SCAN TO VISIT US

HOW TO SCAN: OPEN, AIM & TAP

t’s almost impossible to believe that twenty years have passed since 9/11. For some of us, that day still lives within. I went through the day in shock, only later absorbing what had actually happened to our country and to local families. How many of us lost a relative, a friend, or a neighbor? Since then, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York has collected stories, shared resources and served as a gathering place for an annual memorial tribute to the people lost at the World Trade Center, at the Pentagon and on Flight 93. Everyone who experienced that day will pass this year’s anniversary in his or her own way—some may turn inward, while others will reach out. I wanted to let you know about the resources at 911memorial.org. Among the planned events, I found out about this year’s Tribute in Light—the twin blue lights beamed some four miles high and seen for nearly sixty miles. They will be joined citywide, with lights at cultural institutions, corporate buildings and landmarks as a statement of unity. This could be an especially difficult anniversary for some Stamford families. We hope it passes with them knowing they are supported and in our thoughts. And for those too young to remember that day, this is a chance to ask questions about what happened and what it means to those you know. I am thinking about the teens featured in the story “Teens to Watch” in this issue. On that day, they were not even born yet. They have heard the stories and perhaps even seen a memorial about 9/11, but it seems hard to explain how it changed our country.

stamfordmag.com

14

As a way to relate, they have the experience of a pandemic. So when I talked to them about their teenage years, I asked specifically about how Covid has changed them. How does it make things challenging, and did any lessons come from it? Remarkably, they acknowledge what others have been through; comment on their gratitude for what they have, despite sacrifices; and express an awareness of their own deepened resiliency. Though social distancing physically separated them as individuals, they bonded as a generation because of their experiences during these unusual high school years. I find their school accomplishments as impressive and inspiring as this attitude. I hope you do, too. Inside, you’ll also find ideas for enjoying life here, such as gatherings with friends and family or maybe even starting a new business (or at least checking it out). You also can read up on quick escapes to simply get away from the everyday. For example, we head up the coastline to waterside retreats that can clear one’s head and celebrate the joys of life. Of course, we all can agree that the best comfort is found when we return to the place we love the most: home. On this 9/11, I will head to my favorite quiet spot along our coastline to take in the NYC skyline in the distance, and sense it as closer than usual.

TEACHING STUDENTS THROUGH THE PANDEMIC b y s c o t t t h o m a s

onna Kaiser captured a pair of noteworthy teaching honors this year. The Stamford High School science teacher was named the city’s Teacher of the Year, and Manhattanville College’s School of Education awarded her its Valiant Educator Award. Kaiser deserves community plaudits, as do all her teaching peers for the way in which they navigated their classrooms and careers in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Everybody made adjustments during the pandemic, but teachers steered through pandemic-related complexities with aplomb. For one, they needed to make drastic changes in the way they taught their students. But they also needed to work with the district to figure out how to best handle the new challenges, and had to work with some students who did not have the technological resources and some who did not know how to use them. While debate centered around parents and school leadership between remote and in-person instruction, teachers rode a roller-coaster that lurched awkwardly around a track that was not completely designed with a map. “Last March, when teaching went full remote, it was sudden and unexpected, so I don’t think all teachers were equipped, technology-wise, to

above: Teacher of the Year, Donna Kaiser

be able to pivot to a full remote environment,’’ Kaiser said. “This included things as simple as having reliable high-speed internet service, a dedicated desk area and camera. It was also quite an adjustment to go from being in a classroom with students all day to sitting in one place in front of a computer for hours and hours.”

Remote instruction was only the first hurdle. Kaiser said the 2020–21 school year schedule was “unpredictable.” Hybrid learning, live streaming and, finally, a return to in-person instruction and teaching with masks in place for the final few months required swift transitions. “Not only did the teachers have to change their delivery methods,

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021 STAMFORD

17

such as paper tests to online tests, and learn new skills, the school also had to go through some infrastructure upgrades to enable these new modes,’’ Kaiser said. She found the mask-wearing requirement troublesome. “I found myself running out of voice halfway through the day,’’ she said. “My husband provided a small wireless clip-on microphone and an amplifier so that I didn’t have to shout.” Science teachers such as Kaiser found it especially difficult due to the hands-on lab exercises that are an important part of the curriculum. “You could only do them if you had enough equipment,’’ Kaiser said. She included more interactive projects and developed different methods to keep students engaged. She conducted one experiment in the backyard of her home while students watched, and then did a lab based on the data. With pandemic restrictions easing, nearly all students will return to the classroom in the fall. Kaiser said, however, that teaching strategies that evolved during the pandemic will remain in place. “I’m hoping we can take the positives we learned and keep them in teaching,’’ she said. “I think technology should be part of the curriculum going forward. I don’t think we should ever try to go back. We should always be in the present and keep moving forward.”

anifest is one of those words buzzing around in our modern-day lexicon. We manifest good relationships, good careers, answers to life’s big questions, you name it. Oftentimes, the things we manifest stem from the core values for which we stand. Passion, charity, boldness—these ideals are best exemplified by Stamford athletes Alex Joseph, Desmond K. XenHouse, a new fitness space in Harbor Point, and it isn’t your average gym. Using their collective knowledge and experience in the professional sports world, Alex, Desmond and Ross cater to those looking to level up not only their bodies, but also their overall well-being. with an interest in general fitness, both in person and virtually, as well as sports-specified training tailored to unique sports needs, special-needs training for those with limitations and wanting to push the boundaries of what is possible, and recovery sessions for those dealing with injuries, aches and pains. According to one of its founders, Alex Joseph, the goal is simple: “XenHouse offers unique training that feeds one’s mind, body and soul. We prepare those willing to work for change to hold a high standard. Fitness is a pivotal part of our lives at XenHouse; we physically challenge you while building your mental/emotional focus through tough exercises.” Ready to make a change, head to toe? constructing one in Danbury. Saffan recommended Bridgeport instead. And he knew just the place: Harbor Yard, home of the Bluefish. He could see the stadium from his office next door at the Webster Bank Arena, where he was the president of the Sound Tigers minor league hockey team. The stadium had long-struggled to make a profit, and existing zoning meant that neighborhood opposition was unlikely. Plus, the location was perfect for a concert venue: an easy walk from the train station, a minute from I-95, a quick stroll to the Port Jefferson ferry, and close to food and drink in the Park City. Many meetings with city groups, shipping delays, and a pandemic later, the pair’s vision was finally realized. More than two dozen concerts, including New Canaan crooner Harry Connick Jr. to rapper Rod Wave to Grammywinning rockers Greta Van Fleet, will take place from opening through October. In between, the amphitheater hosts cider fests, beer fests and more. The amphitheater opens three hours prior to showtime, giving fans plenty of time to eat, drink and gather. Local fare, including

he former Bluefish baseball stadium in Bridgeport is rocking a $25 million makeover, replete with Gehry-esque flying steel masts around a big-top torch. It’s home of the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater now, an outdoor music venue with 5,700 seats, local food and drink, and enough luxury to lure boaters back to shore by showtime. A tensile membrane roof made of fiberglass and Teflon stretches across the site, protecting 92 percent of concert-goers—as well as 23-foot-high video boards and a state-of-the-art German sound system—from the elements. Marble lines bathroom walls and sinks, live orchids ring restroom entrances, French glass from St. Gobain shimmers under lights imported from Milan. “It’s an architectural marvel,” says Attorney Howard Saffan, of Weston, the amphitheater’s developer, builder and operator. Eight years ago, during one of their monthly lunches, Saffan and veteran concert-promoter Jim Koplik, of Stamford, agreed that Fairfield County could really use a new amphitheater. As it happens, entertainment company Live Nation was considering

pizza from Pepe’s, barbecue from Hoodoo Brown, seafood from Knot Norm’s, ice cream from Timothy’s, and craft beer from Two Roads and Blue Point, fills concession stands. Ten bartenders work the granite-wrapped dugouts on the concert floor. Concierges pour Dom Perignon in the luxury suites. Carving stations line the Harbor Club. “Everything is catered to knowing who our clientele is,” Saffan says. “People in Fairfield County want quality and service, whether that’s food, service, the band or the venue.” Bands get the star treatment at the amphitheater, too, with their own personal chef (Eric Fellito, of Tasty Yolk and The Chelsea fame), six dressing rooms, massage rooms, a s’mores bar at the outdoor fireplace, video and pinball room and more. Even the roadies get TLC. Saffan and Koplik added gleaming showers and washers and dryers for the road crew, as well as prime parking out back with water and power for eight tour buses. Talent, crew and operating staff can all eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together, served by a custom kitchen. The goal, says Saffan, is to make everybody happy to come back next time.

