PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE!
Summertime in Westport, Weston and Wilton is that highly anticipated season we all await throughout the year. It’s a time when we are able to truly celebrate the best of our coastal towns, eat al fresco, spend languid days on the water, enjoy our homes en plein air, ride around with the tops down and spend time in town exploring all that is new and noteworthy, from retail to restaurants. Newness abounds with the opening of countless restaurants from NYC’s Tacombi and Emmy Squared to local additions from The Blonidinst and Zucca Gastrobar. Fresh retail hits Main Street with men’s shops Rhone and Bird Dog. Being at the helm of Westport, Weston & Wilton Magazine is a responsibility I take seriously, and with it the commitment to celebrate the future and respect the past, understanding the deep roots of the community while discovering the trailblazers ready to enact change and impact the future of our area.
Our feature on Martha Stewart allowed me, in my second interview with the icon (the first was in 2015), to talk about where her career truly began, right here in Westport! Stewart’s mom, Big Martha, lived in Weston until she was 94 years old, and Martha herself has deep roots here. She lived on her farmstead from 1971 to 2007. She is working on her 100th
book, a collection of essentials from gardening to cooking on Amazon called The World of Martha, three series on Roku now streaming on The Martha Stewart Channel — Martha Cooks, Martha Gardens and Martha Holidays, her Skechers x Martha Stewart Collection (designed to emulate a Day in the Life of Martha), a namesake wine in partnership with 19 Crimes called Martha’s Chard, and iHeartMedia has partnered with her to produce a new iHeartRadio original podcast. But what we really focus on is her return to Turkey Hill, where it all began, and raising funds for Positive Directions, a behavioral health organization providing a continuum of prevention, counseling and recovery support to adults and adolescents. Stewart’s continued commitment to successful living is seen in the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Hospital, which provides resources for older adults to enhance the public awareness of aging. And if anyone is redefining the concept of aging, it is Stewart herself who, at 81, is SI Swimsuit’s oldest cover star. With a whopping 60 billion impressions at publication, that truly shows the power of Martha, at any age!

OF WIND & WATER
… and boats. It’s serious summer now, so I thought I’d muse on what happens when you marry a sailor—which is plenty.
It started on our honeymoon when Jack chartered a sailboat with paid captain and first mate in the Virgin Islands—to see how I liked it. Never mind he had me doing laps around the deck to get my sea legs without stubbing my toes on those little brass cleats. I did like it. The captain was a real pro from Argentina, but his wife was a real bitch from the Bronx who kept yelling at him for forgetting the potatoes.
So we sailed on, eventually in our own thirty-foot Nonsuch Purple Tiger out of Riverside Yacht Club. (Our partner Alec Robertson went to Williams with its purple cow and Jack to Princeton with its tiger.)
Jack, an experienced deep-water sailor, was invited on plenty of Bermuda Races. I’d fly down and sit around with the ladies waiting for our boats to cross the line; but once I agreed to sail back on Newbold Smith’s Reindeer. It took six long days. Everyone was sick except Newbold, Jack and me. We thrashed around in the Gulf Stream forty-eight hours— raining like crazy above, super-hot below and me strapped to the gimbled stove in my bathing suit trying to keep us fed. Then it cleared and there we were, a little dot on an endless sea. One night on watch, Jack and I were savoring the peace of being alone under the stars, when suddenly bearing down on us came a monster from Mars—too high for a boat, too low for a plane. Turned out it was a blimp looking for a missing yacht. Tragically, later it made the back page of LIFE magazine going down in flames.
Marry a sailor and you never run out of stories. Helping Jack ferry a boat from Nova Scotia to Maine after a MarbleheadHalifax Race, I spent my entire time in the bow listening for fog horns, spotting lobster
pots and getting seasick. (Jonathan was born eight months later.) Meanwhile, Wooly Henry panicked over a fire in the galley and threw the oven overboard. Sure was tricky finding someone in Northeast Harbor to custom-make a new one before the owner showed up.
There were more serious happenings, too. In 1989 Jack was swept off Bob Hart’s ketch Athene in a Force Nine gale in the North Atlantic. The skipper was white knuckled at the wheel, when Jack, being dragged through the water by his lifeline, looked up at him and said: “Would you mind giving me a hand?” Ever the Philadelphia gentleman. But they lived through it, arriving safely at the world’s oldest yacht club in Cork, Ireland.
Then he made headlines in Greenwich Time when he went for a Sunday sail, fell off the boat and, with halyard wrapped around his ankle, was towed feet first toward Long Island with Purple Tiger on auto pilot clocking four knots. Blessedly, Jack managed to kick off a shoe, and the line released. We had to replace his hearing aids, glasses and wallet, but I didn’t have to replace a husband.
Thus, it made sense for me to take a course for first mates at the yacht club entitled “Suddenly Alone.” The question was: “What’s the first thing you do if your husband has a heart attack or falls overboard?” Whereupon somebody quipped: “Get help selling the boat!”
Well, maybe.
I married a sailor, so I bought Bonine and Topsiders. He married a singer and became a Grace Notes groupie. Supporting each other’s interests makes for better marriages.
But the day finally came when we had to drop the sails. It’s some consolation that Purple Tiger is now owned by a young family who just loves messing about in boats. And not too long ago she was spotted at anchor in Stonington, still bearing her funky name on her transom. W

Creating Conversations
With the launch of KR X YOU, KERRI ROSENTHAL puts the power of creativity in your hands!
by jill johnson mann
Wish you could channel Kerri Rosenthal’s talent and make your own personal artistic statement? Now you can, with Kerri Rosenthal’s new custom artwork program on kerrirosenthal.com: KR X YOU. Choose a bespoke KR painting as a background and use an array of customizable letters and symbols to superimpose your message. “We also have a KR X YOU workshop in our flagship store here in Westport,” explains Rosenthal, “where you can create on a computer and see examples of produced artwork.” Three weeks later your masterpiece will arrive at your doorstep, ready to grace your wall and become a conversation piece.
The Westport native, whose brand features fashion, home décor and art, is known for her signature Drippy Heart paintings. “I’ve always loved love,” says Rosenthal, “and when I started painting, I started to paint hearts but in a more abstract way. As I was looking at the heart, it felt too perfect and not at all reflective of love—messy love, imperfect love, the best kind of love. So, I started to mess with it and ended up with my first Drippy Heart.” KR X YOU features 15 different Drippy Hearts, from a solid slate heart to a big heart
packed with all tones of tiny blue and pink hearts. They have this strange power to fill the viewer’s own heart with joy.
There is also a “Painterly White Square” for the minimalist artists out there. One client chose that background and added the message “Love Story Beach House,” in a mix of pastel textured letters. The KR X YOU alphabet was developed from Rosenthal’s word series, and you can feel the love in each letter.
“I have a very robust original art commission business,” says Rosenthal, “but the cost is quite high, and that could leave out people with smaller budgets. We created this custom art program so that my commissions can be more accessible to all budgets.” Prices range from $850 to $3,600. Multiple frame options are available and sizes range from 15”x15” to 40”x60”.
Rosenthal launched her line in 2016 and the brand is now available in over 150 shops in the U.S. and Canada, including Bloomingdales, Anthropologie and Shopbop. The Kerri Rosenthal store in Westport is located at 181 Main Street.
Plans are in the works for more Kerri Rosenthal stores to open in key cities across the U.S.

