What’s the craziest place you’ve discovered by chance? A cabin in Montana, very close to the border with Idaho and Wyoming. The views of the mountains there still fascinate me to this day.

Guest Relations Manager, Weekapaug Inn What’s your travel-related guilty pleasure? I always have a list of must-try breakfast spots. There is nothing that a side of bacon and coffee can’t fix. Another is finding the most tacky fridge magnet to take back home. What food do you crave most when you’re traveling? Dessert. I love when I find a delicious matcha cheesecake. The best one I tried so far was at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Finish this sentence: A sensational travel experience always includes…getting lost! Who’s your favorite travel companion? My husband and Nayara (our shih-tzu). My mom always says that my dog has traveled more than her.
Favorite travel apps? Skiplagged and Skyscanner for last-minute flights and finding the best deals. Google Trips offers a curated list of places to visit based on your location and you can plan your whole day with it. Hotel Tonight and Booking.com for last-minute rooms. Where’s your hometown and what’s the coolest thing to see there? My hometown is Fajardo, Puerto Rico, on the east tip of the island, where you can see the Laguna Grande Bioluminescent Bay. There are only five Bio bays in the world and three of them are in Puerto Rico. Isn’t that amazing? What are your best tips for managing jet lag? Traveling overnight and taking Natural Calm magnesium.
What do you like to do during your vacation? I prefer to be active. I am the unapologetic human version of Dora the Explorer. When I am in a new place for few days, I do as much as I can. Then I take a day or two to recover from my vacation. What are your best tips for packing wisely? Check the weather of your destination and select a capsule wardrobe with three matching colors that you can mix and match.

Robles likes to be active during her travels so she prefers to relax on the plane. She brings motivational books, snacks, earbuds, her iPhone to watch Netflix, hand moisturizer and a neck pillow. And it wouldn’t be a vacation without her camera, gym clothes, sunscreen and pillow spray.

Given your profession in luxury hospitality, how do you choose your vacation destinations? I like adventures. I prefer last-minute trips at a bargain price. Hotels, bed-and-breakfasts or rental properties? Definitely hotels. It has to have a great gym facility. I am very picky when it comes to that. What’s the one place that tops your travel bucket list? Morocco. It has exotic and refined architecture, unbeatable symmetry, spices and bright colors. I can easily picture myself strolling around Agadir like a local.

I’m responsible for designing and maintaining the printed collateral for Ocean House Management Collection. I also ensure everything meets the brand and Forbes Five-Star standards. What’s your travel-related guilty pleasure? Reading fashion and art magazines. I always buy Vogue and Art In America before getting on a plane. What food do you crave most when you’re traveling? Since I travel mostly to San Francisco to visit family, my first stop is Chinese food at Henry’s Hunan Restaurant. It’s my favorite.

Tourist destinations or out-of-the-way local haunts? I’m not a big fan of large crowds; out-of-the-way haunts are better. Where’s your hometown and what’s the coolest thing to see there? Westerly, Rhode Island. You can’t miss the beautiful coastline and its beaches. Name your must-listens for a long trip. I listen to the great tenor saxophone player Greg Piccolo. Even though he’s my dad, his music moves me profoundly. He is a very talented man, and he performs during Sunday brunch at Ocean House. When you travel, do you prefer a beach, city or the country? I prefer a city for the culture— art museums, art galleries and live music venues. I also love being in the country for the
hiking, taking in the beautiful scenery and capturing photos. What do you like to do during your vacation? I enjoy being relaxed and not rushed. My job is filled with constant deadlines and it is nice not to push so much while on vacation. I’m an artist and painter, so I love taking photos for inspiration. I’m always observing. Describe a favorite vacation. When I visited my best friend and her family when they lived on an Indian reservation about an hour outside of Flagstaff, Arizona, I got to experience some of the Navajo culture. We took a trek through a slot canyon at Antelope Canyon and visited the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. My favorite part of the trip was going to the Grand Canyon. I experienced a stillness, a peace and quiet that is incomparable. Arizona’s landscape is otherworldly to me. Given your profession in luxury hospitality, how do you choose your vacation destinations? Word of mouth; I have many friends, family and coworkers who travel so it is easy to be inspired by their stories and pictures of places they’ve visited.

