OF ALL KINDS OF VALENTINES
“There’s another kind of valentine— the kind you’ll hold dear forever. It’s something special that someone has said to you.”
my judgment so much that she promised to love any man I decided to marry. (And she certainly followed through when I settled on Jack Moffly.) Barbara King told me that in reference to her teenage granddaughter Abby Huth, a friend observed: “She’s the granddaughter everyone wishes they had.” Some come out of the mouths of babes. When all her four kids were little and Kim Marie Galloway found herself in a perpetual state of exhaustion, one of them wrote her this poem: “Roses are red/Violets are blue/You’re our sleepy mommy/but we love you.” Monika Heimbold was reading Greenwich Time with three-year-old granddaughter Calliope sitting on her lap, when the little girl pointed to a picture of a very young woman with a very big smile, looked up at her nd said: “That’s YOU!” Then there was the New Year’s Day long ago when we Mofflys—five-year-old Audrey, nineyear-old Jonathan, Jack and me—were dining on trays in front of the TV watching yet another football game. When out of the blue, our daughter, who we’d adopted as an infant, said: “Hey, Mommy, why did my real mom give me away?” All eyes left the screen and turned to me. “Probably because she wasn’t married,” I replied. “Like Roberta?” she asked, Roberta being an unwed mother who babysat for us. “Yup, like Roberta,” I answered. “But she wanted you to have a Daddy and big brother, too—a whole family.” “Oh,” said Audrey, thoughtfully. “I’d like to meet her someday so I could thank her for that.” What is the nicest thing someone has ever said to you? Think back to that feel-good moment. As the Beatles sang: “All You Need Is Love.” All year round. Right on, Chaps. W

here are valentines and valentines. Some are the lacy paper kind, some shot out over the internet, some oozing with poetic sentiment, others raunchy, comic or cruel. Some come with a rose or a chocolate heart, still others sealed with a kiss. They mean sore feet for the letter carrier and hope for the smitten single. But one way or another they say: “It’s February 14 and I’m thinking of you.” Most historians agree that it all began in third-century Rome with Valentinus, a priest who refused to renounce his Christianity and was beheaded on February 14, probably year 270. During his imprisonment, he reportedly befriended the blind daughter of his jail keeper and miraculously restored her sight, putting him on the road to sainthood. Just before his death, he wrote the girl a farewell note signed “from your Valentine.” February 14 was the day before the Roman Feast of Lupercalia, celebrating fertility and spring, and the day of a Roman festival in honor of Juno, goddess of marriage. In eighteen-century England, after drawing lots on Valentine’s eve, a young swain would pin the lady’s name on his sleeve and wear it around town—thus “he wears his heart on his sleeve.” And on it went, over the Atlantic to the New World, until this February Hallmark expects a whopping 145 million valentines to crisscross America. And that doesn’t include those exchanged by kids in their classrooms or God knows how many winging through cyberspace. Valentine’s Day has become the second biggest holiday for greeting cards after Christmas. But there’s another kind of valentine—the kind you’ll hold dear forever. It’s something special that someone has said to you. My mother once told me that she respected

Samantha Yanks: Kat, it’s so much fun to be reunited for our second interview and to discuss your debut book, Big Bites: Wholesome, Comforting Recipes That Are Big on Flavor, Nourishment, and Fun: A Cookbook, (Rodale Books). Congratulations. What is the inspiration behind it?
the restrictive sense but in an abundant sense where we return to seasonal simplicity with a modern twist. I waited years to write a cookbook because I wanted to feel like I was adding to the conversation, and not just writing a book to write a book. It became clear to me that many home cooks want to cook and eat better, not go on a diet, but just know how to whip up creative, reliable recipes that are nutritionally dense. This is a book for all of us who have felt left behind by the

SY: You are so open in your journey with food on all of your platforms. With over 2.3M followers, what really went viral are your “Hungry Lady Salads” on TikTok. Tell us how those came about? KA: I’d love to say that the first Hungry Lady Salad was a carefully executed strategy, but the truth

buzz is that I casually called my Tuscan Kale Salad with Lemon Tahini Vinaigrette (one of the fan favorite salads that is also in my cookbook) a Hungry Lady Salad because it is a true meal-in-a-bowl, and will leave you feeling satisfied. The response to that recipe video was so strong — I think it has 12 million views on social media at this point — that I recognized there was a real need for this kind of approach. I threw out my entire content plan for the rest of January 2020 and said “OK, looks like we are making this a series.” SY: I have had the pleasure of working with Katie Couric several times, and I remember I saw her on Instagram saying was making one of your Hungry Lady Salads and I sent it to you because it was so much fun to see. Then she ended up writing a blurb for your book. How did that come about?
SY: Your goal is to have fun, bring joy to cooking and empower hungry readers with solutions and ideas versus restriction or deprivation. How did that become the Kat Can Cook mission?
uninspired, and what to eat when you love food and also want to feel great. SY: From weeknight meals to Sunday suppers and breakfast ideas to Hungry Lady Salads, what can we expect of the 110 recipes in your first cookbook.
KA: I saw a vacancy in the world of “healthy” food. There are plenty of places to go if someone is strictly vegan, keto, paleo and the like, but not many places to go if you don’t fit into a box and simply want to eat well. I also saw us veering further and further away from classic techniques, and wanted to invite a return to them in a joyful, non-intimidating way. Ultimately, I am here to solve the problem of what to make when you’re

KA: It is central to my recipe development and my personal style of eating. I let what is happening outside my kitchen dictate what is happening inside my kitchen. Nothing can inspire me like going to a farmer’s market or a farm and speaking with the growers and purveyors. The storytelling, wisdom, and passion is contagious. I always tell people, if you want to know about food, don’t ask a chef. Ask a farmer.

