach. What is your travel-related guilty pleasure? Long lunches at threeMichelin-starred restaurants. Basking in the plushness and extravagance of it all and then embracing the requisite long digestive walk afterwards. It is a luxury that can only be experienced while on vacation.

Chef-in-Residence Dinners

About the GROUP DIRECTOR of the CWCA When Matthew MacCartney ran the kitchen at Jamestown Fish, the sensationally popular spot in nearby Jamestown, the dining establishment was named one of Wine Enthusiast’s Top 100 wine restaurants in the country. It also won several Best of Award Excellence honors from Wine Spectator magazine. As he grew more passionate about wine as a critical part of the fine-dining experience, MacCartney was invited to prepare a dinner at Ocean House. “As a guest chef,” he recalls, “I thought, ‘Wow, if I didn't have my own restaurant, I'd love to work here!’” In 2018, Jamestown Fish closed and MacCartney got his chance. As Group Director for the Center of Wine & Culinary Arts (CWCA) at Ocean House, MacCartney oversees the award-winning wine program at the hotel and Weekapaug Inn, presiding over a cellar of more than 2,000 wines, including a small allocation each year of the extremely rare red wine Romanée-Conti, which can fetch as much as $19,000 a bottle! This season, MacCartney, Executive Chef Terence Feury and the sommelier team offer an amazing lineup of wine and culinary classes and events not

only for Ocean House guests, but also for wine connoisseurs from near and far. “As a resort activity, we’ll have a simple cooking class on how to make guacamole, or how to open oysters,” he says. “Later in the day, we’ll do a quick wine class on different themes, all of which is complimentary to hotel guests.” But it’s the special events that draw local residents and out-of-towners. Westerly Wednesdays, for example, features a very reasonably priced, multi-course dinner from 5:30 to 9pm in the hotel’s Bistro, including a complimentary glass of wine selected by the sommelier. New this fall at CWCA, meanwhile, is Aperitivo!—wine tastings with informal and informative talks on the subject and delectable small bites. “Aperitivo is like a couple’s night out,” notes MacCartney, “where members of our wonderful community can
come down to our wine cellar and hear us talk about a range of topics—say, wines from Italy— along with snacks that go with them and how to make them. Then they can head up to COAST for dinner.” And for serious aficionados there’s the resort’s Wine Camp, a weekend-long oenophile adventure that includes a two-night stay in the hotel and a tour of the Jonathan Edwards Winery in North Stonington, CT, where campers enjoy lunch and custom-blend a case of their own wines and personal labels. Back at Ocean House, there’s dinner in the Club Room and the next morning, a Sunday jazz brunch. The wine and culinary teams are also putting together a series of special Chef-in-Residence dinners with visiting chefs. Past guest chefs have included Michelin-starred chefs Gabriel Kreuther and Shaun Hergatt. To learn more about CWCA classes and events, visit oceanhouseevents.com.

Below:
What three things are must-haves in your carry-on bag? Chapstick, noise-canceling headphones and a portable power bank. Also, if traveling to another climate or with a checked bag, a full change of clothes and shoes will be included.
Joe Witherell
Chef Concierge at Ocean House
Please tell us about your role as Chef Concierge at Ocean House. I have long said that concierge is the best job in any hotel! Many people think we are simply booking car service and dinner reservations, but our primary responsibility is to spend time getting to know our guests and finding out what makes them unique, then using that information to personalize their experience and make them feel special. When you’re not working, what are your go-to activities at the resort? One of my favorite activities is an afternoon cruise on our yacht, The Dandy, with Capt. Todd Mennillo. He has a wealth of knowledge about the history of Watch Hill and Westerly, which adds to the experience. I am also keen to hone my skills on the croquet court with Steven Morgan, an internationally ranked pro whose expertise I need to up my game!
Do you have a philosophy about hospitality you can share? “Put yourself in their shoes” and “It’s not about you.” I always try to think of how happy the guest will be when we can make magic happen for them. Finish this sentence: A sensational travel experience always includes… Engaging with the locals to see how they live and what they enjoy most about the local area. I always ask the concierge or bartender at my hotel where the hospitality people go after work. People who work in hospitality are always eager to show you a great time, and I invariably get invited to join on a local’s favorite hike, to a secluded, secret beach or to join in a family dinner and enjoy the true local cuisine.
Santorini, Greece, tops the destination bucket list.
Where is your hometown and what’s the coolest thing to see there? I am from North Adams, Massachusetts, tucked into the northwest corner of the state in the beautiful rolling hills of The Berkshires. There is a great arts and culture scene there, and the highlight is Mass MoCA—one of the largest contemporary and performing arts centers in the country. Describe a favorite vacation. My favorite destination is Hawaii, specifically Oahu. I used to spend three months there every winter for my former job and have really gotten to know the island intimately. That said, I try to go back at least once a year, and I always discover something new on each return visit. What is your travel-related guilty pleasure? Caviar and Champagne. I try to start every vacation with a healthy dose, because how else do you really know if you’re treating yourself? Where is the one place that tops your travel bucket list? Santorini, Greece. The photos and videos I’ve seen are breathtaking. From the colors to the scenery, environment, food and arts, I would love to take some time to travel there.

