OF WIND & WATER

… and boats. It’s serious summer now, so I thought I’d muse on what happens when you marry a sailor—which is plenty.

It started on our honeymoon when Jack chartered a sailboat with paid captain and first mate in the Virgin Islands—to see how I liked it. Never mind he had me doing laps around the deck to get my sea legs without stubbing my toes on those little brass cleats. I did like it. The captain was a real pro from Argentina, but his wife was a real bitch from the Bronx who kept yelling at him for forgetting the potatoes.

So we sailed on, eventually in our own thirty-foot Nonsuch Purple Tiger out of Riverside Yacht Club. (Our partner Alec Robertson went to Williams with its purple cow and Jack to Princeton with its tiger.)

Jack, an experienced deep-water sailor, was invited on plenty of Bermuda Races. I’d fly down and sit around with the ladies waiting for our boats to cross the line; but once I agreed to sail back on Newbold Smith’s Reindeer. It took six long days. Everyone was sick except Newbold, Jack and me. We thrashed around in the Gulf Stream forty-eight hours— raining like crazy above, super-hot below and me strapped to the gimbled stove in my bathing suit trying to keep us fed. Then it cleared and there we were, a little dot on an endless sea. One night on watch, Jack and I were savoring the peace of being alone under the stars, when suddenly bearing down on us came a monster from Mars—too high for a boat, too low for a plane. Turned out it was a blimp looking for a missing yacht. Tragically, later it made the back page of LIFE magazine going down in flames.

Marry a sailor and you never run out of stories. Helping Jack ferry a boat from Nova Scotia to Maine after a MarbleheadHalifax Race, I spent my entire time in the bow listening for fog horns, spotting lobster

pots and getting seasick. (Jonathan was born eight months later.) Meanwhile, Wooly Henry panicked over a fire in the galley and threw the oven overboard. Sure was tricky finding someone in Northeast Harbor to custom-make a new one before the owner showed up.

There were more serious happenings, too. In 1989 Jack was swept off Bob Hart’s ketch Athene in a Force Nine gale in the North Atlantic. The skipper was white knuckled at the wheel, when Jack, being dragged through the water by his lifeline, looked up at him and said: “Would you mind giving me a hand?” Ever the Philadelphia gentleman. But they lived through it, arriving safely at the world’s oldest yacht club in Cork, Ireland.

Then he made headlines in Greenwich Time when he went for a Sunday sail, fell off the boat and, with halyard wrapped around his ankle, was towed feet first toward Long Island with Purple Tiger on auto pilot clocking four knots. Blessedly, Jack managed to kick off a shoe, and the line released. We had to replace his hearing aids, glasses and wallet, but I didn’t have to replace a husband.

Thus, it made sense for me to take a course for first mates at the yacht club entitled “Suddenly Alone.” The question was: “What’s the first thing you do if your husband has a heart attack or falls overboard?” Whereupon somebody quipped: “Get help selling the boat!”

Well, maybe.

I married a sailor, so I bought Bonine and Topsiders. He married a singer and became a Grace Notes groupie. Supporting each other’s interests makes for better marriages.

But the day finally came when we had to drop the sails. It’s some consolation that Purple Tiger is now owned by a young family who just loves messing about in boats. And not too long ago she was spotted at anchor in Stonington, still bearing her funky name on her transom. S

PICKLEBALL AMERICA OPENS IN THE STAMFORD TOWN CENTER

One of the fastest growing trends in American culture is the sport of pickleball. Combining elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong, this paddle sport has been embraced by folks thanks to its ease of play, low cost of entry and sociability factor (pickle and a pint, anyone?). It comes as no surprise in a city that works hard and plays harder that Stamford was chosen to anchor Pickleball America (pickleballamerica.us), one of the largest

indoor pickleball venues in the country.

Pickleball America was founded by four Stamford entrepreneurs, Mia Schipani, Joe Schipani, Jay Waldner and Jay Ross, who wanted to open a “Sportstainment” facility with a pickleball focus. “Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in the country,” says Mia Schipani, chief marketing officer and founding member of Pickleball America.

“Pickleball America is not just a new anchor store for The

Stamford Town Center, we are now the new anchor experience for our community and leading the way for malls around the country. We are well centered for neighboring cities with a high volume of existing and inquiring pickleball players with more than enough courts to satisfy the demand of the community.

