GOLD RUSH
One of my core memories— foundational to who I am—is when in 1984 my parents took my brother, Eric, and me to the summer Olympics in Los Angeles. I was 10 at the time and whatever indifference I may have felt about sports faded by the first notes of “Rhapsody in Blue” played on those 84 grand pianos at the opening ceremony. Yes, please, to the pageantry, the flags, the spectacle. And, oh yes, the athletes parading in, so full of potential.
We were still deep in the Cold War and since the USA had boycotted the 1980 games in Moscow there was maybe even a thicker air of anticipation. I remember the roar that erupted when the Romanian delegation—the only Eastern Bloc nation to compete that year— entered the Coliseum. It was nearly as long and certainly as loud as the sustained cheers for our American contingent.
It was, as Gen Z says, a vibe.
Few human pursuits heighten our emotions, make us feel especially alive, as sports— whether we are competing in them or screaming from the sideline. And for me the Olympics does it best.
In this issue, Beth Cooney Fitzpatrick takes us behind-the-scenes at NBC Sports, the
storytelling center of it all. She introduces us to the local talent, including on-air stars Damon Hack and Dan Hicks, who deliver the drama directly to our screens and finds out how they do it. She also reports on what it means to Stamford to have the hub headquartered here while the on-field action takes place in Paris. And Scott Thomas invites us to cheer for native son Westport-raised Olympic rower Oliver Bub who started in the sport at Saugatuck Rowing Club.
Personally, I’m excited to see UConn legends Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi dominate on the hardwood. But mostly I can’t wait to watch my son Anderson—nearly the same age I was when I was poolside to see Michael “The Albatross” Gross swim for gold—catch the Olympic bug. What moments will he recall decades from now? What dreams will the Games ignite? What a thrill.
Coverage kicks off from Paris to Stamford to the world on July 26. We’ll be watching.

“I threw a shiny black tarp on the ground, punched holes through it, popped in squash seeds and voila...slugs!”
OF VICTORY AND VEGETABLES
The middle of the growing season always reminds me of 1944, the year I fell in love with an eggplant.
I was nine years old and stuck with seeing a lot of the daughter of a war widow, a close friend of my mother. Antoinette-of-the-beautifulname-and-long-blond-curls was eleven, two heads taller, didn’t wear glasses and could do everything better than I could—ballet, piano, ice-skating, whatever. Something else: We had to collect scrap metal for the war effort. So, while Mother was busy getting somebody to pull down a cruddy old smokestack from a building down the block, we kids were seeing who could roll gum wrappers into the biggest ball of tin foil. Antoinette beat me at that, too.
But I sure topped her on one thing: Behind our apartment building we had a communal victory garden where I grew an eggplant much bigger than hers. A giant. I left it proudly hanging there until it rotted and fell to the ground.
Fast forward to Riverside, 1962. Older and wiser (supposedly), I now had a spacious back yard and a mother-in-law whose gardens in Philadelphia made the pages of national magazines. Believe me, if she had Cedars of Lebanon, they were the real deal. (A consummate traveler, she’d return with seedlings tucked into the toes of her shoes and manage to get her suitcase through Customs.)
So I listened attentively to her instruction about cultivation but soon reverted to form. For instance: After I read somewhere that plastic keeps down weeds, I threw a shiny black tarp on the ground, punched holes through it, popped in squash seeds and voila! No weeds, but zillions of slimy slugs underneath and, on top, squash vines that blackened from the bottom inch by inch, finally turning the yellow blossoms to yuck.
I planted my next vegetable garden under a dogwood by the kitchen door, where I grew
incredibly gritty lettuce (couldn’t wash it well enough), big tough string beans (couldn’t pick them fast enough) and tomatoes stunted from lack of sunshine. But I was terribly proud of my basil, until I brought a bunch to the office and was told it was mint, mint that had grown in profusion next to my basil and had taken on some of the taste.
My hats off to those who know their beans— be they gentleman farmers like Ted Ewing and Don Miller whose lush kitchen gardens once inspired me to write an article called “He’s Well Known in his Field.” Or kids like the minicontestants in a Green Fingers Garden Club show where six-year-old Evelyn submitted a clay pot of dirt sprouting one tiny carrot. “Peter Rabbit would love it!” emoted the judges.
But I’ve always had trouble with vegetables. In fact, last year I almost lost my health insurance because of them. United Health had sent a nurse to the house for its annual visit, and she put me to test. “Count backwards by fours from twenty to zero.” No problem. “See how many fruits and vegetables you can name in thirty seconds.” A-ha! So I started singing “Pushcart Serenade”, a patter song from my childhood. It has verses such as: “Oh pears, pears, we’d make a lovely pear/Peaches, peaches, the peachiest anywhere/Oh lettuce, oh lettuce get married today/Honeydew, honeydew say you’re mine to stay” –interspersed with rambling lists of produce and ending with “And we’ll raise a family—a baby lima/We’ll live on my celery.”
The nurse thought I was crazy. Didn’t crack a smile. But I must have passed, because I’m still getting bills from Mutual of Omaha.
Anyway, I have to run. I’m on my way to the Farmer’s Market to check out the cucumbers. The celeriac, too—that ugly warty frog prince of vegetables that’s so great mashed up with potatoes. See how smart I’m getting? Finally!

How NBC Sports delivers gold-worthy SUMMER OLYMPIC coverage from Stamford to the world
by beth cooney fitzpatrick
The team at NBC Sports headquarters in Stamford is gameday ready.
Sixty-five cargo containers packed with gear for the 600 reporters, anchors, producers and camera crews heading to Paris to cover the Summer Olympic Games were dispatched across the Atlantic months ago.
In Paris, the Café de L’homme, with its breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower, has been transformed from a scenic tourist dining spot, into a temporary homebase for some of the staffers who will helm Olympic coverage that starts Friday, July 26.
Back in Stamford, the iconic Olympic rings and a scaled-down replica of the Eiffel Tower adorn the entrance to the cavernous 300,000-square-foot NBC Sports complex on Blachley Road. There are Paris-themed throw pillows scattered on chairs in the lobby of the behemoth $100 million broadcasting facility based in what was once the headquarters of hair color giant Clairol. Further inside, 28 hut-style broadcast booths, some borrowed from the set of “Saturday Night Live,” are lined up end-to-end in neat rows. They will host a who’s who of athletes-turnedannouncers and veteran NBC
Sports talent, calling events happening an ocean—and several time zones—away.
Food trucks are booked and thousands of gallons of coffee ordered to caffeinate the estimated 2,000 people who will converge on the 33 acres in Stamford’s East Side that has been NBC Sports home since 2012.
For, while Paris may be the leading lady of this Summer Games, her hard-at-work supporting cast will take their places here in the city. Every Olympic moment broadcast to US audiences will pass through the Stamford campus.
“Our broadcast center is incredibly versatile. We can do play-by-play and analysis for our major events, and we’ve got all of our studio shows here. We have the flexibility and capability to bring top-notch storytelling and reporting to the masses, all under one roof in Stamford,” says Westport resident and Golf Channel host Damon Hack who will be one of the few in Paris manning afternoon coverage for his third Olympic assignment.
“For the entirety of the Olympics, the building will be buzzing.”
For more than two years Molly Solomon, the executive producer and president of NBC Olympic Production, and her team have trained for this. They’ve worked with the goal of producing round-the-clock Olympic coverage so seamless that—if all goes to carefully calculated plans—viewers won’t even notice that many of the key broadcast players will not be joining lead primetime anchor Mike Tirico near the base of the Eiffel Tower (or, at least not joining him in person).
“We’re ready,” says Solomon, as she takes a break in her Stamford office in mid-May. “With all this planning, it gets to the point

where you say, “Let’s go do this.”
Of course, “ready” comes with the caveats inherent to the unpredictable nature of live television. Because, as much as they’ve planned for this moment, there are some things Solomon and the team of producers,
from more than 200 nations. What could go wrong? “Oh, you name it,” laughs Ridgefield resident Darryl Jefferson, NBC Sports and Olympics senior vice president, engineering and technology.
But when it comes to this
make it all seem effortless, says Jefferson. “You don’t want things to be off by a beat and that’s the goal of everyone in the control room,” he says. “Even a few beats in television can feel like an eternity.”