About the THE CHEF CONCIERGE / Member, Les Clefs d’Or USA “The most important thing to being a great concierge is having great listening skills,” says Joe Witherell, Chef Concierge at Ocean House. “It’s gathering subtle bits of information that come up in conversations with guests or e-mails that can be used to make their stay special.” He calls them “little golden nuggets of information,” explaining, “That is what sets apart a good hotel from a great hotel.” Witherell has been honing listening and other essential skills since the start of his career in luxury hospitality as a waiter at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. Getting his sommelier certification, he advanced into management and became a concierge and later developed the concierge program at The Newberry in Boston, on the site of the former Ritz-Carlton. And in 2021, he gained membership in Les Clefs d’Or USA, the elite national association of top fourand five-star hotel concierges,

earning the right to wear the association’s crossed gold keys on his lapel. “Seasoned international travelers recognize the gold keys,” says Witherell, “and they know that it's a guarantee of great service.” Long before guests sign into the Reservations Desk at Ocean House, he has been at work— arranging transportation from the airport, acknowledging a birthday with something in the room, making reservations at the hotel or at nearby restaurants booked for weeks. Usually, guests are unaware that he and his staff are picking up clues about their wishes, then creating ways to fulfill them. Earlier this year, four women checked into the hotel and came to see him for his thoughts on their stay. In conversation, one of the women casually mentioned that they were moms escaping home for the weekend and hoping to have a “bottomless glass of wine.” Witherell and his staff quickly put together a large platter in

Clyde’s Cider Mill— the oldest steam-powered cider mill in the U.S.—in Mystic, and custom nature tours of Quonochontaug Pond, guided by the Weekapaug Inn’s Naturalist Captain Mark Hengen. Cultural Hub D
owntown Westerly is quite the destination. This fall and winter, The United Theatre on Canal Street is luring Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn guests to stay an extra night to explore the bounty of offerings at this new cultural complex—live music, theatre, performance, movies, film, art and events. The calendar is filled with a diversity of expression: opera, folk, world music, ballet, plays, comedy, spoken word, improv and art exhibitions. “It’s a world-class cultural complex that’s designed to welcome audiences and our community to the arts in every way possible,” says Executive Director Carly Callahan. “We’re a nonprofit with the mission to unite community through the arts.” The United Theatre was built in 1926 as a vaudeville house, then became a movie theatre,
which closed in 1986. In 2019, Chuck Royce and a group of visionary community members began to imagine more than just the restoration of the movie theatre. They expanded into the old Montgomery Ward department store to create performance spaces, a 600-seat black box theatre, three venues for film, an events space and gallery. Since The United opened in July 2021, the community has flocked to performances, events and classes. “We're on track to host over 110 live events and welcome more than 50,000 community members through our doors,” Callahan says. She joined the team in November 2022. She’d been the managing director of Seaview Productions, a New York City-based, Tony-Award-winning company producing theatre, film, television and media. The isolation of the pandemic underscored

for Callahan how much people desire to come together as an audience. “There's a common moment of connection and empathy, and compassion and recognition of the human experience and journey,” Callahan says, “I believe that art uniquely provides that.”
Partnership is at the heart of the vision, which draws together regional community partners such as Salt Marsh Opera, Trinity Repertory Theatre and the O’Neill Theatre. And The United is drawing people of all ages to classes run by RI Philharmonic Music School. Meanwhile, next door, The Café offers ingredient-forward, New American cuisine. The United is a hub for a growing cultural campus. A philanthropist has a new museum of American Impressionism in the works. In Wilcox Park, a 14-acre botanical park in downtown Westerly, renovation has started on a historic cottage, which will become a residence for artists. Prelude to The Civil War Rifled Cannon Trials at Watch Hill, 1860
GENERAL CHARLES T. JAMES Inventor and U.S. Senator Gen. Charles T. James was a self-educated mechanic and textile mill owner. While Chairman of the U.S. Senate Patents Committee, James patented a rifled projectile system of cannon and shot he claimed could throw shells twice as heavy, twice as far, with half the powder, and with greater accuracy than other rifled cannons under development. His weapon system, he contended, was cheaper and faster to put into service—James would retrofit existing U. S. Army smooth bore cannon stockpiles. On May 18, 1860, the Secretary of War appointed a board of five ordnance officers to

examine and test James’ weapon system at Watch Hill, commencing June 15 with a report and recommendations to the Secretary of War no later than November 1, 1860. James rifled 12, 14, 24, 32 and 42-pdr. field artillery and siege guns were fired from a temporary battery at Watch Hill’s lighthouse point, down East Beach to Weekapaug. Eight cannoneers were required to fire the field pieces. The ordnance board, dignitaries, military men and spectators observed. From the “Great Bank” (famous for being Taylor Swift’s current property) to the little schoolhouse, a line of onlookers waited to see the fireworks. Steamers Tiger and Water

Lily advertised excursions: “A newly invented rifled cannon will be tested at Watch Hill.” The proprietors of the Watch Hill, Narragansett and Atlantic Houses, and Dickens Inn, after a very slow season, were grateful for the Army’s Watch Hill occupation. THE TRIALS George Nash, his three brothers, sister and brother-in-law, stood looking down at the surf crashing along the five-mile stretch of East Beach from the promontory next to the family burial plot, land George would build the Ocean House hotel on in 1868. A dozen students watched from the schoolhouse. A fiery flame and thick smoke came out of the muzzle of the cannon, followed by a deafening roar and shock wave. The brothers ducked, the children screamed, and the Army officers looked on in amazement as the highpitched screech of the James-rifled projectile exploded by spinning two-and-a-half miles down East Beach splitting the 13’ x 17’-thick white oak target. The trials demonstrated, as
predicted, how at a small cost James’ artillery did throw shot twice the weight, twice as far, and with half the powder of smooth bore guns, with lethal accuracy.
HISTORICAL FACTS
SUCCESSFUL RESULTS On November 1, 1860, the Board of Ordnance Officers recommended that half of the smoothbore cannons of the U.S. should be rifled according to James’ plans. On December 10, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Federal Union, and on April 12, 1861, South Carolina’s troops opened fire on Fort Sumter. On April 10, 1862, during the siege of Confederate Fort Pulaski, Georgia, believed to be impenetrable with 11-feet thick masonry walls, the James rifle proved its worth. Union Brigadier General Quincy Gillmore said: “No better piece for breaching can be desired than the 42-pounder James.” Sadly, on October 17, 1862, Gen. James was fatally wounded by an accidental explosion from one of his shells.
“The Big (General James) Gun weighing 8,462 lbs., which has been lying at the Westerly depot for some time, was taken to Watch Hill Wednesday.” The Narragansett Weekly, June 10, 1860