KA: That was a pretty great day. When I saw she had been following me and shared the recipe I saw an alignment and opportunity, so I reached out to her over DMs. You miss all the shots you don’t take, and when I see a window, I jump. I was thrilled she was open to receiving my book transcript, and she was incredibly kind and gracious to support it with an endorsement. What an honor. SY: Your recipes really appeal to home cooks looking for healthy but comforting and abundant ideas. This first book amasses 110 simple, nourishing, mostly gluten-free recipes that are big on flavor and reimagine the concept of “healthy food.” How did you pick? KA: That’s exactly it, Samantha! I wanted this book to be a total meal solution for readers … a book they could turn to again and again, whether they needed a quick family dinner on a Tuesday, a reliable gluten-free bread recipe, or a celebration cake for a birthday. I spent time rethinking familiar dishes and flavors in a new way, as I often do, from French Deviled Eggs that are brightened with a lemony yogurt sauce and capers or The Ultimate Meatloaf with Horseradish and Caramelized Onions. I love coming up with creative takes on familiar concepts.
local farmers, growers and producers. How does seasonality and nature weave into your recipes, given the bounty we have here?

hen The Triple S sandwich shop owner Clay Cooper—a man esteemed and feared—is found dead, every member of his staff is a suspect, including Charlie Hudson, an autistic seventeenyear-old, who’s hell-bent on leaving her economically depressed small town of Sawyer, PA, as soon as she graduates high school. But before she can go anywhere, Charlie is forced to protect herself and her friends from the danger still lingering in their intertwined community. Based on Walker’s No. 1 bestselling audiobook, American Girl, and told through the eyes of an enthralling protagonist, this pulsepounding novel about a teenage girl tangled in the crosshairs of a bewildering case will have you turning the pages into the wee hours of the morning.
llen Walsh is shocked when she receives a note that reads: “People have to learn there are consequences, Ellen. And I’m going to teach you that lesson.” As a teacher, mother, wife, and stand-up citizen, she can’t imagine who sent it to her or what she’s done to deserve it. Sure, she’s told a white lie on occasion, but she’s never deliberately hurt anyone. She’s just been going about her life raising a teenager and two toddlers, job-hunting, and renovating her dream house: Until five bad deeds come to haunt her and she’s desperate to figure out who’s determined to destroy her reputation and her future. In this captivating tale of revenge, loyalty, and secrets, the tension is palpable.
here’s nothing as good as the rich gone bad. That’s the message in Hawkins’ convoluted gothic suspense novel about North Carolina’s richest and most notorious heiress, Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore. After Ruby’s death, her family’s estate and nine-figure fortune are left to her adopted son, Camden. Yet surprisingly, he wants little to do with either. He’d prefer to enjoy his life as an English teacher in Colorado with his wife Jules, who’s eager to escape her own muddled past. Ten years later, Camden is summoned in the wake of his uncle’s death, which brings him and Jules back into the family fold. And questions begin to arise about Ruby’s past, leaving Jules resolved to convince Cam to claim his rightful fortune.
achel Krall, the truecrime podcaster protagonist from Goldin’s The Night Swim, is back to search for Maddison Logan a hot young influencer, who vanishes hours after going to see suspected serial killer Terence Bailey, just before his release from prison. Is her disappearance connected? And why does Maddison seem to only exist on social media, with no family or friends to speak of? Via a fake Instagram account, Rachel attends the popular influencer conference, BuzzCon, undercover, which reveals a sphere of fierce rivalry that may have turned lethal. When police find a woman’s body with a tattoo of a snake eating its tail—the same as the one seen on Bailey’s hand—the possibility that Terence has an accomplice becomes very real.
arvard law student, Madison Rivera has landed her dream internship—working for Judge Kathryn Conroy— in this electrifying cat-and-mouse novel about class, ambition, family ties and murder. When her disturbed younger brother Danny is arrested and Judge Conroy is assigned to his case, things begin to unravel. Danny accuses the judge of corruption, and Madison’s search for answers sucks her into Conroy’s glamorous world. That’s when she starts to wonder if Conroy is a mentor, a victim or a criminal. And why is somebody trying to kill her? Unclear as to whether she’s being used as a pawn, Madison carefully circles Conroy. The question is: Will one of them end up dead?

F
ounded in 2016, Destination Haus is the collective artistic expression of the Vellante family, a mother-daughter-daughter trio of artists, designers, and curators. Their newest store at 56 Riverside Avenue in Westport is a home décor dreamscape. Imagine walking into a space expertly curated with unique pieces from around the world…an eclectic mash-up both personal and intimate. The first time I saw the store, I had tears in my eyes…it is design perfection. From mother Laureen’s gorgeous coastal photography, which hangs in homes across the East Coast, to daughter Kendra’s décor finds from around the world, to daughter Carlyn’s art curation and art consulting services, Destination Haus is an immersive
retail-adventure like no other. In 2018, in Montauk, NY, the Vellante women expanded their business into the event planning space. Inspired by the beachside landscape, they set out to meld their vision of global style with the environment to create customized dining experiences. By incorporating the elements, exquisite textiles, and one-of-a-kind tabletop, they turn every occasion into a highly stylized celebration. The attention to detail is impeccable. From the perfect flowers to the serveware and lighting, the beautiful atmosphere they decorate is all-encompassing. Their event service is now available in Fairfield County. From intimate dinners at your home to large scale events like weddings,