When you travel, do you prefer the beach, a city or the country? City first, and then the country. Local culture, food and wine are important to me, but I also enjoy the quiet of the countryside. What do you like to do during your vacation? I like to relax and be active. I’m an early riser so my ideal day includes going for a walk around town, a hike in the morning and an afternoon nap. Describe a favorite vacation? It was to Oregon wine country. Oregon produces some
What are your best tips for packing wisely? Roll your clothes so they don’t get wrinkled, or use Ziploc vacuum bags if you’re short on space. What’s the worst thing you forgot when packing for a getaway? One time we forgot a whole suitcase at home! Luckily it was the one with most of our toiletries and other items that were easily replaced. Now we count the number of bags, humans, and dogs when we travel to make sure nothing gets left behind ever again. Hotels, bed-and-breakfasts or rental properties? It depends on the length of stay; for longer trips we like to do rental properties so we can spread out and have a kitchen to prepare some meals, but for shorter stays we love the amenities that a hotel offers. After clearing security, what’s your must-purchase to take on a plane? Water and The Economist magazine. What’s the one place that tops your travel bucket list? Tokyo, and Sukiyabashi Jiro, the legendary threeMichelin-star sushi restaurant in the Tokyo subway.

For Artola, travel is a perfect time to recharge, so when she goes away, she always packs her Bluetooth speaker so she can listen to music, her neck pillow, earbuds, a warm vest, lip balm and a lacrosse ball so she “can use it to relieve muscle tension after a long flight.”

BRITISH COLUMBIA Clayoquot Wilderness Resort
Natural Resource Glacier National Park is perhaps the best known in British Columbia. It encompasses more than 520 square miles and 131 glaciers.
Golden Ticket There was a gold rush here, too. The Fraser Canyon Gold Rush started in 1857, with 30,000 people hoping to get rich quick.
When explorer James Cook sailed into the Pacific Northwest in the late 1700s, the people he met were the Nuu-chah-nulth, an indigenous community of the Pacific Northwest who respected the land and animal habitats. Their descendants, members of the Ahousaht First Nation, still live by the same cultural principles, so much so that in 2000, UNESCO Above: Menus designated part change with of the region as the seasons, while luxury the Clayoquot permeates Sound throughout the resort. Reserve. The designators called the region a “welcome refuge” with forested valleys that remain “untouched by logging or other industrial development.” Today, it’s possible to explore this area with far more creature comforts than Capt. Cook enjoyed. The Clayoquot Wilderness Resort offers eco-style safari resort access, working in partnership with the Ahousaht First Nation to ensure that daily tours and adventures are completed in a way that is sustainable and respectful of nature. For instance, full- and half-day
heli-activities can include dropping down to Kennedy Lake and exploring by way of kayaks with a wilderness guide, or checking out sea caves and following wolf tracks (again, with a guide) along a deserted beach. Clayoquot Wilderness Resort has just twenty-five guest tents, keeping the human footprint in the area to a minimum. Sixteen of the tents have waterfront views, while others are on a hillside or surrounded by 360-degree rainforest views. When the day’s adventures are done— perhaps a horseback ride, whale watching or fishing— guests can retire to the Healing Grounds Spa for a massage, or to a dinner of contemporary coastal cuisine featuring dishes such as tandoori salmon and Peace
County rack of lamb. The food, of course, is also sustainably harvested, with local fishermen and fishmongers bringing in the day’s catch. Other ingredients come from local foragers who know how to converse in the language of the Ahousaht First Nation, sourcing more than 100 wild foods from the rainforest and foreshore. It’s entirely possible, at the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, to spend an afternoon exploring the region the way Capt. Cook did hundreds of years ago, and then sit down to a meal that is completely in keeping with what he may have been offered as he met with indigenous people of the 1700s. As the UNESCO designators so aptly put it, the place is a “welcome refuge” indeed.