FUTURE FORWARD
THE WESTPORT LIBRARY’S TRAILBLAZING RENOVATION CREATES A MULTIDISCIPLINARY SPACE FOR THE COMMUNITY
by jill johnson mann
residents have full access to the studios to record their podcasts and songs or train on the cameras and equipment in Verso’s Crew Call program.
“The broadcast studio looks like a slightly—and I emphasize slightly—scaled-down NBC control room,” says Library director Bill Harmer. Harmer came to Westport in 2015 from Chelsea District Library in Michigan, which, under his leadership, was named the Best Small Library in America by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2022 the Westport Library was named a 5-star library by the Library Journal Index—the only one in our state. “The renovation put us at the forefront of innovation for libraries nationwide,” says Harmer.
His pride is clear as he details what visitors can experience here:
rock bands Sunflower Bean and the Smithereens played to hundreds of people,” says Harmer. On July 13, guests will enjoy the annual star-studded BOOKED for the evening fundraiser; Emmy-winning actress Laura Linney will host.
Westport is a town high on wow factor. The Levitt Pavilion on a summer evening—wow. Compo Beach at Sunset—wow. The gallery of Hollywood stars on the Playhouse walls—wow. And as of its twentymillion-dollar renovation, the Westport Library—WOW.
Standing in the vast Trefz Forum, which transforms from innovative library work space to spectacular event venue like a Murphy bed popping into a wall, is like being transported in a futuristic movie. There is a stage, large LED screen, theater-quality sound and lighting, and state-of-the-art broadcast studios. Library board member Andrew Wilk isn’t easily wowed, but Verso Studios—another jewel of the Library’s transformation— dazzled the former Executive Producer of Live From Lincoln Center. “The technology rivals what I used for major PBS productions,” he says. Westport
“In the Trefz Forum we have hosted 400+ people for James Patterson at StoryFest, our annual literary festival. At our second VersoFest, which drew nearly 4,000 people,
“We have a Children’s Library, a Library of Things, a seed library, a teen library and an incredible reference section,” explains Harmer. “Verso Studios is a tremendous asset. To have an SSL Studio, a broadcast studio, and a post-production suite allows the imaginations of our community to run wild. Whatever they want to create, we have the tools. In April 2022 we launched our own independent record label, the first of its kind for a public library anywhere in the world.”
The library also capitalizes on the beauty of the nature around it. “The lower river-walk was transformed into a quiet sanctuary with books and river views,” explains Harmer. “Kids read and play in the reimagined children’s department with the river and Jesup Green as a backdrop. This summer kids can enjoy Camp Explore and our Summer Learning Clubs. We also have the summer courses for Verso University, our lifelong learning initiative.”
Beyond the innovative spaces, professional-grade equipment, programs for all ages and lovely views, there is another key ingredient in Harmer’s recipe for
the Library’s success. “I’ve worked in libraries for most of my adult life and have never been in a place, and in a town, that is so engaged, so excited to give back and so willing to try new things,” he says. “Our community members act as a sounding board, an idea factory.” Harmer wants everyone in Westport to get in on it: “There is so much wisdom in these walls, so much to discover.”

Club Sweat
Female- and Westportfounded in 2022, Club Sweat is the workout craze taking cardio enthusiasts by storm. Elliptical training is a low-impact and highly effective way to promote overall fitness and weight loss…less pressure on the joints and a high calorie burn. Don’t confuse this class with that often-boring, elliptical gym experience. Heart-pumping music, fun choreography and a true sense of community set it apart. If a deep "sweat" and toned physique is what you crave, this is the endurance challenge for you. 623 Post Road E., Westport club-sweat.com
Sea Kayak Connecticut
Experience nature while getting fit. While Sea Kayak, located on the Saugatuck River, rents traditional kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, I highly recommend pedal boarding or pedal kayaking…think stairclimber workout on water. The credentialed staff will show you how to use your selected vessel before you embark on a serene, yet physical journey that will strengthen and tone. Zen out on your own or experience it with friends and/or family. Rental hours: Sun.Wed., 9 a.m.6 p.m., Thu. - Sat., 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. 575 Riverside Avenue, Westport seakayakct.com

Restore Hyper Wellness
The most important part of any workout routine is recovery. Not only does it help with muscle repair, but it minimizes soreness and replenishes energy. One of my favorite recovery tools is full-body cryotherapy. It elevates mood, promotes healing, improves long-term performance, helps defy the signs of aging, and yes, burns calories. Safe for every day, this ancient cold-therapy practice is an essential part of getting fit. Combine it with other services, like infrared sauna or red light therapy, for the ultimate blast of wellness.

Tell us a bit about what TheseFineWalls specializes in as an online gallery?
TheseFineWalls is an online art gallery that offers a unique collection of limited-edition photographs. Each work on our site has been hand selected by me and is a work that I feel can stand alone on its own as a statement piece. Our customers know when they visit our site, they can find something for almost any interior without the hassle of sorting through hundreds of prints. Each and every order is custom made and produced on demand which gives us the ability to tailor orders to our customers' unique needs, offering a truly bespoke experience!
About how many photographers are in your roster right now?
We currently have twelve emerging and established photographers from around the world on our site, including myself! Additionally, I have relationships with many
artists and art dealers which we are able to access on behalf of our customers, and I am constantly discovering new talent! Who are some of your noteworthy photographers at the moment?
I feel passionately about all of the artists on our site, I can’t choose favorites! They all have such a strong and complementary style.
What types of works are you seeing your clients seeking currently?
Black-and-white prints are having a moment, and I am so happy to offer great works from so many of our photographers. Dina Broadhurst’s prints are always great for customers who are seeking an oversized statement piece.
You specialize in not only the curation of the artists but the experience in terms of picking pieces that suit your home. How does this virtual process work?
Usually, customers will reach out to us and ask for help selecting a print(s) for a specific space in their home. We want our customers to purchase items that they will love for years to come, so it is important to know what prints they are attracted to and get a sense of their unique style when providing a recommendation. We with the request photos of the space and relevant dimensions. This information gets packaged together and informs our suggestion of works. We provide customers photoshopped images of our prints in their space whenever possible so that they can visualize how it will all come together!
Your business has expanded we love discovering that your bespoke services are now available in Westport. Tell us a bit about how that came about? I want our customers to buy what they love and for that to work in their space, so it has always been important to me to offer custom options. The simple addition of a border can change how any given print presents, and I love working with customers to get this right for them every time! Our printer/ framer is located in the tri-state area, which makes shipping to Westport painless. We are able to offer hand delivery for oversized works instead of engaging a third-party crating and shipping company. This makes for easy delivery without any worries about shipping damages. Westport is hot right now, and we have customers
purchasing beautiful homes that we have enjoyed taking a part in!
As you look at the road ahead for the business where are you seeing the most growth?
So much has changed since I first launched my business, it is hard to predict the future! I love that TheseFineWalls is nimble and able to constantly assess opportunities to grow and evolve. We have many exciting things in the pipeline for both customers and for the trade that I can’t wait to launch. As a mom to three young boys who will soon all be in school, I am also very excited to focus on the creative again and bring some more of my own works to the site!