anchors and reporters can’t control in Paris or at home.
Take the weather. There’s no control room knob that will allow producers to manipulate the forecast along the River Seine on July 26 at 7:30 p.m.
At that moment, the Opening Ceremonies is expected to begin, featuring a flotilla of 100 boats carrying the athletic delegations
first-of-its-kind Parisian Opening Ceremony, Jefferson says he’s thinking most about the 70 camera lenses NBC Sports crews will have fixed along the scenic waterway. Rain and wind could wreak havoc on plans to capture what should otherwise be a majestic moment from one of the most photogenic cities in the world. The goal is to
“The Covid-19 epidemic expedited so much, and really taught us how to do things in one place when they’re happening in another,” says Amy Rosenfeld, NBC Sports senior vice president of Olympic Production. “As much as we all might like to be in Paris, we’ve learned it isn’t necessary and that Stamford can and will be the hub and heart of the coverage.”
High-speed transcontinental technology, in this case 40,000 miles of cable transversing the Atlantic (which end-to-end is almost enough to wrap the earth twice), along with the wonders of broadcast special effects have made it possible for NBC Sports anchors and play-by-play analysts to cover live events from a series of side-by-side soundproofed booths, so modestly appointed they could pass for backyard storage sheds. Producers sit in adjoining booths with sliding windows, making it possible for them to pop their heads in (literally) to chat with their talent teams.
Dan Hicks, the Greenwich resident and veteran NBC Sports and Golf Channel anchor, will be based in Paris to cover Olympic swimming events, but notes the technological resources in Stamford means audiences don’t even notice when he’s calling a golf tournament from headquarters. “We’ve gotten so good that during the 2021 Open Championship, I had my friends and family watching and say, ‘How is Royal St. Georges? It

Summer Olympic Games coverage based here.
While an estimated 600 employees walk through the network’s doors on a typical weekday, the daily census will more than triple throughout the Games.
“All of these people need to eat and sleep,” says Rosenfeld. To accommodate them, hotels throughout Fairfield County and beyond are booked to capacity, with careful consideration given to the sleep needs of shift workers. “We try to keep crews together based on schedules, so if folks are sleeping during the day and working all night, the other half of the hotel isn’t
looks great.’ And I had to say, ‘I’m actually not there, I’m calling it from Stamford.’ ”
During the 2012 games in London, Jefferson was part of a team of 3,000 NBC Sports employees dispatched to the United Kingdom. Now, he notes, a relatively sparse 600 will travel to Paris, while 2,000 will report to work in Stamford.
“What being here does is save us the cost and expense of building an entirely new broadcast facility in Paris that we really don’t need,” Solomon says. “We’re sending the reporters, the anchors, the cameramen who really need to be at the venues. The rest we can do here.”
To get its talent and production capacity Olympics ready, Jefferson said the team began working immediately after the conclusion of the Beijing Winter Games on preparations for this summer’s 17 days of coverage showcasing 329 different medal
doing the opposite.”
Rosenfeld estimates this round-theclock workforce will consume 100,000 meals and down some 13,500 cups of coffee, along with a hefty side of stress.
Naturally, city officials are bullish on what this temporary influx of personnel means for its business community, particularly hotels and restaurants.
A contingent of food trucks will be brought to campus to add options for workers logging extra-long shifts.
“One thing we’re really focused on for these games is thinking holistically about the human beings who do all this,” Rosenfeld says, noting time differences between Stamford and Paris will disrupt the circadian rhythms of even the best sleepers. So urgent care trailers, along with on-site therapists, camped at headquarters will be part of the effort to keep everyone in good physical and
“As much as we look forward to the excitement of the Olympics, the impact of having NBC Sports presence here in Stamford during the Games is a big moment for the city too, and one we’re proud of,” says Leah Kagan, Stamford’s director of economic development.

events to be featured on multiple networks in the NBC family, including Peacock, USA, E!, the Golf Channel and CNBC.
That included growing NBC Sport’s digital network capacity from 50 to a whopping 220 gigs and adding new studios and control rooms in Stamford.
The team also held boot camps for new analysts and play-by-play announcers on the finer points of broadcasting live coverage from a remote base.
And the 65 previously mentioned cargo containers shipped from an NBC facility in Monroe, CT, to France containing pre-configured portable broadcast kits in pieces called “ribs”, were assembled and distributed to specific venues throughout the host country.
Another team and set of equipment was dispatched to Tahiti to capture Olympic surfers catching waves off the French Polynesia territory.
Telling the Story
“You’ll see it particularly downtown, where we expect to see a real impact on the restaurants and the pedestrian traffic that comes from having a major event like this in the city. So, there’s a lot of interest in making sure their team gets a warm welcome and has a good experience here.”
While the digital age has made it possible to telecast an international sporting event from far-flung continents, it will also pose some real-world challenges for producers, who need to be ratings-minded and consider their audiences’ fleeting attention spans. “We’re completely cognizant of the fact that by the time an event makes it to primetime, the results will be on everyone’s devices,” says Rosenfeld.
The network has worked overtime to plan thoughtful coverage focused on telling stories within the stories, intended to take viewers beyond the finish lines and medals podiums.
“So, if Simone Biles, for example, does a vault that no one has done before, we want to tell the audience what goes into doing that vault, and what makes it such a monumental achievement,” says
Rosenfeld. “If a story or an athlete comes out of nowhere, we want to be able to tell that story, too.”
If that means tracking down a jubilant grandmother of a surprise medalist from the Midwest for some color commentary, Stamford, once again, becomes a better place to start than Paris.
This beyond-the-results thinking extends to the upcoming Paralympic Games, which begin August 28. The network is working to elevate the stories of American athletes competing there, while bringing more expert talent with physical challenges to the forefront, says Rosenfeld, “with plans to do even more when the Games come to Los Angeles.”
“We’ve come to think of covering the events as the easy part,” says Solomon. “The rest is what we have to do to bring the athlete’s stories to life.”

The TALK OF THE TOWN from NBC Sports Olympic insiders
Darryl Jefferson Ridgefield resident and NBC Sports and Olympics senior vice president, engineering and technology
On the can’t-miss French food
There are a few places you can walk to near the Café de l’Homme (NBC Sports’ Parisian home base) where, if you can get away for a few minutes, you can get some pretty good croissants.
Ahmed Fareed the Wilton resident will serve as an afternoon studio host and in a man-about-town reporting role
On the touristy thing you’ll find him doing when he gets some downtime
What is this ‘downtime’ you speak of?! Luckily, my hosting role will take me all around the city, so I’ll see many of the landmarks and share them with everyone watching back at home. But if I leave before finding Paris’ most delicious crepe, the trip is a failure.
Kira K. Dixon reporter and studio host

On talking the talk in the City of Lights
On the Olympic sport he would most like to try
Four years of high school Spanish, followed by another two classes in college, leaves me quite prepared for an Olympics … in Barcelona. Sadly, I am 32 years too late! I have been to Paris often enough to have what I refer to as ‘existence French’— enough language skills to exist for the three weeks.
It would be a dream to be on the U.S. men’s basketball team. With one of the purest jump shots in Fairfield County, I know I could be an asset on what has become a free-flowing, high-offense sport— and what I lack in speed and youth, I make up for in experience and guile!
Karen Stupples on-course reporter for Olympic golf
On the thing she’ll leave room for in her suitcase
I don’t think the U.S. Customs folks would be happy with me because I’d try to fit a few charcuterie boards in my luggage! You can’t beat the French cheeses, meats and breads. I’m pretty sure I’ll be living on those and croque monsieur during my time in France.
Q&A with...
Molly S olomon
by beth cooney fitzpatrick // photography by kyle norton
Molly Solomon began her NBC career as a researcher for its Emmy-winning coverage of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. Following eleven years as executive producer at the Golf Channel she came full circle in 2019 to take the helm of Games coverage as executive producer and president of NBC Olympic Productions. We sat down with the sometimes Harbor Point resident to discuss the behind-the-scenes efforts she leads to bring the quest for athletic gold to viewers.
You studied International Politics at Georgetown. It seems leading Olympic Games coverage might require its own kind of global diplomacy?
Molly Solomon: Very much so! When you think about it the Olympics really is this confluence of athletics, culture, geography, history but also international relations. There are 207 delegations coming to Paris. International rivalries in sports and world issues collide, even when you hope they won’t. We work so closely with the International Olympic Committee, so all of those things require a level of diplomacy, negotiation and a lot of cooperation.
What brought you to television sports?
MS: I always knew I wanted to work in sports journalism. When I went to college,
I wanted to study something else so I would have a different perspective and broaden my horizons. In print journalism and broadcast journalism in particular, everything is very much about practical experience. So I did a lot of internships to get that experience. And now I have been here 34 years, [having worked at] no other company.
What does it mean to have NBC Sports headquartered in Stamford?
MS: Stamford has really been so supportive of this headquarters since 2012. And it’s really been the perfect place because it’s just outside of the city, but close enough that many people coming here can visit New York. Our partners can come out here because everyone wants to see this facility. It’s
been such a great home for 12 years now.
Are you living here?
MS: I lived in Connecticut from 1996 to 2012. We were in Southport, but I had my triplets in 2003 at Stamford Hospital. So, Stamford is very, very special to me. I keep a place in Harbor Point now. I love this community.
How does Paris feature in your coverage?
MS: We consider the host city the co-star alongside the athletes. And [Paris] is the ultimate lead. Not only are we there to tell the story of the athletes, but also the story of the host city. Many times, [viewers] have not been able to experience [a place]. Paris is just so aspirational and inspirational. If you’ve been there, you’ll want to enjoy it again through our content, and if you haven’t been there, there is so much to see.
What have you learned from previous Olympics coverage that informed your plans for this one?
MS: There were some lessons from the Covid pandemic. In Tokyo in 2021 and in Beijing, six months later, because there were no
spectators in the stands, we sent out these camera crews to all these different living rooms in America to make sure that we had a family reaction. We really focused on the athlete’s stories. We’re thrilled that all the stands are going to be full of fans again, but not everybody gets to travel. There are people who are part of an athlete’s story—a grandmother, an elementary school coach, a lot of people who are incredibly meaningful to a competitor. And we will continue to be focused on bringing that element into our coverage. It really adds something.
It’s probably like asking you to pick a favorite child, but is there an event you are most looking forward to?
MS: That’s a tough one, but I think it’s the 100 meters. It’s 10 seconds and it’s everything. The quiet before the gun goes off—it’s just electrifying. I don’t think you can beat the drama and then, to be crowned the fastest person in the world, it’s amazing.