Fans of the PBS television series The Mind of a Chef will recognize the name David Kinch: His work led him to share the 2016 Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding culinary host. As with many celebrity cooking shows, this one helps viewers understand a chef’s point of view. For Kinch, that means cooking with ingredients that have a “sense of place”—new

contemporary California, in particular. His is the same type of focus on terroir that has made California’s Napa and Sonoma counties the heart of

American winemaking. Today Kinch is executive chef at Manresa, a restaurant in Los Gatos, California, that has earned three Michelin stars—making it one among just more than 120 restaurants worldwide to earn that distinction. He once described a menu offering as “a complete tomato and fruit dish where we celebrate diversity, color, size, shape, different cultivators, the complexities and variety of tomatoes,” before adding that it was his take on the humble tomato salad. Manresa’s menu is infused with similar offerings on a rotating basis. Each night is a distinctive tasting experience of the finest ingredients available. This is accomplished by working with local farmers to source from them not just the best products of the season, but the freshest of that same day. The team at Manresa takes a similar approach to wine, with master sommelier Jim Rollston paying particular attention to Old World French vintages from Burgundy, the

J
onathan Feiler was once a rising young chef at Boston’s bygone legend of French cuisine, Maison Robert. It was there that his wine enlightenment took root. The way Feiler tells the tale, a manager he knew at the restaurant was partial to Guigal Crozes-Hermitage, and it made him curious. His training at the Culinary Institute of America had covered wine but Feiler’s thirst for knowledge had only since grown. Why, he wondered does a connoisseur crave a specific red from the Northern Rhône region? They shared a glass, chatted about it and compared notes. It was then, after a final sip, that Feiler knew his future would be in viticulture. He never looked back. Today, Feiler shares his insights daily as Wine Director for OHM Collection. Together with the Director of Culinary Education, they make the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts (CWCA) at Ocean House unique in New England—and in the wider hospitality industry—for redefining guest experiences through culinary discovery. The notion proves tempting even before cooking class begins. The CWCA itself looks like a spread from Architectural Digest with its mix of stone, glass and antique wood, framing

a gorgeous Gaggenau demonstration kitchen. The space is purpose-built for food and wine education, pursued in an easygoing way that makes even shy guests happy to join in. It is in this setting that the culinary team at Ocean House works closely with Feiler to develop classes that capture the imagination. “We’ve launched a new set of educational experiences in the CWCA that are more hands-on than anything previously done, with an increasing focus on families and younger guests in general,” says Daniel Hostettler, President and Group Managing Director for OHM Collection. It’s clear from a sampling of the CWCA’s spring and summer 2019 classes that creativity is first on the menu.
The Hot List
Given the CWCA’s new hands-on approach, guests are no longer spectators at demonstrations but rather participants in the creation of many diverse dishes. This grew from past deep dives into regional offerings and “culinary tourism,” as requested by OHM guests. New ideas were formulated, then elevated to the level of Relais & Châteaux élan that Ocean House guests expect.
“We’ve gone back to the fundamentals of preparing and cooking a gourmet meal with others,” Hostettler says. “It has really caught on, not just with guests but with our local community. You don’t get the recipe until the end. The chef explains the history of the dish, its ingredients, then everyone rolls up their sleeves, puts aprons on and gets to work making the dish together.” Along the way guests learn kitchen knife skills, seasoning and different cooking techniques. It’s so much fun that people hardly realize they’re gaining useful knowledge. Underscoring the ever-changing “curriculum” is an authenticity that the team has baked into everything at the CWCA. “We’ve taken any hint of pretentiousness out,” Hostettler says. “People want to be comfortable. We’ve put a lot of thought into that.” Whether you visit in May or August, here’s what guests can expect this season at the CWCA. BOLD PAIRINGS White with fish and red with meat? Not necessarily. The CWCA is teaching guests to drink what they like, and suggesting inspired pairings to surprise and delight the palate.

Q: What’s the best wine you’ve ever had? A: That’s easy. It was a 1990 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone. Blew my mind. It had textures, flavors and aromas I had never experienced. We carry it in the Ocean House cellar. Q: What’s your own go-to summer wine? A: There’s a little nugget of land in Chablis called Saint Bris, the only place in Burgundy where they’re allowed to grow Sauvignon Blanc. It’s between $9 and $12 a bottle. It’s an easy-drinking wine with some complexity. Nothing fancy, but off the beaten path for sure. Q: What wine and junkfood pairing is your guilty pleasure? A: I love sparkling wine, especially cava or prosecco, with potato chips. Or even [with] oven pizza. It magically transforms those foods. —OM