One of the world’s most influential interior designers, LARS BOLANDER brings the indoors, outdoors
by sophie edwards
Lars Bolander’s Post Road shop is filled to the brim with sophisticated and unique Gustavian furnishings. His designs have been featured in House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, English House & Garden, and the Wall Street Journal
As the weather warms, we can’t take our eyes off the acclaimed designer’s luxe Louis XV outdoor teak furniture line. The collection is fashioned of natural, light-colored teak with a outdoor finish. Louis XV includes timeless pieces such as outdoor tables, seating and folding chairs.
The furniture is minimalist yet distinguished, with stylish details and functional design. One of our favorite pieces is the Outdoor LXV Couch, a long and elegant sofa with a carved top, detailed legs and delicate floral hatching to let just the right amount of sunlight through (pictured right). Upholstered cushions are available for each chair and sofa and all pieces can be oil finished for a more matte look. Lars Bolander’s furniture is built to last, so you’ll have gorgeous pieces for years to come. It’s wonderful to see his style brought outdoors.
The upcoming season at the Lars Bolander Westport boutique will celebrate all things home decor! The event will include Lars Bolander’s furniture, a JUDY ROSS pop-up featuring the designer’s hand-embroidered pillows as well as a JEWELRY POP-UP (details coming). GRATSI WINE will be providing sustainably produced drinks. Stay tuned for updates on the appearance of a VW Van outfitted in CASTEL FABRICS and WALLPAPERS

NESTLED IN WESTON, CHRISTINA ROUGHAN'S TERRAZZZA IS IDEAL FOR SUMMER ENTERTAINING
by s uzanne gannon // photography by jane beiles
Interior designer Chris Roughan remembers vividly the rush of memory she felt at the moment she peered through a window in the root cellar on this property. It evoked the soulful quality of another place elsewhere in the world that had made an indelible impression: the little Tuscan town of Castellina in Chianti, where she had spent time over the years at the villa of a college pal.
All these years later, in 2010, on her tour of this 200-year-old house and the four acres that surrounded it, the cellar-window reverie sealed the deal. Roughan and her husband bought the property, which had a history all its own. The house had been built by Silliman Godfrey, a descendant of one of the families who in 1757 founded Norfield Parish, which would ultimately be consolidated into the town now known as Weston.

“It was so natural,” she says, recalling the similarities between this overgrown and somewhat forlorn spot once at the center of a thriving Colonial economy—with a blacksmith shop that had provided roadside assistance and a toll booth where merchants on the trade route to Redding were taxed—and the vineyard-and-cypress-ornamented outdoor spaces where she had enjoyed bisteca over an open flame or a chilly negroni in a tumbler. An idea had taken root.
Though it was unlikely that all these years later, in her own New England idyll, she’d uncover bronze tools used by the Etruscans, she was intrigued by the remnants of the past: sturdy stone and mortar walls, rustic beams and a weathered barn of boards milled from chestnut trees that had predated or survived the devastating blight of the early 20th century. These features became the armature of her exterior design. She replaced errant nails and rotting lumber, and preserved the roof with varnish. Then she
added electricity but not heat.
As one does in the Tuscan countryside, Roughan extends the usefulness of her outdoor quarters through three whole seasons. A lover of lilies, she indulges in the color and perfume of big bloomers like stargazers and casa blancas. She throws a soirée at which guests don caftans and enjoy cocktails and canapés, the house special being a vodka gimlet with homegrown mint and caramelized bacon on a skewer. With an apron and shears, she forages for interesting plants and flowers, and then makes arrangements, an activity she finds transportive.
“I just love how I feel when I’m out there,” says the designer whose enduring counsel to clients is that their home should be a reflection of the unique individual they are.
Whether in Tuscany or New England, honoring the unique beauty of a place is her constant.

HOW DO YOU ROLL?
WARM OR COLD, LOBSTER ROLLS RULE!
Whether you like your lobster roll warm with drawn butter on a toasted brioche bun or chilled with mayonnaise and herbs on a hot dog roll might not be just a matter of taste. Where you’re from—or where you first sampled this summer classic—likely has a lot of do with how you “roll.”
In Connecticut, lobster rolls are served warm. Die-hard fans of this style think it so superior to its cold Maine counterpart that they call that a lobster salad roll. It’s a pretty accurate moniker: in Maine, lobster rolls are served cold with mayonnaise, often with celery and fresh herbs atop some bibb lettuce nestled in the bun.
While many people consider the Maine style to be the definitive lobster roll, it’s far more likely that lobster served on buttered bread was first served warm, not cold, having been cooked in an age prior to refrigeration. Torn between trying the OG local version or the chilled Maine variety? Enjoy them both! Perhaps indulge in the warm style in cool weather and the cold kind when it’s hot outside. Better yet, combine the two. This lobster lover likes nothing better on a sizzling summer’s day than cold lobster in a hot and toasted buttered bun.

At 11:00 a.m. on a recent Thursday morning, a parking valet could have made a killing at the lot outside the Westport Farmers’ Market on Imperial Avenue. Inside a perimeter of bare-boned, DIY tents, a scrappy colony of 30-plus farmers and vendors universally dedicated to the virtuous production of leafy greens and root vegetables, cheeses, meats, fish and bread—and honey, eggs, and flowers, too—had sprouted. And locavores, seduced by the benefits of organic sustenance, were gathering.
After opening for business in 2006 in the parking lot of the Westport Country Playhouse under the nurturing gaze of actor Paul Newman and chef Michel Nischan, WFM, as it’s known, drifted into a dark period of infighting and financial malfeasance before crossing paths, 13 years ago, with seasonal-food zealot Lori Cochran-Dougall. After 17 years in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where she had chaired the board of the Jackson Hole Farmers Market, Cochran-Dougall had transplanted herself and her family to Westport. But commuting to New York as a corporate marketing consultant proved alienating for the Roanoke, Virginia, native who grew up in a family that canned its own apple sauce and ground its own peanut butter—and made weekly pilgrimages to one of the country’s longest continually operating farmers’ markets, where neighbors not only enjoyed the peaches and green beans they grew but also each others’ company.
“In a supermarket, there’s no personal touch—everything is cold, including the metal cart,” says Cochran-Dougall, who recalls tearing into a homemade baguette and a block of cheese with her brother while sliding around in the backseat of the car after a trip to the market. “There were no Little Debbies in our house.”
Craving the connection of bonafide community, and encouraged by an intuitive husband, she put her C-suite ambitions on pause and volunteered her dazzling knack for organization and strategy. On the spot, she was promoted to become a $10-perhour staffer, and within a few months, was hired as executive director. With a 30-page PowerPoint deck and lots of plastic, she revived the operation just as a soft and steady summer rain puts the bounce back into a wilted tomato plant.
She inaugurated the winter season at Gilbertie’s organic greenhouse; fortified relationships with nonprofits (Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Gillespie Center, Homes for the Brave); lured restaurants like Alma and Boxcar Cantina into preparing food in real time using local onions, garlic, and herbs; partnered with nearby

schools in robust educational programming, and indoctrinated a rigorous system for vetting and nurturing her sellers. Ultimately, Cochran-Dougall, also a WFM board member, had incubated a nonprofit engine of agricommerce recognized by the American Farmland Trust.
At the heart of the endeavor is her belief that one should know where their food grows and also her conviction that the livelihood of a community depends on the viability of its farmer economy.
“I have been graced to earn their respect,” she says, with reverence for the sacrifice of farmers whose afternoon appearance at an outdoor market is but a small fraction of the hours they spend planting crops and caring for livestock. “They educate me, which empowers me, and gives me a voice to represent them.”
On her weekly walkabout, Cochran-Dougall patrols the outdoor mall with the intensity of a basketball coach pacing the sideline during March Madness. She champions new members such as Pierluigi Mazzella, whose micro-bakery, Fatto a Mano, is introducing Westport to traditional Italian bread and pastry one focaccia at a time. She reminds her cheery Staples High School interns where the trash bags are kept, catches up with chocolatier Fritz Knipschildt, an Oprah fave who’s fancying some rhubarb’s he’s spied and greets ladies who come for lunch from New Haven every week. She also instructs, with firm kindness, the purveyors of pressed juices to post their ingredients and sources.
Yet the lush and earthy goodness at the center of the enterprise—bouquets of jumbo basil wrapped in craft paper by Two Guys From Woodbridge; Muddy Feet Flower Farm’s perky poppies available for $3 a stem; “beetoa” salad (beets, quinoa,
pistachios, capers, cow-feta) from the food-punning proprietors of Herbaceous Catering; Lavender Hills Farm’s smoked-paprika-andgarlic chevre—never escapes her.
Admiring the bunch of dainty, Instagram-ready carrots she just purchased from Fort Hill Farm, a WFM mainstay, Cochran-Dougall says, “These, for instance, won’t make it past tomorrow at my house.”
Left: The patient queue at Seacoast Mushrooms suggests that the frilly maitakes and pink oysters—with their exquisitely crenulated underbellies—contain the secret to euphoria.