The massive 28-court, 80,000 square foot facility, repurposed in the former two-story Saks OFF 5TH retail location, will have

two floors complete with sport-sanctioned flooring fitted with the non-slip, true pickleball bounce court material that is used in official tournament play, bleacher seating and additional amenities throughout the space such as locker rooms, showers and even a lounge and café. Whether you’re new to the sport or a passionate veteran, the sport creates a maximum engagement for all participants. “The culture of the game facilitates players of all levels to filter in and out of games with a ‘paddle in the rack’ theory that supports a fair and balanced process to offer equal amount of playing time and social interaction among all players,” says Schipani. “Pickleball is open to everyone of all ages, fostering diverse and inclusive socialization.”

Pickleball America will have a fully developed program for player drop-ins, leagues, season court bookings and lessons for local and regional visitors. They also have plans to utilize the multi-use space theory for a variety of capabilities from national and regional tournaments, learning seminars, corporate off-sites, live music concerts and other sporting and social events such as e-gaming, martial arts, yoga and cornhole—all of which can be live-streamed or broadcasted for TV and online.

As the city continues to innovate and offer the best of what’s around, Schipani and the founding members believe Pickleball America will be no exception. “With each of us being community-minded, racket sports enthusiasts with heart-filled intentions to create the best environment for all players and their families for years to come, we hope to make Pickleball America a place for all to join and enjoy,” says Schipani.

Dink responsibly, Stamford!

SPOTLIGHT ON LOCALS

Stamford residents share their go-to places

JAMIE MULLINS Senior Administrative Assistant, Food Blogger

Where to blow off steam or feel centered

Picking up an iced coffee from either Donut Delight (a Stamford staple) or Humbled Coffeehouse and heading straight to Great Nails on High Ridge Road for a mani/pedi and the absolute BEST massages ever—Helen is my girl. The minute I walk into Great Nails, I immediately feel so much better and much more relaxed. Self-care makes everything better.

Best place for a workout

I usually go on my Peloton every morning before I start my day, nothing better than getting that work out done early. I also really enjoy going for walks/runs when the weather is nice around town, Scalzi Park, Westhill High School Track (go Vikings!). Also, walking around Harbor Point in the warmer months can instantly boost your mood. Underground Fitness is also

one of my favorite gyms in Stamford.

Where to bring out-of-town

guests

Colony, duh! Stamford is the original Colony Grill and I have been going there since I was a baby with my family. My grandpa was best friends with one of the original owners Gene (Bo) Bohannan, so as you can imagine, I spent literally every Friday night there growing up. It is definitely a spot you have to show your out of towners and let them see just how delicious that bar pizza is (pro tip: dip your pizza in the balsamic dressing. So good!) Also, Cafe Silvium. Hands down, the best wine pour in Stamford and the most delicious Italian food.

Favorite place to shop (local) Grade A Shop Rite has been my go-to grocery store since I was young.

“My fiancé and I started a food blog (PhatPhucks) as a little fun side gig to our full-time day jobs. We launched during the height of COVID to help support local restaurants/small businesses. After the effects of COVID, we saw how our influence made a positive impact on restaurants and their livelihood, so we continued our journey. Starting the account has changed our life for the better all around. We love going to events, meeting new people and trying new food. We have made many new friends and connections and we are so grateful.”

Where to blow off steam or feel centered

I am at my best when I’m volunteering and giving back to the community. I often volunteer with the FISLL organization at the Boys and Girls Club in Stamford. I even designed a music recording and composing studio at the Club. The studio was created to give underrepresented youth in Stamford an opportunity to explore the arts. I also like to spend time with the community at the new Police Activities League [PAL]. PAL is located in the former Chester Addison Center on Selleck Street. My entire family was thrilled to volunteer at PAL’s Easter Dinner and Community Giveaway. It was exciting to see over 350 people from our community connecting with Stamford’s Police Department.

Where to bring out-of-town guests:

I am thrilled to bring my out-oftown guests to Union Church on Newfield Ave. It is a place where I spend time sharpening my values and deepening my faith. The church has been located on Newfield since 1977, but it’s been organized and holding services in Stamford since the late 1800s. I also usually find myself bringing guests to

the Stamford Library for their outstanding programming, including hosting book signings and impactful and inspirational panel discussions. Additionally, I always point out the Avon Theater, which has been a staple in the Stamford community for over 80 years (its first film was shown in 1939), and continues to show independent films today.

Best place for a workout

There are more than 56 parks in Stamford. Mill River Park and Scalzi Park are two of my favorites for walking. You can often spot a yoga class going on in Mill River and there is a skate park in Scalzi for the thrill seekers. I’m not that great on a board so I stick to walking.