their fully customizable events will delight your guests and transport them to the any destination you desire. Additionally, this winter they are hosting a ticketed dinner series at their Westport store in partnership with local chefs such as Daniel Kim from Ten Homakase. The design of each dinner will be inspired by their travels, with the goal of exposing you to the sights, sounds and tastes of exotic destinations. Why go to dinner at the same restaurant every night when you can dine in Morocco one night and in Italy the next? The dinners combine the Vellantes' love of creative direction, collaboration, food, and design, culminating in a sensory and culinary experience you won’t soon forget. The in-store dinners only accommodate 20-30 guests, so be sure to follow their Instagram @destination.haus and/or sign up for their newsletter on their website destinationhaus.com for details. Speaking the Language To save you a Google search, we break down some of the LATEST TRENDS IN TRAVEL We spoke with Amanda Frasier, president of ratings for Forbes Travel Guide, who tells us, “We see business travelers emphasizing work-life balance and making a business trip an extended travel experience.” The pandemic gave us Zoom and the ability to work remotely. As a result, more Americans are taking their vacation days, even if they have to occasionally work. Several governments worldwide have created Digital Nomad Visas. Simply put, these allow
Canal share? They are surprising bedfellows in the travel trends for the coming year.
The most significant trend over the last three years— dealing with uncertainty—is here to stay. But the good news is that there are plenty of new adventures awaiting you. First, there's some lingo you'll need to know. New travel experiences include “bleisure” (blending business and leisure travel), “set-jetting” (think White Lotus season two in Sicily) and “collabs” (fashion, art and hotels all in bed together). Here’s a quick rundown to help you feel extra hip at the next cocktail party.
you to work remotely in a country without paying local taxes for a specified period of time. But you need to do more than just show up with your laptop and call yourself a digital nomad. The application process varies by country. For example, you can live in Antigua for two years and work your way around the islands' 365 beaches. To qualify, you must own a “location independent business” and/or work remotely for a company based outside Antigua and Barbuda. You need to earn at least $50,000 annually and
have a travel/health insurance plan.
Se t-J e t t i n g According to a trend report by Expedia, 39 percent of global travelers have booked trips based on films or streamed shows. To wit, Sicily was overrun last summer by Jennifer Coolidge wannabes. If you haven’t watched White Lotus, this is your cue to finally stream it. Millennials and Gen Z also rely on social media to plan travel in a way their parents don’t. According to a report by the World Travel

ig Linens has a new home! For 20 years, the linens and décor boutique has been Westport’s premiere location for luxury bedding, towels, and table linens. Now, the iconic shop has made its way to Church Lane. The idyllic brick lane houses many beloved 06880 businesses, including Sorelle Gallery and Pink Sumo Sushi, and offers the kind of quiet charm that draws people from all over the state to downtown Westport. Fig Linens and Home’s relocation has added another gem to its ranks. The new Church Lane location offers Fig Linens and Home the exciting opportunity to expand its custom offerings. Carlin van Noppen, Fig’s founder, told Westport Magazine: "We are so thrilled about the space for a design center in our new store. Our range of custom bedding and bath linens has so much room to grow in the spacious location and the team is excited to work on more bespoke designs and monograms in this space. Even better, the new shop is full to the brim with natural light, perfect for comparing fabric samples and paint chips to help you find the perfect match for your home." She continued: "We can’t wait to welcome new and familiar faces to Fig on Church Lane!" Anyone who has visited Fig over the past two decades knows the shop is a joy. The cozy,

Special orders and custom bedding are Fig Linens and Home’s bread and butter, with thousands of fabric samples offering seemingly endless home textile options. Furthermore, Fig Linens and Home is design-led, meaning that you can expect much more than white sheets in this linen shop. The shelves are full of bright colors and stylish patterns from celebrated designers, including John Robshaw and Ryan Studio. Best of all, it’s a one-stop shop, where you can source everything from down comforters to duvets, and sleep pillows to silk masks all within the homey walls. Despite the big names on the shelves, Fig
Linens and Home retains its charming, brickand-mortar feel. A visit to the shop is likely to land you in conversation with Carlin Van Noppen, the owner and brains behind the brand. With her quick wit, sharp eye and Southern drawl, Carlin offers unparalleled expertise in the industry. A Fairfield County local for over 20 years, she has worked with many of the area’s best interior designers and homeowners to decorate beautiful homes in Westport and beyond. Local Artisans Are Globally Influenced 1 // SANT M With two kids on the Upper East Side, Min Santandrea was constantly finding herself having to pack an extra pair of shoes in her already packed purse just because of uncomfortable heels. Season after season she searched for comfortable shoes and only ever found geriatric collections or obscure brands that were unreasonably expensive. With her retail background working with Chanel, Prada, Uniqlo and Walmart, and an MBA from Columbia Business School, in 2018, she decided to create her own shoe brand, Sant M.

Sant M, comes from the “M” in Min and Sant means “saint.” “Saint means to comfort and ease your pain ’cause it’s what saints do. So it went perfectly with the ethos of the brand,” Santandrea explained. Sant M creates luxury shoes designed for comfort. “I wanted something that was timeless and easy, that women didn’t have to think about in the morning and say, ‘what kind of day am I gonna have?’’ Weston resident Santandrea said. designed to walk with you. Sant M consulted a podiatrist, who co-taught shoe designing at Parsons School of Design, for the correct ergonomic features on the shoes. In Italy, they have three factories they work with, with their main heel factory in Napoli. Leopoldo Giordano, who has designed for Marc Jacobs, Chloé, Fendi, Golden Goose and more, designs for Sant M. Sant M has a range of shoes from heels, flats, indoor/outdoor shoes and boots. The Mary Jane collection, featured in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar U.S., are traditional Venetian shoes that were originally created hundreds of years ago. 2 // LALAA KANANI In 2019 Laura Lewis created Lalaa Kanani after traveling the world for a year with her husband and five children. They spent a month in Europe, six months in India, traveled throughout southeast Asia, rented an RV for a month and explored the north and south islands of New Zealand, spent 10 days in Japan, a week in Hawaii, then landed in California and went on a cross-country road trip. Lalaa Kanani is a brand that carries women’s clothing, accessories, tableware (napkins, placemats, tablecloths and table runners), and a curated collection of vintage kantha quilts (hand-stitched, hand-patched from repurposed vintage saris). The story behind the brand name is “Kanani” is the name of an elderly Hawaiian native, whom they met at Waimea Falls during their trip around the world. “I was drawn to her immediately. Aunty Kanani, as she is called on the island, immediately opened her world up to us, inviting us to come to her home after only having met us. Kanani means ‘beautiful,’ and in naming my creative project after Aunty Kanani, I hoped to emulate her warmth, love and soulfulness into everything I do and in every interaction I have with my customers,” Lewis shared. “Lala is a Hindi word that I heard over and over again when I started working with my team of female
block-printers. I asked what it meant, and one of the women told me it is a term of respect, a form of address, equivalent to the word ‘Mr.’ in English. I jokingly pointed to myself, and said ‘Lala!’ and we giggled and they have called me that ever since. (I am not even sure they know my real name!)” Lewis joked. Lewis designs all of the clothing and textiles. The products are produced by small family businesses in Jaipur, India. Each product is printed by hand with carved wooden blocks, a method known as the generations-old handicraft of hand block printing. Production for the spring line has just started. “My daughter, Nima, who attended Parsons, is designing a small collection that will be available through the site in the coming months,” Lewis said. Lewis works alone most of the time in her studio so it is very special when she gets to interact with customers face-to-face. “A major part of the growth of the business has been through word of mouth, and I have my loyal customers to thank for that. It provides an opportunity for me to show my work and to share my experience working in an ancient craft, and I receive real time feedback about the products. I genuinely love connecting with people, whether it’s the first time we’ve met or the tenth time you’ve seen me around.” Website: lalaakanani.com Instagram: lalaakanani this photo: Model Nima Lewis is wearing the Josette Maxi Dress, $98. Samantha Yanks: Shoshanna, your incredible business turned 25 in 2023 tell us a bit about how you started and where the business is now and what is on the horizon for 2024. Shoshanna Gruss: Thank you! I can’t believe we are 25 years old! It’s older than how old I was when I started the brand! Wild! I started SHOSHANNA as a niche business to address the body types that were being ignored by the fashion world, and it turned out to be not so niche! My goal was to create beautiful, celebratory dresses that included all body types in the 0-16 range. I still have that core group of loyal customers who tell me that they can only fit into our brand. What’s really wild is that many of my original customers are still wearing it and now buying it for their daughters, too!