A Recipe For Summer
An Al Fresco Fête With CAROLINE FEY, Westport’s Chef and Hostess Extraordinaire

While the winter holidays may be about polished glitz and glam, the summer is all about relaxed elegance. A simple sparkle to match the golden hour of a stunning sunset. A memorable night with friends built on spontaneity and the ambition to seize the season.
Chef Caroline Fey’s philosophy for cooking, and entertaining in general, is elevated recipes for everyday living, and she feels this never rings truer than in the summertime. Summer is nature’s chime for friends and family to gather and bask in the opportunity to slow down and unwind.
“Getting together should be as fun and breezy as an evening spent at Compo Beach,” notes Fey. “My favorite gatherings are the ones that feel special because of their approachable intimacy — and they shouldn’t be hard to pull together. I find inspiration in everything around me and bring
these elements into the events I plan.”
Fey recently organized a summer gettogether with some of my closest girlfriends at her home in Westport. She decided early evening was best, so she planned a menu inspired by some of her favorite locally sourced rosés, featuring small bites that celebrated the flavors of the summer and paired well with the wine.
One place she found inspiration was the Westport Farmers Market. For her menu she wanted to ensure there was a range of flavors and textures, and the market puts the season’s spoils on display. Having a crudité board is a really easy way to bring color and flavors to the table. While she loves making dips, to keep things simple, she often makes her favorite Green Goddess recipe, but source others from the farmers at the market or Whole Foods.
Another aspect to her menu planning is

finding different and unexpected ways to serve traditional favorites. A unique twist on the classic wedge salad is simply serving it on a skewer — it was a hit with the ladies because it was so easy to eat. When creating her garlic butter lobster roll sliders, she realized that the adding the crunch of a potato chip inside the slider helped to elevate it in a unique way.
The Grapevine is her favorite local wine store, and it has a great, approachable selection of rosés, many of which are uniquely sourced and reasonably priced. They’re always adding something new on their shelves, which keeps it fun and interesting.
And finally, she designs her table. Her friend Shari Leibowitz at Bespoke Designs has curated a great selection of fun, outdoor pieces perfect for poolside parties, like these beautiful, scalloped melamine platters that have a dome to keep pesky bugs away. But the best part of setting an event together that feels welcoming is pulling platters you’ve collected over the years.

Green Goddess Dip
Makes about 2 cups
Green Goddess salad dressing originated in 1923 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. It was named after a hit play at the time called The Green Goddess. While the salad dressing is fantastic, the bright green, herby flavors are perfect in a dip as well, and brighten up any crudité board. Feel free to use whatever herbs you have on hand; thyme and cilantro work well here, too.
Ingredients:
1 cup packed basil leaves
½ cup packed parsley leaves
2 tablespoons tarragon leaves, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons dill fronds, roughly chopped
1 large garlic clove
¾ teaspoons salt
½ teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon packed lemon zest
1/3 cup fresh lemon juice
¼ teaspoon anchovy paste (optional)
1 small shallot, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 medium ripe avocado, pitted
½ cup (4 oz) sour cream
¼ cup mayonnaise
Preparation:
Put all the ingredients into a blender and process until smooth.

Nectarine & Burrata Crostini with Pistachio Pesto & Calabrian Chili Honey
Makes about 40 crostini
I love the combination of sweet fruit and salty cheese on crostini, and these do not disappoint. The pistachio pesto is so good you can put it on just about anything. If you’re in a pinch make these crostini with store-bought pesto and they will still be delicious. Don’t skip the Calabrian chili honey drizzle though; it brightens up the crostini and adds a little bit of sweet heat. My favorite Calabrian chili paste is from Trader Joe’s and it’s fermented. If you don’t love spicy food, add a little bit of the paste because it’s pretty hot, or just use honey alone.
Ingredients:
Crostini:
1 day old baguette, thinly sliced into about 40 pieces
Olive oil
Kosher salt
Pepper
Pistachio Pesto:
2 cups fresh basil leaves (without large stems)
¼ cup roughly chopped pistachios
1 large garlic clove
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
Toppings:
3 firm nectarines, thinly sliced
3 balls burrata, drained on paper towels before being torn into small pieces
½ cup good honey
1 teaspoon (or less) Calabrian chili paste
Basil sprigs
Preparation:
Crostini:
Preheat the oven to 350° F. Place the baguette slices on a lined baking sheet and drizzle generously with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake until crisp and golden at the edges, 10 to 14 minutes. Cool.
Pistachio Pesto:
Put the basil, pistachios, garlic and salt in a food processor and process until finely chopped. While the machine is running, slowly add the olive oil until the mixture is smooth. Add the cheese and pulse a few times, until it is just incorporated. Use right away, or store in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can freeze the pesto as well.
To Serve:
Mix the honey with the Calabrian chili paste and set aside. Place the crostini on a serving tray. Spread about a teaspoon of pesto onto each crostini. Top with a piece of the burrata and a slice of nectarine. Drizzle with honey and garnish with fresh basil leaves.
Summer Berry Trifles With Shortbread & Whipped Crème Fraîche
Makes 6 small trifles in mason jars, little vases, or juice glasses
Making these incredibly simple little trifles in cute jars or glasses makes them feel special. If you don’t want to buy a vanilla bean just to make the whipped crème fraiche, you can purchase Vermont Creamery vanilla bean crème fraiche, which easily takes care of the issue. It’s sold at Whole Foods. You can also use vanilla bean paste, which can be sourced at Williams-Sonoma.
Ingredients:
1 8oz. container crème fraiche
2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar
1 vanilla bean, seeds removed or 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
1 package shortbread cookies, roughly smashed with a rolling pin
2 cups of your favorite summer berries - I used raspberries and blackberries but any combo will do
Preparation:
Mix the crème fraiche, confectioners’ sugar & vanilla together in a bowl and whisk until the texture of loose whipped cream.
Add a spoonful of the whipped crème fraiche to the bottom of mini trifle dishes or mason jars. Next, add a few berries and sprinkle of shortbread cookies. Top with a spoonful of the whipped crème fraîche. Repeat, top with a shortbread cookie piece and a berry and serve.

Cover Story
Master of Reinvention!
MARTHA STEWART returns to Westport for Positive Directions, and discusses her much-buzzed-about Sports Illustrated Cover, the anniversary of Entertaining and Successful Living.
by samantha yanks //
Samantha Yanks: It is wonderful to reunite with you in Westport. Why was coming back to Turkey Hill to support Positive Direction important to you?
Martha Stewart: My career basically started at Turkey Hill. That farm became very famous. My first book was written there. It’s kind of fun to revisit to see what the Bird Family has done with my beautiful, beloved property. To be able to raise money for a very worthwhile cause, (Positive Directions is a non profit behavioral health organization providing prevention, counseling and medication management) at the same time is lovely. So I’m doing good while I’m doing something good for myself, and it’s nice for me to see that property again. I drive by
it every so often while I’m going to Terrain or to someplace in Westport, but to see it firsthand behind the stone wall is very exciting and nice. Many of my friends are going to come because they’re very excited to see the evolution of that property also.
SY: In recent news (and it is all over the news), what inspired the Sports Illustrated cover?
MS: Sports Illustrated just told me that they have had 60 billion impressions, SIX-O billion impressions on that issue, and mostly my cover story! And they might even have to go back to print more copies. On the first day my cover sold more than all covers last year
on the first day alone. So that’s good. I mean, for Sports Illustrated, first, to ask me to do this was bold and they are also very creative. And they realized they had a very good sense about putting me on the cover. When they asked me, it was suggested to them by a friend of mine who’s a very well-known dermatologist. I’m working with him on a skincare line. So he suggested, oh, you know, Martha looks really great. And he said to use her in the issue; I don’t think he even said cover. I think he said use her in the issue. So the editor called, and I thought it was a good idea. I thought, this is something different for me, and who would’ve thunk it, but go for it. So that’s how it happened. It was not terribly complicated, but it was exciting.