A cherished Stamford memory

The excitement and buzz at Stamford Hospital as my wife, Makeda, delivered our firstborn in front of the world on TLC Network’s show, “A Baby Story.” The camera crews traveled up to Stamford to be with us as we were expecting our first son, Javan. Our other two children were born at Stamford Hospital as well. The hospital staff was amazing and our experience was phenomenal each time.

PURE IMAGINATION

The world of Alice Temperley is full-blown fantasy: bold prints, boho styling and luxe velvets in a kaleidoscope of jewel tones. And now, she’s bringing her romantic vision to Romo, with help from the studio’s design director, Emily Mould and the introduction of Temperley London x Romo. From dramatic wallcoverings to exquisite upholstery options, the selection of painted patterns and intricate embroideries encourages artful printmixing, where oversized florals work with animal spots and swirling marble motifs meet blooming palms. Add whimsical brush fringe and key tassels for even more embellishment. “More is more” is your mantra here. The idea is to indulge in your playful side, whether or not you’re dressing a historied country house or a London flat. Mould likens her reaction to the finished product to “being a child in a sweet shop, seeing all these beautiful fabrics and intricate details that had been carefully hand stitched.” Get lost in all the eye-candy at Schwartz Design Showroom in Stamford and at romo.com.

GO-TO SPOTS TO WALK, PLAY, EAT AND DRINK WITH YOUR POOCH

Few canines live better than those in Stamford, says Shippan resident Lisa Butler, who bonds with neighbors in Shippan during afternoon walks with Sophie Ann, her adopted Jack Russell Terrier mix, on a three-mile loop. "We may not have a dog park, but we have a dog community with people out walking at all times of day," she says. Where else can you find a neighborhood that puts on a festive annual Holiday Dog Parade and creates a community calendar of their most fetching pups?

For downtown dwellers looking for a dog community, Mill River Dog Park is the place. “We all know each other and we care. People

are inclined to be respectful and look out for each others’ dogs,” says Elsa Mekonen, who visits the park daily with Boba, her poodle mix. “It’s nice to see the thing we love the most, our dogs, bringing so many people together at the park.”

An abundance of open play space can also be found at Harbor Point Commons Park and the adjacent Harbor Point Dog Park, where dogs can run in an off-leash grassy area or test their stamina on a doggie agility course in a separate, enclosed area. On Wednesday evenings in July and August, friends can meet for Yappy Hour at Harbor Point Dog Park, a community event

sponsored by Harbor Point Wines & Spirits.

For beautiful trail walks, it’s hard to beat Bartlett Arboretum and Gardens, where leashed dogs can explore ten hiking trails that stretch across 93 acres. A $25 doggie membership at the Arboretum provides an opportunity to meet doggie playmates and join free dog training classes once a week. Nature seekers can also roam the six woodland and river hikes at Mianus State Park with their dogs on leash. And for views of the Sound, it’s hard to beat the loop at Cove Island Park.

On a warm summer night, bring the pup down to the beer garden at Shippan Landing or Cisco Brewers at the Village for a pint at an outdoor table or visit Lock City Brewing, where your canine companion can sit inside the taproom while you sample a flight of craft beer. For dinner with the dog in tow, book an outdoor table and enjoy the scene at ZaZa’s Gastrobar, Remo’s Brick Oven Pizza, Siena or Capriccio.

taly is in the middle of its hot-girl summer. Hotels are overflowing with Aperol Spritz-sipping tourists living la dolce vita. But as the Game of Thrones saying goes, winter is coming. There’s always a tipping point for the new “it” destinations, and the Dolomite mountains in Cortina, Italy, are about to hit theirs. Europeans have been skiing this part of the Alps for decades. Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics, and James Bond fictionally drove his winter-equipped white Lotus Esprit Turbo down the slopes in The Spy Who Loved Me.

The Dolomites take their name from the carbonate rock of the same name. At dawn and dusk, the mountains are awash in a fiery pink so stunning the Italians have created legends and folk stories about the enrosadira, the alpenglow. This unexpected phenomenon is exclusive to the Dolomites and reason enough to plan a visit.

BEFORE & AFTER

Madonna di Campiglio manages to be simultaneously one of the largest ski resorts in Italy in terms of skiable area and one of the least spoiled. The lifts rise from the picturesque village on the Val di

Sole—the sunny valley—accessing nearly 100 miles of pistes. Book your stay at Lefay Resort and Spa Dolomiti. The staff will make skiing effortless. The only thing they could do to make it easier would be to carry you down the pistes. Ski rentals are on the property; your gear is stored in heated lockers overnight; and you’ll be whisked to the lift, just five minutes away. Oh, and they’ll print your lift ticket for you. True luxury is a world in which you never stand in line.