ucked away in a cheerful setting in downtown Westport lies a sunny slice of Italy: Il Pastaficio. Owned by husband-and-wife team Federico Perandin and Anissa Nouhi, who opened their first outpost in Cos Cob, it is both pasta shop and restaurant. It’s a unique concept where locals can buy freshly made pastas, sauces, prepared dishes, pastries, and imported dry goods, or dine in—lunch or dinner—for some of the finest food in town prepared by chefs who have trained at Michelinstarred restaurants in Italy. The menu features classic fare with a modern twist, like a seductively tender and unexpectedly pink vitello tonnato or perfectly orb-like polpette di melanzane served with Parmesan chips and basil powder. The consistently delicious cuisine is elevated and stylish in its clarity. Pasta, of course, at the heart of it. “At the core of Pastaficio is to make a product with the highestquality of ingredients possible,” explains Federico, “and ingredients from Italy.” Flour selection is key to making artisan pasta. Take a bite of any of Il Pastaficio’s signature pastas, and you’ll taste the difference. “We buy our semolina for three times the price of regular flour,” says Federico. “It’s a huge investment to buy the highest quality,” which is finer than American flour in both quality and texture. “Everything we make is handmade with no preservatives,” adds Anissa. “Very easy to find in Italy. A destination for a true taste of Italy, Il Pastaficio offers a calendar of special events, pre-fixe dinners, and pasta classes. On Tuesdays they host privately booked pasta classes for up to 20 people, while monthly they offer a pasta class open to the public for up to 12 people. They also host monthly thematic multicourse dinners with wine pairings from regions such as Toscana or Veneto. “All dishes that you would not expect,” says Anissa of these distinctive dinners, “but only the locals would know.” Il Pastaficio’s commitment to excellence and hospitality is truly infectious. “When you are here you are in Italy without having to take a flight.” Buon appetito and buon viaggio!
Il Pastaficio is at 135 Post Road East in Westport. Shop is open seven days a week, dine-in is open every day except Tuesdays. Operating hours: Sunday to Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

THIS RECIPE LEADS TO ROME Bucatini alla Gricia
Gricia, an eggless carbonara, is a classic Roman pasta whose sophistication rests in its simplicity. Il Pastaficio’s recipe is creamy with a kick thanks to the magical marriage of pasta water and cheese speckled with toasted black pepper and crispy guanciale. Make this dish for a romantic dinner for two, or double or triple the quantities for a larger crowd. All the ingredients can be purchased at Il Pastaficio!

above: Il Pastaficio serves housemade Italian treats like lemon meringue pie, cannoli and chocolate “sausage.”
2. Cut the guanciale into thin strips. Place in a sauté pan over low heat until crisped and all fat has rendered. Remove the guanciale from the pan and set aside. Transfer the fat to a mixing bowl and set aside. Return the guanciale to the pan and set aside. 3. Add the pecorino romano, the Tuscan pecorino, and a few pinches of freshly ground pepper to the rendered guanciale fat along with a little cooking water from the pasta pot, about 2-3 tablespoons. Try to use very little water as the cheese mixture needs to be thick. Set aside. 4. Cook the fresh bucatini for 1 minute. Remove the pasta directly from the water and toss it with the guanciale in the sauté pan. Combine the cheese mixture with the pasta, tossing well to coat. You should have a very creamy finish.

ON FIRE!
BORN IN BROOKLYN, BASED IN WESTPORT, THE HUSBAND AND WIFE DUO BEHIND SEÑOR LECHUGA HOT SAUCES A R E H O T , H O T , H O T ! by samantha yanks
left: Shot in Iceland, The Collection includes the original 3 Señor Lechuga flavors
Samantha Yanks: Tell us a bit about what inspired you two to launch Señor Lechuga Hot Sauces? Nico Lechuga: I originally made the sauce for myself. There were tons of hot sauces, and yet I still couldn’t find what I wanted. A lot of hot sauce has a ton of heat but it completely overpowers the flavor, and a lot has incredible flavor but totally lacks heat. Nearly all have artificial ingredients, preservatives,
emulsifying agents, added sugar, tons of sodium. I wanted a ton of fire — and a ton of flavor — and all-natural recipes. I wanted a clean hot sauce with premium ingredients you could actually taste with enough heat to break a sweat. Lauren Cosenza: This isn’t so simple. It was like A Beautiful Mind in our kitchen in Williamsburg. Excel charts. Scales. Funnels. Ingredients. Ratios.
Samples. But he did it. Originally it was three flavors. We lived at the base of McCarren Park and we entertained a lot. And we would always have the hot sauce out at our rooftop BBQs. And everyone always said, “If you sold this, I’d buy it.” And finally one day, Nico turned to me on the couch, and I was very pregnant with our first child at the time, and he was like, I’m gonna see what it would take to sell it. And I was like, oh a passion project, sure, great.