S
ited on an enviable perch overlooking ocean, beach and salt pond, the Weekapaug Inn has welcomed thousands of guests over its almost 125-year history. Such endurance is not common among hotels; they come and go, changing names, owners and interior decor. When the fourth generation of Buffum family proprietors put the Inn on the market fifteen years ago, the quiet community of Weekapaug was concerned. What would the Inn become? Who would run it? With what intentions? As it turned out, one of the Inn’s neighbors had an idea: make the Inn a year-round destination for guests and a resource for the community, while maintaining its unique character. Keep the name and the sturdy shingle profile—with a difference. For the new century, invest in a ground-up restoration with modern standards of comfort and contemporary standards of energy efficiency and environmental stewardship. “Comfort and luxury have had different meanings over the years,” says Lang Wheeler. “The Weekapaug Inn is luxurious, not only in its constructed amenities, but in the beauty of its
setting.” Lang, who co-owns the property with his partner Chuck Royce, lives in his own Weekapaug residence. Lang’s wife, Kathy Metcalfe, provides aesthetic direction and leadership for social events. Like Frederick C. Buffum, the Inn’s founder, Lang and Kathy’s local perspective suggested an expanded goal for the Inn. For the new era, the Inn’s irreplaceable presence could serve guests and the community in all four seasons. The year-round approach had become an economic necessity, and the new owners understood the challenge and the opportunity. The result is a group of buildings and landscape that honor both history and native ecology.

Our celebration of this birthday will be low-key, but we plan to provide our guests with a feeling for the Inn’s history and tradition in an entertaining way.
Above: Spring 1939, the new Weekapaug Inn races to completion, for its re-opening on June 29.
A renewed physical plant ensures a sustainable future for the Inn. Unseen but essential systems, such as geothermal wells for heating and cooling and a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant, serve both guests and the ecosystem. Inside, public spaces, dining venues and guest rooms offer creature comforts that have earned major hospitality awards since the Inn’s reopening in 2012. These include membership in Relais & Châteaux in the Inn’s first year of operations, Five Stars in Forbes, and very high rankings in the Conde Nast Readers’ Poll. As it approaches its century-and-a-quarter birthday, the Inn’s owners and their team have developed a business model that pairs luxury standards with a commitment to environmental stewardship.
A guest at the Inn will sense its unique qualities when first entering the property. Its southeast prospect remains open to panoramic views of Quonochontaug Pond and the ocean beyond. It stands alone on its peninsula, a focal point for the quiet community that surrounds it. Its site provides a feeling of shelter and privacy. Back in the 1890s, when Frederick C. Buffum gazed from the porch of his Weekapaug cottage to the virgin two-mile beach beyond, he remarked to his wife Phoebe, “The view from this cottage is too lovely not to share with friends.” In its first iteration on the ocean beach, the 1899 Inn’s rooms were somewhat spartan, with running water in the bathrooms

at the end of the hall. The Buffum philosophy was to get the guests outside to appreciate their surroundings, go swimming, sail, play tennis or lawn bowl with friends—and enjoy the fresh air and ocean breezes of Weekapaug. Later, after the Hurricane of ’38 brought the Buffums and their rebuilt 1939 Inn to its current location, the feeling was still informal and carefree. Accommodations were more comfortable because each room now had its own bath. “I’ve known Weekapaug and the Inn long before we became involved at the Inn,” says Lang. “Many of the Inn’s guests come from nearby metropolitan areas. They are looking for a beautiful location to unwind within easy reach of their homes. In the redesign, we included features that not only serve our summer guests. We’ve provided the details that create a unique experience for those who travel here from fall through spring.”
Kathy Metcalfe agrees. “The pace is different from late September through early spring, but opportunities for rest and relaxation are equally abundant. Couples come for the quiet, and the pleasure of a wood fireplace burning real wood. They enjoy a delicious meal in the restaurant, and a long walk on the shore. Guests who crave a spa experience can be delivered by Volvo to the five-star Ocean & Harvest Spa, just down the road at Ocean House, the Inn’s sister property.” Adds Lang, “Nature thrives around Quonnie Pond, and the Inn keeps an inventory of the necessary gear for the cool season and the vagaries of its weather. Rain slickers and Wellingtons are available in our Hunter closet for guests to borrow. And every room offers a set of binoculars and a Sibley Bird Guide for the nature lovers who appreciate the lnn’s location on the Atlantic flyway during fall and spring migrations. Fishing is a popular pastime deep into the cool season, with flycasting right off our ocean beach.” Daniel Abrashoff, the Inn’s General Manager, mentions another perk for Weekapaug’s quieter months. “Our guests will often employ the Inn as home base to explore our southern New England coastline. They may borrow our Volvos to tour the area, from the charming villages of Stonington and Mystic, Connecticut, to the mansions of Newport and the cliffs of Block Island. We have maps and guides for guests who want to sightsee on their own.” Lang and Kathy note that the Inn, festively dressed inside and out for the holidays, has become particularly appealing to families. The Inn’s two-bedroom suites feature a den with fold-out couch for extra sleep space. A gas fireplace and full kitchen and dining area complete the setting for a perfect, private celebration. Larger parties rent Inn rooms adjacent to the suites so even more people can share the holiday celebration inside the suite. Most recently, the Inn has expanded its amenities with the construction of the MeetingHouse. This carefully crafted post and beam structure overlooks the Inn’s best panoramic views with floor-to-ceiling windows that retract in fine weather, and wrap the interiors in comfort and quiet on days when the forecast is less balmy. “It has perfect acoustics, and we designed it as a unique private gathering place for groups who book the Inn for business meetings and retreats, family reunions, and special celebrations.” As it reaches its century-and-a-quarter mark in 2024, the owners and staff continue to add features and activities that enhance the Inn’s reputation for relaxed luxury in an exceptional setting. “Our celebration of this birthday will be low-key,” says Lang, “but we plan to provide our guests with a feeling for the Inn’s history and tradition in an entertaining way.”
We look forward to welcoming guests who have been joining us for generations— as well as new guests—during this celebratory year. Daniel Abrashoff General Manager of Weekapaug Inn