When you return from a less than grueling day on the slopes, the fever dream of a spa is waiting. The spa covers four levels and is over 53,000 square feet. That’s ten football fields of salt caves, saunas and sprawling jacuzzis. Kids are welcome at the family pool,

and everyone will want to swim through the sliding glass doors to the toasty outdoor pool with a heated floor and expansive view of the mountains. This is the best place to enjoy the enrosadira.

You’ll want to book your trip before they televise the 2026 Winter Olympic downhill events from Cortina. The Dolomites will suddenly be on everyone’s bucket list. Part of the massive Dolomiti Superski, Cortina connects skiers and riders to nearly 750 miles of slopes.

Just two hours from Venice, Cortina isn’t remote—though the towering ring of surrounding Dolomites might make it feel otherwise. And there’s a low-key vibe that’s a far cry from the see-and-be-seen culture of other comparable European ski towns. (I’m looking at you, France.)

HITTING THE SLOPES IN ITALY

They aren’t runs. They are pistes.

There are no green runs. The beginner runs are also called “nursery hills” and are blue. The intermediate level is red and advanced is black.

Italians like their runs like they like their hair, perfectly groomed.

Skiing is more a glamorous pastime than a rigorous sport. So clocking your speed will make you look intensely American. This observation is based on firsthand knowledge.

Skiing has a well-earned reputation for being the sport of the swell set. Skiing the Alps even more so. Images of trust fund babies clad in Gorsuch sipping champagne come to mind. But what if skiing in the Alps is less expensive than hitting Utah or Colorado, including airfare? Lift tickets at most American resorts exceed $200 per day. Lunchtime feels like a sweaty game of musical chairs played in clunky boots with trays of overpriced fried food. Here’s the math.

BATHING BEAUTY

encounters it—in the socks on a stranger’s ankles on the subway, on a hike through a leafy jungle, in the carpet of an airplane on an overnight flight. She grew up traveling with her family and was inspired by the visual beauty of clothing, jewelry and decor from an early age and recalls accompanying her father, an architect, to his office in her native Buenos Aires, at seven years old; there she examined blueprints and sketched ideas for the tiles of his clients’ buildings.

Textiles were her one true love, however, and before going out on her own in 2012, Feinstein spent years designing for bath-linen behemoths like the Brazilian manufacturer Karsten.

If the universe of towels were ruled by a monarch, Carolina Feinstein would be its queen, crowned in a tiara of low-twist terry, sans fringe. Now the Old Greenwich resident, whose beach, bath and tabletop collections have filled the shelves of major retailers including T.J. Maxx, Nordstrom, and Home Goods for three decades, is annexing a new territory:  a 1,000-square-foot, sun-lit boutique in Harbor Point stocked with all the absorption a Nantucket weekender could want. Beach towels in bold, colorful stripes and motifs sit in stacks awaiting a squeeze; plush hoodie-towels decorated with hearts hang on cabana pegs; and bundled bathing kits for kids ages three to 10 pique a summer gift-giver’s curiosity. Also on offer are bath towels in eight

solid colors from Feinstein’s Coventry line, which repurposes approximately 150 plastic bottles per bath sheet.

The Caro Home store, which is accessible via a verdant allee off Pacific Street, and attached to the company’s existing wholesale showroom in a converted brick warehouse, represents a bold move by the entrepreneur who has made her mark on the industry with so-called fashion towels, which now account for 20 percent of the market. Thanks to fewer twists in the yarns that are used, these vibrant and fluffy textiles distinguish themselves from the standard-issue, scratchy rectangles that hang near bathtubs worldwide.

Feinstein is a dyed-in-the-cotton designer, inspired by color and pattern wherever she

In addition to yarn-dyes, jacquards, and double-dobbies, her other love is her husband and fellow Argentine, Andres Hogg, a realestate developer who envisions a thriving village of commercial, office, and residential buildings between Ludlow and Dock Streets. The couple met in 1989—fittingly—at Uruguay’s Punta del Este, the bucket-list destination for the bikini-and-caftan crowd, and moved to New York in 2000. Their two children are their go-to towel models.

Feinstein, who partners with factories and mills in India, Portugal, Turkey and China— and who will soon launch a tabletop line— recalls that even in elementary school she was snubbing convention, wearing orange pinafores—orange remains her signature color—when her classmates were wearing white.

“I have never done what others are doing,” she says.

Prices at the store range from approximately $10 to $45, with the exception of a small selection of bamboo-fiber bedsheets available for $200-plus per set.