D an H icks
by beth cooney fitzpatrick
NHow did you become linked with swimming?
Dan Hicks: After handling studio work for the Barcelona Games in 1992, I got a call from Dick Ebersol, the then chairman of NBC Olympics. He thought I’d be a good fit for swimming. I was incredibly excited because it was Atlanta in 1996. The anticipation is always big, but when it’s in the U.S., it’s even more amped up. I started working with Rowdy Gaines and got in his ear and asked him everything I could. The best way to immerse yourself is to ask the best that did it, like Rowdy, but he was also a seasoned broadcaster by then having done Barcelona. I leaned on him, and he carried me through ’96, and we hit it off as a team. We’re doing our eighth Olympics together. I’m lucky to work with someone who I think is the best Olympic analyst in broadcast history. I know
BC Sportscaster Dan Hicks is familiar to legions of golf and football fans for his coverage of major tournaments and college gridiron rivalries. Every four years, beginning with the 1996 Atlanta Games, he gets a poolside seat to cover Olympic swimming events. We checked in with the Greenwich resident for his insights on what to expect at this summer’s games.
those are heady words, but I will argue with anyone that he’s the best to have ever done it. He knows his x’s and o’s and the sport inside and out, but it’s the passion that sets Rowdy apart. One of my best pals in life.
There are races where the win comes down to the murky (at least to us) touch of a pool wall. How do you get it right?
DH: The number one rule— and it goes with any sport, especially in swimming— you can’t guess. We’ve got the best seat in the house.
I can see all eight lanes and all swimmers coming to the wall. I can usually tell who’s going to win, but if you’re not sure—and we’ve had races end with a margin of one one-hundredth of a second and I can’t tell who’s going to win, like many of Michael Phelps races—you must wait until you see the electronic result and the timer. You have
to be careful; you have to be right, and you cannot guess.
Is there an athlete or event you’re particularly excited about covering this year?
DH: Both men’s 200m and 400m individual medleys will likely showcase Leon Marchand, the French swimmer who trains in the U.S. He has an excellent chance to pick up four individual medals, but he can be challenged. It will be exciting. On the women’s side, a 200 IM final will likely have stars throughout featuring the U.S. and Australian swimmers. The U.S.-Aussie rivalry is slated to be bigger than it’s been because the Australian women will be very good. It will likely include the Aussies,
the U.S. and a teenage swimmer named Summer McIntosh from Canada. Of course, all eyes will be on Katie Ledecky, but she’ll have competition this time around.
Do you get time to enjoy Paris?
DH: The routine of the Olympics is ‘pool, hotel, rinse, repeat.’ The Games are a lot of fun, but they’re a lot of work and you’ve got to get dialed in. I don’t have a lot of time to enjoy the sights, but I think everyone is more excited about these Games just because it’s in Paris— a city that has an aura to it. I look forward to feeding off that.

The Tokyo Olympics (without fans) were finally held in 2021, but Bub turned his focus to competing for a spot on the ’24 team. He moved to Oakland, took a financial services job, which he also then quit to train for the U.S. team. He was named to the National Team in 2023 and competed on the Men’s 8 that finished sixth at the World Rowing Championships.
All Olympians face roadblocks and detours on their way to representing Team USA. Such is the case for Westport’s Oliver Bub whose path toward a berth on the men’s rowing team was nearly derailed in a critical stage in his development as an elite athlete. Like so many of his peers, COVID upended his hard work and best laid plans.
Happily, the 26-year-old Staples High School grad earned a spot on the U.S. team in April, when he partnered with William Bender to win the Men’s Pair at the trials in Sarasota, Fla. Their
competition at the Summer Games in Paris begins on July 28.
Olympics began at Westport’s
Bub’s journey toward the Olympics began at Westport’s Saugatuck Rowing Club, where his parents and older brothers also competed. He won the Junior Nationals with teammate Lucas Manning in 2016 and headed to Dartmouth, where he was named the team’s Freshman of the Year. When he entered his final semester of senior year his trajectory seemed bright. “It felt like all the chess pieces were moving into the right spot,’’ Bub says.
Then the global pandemic hit, and sports were canceled, the 2020 Olympics were postponed for a year and Bub—and every
Enter Vermont-native William Bender, who began at Dartmouth when Bub was headed out. He has one year of eligibility remaining but left school temporarily, to train at the California Rowing Club. Bender and Bub never rowed together at the Ivy but paired up three weeks before the trials to try and earn a spot on the U.S. team.
“Originally, I would have liked to have given it another shot with the 8,’’ Bub says. The Men’s 8 is considered the glamour event for international rowing. “It was pretty disappointing for me last summer. But we were removed from the selection pool for the 8. We felt like there would be a good opportunity for us in the pair. We pulled it out and the rest is history.”
He joins a list of rowers from
Fairfield County who have been selected to the Men’s Rowing team. Dan Walsh of Norwalk, a two-time Olympian, earned a bronze medal in the Men’s 8. He was an alternate on the 2004 Men’s 8 that won gold. Andrew Campbell and Charlie Cole of New Canaan have also represented the county in the Olympics. The ’24 team also includes Kelsey Reelick of Brookfield and Liam Corrigan of Old Lyme.
“They were definitely examples of people who had a similar upbringing to me, grew up in a similar neighborhood and did pretty well,’’ Bub says about his Fairfield County Olympic predecessors. “The earliest person I looked up to was Max MeyerBosse at Saugatuck Rowing Club. He was a few years older than me, but he had a lot of success, and he was kind of the guy that I looked up to the most just because he also competed for Saugatuck.”
The goal now is to medal in Paris. Bub thinks having a strong relationship with Bender will be advantageous. “It’s very much like a marriage because we have to depend on each other to succeed,’’ Bub says. “Sometimes it can get a little testy, but you’ve got to be able to manage that well. I’m lucky to have a partner where we can do that and execute on race day. I think we manage that relationship well and we’re excited to see how we do.” So are we.

What initially inspired you to start creating content?
Before the term “influencer” existed, I dove into content creation after my stint on “Bad Girls Club” season 10 exploded my social media following.
Now as the owner of Bombshell Studios Luxury Hair Salon, my approach has evolved beyond marketing— it’s about building genuine connections. From collaborations to building a real community, it’s not just about sharing
goodies anymore, it’s about connecting on a deeper level.

How do your readers shape your content?
For me, having a positive impact in Stamford is crucial— it’s where my family has deep roots, dating back to the 1870s. I prioritize listening to my audience for feedback and ideas to craft engaging content.
I meticulously engage with every comment, read all tagged content and analyze social media insights to understand what resonates. I also love conversing with locals, learning about
their favorite spots and backgrounds. Understanding my audience enables me to create content that fosters connection and highlights local businesses and leaders—a win-win for our vibrant community.
How do you collaborate with local organizations? I decided early on with Hey Stamford! I wanted to help amplify the messaging of local nonprofit organizations and charities that help support the community, whether it’ s through local events (like a gala or food event), workshops or meetings—I wanted to find a way to support as many as possible through my channels. By collaborating with these local organizations and actively participating, I’ m able to create content that reflects the diversity, culture and interests of Stamford’s residents.