his September SoundWaters will announce the winners of its one-of-a-kind photo contest: “Long Island Sound: It Makes Me Happy.” It showcases winners who captured that nautical feeling of summer best, with proceeds to enter the contest benefitting SoundWaters’ year-round conservation and educational initiatives. With its new Harbor Center, a research-and-education facility set to launch in Boccuzzi Park in 2022, SoundWaters will continue its twenty-five-year commitment to safeguarding our water and building eco-friendly relationships with the community at large. “We love to see what other artists are creating—especially in our own backyard,” says Garvin Burke, contest judge and senior art director of Stamford magazine. When helping to select winners for Best in Show, Winner-Adult and Winner-Youth categories, he looked for: an unexpected narrative or uncommon site/ subject matter; well-exposed photo with a command of depth of field; and an evocative mood or feeling. Locals also voted for a People’s Choice winner. CUTTING-EDGE RESEARCH BRINGS HOPE TO FAMILIES MANAGING ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE

M

ost of us probably associate Alzheimer’s disease with memory loss and possibly confusion and anger. But less common symptoms such as the loss of spatial reasoning—the inability to recognize or find familiar objects that are in plain sight—can also signal the presence of the disease and its variants. “That’s when you’ve lived in the same house for 30 years but suddenly, you’re

confusing which light switch does what,” says Dr. Carolyn Fredericks, M.D., assistant professor of neurology at Yale. “Or you look in the fridge for the orange juice, and even though it’s right in front of you, you can’t pick it out from the crowd of other objects.” Dr. Fredericks has a special interest in looking at the less-common types of Alzheimer’s, where the prominent signs may be mistaken for dementia or may lie in stamfordmag.com

“completely different realms of thinking,” she says. The danger is that they are masking the onset of the fatal disease, delaying diagnosis and treatment. She and her colleagues in the Fredericks Lab, a research facility on the Yale University campus, are using advanced neuroimaging technology to understand how variant strains of Alzheimer’s spreads across networks in the brain.

FIVE EARLY SIGNS Some memory loss can be normal as we age. But here are some of the red flags when Alzheimer’s might be suspected

Disruptive memory loss—when daily life or tasks are too tough to handle because you consistently forget recently learned information.

Challenges in planning or problem solving—you take much longer to complete a task that you’ve done before or can’t keep track of your monthly bills.

Difficulty completing familiar tasks—you have trouble driving to a local grocery store and remembering where it is.

Confused about time or place— forgetting where you are or how you got there.

New problems with words in speaking or writing—repeating the same phrase over and over or struggling with vocabulary. Source: Alzheimer’s Association

The hope is that their work will result in earlier identification of the illness, more precise monitoring for future drug studies, and identification of targets for direct treatments particularly for patients with atypical variants of Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, in her clinical practice, Dr. Fredericks sees patients with a variety of cognitive and behavioral issues and concerns. During an initial visit, Dr. Fredericks asks detailed questions around a patient’s medical history and does cognitive testing to test memory, language, attention, and spatial functions. She also conducts a neurological exam that checks a range of abilities, including a patient’s motor system, reflexes, and coordination. “I get a deep satisfaction from walking through the treatment process with a family, offering resources and medications that can help the patient feel better, even though it won’t make the illness go away,” she says. “Of course, I love it when I’m able to reverse stamfordmag.com

a process for someone. Sometimes, we will learn that a patient’s thyroid is not working well or that they have an autoimmune condition we can treat. Those kinds of catches are amazing to be a part of.” The Connecticut resident graduated from Brown with a BA in the Classics and a BS in Neuroscience before going on to the Stanford University School of Medicine. In April, Dr. Fredericks was named a Henry F. McCance Yale Scholar, recognizing her as an outstanding young faculty member, granting her funding for research. She also recieved a $175,000 research grant from the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s and its variants do more harm than rob memory or spatial reasoning. They are also usually fatal. Now, death rates from the progressive disease, for which there is no cure, are on the rise: something Fredericks and others are working to stem. “Research is the path forward with this disease,” says Ginny Hanbridge, Executive Director of the Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. “We are so honored and proud to have so many dedicated scientists in Connecticut, including Dr. Fredericks, working to get us closer to new treatments and hopefully a cure for this disease.” Alzheimer's Association is the largest nonprofit funding research in the world, currently providing $235 million to more than 650 active research projects in 39 countries, including $2 million in research in Connecticut.

The WHALER’S INN is a perfect mix of quaint charm and modern luxe

T

he Whaler’s Inn, a historic hotel at the center of downtown Mystic, has been a site for New England hospitality for over a century. The original building housed several businesses in the early 1900s, including a Ford Model-T showroom. A renovation over the last five years, though, breathes new life into it. Now, the hotel is the perfect mix of old and new school, encapsulating the chic lifestyle of the Connecticut shoreline while still nodding to its nautical past. One thing the Whaler’s Inn has preserved well is its small-town feel. “Hospitality has become very automated. You can get your keys sent to your phone and order room service from your television,” says Amanda Arling, president. “We want this to be the opposite of that. We want everyone to feel like family and that this inn is an

extension of their home.” The lobby is sundrenched and cozy, and outfitted with furniture that makes it feel more living room than lobby. Books, potted plants and coastal knickknacks line the shelves and guests lounge out front on Adirondack chairs facing the heart of downtown. The Whaler’s Inn’s greatest gem is The Shipwright’s Daughter, a restaurant that opened mid-pandemic. Executive Chef David Standridge comes from a rich culinary past in New York City, earning two Michelin stars and other accolades. “He is an artist,” says Amanda. “He imagines flavor profiles in his head and makes them come to life.” His execution is impressive. Each dish is multidimensional, melding opposite flavors and textures in a way that makes eating them feel more like a journey than a meal. In one

dish, crunch is met with chew, spice with cool, and salt with sweet, leaving every bite just slightly, and delightfully, different than the last. The menu is seasonal and ever changing with a heavy focus on ingredients from local waters and farms. “He doesn’t cut corners,” says Amanda. “If it’s not sourced locally or in season, you won’t find it on the menu. His commitment to that is incredible.” Less than a two-hour drive away from the busy roads and full agendas for life in Fairfield County, the Whaler’s Inn is a worthy destination for a weekend getaway. It promises the curated, heart-fueled hospitality of a small bed-and-breakfast with the luxury of sophisticated amenities and experiences, and keeps its word.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

OCEAN HOUSE BRINGS TODAY'S LUXURY AND HISTORIC HOSPITALITY TO RHODE ISLAND

O

pened in 1868, on the heels of the Civil War, Ocean House sits on 13 acres of breathtaking oceanfront landscape overlooking a 650-foot private white-sand beach in Watch Hill Road Island. Most recognizable for its inviting butter-hued façade, it has long served as a luxurious respite for distinguished guests. After 135 years in business, the property was closed in 2003 and considered impossible to repair. Thankfully, local residents Charles Royce (a renowned mutual fund manager) and his wife, Deborah (an actress, story editor and author), stepped in to save the day, creating a replicate structure of the original exterior. Today, the new resort is one of the most spectacular places I’ve ever been, which I do not say lightly after twenty-plus years of travel writing. Everything from the attention to detail, the white-glove service and the mouth-watering cuisine to the lavish rooms, stunning grounds and the 5,000 salvageable artifacts and furnishings tenderly harvested from the primary historic interior will make your visit unforgettable.

STAY The forty-nine guestrooms and twenty signature suites, inspired by the glorious oceanfront scenery, are skillfully appointed with turn-of-the-twentieth-century décor. Custom wooden furnishings, a subdued color palette, and early New England artwork, along with plenty of high-tech touches ensure that accommodations appeal to a wide variety of tastes. I had the truly distinctive experience of staying in the Tower Suite with unrivaled views of the Atlantic, Napatree Point, Stonington and Watch Hill. Decorated by Greenwich-based designer Cindy Rinfret, the space is dressed in bright blues and gentle creams, with a nautical theme. A welcoming foyer, master suite and powder room reside on the first level. I loved the beach stone floor and a tea-for-two tub in the master bathroom! There’s also an adjoining guest room that may be reserved. On the second floor, there’s a living area with floor-toceiling fir paneling that will make you feel like you’re on a yacht at sea, in addition to a slate fireplace, built-in bookshelves, and window seats perfect for curling up with a great book. The adjoining dining area has a custom-built

banquette with a roof deck, and there’s also a modern kitchen with state-of-the-art appliances and granite countertops. And that’s not all! A regal wooden staircase leads up and away to the Crow’s Nest—a intimate den with a daybed and full bath. All in all, the suite encompasses 2,400 square feet, sleeps five and entertains ten to twenty. PAMPER Situated high on the bluffs of Watch Hill, looking out on the Atlantic Ocean, the 12,000-square-foot OH! Spa boasts rejuvenating treatments and products that foster indulgence and relaxation. It’s the only Forbes Five-Star spa in Rhode Island and one of fifty-six destination spas in the world to achieve the five-star rating. Begin your journey with a glass of their signature fruit-infused water in the serene waiting area before spoiling yourself with one of the many services available, including body treatments, skin care and massages. I opted for the Your Way Custom massage, which was tailored to my preferences and divinely soothing. CUISINE With Executive Chef Matt Voskuil at the helm of a supremely talented culinary team, dining options abound at Ocean House—all with elevated traditional Rhode Island flavors. Combining fresh local ingredients, superlative service, and a farm-to-table philosophy, prepare to have your taste buds tantalized. At COAST restaurant, the seasonal offerings change nightly and guests (ages eight and up) can choose from a prix-fixe four-course savory or vegetarian degustation menu with an optional cheese course. My favorites included the Maine Peekytoe Crab with persimmon, radish, sea bean and kaffir lime and the Royalton Farms Wagyu New York Strip with short rib, baby carrot, bone marrow, and buckwheat gnocchi. There’s also The Bistro, for a more casual dining experience, available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the members-only Club Room and Club Terrace, which feature traditional brasserie fare with a New England twist. I couldn’t resist the