While the chef leads foraging expeditions and classes, the sommelier is equally busy with his own fascinating tutorials. The Old World/ New World Chardonnay and Cabernet session examines the meaning and importance of terroir in wine. The Organic, Biodynamic and Natural Winemaking class is an immersion in sustainable vineyard practices. Expect summery white wines in June with a good look at Sauvignon Blanc, then a tour of obscure white varietals with zesty flavors and aromas that can stand the heat. Deep summer gives way to light reds like Syrah from the Rhône region that pair well with barbeque. It’s endlessly surprising, and guests walk away from wine events knowing “people, place and grape,” as Feiler explains, and a sense memory of the wine’s complex nose and flavors. It’s an education in geography and history with top notes of pure delight. “The chef and I bounce our class ideas off of each other,” Feiler says. “It helps us each put together stronger seasonal classes. There’s a lot of creativity and collaboration in taking complex dishes and making them totally accessible.” A fine way of explaining the magic happening now at the CWCA.

Brittany Borghesi, who handles much of the interior design work for OHM properties, notes the particular benefits of the duplex layout: “The duplex suites are perfect for families because of the floor plan; the bedrooms are downstairs and the kitchen and living room are on the upper level. Parents can still enjoy their evening upstairs, even after children’s bedtime.

“This arrangement is also great for two couples or a girls’ weekend getaway,” continues the designer. “Having two levels provides for privacy as well as togetherness.” The particulars of the living spaces speak to thoughtful design for a great getaway. “The fullsized and fully equipped kitchen is ready for cooking meals or preparing treats when guests choose to dine in,” notes Borghesi. Guests need not bring their own groceries, either. “Order through our concierge before your arrival to have them waiting for you in your suite so you can enjoy cooking together.” Leisure-friendly details of each duplex include fireplaces in the living area and in the master bedroom. Roomy, deep-seated sectional sofas in the living space enable guests to curl up with a book, watch TV or stretch out for a peaceful nap accompanied by the SONOS sound system tuned to their favorite music. Both levels also provide private outdoor terraces, with views to the bay—and to the rising sun in morning and the starry sky at night. The master bedroom is equipped with a king bed, and the second bedroom is flexibly furnished: twin beds for guests with children, or a second king-sized accommodation. Each level has a full bath. Generous storage spaces— large closets and roomy bureaus—make the suites well suited to extended stays. “There is plenty of room for two couples, a group of friends, or family with kids to stow their clothing and gear,” says Borghesi. “The square footage—the suites are 1,250 square feet overall—gives everyone room to spread out.”

SEASIDE TERRACE Befitting its closeness to OH! Spa and the pool, Seaside Terrace specializes in serving a new vegetarian and vegan menu at breakfast and lunch. Guests start the day with a cup of locally roasted Dave’s Coffee. Avocado toast is the most popular breakfast, but try the berry bowls, local Narragansett Creamery’s Greek Yogurt adorned with jewel-like fruits and nuts, and in the Chocolate Bowl, some chopped chocolate (70 percent cacao). The signature green smoothie transforms spinach and kale into a succulent elixir. For lunch, grilled vegetable pizza, topped with the chef’s blend of cheeses is garnished with a tumble of baby nasturtiums, amaranth and herbs. There’s a full bar, serving bloodies, bellinis, mocktails, and local Grey Sails and Two Roads brews on tap.