How to live your BEST LIFE ON A PLANT-BASED DIET

Dino Sakakini, founder of Layla’s Falafel, leans over a counter that displays hummus, babaganoush and tabbouleh and says, “You can throw meat out the window, because you can get all your protein from hummus, bulgar, and veggies.”

Sakakini was raised on the type of savory Middle-Eastern food served up at Layla’s Falafel, the restaurant group named for his wife with locations in Fairfield, Stamford and Westport. Eight years ago, Sakakini followed his wife’s lead and switched to a plant-based diet. After just one

year, he lost 40 pounds and discontinued almost all of his diabetes and cholesterol medications. “I feel better, I sleep better and I don’t snore as much,” he says, adding that his healthier lifestyle also includes walking five or six miles every day. During lunchtime at Layla’s, a steady stream of people arrive for a falafel pita or a custom bowl, which includes rice or salad, a protein such as falafel or chicken shawarma, a plantbased dip such as hummus, toppings such as red cabbage and pickled cucumber and tahini dressing, which is made from sesame seeds. lunch-goers know, bowls stacked with grains, legumes and crunchy veggies are a quick way to grab a healthy meal.

“When you’ve got rice and beans, you’ve got a complete protein, a golden meal, and every culture has a way to make that work,” says Linda Arpino, RDN, CDN, who advises clients at Life Focus Nutrition Centers in Stamford and is the incoming President of the Connecticut Dietetic Association. “Consider pasta fagioli, Indian dal with rice, lentil soup with potatoes, or tofu, rice and vegetables.”

A leader in her field who lectures worldwide on the role of a plant-based diet in chronic disease prevention, Arpino has been able to help people manage their cholesterol, blood pressure, weight, diabetes and gastrointestinal issues by making simple changes in their diets. It starts with eating less processed foods and more whole foods from plants.

Consider the food groups for the plant-based diet: fruits and vegetables; high-fiber grains,

such as quinoa, farro or brown rice; and plantbased proteins such as tofu or legumes. Now aim for variety to obtain different nutrients. Dinner could be mushroom farro risotto, black bean soup, a green salad and seasonal fruit.

A word to people who avoid carbohydrates: Starchy vegetables such as sweet potatoes provide nutrients and fuel for muscles. Highfiber grains help control cholesterol and remove toxins from the body. In fact, once you switch to a properly planned plant-based diet, you can lower your cholesterol within a few weeks, says Arpino, who conducted a plant-based food plan to reduce health risks for town employees in Greenwich.

“The high-risk employees who participated in the course achieved positive outcomes. We did cholesterol testing after, and almost everyone in the group brought it down significantly and lost weight,” says Arpino. To start experimenting with plant-based recipes, visit her website lfnla.com.

index has soared, from 144.3 at the beginning of 1983 to 3960.66 on the first of this year. Even home prices have risen 500-fold. But as family assets have increased, so too have the ages of progenitors. Cerulli estimates that $84 trillion will be passed along to the next generation of Americans by 2045, $16 trillion in the next ten years alone.

Preparing the next generation for all this wealth is a tall task. Is your family ready?

becoming conscientious stewards of wealth—in the family business and in life. This can prove challenging, as younger generations in wealthy families often exist and socialize in a bubble, the survey noted. They may lack experience with leadership, economics, entrepreneurship, family governance, global investments or even simple budgeting or buying a home.

net-worth clients tackled things like fostering entrepreneurial aspirations, networking and mentoring in addition to markets and economics.

“It’s so much more than market knowledge. It’s a very personal experience,” Wills says. “It’s not just money but family dynamics.”

Citi Private Bank recently surveyed 200 affluent families around the world. What each of them had: a net worth in excess of $25 million. What 62 percent of them didn’t have: a plan for guiding the next generation to be a responsible stakeholder in that wealth.

Family wealth in the United States totaled $140 trillion last year, according to a report by Cerulli Associates. And no wonder. Over the past 40 years, the S&P 500

Cayman Wills, managing director with Citi Private Bank in Greenwich, believes that the key to preparing family members to inherit and manage multigenerational wealth is to “begin at the end. Twenty-five years down the line, what does the successful family look like? Start at that goal and work backward.”

Wills isn’t referring exclusively to preserving or growing those millions. Instead, “success” can mean preparing Muffy and Junior for taking on leadership roles, maintaining family values,

SHARING THE WEALTH

Just as accumulating wealth came from planning, so too should transfering that wealth, Wills says. “How is that decision-making achieved? Many of our clients have an annual family meeting where you can review a lot of these topics. It starts with: what are our longterm goals, and what do we want to instill in our next generation?”