housemade Pappardelle with lobster, truffle butter and egg yolk. But the pièce de résistance was undoubtedly the Chocolate PB & J with banana, peanut butter and raspberry for dessert. Visit Fondue Village, a unique and cozy private dining venue serving breakfast, afternoon crêpe service, and four-course lunches and dinners with Alpine delicacies and Veuve Clicquot champagnes. Each vintage ski gondola (either for up to four or six guests) has been restored and equipped with warm woods, fine Alpine textiles, chandeliers and imported Swiss and Austrian glassware and china. Whether for a romantic couple’s dinner or a gathering of friends, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss. During the summer, delight in the panoramic view and calming sea breeze at one of three al fresco restaurants. Check out The Verandah for fresh-caught local seafood, Dune Cottage for a Mediterranean-style meal, and the Seaside Terrace for delicious breakfast and lunch provisions. On select Friday evenings, hit the private beach for a sunset lobster boil. EXPERIENCE Enjoy wine and culinary classes inspired by the season. Booked Solid What better way to fall into fall than with an FBI informant, a #childfree social media influencer, a body swap and a “haunted” house? These FOUR MUST-READS will make that transition out of summer just a little bit more fun. by emily liebert

INSTAMOM BY CHANTEL GUERTIN

THE SEVEN DAY SWITCH BY KELLY HARMS

THE THERAPIST BY B. A. PARIS

Set in post-war New York City, this historical fiction masterpiece follows Katharina Edgeworth’s journey from her job as a translator at the United Nations to her rank as an informant for the FBI. A born and bred New Yorker, Katharina’s Fifth Avenue address, party invitations to the Plaza, two sons and ideal husband make her life appear picture perfect. Yet her American dream is actually a nightmare, and she’s desperate to free herself from the limitations of domesticity. So when a man from her past becomes a high-level Soviet spy and no one can infiltrate his circle, the FBI asks Katharina to be an informant, and she jumps at the opportunity. Unfortunately, as she dives deeper into her new covert existence, her loved ones begin to lose their covers and their lives, and Katharina’s secret ultimately threatens to ruin her. If you’re into fast-paced classic spy thrillers, with plenty of twists and turns, this one’s for you.

Who doesn’t love a smart, sexy, funny rom-com? From bestselling author, beauty expert and TV personality Chantel Guertin comes the story of Kit Kidding, a #childfree forever influencer whose golden rule is: Know your niche. And Kit’s brand revolves around skillfully curated posts about her fun, fabulous, child-free life, which she wholeheartedly believes in. Enter Will MacGregor—a hot, single dad—whose parental status might just be a #dealbreaker for Kit, especially since he’s antisocial media. On the heels of their one-night stand, she vows to move on. But when Will and Kit are thrown together on an Instagram campaign, Kit finds it increasingly more difficult to resist both Will and his clever, eight-year-old daughter, Addie. The question is: Which life will make her truly happy? #readitandsee

Two very distinctive moms and one crazy week are the recipe for this hilarious novel from bestselling author Kelly Harms. Celeste Mason is the supermom other mothers love to hate. Everything is organic, her home is spotless, she volunteers (and wins awards for it), and she’s still able to savor a glass of wine at the end of the day. Then there’s Celeste’s neighbor Wendy Charles, a hyper-careerfocused productivity consultant, columnist and speaker who doesn’t approve of anything Celeste stands for, and she’s unapologetic about her minute-byminute work schedule, which she executes with ease. So what happens when these two polar opposites drink too much sangria at their neighborhood potluck and wake up the next day in each other’s bodies? Everything they thought they knew about themselves and each other comes into question. And they may just find out that they’re not so different after all.

From the multimillion-copy New York Times bestselling author B. A. Paris, this spellbinding tale of psychological suspense follows Alice and Leo, as they move into a freshly revamped house in The Circle, a swanky gated community in London with an interesting cast of characters. Unfortunately, not only do their neighbors hold secrets, but so does their new home. While Alice is busy making friends with her fellow residents, she discovers the shocking truth about her house and forges a strong connection with Nina, the therapist who lived there prior. Of course, Nina also happens to be the name of Alice’s beloved and deceased sister. As a result, Alice becomes infatuated with uncovering what transpired with Nina two years earlier. Only she can’t seem to get anyone to talk about it. And she soon realizes that everything is definitely not as perfect as it seems. CONTRIBUTED

College Board. Tack on another $13,000 or so for room and board at either option. Covid-19 has served as a reckoning for soaring school costs, says David Tuttle, partner and portfolio manager at Crestwood Advisors in Darien. During the pandemic, as schools offered courses virtually, many families wondered, “Why can’t people just learn online? Why do you need to go to college?” Tuttle says. Schools took note. Though tuition edged up for the academic year 2020-2021, it did so at historically low levels. Still, the price tag remains out of reach for many Fairfield County families. “The profile of Fairfield County is that all the families can afford to self-pay,” Tuttle says. “The reality is that there are kids even in Darien, New Canaan and Greenwich that’s not the case for. They have a tremendous burden and pressure to follow the normal path of going to college.” His advice: Start saving early. “When kids are born, we’re encouraging parents to set up

529 plans.” Designed specifically for education, 529s let you invest in mutual funds, ETFs and the like, but your investments grow tax-free, so long as you use the proceeds for approved education expenses, such as tuition, books, room and board. Unlike many other tax-saving investments, 529s don’t come with income constraints. Connecticut’s 529 plan, the Connecticut Higher Education Trust (CHET), is more attractive than ever, says Tuttle. Last December, the state selected Fidelity to administer it, lowering fees and expanding investment options. Connecticut parents can contribute up to $10,000 per year to CHET; earnings grow free of federal and state taxes. “You can contribute $50,000 today, pay your tuition tomorrow, and take $10,000 each year for five years,” he says. “I have had clients maximize the tax benefit in-state to get the maximum, and then invest outside.” If the designated beneficiary decides to forgo college, you can

transfer the account without penalty to another family member —even yourself—so long as it’s used for qualified education expenses. Families don’t need a lot of money to set up a college fund. Tuttle’s dad and grandfather each invested $500 into a Putnam Growth Fund when Tuttle was born, then started showing him the balance when he was ten years old and had his first job cutting lawns. “This money tripled in ten or twelve years, and here I was cutting lawns.” As soon as your child is eligible, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which determines whether you qualify for government aid. Complete it even if you won’t qualify for need-based aid. Many schools grant merit-aid, based on grades, test scores or talents in things like sports, music and the arts. The average award for undergraduates in 2019-2020 was $14,940, according to the College Board. Without completing the FAFSA, you won’t get anything.

If you will need more aid than offered, write an email of appeal to the school financial aid office, outlining factors like reduced salary at work, a lay-off, a sibling attending graduate school or a bigger package from a comparable school. Get your appeal in early, Tuttle says. When schools exhaust their aid resources, there’s not much they can do for you. Also, Tuttle advises some of Fairfield County’s wealthiest families, but he also mentors kids who live in subsidized housing in Darien. “There’s an opportunity for kids with drive to find a way to get to the finish line and pay little or nothing,” he says. “There are non-traditional paths that are a jungle gym. It requires real planning.” Attending two years of Norwalk Community College or Housatonic Community College, for example, can shave tens of thousands of dollars off of a four-year college tab. The same holds for dozens of online, accredited schools. To lower the cost even further, get a job at Chipotle, Starbucks, Walmart or any number of other employers that pay or reimburse for college, even for part-time employees.

These teens refuse to let Covid define their classes, competitions, college plans or world of interests

T

eenagers have a reputation for not freely sharing what’s going on in their lives—so we sat down and simply asked Stamford students questions about experiences at school, their accomplishments, and what they are genuinely passionate about. Their answers reveal the complexity of their days—especially because of Covid—and the many demands on them, from getting good grades to volunteering. Story after story is an eye-opener about how capable and, actually, how very remarkable they are academically, athletically, artistically and in spirit. They make Stamford proud. by diane semb rot

BENJAMIN BURKE O'BRIEN the consequences for doing so were much higher than our generation could ever imagine. No one cares more about those who are important to her than my grandmother—something I can also learn a great deal from.”