T
he art of living extends beyond the home to the great American hotels that make guests feel at once like family and like sophisticated travelers to a genteel time and place. In Watch Hill, Rhode Island, that spirit magically resides at the Ocean House resort and the newly opened Bemelmans Suite of luxurious rooms, furnishings and amenities with breathtaking views of Montauk, Block Island and the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel is itself a work of art, as well as an homage to one of the great authors of children’s books, whose illustrations brought to life a now-vanished world that was as whimsical as it was sophisticated and glamorous.

Above: Interior designer Iliana Moore brought in New York artist Tug Rice to custom-design wallpaper and accessories for the suite.
Constructed just after the end of the Civil War and directly on the sand, the foundation of the original 159-room Ocean House had shifted along with its fortunes. By 2004, it had closed and was scheduled to be demolished. Yet if anyone could turn the beloved (if ramshackle) pile into a luxury resort, it was longtime Watch Hill summer residents Deborah and Chuck Royce. After spending five years rebuilding a luxurious new resort on the old hotel’s footprint—from the sand up—the new Ocean House opened in 2010 with 49 guestrooms, 20 signature suites and 10 cottages, along with a spa and five-star restaurants. But the gem of the luxury seaside resort is the Bemelmans Suite, an 850-square-foot sanctuary with a large living room and seasonal fireplace and an atmosphere of uninhibited wonder and delight! It is entirely befitting that a hotel suite of such joie de vivre be inspired
by Ludwig Bemelmans, author and illustrator of the world-famous series of enchanting children’s books about Madeline, a brave and daring seven-year-old at a Catholic boarding in Paris during the middle of the twentieth century. Leaving his native Austria at 16 for America, Bemelmans started his career at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York. There he cultivated a love for hospitality and art, ultimately creating his “Adieu to The Old Ritz” series. Also famous for his work at Bemelmans Bar in The Carlyle, he painted whimsical murals of Central Park and other scenes. Rumor has it, he and his family received room and board from the hotel in exchange for his iconic creations. The Bemelmans Suite features more than 12 framed pieces of the artist's work, with some 150 more paintings and illustrations in the hotel’s Bemelmans Gallery curated by Hilary Hatfield. Today, Ocean House is home to the largest private

collection on display in North America, if not the world. What’s striking about the Bemelmans Suite at Ocean House is the attention to period detail and the Royce’s genius in finding exactly the right designers and artisans for the job, then giving them free reign to work their magic. They called on their friend Iliana Moore, of the eponymous interior design firm in New York, who had worked with the couple for nearly two decades. She, in turn, brought in Tug Rice, a millennial New York artist with Belle Époque sensibilities, to custom-design wallpaper, lamp shades, curtains and throw pillows for both the suite and the hotel clubroom. “I wanted a lighthearted seaside atmosphere but didn't want it to be childish— we all wanted adults to be happy there, too,” says Moore. “The beautiful pale blues and yellows are quiet so that Bemelmans’s art and Tug’s wallpapers pop!” The entire suite, in fact, is awash in muted colors that reflect the shining sea, sand and the cabanas on the beach below. Meanwhile, in counterpoint to the serenity of the suite, the scenes Tug created on paper and fabric bring to life the kind of leisurely activities—boating, bathing,
strolling the grounds—for which the original hotel was known. “It was Chuck who, rather than using the typical nautical artwork found in New England hotels, had this vision of using illustration in the way you see in hotels in New York and London and Paris,” the young artist says. “He wanted a whimsical style that harkens back to the Twenties and Thirties.” This is the delightful milieu that envelops guests checking into the suite. Families will also find a wealth of Madeline-themed take-homes: Madeline books and stuffed dolls, house-made madeleines, and the specialty Madeline mocktail. An adjoining Deluxe King Guest Room, also with direct ocean views and decorated in a similar delightful motif is also available to reserve, turning the Bemelmans Suite into a luxurious two-bedroom retreat. “It’s the iconic American aesthetic—the best of America,” observes Moore, “and it's hard to find today. When you go to a chain, even if it's a super high-end hotel, it still feels like a chain. But the Ocean House reflects the owners’ artistic taste and their love of Watch Hill.” To reserve a stay, please visit oceanhouseri.com or call 855.678.0364.

MAGIC & WONDER Celebrate the Season at Ocean House
A
s the days grow short and frost on the grass turns to fields blanketed with snow, autumnal gatherings and wintry celebrations remind us of family and friends like no other time of the year. That celebratory spirit descends on Ocean House each year as the resort works to outdo itself and bring holiday feasting and fun to a new level. This season is no different, as the pride of Watch Hill readies itself for some much-anticipated fanfare. As the hotel and grounds have gained more and more generational cachet over time, this time of year has become a tradition for families to reunite and friends to reestablish connections against the backdrop of seasonal

beauty and exquisite service. For the fall and winter, Ocean House guests can expect more of the festive goings-on that visitors and locals alike make a special trip for every year.