SY: There must have been a lot of work on the backend and developing the product I love the branding! NL: There are things you don’t think about but have to get done on the backend. So I did things like get a food handlers license, food protection certificate, a better process control school degree from an online university, a schedule process for each flavor, all of that. And then one night, Lauren said, so what is the logo going to be, and the labels, the packaging, what about your brand colors and voice, you’re going to need a website and an Instagram. You need to build a brand. Lauren’s background is in beauty and fashion, and I said, that’s why I have you. LC: I had my own business, and I was about to be a first-time mom so my plate was full but I never imagined the momentum would accelerate so quickly. So I was in. We had products we could really stand behind and branding that told the story, through imagery and words, of why that product was special.
probably the most popular of the three from the feedback we get.
out. One thing we both noticed is that everyone here seems to truly love it here.
LC: Nico is like a culinary gangster, and I’m like a college dorm chef. I use the basics, I keep it simple but tasty. And the adobo on something as plain as avocado toast is insane. The adobo spice blends are magic.
What do you love about Westport? NL: I’m from California and one thing I missed being in the city was being able to wake up and go to the beach or just feel connected to nature. Here I love grabbing coffees and bagels and hitting a beach with our kids early in the morning.
SY: You’re recent Westport transplants. What inspired the move? LC: We had a list of things we were looking for as it became more and more obvious that the family life we wanted would not be in the city. Things like exceptional schools, proximity to the beach, accessibility to the city, a downtown with great restaurants and shops and energy, a place with culture and arts, a sense of community. And over and over, Westport kept popping up. Neither of us had been here before so we got in the car and drove to check it
Share with us a bit about the Lords of the Fallen collaboration? NL: Our most recent collaboration is with the newly released Lords of the Fallen action-RPG video game. The collection has two hot sauces that were inspired by the two parallel and interconnected worlds within the game. From the ingredients we chose to their colors to the branding elements.
The timing was really tight on this one so based on when the bottles arrived and our kids drop-offs and pickups that day, Lauren had just one hour to shoot the collaboration. If you look at our Instagram, you can see the whole launch was shot at Compo Beach. And it worked and actually matched the brand book perfectly. The feedback on the new flavors has also been really great. One has Carolina Reapers and the other has Ghost Peppers, so they are hot but what really stands out is each flavor. Where can we shop your products? LC: You can find us on our website or online at Amazon, Food52, Nordstrom and more. We’re carried at Four Forks and have many more local partnerships on the horizon. Follow us @senorlechugahotsauce for our latest updates.
How many varieties are there? NL: So far, we’ve brought to market 14 hot sauces, three spice blends, one DIY hot sauce kit and one salsa macha. Our hot sauces are a mix between our core collection and limited edition or permanent collaborations with brand partners. We use the world’s most expensive Panamanian geisha coffee in one of our collab sauces and we use black Périgord winter truffles in another. Each flavor is unique. We also collaborate on dishes with restaurants that want to feature our hot sauce on menu items. Most popular? NL: The original .001 hot sauce from our core line and our .5326 collab hot sauce with Half Face Blades and Joe Rogan are our two most popular flavors. Tell us about the Spice Blends as well? NL: The Spice Blends come in a set of three and can be used as a seasoning or a rub. The habanero and chipotle pack some heat but the adobo is pure flavor. And it’s

The federal SECURE Act 2.0, however, offers a new option. Beginning in 2024, beneficiaries of 529 plans can transfer up to $35,000 from their 529 plan to their own Roth IRA without paying penalties or taxes. Once in the Roth, that money can continue to grow tax-free. There are a few caveats, says Fitzgerald, who holds 529 accounts for each of his two children. For example, the plan has to have been open for at least 15 years, transfers are subject to Roth annual contribution limits (up to $7,000 in 2024) and beneficiaries must have earned income at least equal to the amount transferred.

SPECIAL PROMOTION*
Estate Planning and Charitable Giving Charitable giving is a long-standing tradition in the United States and can be an important component of an estate plan as a means of giving back to the community and leaving behind an enduring philanthropic legacy. As Barbara Bush once noted, “giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our mind to the unexplained worlds occupied by the needs of others.” While there are many personal and altruistic reasons for giving, many affluent donors also are motivated by the tax savings that can be associated with a charitable gift.
Tax Incentives for Charitable Giving
Helping Affluent Individuals and Families
The Internal Revenue Code provides tax incentives to encourage charitable giving. Generally, the tax incentives are more favorable if a charitable gift is made (i) during the donor’s lifetime (rather than at death), (ii) to a public charity (rather than a private foundation), and (iii) with highly appreciated property held long-term (rather than cash).
Cummings & Lockwood’s private clients attorneys can assist individuals and families with all aspects of their charitable giving and help them to meet their philanthropic goals as part of the estate and tax planning process.
Following are some of the key tax advantages associated with philanthropic giving:
400
6107
In assisting our clients, we pay special attention to the client’s overall plan to be sure that the particular charitable strategy achieves the client’s intended goals for the gift. This may take the form of a simple one-time gift during lifetime or at death or a more complex charitable strategy.
• Income Tax: A donor may be entitled to an income tax charitable deduction made to a qualified charity (an organization recognized as tax-exempt in the pursuit of philanthropic, non-profit or civic activities) as long as the donor does not receive anything in return. There are annual caps that limit the total amount of charitable contribution deductions.
Our trusts and estates attorneys can help clients in the creation, implementation, monitoring and administration of various charitable gifts and structures, such as charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts and private foundations, as well as in structuring pledges and gifts to public charities.
• Estate Tax: Generally, contributions to organizations that qualify for the income tax deduction also qualify for the federal estate tax charitable deduction. For estate tax purposes, there are no limitations on the amount of the deduction for qualifying contributions.