JULY/AUGUST 2023 WESTPORT 55
Whoever dreamed you’d be on the cover of Sports Illustrated? It never occurred to me in a million years. But guess what? How nice. It’s a nice thing. My Sports Illustrated cover shows other women that there are possibilities. There are possibilities all around us for whatever we want to do.
SY: One of the things you have touched on is being positive about the possibilities at any age. What would you say is your message is on that?
MS: I don’t use the word anti-aging because that’s sort of a silly word. There is no such thing as anti-aging. I use the phrase successful living. I think that’s a much more important phrase to use. Live well while you’re alive. And that’s my whole message really to everybody. Live well, make a beautiful home, have a fabulous garden if you can and a happy life. It takes a lot of education to live well. And that’s what my whole career has been about, is about educating the public how to live well.
SY: In terms of education and access, talk about what you have developed with Mount Sinai and what inspired that work?
MS: My mom lived in Weston, big Martha. Big Martha lived until she was about 94 years old. And she was the prime example of living well. She was vibrant, she was flexible, she was an educated woman who read many newspapers a day, she knew what was going on, and she drove her friends everywhere. She drove her Audi until probably a week before she died. She was an active, successful woman who lived her life, compared to so many people who give up or just flounder or just don’t know how to age gracefully. She had it all. She did a really great job of it and never lost her marbles as they say. She kept a very, very vibrant brain, which is what I’m hoping for everybody who visits my hospital at Mount Sinai. It was built because of my mom and it was dedicated to her. We had the dedication ceremony 15 years ago. We now have two centers for living. Both locations provide primary care for older adults as well as caregiver support.
SY: What are some current projects you are working on?
MS: I’m working on my 100th book, which is 100 of my favorite recipes in celebration of my hundredth book. So, I worked on that all day. This morning we were photographing
it, and I still have two more days this week of photography. We’re working very hard on that. We’re doing a huge news series for Roku Television on gardening, cooking, and entertaining. And that too is really devoted to educating the public in many different occupations for the homemaker.
SY: You are so well known for creating products that give consumers access to you. Tell us a bit about what you are currently creating?
MS: We have created thousands of different kinds of products over the years. Currently I’m working on a whole line of footwear with Skechers. They’re fun and they’re useful. These are affordable, in keeping with my whole philosophy of designing affordable, excellent, useful, beautiful, luxurious products. This is what I’ve been doing for a long, long time. I also am making a wine now that I really like doing, Martha’s Chard and Martha’s Lighter Chard, and hopefully a third wine will be coming to stores in the near future. That’s with Treasury Wine Estates and 19 Crimes. It’s an excellent wine for the price. I worked really hard on making it the kind of wine that I would want to drink. We’re also working on all kinds of home products, wonderful housewares as usual, and we’ve been doing that for a long time. But we have great sheets, towels, kitchen utensils, pots of pans, and gardening tools in the pipeline.
SY: Tell us about your podcast and how you pick the guests who are on. Who have you loved talking to? What do you love about that platform?
MS: Well first of all, you don’t have to have hair and makeup, and that’s really great. But in fact, I always try to look nice because we film it. So, we have a lot of videos and we film each interview. But I’m lucky because I have met so many fantastic people over the years, many of whom have great stories to tell. And I can even just call them up and say, you want to do the podcast? And most of them, I don’t think we’ve had anybody say no yet, realizing, of course, that my podcasts are very well listened to. There are hundreds of thousands of different podcasts available. But mine is striking a chord, I think, because it is personal. I’m approaching it from as personal a viewpoint as possible. These are friends, these are acquaintances, these are people I’ve worked with or had dealings with in one way or another. And it is just fun to be with them for about an hour to ask questions,
to get some insight into new subject matter for my listeners. We’ve been doing it for almost a year now, and it’s very exciting. We’ve talked to people from different walks of life. Like Ai Weiwei, the Chinese artist who was fantastic. We had Andy Cohen last week, who was so much fun. We’ve had a lot of interior designers, including Steven Sills and Michael Smith, and so many more.
SY: You’re so well-known for giving people access to you, to your evolution and how you stay constantly relevant. Tell us how you made that possible?
MS: Social media made it easy, actually. It all started with my first book, Entertaining which was written at Turkey Hill in Westport. Then I wrote probably 15 more books in that particular location. And that opened up my world to a very vast audience. In combination with that, I had a TV show. My TV career first started off on PBS with specials, then CBS, then NBC, and then to Lifetime. We had an awful lot of different television shows, with thousands and thousands of hours of educational how-to, evergreen television. And that, again, introduced people to the world of good living. And then I started my magazine Martha Stewart Living, which was printed for 32 years.
SY: Let’s hear about the connection between you and Snoop Dogg.
MS: You know, he was on my show and we hit it off, and he made good brownies, and then we did the Justin Bieber roast, and then we had a show for three years, a really funny, funny, cooking talk show. He’s winning a big award in a couple of weeks. He’s getting the songwriter’s Hall of Fame induction, in New York City, and I’m going with Clive Davis to celebrate.
SY: And finally, of course, you’re coming back to Westport for Positive Directions. What are you most excited about during this visit?
MS: I love to come back to Westport. The Consign Mart I go to all the time with Jim Klinko, he and I also worked together for my TV special The Great American Tag Sale, and I always go to Oliver’s nursery, Terrain, and down Main Street and, of course, I have friends that I visit. So coming back to Turkey Hill is just like coming home.

Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's first restaurant in Connecticut is located in Greenwich, and it offers a worldly adventure for food lovers. Start with shared plates at the communal table, or pull up a seat at the handsome bar—this is a friendly and see-and-be-seen approach to dining out. Now, let's talk about food: The menu is the best of Latin flavors for today, such as Shrimp Ceviche in Agua Diablo, Warm White Asparagus in a jalapeño-coriander vinaigrette, crispy fish taco with chipotle mayo, pickled cabbage, apples and habenero with mint, and (for healthy appetities) perhaps the Black Sea Bass with crispy potatoes and red chili lime sauce or just a whole grilled lobster with smoked chile butter.

Best Mexican LA TAQUERIA
Everybody (and we think we mean this literally) loves Mexican food. High-end to street food, it's all good in its own way. But it also makes it a challenge to stand out among the competition, which is just what La Taqueria did. When asked to choose a favorite, our voters were loud and clear: La Taqueria. Chef and owner Dennis Lake found the sweet spot, offering Mexican food in a casual space that feels more like you've happened upon a local haunt. Part of the secret must be in the food, such as (prepare yourself) the Grilled Chicken Burrito, with rice, beans, guacamole, lettuce, pico and rajas, salsa crema and cheese all bundled up in a chewy flour tortilla (go ahead, grab a napkin). As for tacos, choose from Beef Picadillo with Cojita cheese, cilantro and onion, or beerbattered Cod with Chipotle crema, red cabbage and cilantro. We suggest eating in, but this friendly place even delivers.
Best Mediterranean LAYLA'S FALAFEL
Some days you find yourself running around completing errands and knocking to-do's off the endless list when you suddenly realize that you are starving—and you need food now. That's when you take our voters' advice and head over to Layla's. Drop in just as you are and have your choice of filling and flavorful meals. You can build your favorite bowl, with rice or salad, maybe some falafel or chicken shawarma, certainly hummus and any of a dozen toppings, such as pickled cucumbers and tahini. They also offer platters, so you don't have to make any decisions—just a plate of, say a chicken kabob, and french fries, falafel, hummus, pita and baklava. There's even plenty for vegetarians and meatlovers alike to find delicious. Both are likely to agree on the tabbouleh salad, if not the marinated lamb. Whether you go for a plate, skewer or wrap, you can be sure of one thing: You won't leave hungry. Actually, it will be your most satisfying stop of the day.