Who motivates you? “One person who never ceases to motivate me is my grandmother, Beverlee. She grew up the daughter of two Ukranian Jewish immigrants in the Bronx and has had to fight harder than anyone I know for almost everything she ever had. At the age of ten she almost died from a rare medical condition. After doctors saved her life with weeks to spare, she knew she wanted to dedicate her life to helping others in the same way. Too poor to go to medical school and be a doctor, she became a nurse, married young, and had my mother and uncle. In the 1970s she came out as a lesbian and got a divorce from my grandfather. Once again, my grandmother was loud and proud about who she is, and fought hard for LGBT rights and equality, at a time when

What is your proudest accomplishment? “My proudest accomplishment was being able to turn around my high school experience after my sophomore year. As an underclassman, I was unengaged and far from thriving at GFA. As I overcame some personal challenges and matured with age, I started to come out of my shell and, ultimately, decided to run for junior class president—and won. This marked a major turning point for me. Beginning with junior

Do you have a favorite subject? “History has long been my favorite subject. It utilizes skills that are strengths of mine—reading and writing—in a context that has always interested me. I believe a lot of people think of history as ‘dead’ or set in stone, as it deals with past events that, by definition, have already occurred. But, really, history is quite dynamic and is constantly evolving, with the discovery of new information and the taking of different perspectives (historiography) ever complicating our understanding of these past events. That’s what I love so much about history; it was something that I got to see in motion through my yearlong, primary sourcebased research project on the Revolutionary War in Fairfield.”

year, I approached everything I did with greater focus, effort and determination, and it was from there that I was able to grow into who I am today.” What did you like about Greens Farms Academy? “I think GFA has a faculty that truly values genuine academic interest from its student body. They want students to take control over what and how they learn because they know the best work comes from a student who is actually interested in studying the thing they’re studying.” Anything good come from the pandemic experience? “I believe everyone learned a lesson in what it’s like to have long-term planning go out the window overnight when the pandemic hit the Northeast so suddenly last March, whether it was travels, summer activities, high school experiences like prom, graduation, etc. However, this taught us how to adapt, something we can all benefit from. I believe Covid also helped build confidence for many people. Staying true to our strengths was important in a time when there was so much uncertainty.”

QUICK TAKES Advice to high school freshmen: “It's never too late to reinvent yourself.” Person most want to meet: “The late Anthony Bourdain.” If I could do one thing better, it would be: “Organization.” Dream destination: “Machu Picchu.” College aspiration: “To stay true to the traits that have led me to the successes I have seen thus far, including hard work and proactive self-advocacy.”

ith high honors and receiving Headmaster’s Award of Distinction, one might think Stamford resident Benjamin O’Brien was doing nothing but hitting the books at Greens Farms Academy. But the truth is, he did much more—including varsity cross country, varsity Golf, Jewish Students Association, Teen Awareness and Conversational Opportunities peer counselor, junior class president, and even a Life Guard at Stamford Yacht Club. He even nabbed an internship with Congressman Jim Himes. He comes across as a confident, natural leader who is not afraid to take charge of a situation, whether that’s inside or outside of school. That comes with a talkative and active streak and being consistently a hard worker. When interested in a topic, from Korean and Japanese cooking to Colonial history of Fairfield County, he jumps in deep.

AIYANNA OJUKWU Greenwich Academy

GABRIELLA TOTH OF VENTURE PHOTOGRAPHY

S

tamford’s Aiyanna Ojukwu is a senior at Greenwich Academy. Aiyanna takes primarily AP and Honors classes. She even took a precalculus class during the summer of 2020 so she could take AP Calculus BC during her junior year. Now she is taking a Stanford University math course, which is offered only to her school’s very best math students. She has demonstrated her math skills with a perfect score on SAT math. Overall, she has a near perfect SAT score and has earned the AP Scholar Award. Aiyanna also maintains a rigorous dance schedule. Having attended Alvin Ailey School of Dance in New York City since she was just five years old, she has traveled to Midtown Manhattan four days weekly throughout high school to train. During the pandemic, Aiyanna was able to remain actively involved with the dance school and adapt to a combination of virtual and in-studio classes. She also joined Greenwich Academy’s Dance Corps. Her love for dance and other performing arts is evident in how she spends her summers. Each summer, Aiyanna has attended dance intensives at The Ailey School, Dance Theater of Harlem, Harlem School of the Arts, American Academy of Ballet and American Ballet Theater. She also attended jazz camp and musical theater camp at Harlem

School of the Arts. At Greenwich Academy she has been a member of the track team and junior varsity volleyball team. She also served on her school’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Board her sophomore and junior year, attending weekly meetings. Aiyanna is described as a natural facilitator of complex discussions—such as religion, diversity, beauty standards and microaggressions—she helped lead monthly gatherings and asked thought-provoking questions while also listening carefully.

What is one of your successes? “Recently, I ran for president of the school. And won! To be honest, I was nervous while campaigning and writing my speech, but I think something that helped me succeed was transforming that nervous energy into excitement for the role and its responsibilities. I’m not naturally a shy person but having the whole school watch me run was a little bit scary. In times when I would get butterflies, asking for help from my friends really helped. When making posters, I knew I could call on my friends to help make my ideas a reality. They were also there to give honest and helpful criticism for my speech, so I felt prepared.” Who motivates you? “My dance teachers inspire me. I love it when they tell stories about how they worked hard to make it in such a competitive field. I might not want to become a professional dancer, but their passion reminds me how important it is to go after the things you want and also to work hard to make sure that there is a path for more people to succeed after you. Teachers in my opinion do more than just teach dance, they also find a way to weave life lessons into their class. Through dance, I’ve learned responsibility, dedication, respectfulness, self-respect and more. I am forever thankful for those teachers who have pushed me to become a better person.”

QUICK TAKES Superpower pick: “Invisibility. I gain a lot of inspiration from people-watching.” Favorite hobby: “Crocheting.” Favorite extracurricular: “Writing for Daedalus, our literary magazine, which pairs students’ creative writing with various visual-art submissions. I like writing poems for Daedalus because it is a way to express myself. This year, I‘ve had the pleasure of attending Daedalus club meetings where we read all of the submissions and voted on our favorite pieces. I like observing how students extract different meanings from the same poem or short story. Those moments encourage me to see things from someone else’s perspective and to appreciate the complexity of art.”

Any advice for freshmen? “I would tell an incoming freshman to not buy into the idea that high schoolers should limit their creativity to fit in. I think coming into a new environment it can be easy to sacrifice your individuality in hopes of maybe making more friends or not seeming ‘weird.’ I’ve noticed that the people at my school who are admired the most by students and faculty alike are the ones who unashamedly incorporate their ‘quirks’ into their school lives. Whether that’s putting on outfits you’ve been too shy to wear, experimenting with hairstyles/colors that you’ve been unsure about, or showing off hobbies/talents that you didn’t think people would like, at the end of the day just do it. Everyone loves variety and the only person that could actually get in the way of self-expression is you.” What do you like about school? “Something that I really like about my high school is how warm the people are. I feel like Greenwich Academy is the type of place where you can expect people to smile in the hallways and to be encouraging whether you know them or not. We also have so many activities that I have fallen in love with, such as different sports, performing arts, STEM and research opportunities.”

the academic demands will be commensurate with athletic ones.” How did Covid impact you? “When Covid hit, I was only a few days out from a week of training over spring break. Not only was this canceled, but so was the rest of in-person learning and sports seasons, along with the national tournaments for which I had qualified. I had to get creative to find ways to get college coaches to take notice.”

Brunswick

A

What are your hopes from Yale? “I am most excited to explore topics that I didn’t have a chance to study at Brunswick. It feels like every day I hear or read Yale mentioned in the news for cutting-edge scientific research, for scholarships in the drama department or about a worldrenowned scholar opining on an important topic, and I am determined to immerse myself in its vibrant intellectual community.”