HOWARD SAFFAN
’S BEST CIRCUS TRICK YET: BRIDGEPORT’S HARTFORD HEALTHCARE AMPHITHEATER.
by jill johnson mann
Howard Saffan has lived in Weston for 27 years but he reserves a generous wedge of his heart—and most of the hours in his day—for the nearby city of Bridgeport. Among his numerous business ventures, Saffan is the owner, developer and president of the Hartford HealthCare Amphitheater in Bridgeport. Its canopy rose from the cloud of the Covid pandemic like an emblem of optimism— crowds would gather again, waves of song from the world’s greatest musicians would roll over them, wine and craft beer and premium liquor would flow, and the region’s best food vendors would sate any appetites not already full from the experience any seat of the 5,700 provides. Never mind taking in the acts on the ginormous stage (e.g., Sting, Foo Fighters, James Taylor)—just a dizzying look up at the state-of-the-art canopy roof is worth the price of a ticket. Saffan appreciates the history of Bridgeport, and the venue— visible from I-95—displays a penchant for showmanship and a circus motif. Bridgeport’s
Before the amphitheater, what were you doing?
I was running the NY Islanders and Bridgeport Sound Tigers and overseeing the Nassau Coliseum and the Webster Bank Arena. I also own Sports Center of Connecticut in Shelton. I have a real estate development company, and we own many commercial properties throughout Fairfield County.
How did you get involved with the amphitheater?
My office at the Webster Bank Arena overlooked the baseball field. This is where the Bridgeport Bluefish played. One day I was at Michael’s restaurant with Jimmy Koplik, the president of Live Nation CT. He said, “We’re thinking of building a boutique amphitheater in Danbury.”
I said, “Why there?” He said, “There’s nowhere else.” I called him the next day and said, “I have an idea.”
When did the amphitheater open?
July 2021. The opening concert was REO [Speedwagon] and Styx. Then the Foo Fighters put us on the map. I’m not a music person whatsoever. I’m a sports guy. I leave that to Jimmy and Jeremy of Live Nation.
What are some highlights of this summer’s lineup?
We just had Neil Young. James Taylor, Tedeschi Trucks Band and Billy Strings are all coming back and requested two nights. We have Earth, Wind, and Fire and Chicago playing together. We have Cage the Elephant. There’s something for everyone.
What’s the most epic moment you have experienced at the amphitheater?
When the Foo Fighters came on stage. I didn’t understand the gravity of having a band like that until the building exploded with a volume I’d never heard.
“Greatest Showman” and onetime mayor P.T. Barnum would approve. The goal was “a boutique amphitheater…designed to wow,” and wow it does. The design incorporates the ballpark vibe (the Bluefish used to play here); the dugouts are now bars.
An industrial bent melds with the city, complete with trains chugging past just behind the parking lot (tickets include parking; ease is another theme). Add marble bathrooms throughout, numerous premium suites, and a 27,000-square-foot, back-of-house luxury residence for the bands (complete with outdoor fireplace, massage room and chef), and it’s no surprise suites are mostly sold out and bands are clamoring to book multiple nights.
What inspired you?
I was fortunate to own a window and door company, Bishop Manufacturing, in Bridgeport. At a young age, I had the opportunity to sell it. This is my giveback to Bridgeport. I love Bridgeport. I believe in Bridgeport.
What was your dream as you began the project?
The dream was to host twenty concerts a year and be a significant community provider. We have done that and then some. This season we will have 50-plus concerts and host fourteen graduations and two dozen community events.
Which concert or event are you most looking forward to this summer?
Pizza Fest on August 11! We will have over 40 pizza vendors as well as craft beer vendors.
What has been the most challenging aspect of this project?
Building the venue. The budget started at $18 million and ballooned to $50 million, due in part to my insatiable urge to create an experience for our customers. We have marble bathrooms, cupholders in each seat, a star suite, a who’s who of food trucks. There are even twinkle lights, a tribute to my dad, who used to take me to the San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy.
500 Broad St, Bridgeport, CT hartfordhealthcareamp.com
Why did you settle in Weston?
I love Connecticut. I grew up on Long Island. After graduating from Brooklyn Law School, I swore I’d never move back to Long Island, and Connecticut was very special.
’Tis the season for eating al fresco Here are 10 of our favorite spots.
BY ELIZABETH KEYSER
It's
not just the weather that makes Stamford’s al fresco dining scene so hot. Thanks to the popular StreEATeries program, sidewalk seating spills out onto the streets, transforming our urban landscape into a culinary carnival. And that’s just the beginning. Down by the shore, a water taxi shuttles between the bustling boardwalks and inviting patios of Harbor Landing and Point that serve up feasts for the eyes—and the belly. Lush garden terraces beckon weekend brunchers to the back roads of North Stamford and south near the beach in Shippan. And for those craving a taste of the high life, rooftop venues offer sunset views that wow.
Hungry yet? Good, because we’ve curated a tasty selection of outdoor restaurants that capture the essence of Stamford’s diverse culinary landscape. From sizzling American grills to vibrant Latin fusion, zesty Mexican flavors to classic French fare, there’s something to satisfy all kinds of cravings.
Live music fills the fresh air at larger venues, setting the stage for impromptu dancing.
July and August are prime time to order up the perfect sides of sun and sunset. Sure, the official outdoor dining season runs from Memorial to Labor Day, but that doesn’t stop us seeking fresh environs even on briskier nights through the fall. With restaurants rolling out retractable windows and firing up heat lamps on cooler evenings, there’s no excuse not to savor stepping out.
1 The Americano
The newest restaurant from the owners of Kouzina and Tomato Tomato, The Americano has 50 outdoor seats extending onto Main Street. Guests share the burrata plate with prosciutto and heirloom tomatoes, while the chef steams mussels in butter-wine sauce, and jazzes up the Caesar with romaine and kale, crisp apples and a parmesan frico. Entrees range from Italian pastas to steaks. The Salmon Poele, served with basil beurre blanc and tomato caper relish, is trending. On a recent Sunday afternoon, the eight-ounce brasserie burger, topped with house pickles, apple wood bacon and melting rich brie, landed on loads of tables. Everybody looked pleased. The drinks menu focuses on craft cocktails starting with the spot’s namesake, a blend of Campari, sweet vermouth and club soda. Vodka-based Raspberry Thyme is for lovers of sweet drinks, as are the “zero proof” mocktails, including a Mango Mule sweetened with honey syrup. Pretty-as-a-picture cocktails in hues of mango, raspberry and passion fruit deserve a spot on your ’gram grid.
2 Brennan’s by the Beach
A skipping stone’s throw from West Beach, this cozy pub has been around forever, and during the past 11 years it’s been femaleowned (Eamir O’Neill Carpenter) and run by an enthusiastic staff. In spring and summer, the fresh air and shelter of a shady old tree draws regulars from the bar to the fenced-in patio, which seats around 40. Customers aren’t the only ones raving about the warm buttered lobster roll—staff members come in on their day off and pay full price for it. Seasonal specials include littlenecks steamed in white wine and garlic. Burgers are served on a choice of Portuguese, pretzel or potato rolls. Rotating drafts of craft beers vie with spring cocktails like the blueberry lemon drop martini. Weekday happy hour runs from four to six p.m., featuring bar bites like potato skins and Philly Cheese egg rolls. The most ordered dish at weekend brunch is the spicy chorizo bowl, but crab cake eggs benny are a fave, too. Brennan’s patio has another draw, a summer occupant: Oscar the turtle, Brennan’s mascot. Kids love to watch him chomp on lettuce.
82 Iroquois Rd. @brennans_shippan
3 Chez Vous
Bedford Street is filled with many outdoor cafes, busy places with aisles of seats. It’s a fun scene, but for those looking for a setting more intime, Chez Vous is that charming bistro in the stone building on the corner of Bedford and Spring. It has just eight tables seating 12 beneath the awning, but the open accordion doors bring the outdoors into the Provencal-hued dining room. American French chef-owner Erik James Erlichson has decades of experience cooking classical French cuisine, and he changes Chez Vous’s menu with the seasons. The classics remain, reminding guests of their visits to Europe: escargot a la Bourguignonne, homemade terrine de foie gras, and sole meuniére, steak frites, warm French lentils, and salads of fresh organic greens with poached eggs and lardons. This is the occasion to enjoy a glass (or bottle) of French wine. Ask your server for suggestions.
4
Cilantro
Cilantro’s rooftop patio is a hidden gem in the middle of downtown. Up a flight of stairs from busy Atlantic Street, the patio seats 66, and is outfitted with umbrellas, greenery and heat lamps for early and late season unpredictable weather. The Latin-fusion restaurant has had a devoted following since it opened in 2015, serving vibrant dishes inspired by classics from South and Central America and the Caribbean. Pollo saltado is a lighter version of the homey Peruvian-Chinese mash-up and swaps French fries for fried sweet plantain. The chef embraces flavor, sautéing gambas with ajillo in white wine sauce, and poaching them for a zesty Costa Rican ceviche. The paella and ropa vieja are also favorites. The bartender mixes up rosé sangrias with peach and raspberry juices, and he shakes the house margarita with tequila reposado. Happy hour features beef skewers, croquettas and guacamole. The friendly staff are at the ready for your night out. 60
5 Crab Shell
No wonder Crab Shell at Harbor Landing has been around for 30 years: waterside location, family-friendly casual vibe, and a crowd-pleasing menu of classic seafood, grilled, roasted, baked and fried. Crab Shell serves lunch and dinner at The Shack, a tented dockside bar and patio, where guests can start with a choice of New England or Crab Shell’s Red Clam Chowder. Friends share orders of hot spiced “peel and eat” shrimp with a cold brew on draft or a bottle of Bud. Rum cocktails—three-rum punch, mojitos, dark ‘n stormies and dockside frozen cocktails—are specialties. Grilled salmon and swordfish are guest favorites, plain or with a choice of indulgent buttery sauces. For vegetarians, the stir-fry vegetables are seasoned in pineapple teriyaki sauce. Of course, there are filets and sirloins. With bands playing dance music Thursday through Sunday nights, Crab Shell is an instant summer party. P.S.: There’s plenty of parking and 11 boat slips ready to be reserved.
SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE
6 Farmhouse at the Crossroads
A drive through the winding back roads of North Stamford, past green woods and crumbling stone walls, to an old red tavern feels like a mini-vacation, especially when you enter the long fenced garden with tables for 120 guests. Water and fire features, a gazebo and live music make summer evenings feel like an event. The local landmark got an interior rehab when new owners Victor Kapiti and Tony Vesta took over a couple of years ago, and the expansive menu reaches across Italy with house pastas and pizzas; it touches on Asian with spring rolls and shrimp and noodle salad, and lands on updated contemporary classics like Maine Mussels with citrus sea salt and steak frites with smoked pepper butter. Our favorite strawberry-arugula salad is sweet and bitter, with paper-thin slices of fennel, cubes of cucumber, scattered with hazelnuts and crumbled goat cheese. Squash blossoms are stuffed with vegan ricotta and tofu. Seared branzino, perched on a bed of cauliflower-fennel puree, is surrounded by green olives, scallions and tomatoes in a white white lemon-caper sauce. Brunch standouts include cattleman’s eggs, a version of shakshuka with braised brisket. Can’t choose among the four Bloodys—Mary, Mario, Mia, Mariah? You can try a flight. (We’re partial to the Mia with horseradish-infused vodka, clamato and pickle juice with a celery salt rim.)
299 Long Ridge Rd. //// @farmhouseatthecrossroads
7 Mexicue
Cinco de Mayo is akin to the Super Bowl at Harbor Point star Mexicue, the Mexican, Tex-Mex and American South blend. That’s when crowds pack the downstairs patio for tacos filled with Cajun shrimp and mango salsa, Nashville hot chicken, or masa-encrusted cod with cabbage slaw and pickled onions. The vibe on the patio, which seats 34, is relaxed, family- and dog-friendly. But you can really lift your spirits at another of Mexicue’s outdoor seating spaces, a more intimate rooftop terrace that seats 24. It’s low key, with killer views of the sun setting over the city. Mexicue’s relaxed funky vibe shines through in the colorful chairs up-cycled from discarded automobiles. The bar offers a large selection of good sipping tequilas and mescals. “Margs” are the most popular summer drink, and the spicy smoky margarita is a standout, hitting every note: fruity, smoky, sweet and spicy. Mexicue has locations in New York City and in Westport as well.