Best Ice Cream GOFER ICE CREAM
Ice cream and summertime are perfect partners. They just go together. Now, how you want your ice cream is up for debate. Some like soft serve, some a classic scoop, and some prefer their ice cream smashed deliciously between two giant cookies. We're not playing favorites; they're all good choices. Our voters also agreed that the best place to pick up this treat is at Gofer Ice Cream, which offers lots of choices— including smoothies and slushes. Enjoy this sweet way to beat the heat.

Best Burger LITTLE PUB
Little Pub has a bit of magic. Walking in from a busy day and all its worries and urgent matters and the bright summer sun, you suddenly decompress. It's like a time portal. Inside, it's all handhewn beams and ironwork, inviting you to put down your day and relax, like nothing else matters. It's just you, your friends around the table, and that glorious, juicy burger in front of you. Yes, there are endless comfortfood options on the menu (including amazing salads), but our voters zeroed in on the burgers, and for good reason. We're drawn to the "Three Hands," which is a burger topped with melted cheddar cheese, crispy fried onions, creamy mac-n-cheese and red hot buffalo sauce. It tells you a lot about the place, like you can be yourself and put your concerns aside. Just be you and have a good time. They even have live music on certain nights. Oh, and vegetarians, yes, there is a veggie burger that holds it own with roasted peppers, jack cheese and a zippy cilantro-chipotle aioli. Enjoy your escape.
Best Pizza
COLONY GRILL
Date night, kids in tow, gathering of old high-school buddies, girls' night out—it all just works at Colony Grill. It's that kind of spot, in that it works for everybody who wants to ease up and enjoy a good bite. It seems that our voters agree. They exhaulted the place to the top, and we're guessing it's because the thin-crust pies are irresistible. Yes, you can order a classic cheese with hot oil or the famous salad pizza, which is best when you really can't decide if you want pizza or salad (you get both). We're also intrigued by the Breakfast Pie, made to order with bacon or sausage, egg and cheese. We know this place knows what it's doing—it's been around since 1935, rooted in appealing to the bar crowd (pizza in this hand, beer in that one). Now, its classic pizza appeals to everyone, and draws crowds in lower-, mid-, and upper-Fairfield County. Standing out among the many pizza places is no easy feat, but to do so for decades? That is impressive, and Colony wins people over year after year.

Sometimes you meet up with friends who simply don't agree on what kind of food they want. The only win here is a diner, which has tons of options—and our voters chose Orem's Diner as their favorite. Best Desserts BE CHOCOLAT
Belgian chocolate. We thought that might get your attention. But there's more: Beligan chocolate handcrafted in small batches by a talented chocolatier, Chef Benoit. Our Best Of voters told us about their favorite place, BE Chocolat. Not only are the options in dark, milk and white chocolate delicious, but they're also beautiful. Benoit's artistry is on full display with the special collections, such as LOVE, a chocolate heart-shaped shell filled with an assortment of chocolate hearts. With special consideration to pairings, such as beer, BE Chocolat has fun. Consider the Chocolate Tasting and Pairing Class for six to twenty people, where you learn about creating and tasting the complexities of chocolate. Or perhaps you want to try the Chocolate Making Class. Or simply just stop by. The adorable shop is located in a quiet, leafy corner of Greenfield Hills. The next time your sweet tooth tries to get your attention, listen.

Best Juice Bar GREEN & TONIC
There's vegetarian, then there's plant-based kitchen. That's Green & Tonic. At this cafe, with eat-in or take-out options, you can chose from a selection of prepared options, including soups, salads, bowls and sandwiches. If we might suggest one, consider the Curry Chickpea wrap in collard greens—more filling than you might guess. Otherwise, if you want to take control, you can build your own acai bowl, choosing from such toppings as shredded coconut, granola, and chia seeds. If you're in the mood to hand over the driver's seat, try a smoothie bowl from the menu; perhaps the Coco Haze with a mix of coconut, banana, granola and cacao. They also have an impressive selection of fresh juices, like the Green Monster, with cucumber, celery, green apple, kale, ginger, romaine, spinach, lemon, parsley and spirulina. Fresh and healthy. Perhaps a side of Kelp Noodles?

Barcelona Wine Bar is one of those places that everyone can agree on. It has something for everyone's appetite, but it also just has a welcoming way of putting one and all at ease—like a mini vacation. And when on vacation, live like a local. Here, that means ordering the table at least one charcuterie and cheese and plenty of tapas (say, Pulpo, artichoke purée and salsa verde or fava beans, mint, leeks, crispy Serrano, smoked Maldón). Also, be sure to make a selection or two from the very impressive wine list. The options are endless, so whether your favorite type is a Sauvignon Blanc or a Pinot Noir or even a dry Sherry, you can narrow down to a few varieties to sip. If you can't decide, you can't lose with the sangria, of course. Order the table a pitcher, perhaps the Rioja wine, elderflower, citrus-infused dark rum and guava nectar. Who wouldn't agree to that?

Luxe Leisurewear + Men’s Fashion + Men’s Shoes + Women’s Fashion MITCHELLS/RICHARDS
Are we suprised that our Best Of voters recognized the pillars of high fashion in Fairfield County? Not in the least. Everyone turns to Mitchells in Westport and Richards in Greenwich for the absolute best designer clothes and shoes for any day of the week and any occasion. Not only do these family-owned sister stores offer high-style designs, but they also offer unmatched personal assistance. You'll find plenty of choices—Tom Ford, Valentino, Bottega Veneta, Chloe, and dozens more—and expert help making your finai selections. Expect to be pampered all along the way.

ESPADRILLES
When you're not sure what to wear, an espadrille can come in very handy. Today's choices range from your classic look to metallic braids to an equestrian influence to a coastal vibe with scallop edge in Latte. If you're really undecided, there's even a clear strap that will work with nearly anything and a Raffia Straw fringe that is as beachy as possible.
PLATFORM
Level up in the crowd without having to wear heels this summer. Pick up a platform shoe with options like the Raised Bit Comfort Slide in biscotto or the eye-catching Satin Cord Wedge with Studs in champagne.
SLIDES
The Birkenstock Arizona EVA—the signature pool sandal—is sedate in white and poppy in Popcorn yellow.

Best Closet Organization CALIFORNIA CLOSETS
What is real luxury? It's in the way you feel. Having an organized space is an essential element to feeling calm, comfortable and confident. The trustworthy way of moving from cluttered chaos to streamlined storage is California Closets. Our voters recognize that the custom-designed spaces bring order to their carefully curated collection of clothes, shoes, bags and the many accessories. Aside from being able to build outfits with ease, an organized closet also protects your investments—no snags, no wrinkles, no dust, no fading. It includes layout, lighting and overall look of the system, too, whether that's pure white and minimalist or something with lots of ornate, layered details. The team works with you, including a consultation, 3D digital model to review, custom creation and professional installation. You might like it so much in your bedroom that you'll look at your home office, mudroom or family room to see if they, too, need to be transformed for the better.