Do you have a favorite class? “Before seventh grade, I signed up for a Brunswick course called ‘Early Morning Latin.’ I’ve always enjoyed languages and had success with Spanish up until that point, and I wanted to explore something different. I did not want to stop taking Spanish, so in order to do both, my dad would make the forty-minute drive to get me to school by 7 a.m. twice a week to learn Latin. There were about ten kids on the first day, but by the end of eighth grade, the pack had whittled down to just me and one other student. I loved it and have enjoyed Classics ever since.”

different subjects throughout high school, like AP U.S. Government, AP Economics, and International Relations, but earning my Classics Diploma with Latin and Greek, through the help of many wonderful teachers, Dr. Salazar, Dr. Ocana, and Dr. Sears at Brunswick, was an unforgettable aspect of my high school education.” What is a challenge you’ve faced? “Balancing the demanding academics at a place like Brunswick, extracurricular activities such as Neighbor to Neighbor, the training required of a varsity athlete and competing outside of school at tournaments throughout the year is difficult to juggle, especially when wanting to also spend as much quality time as possible with friends and family, especially my sister. Unlike players who are home-schooled or training at elite tennis academies where academics can be scheduled around training and tournaments, I had to miss many classes to participate in USTA tournaments. However, with the incredible support of my family, coaches and the Brunswick faculty, I learned to manage my time and find the right balance, which I think will help me at a university like Yale, where

How did your interest grow? “When high school hit, I was finally able to take Latin as a regular course, and so I took Latin and Spanish freshman year. I enjoyed the material so much—the new alphabet, vocabulary, all of the grammatical tendencies, differing sentence structures—it made me want to pursue it further and complement it with Classical Greek. Unfortunately, I could not fit in Spanish along with Latin and Greek throughout high school, so after freshman year I chose to devote my language studies to just the Classics. I enjoyed many

What defines your generation? “Resilience. So many have faced incredible loss or struggles this year. They have lost family members; they have lost financial security; their entire seasons have been canceled; they have had remote school. Even when we were remote learning, I knew my classmates would not let this virus define our senior year. We tried to make it about the things we could still do and not about what we couldn’t. A lot of us used this as an opportunity to act on behalf of others, to engage more in broader societal issues, to connect more meaningfully with one another.”

QUICK TAKES Being a teen in Stamford: “Awesome. I have had the good fortune of attending school in Greenwich and living in Stamford. Stamford has amazing youth sports programs. Some of my closest friends are from those programs.” Most like to meet: “Walt Disney. Oh the magic he’s given to millions.” My motto: “You’re not defined by your mistakes—they show you who you’re not.” The superpower I’d pick: “Immortality.”

idan Reilly was still in middle school when he made the varsity tennis team at the Upper School of Brunswick School. The Stamford resident started on the team as No. 6. In tenth grade, his team elected him as MVP during the year they won the NESCAC Championship. As a junior, he decided to forgo varsity basketball to focus on tennis. He entered high-level UTR tournaments that were hosted by Ivy League schools and won several matches, proving that he could compete at the collegiate level. He’s just that good. In fact, today he is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 3 in New England. Because of Covid, the championships were canceled. He wins, also, because this fall, he plays for Yale, a Division 1 team. The university was likely impressed by his academic drive, too. He earned a Classics Diploma, having studied the cultural and historical roots of Western civilization, AP Latin and Classical Greek. Aidan has attended Brunswick since pre-k and has close connections with faculty mentors and coaches and good friendships. “I feel fortunate to have gone to a school that has a motto—Courage, Honor, Truth—that stands for something and tries to instill those values into their students,” he says. For example, he runs clinics for kids at Solaris, where he received training, and tutored at Waterside School in Stamford.

subsequently, emulating their styles in my own work. In doing so, I was able to further discover my own identity, understand how to articulate my own experiences and expression through language and challenge the often male and Eurocentric canon of poetic form. Overall, I consider finalizing a chapbook a success because I felt that I grew not only as a poet, but also as a person, and I was also able to gain so much guidance from a person that I greatly look up to.”

and human nature, and my English classes have fostered my growth in doing so. My favorite class this year was Econ and Politics because it spoke to another passion of mine, which is social advocacy. I find the process of applying the concept of intersectionality to modern issues in society regarding socioeconomic disparities really intriguing and motivating in terms of trying to figure solutions in pursuing equity and equality.” Share one of your recent successes? “A personal success for me was completing my first chapbook as part of an independent study, which I did with my former English teacher and mentor. I spent around five months reading various female and/or queer Black and indigenous poets and,

What are your college plans? “I hope that some of my achievements include successfully learning Japanese and finding a way to combine my love for writing and interest in law and human-rights advocacy into a career that focuses on helping

different communities. I am certain that whatever I do, I want to help uplift marginalized voices and aid in providing spaces and resources that strengthen those communities.” What is your proudest accomplishment? “I think my proudest accomplishment as of right now would have to be getting into college, and my dream school at that. I am extremely grateful that I had the resources to pursue higher education, and I attribute much of my success to the endless support from my mom and family. They have sacrificed a lot to put me on this path, so being able to attend an institution that offers so many opportunities geared toward my interests makes me happier than you can imagine.” What defines your generation? “My generation is more willing to accept and understand other people even if they come from different backgrounds and communities. We’re courageous in fighting for what we think is right. I am hopeful that my generation will continue pushing for a society that is inclusive and appreciative of how beautifully diverse the world really is.”

QUICK TAKES Advice to high school freshmen: “Have fun and prioritize your mental health! You’re still a child and still growing, so don’t stress yourself out too much and enjoy your childhood. Be responsible, of course, but also realize that you have so much to look forward to during and after high school. Allow yourself space to explore it all.” My motto: “You’ll probably laugh about this in two weeks, so don’t convince yourself that this is the end of the world.” Superpower pick: “Telekinesis. I just think being able to move objects with your mind sounds so powerful and intimidating, so I would love to have that as my superpower.”

Do you have a favorite class senior year? “My favorite subject would have to be between English and Economics and Politics. I’ve loved to write since I was younger, specifically poetry, so my relationship with my English classes has always been something intimate and exciting for me. I adore creative writing and experimenting with language

What's a recent success? “One of my major academic successes was taking ten AP courses in four years: four during junior year and four during senior year. I was told that it would be a lot of work and that it may be easier to take fewer AP courses. But I wanted to challenge myself and I took on the course load, and I succeeded. I succeeded on the AP exams and ended my high school career with a 100.1 GPA.”

How did Covid change you? “It was like the world turned upside down. I was just coming back from a service trip from Iona Prep called Mission Peru, and two weeks later the entire world froze in time. My plans for SAT testing and college visits were thrown out of the window. Classes became virtual. Still, I accomplished what I could with what I had.” Why do you love math? “I love the joy of working through problems and finding a solution with numbers. Learning math is like learning a language except in numbers. I knew this was my favorite subject when in eighth grade, I was sitting with my mom, studying for the placement exams for high schools, and all of a sudden, math clicked for me. It’s my favorite subject.”

What are your plans? “After much experience, I want to create a nonprofit organization that would help underserved people in the city of Stamford or in another city in any financial advice. I would be there to help these people file their taxes or get free financial help. I wanted to do this after working on a service trip

called Mission Peru. I witnessed dire poverty, and I wondered how the people in poverty in America can be helped, especially when many are uneducated.” What is the Science Research Program? “The course, connected with the University of Albany, allows students to research a relevant science topic. I decided to research cancer immunotherapy—the study of using one’s immune cells to find and eliminate cancer cells. I began researching all types of immunotherapies like CAR-T cell therapies, dendritic cell vaccines and anti-tumor monoclonal antibodies until I found my mentor, Dr. Claudia Gravekamp from Albert Einstein Medical College. She researches the use of attenuated Listeria monocytogenes as a cancer immunotherapy agent against early and advanced cancers, particularly pancreatic adenocarcinomas. We decided to write a review of literature because I could not work in her lab due to age restrictions. We are completing that review this year and it will be published in a medical journal. The review is on the history of Listeria. I completed ninety hours of research over the summer of 2019 and received two credits and received four credits for the 2019–20 school year. Additionally, I was given the privilege to use and present my research during symposiums in May 2019 and 2020.”

QUICK TAKES Big challenge: “Working to lose weight.” Currently binge watching: “The Umbrella Academy on Netflix.” Most like to meet: “Steve Jobs, because I am a huge fan of Apple.” Superpower pick: “Flying.”

Off campus, he advocated for and attended Iona Preparatory School’s annual Mission Peru service-immersion trip by collecting supplies and then building homes and painting schools for the marginalized of Lima. He is also a counselor for the weeklong Edmund Rice Camp, a free summer experience for underprivileged children. He spent more than 300 hours over the past five years assisting St. Leo’s fair in his hometown of Stamford and volunteered for Inspirica soup kitchens. It’s as if he can’t help but jump in when he sees a need, even circulating cooking videos to encourage his peers to eat healthy and starting his own tutoring service for third through sixth graders. He did all this and maintained a high GPA in the Superior Talent Enrichment Program and was an inaugural participant in the Science Research Program. Given his diversified interests, Josh is looking to study business (accounting, finance and entrepreneurship) at Boston College and hopes to include science in his career.

DANIEL CLAVELLI

St. Luke’s School

What accomplishment makes you the most proud? “My proudest accomplishment was my trip to Nigeria in the summer between my ninth and tenth grades. On this trip I helped provide technology support to students in Nigeria, as well as bringing supplies, including devices among other things, to those students. What made this trip so successful is that I was able to use my knowledge of, and interest in, technology to help improve the lives of struggling students in their community. This blend of helping students who had never gotten the opportunity to use technology before while enjoying opportunities to work with computers made this trip one of the most incredible experiences of my life.”