CONTEST BEST BARTENDER
8 Prime: American Kitchen
& Bar
Unabashedly upscale, Prime, a glass-walled steakhouse featuring sushi and seafood, has waterfront seating for 16 along the boardwalk that feels like being dockside at a yacht club and a tented cabana bar seating 50, all with views of pleasure craft against the backdrop of Harbor Point. Inside the restaurant, retractable windows on the harbor side allow the 60 indoor guests to feel like they’re just about dining al fresco, too. The most popular summer cocktails are the Babylon Express, a refreshing blend of cucumber vodka, pineapple and lime juice, and the jalapeño margarita. Espresso martini, surprise, knows no season. While the scent of grilling dry-aged steaks wafts through the fresh air, guests slurp oysters on the half-shell and bite into the sushi fav Stamford Landing Roll. Those with fewer dollars for discretionary spending can enjoy the two-course weekday Power Lunch ($29). The trip across Long Island Sound to Huntington LI, takes 35 minutes— where boaters can try out the other Prime.
9 Table 104
Table 104’s sunny brick patio is a beloved outdoor dining spot on Long Ridge. Shaded by overhead canvas sails and decorated with pots of flowers, it seats up to 50. The contemporary Italian menu presents pastas and Neapolitan pizzas. Vegetarian verde pizza is layered with arugula pesto and seasonal vegetables like asparagus, cauliflower and leeks. Other favorites for the season include pasta tossed with clams, mussels and calamari steamed in wine sauce, and seared salmon with warm lentil salad, vegetables and tapenade. An Aperol spritz or a glass of Prosecco are drinks that taste especially delish in summer. And for the table, a bottle of Tuscan (Sienna to be precise) Vernaccia di San Gimignano Cavaliere feels right with any dish. Sharing a board of imported sopressata, prosciutto San Daniele, truffle pecorino and local mozzarella, with grissini (Italian breadsticks) and signature house-blistered red grapes is a perfect way to spend time with loved ones. The expanded brunch menu includes prosciutto and goat cheese frittatas, eggs Benedict and banana-blueberry pancakes. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

10 The Wheel at the Village
On a canal across from a salt marsh, The Wheel’s spacious patio seats up to 100 at dining tables, high tops and in a relaxed lounge grouping. The New American menu ranges across pizzas, pastas, burgers, raw bar, seafood and salads, and entrees like grilled halibut and flat iron steak—everyone in your group can find something to enjoy. We like to share a bowl of whipped eggplant sprinkled with sesame seeds (hinting at the tahini inside the dip) and warm, puffy pita breads. The Seafood Tower makes a grand statement: oysters, tuna tartare, shrimp cocktail and smoked swordfish dip. We’re also partial to the zesty shrimp ceviche. Weekend brunch features banana buttermilk bread, crab and avocado toast, and vegetarian salad bowls of quinoa and kale with avocado, soy-marinated egg, pickled mushrooms and sweet, earthy beets. DIY mimosas bring out the mixologists at the table as guests choose from a selection of fresh juices. The Wheel has three retractable garage doors that bring the outdoors into the industrial chic setting of solid wood floor and glitzy chandeliers. Bands play Wednesdays and Thursdays in the evenings. Up to 11 boats can dock in front of The Wheel at Star Point Marina.