ANNE GREENBERG AND ANNE EPSTEIN TOAST THEIR BIRTHDAYS / Osprey Barns
A Fête For Two
A
nne Greenberg and Anne Salvatore Epstein are longtime best friends who share a passion for celebrating their April birthdays together. This year’s festivities were held at the picturesque home, lovingly referred to as “Osprey Barns,” where guests were treated to an evening of great food, music and laughter. To make their celebration even more special, the duo encouraged guests to make donations to The MoCA Gives Back Initiative. The funds raised will help support MoCA Westport’s efforts to offer equitable access and meaningful arts experiences to those who are under-resourced in our community and beyond. »

Samantha Yanks: Tell us a bit about how the two of you met. Joshua Lander: We met during the COVID lockdown in May 2020. An ironic story of two Gen-Xers meeting via social media. Restaurateur Bill Taibe commented on one of Marysol’s Instagram posts. It was a casual referral to the Yankees-Mets rivalry, and it was sort of funny, so I gave it a simple laughing emoji. I guess she started following me at that point. One day, I received a random DM that literally read, “Who are you?” From that point, it was an immediate connection. We exchanged some banter and then talked on the phone the next day for two hours; very old-school! She cooked me dinner two days later and we have been inseparable ever since. Marysol has multiple talents including being a talented cook. Marysol Castro: Three months into the COVID lockdown, I had resigned myself to dying a spinster at 46. The daily routine was: set up my home tv studio, do live television while my children were attempting to learn on their laptops, shut off the tv camera, homeschool, go for a run, eat dinner with my sister and her family, drink two bottles of wine, watch the cousins make TikTok videos, go to sleep. Wash, rinse, repeat. On May 24, 2020, my friend Bill Taibe commented on an IG post about my working for the New York Mets. A laughing emoji proceeded Bill’s comment. I took a deep dive and when I could not figure out who this “Lander Sport + Health Sciences” guy was, I slid into his DM: “Who are you?” Josh followed up with “I’m the guy behind the guy.” A day later we spoke on the phone for two hours! The next day he sent me flowers, my favorite pink peonies, and I had I never told him they were my favorite flower. We have been inseparable ever since. SY: How long have you lived in Westport and what makes it the perfect town for you both in this next chapter of your family? JL: I have lived here for over 20 years, since 2002. Marysol has been here for about 15 years. Westport’s obvious strengths are its educational resources and family-oriented amenities. Its location and access to beaches, mountains, New York City the and Northeast corridor’s cities, airports, healthcare, and of course, great food make it ideal for us.

temporary. After the boys were in elementary school, I accepted Westport and I would become bedfellows. My sister lived here, and I couldn’t imagine being in Westport without her. The schools are fantastic, the beach, Main Street, the restaurants! Eating in Westport has come a long way since 2005. The proximity to NYC is great. Riding Metro-North home and seeing the water out the right side of the train car when you get to Greenwich makes me smile.
SY: Talk to us about the importance of family, and what that looks like for the two of you? JL: I do not really have family on my side. Marysol’s family is my family, and I love her two boys, Liam and Gavin. With both parents working, sports, theater, music— like many local families, we have an active household. MC: My sister has since moved to Long Island,
and I miss her and her family so much. The boys’ dad lives in Westport with his partner and we have a great system and blended family. Josh and our pup Nico fit so beautifully into our family. We can’t remember a time they weren’t with us.
SY: How would you both describe yourselves in three words? JL: Conscientious, reliable, blunt. MC: Curious, resilient, empathetic. SY: What do you both hope the kids learn from your professional experiences and passions? JL: I think the boys see and appreciate our work ethic and diligence. I hope they see a career not as “work” per se, but as an opportunity to find their purpose in life to solve problems they are enthusiastic about. MC: I’m designing a life that combines my

passion for storytelling with my passion for my culture. It’s my hope the boys see this and learn that what I do is not a job but rather, a calling. I want the boys to question their sources, listen in order to understand the people around them and above all, be open to new opportunties.

MC: My schedule, including my commute, is
SY: How are you and two aligned
on health and fitness? What importance does it play in your lives? JL: Well, I would say not just fitness, but our health in general, is very important to us. Since we met relatively late in our lives (I’m 50 and Marysol is 49), we have many experiences to share through our middle and older years. After I proposed, I said, “I want to squeeze a full 80 years of life into half that amount of time with you.” I want us to be vibrant, functional, capable, and productive for many decades. Our health is vital for us to attain our goals and enjoy life together. MC: I second what Josh said! And, yes,
he did tell me he wanted to squeeze 80 years into 50 with me. Fitness is not just working out to exhaustion (although we do get after it). One of my favorite things Josh will say is “rest your brain,” it makes perfect sense and it’s so important. SY: This is the “New Year, New
You” issue. Describe your fitness routines. Do you have any advice? JL: I was an All-American boxer in college and still do some boxing workouts. I competed in triathlons for about five years but stopped racing after COVID. Currently, I cross train five to seven days a week: weight-training, running, biking and pick-up basketball. We enjoy a track workout and lifting together whenever we can. Marysol is deceptively strong, which always impresses me. ADVICE: The No.1 most important fitness advice is to choose activities that are enjoyable. People will repeat actions that are rewarded so the choice of exercise should be a positive experience. Aesthetic goals aside, current guidelines for health benefits from exercise are quite realistic for most people. They are: 150 minutes per week of moderate aerobic exercise (brisk walking, running, biking, etc.) or 75 minutes per week of intense exercise. Two sessions of resistance training (20-30 minutes) are also recommended.
“Broadcast journalism found me. There is no other way to put it. When I became one nearly 20 years ago, I just wanted to tell interesting and insightful stories that resonated with people. From News 12, to GMA to CBS, ESPN and PIX, I always had an eye on the Latino community.” MARYSOL CASRTO
pretty brutal. I jump on the Peloton three- to five times a week at 4:45 a.m. It helps [with] wake-up and it centers me for the day. I love lifting heavy things and then putting them down, so I try to weight train at the Westport Y two to four days a week. Josh and I love playing tennis (I’m terrible) and running races and training at the Staples High School track. Josh is also coaching me to be a better basketball player. I love it so much, and though I’m not going to play point guard for the New York Liberty any time soon, I keep practicing like I am.
SY: Marysol, let’s discuss your brilliant, impressive and trailblazing career, and what it means to be a Latina and a strong role model/spokesperson/ mouthpiece for your community. MC: When I graduated Wesleyan, I almost went to work for JP Morgan. Instead, I taught high-school English to 9th and 12th graders. I also coached Girls Volleyball and yes, we won a State Championship. I’m that kind of coach. Broadcast journalism found me. There is no other way to put it. When I became one nearly 20 years ago, I just wanted to tell interesting and insightful stories that resonated with people. From News 12, to GMA to CBS, ESPN and PIX, I always had an eye on the Latino community. I grew up in The Bronx and saw my community being torn apart and also come together for the greater good. I’ve always felt a great responsibility to not only tell the stories of Latinos but also represent them on television. I’ve been a first and an only in nearly every newsroom and it’s my goal to change that. SY: You have exciting projects on the horizon, can you share your goals with the Somos launch and the up-andcoming fashion designers. MC: What they don’t tell you in TV news is that sometimes, being good is simply not enough. I came up in the business at a time when television was going through enormous paradigm shifts. The model changed, the way people watched (and still watch) television changed and cuts were inevitable. I was let go of legacy broadcast networks in part because deck chairs were being shuffled but also