SECRET GARDEN A champagne bar of playful, exclusive luxury, decked out in Veuve Clicquot yellow swag, this balcony is hidden behind boxwood hedges and gives an expansive view of the shore. Relaxing on a cushioned wicker couch or perched under an umbrella at a hightop, guests sip Swimming Pool Veuve Clicquot Rich cocktails on ice, such as sparkling rosé with pomegranate and lime. Or they order an iconic yellow bottle of Veuve Clicquot to pair with artisan finger food— mini hot dogs on brioche buns, and cheese and charcuterie plates, presented in grand Ocean House style. DUNE COTTAGE This private beachside Caribbean-inspired cottage is for resort guests and members taking a break from water and beach sports (or reposing on a beach bed). Tucked at the edge of the dunes, the cottage’s shaded wood deck sits right on the beach. Tacos are favorites—mojo pulled chicken with mango coleslaw or hot lobster salad with avocado and papaya. Healthy choices include quinoa, kale and fruit salads while nachos, pizzas, burgers and hot dogs keep the kids happy. Quick, easy and casual is the theme here, where beautifully presented meals compete with a picture postcard setting and a host of activities. But since everyone wants to eat outside in summer, there is something for everyone. Plus, you can keep it all in the family, as kids menus are available at all venues.
This just in! Weekapaug Inn has opened a new dinner spot. The Brasserie, a traditional French tavern, is now serving quick and casual dishes. Think roasted chicken, moules frites and steak tartare. “It’s good, honest food for those who don’t want to be too formal,” says the resort’s innkeeper. The atmosphere is lively and service is prompt in the twentyseat restaurant. A recent weekly specials menu draws on local seasonal ingredients and includes coq au vin (chicken braised in red wine, with mushrooms), flûte en croûte (baked in puff-pastry), cote de boeuf (rib-eye steak) and bouillabaisse. On Sundays, the tradition of Family Pasta Night continues, with family-style sides—for example, whipped potatoes topped with Vermont cheddar, wild rice pilaf, sautéed kale and roasted carrots—designed to be shared. Desserts, seasonal cakes and pies, are displayed on a white sideboard under glass domes, tempting guests. (We dare you to resist). “There will be a mix of classic American and French,” says the innkeeper. And no need to worry; The Brasserie will always serve burgers, lobster mac and cheese, and, of course, New England clam chowder. —EK
THE SEAROOM DECK At lunch, the second-story porch off the SeaRoom gives an unrestrained view of Weekapaug Inn’s idyllic view of Quonochontaug Pond, moored sailboats, clammers and the ocean beyond. At dinner, it offers the wide open, star-filled sky above and lights reflecting on the water below. Guests and locals sit down with a mug of New England Clam Chowder, order artisan tacos and make plans for fun. The ground-level terrace is the spot for breakfast, with a menu that makes everyone happy—blueberry pancakes, eggs Benedict, and debuting this summer, a lobster omelet. If lobster is on your must-try list, at lunch order the outstanding lobster salad sandwich—luscious bits of knuckle and tail bound in mayonnaise. The burger, a patty of grilled Louis Family Farms grass-fed beef, is topped with Vermont cheddar. After July, look for local tomato gazpacho, bursting with flavor. Whole lobster is served at dinner. THE LAWN Chair-side service: There are no better words when you’re sitting in an Adirondack chair on the Inn’s sweeping lawn. Sip a frosé (slushy rosé) or non-alcohol Seedlip, distilled from fruit and botanicals. Parents often nosh on grilled corn with roasted red pepper and ricotta while keeping their eyes on kids searching for the fairy houses tucked among the native blueberries and beach plums.

Off the Menu, a twenty-eight-foot food truck, will bring Ocean House’s famous New England clam chowder and hot-buttered and cold salad lobster rolls, among other offerings, to an event near you. A bride and groom create a classic New England wedding at Ocean House that honors their heritage and the place where their love story began

N
atalie Kruse and Colby Catania grew up in different parts of Connecticut but met on the competitive United States Tennis Association circuit in high school. They were friendly growing up, but after a chance meeting one summer during college, romance blossomed. The couple visited Watch Hill often during that season, and on one of those visits they witnessed a wedding at Ocean House. Natalie recalls turning to Colby and asking, “Can you imagine how amazing it would be to have your wedding here?” Fast-forward several years to when the couple was engaged and looking at venues in Newport; Natalie’s mom asked if they had considered Ocean House. “We looked at each other and drove straight there. When we walked in, Colby teared up and said, ‘We’re having our wedding here’,” remembers Natalie. The couple wanted a classic New England wedding that honored their roots, so they enlisted the help of Alexandra Denniston, Meetings and Special Events Manager at Ocean House, to help them plan their wedding weekend and coordinate the elegant affair for them and their ninety-seven guests. “From the beginning, Ali and the team at OH helped with so many details, from planning our ceremony near the water to the amazing vendors that