Fifty Years and Grow ing
SELF-MADE MOGUL BILL RAVEIS CHARTS HIS OWN HISTORY, FROM A TINY OFFICE ATOP A GROCERY STORE TO MORE THAN $20 BILLION IN ANNUAL SALES FOR WILLIAM RAVEIS REALTY.
by carol leonetti dannhauser
Two dozen William Raveis employees sip and mingle on the deck of their boss’s sprawling Greenfield Hill home in Fairfield. They’ve gathered for lunch in the founder's honor, thanking him for organizing the Raveis company’s 50th anniversary party at Mohegan Sun earlier this year. More than 1,500 real estate agents and employees showed up for the twoday bash, training by day and dancing by night, with 77-year-old Bill Raveis leading the conga line.
Here at Applewood, Raveis’ home, the real estate mogul leads a handful of guests through a living room and into his Revolutionary War room. Glass display cases highlight powder
horns with engraved scrimshaw. Rifles, pistols, muskets and spears adorn the walls, alongside bayonetes, spontoons, war clubs. Raveis lingers by portraits on parchment of the Founding Fathers.
“It’s amazing how this country began,” says Raveis, tanned and sockless, in jeans, sportcoat, crisp white shirt and leather loafers. “These people didn’t like the way they were being treated so they started their own company, took on the biggest power that existed and fought with everything they had. They were the greatest entrepreneurs in the world.”
After Raveis points out a few treasures—Paul Revere’s wallet; George Washington’s vest; a
blood-stained, 13-starred flag from Baltimore— the gathering disperses, most guests returning to William Raveis real estate, mortgage and insurance headquarters in Shelton. But half a dozen remain. They gather in Raveis’ sitting room, strategizing for another battle.
In March, the National Association of Realtors agreed in an antitrust suit to eliminate the 6% sales commission traditionally paid to agents selling a home. Historically, those agents shared that commission with a buyer’s agent. Soon, as agents lower fees to compete for business, buyers might be paying for an agent’s help.
“What everybody else does, I couldn’t care less,” says Raveis. He and his soldiers are planning a counteroffensive, which includes arming agents with materials for buyers touting his agents’ worth.
Raveis settles himself between his marketing director—Princeton-, Harvard- and Stanfordeducated Lisa Carpenter—and two Yorkshire terriers snoozing beside him in a baby carriage. He reviews new brochures and coos, “We’re the only ones who have this. Nobody else comes close.”
Raveis has spent a lifetime inventing, pivoting, reinventing. In 1974, he rented a 9-by7-foot room over a grocery store in downtown Fairfield and set out to launch his real estate empire. He was 27 years old, a married father of two and had just quit a tech job in New York City, dismayed by the attention lauded onto a hire from Harvard who had little interest in the Bridgeport-bred computer wiz but happily took credit for Raveis’ accomplishments. Raveis had barely made it through high school, willed and worked his way through college and hadn’t yet learned that severe dyslexia was what hampered his ability to see things as everyone else did. He credits dyslexia with forcing him to devise inventive strategies to master material.
When he opened up shop, Raveis had a desk, a phone and an office reachable by walking through a doctor’s office. What he didn’t have: experience selling houses. “I’m looking out the window talking to myself, saying ‘How am I going to build a business?’ Then I realize, if I hire an agent, they make money and I make money. They make more money and I make more money. If I help them make more money we all win.”
Raveis believed that an agent was his customer, not a buyer or seller, a mindset
unique to real estate companies at the time. Even so, “None of the big agents wanted to come over and be with me because I was some kid from Bridgeport.”
He knew what it meant to be an outsider and he hired five agents who, he believed, were ignored because they were female and Jewish. After he hiked their commissions and referral fees, the established guys who ran the local multiple listing services didn’t like it, Raveis says, and refused to list Raveis properties. They invited him to lunch one day to deliver a message. “They said, you can’t do this, you can’t do that. If you don’t go according to our rules, we’ll run you out of town. I said, ‘the heck with you.’ ”
At this point in the conversation, Raveis reminisces about his upbringing, a favorite topic during interviews as well as in the two books he’s written. Raveis’ dad was a bricklayer,
and mom made lipstick in a factory. They encouraged their son to get what he wanted by rising to meet, rather than backing down from, a challenge; by working hard, by treating people kindly. Raveis vowed to treat his colleagues as family. Those five agents worked with Raveis for more than 20 years.
His little company has grown to 4,500 agents in 145 branches from Florida to Maine, boasting $20 billion in sales. The family-run firm (sons Ryan and Chris are company co-presidents) finances mortgages and sells insurance. Last year, industry analysts Inman awarded Raveis the Top Brokerage in the United States.
And the company continues to grow. When Raveis moved to Florida eight years ago, he mentioned to locals that he might like to hang a shingle there. “A guy from the No. 1 firm in Naples laughed. He said to me that no outsider has ever made it here,” Raveis recalls during an interview on Zoom. He’s calling from his house in Port Royal, where the average home costs $20 million and a current Raveis listing goes for $88 million. That guy didn’t know he was laying down a gauntlet. Today, Raveis says, “We’re the No. 1 firm here, and they’re No. 3.”

Best Service // TONY’S AT THE J HOUSE
It’s no surpise that the restaurant known for its namesake founder’s (above) penchant for making the rounds to personally greet guests—whether newly arrived NYC transplants or boldfaced named celebs— would get the attention of our readers who voted Tony’s at the J House this year’s Best Service winner. The entrance sign reads “Right this way, my friend” and is the welcoming mantra reflected through every detail of the always-popular steakhouse that is so much more than just a steakhouse.

// TAVERN AT GRAYBARNS
By clinching both Intimate Venue and Date Night, it seems like perennial favorite Tavern at GrayBarns might be this year’s choice for romantic evenings out. Local ingredients star on hyperlocal (he’s a lifelong Fairfield County resident) Chef Joseph Wabshinak’s New American menu. For truly special occasions take full advantage of the transported-to-the-countryside vibe and book an overnight in the Inn. There, the Glazer family (Marsha and daughter Nikki above) welcomes you to the property they’ve owned since 2017. Their discerning redesign transformed the old Silvermine Tavern into the epitome of quiet luxury, all warmth and refinement.

Best New Restaurant // THE BENJAMIN
This Ridgefield newcomer has been welcoming a steady stream of diners from all over Fairfield and Westchester counties since it opened in June 2023. Named for Benjamin Franklin with a wink at his role as the first ambassador to France, the restaurant reflects that transatlantic connection in its approach. The little gem Caesar salad (above) and roasted half chicken (below) are top reader choices from the tightly curated, seasonal menu. Executive Chef (and serendipitiously monikered) Benjamin Traver joined from NYC’s The Modern and Cafe Boulud, while Pastry Chef Melissa Knauer hails from Litchfield bakery fave Arethusa a Mano.

Japanese // SAKURA
Readers’ Picks
Our readers say arigato to Sakura, the Westport staple, for offering up both kid-friendly hibachi and a more elevated dining experience that parents look forward to. Dining options range from sushi to hibachi, from sukiyaki to shabu shabu. There’s also an array of options to park yourself for the night from belly up to the bar (sushi or otherwise) to outdoors on the patio, from the main dining room to more intimate tatami rooms. Few area restaurants have the staying power of this Japanese standout, in business since 1982. On the occasion of its opening the New York Times called it “winning.”
More than 40 years later, we still agree.
Best Bagels // POPUP BAGELS
From the Gold Coast to the West Coast, PopUp Bagels keeps on, well, popping up. While we were all messing around with sourdough starter kits during the pandemic, Adam Goldberg (left) was busy perfecting a new recipe and sharing his crispy-on-the-ouside, soft-on-the-inside bagels with friends from his backyard in Westport. A few short years later, the homegrown carb-heaven company keeps on growing from its flash sale and coveted subscriptions roots to include permanent walk-in locations and a nationwide following. Purists delight in the no-novelty philosophy (nary a rainbow nor blueberry—or even a sliced—bagel in the bunch.) They make the most exquisite vehicle for schmears. Scallion and plain cream cheese are always on offer alongside rotating flavors, including dill pickle and cheeseball, as well as butters like like chimichurri and hot honey.
Asian/Asian Fusion + Bowls + Noodle Bar/Noodles
// MECHA NOODLE BAR
Winning Best Asian Fusion is your sign to go beyond steaming bowls of pho and ramen and explore the rest of the menu at youthful chainlet Mecha Noodle Bar.
Edamame is seasoned with garlic confit, rosemary, sage and sea salt. Pork and shrimp dumplings in spicy red chili oil are a top order, but we’re also suckers for the roasted mushroom dumplings. Of course, no one is disputing Mecha’s noodle-primacy.
Beef Noodle is a bowl of brothless rice noodles tossed to perfection in a sweet, umami-rich sauce that gets raves.
Best Hot Dogs // SUPER DUPER WEENIE
Being deep into baseball season brings to mind the staple ballpark handheld—a sizzling frank on a bun. This summer we’ll skip the sweltering heat and steep ticket price at Yankee stadium thank you very much and enjoy a top-notch split-and-grilled Super Duper Weenie instead. And for the laziest of dog days this season, when even an I-95 drive just up to Fairfield seems too much to bear, we’ll gather the neighbors and bring the savory treats to us in one of SDW’s on-the-go food trucks. The housemade relishes are a tightly guarded secret and nearly steal the show in the reader favorite “New Englander” topped with sauerkraut, bacon, mustard and fresh chopped onion. Over the years the menu expanded to include not just fresh cut fries but also sausage and steak sandwiches, chicken nuggets and more.
Best Ice Cream // SUNNY DAES
With six locations across the Gold Coast, it’s no wonder that Sunny Daes has fans acoss the County voting enthusiastically “thumbs up” for the family-owned joint’s homemade cool treats. Sergio Keskin opened the first Sunny Daes in 1999 in Stamford’s Shippan neighborhood. Since then the iconic, cheery pink-and-green shop has expanded to include outposts in Fairfield, Trumbull, Westport and its newest location in Norwalk in 2023. Toddlers enjoy the multitude of flavors and toppings as much as climbing aboard the friendly cows while big kids make it a must-stop on baseball Saturdays and soccer Sundays. The shop offers a wide variety of flavors of ice cream, froyo and gelatos in cups and cones and other frozen treats like ice cream sandwiches, cakes and shakes. And, of course, sundaes like its playful name indicates. Seasonal offerings have included summer sorbets like pomegranate with fresh fruit, pumpkin ice cream for fall, eggnog for winter.