Known the world over for its cuisine, the Thanksgiving Buffet at Ocean House is an annual treat that draws people from near and far to enjoy the ambience of happiness and gratitude. Served all day and featuring the delicious classic dishes of a genuine New England Thanksgiving, this celebratory meal has become an annual tradition for many guests. In the lustrous surroundings of Ocean House, it’s easy to understand why. Reserve early.
Among the most amazing things that happens on Thanksgiving night, after the guests have toddled off to bed, Ocean House decorators go to work like Santa’s elves, decking the halls and rekindling the Christmas spirit for another year. Guests who went to bed after the Thanksgiving celebration wake up the next morning to a hotel completely decorated for the December gifting holidays capped off by Christmas. It’s just another example of Ocean House magic that never sleeps. That holiday spirit quickly takes over the property as the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony happens November 25, officially kicking off the famed Ocean House holiday season. Right after that is dinner with Santa, which is not to be missed by kids of any age.
This time of year has become a tradition for families to reunite and friends to reestablish connections against the backdrop of seasonal beauty and exquisite service.

This joyous ritual begins with Santa riding to Ocean House on a Watch Hill fire truck, then lighting the massive tree. From there, everyone heads inside for festivities and scrumptious food. The jolly old elf goes table to table delighting guests (especially the little ones) for an unforgettable evening. And because St. Nick has a special fondness for Ocean House, Santa Brunches happen each Sunday through the end of the year, so that everyone gets their photo with The Big Man himself. There’s also the “Santa Checks In” hilarity as Santa becomes a guest of the resort for photos and fun. Outside his door, there's a custom mailbox accepting letters from his biggest fans.
LEARNING IS FUN
While younger guests are having a blast, grownups can head to the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts (CWCA) and learn from the experts how to prepare meals enjoyed on the spot, while sampling some fine vintages. Also on the menu is the annual Gingerbread House competition, where kids from the Watch Hill community vie for the title of best holiday creation and enjoy a super fun party. Things merrily roll along in that holiday mood, as the Ocean House Author Series welcomes writers including Dr. Renee Alsarraf and novelist Luanne Rice, who will be launching her new novel, Last Night, an Agatha Christie-style mystery set at Ocean House.

Ocean House is also hosting a unique Christmas party for small businesses in the area who might prefer to turn their little holiday gathering into an Ocean House affair, along with many others from the community. It’s a brilliant way to celebrate the local economy. For the much-anticipated New Year's Eve celebration, this year's theme is The Seven Seas. Whether guests choose a reserved table, lounge setting or prefer a strolling cocktail reception, the evening will include delicious food, live music and a fireworks toast when the clock strikes midnight. This cherished event is the perfect way to finish off the year—and start 2024—on a high note.

amily cottage. There are no more beautiful words in the vacation vernacular. Celebrating holidays, milestones, or just getting away, in a cottage by the shore. Gathering everyone together to enjoy life. Now update that image into five-star luxury, in newly rebuilt historic architecture, with modern amenities and exclusive views of the New England Coast. And within walking distance to the premier Ocean House, with the privileges of resort membership, a gorgeous stretch of private beach on the Atlantic Ocean, restaurants, and indoor and outdoor activities for all ages, from cooking classes to boating excursions. The Oceanic and Intercrest—these newest additions to the Ocean House Cottage Collection, sit on the highest points of Watch Hill, with an abundance of porches and decks whose views of the Atlantic Ocean and Little Narragansett Bay get better with each floor. (Yes, the houses have elevators.) Oceanic and Intercrest were designed for multigeneration
families. The owners wanted to build legacy, heritage homes where their large families could gather. They wanted spaces for people to come together and spaces where they could find private moments. Since the busy owners can’t use these houses often, they’ve opened them up to the rentals through the Cottage Collection. Now you and yours can indulge and enjoy these very special, newly rebuilt and designed properties, too.
T H E OC E A N I C
T h e O w n e rs Locals called the old shingle-style place “The Rock Pile” because it sits on a steep, boulder-rich lot. Originally constructed in 1890, it was rebuilt in the 1990s after catching fire. When Daniel Rosenthal and Courtney Granville bought it in 2020, they brought fresh ideas about how to use the space. Returning to the United States after living in Europe, they wanted to find a house their extended families could gather. And since Granville’s brothers were a Rhode Island-based builder and a master electrician, family was involved from the start.
After living in the house for six months at the start of the pandemic, Rosenthal and Granville and their three children, and Carson Granville, who visited on weekends, had a good idea of “how the house best flows and how it’s best used by family,” says Courtney Granville. “The main floor is designed to allow generations of families or large groups of friends or business associates to gather and be connected without feeling like they’re on top of one another,” says Rosenthal. Many of the nine bedrooms (the 10,400 square-foot house sleeps up to 18), open onto screened porches or decks. T h e A rc h i t e c t The owners brought in architect Meg Lyons to re-imagine the structure. Chuck Royce, Ocean House’s owner, recommended Lyons; she was the Project Manager and Lead Architect of the five-and-a-half-year rebuild of the historic 1868 hotel while an associate at Centerbrook Architects. Oceanic’s guests particularly love its references to Ocean House—the fireplace, in the first floor Quiet Room, has a curved wood mantel and textured pebble tile, inspired by one