made our day so special,” says Natalie. The bride and groom stayed in the Atlantic Suite, which has two balconies and a patio that overlook the ocean and sprawling property. “We felt like royalty there,” says Natalie, who on the morning of her wedding day hosted a buffet breakfast for her bridal party in the suite. One of her bridesmaids led a yoga class on the deck, and the groomsmen played golf and enjoyed a casual lunch in the billiards room. By evening, everyone gathered for the ceremony on the East Lawn, “with its lush surroundings and a water view that is stunning,” says Denniston. Faith Leitner, a harpist who plays frequently at Ocean House, performed during the ceremony and cocktail hour. “Faith was playing in the lobby the day we looked at Ocean House, and she reminded us of the moment we realized we wanted to get married there,” says Natalie. After the ceremony, guests made their way to the Seaside Terrace for a festive cocktail hour followed by dinner and dancing late into the night in the Ballroom. A palette of blush and gold tones and gorgeous tables designed by Yumiko from Hana Floral adorned the Ballroom. Arrangements with colorful roses, peonies and greenery placed among mercury glass rose-gold votives
of all sizes gave the space a sophisticated flair. “Yumiko was amazing and thought of everything, from making a custom flower collar for our dog, Zoey, to a beautiful round of white flowers placed on the grass around us during the ceremony in lieu of a traditional arch,” says Natalie. Guests enjoyed a delicious seasonal menu, a special touch Ocean House offers for all their wedding events. “Ocean House went above and beyond for us. They even worked with a local business in Watch Hill to make customized chocolate truffles that went perfectly with our cake,” recalls Natalie. After dinner, the band, Sultans of Swing, which Denniston introduced to the couple, sprang into action. “Everyone was on the dance floor from start to finish—it was a great dancing crew,” says Denniston. As a parting gift, guests took home a selection of flavored Bar Harbour popcorn— the couple’s favorite snack—as well as a jar of pink Himalayan sea salt for good luck. “Our wedding was everything I imagined and more,” says Natalie. “I can truthfully say it was the happiest day of my life, in part because of everything Ali and the Ocean House team did to make our day so special.”

ristin and Derek grew up going to Watch Hill with their families, so Ocean House always had special meaning for them. “Kristin and Derek wanted a destination wedding with a Rhode Island coastal vibe,” says Ocean House’s Alexandra Denniston, who helped plan the Labor Day weekend celebration. The festivities began on Friday, with a seaside cocktail reception. Saturday morning fun included yoga on the beach, golf and shopping. That evening, for the rehearsal dinner, everyone gathered for a clambake at Dune Cottage, where tables topped with blue

checkered tablecloths and centerpieces infused with lemons, and a steel drum trio, set the tone for an enjoyable time. The ceremony was held beachside on Sunday afternoon, with a beautiful archway marking the altar and a lush floral aisle. A highlight included the passing around of the couple’s rings, which were tied to a nautical rope, so everyone could give a silent blessing. Guests then made their way to the Seaside Terrace for cocktails and light bites, then to a tent on the South Lawn—adorned with sparkling chandeliers and full-sized trees—for dinner and dancing. The night
ended in the Ballroom, where a deejay and open bar waited. “It was definitely our dream day. Everything was so special, and the combination of a beautiful location, Ali’s ideas, planning and attention to detail made it perfect,” says Kristin. Perhaps the most serendipitous moment was when Ocean House resident artist Russ Kramer happened upon the nuptials, set up his easel and painted the ceremony in real time. “It was just magical,” says Kristin, of the oil painting that now hangs in the couple’s living room.

helsey and Drew began dating at eighteen. Together ever since, they now reside in New York City while their families have summer homes in Rhode Island. “It was important to us and our families that we be married in Rhode Island, and The Weekapaug Inn really spoke to us,” explains Chelsey. According to Group Meetings & Special Events Manager Lauren DiStefano, who helped Chelsey and Drew plan their nuptials, the couple wanted a wedding that reflected the ambiance of the Inn. “The Inn is elegant in the most subtle way,“ says DiStefano. “It is reminiscent of a summer home that has been in the family for decades. It’s understated and intimate.” Festivities kicked off Friday evening with a casual cocktail party in the SeaRoom, a stunning space with a panoramic view of Quonochontaug Pond