Such conversations can turn prickly. Enlisting help from a financial advisor with expertise in wealth transfer can help. A recent event hosted by the MIT/Sloan School of Management for children of Citi Private Bank’s ultra-high-

With or without help from an advisor, annual family learning programs and visioning sessions not only help prepare future generations to lead the family enterprise, they can also make the family a more cohesive unit. Older family members who may have devoted most of their working life to creating and building wealth may discover that what their children and grandchildren hold dear isn’t the same as what motivated previous generations. Younger generations might not even know the sacrifices and strategies of their forebears. Building multigenerational bonds not only helps preserve wealth, Wills says, it strengthens families.

Increasingly, affluent Americans are choosing to distribute their wealth while they’re still alive. “Giving with a warm hand,” as it were, says Wills. The U.S. tax code currently allows individuals to gift up to $12.9 million to heirs over a lifetime without a federal tax consequence (though that is set to revert to $5 million in 2026). Rather than handing over blocks of cash, ask your financial advisor to model various scenarios and asset allocations that ensure you will have what you need, while sending the rest to trusts set up for your loved ones and your charitable intentions. That’s a true gift: to be able to see your hard work benefiting the people and the causes dear to you.

W INNERS' LIST

Best New Restaurant HAPPY MONKEY

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant in Connecticut is located in Greenwich, and it offers a worldly adventure for food lovers. Start with shared plates at the communal table, or pull up a seat at the handsome bar—this is a friendly and see-and-be-seen approach to dining out. Now, let's talk about food: The menu is the best of Latin flavors for today, such as Shrimp Ceviche in Agua Diablo, Warm White Asparagus in a jalapeño-coriander vinaigrette, crispy fish taco with chipotle mayo, pickled cabbage, apples and habenero with mint, and (for healthy appetities) perhaps the Black Sea Bass with crispy potatoes and red chili lime sauce or just a whole grilled lobster with smoked chile butter.

Burritos

Valencia Luncheria

164 Main St., Norwalk, 203-846-8009; valencialuncheria.com

Best Mexican LA TAQUERIA

Everybody (and we think we mean this literally) loves Mexican food. High-end to street food, it's all good in its own way. But it also makes it a challenge to stand out among the competition, which is just what La Taqueria did. When asked to choose a favorite, our voters were loud and clear: La Taqueria. Chef and owner Dennis Lake found the sweet spot, offering Mexican food in a casual space that feels more like you've happened upon a local haunt. Part of the secret must be in the food, such as (prepare yourself) the Grilled Chicken Burrito, with rice, beans, guacamole, lettuce, pico and rajas, salsa crema and cheese all bundled up in a chewy flour tortilla (go ahead, grab a napkin). As for tacos, choose from Beef Picadillo with Cojita cheese, cilantro and onion, or beerbattered Cod with Chipotle crema, red cabbage and cilantro. We suggest eating in, but this friendly place even delivers.

Best Mediterranean LAYLA'S FALAFEL

Some days you find yourself running around completing errands and knocking to-do's off the endless list when you suddenly realize that you are starving—and you need food now. That's when you take our voters' advice and head over to Layla's. Drop in just as you are and have your choice of filling and flavorful meals. You can build your favorite bowl, with rice or salad, maybe some falafel or chicken shawarma, certainly hummus and any of a dozen toppings, such as pickled cucumbers and tahini. They also offer platters, so you don't have to make any decisions—just a plate of, say a chicken kabob, and french fries, falafel, hummus, pita and baklava. There's even plenty for vegetarians and meatlovers alike to find delicious. Both are likely to agree on the tabbouleh salad, if not the marinated lamb. Whether you go for a plate, skewer or wrap, you can be sure of one thing: You won't leave hungry. Actually, it will be your most satisfying stop of the day.

Best Ice Cream GOFER ICE CREAM

Ice cream and summertime are perfect partners. They just go together. Now, how you want your ice cream is up for debate. Some like soft serve, some a classic scoop, and some prefer their ice cream smashed deliciously between two giant cookies. We're not playing favorites; they're all good choices. Our voters also agreed that the best place to pick up this treat is at Gofer Ice Cream, which offers lots of choices— including smoothies and slushes. Enjoy this sweet way to beat the heat.