PICK
Darien + Rowayton
editor Eileen Murphy shares her ode to Aux Délices
for the perfect accompaniment to our readers’ top pick for best salads—Aux Délices savory quiches, which are delicious and substantial. Stop in for a premade fave or call ahead for a custom pick. Summer lunches, solved.
and sandwiches packed and ready keep the bell on an Aux Délices shop door ringing all day. And on a busy night there might not be something I appreciate more than the many grab-and-go options on offer. The chicken salad sandwich and Bam Bam Chicken are on heavy rotation at our house as of late.
I can remember Aux Délices hosts uber-popular kids cooking classes on Sunday afternoons and summer camps in their Stamford kitchen. Grownups can sharpen their skills too at private group outings perfect for showers or corporate get-togethers.
Brunch + Cafe/Bistro // TERRAIN CAFE
Is there a Fairfield County spot that embraces and celebrates Mother Nature in its warm, elevated design quite like Terrain Cafe? We don’t think so. And neither do our readers. The dining-in-a-greenhouse vibe pervades everything here, from the leafy green (but actually) decor to the, of course, seasonally inpired menu that reflects what’s ripe from local farmers. We’re loving brunch standouts like the foodie-heaven brioche French toast with rum-soaked stone fruit and vanilla maple mascarpone sauce (above) and the sweet figgy-jammy grilled gruyere with apple and basil on sourdough.
Best Coffee Shop // COFFEE FOR GOOD
A place to get a perfect cup of joe and also support a worthy mission? Sign us up. Greenwich’s Coffee for Good is both an inviting gathering place with top java and a training ground for locals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In summer we’re all about the chilled caffeinated goodness of a cold brew or a sweet strawberry smoothie. We take ours to go with a muffin or scone. The shop offers our readers’ choice of favorite housewarming gifts—beans with name nods to spots around town like Greenwich Avenue Zest and Mianus Morning Dew.

Best Vegetarian // THE LIME
Best Bakery // WAVE HILL BREADS
Given how sought-after bread from Wave Hill is from Brooklyn to Litchfield to Madison and back, we’re so happy to claim the master baker as our own Gold Coast gem. Owners Angela and Tim Topi know slow food is the best food and apply that know-how to everything they do. It all adds up to lighter, more flavorful, easyon-the-belly breads that will make you feel like you’re in France, bite by bite. Build the perfect sandwich with any of the pan loaf choices ranging from brioche to rye or pick up a pizza romana (in summertime our readers are partial to the zucchini and lemon) and call it a night. And a Best of the Gold Coast bakery doesn’t just win on bread alone. Wave Hill’s attention to every yummy detail extends to its perfectly curated pastry selection as well as cookies, scones and muffins.
Way ahead of the natural foods trend, the no-frills Norwalk mainstay has been serving up standout whole food dishes since 1979. The lengthy menu features plenty of vegetarian and vegan alternatives to the typical salad options offered at other spots that feature “V” prominently. Tofu croquettes baked in Thai orange sauce will make you rethink your opinion of bean curd. Meanwhile zucchini loaf made with carrots, sesame and sunflower seeds, cheddar cheese and tahini feels like a secret superfood. There’s plenty of seating at tables with checkerboard tablecloths inside but don’t sleep on the delivery option, which is surprisingly quick across towns. So, the next time you’re scrambling for a family meal and don’t want to feed kids yet another slice of greasy pizza, squeeze all the juice out of the Lime.
Best Caterer // MARCIA SELDEN CATERING & EVENTS
Forget the flowers, the band or the theme, according to our readers, an event isn’t a Best of Gold Coast event unless it’s a Marcia Selden event. The namesake matriarch of the more-than-four-decades-young catering biz makes every affair a family affair leading her team alongside son Jeffrey and daughter Robin (above). Selden’s origin story sounds almost like it began as a dare. Decades ago, when asked if she knew a good caterer for a small wedding, the then-jewelry designer harnessed her culinary and entertaining twin passions to take on the party herself. The rest is the stuff of local history. A record of the who’s who and what happened when throughout Fairfield County could be told through the dishes she’s served at the very best parties up and down the Gold Coast. This summer, win big with Tic Tac Toe Crudo (above) and get guests smiling with bite-sized lobster rolls and chips (below.) Readers’

And, of course, everything in between.

JAMON Y QUESO
trip to actual Barcelona, one thing united our diverse family group: ham and cheese, please. Now, whenever we’re at an impasse stateside a table at Barcelona and order an embarrassing amount of cured and aged savory goodness. There’s nearly two dozen on the menu and I’m here to say every single one deserves a try.
for dinner, we book
wine list features is Adios Vinos, a farewell tour to some vintage gems that for one reason or another can’t be replaced with new cases. The rotating, limited list is offered at half price.
Nothing transports
me back to Catalonia quite like clocking out early and savoring al fresco snacks during Barcelona’s 4 p.m – 6 p.m. happy hour. I’m a sucker for the Marcona almonds and steak tartare paired with an Estrella Galicia.
Best Seafood Market // FJORD
True story: The lobster loving teenage daughter of one of our editors recently stumbled upon the knowledge of subpar standards that pervade most of the seafood industry. “I’m done,” she declared. Enter Fjord Fish Market, the retail post so trusted to responsibly source seafood that they won over not just our readers but also perhaps a tougher crowd—the skeptical teen. Integrity and quality are the names of the game here. And with multiple Gold Coast locations and online ordering too, the only way to ensure a fresher catch is to drop a line yourself.

Best Martinis + Steaks
// WASHINGTON PRIME
Peanut butter and jelly. Bacon and eggs. There’s no arguing with food duos so perfect they’re iconic. Our savvy readers paired two Bests—Martinis and Steaks—from Washington Prime because, when in the resto’s capable hands, the two are similarly tops. We take their signature ’tini hot ’n’ dirty stye (bird’s eye chile stuffed olive and brine) with a New York strip. How about you?
Best Mobile Bar // BAKED AND SAUCED
Is there anything cuter and more Insta-worthy than a vintage Airstream pulled up to your next party? Probably not. Since 2015, Baked and Sauced has served booze and baked goods to thousands of guests up and down the Gold Coast, and our readers have taken notice. Book “Annie”, a 22-foot-long 1968 Safari, or “Rosie”, a 20-foot-long Globetrotter for your next shower/wedding/birthday celebration and cue the smiles. For summer celebrations we like to have a big batch of the watermelon tequila punch on hand and in colder climes we’re hooked on the bourbon apple cider. It’s impossible not to love the desserts, too. Both “sauced” (with alcohol) and “unsauced” (without) cupcakes and push pops are so mouthwatering it’s hard to choose what to serve. Right this minute we’re partial to the Elvis, an unsauced banana cake with peanut butter frosting topped with bacon and Strawberry Bubbly, a sauced Champagne cake with strawberry buttercream. Let the good times roll!

// DARIEN SPORT SHOP
Perhaps chief among the many reasons we love Darien Sport Shop is for the place it holds in our hearts as top sartorial problem solver. How many Gold Coast residents have found themselves just hours from an event despairing at the choices staring back from a well-worn closet?
A quick trip to the Post Road mainstay is all that's needed to look on trend and feel ready to party.
Eileen Murphy, editor of New Canaan, Darien + Rowayton magazine, calls it the “go-to shop for everything—the GOAT of downtown.” Our readers agree.