What do you love about computer science? “Computer science is highly applicable to so many aspects of our daily lives and the impact that it can have on people has struck an interest in me. Through it I’ve also been able to develop stronger thinking and reasoning skills that are valuable to me even beyond the computer science field. Knowledge of computer science is relevant to so much and opens up so many possibilities.”

to seek help, as I understand the importance of getting a teacher’s support and consistently meet with teachers outside of class for extra help and for advice on how to be successful in their classes. The most notable aspect of myself as a student is my drive to succeed and improve, and this has led me to develop strong relationships with my teachers that are beneficial to my success in school.” What draws you to your future career? “The great thing about the computer science field is that it will allow me to help others while providing a chance for me to pursue and develop my interest in computers and technology. This coming school year, I will be working on a full-year project that takes a deep dive into artificial intelligence, which has the ability to have a great impact on people and is also highly interesting to me as a student. This dual side of the

What would your teachers say about you? “I think my teachers would say that I put great amounts of effort into my schoolwork, as being successful in my classes is extremely important to me. This hard-working and conscientious approach has guided me well through several difficult course loads and has helped me become a stronger student. They would also probably note my willingness

Best part of high school? “My school provides so many opportunities for students to succeed. The school gives the ability to do projects, take classes and pursue knowledge in the areas of my interest while introducing me to several different fields so that I can get an idea of all the options for me. There is always room for students at my school to pursue their interests through courses and activities, and the teachers are extremely helpful and supportive. Because of a balance between classes and extracurricular activities, there are always opportunities for students to find what they need to succeed.”

QUICK TAKES Tip for succeeding in high school: “Work with your teachers.” Advice to high school freshmen: “Try classes that interest you.” Favorite club: “Technical theater, the application of technical interests.” Summer 2021 in five words or fewer: “A chance to relax.”

aniel Clavelli consistently gets A’s with a course load filled with honors, advanced and AP classes, and he has won academic awards in history, math and world language (focusing on Latin and Latin literature). But he shines brightest when it comes to his incredible computer skills. He began studying computer architecture at age thirteen and started building, studying and restoring computers, including models going back to the early 1980s. He brings that talent to his work in his St. Luke School’s Theater Tech, where his speciality is sound design and audio engineering. He’s worked on eleven productions over the last five years, and that work has become even more challenging because of Covid as tech crew transitions between in-person and online productions. Daniel put his computer knowledge to work during a volunteer trip to Africa to help communities in need. As he became aware that access to technology created an inequity in learning environments, he worked with the Nigerian Education Foundation, St. Luke’s School and Pfizer to source, design and build the first internet lab for the University of Abuja in the capital district. He then trained the students on how to support the new technology, including a library of iPads distributed to secondary schools throughout Abuja. He continues to provide remote technology support. A St. Luke’s Senior Scholar— self-study and coursework for a year—he chose the topic computer programming.

You excel in so many subjects. Do you have a favorite? “I adore math. I took Calculus 3 already, and considering I was a Kumon kid growing up, math has always surrounded me. I really loved my AP Statistics class—maybe even more than

was a huge accomplishment for me. What I attribute most to my success is drive. This is something I dreamed about doing, and while I didn’t think I could do it this early in my career, the perseverance that I had, along with my amazing team, is what got us to that finish line. The belief that I could have a lasting impact and make a change, even so young, is truly what I can attribute all of my successes to.” What did you like about AITE? “I love the environment that everyone in the building creates. There is a drive to learn. AITE is a school of choice, because it is a magnet school, you get in through a lottery. Everyone there wants to be there and everyone there wants to learn and grow and explore. I am in the biomedical sciences pathway, and there’s an engineering and business pathway as well, and AITE allows everyone to explore their interests at a young age.”

change through advocating and awareness, but in the future, I want to go into the science behind it. I want to learn about the intricacies of the brain and be able to help from a research standpoint.” What is your proudest accomplishment? “My proudest accomplishment academically is getting my research paper accepted into and published at the IEEE MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference. During my internship last summer, a team of four other remarkable women and I researched the teenage vaping epidemic. We worked on a paper titled ‘LowCost Vaping Detectors to Mitigate Teenage Vaping.’ As an aspiring researcher, being able to start that process and actually get a paper published at a conference

What are your plans? “I want to go into research, specifically on neuroscience and the brain. What inspires me most is a mental-health club at my school. My senior year will be my third year on the executive board, and I have learned so much about mental health and the need for mental-health awareness. Right now, I am able to make a

What defines your generation? “Power. My generation knows we have the power to make a change. We are taking things into our own hands, hosting rallies and protests and petitions. We know we have the ability to change what we don’t like or what we believe isn’t right. We are defined by our drive, and I think that is a very powerful thing.”

QUICK TAKES Tip for high-school success: “Plan! I have a planner that I color code.” Favorite extracurricular: “Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council. We advocate for mental-health awareness, sexualassault awareness and suicide prevention. I know I am making a change with every single event I do and activity we plan.” Superpower pick: “Mind reading.”

eet the next president— of the world. That’s the case according to Aishwarya Sivasubramanian’s counselor, Joshua Bogard, a Stamford-based interdistrict magnate school AITE (Academy of Information Technology and Engineering). “She is a difference maker, and I tell her all the time she has my vote for President of the World,” he says. “She commits herself to changing our local as well as our greater community.” The Stamford resident is involved in the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Council (MYLC) as an executive board member, Interact (a branch of Rotary Club International) Club President, and Debate State Champion. Her paper on low-cost vaping detectors was published and presented at the 2020 IEEE MIT Undergraduate Research Technology Conference. She researched the effects of vaping on the community. Further, in the Connecticut Debate State Tournament, Aishwarya placed first as an individual speaker and second with her teammate. As juniors, they did not have the debate experience of senior competitors, they didn’t have a strong background on the topic, and they had to debate virtually. So they put in the work all year to prepare. That work paid off.

GIOVANNA ARMETTA mention in the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and CSEF competitions. She also won a Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award for Excellence in Science this year.

What do you like about King? “I love that high school has enabled me to try classes and activities that I never would have imagined possible, such as working in a professional lab, academically competing with other schools or learning about the diversity of thoughts and people around me.”

A challenge you’ve overcome? “When I decided to change skating teams, I didn’t realize that the eight years of developing a style of skating would need to be changed. But it made sense, each team has its own look and feel. I spent the next year trying to evolve and adjust to match my new team. After all, it’s called synchronized skating for a reason! At times it seemed impossible—a full load of advanced courses, internships and needing to retrain my brain and muscles to skate in a different style. It made me a better skater and student, and a more mature person.”

What is your lab work at Memorial Sloan Kettering? “The lab is involved in researching muscle formation and repair and is interesting to me as it involves various muscular dystrophies, genetics and the molecular biology field. I am also interested in bioinformatics and statistical analysis, and plan to pursue these subjects further in college. I think research in this area, combined with new machine learning, can make positive changes in the world. My interest in this lab work originated

with my ten years of experience as a competitive synchronized ice skater. Over those ten years, I have dealt with all kinds of injuries, both joint and muscular. I wondered how the body repaired itself and what would happen if something went wrong in the process. This led me to explore muscle repair, stem cells and muscular dystrophies. After doing research concerning these diseases and injuries, I was hooked and jumped at the opportunity to work on projects in this lab.” What are your plans? “I’ve expanded my area of study to include computer science classes as well as a summer research project with the iResearch Institute, which helps to develop data science and coding skills to tackle large-scale data sets found in modern scientific research. I plan to continue these studies in college to advance my knowledge and field of work. I’d like to pair the natural sciences, such as biology and chemistry, with data and computer science.” You run WeAreStemGirls.com? “Yes, our pay-it-forward website will support young girls interested in STEM, knowing there are already many of us doing good work, learning and finding our own way in the ever-evolving worlds of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We want to encourage young girls to excel in something they love and gain exposure to new ideas and fulfilling subjects. Even our motto encourages love of learning: Think! ...like a girl.”