Best Lighting CHLOE WINSTON LIGHTING DESIGN
Never underestimate the power of good lighting. Your favorite room is properly illuminated. Dark reading corners are suddenly aglow with a table lamp. The busy kitchen, always packed with your family looking to grab a bite of whatever you're cooking, is better because of brilliant task lighting. The entry? It has a gentle ceiling light to welcome guests. Our readers agreed by sending in vote after vote for Chloe Winston Lighting Design. We should add "again," because this popular shop wins year after year. You might say people have seen the light about lighting options. They turn to designer and upscale options in the showroom to imagine the possibilities at home. Plus, there's plenty of interior design help to make sure you have selections that will work. You'll know that you made the right choice when you feel good in your space—and you now have more than one favorite room.

Meet the GAME CHANGERS at the Forefront of Innovation in Westport
Something is stirring in Westport. As a wave of New Yorkers relocated to our town during (and since) the pandemic, we have gained more than traffic; we have gained a group of game changers whose brainchildren are making an impact locally and globally, and giving Westport the electric vibe of the city that never sleeps—only in a semi-sleepy town with a beach. Read on to meet some of our impressive new residents.

NO STONE UNTURNED
Philanthropic Phenoms
When did you move to Westport?
Sandra: In late 2020, as part of the mass exodus out of the city.
Becca: I also moved here in 2020 from NYC.
Michelle: I am the only one who did not move during the pandemic. We actually moved out to Westport in 2016.
Alexandra: I moved in the summer of 2021, partly because of Covid, and partly because I found out I was pregnant with identical twin girls and my family would be doubling in size!
Why did you choose Westport?
Michelle: My husband was recruited by a cardiology practice in Fairfield and we took the leap of moving here sans kids.
Sandra: My family chose Westport because Michelle was here!
Becca: We started looking to leave the city and fell in love with Westport—the beach, the community, everything about it!
Alexandra: Is there another option?! From
the beach to the beautiful, historic homes— it’s such a special place and unlike any other suburb.
Tell us about No Stone Unturned. No Stone Unturned was founded to plan luxury shopping events in Fairfield County for charity. All participating brands commit at least 15% of sales to the selected charity. Our goal is to become the Fairfield County version of “Super Saturday” in the Hamptons.
When did you launch your organization and why?
We launched in June 2022. Our purpose was to bring awareness to lesser known and often local causes and charities. We also wanted to offer women a more fun and intimate shopping experience with friends. Online shopping is great but so impersonal. Our customers love a great excuse to shop while giving back to the community.
Tell us about recent events: Our first event took place in June 2022 at a private residence and benefitted the Partnership to End Human Trafficking, a safe house for human trafficking survivors in Bridgeport. Our second event took place on Mother’s Day in Westport at Swoon art gallery and Penfield Collective in Sconset Square.
How can people get involved?
If you are interested in planning an event, please reach out to us! If you are a local brand, retailer or charity we would love to connect!
What do you love about Westport?
The laid-back casual vibe and easygoing energy. It’s the perfect beach town with incredible restaurants, an outdoor music venue and the most gorgeous scenery. It’s also a community where people care about each other, our town and the world.
Luxury shopping outing with friends and a feel-good mission? No Stone Unturned is the remedy to the solitary, materialistic woes of online spending sprees.

DOTTIE
Arvia Few— Founder/CEO and Certified Matchmaker
www.thedottieclub.com
@arviafew @thedottieclub
Podcast: Dottie’s Houseer
Cupid’s Boss Lady
Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match… Young Black people can find cultural and biased algorithms especially frustrating.
Arvia Few is here to make connections that shouldn’t be left to chance.
When and why did you move to Westport?
We moved here in June of 2021. My husband runs a clean tech company in Connecticut. It was important that we were in a town that had culture, arts, a community and a direct commute to the city.
When and why did you launch Dottie?
DOTTIE was founded to create space for young Black people to connect socially and romantically. The pandemic, online dating apps rooted in bias, and evolving cultural norms have amplified the challenge for connection. In 2021, I became a certified matchmaker and founded DOTTIE. The state of Black families, marriages and opportunities for wealth creation is at a critical crossroads, and I am determined to be part of the solution!
Tell us about Dottie. DOTTIE, named after my mother and grandmother, is a concierge matchmaking service and private social club for Black people in their 20s and 30s. Every member is vetted by our membership committee. We rely on wordof-mouth referrals and have amassed a waitlist of over 900 people and have members in every major U.S. city.
Do you have an anecdote about a great match?
Recently we matched two amazing individuals who lived less than two miles apart, attended the same study-abroad program at the same time, moved in similar circles, and had never met. We set them up on a blind date and the rest is history.
Are you commuting or working from Westport?
I work from home, which is great! It’s easy to connect with clients via Zoom. I occasionally travel to meet clients in person and I travel for our curated events.
How has that transition been?
Amazing. We are truly grateful because our daughter works in NYC and our son, who recently graduated from Duke, will also be in NYC. We never imagined we would be close to our children once they graduated from college.
What do you love about Westport?
Westport is an incredibly open and inclusive community where we have encountered goodhearted individuals, engaging conversations and enjoyable moments (especially beach sunsets).
Holding & Heart
Matt
TRINITY PLACE HOLDINGS
Matt Messinger— President, CEO and Director
When and why did you move to Westport?
Summer 2016, initially as a weekend house purchase. We had loved the area since attending a wedding here years ago. We liked it so much that we quickly changed schools and made Westport our primary residence—this was a big change
for me given that I’d spent nearly my entire life in NYC and had only recently gotten a driver’s license!
Tell us about Trinity Place Holdings. We have been transforming a former retail company into a public real estate investment,
asset management and holding company. We’ve just completed development of Jolie: 77 Greenwich, arguably the best quality, new luxury condo building currently selling in lower Manhattan. We also developed and recently opened a new public elementary school in partnership with the City and State of NY.
Tell us about your philanthropic work. Most of it is focused on the Children’s Museum of Manhattan (CMOM), whose board I have chaired for several years. I visited frequently with my two children when they were younger, and became interested in the groundbreaking outreach the Museum was doing: partnering with homeless shelters to reach the most forgotten and vulnerable kids with CMOM’s programming, reconnecting kids with their non violent incarcerated parents, and partnering with world-class institutions. As the museum and its mission have outgrown its current building, my experience has proven useful. We are repurposing a landmarked Carrera and Hastings former church on Central Park West, which will be an amazing sustainability story in itself.
What do you love about Westport?
I love last-minute runs along the water, and still get a kick out of seeing a fox run across our property or an egret or eagle flying overhead (as do my dogs!).
I love Walrus Alley, The Little Barn and Gold’s Deli. As a former competitive junior chess player, I love that there’s a chess club at the library. I am learning about and enjoying the long tradition of the arts in Westport. Raising kids in and around Westport is pretty great, too!
Messinger is a business and real estate wiz who knows the real magic is in giving back.