Best Burger LITTLE PUB

Little Pub has a bit of magic. Walking in from a busy day and all its worries and urgent matters and the bright summer sun, you suddenly decompress. It's like a time portal. Inside, it's all handhewn beams and ironwork, inviting you to put down your day and relax, like nothing else matters. It's just you, your friends around the table, and that glorious, juicy burger in front of you. Yes, there are endless comfortfood options on the menu (including amazing salads), but our voters zeroed in on the burgers, and for good reason. We're drawn to the "Three Hands," which is a burger topped with melted cheddar cheese, crispy fried onions, creamy mac-n-cheese and red hot buffalo sauce. It tells you a lot about the place, like you can be yourself and put your concerns aside. Just be you and have a good time. They even have live music on certain nights. Oh, and vegetarians, yes, there is a veggie burger that holds it own with roasted peppers, jack cheese and a zippy cilantro-chipotle aioli. Enjoy your escape.

Best Pizza

COLONY GRILL

Date night, kids in tow, gathering of old high-school buddies, girls' night out—it all just works at Colony Grill. It's that kind of spot, in that it works for everybody who wants to ease up and enjoy a good bite. It seems that our voters agree. They exhaulted the place to the top, and we're guessing it's because the thin-crust pies are irresistible. Yes, you can order a classic cheese with hot oil or the famous salad pizza, which is best when you really can't decide if you want pizza or salad (you get both). We're also intrigued by the Breakfast Pie, made to order with bacon or sausage, egg and cheese. We know this place knows what it's doing—it's been around since 1935, rooted in appealing to the bar crowd (pizza in this hand, beer in that one). Now, its classic pizza appeals to everyone, and draws crowds in lower-, mid-, and upper-Fairfield County. Standing out among the many pizza places is no easy feat, but to do so for decades? That is impressive, and Colony wins people over year after year.

Best Cafe/Bistro THE GRANOLA BAR

The Granola Bar has a way of balancing food and fun as well as being a place to meet up with a friend and being a grab-and-go place. Here you can start your day with a fresh cup of cappuccino or maybe a Turmeric Latte or maybe a Berry Chia smoothie (strawberries, blueberries, banana, almond milk, flax and chia), any of which are a good pick. You can also grab a breakfast burrito (with eggs, quinoa, black beans, avocado, cheese and pico) or any number of such choices all day. It serves creative sandwiches, bowls, salads and toasts. Here, crowd-pleasing favorites are leveled-up.

Best Diner OREM'S DINER

Sometimes you meet up with friends who simply don't agree on what kind of food they want. The only win here is a diner, which has tons of options—and our voters chose Orem's Diner as their favorite. It was one place lots of people agreed on. As for a plate piled with food, you have choices upon choices— wraps, sandwiches, bagels, and pancakes, omlettes, avocado toasts, and chicken souvlaki platter, jalapeño poppers and baked meatloaf. Best Desserts BE CHOCOLAT

Belgian chocolate. We thought that might get your attention. But there's more: Beligan chocolate handcrafted in small batches by a talented chocolatier, Chef Benoit. Our Best Of voters told us about their favorite place, BE Chocolat. Not only are the options in dark, milk and white chocolate delicious, but they're also beautiful. Benoit's artistry is on full display with the special collections, such as LOVE, a chocolate heart-shaped shell filled with an assortment of chocolate hearts. With special consideration to pairings, such as beer, BE Chocolat has fun. Consider the Chocolate Tasting and Pairing Class for six to twenty people, where you learn about creating and tasting the complexities of chocolate. Or perhaps you want to try the Chocolate Making Class. Or simply just stop by. The adorable shop is located in a quiet, leafy corner of Greenfield Hills. The next time your sweet tooth tries to get your attention, listen.

GREEN & TONIC

There's vegetarian, then there's plant-based kitchen. That's Green & Tonic. At this cafe, with eat-in or take-out options, you can chose from a selection of prepared options, including soups, salads, bowls and sandwiches. If we might suggest one, consider the Curry Chickpea wrap in collard greens—more filling than you might guess. Otherwise, if you want to take control, you can build your own acai bowl, choosing from such toppings as shredded coconut, granola, and chia seeds. If you're in the mood to hand over the driver's seat, try a smoothie bowl from the menu; perhaps the Coco Haze with a mix of coconut, banana, granola and cacao. They also have an impressive selection of fresh juices, like the Green Monster, with cucumber, celery, green apple, kale, ginger, romaine, spinach, lemon, parsley and spirulina. Fresh and healthy. Perhaps a side of Kelp Noodles?

Best Gourmet To Go AUX DÉLICES

Life's busy, and there's always something on the daily agenda. Cooking may have to fall to the bottom of the list sometimes, and that's a good thing. That's when locals head to Aux Délices, where it's easy to find something delicious and satisfying. The cafe has plenty of gourmet salads, soups, sandwiches, bowls and more to grab and go. Also, though, it offers specialty foods that can be delivered right to your door. Just order what you want online, and either pick them up or have them sent. Cross that off your list!