QUICK TAKES Favorite club: “GAINS focuses on girls in grades 9 through 12 and enables us to support one another and share our experiences and learn more about having careers and lives in STEM.” Most want to meet: “Marie Curie.”

tamford’s Giovanna Armetta, now a senior at King School, is a competitive synchronized ice skater for Team USA on Image Junior, and will shortly become a Quadruple Gold Medalist with the U.S. Figure Skating Association. In the midst of Covid, she had the opportunity to switch from the synchronized ice-skating organization that she had been competing with for eight years, to be able to skate for Team USA. Her love of skating has even led her to teaching young skaters in the USFS Learn to Skate program. She balances her competitive athletics with rigorous academics. For example, she is part of the math team as well as Girls Advancing in STEM Club (GAINS)—and will earn a Certificate of Distinction in STEM through King School. She was also selected to participate in King’s Advanced Science Program for Independent Research (ASPIRE), a two-and-a-half-year science-based advanced seminar. She interns at the research facility at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This year she placed fourth in the Connecticut STEM State Fair in the Health and Medical category for her research project, “Mispositioned Myonuclei Likely to Contribute to Muscle Fatigue,” which she developed with the Baylies Lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The previous year, she took Best-in-Fair Overall Winner, in recognition of scientific work, as well as first place for tenth-grade participants in King’s Science Fair (her project looked at molecules in bacteria in athletic footwear). And her work on muscular dystrophies received awards at the CTSTEM Fair and honorable

What would your teachers say about you? “I am a very energetic and positive person in general and especially in the classroom environment. I try to think out of the box and express my thoughts as much as possible. At Lauralton, out-of-theordinary opinions and expressions are acknowledged. No matter how ridiculous my questions may sound, they tend to start new and progressing classroom discussions.”

tamford’s Zy’Anna Cox has a way of making things better. She not only re-invigorated Lauralton Hall’s Cares Club as its president (2020–’21) while also participating in Key Club, Student Council, Environmental Club, Stock Market Club and the Golf Team (now captain), she also spends time improving things outside of school. She is a Mill River Steward, for which she learns about park stewardships and careers in conservation, and she has volunteered for the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford since eighth grade. She’s also building a bright future for her academic pursuits. She was selected as a prestigious W.E.B. DuBois Scholar at Princeton University (held virtually because of Covid restrictions) and focused on leadership and scholarship through collaborative learning A senior, she is weighing her college options. Beyond that, she says, “I have an inspiration to work in a profession where I am able to help bring communities together and assist people in the process of becoming their best self.”

Do you have a favorite subject? “My favorite subject is U.S. history. In this class we learned about America’s traumatic past, and we are able to compare this to today’s world. We are able to express our thoughts about what has happened in our past and we talk about whether these things could have been prevented. I enjoy this class because our class discussions make me think deeper about the world and how much it is evolving.”

made me nervous. Having to make new friends seemed like a struggle initially but Lauralton’s sisterhood made adjusting so much easier. Lauralton Hall values the idea of sisterhood and ambition. I became a better version of myself in these past years attending Lauralton. My strive for greatness has increased extensively.”

What did you like about your high school? “Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall has been an amazing experience. Coming from a local public school in my town to Lauralton was a change I had to adapt to. Living so far from school

QUICK TAKES Advice to high school freshmen: “Be active. Join clubs, play a sport, learn how to socialize with your new peers. You got this!” Favorite club: “LH Cares/DICE. When I came to Lauralton, the diversity club was no longer active, so I restarted it. I worked with my peers to come up with ideas and topics we should discuss.” Volunteering: “I volunteered at a foundation that supports and uplifts women who have been in domestic violence situations. We helped them regain their confidence and feel safe again.”

Who motivates you? “My mother has been one of my biggest sources of motivation and inspiration. Her dedication to her business along with being able to balance the role of a mother and wife makes me feel as if anything is possible. She pushes me to be the best version of myself. No matter the circumstance, I was always told to be myself and that

How did Covid impact you? “This pandemic was definitely a new and surprising experience. Lauralton Hall was the first of many to close down. The virtual experience was something that I had to adjust to. It was harder to learn from the comfort of my home, but I got through it and remained positive. Covid has changed normal school experiences like prom and graduations. Lauralton made an effort to keep our high school experiences as normal as possible. I attended prom, and although it was outside, it was amazing to still have that experience.”

hrowing your hat in the ring” is an old idiom, but it suits Fairfield Prep graduate and Stamford resident Colin MacNeill. “At every turn in his Prep career, he looked for the next sport, volunteer activity or activity to get involved in,” says his counselor, Rick Hutchinson. Colin’s athleticism, both physical and mental toughness, is on full display when he plays football as offensive lineman or rugby as lock. Both sports required the student-athlete to workout extensively year-round. But there is even more to him. At every opportunity, Colin signed up Prep’s Kairos retreat or to help promote the school. He was a Freshman Retreat Leader, Freshman Shadow Day Host, Open House Ambassador, Freshman Parents tour guide and volunteer counselor for Brooklyn Jesuit prep students in the summer. And while that is a compliment, it doesn’t show the true depth of Colin’s character. “He is passionate about everything he does. He doesn’t do anything in half measures,” says Hutchinson. “When he was working on college applications, he was constantly asking questions and was usually the first to get tasks done in his class. Ask him to fill out a survey and he has the longest responses of any student. When he hosted a German student for several weeks on an exchange program, Colin was one of the leaders in planning events for not only his student, but all the other visiting students as well.” His volunteer work started back in middle school and has consistently exceeded any

service requirement at school. Moreover, he simply does a lot of it. Consider this sample of what he has done: giving presentations at nature centers in Cape Cod; creating a kindness rock garden by a river hiking trail; packing Blessings Bags for the Bridgeport Rescue Mission; sorting donated books for the Read to Grow program; and making fleece blankets for critically ill children with Brady’s Smile at Yale-New Haven Hospital. When he started high school, he focused his efforts on volunteering for the Special Olympics as well as shaving his head for the St. Baldrick’s cancer fundraiser. He is, above all else, a giving and talented team player.

What did you like about attending Fairfield Prep? “The brotherhood and sense of community and acceptance were truly special. I also liked being part of the traditions, and the school campus is a beautiful place.” What is your proudest accomplishment, and to what do you attribute your success? “Graduating summa cum laude from Prep has been my proudest accomplishment. Support from my teachers and parents helped to motivate me to achieve this success.” What do you hope to achieve in college?

“While attending Boston College, I want to explore the city’s cultural aspects—museums and music venues. I look forward to playing Club Rugby, connecting with meaningful volunteer opportunities and meeting new people. I welcome the challenge of both my liberal arts and business classes and hope to achieve academic success.” What was you a favorite extracurricular at Fairfield Prep? “Rugby because it was so consistently fun due to the friendships and camaraderie that resulted in being part of the team.” Is there any place in the world that you would love to visit some day? “To visit Uberlingen, Germany, and its surroundings. In fall 2019, as part of a Fairfield Prep exchange program with a school in Uberlingen, my family hosted a teenager named Ludwig, and I was supposed to visit his home in the spring of 2020. In addition to being exposed to German culture, I would also have learned about what it is like to be a part of a large family as Ludwig is one of seven, and I am an only child.”

QUICK TAKES Tip for succeeding in high school: “Stay organized and do your homework. Also, don’t procrastinate when you have a large project or writing assignment due.” If I could meet anyone: “My grandmother who passed away before I was born. Everyone says she was such a kind, caring person and a fantastic baker and cook. I know she would have been very involved in my life.”

225 TOP DENTISTS IN FAIRFIELD COUNTY

ur smiles say a lot about us. So finding the right dental professional is very important. We’re here to help with our 2021 guide to leading dental practitioners in Fairfield County. We turned to topDentists, a leading dental data research firm, for its inventory of elite practitioners. Its process is simple: TopDentists surveyors asked area specialists who are members of the American Dental Association to evaluate their peers. The criteria included experience, continuing education, patient care and use

of new technologies. Respondents were also asked to put aside personal and political bias and use only their knowledge of a peer’s work when evaluating nominees. Final selections were made after careful examination of credentials and past records with state academies and dental boards. So, whether or not you’ve put off your regular cleaning, your child needs braces or you’ve been thinking about whitening, take a look. The list that follows is sure to include a specialist you can count on. »

HOW IT’S DONE METHODOLOGY BEHIND THE TOP DENTISTS LIST This list is excerpted from the 2021 topDentists™ list, a database that includes listings of more than 220 dentists and specialists in the Fairfield County area. The list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at usatopdentists.com. For more information call 706-364-0853; write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903; email info@usatopdentists.com

SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?” This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and, of course, physical results. The nomination pool of dentists consists of all dentists listed online with the American Dental Association as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peers’ work when evaluating the other nominees. Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received and status in various dental academies can play a factor in our decision. Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists. Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

JACK DEGRADO, D.D.S. STAMFORD DENTAL GROUP, LLC SPECIALTY: Prosthodontics: Specializes in Complex, Restorative and Implant Dentistry 47 Oak Street, Suite 220, Stamford, CT 203.325.4700 stamforddentalgroup.com stamforddental@gmail.com

DR. JACK DEGRADO graduated from Columbia College of Dental Medicine. He completed his residency at Manhattan VA hospital, and a two-year fellowship in implantology at Brookdale University Hospital He also did a specialty residency in prosthodontics at Montefiore Medical Center. His growing practice, Stamford Dental Group, founded over 20 years ago, now has three dentists specializing in prosthodontics. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. DeGrado is recognized as a specialist in complex implant cases and cosmetic dentistry. Other dentists and specialists refer to him complicated cases that require additional expertise. His focus is providing alternatives to people suffering with dentures or loss of teeth. People with dentures only have 10 percent of their chewing capacity because the “dentures are sitting on soft tissue,” he notes. “With implants, it’s 90 percent,” and implant supported teeth don’t slip out while eating, as dentures do. He also offers Teeth in One Day, which includes removal of bad teeth and placement of implants and fixed teeth, for immediate improvement. Dr. DeGrado understands that many people may resist coming to a dentist due to fear of Covid-19. That is why the safety of his patients and staff are a top priority. His office complies with strict CSDA and CDC guidelines. In addition, his office has special hospital grade air filtration systems. They do everything to keep patients and staff safe. Stamford Dental Group is a state of the art practice that uses the latest technologies. The 3D Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)

provides more accurate images of bone, teeth and anatomy. BIOLASE laser is used to do fillings without anesthesia and gum surgery with minimal discomfort. They use a Trios digital scanner to avoid messy impressions and increase accuracy. To enhance people’s smiles, Dr. DeGrado offers digital smile design and porcelain veneers. His specialty is to mend teeth to make them healthy and functional and put the finishing touches with cosmetic dentistry. He believes that “great patient care goes hand-in-hand with customer service, which includes the staff at the front desk. From the minute

people walk in, they see a difference.” He spends a lot of time during initial consultations to understand patients’ needs, wants and expectations, and treatment plans are “designed to meet and exceed expectations.” Dr. DeGrado also believes in giving back to the community. For 5 years, he has held an annual Dentistry from the Hear event at this office and together with his dentists and hygienists, donated free dental services to over 350 patients. He also supports the Food Bank of Fairfield County and Operation Smile, which provides surgeries to children with facial abnormalities.