in a suite at the hotel. Lyons was well-versed in updating and enhancing the original 1890 features, while re-orienting the house and increasing square footage. The kitchen was moved from the north to an addition on the west side. On the east side, she extended the stumpy turret that housed an awkward spiral staircase and short windows, and installed eight-foot windows that sweep around the turret to create a lightfilled, second-floor landing with ocean views. A separate staircase, with built-in bookcases, connects to the third floor. Here a circular office boasts dreamy views of the ocean and bay. It is one of Oceanic’s “many beautiful moments,” Lyons says. The architect also uses the ceiling plane to create special spaces. A coffered ceiling defines the first floor living area. The expansive kitchen draws the eye through the 14-foot-wide entry, past the 14-foot-long marble island, to a copper-accented hood flanked by a row of three windows that extends the views to Sandy Point. The room opens up to a vaulted ceiling that takes advantage of the hip roof above. Thoughtful details abound in the house, such as Lyons’ fondness for well-proportioned round windows. They bring charm to the primary bath—there’s even a (strategically placed for privacy) round window in the shower. The original arched stone porch was rebuilt and enclosed with custom arched windows, which Lyons describes as “an elegant expression of what was originally there.” Now it’s a mud room, an evocative, transitional space on the first floor, with easy access to and from the pool, with storage and a bathroom. Beyond its views, beauty and luxury, Oceanic is eminently practical. The entry floor is lined with lockers, benches, hooks and closets. A large room can be adapted for a range of activities, including corporate events (it fits 20 for a meeting). Also on the entry floor are a gym, screening room and two bedroom suites. An elevator goes up one level to the first floor, which also has two bedroom suites and a laundry room. The Builder Craftsmanship was at the heart of the original shingle style cottages, and it’s evident throughout Oceanic. Curved wood is a theme,

and Granville Builders, a boutique residential construction firm based in Wakefield, RI, with its team of master carpenters helmed by J. Carson Granville, owner, and Courtney’s brother, took on the task. “We are particularly proud of the curved structures, moldings and cabinetry, which were all designed and fabricated in-house,” says Carson Granville. The house was taken down to the studs, and the challenge his team faced was “to blend the historic elements of the house into an expansion and renovation with all the modern amenities to achieve timeless results,” he adds. He takes a lot of pride in the circular turret office, replete with a built-in curved desk for two and a banquette. Curved moldings frame windows and doors. Elliot Granville, Carson’s brother and owner of Rhode Island Energy services, did all the electrical work and was involved in the lighting design as well. “It was very fulfilling to work with family on a house that we’ll all spend time in together for years to come,” Carson Granville says. The Interior Designer Oceanic’s owners met Lindsey Harper when she had a shop in Watch Hill. “We became friendly and I saw the house, and how they lived with kids and dogs. It’s so great when you can get to know the owners before the renovation process.” She worked for two-and-a-half years on the project, meeting with the architect and contractor to go over the plans and creating schematics for the rooms. The kitchen’s mosaic backsplash, with its hues of blue, white and a touch of gold, was the starting off-point for the interior design. She created a relaxed, comfortable, livable design, expressing a love of natural textures, a variety of blues, and brass lighting fixtures that she likens to “a touch of jewelry.” In the dining room, she mirrored the shallow dome architect Lyons designed in the center of the ceiling. Beneath it, Harper added a round table, and chairs with upholstered curved backs. Grass wallpaper gives texture to the walls, and a wet bar includes a wine fridge. Wallpaper is a signature for Harper, and she uses it to give the bathrooms personality. (There are nine en-suite bathrooms, and three additional bathrooms, a total of 11.)
“I like to make smaller spaces special, and I adore working with wallpaper,” says Harper. “We made each bathroom unique and fun.” One is based on local nautical maps, another of colorful fish, and on the third floor, a “cheeky siren luring sailors.”
INTERCREST
The Owner Christopher Abreu had his eye on the property since 2004, and was just waiting for the historic house, built in 1898 across the street from Ocean House, to come on the market. The reinsurance executive had a passion for design and began investing in properties and building homes. After building nine new houses over 10 years, Abreu’s interest narrowed upon restoring historical properties. In 2019, he got his chance: the house on Plimpton Road was for sale. The project married Abreu’s love of design, historic architecture and luxurious vacation homes. It began with a complete reimagining of the property, adding a driveway and parking lot, and thinking about placement of windows, decks and porches to maximize views of both the ocean and bay (hence the name Intercrest, “between the waves”). The interior floors were warrens of small rooms. To create the welcoming spaces and amenities of a high-end luxury vacation property, the house needed a complete rebuild. They took it down to the studs, rebuilt and reinforced. The kitchen is always the focal point in homes Abreu develops, “because that’s where everyone gathers.” Four small rooms were opened to create an expansive kitchen with a massive 10-foot island with a waterfall edge, and state-of-the-art appliances. Seven bedrooms, with en-suite bathrooms, sleep up to 18 people, in the 5,100 square-foot house. Porches abound (a total of 1,500 feet). “When you think about having a great vacation, you want to be together and you want your own private spaces. The porch areas allow for that little bit of privacy, while enjoying an unbelievable view.” Abreu’s favorite porch is off the second floor back bedroom. “It’s one of the neatest porches I have ever designed or envisioned. It’s like a secret pathway to a secret porch.” He likes to have his morning coffee there, overlooking the water. “You’re having a moment with this

Each cottage has a dedicated concierge, and guests of the Oceanic and Intercrest enjoy the privileges of an Ocean House resort member. “They have phenomenal restaurants, a fitness center with a wide variety of spa treatments, and classes and activities for all ages,” says Courtney Granville, owner of Oceanic. “One of the things we love is the Ocean House Beach Club. The amenities, including chairs, umbrellas and towels, mean you don’t have to lug everything. You can show up with nothing but a book and sunglasses and enjoy a glorious day, where you feel pampered with food and beverage service while enjoying all the beach has to offer.” Ocean House provides Cottage Collection guests with an option for a private chef and/or wine tasting with an Ocean House sommelier. The OH team works with guests to tailor events. “When I hosted my executive team at Oceanic in June, we had Ocean House run a cooking competition and it was festive and fun,” says Daniel Rosenthal. A private photographer is available to take pictures of families or corporate teams.