Sometimes you're thirsty, but other times you really just need a refreshment that will whisk you away to an island retreat. Best Wine Bar + Wine List BARCELONA WINE BAR

Barcelona Wine Bar is one of those places that everyone can agree on. It has something for everyone's appetite, but it also just has a welcoming way of putting one and all at ease—like a mini vacation. And when on vacation, live like a local. Here, that means ordering the table at least one charcuterie and cheese and plenty of tapas (say, Pulpo, artichoke purée and salsa verde or fava beans, mint, leeks, crispy Serrano, smoked Maldón). Also, be sure to make a selection or two from the very impressive wine list. The options are endless, so whether your favorite type is a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Noir or even a dry Sherry, you can narrow down to a few varieties to sip. If you can't decide, you can't lose with the sangria, of course. Order the table a pitcher, perhaps the Rioja wine, elderflower, citrus-infused dark rum and guava nectar. Who wouldn't agree to that?

Best Closet Organization

CALIFORNIA CLOSETS

What is real luxury? It's in the way you feel. Having an organized space is an essential element to feeling calm, comfortable and confident. The trustworthy way of moving from cluttered chaos to streamlined storage is California Closets. Our voters recognize that the custom-designed spaces bring order to their carefully curated collection of clothes, shoes, bags and the many accessories. Aside from being able to build outfits with ease, an organized closet also protects your investments—no snags, no wrinkles, no dust, no fading. It includes layout, lighting and overall look of the system, too, whether that's pure white and minimalist or something with lots of ornate, layered details. The team works with you, including a consultation, 3D digital model to review, custom creation and professional installation. You might like it so much in your bedroom that you'll look at your home office, mudroom or family room to see if they, too, need to be transformed for the better.

The busy kitchen, always packed with your family looking to grab a bite of whatever you're cooking, is better because of brilliant task lighting. The entry? It has a gentle ceiling light to welcome guests. Our readers agreed by sending in vote after vote for Chloe Winston Lighting Design. We should add "again," because this popular shop wins year after year. You might say people have seen the light about lighting options. EARTH ANIMAL

Your beloved pets might not know better, but you do. So, at Earth Animal find the wholesome pet food, treats and pet supplies that they'll love—and you can feel good about. For example, consider the No-Hide Chews that are healthy and digestible, while also taking care of your fur-baby's teeth and gums. But that's just the start. This beautiful shop is also filled with bunches of good choices and well-informed staff to help you make selections. Let's put it this way, if Fido wanted to bury his treasure anywhere but the backyard, he'd go here. It's filled with pet treasures. Yes, they also carry plenty of toys and other accessories, so he can pick out something new.

Top Dentists

The Methodology Behind the List

To create our Top Dentists list, we relied on the experts from DataJoe, a leading software and research firm. Dental practitioners were chosen based on an online peer-voting process, which was facilitated by DataJoe. The final list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals.

SELECTION PROCESS

Summary

To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a dentist’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that dentist was excluded from the list. In addition, any dentist who has been disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.

Final Note

We recognize that there are many good dentists who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding dentists in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective dentists may not appear on the list.

Disclaimers

DataJoe uses best practices and exercises great care in assembling content for this list. DataJoe does not warrant that the data contained within the list are complete or accurate. DataJoe does not assume, and hereby disclaims, any liability to any person for any loss or damage caused by errors or omissions herein whether such errors or omissions result from negligence, accident, or any other cause. Education. This way he has been able to keep up with the latest trends in orthodontic methods and technologies.

Dr. Wong is one of the original graduates of the Invisalign Master’s Program. Over the Covid-19 Pandemic, Dr. Wong completed his Align Intensive Fellowship.

In growing children and adolescents, Dr. Wong can use a variety of methods that utilizes their growth potential. This allows him to improve/correct any predetermined growth patterns or destructive oral habits that are causing the patient’s malocclusion. In adult orthodontic cases, there is no growth to help correct their malocclusions. Therefore, the orthodontic treatment goals, methods and prognosis are very different from that of a growing child. In more

complicated adult cases, the lack of growth sometimes makes it necessary to design an interdisciplinary treatment plan. This requires collaboration with the patient’s general dentist, and/or other dental specialists.

Dr. Wong’s orthodontic practice has prided itself in providing the highest quality of service for every child, adolescent or adult patient that comes to his office. He has always believed in maintaining the highest level of professional ethics, and he will only start orthodontic treatment if and when it is appropriate to do so. His capable and friendly staff has always tried to make every patient’s orthodontic treatment an enjoyable experience in a comfortable, relaxed environment.