Dr. Christensen: DDS: Columbia University-College of Dental Medicine; MS, Orthodontic Residency: Columbia University-College of Dental Medicine

Years of practice?

Dr. Ryan has been practicing for twenty-eight years. She graduated dental school in 1992 and completed her orthodontic training in 1995. Dr. Christensen has been practicing for thirteen years. She graduated dental school in 2007 and completed her

orthodontic training in 2010.

How do you change people’s lives?

What sets you apart from your competition?

We feel it is important to recognize a need for compassion beyond braces. We want our patients to feel beautiful and smile on the inside, as well as on the outside. Our motto is treat each patient as if they are our family member. We truly enjoy our patients and look forward to their visits. We strive to make our office the most safe and comfortable environment possible. Additionally, we feel blessed to live and work in such a great community. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Christensen believe in paying it forward. We support local charities to make our community a better place for everyone. Every month, we commit a portion of our proceeds to a charitable organization. Doing this makes our community and our world a better place.

At Greenwich Braces, two orthodontic minds, with years of extensive training and experience, go into formulating each orthodontic treatment plan. Dr. Ryan and Dr. Christensen combine the greatest aspects of their skills and experience to provide the best care possible to our patients. Over the past 22 years, we have treated more than 3,900 orthodontic patients with braces, Invisalign® and a variety of other treatment modalities. Some of our patients have even commuted from as far away as London, Qatar, Atlanta, Chicago, New York and New Jersey, to be treated in our office.

He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tufts School of Dentistry; and completed his Postdoctoral Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Wong has taught as a clinical instructor in the Undergraduate Dental Program at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine; and was also an associate professor in the Graduate Orthodontic Program at New York University, College of Dentistry. Beyond his basic orthodontic training, Dr. Wong has always been a strong believer of Continuing

Education. This way he has been able to keep up with the latest trends in orthodontic methods and technologies. Dr. Wong is one of the original graduates of the Invisalign Master’s Program. Over the Covid-19 Pandemic, Dr. Wong completed his Align Intensive Fellowship. In growing children and adolescents, Dr. Wong can use a variety of methods that utilizes their growth potential. This allows him to improve/correct any predetermined growth patterns or destructive oral habits that are causing the patient’s malocclusion. In adult orthodontic cases, there is no growth to help correct their malocclusions. Therefore, the orthodontic treatment goals, methods and prognosis are very different from that of a growing child. In more

complicated adult cases, the lack of growth sometimes makes it necessary to design an interdisciplinary treatment plan. This requires collaboration with the patient’s general dentist, and/or other dental specialists. Dr. Wong’s orthodontic practice has prided itself in providing the highest quality of service for every child, adolescent or adult patient that comes to his office. He has always believed in maintaining the highest level of professional ethics, and he will only start orthodontic treatment if and when it is appropriate to do so. His capable and friendly staff has always tried to make every patient’s orthodontic treatment an enjoyable experience in a comfortable, relaxed environment.

Why is it important for children to get screened by the age of 7? The American Association of Orthodontics recommends an evaluation by an orthodontist by age seven because many times early developmental treatment guides permanent teeth into a more favorable position, lowers the risk of dental trauma and can correct skeletal discrepancies.

About Dr. Dantini: Peter Dantini, DDS, is the expertise behind Dantini Dental of Stamford. Dr. Dantini received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry. Dr. Dantini has been a life long resident of Stamford and New Canaan and has been an active member in both communities.

We wish our finalists much luck, and we thank all who entered, as well as our judges and our generous sponsors, who have made this celebration possible.

The following is a listing of the 2021 A-List Awards finalists by category. Please note that this listing includes the entrant’s name and contact information for each finalist project. To view the full list of professionals credited for each project as well as a project photo, please visit athomealistawards.com to view our digital A-list Awards program. Each finalist “page” can be shared on social media, and the link to each page can be included on a website or forwarded via email.

Our local design community is truly a community, and that has never been more evident than during the past eighteen months. It’s a community built on supportive partnerships, behind-the-scenes collaborations, and problem-solving and magic-making, and when faced with unprecedented challenges, this community proved how essential good design is to living life to the fullest. This year’s A-List competition is full of luxurious yet livable spaces that convey the caliber of talent that exists in this community. Our esteemed panel of judges had the very difficult task of determining the finalists from a truly impressive pool of submissions, and we thank our judges for giving their time and expertise to this year’s competition.

Welcome to athome magazine’s twelfth annual A-List Awards.

SEPT/OCT 2021 / DONNA MOFFLY

I

“Miss Van Houghton was all comfort and forgiveness— something to remember, especially when I had children.”

t’s a new school year, a good time to reflect on what our teachers mean to us. Long ago, I was a “lifer” (K-12) at Hathaway Brown School in Cleveland, having chosen H.B. over Laurel, the rival girls’ school, because it had a bigger dollhouse. Like everybody, I had my favorite teachers and my not-so-so’s, but they taught me sundry skills well beyond academics. For instance: Being understanding. During a firstgrade rest period, I spread my blanket under a double-decker trolley of Mason jars full of paint for art class. Except I woke up, sat up, knocked the thing over and made a giant multicolored mess. I was grief-stricken, but Miss Van Houghton was all comfort and forgiveness—something to remember, especially when I had children. Making decisions. My piano teacher Mrs. Schneider would play three pieces and let me decide what to learn next. Not the pizzicato, I told her at age seven, because “it sounded like a beetle piddling on a leaf.” I loved having a voice in my own destiny. Escaping reality. In upper school Miss Thompson, a frazzled French teacher, rushed up to me before class one morning and asked, “Have you seen ‘Donna Clegg?” “Yes,” I answered, pointing down the hall. “She went that way.” And off she went in hot pursuit of— me! I’d learned how to be an artful dodger. Sharing stories. From dear Miss Cleveland (her real name), a retired English teacher, I learned the magic of storytelling— the reason I love my job today. Every so often she’d come visit to tell us tales from Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad. We were spell-bound. Accepting others. After escaping from Nazi Germany, our chemistry teacher Mrs. Keri had found a job at a girls’ school in Turkey. When she’d ask them things like, “Do you know what H20 means?”, though clueless, they’d all say, “Yes,” because it was considered stamfordmag.com

impolite to say, “No.” Weird and wonderful. I became fascinated with other cultures. Keeping a lid on. Probably trying to get our attention, our Latin teacher Miss Blake said that “there ought to be a war in this country” so we’d appreciate what the Romans had to go through. Hmm. I reported this to my father, an exec with TRW, a company that supplied the defense industry, and he sent the FBI to school to investigate her. Me and my big mouth. I dropped Latin senior year. Following directions. Miss Bruce, our scary upper school English teacher, was a stickler for rules. When she asked us to write 800 words about something familiar, for some mad reason I wrote about a guy escaping from a concentration camp. “D for the day, Clegg!” still echoes in my ears. Now I’m a stickler about assignments—and have given plenty of them. Negotiating successfully. Senior year, six of us had banded together to give a dance at the Union Club. Miss Coburn, the headmistress, called me into her office to ask if we’d invite the board chairman’s granddaughter, an out-of-town visitor. I’d met the girl, liked her and said sure, but how about a trade-off? When we went out to lunch on Fridays (a senior privilege), we wanted to wear lipstick and loafers instead of tied shoes. Shocked, Miss Coburn called my mother. “That’s not my problem,” Mother told her. “You deal with Donna.” We got lipstick and loafers, and the young lady had a lovely time. For sure I learned more than academics from my teachers, but I taught them something, too—how to change a tire. After I got my driver’s license, Dad insisted I learn some mechanics at the company garage, so I was prepared when I got a flat by the main entrance—and drew quite the audience. Anyway, here’s to our wonderful teachers and, thanks to them, all the “extras” that we can take with us for our lifetimes.