beautiful scenery.” Another special gathering space is the top floor “Crow’s Nest,” where a once-cramped attic has been transformed into a charming room with bay windows that give a panoramic view of the bay. The wet bar features a kegerator. There’s a screen and cable for watching games. Even better—a porch wraps around the front and side, giving expansive views of the bay and ocean. “It’s a floating porch that’s tied into the walls,” Abreu says. “It was very hard to construct.” Abreu has worked with building contractor Jose Hernandez for 10 years, and also brought in local contractor Ken Sorensen. The team restored many of the original architectural details. All the interior doors were stripped of layers of old paint, their hardware dipped to remove decades of tarnish. Finding just the right tone for the finish and hardware was a labor of love for Abreu’s wife Christine. “She was a real driver of the doors and picking out the finish that would bring out natural warm tones of the wood,” Abreu says. Christine Abreu also chose the white paints throughout the house, decorated in a soothing, natural palette of white, grey and warm wood tones. The formal area of the living room, by the original fireplace with ornate columns, is furnished with a velvet couch and camel hair chairs around an oval marble coffee table, a cozy yet elegant seating area that references the 1920s, Abreu’s favorite era of design. Almost all the furniture (save the large buffet in the foyer) is Restoration Hardware, a brand Abreu loves and uses in all his homes. A window-filled sun porch has a burl wood table, ready for a game of backgammon or cards. It also has a full-on view of the grand Ocean House. You can imagine the family returning to the sun porch for games and conversation, after dinner at Ocean House. Aligning with Ocean House was a natural. “I love the brand,” Abreu says, expressing admiration for what Chuck Royce created: “It’s a marquee resort that’s all about hospitality. That’s what we wanted to create at Intercrest— that same rich experience.” It starts with Ocean House’s dedicated director of residences preparing the cottages for guests. “You don’t feel you’re in a rental,” says Abreu. “You feel like you’re home.”

DOWN TO BUSINESS
Corporate retreats are personalized with a unique spin
A
s founder and CEO of The Outlier Project, Scott MacGregor knew he wanted one thing above all else for his autumn 2023 retreat: “We were looking to put on what we think is hopefully the most unique retreat out there.” He organized attendees such as U.S. Women’s National Team soccer star Joanna Lohman, Olympic cyclist Jeff Spencer, Navy SEAL and bestselling author Jason Redman, National Football League veteran Merril Hoge, Shark Tank alum Megan Reilly, and top U.S. chocolatier Syovata Edari. Then, he considered where to have them come together alongside the exclusive group of 30 guests. “You can’t put on the most unique retreat without an iconic setting,” MacGregor says, “and we thought there’s nothing better than Weekapaug Inn and Ocean House to do that.” MacGregor is just one among numerous corporate clients who have booked memorable events at the properties. Lori Shipley, associate director of group sales, says corporate retreats are very popular at both Weekapaug Inn and Ocean House. They range from large company
buyouts to smaller C-Suite leadership meetings. “The average size for leadership groups is 10 to 15 people,” Shipley says. “These are intimate gatherings of very senior executives requiring complete privacy and five-star service.” Spaces at the resorts range in size and will accommodate everything from these smaller executive meetings to larger strategic planning or brainstorming sessions. To accommodate the many requests for private spaces, the homes in the Ocean House Cottage Collection are also utilized for corporate groups. These elegant, privately owned residences are all within minutes of Ocean House or Weekapaug Inn, many within walking distance. “I may have a group of 12 renting our Sunset Cove cottage, which is 4,600 square feet,” Shipley says. “Some attendees can stay at the cottage if desired, and the rest can enjoy our Ocean House accommodations. The cottage provides ample space for their work sessions in the convenience of a personal home, and they still have access to Ocean House for the resort dining, spa and beach. We can provide all the necessary catering for the group at our
cottages, including breakfast buffets, working lunches and even private dinners.”

Event spaces are as varied as the customized menus. At Ocean House, the largest space is the Seaside Ballroom, which can accommodate up to 300 people, or up to 80 for certain meeting setups. (Videoconferencing is available for team members who cannot be on-site.) The ballroom is adjacent to a terrace with outdoor seating—which can be used in tandem with the ballroom or on its own for events such as welcome dinners, always with wide, scenic views of the croquet lawn and Atlantic Ocean. More intimate meetings at the Ocean House can be organized in the Harbour Room, a boardroom-style space that seats 16 people, or in the Drawing Room, which has breathtaking outdoor views for a classroom set-up of 48 or a u-shape meeting for up to 24. Executive dinners can be staged on the Ocean House’s South Lawn with bistro lighting and farm-style tables amid the hydrangeas. For even more of a wow factor, there’s Théa at Dune Cottage down at the beach. Corporate groups