because I was a non-issue to decision makers. The people at the top didn’t understand the value of the Latino voice. As television changed, so did the eyeballs watching them. Latinos make up 18% of the population. Investing in us isn’t just philanthropy or something to do for Hispanic Heritage Month, financially it makes less sense to ignore us. Somos* is something I dreamed up in 2013. I didn’t have the resources of business acumen to bring it to fruition back then. As Maya Angelou said, and Oprah repeated, “When you know better, you do better.” All this to say, broadcast-level content made by Latinas, for everyone, is coming in 2024. SY: Sports are such a big part of your career story. Tell us about being the first Latina/female PA announcer and what that means to you personally? MC: I come from a pretty sports-driven family and being an athlete is a big part of my identity. Being the first female PA announcer for the New York Mets and the first Latina PA announcer for Major League Baseball is an honor and something I do not take lightly. Baseball is so boring, and there are so many rules and it can be so slow but I love it like no
other. It was never my goal to be the first in anything. It has always been my hope to live out my passion, open doors for other women and bring up their names in rooms where no one else is speaking for them. SY: Josh talk to us about Lander Sport + Health Sciences and what you specifically focus on in your practice. JL: I have been in private practice for 22 years with Lander Sport + Health Sciences. I provide very personalized physical health-care and rehabilitation. People ask me what my title is and what I do, which seems like a simple question but it is not always easy to explain. I have a few different degrees totaling 13 years of education. I am a chiropractor with a secondary board specialty in neurology and I am also an exercise scientist. The practice consists of about 60% neurological cases such as concussions, balance disorders, Parkinson’s, strokes and 40% orthopedic and athletic injuries. Treating, guiding, and consultingpatients to help solve their health problems is still very rewarding. My practice has always been 100% referral and I am eternally grateful for the trust and confidence that patients have shown through the years.
SY: You are always at the forefront of new studies, specialties and expertise what are you excited about that is on the horizon. JL: Yes, I teach a neurology course at Sacred Heart University and have had the opportunity to complete some original research. My colleague, Dr. Matt Moran, and I recently completed a study investigating the relationship between gait and cognition in Parkinson’s. I am also the Section Editor for Neurologic Disease for the Journal of Clinical Exercise Physiology. The interest in the effects of exercise and movement on the brain is a burgeoning field of study; especially as it pertains to aging and longevity. The development of artificial intelligence, brain-computer interface devices and the monitoring of health markers is something I am cautiously excited about. SY: You both play such an integral role in our community and curious minds want to know, can share anything about your upcoming wedding? JL: Landersol thinks it will be at a location with either books, art, history—or all three. MC: Don’t forget music and delicious food!

DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and it conducts various nominations and research campaigns across the United States on behalf of publishers. To create the "top doctors" list, DataJoe Research facilitated an online peer-voting process, also referencing government sources. DataJoe also conducted media analysis through Internet research to factor in public perception. DataJoe then tallied the votes per category for each doctor to isolate the top nominees in each category. After collecting nominations and considering additional information from the media analysis, DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had a current, active license status with the state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a doctor's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that doctor was excluded from the list. In addition, any doctor who has been disciplined, up to the timeframe of the review process for an infraction by the state regulatory board, was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.

Final Note: We recognize there are many good doctors who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding doctors in the region and the results of our research campaign. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective doctors may not appear on the list.

eight loss drugs are certainly not a new phenomenon. The concept of taking medication to lose weight has been in development for almost a century. The drugs currently on the market, however, including the widely known Ozempic, have gained our attention both locally and nationally—and not just for the advertising jingle that tends to get caught in your head. For nearly 20 years, these drugs have been used to treat diabetic patients. They are now being prescribed to non-diabetic patients looking to achieve weight-loss goals quickly. In clinical trials, these drugs have shown other benefits, like reducing cardiovascular events such as heart attacks. This may all sound pretty miraculous, but we also know that these drugs produce some uncomfortable short-term side effects. More time is needed to understand the long-term side effects. While it is important to closely monitor potential side effects, these drugs are certainly having a dramatic effect on people—both physically and emotionally. There are “countless reasons [why] some people struggle with weight and others don’t,” says Dr. Stephanie Ortiz Page, director of Bariatric and Metabolic Medicine at Nuvance Health. Fluctuating hormones, health issues, injuries, medications, insulin resistance and genetics can all contribute to weight issues. “Having to live with the stigma that comes with being overweight can take a tremendous toll on one’s physical and emotional well-being,” she adds. Being overweight increases the risk for numerous health issues ranging from heart disease to cancer. The rate of obesity in Connecticut currently stands at 30 percent and soars up to 42 percent nationally. Dr. Neil Floch, director of bariatric surgery at Greenwich Hospital and associate professor of surgery at Yale School of Medicine, has been working with patients to fight the obesity battle for several years. He claims that 86 percent of people with diabetes are treated with medications, yet only two percent of people struggling with obesity are treated with medication. “The medications are extremely helpful for patients struggling with weight and also for patients who have had bariatric surgery and regained weight,” he says. “This is a real game changer.”