PICK
Wilton magazine editor Samantha Yanks speaks luxe by way of Mitchells and Richards
Westport and Greenwich shops are all about me picking up things I need,
like special seasonal looks,
and some things I don’t need but definitely crave, like a bauble from their high-octane jewelry cases filled with pieces from covetable local designers like Genevieve Lau and James Banks.
home delivery and an unparalleled team are just three reasons they are my first-stop destinations for high style.
Best Eyewear // WARBY PARKER
Warby Parker launched as an online-only biz 14 years ago to redress one problem—glasses are too expensive. Since then the place for peepers has expanded to more than 200 brick-and-mortars nationwide. How lucky are we that three call the Gold Coast home? The latest outpost in Darien Commons joins favorites on Greenwich Avenue and at the Sono Collection in offering approachable high style at reasonable price points. New from the Trace Series “Florian” and “Beauford” (above), along with best-sellers “Lorena” and “Durand” have really caught our readers’ eye.
OCCASIONS
of pushing the envelope
led to their recent Kwiat diamond takeover, showcasing $10 million of haute jewelry pieces at the Near & Far Aid event that truly wowed shoppers.
Best New Shop // PENFIELD COLLECTIVE
New to Westport last year but with roots in Fairfield, Penfield Collective continues to grow its loyal fanbase season after season. Founder Vanessa Lewis (right) spent more than a decade in merchandising, including a stint at Coach, before conceiving of the laid-back luxury shop. Penfield Collective truly shines in its array of chic staples like LBDs and jeans that are anything but basic. This summer readers report they’re living for the one-piece swimsuit from Fisch under a “Frieda” shirt dress by Bird & Knoll. And for high style way up high, on flights out of town, we suggest a Suzie Kondi terry two-piece set paired with hoops from Jennifer Fisher.

The family-owned garden and nursery stalwart—reliably serving the city and beyond since 1872—prides itself on being as much a community center as an expert in all things plants. Rarely a week goes by that Designs by Lee isn’t hosting an event for locals to connect. Recent classes included a two-hour evening “Succulent Driftwood” workshop, where attendees walked away with handmade arrangements of mosses and florals on a wood base, and the family favorite Summer Garden Party featuring a variety of vendors, food trucks and fun activities (follow @designsbyleeinc to keep up with it all).

Founders (above) senior aesthetic provider Laura Palmisano, laser exp ert Melissa Knudson, senior aesthetic provider Diana Palmisano and master injector Lauren Abramowitz have 65 years experience among them. They take a full-face approach to having fresh, clear skin through a range of treatments, including facials, microneedling, peels, injectables and more. Best way to start is with a complimentary 15-minute consult.
Best Day Spa + Massage + Women’s Styling/Salon // NOELLE SPA
Today, day spas seem de rigeuer for the well-heeled set, but it wasn't always the case. Sixty-four years ago, when she was a partner at an upscale salon on High Ridge, Noel de Caprio dreamt up a "Day of Beauty" package that combined traditional hair and nail services with then-new facial and massage treaments. It was a smash success, even garnering notice in the New York Times. Noelle Spa was born. Just a minute further up the road from where she first conceived it, Noelle now has a staff of nearly three dozen who expertly delivery services ranging from facials to massages to waxing. More than one new mom has praised the Pregnancy Massage, calling it the thing that got them through the last trimeser. And avid tennis players extol the benefits of the Sports Massage after a long day at play on the court.

Top Dentists
To create our Top Dentists directory, we utilized the experts at topDentists™, which has more than seventy years in combined experience compiling peer-review referral guides in the legal, dental and medical fields. The research company, which started topDentists in 2007, uses a thorough selection process to recognize dentists who are chosen by other dental professionals.
INTRODUCTION
This list is excerpted from the 2024 topDentists™ list, a database which includes listings of more than 210 dentists and specialists in the Fairfield County area. The list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals by their peers. The complete database is available at usatopdentists.com. For more information, call 706-364-0853; write P.O. Box 970, Augusta, GA 30903 or visit usatopdentists.com.
SELECTION PROCESS
“If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”
This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results.
The nomination pool of dentists consists of all dentists listed online with the American Dental Association as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees.
Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received and status in various dental academies can play a factor in our decision.
Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board. Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.
Of course, there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’s inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists. While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere

Linhart Dentistry, with over 40 years of expertise in Midtown Manhattan, has expanded into Greenwich!
“We are old-world service and charm in a modern, stateof-the-art environment”, says Dr. Jan Linhart and Dr. Zachary Linhart, “our history is deeply rooted in New York City, but our story began in Europe, and our patients are from all over the world. We always knew Greenwich would be the next point of expansion, and we are excited to have established our new office in Cos Cob, right in the middle of town.”
In 1979, Dr. Jan Linhart opened the doors to Linhart Dentistry in NYC’s iconic Helmsley Building, steps from Grand Central Terminal. There, Dr. Linhart built a most impressive, full-service dental practice, from fullmouth cosmetic cases to comprehensive general care.

She received national recognition when she won the Harry Sicher First Research Essay Award and presented her research at the annual session of the American Association of Orthodontics
NY Magazine referred to the practice as “One-Stop Dental Perfection!”
In 2010, Dr. Zachary Linhart joined the practice after following in his father’s footsteps of attending Bowdoin College and NYU College of Dentistry. He added his expertise in implantology, and echoing his father, an eye for cosmetic dentistry. Their NYC staff of over 25 consists of top in-house specialists including a Periodontist (gum and implant specialist), Endodontist (Root Canal Specialist), Orthodontist (braces and Invisalign specialist) as well as hygienists, assistants and administrative staff - many of whom have been there for more than twenty years!
It’s clear both doctors have the skill and the talent, and their unparalleled abilities to create the most stunning, natural smiles is at the foundation of their world-renowned

Dr. Bina continues to devote a few days a week to her New York City practice. She and husband, Dr. Michael Koch and children reside in Greenwich, Connecticut where they love being part of the Greenwich community.
In her free time, she enjoys traveling (when she can), skiing, and loves ballroom dancing.
Our orthodontic mission, here at Dr. Bina Park Orthodontics, is to provide excellent orthodontic care in a warm and caring environment where the focus is on creating amazing, functional smiles. We are excited to meet you.
reputations as leaders in cosmetic and restorative family dentistry.
When Dr. Zachary Linhart moved to Greenwich in 2016 with his young family, he was returning to the area, having grown up in nearby Purchase, NY and graduating from RCDS. At this point, the plan to extend their NYC practice was set in motion. It wasn’t until the Covid pandemic that Dr. Zachary Linhart fully realized the positive impact a Greenwich practice would have for current Linhart Dentistry patients, as well as other local residents.
“Our added location in this beautiful, suburban environment has provided more, and easier opportunities to keep up with regular dental care. We are so pleased to be offering our services in Greenwich, and look forward to welcoming the community to our new office!”

His extensive education includes completion of studies at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Committed to community involvement, Dr. Kesselman generously donates his time and resources to sponsor local athletics, community service, and theater initiatives, reflecting his dedication to both professional excellence and community well-being.
Family Friendly Practice
Our top priority is to provide our “family” of patients with the highest quality orthodontic care in a warm, welcoming environment where they feel valued and cared for. We strive to create a friendly atmosphere where patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their visits.
Technology Driven Treatment
Education. This way he has been able to keep up with the latest trends in orthodontic methods and technologies.
Dr. Wong is one of the original graduates of the Invisalign Master’s Program. Over the Covid-19 Pandemic, Dr. Wong completed his Align Intensive Fellowship.
In growing children and adolescents, Dr. Wong can use a variety of methods that utilizes their growth potential. This allows him to improve/correct any predetermined growth patterns or destructive oral habits that are causing the patient’s malocclusion. In adult orthodontic cases, there is no growth to help correct their malocclusions. Therefore, the orthodontic treatment goals, methods and prognosis are very different from that of a growing child. In more
complicated adult cases, the lack of growth sometimes makes it necessary to design an interdisciplinary treatment plan. This requires collaboration with the patient’s general dentist, and/or other dental specialists.
Dr. Wong’s orthodontic practice has prided itself in providing the highest quality of service for every child, adolescent or adult patient that comes to his office. He has always believed in maintaining the highest level of professional ethics, and he will only start orthodontic treatment if and when it is appropriate to do so. His capable and friendly staff has always tried to make every patient’s orthodontic treatment an enjoyable experience in a comfortable, relaxed environment.

RISE AND SHINE
“Every day a million miracles begin at sunrise,” said novelist Eric Jerome Dickey. Beloved Rogers International School fourth grade teacher Cara Denison agrees. Born and raised in Stamford, she began documenting Cove Island Park, just down the street from where she grew up, in the (very) early hours following her mother’s sudden death from a stroke in 2019. She posts her meditative pictures daily on her Instagram account (@carad1016). Accumulated, they feel like a journal, an account of a place, of the light, of the moments, the minutes and the hopes that punctuate our days. Here, she gifts us an August morning stunner, glittering gold.