can enjoy a New England lobster boil on the deck or on the sand, if the goal is to help groups settle in with barefoot elegance. At Weekapaug Inn, the MeetingHouse overlooks the saltwater pond and features hardwood cathedral-type ceilings with a stone fireplace. It is ideal for C-suite meetings with top executives because it’s detached from the inn, allowing for privacy and confidentiality. “I had a group meet in early November in the MeetingHouse a couple of years ago,” Shipley says. “It was still very nice out, nearly 70 degrees. All of the retractable windows were wide open, so it was like they were meeting al fresco, and they were delighted.” Also at Weekapaug Inn is Fenway Cottage, which is adjacent to the pool area. It can be reserved for corporate events or used with the
pool space for receptions and dinners. All venue spaces can be set up in a variety of configurations, and team-building activities can be just as varied. Options include standup paddleboarding, paddleboard yoga, boat tours and excursions, guided kayaking or bicycling, beach walks with a naturalist, birding, seine netting, stargazing with telescopes, triathlons, scavenger hunts, bonfires with s’mores, jewelry-making, wine tasting and more. “We even have a small, working oyster farm on the pond,” Shipley says. “We have had groups put on waders and harvest their own oysters, which later get shucked and roasted on our outdoor fire pit with our executive chef. Guests sip champagne chosen to perfectly complement the oysters. It is a unique and educational experience
that is extremely popular with our corporate groups.” It's those kinds of unusual options that drew MacGregor to book the properties for The Outlier Project event. He and his wife Meg live in Connecticut and enjoy visiting both resorts on their own. “I feel like I’m a Kennedy when I’m at the Weekapaug Inn, and I feel like The Great Gatsby when I’m at Ocean House,” he says—and he appreciates the range of experiences the two locations offer. “The vibes are totally different, but they’re the same in terms of impeccable service and incredible farm-to-table food,” he says. “The people going to this retreat are paying a lot of money to come. We had to be very intentional about the spot that we chose to have the event.”

Childhood Dreams These brides had been planning their weddings since they were little girls, with Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn bringing their visions to life

very family has places they treasure. For brides Sonja Eliason Friedman and Samantha Lynch Bauer, those places were Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn. The venues were a big part of each woman’s childhood. As adults, they couldn’t imagine holding their weddings anywhere else. “That’s not uncommon for us,” says Lauren DiStefano, Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn Director of Catering & Membership Events, who adds that “Sometimes, parents will reach out to discuss options ahead of an engagement announcement.” Sonja and Samantha both say they couldn’t be happier the ways their childhood visions came to life. “They had a list of florists, photographers, and people who had worked at Ocean House and understood the space,” Sonja says. “It was so easy to trust them all with the vision. They were exceptional.”

onja is tough to surprise. So, when Max decided to propose, he had to get creative. “She knows everything going on. She's the planner in our relationship,” he says. “We had decided we wanted to get married, so the proposal was a two-week period where I planned a bunch of romantic gestures, but she didn’t know which day I would propose.” Finally, the big moment happened on the Charles River Esplanade in Boston. Then it was time to select a wedding venue, and Sonja couldn’t think of anywhere as wonderful as her “favorite place in the world.” Sonja’s mother used to take her to Ocean House for girls’ weekends back when Sonja went to boarding school in Connecticut. And Sonja had taken Max there for brunch in 2020. “We weren’t engaged at that point, but we

were definitely heading in that direction, and he knew it was my dream wedding venue,” she says. “As soon as he saw it, he said, ‘This place is so special.’” That first visit was more than a year before Max proposed. “When we were there, I said, ‘Should we just get a venue tour?’” Sonja recalls with a laugh. The couple worked with Ocean House’s Lauren DiStefano to plan their event, which incorporated a rabbi and a conservative ceremony as part of Max’s Jewish faith. It was held on Friday, followed by what DiStefano calls “a super-small, intimate dinner down on the beach. The menu was coastal, Mexican-inspired food. The specialty cocktail that night was the Buttercup, which was named after their dog. It had mezcal and a pineapple jalapeno syrup.
That was a huge hit.” On Saturday, one of Max’s best friends officiated a secular ceremony followed by the couple’s reception on the South Lawn under a tent, which, typically, has its six posts adorned with flags. The bride was surprised again, this time by her mother, who ordered custom flags in the wedding’s bright pink, orange and yellow palette. Two of the flags said “Max,” two said “Sonja,” and the middle ones said “Snax,” the couple’s fun, joint name. At the celebration, they thought the flags were about two-feet-long apiece. But there was one surprise yet to come: “When we actually got them from the tent company, they’re each about eight-feet long,” Sonja says. “We have three of them hanging in our house.”

n February 2021, Samantha was waiting. And waiting. She and Ford had been dating since college. They’d already discussed ring designs. But first, Valentine’s Day went by, and then her birthday passed, and still, Ford hadn’t proposed. Then, the day after her birthday, the couple went to the beach to walk their French bulldog. “There was nobody there in the dead of winter,” she says. “He asked me on the beach, and then we drove over to his parents’ house, and my whole family was there to surprise me.” Watch Hill, Rhode Island, had always been special to Samantha’s family, who had a beach house in Westerly. She’d grown up sailing in the local waters. “We’d do the Ocean House bingo on Monday nights with all the sailing people,” she says. “I think a lot of people expected us to get married in Newport, where

we live, but I always wanted to get married at Weekapaug Inn.” They rented out the Inn for their 200 guests over a long weekend. “My parents had been to a couple weddings there, so they knew what the team was capable of,” she says. “We didn’t look anywhere else.” Samantha says she’d been planning her wedding since she was 15, and the team brought her longtime vision to fruition. Her goal was a classic, timeless theme with greens and whites all around. “They have a little dock there, and the pictures we have from that path, it’s all blooming greenery, which is exactly what I envisioned,” she says. They held their rehearsal dinner in the MeetingHouse on Friday, followed by a welcome party inside the Inn. All day
Saturday, their guests enjoyed boat rides and the beach, followed by a ceremony and cocktail hour on the lawn, and a reception in a tent by the MeetingHouse. “The food was the best part,” she says. “People said it was the best wedding food they’d ever had.” Highlights included mini lobster rolls and crabcakes for the passed hors d’oeuvres, a beef carpaccio appetizer, and an entrée choice of halibut, vegetarian risotto or Ford’s favorite, short ribs. “Being there with everyone for three days, it made it go by slowly, so we could spend time with everyone,” Samantha says. “At a lot of weddings, you don’t even see the bride and groom. Our families got to enjoy themselves. It was a true vacation for them.”