HOW THEY WORK
As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to approve these medications, demand for them is skyrocketing. In addition to Ozempic, you have likely heard the names Wegovy and Mounjaro (now also being sold under the brand name Zepbound). All of these drugs are said to suppress one’s appetite and reduce cravings for unhealthy and fatty foods using the active ingredient semaglutide. Semaglutides mimic the effects of the naturally occurring hormone in your body called GLP-1. This hormone helps to control blood sugar by increasing the release of insulin by the pancreas and lowering the release of glucagon. By reducing blood sugar, the body can shed pounds more quickly. Ozempic and Wegovy are essentially the same drugs, with both being distributed through at-home injections. The differences lie in the dosage levels and what health issues the drugs are prescribed for. Ozempic was given FDA approval to treat patients with type-2 diabetes. Wegovy, which is prescribed at a slightly higher dosage, is intended for the management of chronic weight issues. "Traditionally, the American Diabetes Association used metformin as the first line of defense for insulin resistance issues,” says Dr. Maria Ceclia Asnis, director of the medical weight-loss program at Stamford Hospital, "but recently amended their recommendation and GLP-1 receptors are now being used for the same purpose and have a similar level of efficacy in reducing blood sugar and improving cardiovascular health.”

A drug called tirzepatide first received FDA approval for treating diabetes in May 2022 and more recently was approved for weight loss in November 2023. This new and possibly even more-effective drug is sold under the name Mounjaro (for diabetes) and Zepbound (for weight loss). It works by activating not only the GLP-1 receptors, but also those of another natural hormone called GIP. And these are not the only drugs that are being used for weight loss these days. There is Qsymia and the seizure medication Topamax. There is also Contrave, a combination of the smoking-cessation antidepressant found in Wellbutrin and Naltrexone, a medication used to treat alcohol and opioid disorders. Some of these, like Naltrexone, have shown to be effective for smaller amounts of weight loss, but “if someone has 30 or 40 pounds to lose, I would prescribe a GLP-1 agonist such as semaglutide or tirzepatide,” Dr. Floch says.

PROCEEDING WITH CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM
WE DON'T NATURAL TALK ABOUT OPTIONS WHAT Before attempting these drugs as a quick fix, one should consider that there are a number of foods that can help the body react in a similar way to the weight-loss drugs. Fiber, for instance, helps stimulate the GLP-1 hormone because it breaks down slowly as it moves through the body. That makes you feel full, therefore reducing cravings and suppressing the appetite. The best type of fiber for this effect is fermentable fiber, the kind found in oats, rye, barley, beans, peas and lentils. Pectin—which is found in fruits like green bananas, apples and pears— can also trigger weight loss. Dr. Katherine Wehri Takayasu, Darien-based functional medicine practitioner, explains that some patients experience “more satiety when increasing fiber (with psyllium husk most recently making a social media splash) because fiber increases a sense of fullness” and others have seen results using herbs like berberine. “It's important no matter where you are on your journey that you need to balance fiber, fat and protein in the diet so that you are keeping yourself full, satisfied and in metabolic balance,” she adds.
WEIGHT SOMEONE SHOULD BE; WE TALK ABOUT WHAT WEIGHT WOULD BE HEALTHIER."
All the professionals we spoke with ultimately feel that these drugs can be very helpful for people struggling with type-2 diabetes and obesity and will continue to monitor both short-term and long-term side effects. They also all stress the importance of making changes in your diet and exercise routine, as well as addressing any mental health issues you may be struggling with. Dr. Asnis likes to begin discussing this topic with her patients by talking about the science of weight. “I explain to my patients that there are things that are and are not completely in their control,” she says. “We don’t talk about what weight someone should be; we talk about what weight would be healthier. We talk about lifestyle, exercise and diet... and, yes, medications when appropriate. These drugs can be highly effective if prescribed the right way.” W

A Love Letter To Westport by charles mall ory
I
have profound admiration for the state of Connecticut, where my family has resided since 1816, along with its historical significance. The following fictional love letter depicts Westport’s vibrant history
and enduring relevance through a historical lens. The writer lives in 1960s Greenwich and addresses two prominent Westport residents, Briggs Swift Cunninghan Jr., race-car driver and captain of the winning yacht in the 1958 America’s Cup, and his first wife, Lucie Bedford. Hopefully, readers will gain an appreciation of the town’s history through this context.
6 October 1960 To the Cunninghams, were so enthusiastic about their life in Westport and being surrounded by such talented and interesting people. Briggs, thank you for sharing your antique car collection. It certainly is world-class, and quite fun that you share that passion with James Melton just up the road. Lastly, Lucie, how proud you must be of what your grandfather and the Bedford family have done for the town. E.T. has set the standard for philanthropy as well as community involvement and improvement, and it would appear he has inspired others! All in all, a truly fabulous weekend, and we so enjoyed your friends and seeing the town. The charm and intimacy, and the feeling of being in Connecticut was palpable. As much as we love Greenwich (and we do), maybe it’s time for a change. Do you know a good broker? In the meantime, we can hope to find a beautiful hotel to stay in while we look. Lots of love, Charles and Georgette Mallory

I can’t thank you enough for the wonderful weekend we spent beachside chez Cunningham. We’ll not forget the magnificent coastline view from your house from sunrise to sunset, being picked up from the station by your captain in the car you drove on your honeymoon in France, or the magical sail on the Columbia along the coast. How lucky we were to have had a 15-knot offshore breeze on an America’s Cup winner. By the way, when we dropped the hook for coffee in the serene estuary of the Saugatuck, wasn’t that the Frederick Lewis estate on the eastern shore that’s now a park and golf course? What a brilliant purchase by the town. I think my parents met there at a party in the summer of 1920. They always talk about Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald jumping into the Sound off the end of the dock at midnight, while everyone was looking at Daisy’s green light on the opposite shore where the fireworks were launched. We so enjoyed meeting that todie-for young couple Paul Newman (Georgette nearly fainted) and Joanne Woodward. I hear they are to become the toast of Hollywood, though I hope fame doesn’t go to their head and they move to Beverly Hills. They