CAILINI COASTAL
Meg Young, Founder & Creative Director
cailinicoastal.com @cailinicoastal
Home Design Innovator
Meg Young conceptualized Cailini Coastal while living in Southern California. The aesthetic feels like Newport, RI, meets Newport, CA, with a unique flair that is Meg’s alone—but now can be yours too, here in Westport, CT.
When and why did you move to Westport?
We moved in August 2022.
My husband and I both grew up in the New York area. We lived in Southern California for a combined 18 years and moved to raise our daughters closer to our families.
When did you open Cailini Coastal and why?
CC launched at the height of the pandemic from my garage. As a lover of the coastal design aesthetic, I saw an opportunity for something new online. The industry is dominated by a couple of mainstream stores, and all of my peers in California had homes that all looked like each other. I sought to create a destination that offered premium and beautiful pieces that are unique.
Wedding Wiz
This is not your mother’s bridal chain…Stylish, playful and daring brides—look no further than Lovely Bride for the dress of your dreams.
LOVELY BRIDE
Lanie
List, Founder/CEO
lovelybride.com lanielist.com @lovelybride @lanielist
When did you move to Westport?
We moved to Westport in July of 2020.
When and where did you open Lovely Bride?
We opened our first Lovely Bride shop in the West Village in 2010. Today we are 19 stores strong across major metro cities in the U.S. and one in London.
Tell us about Cailini Coastal.
It’s an e-commerce destination that offers luxury coastal home furnishings and décor. Over 100 items are exclusive to us, with many more in development. Our warehouse is in Norwalk and we’ll be opening our first store in early 2025 in CT!
What do you love about Westport?
The amazing public schools, the beach community, the great restaurants and downtown, access to the city. We’ve been fortunate to quickly meet kind, interesting people who share our values. The Westport area is simply beautiful—in all seasons!
Tell us about Lovely Bride. We call Lovely Bride an “exclusive, inclusive bride club.” We are welcoming, laid-back and fun, without being too casual. We have the most sought-after international designers that are not so “everywhere.” Fashionista called us “The cool girls’ bridal chain.”
What is in for brides this summer?
Brides are bringing the glamour lately! Very sexy silhouettes in luminous fabrics with lots of body-hugging draping. Lots of Vivienne Westwood inspiration.
Are you commuting to New York or working from Westport?
I’m lucky enough to have an office in downtown Westport so I can get out of the house. If I’m not working there, I’m traveling
to one of our locations. How has that transition been?
It has been slow but good. Our first choices weren’t always the best choices, but we are pivoting and finally settling in to what feels right for our family.
What do you love about Westport?
To me, Westport is the first coastal CT town far enough away from NYC that it can’t draught off what NYC has to offer. So Westport has its own ecosystem and I love that the most. Westport feels complete to me.

Play Pro
A sophisticated playspace that offers wine and WiFi for parents? Enough said…
When did you open the Wonder and why?
The first Wonder opened in Tribeca in 2019. Our mission is to bring more joy to familyhood. I just couldn’t plop down in some kids gym and sing the Itsy Bitsy Spider again. Parents deserve to have a space that is as appealing to them as it is to their kids. So that’s what we built! We now have locations in Westport, NYC and DC.
Tell us about The Wonder. We are a members club for families offering classes for kids and events for parents. Your kids can jump in a bounce house or take a class while you hang out with friends, send an email or have a glass of wine. And it looks like a place where you want to hang out, not haphazard primary colors and clowns.
What will be going on at The Wonder over the summer? Drop-off camp for 3’s, 4’s and 5’s! Your kids can walk the plank and search for pirate treasure, make magical mermaid potions (slime) or have a princess tea party. Also loads of special events: family movie night, food trucks, Go Fish tournaments, talks with experts…
THE WONDER
Sarah Robinson Founder/CEO
1200 Post Road East,Westport thewonder.fun @thewonder
When and why did you move to Westport?
We moved to Westport in May of 2020, deep in Covid. We thought we would spend the summer at the beach and go back to the city. We had two kids and I was pregnant with my third. We are still here and now have four kids!
You have adult offerings? We have a new networking series, Wonder Women. Our first Wonder Woman is Lydia Fenet, author of Claim Your Confidence. Part of the magic of becoming a parent is discovering how much YOU are capable of. Who are you as a person and what do you want to achieve in addition to being a parent? No one talks about that. It’s always dumbed down to How to Change a Diaper 101.
What do you love about Westport?
Shake Shack and the beach!

BODILY
Tovah Haim— Founder & CEO itsbodily.com @itsbodily
Mother’s Big Helper
Mandy Moore, Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt, Hilaria Baldwin, Adriana Lima, Karolina Kurkova, Brooklyn Decker, Megan Trainor—these are just a few moms who have turned to Bodily for the products and support they need after childbirth.
When and why did you move to Westport?
I gave birth to my second child on the day the city shut down with Covid. Because of the unknowns of the virus, I was sent home just 24 hours after a C-section. After 15 years living in NYC, we picked up and left for Litchfield County, with our two-day old baby and toddler in tow, hopped Airbnbs for three years, and moved into a rental in Westport last summer. We just moved into
our permanent home in Greens Farms and are over the moon happy.
When did you open Bodily and why?
Bodily (launched in 2019) was born out of my own postpartum experience—a lack of essential information, subpar products and societal taboos surrounding birth recovery and breastfeeding. Returning to my start up just ten days after a C-section made my situation even more challenging. With 65% of women in the US being breadwinners/co-breadwinners, I made it Bodily’s mission to destigmatize and support the female physiological experience.
Tell us what Bodily offers. We design and produce awardwinning nursing and pumping bras, we make postpartum kits, postpartum underwear and offer support for pregnancy loss. While our focus currently is on (longneglected) maternal health, our solutions empower women to live confidently in their bodies through the stages.
What do you love about Westport?
We first eyed Westport because we wanted to be close to the water, to have proximity to the city and be in a kid-friendly location. But we fell in love because of the vibrant restaurant scene, city-like amenities, and cultured and internationalleaning community. While we never imagined leaving the city, we could not be happier to be here. I (half-) joke to my husband that I desperately need an “I Love Westport” T-shirt.

PR Guru
Lisette Sand-Freedman and Brad Zeifman are the powerhouse owners of SHADOW PR. To understand why top brands turn to them to turn on the world to their wares, read on.
SHADOW
Lisette Sand-Freedman, Chief Visionary Officer/Co-Founder & Brad Zeifman, Co-Founder weareshadow.com @weareshadow
You are a couple? Last we checked!
Do you have kids?
We have two but we employ 100 Gen Z-ers so it feels like more.
When and why did you move to Westport?
We will be here full-time as of July but have been coming on weekends since February. We chose Westport because we’re still going to be in the office every week. It’s close enough to make that happen while being far enough for us to regain some long-lost sanity.
When and where did you start your company?
We started SHADOW 16 years ago out of Lisette’s tiny apartment in Chelsea. We had no idea what was coming.
What do you do?
We connect brands with their desired audiences through creative marketing, social media, influencer relations and good ol’ fashioned PR.
What sets you apart?
Our heart. We are obsessed with the work, and mediocrity makes us cringe!
Some of your biggest clients?
We’ve repped most of Main Street USA, including currently American Eagle, Aerie & Unsubscribed; Express; and the Pottery Barn brands. We just created a Super Bowl commercial with e.l.f cosmetics and Jennifer Coolidge—yes, she’s everything you want her to be and more!
Are you commuting to the city?
We are, but Brad will be commuting more often—bless him and his endless battery. I’ll be working from the backyard, thank you very much.
What do you love about Westport?
We cannot get over how nice everyone is and, although it is quiet here, people still have a little hustle in them. It’s the perfect mix for us.

Top Dentists
The Methodology Behind the List
To create our Top Dentists list, we relied on the experts from DataJoe, a leading software and research firm. Dental practitioners were chosen based on an online peer-voting process, which was facilitated by DataJoe. The final list is based on thousands of detailed evaluations of dental professionals.
SELECTION PROCESS
Summary
To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a dentist’s current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that dentist was excluded from the list. In addition, any dentist who has been disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board was excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.
Final Note
We recognize that there are many good dentists who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding dentists in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective dentists may not appear on the list.
Disclaimers
DataJoe uses best practices and exercises great care in assembling content for this list. DataJoe does not warrant that the data contained within the list are complete or accurate. DataJoe does not assume, and hereby disclaims, any liability to any person for any loss or damage caused by errors or omissions herein whether such errors or omissions result from negligence, accident, or any other cause.