and Block Island Sound. More than half of Chelsey and Drew’s wedding guests attended the welcome reception, which concluded with s’mores around the firepit on the Guest Lawn. On Saturday, guests enjoyed yoga, sailing, swimming, boating on the pond and lawn games. The ceremony, also in the SeaRoom, was followed by a cocktail hour by the pool at Fenway Cottage, where oysters and Bourbon Slush cocktails, a Lyman family recipe, were served. The reception was held underneath a tent on the Event Lawn. The tent design, a collaboration between Ryan Designs and Hana Floral, evoked an organic, natural setting that mimicked the palate and style of the Inn and its natural surroundings. Tall grasses were used in centerpieces and hanging installations, while subtle pops of light pink and purple were sprinkled
throughout. Hanging rattan light fixtures in various shapes and sizes added to the dramatic scene. Once seated, guests found name cards etched on sea glass and gifts of aprons embroidered with the coordinates of the Inn. All were served a traditional New England lobster boil, complete with clam chowder, seasonal salad, lobster with drawn butter, littleneck clams, steamed potatoes, corn on the cob and jalapeñocheddar cornbread. An after-party followed around the pool, where guests enjoyed tacos from OHM’s Off the Menu food truck. “Everyone at the Weekapaug Inn was so accommodating and helpful, and the whole weekend was seamless and stress-free,” says Chelsey. “Most of all, it was amazing to have our wedding somewhere that was really true to us.”

is name is Sebastian. He’s ten, maybe eleven years old, and has been vacationing with his family at the Weekapaug Inn for the past five years or so, always
racing down to the beach to go seine fishing soon after he arrives. The staff lowers nets that are about twenty feet long and four feet high, then walks a loop in the water, scooping up everything along the way. Back at the beach, kids like Sebastian see what was collected and help create an aquarium tank before releasing the fish back to sea. “He is so enthusiastic about it, he has containers and bubblers,” says Mark Bullinger, the resident Naturalist and Director of Recreation at Weekapaug Inn. “He is down there pretty much non-stop, and he’s had some pretty dramatic tanks. He’ll gather sand and rocks and seaweed and create an aquarium. Every day, he’s stalking it, and other kids get wrapped up in it.”

It’s often surprising to guests of Ocean House— who share recreational privileges with guests at Weekapaug Inn and Watch Hill Inn—how much there is for kids to do at the resorts. Louis Shapazian, Director of Member Relations and Guest Experience, says: “Younger visitors are given a great deal of thought and attention,” and it all begins when you check-in. Upon arrival, younger children can select a toy from The Dandy, a rolling boat wagon. Once in the room, they will find a personalized welcome card addressed to them along with kid-sized bathrobes for those up to ten years old. Added perks include bath toys, special soaps, seasonal games, candies and snacks. Babies also receive bibs and a cashmere blanket for the crib. Among the many activities geared for the little ones, one in particular tends to capture even the youngest of imaginations at Ocean House. “They love the art scavenger hunt on our property at Ocean House,” Shapazian says.

“They search for painted items that are on the walls or the floors, and then they get a prize at the end. That’s very popular. The children sometimes do them multiple times.” Indeed, the scavenger hunts are just one among many activities and amenities that the resorts offer to make even the youngest guests feel special. The SandCastles program, a summer camp for children five to ten years old (give or take) runs daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again from 6 to 9 p.m. on weekends, between June and September. The program includes lunch or dinner as well as such activities as making animal puppets, painting rocks, learning to paddleboard and how to seine fish and so much more. “There is a theme each day: beach walks, crafts, beach Olympics, things like that,” Shapazian says. “They’ll set up courses out on the back grass, or on a rainy day they’ll go to our movie theater” for a family-friendly movie, or two. There are kids’ menus at most restaurants on both properties, and for food-loving families who want to mix a little learning in with their fun, some private cooking classes at the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts can be tailored for even the youngest chefs to participate. “We have flatbread classes, and they can be geared toward children,” Shapazian says. Over at Weekapaug Inn, Bullinger says, there’s everything from kayaks and paddleboards sized for children of all ages, along with life jackets to match. Kids as young as three or four years old can participate. There’s also crabbing at Weekapaug Inn, beneath the bridge at the resort’s parking lot. “One of our staff is in chest waders in the stream, and we go out with raw chicken drumsticks on strings, and the kids toss them in,” Bullinger says. “The oil that floats off, the crabs can smell it a mile away. Our goal there is to get blue crabs, which are feisty, so there’s a lot of excitement when we pull them in and get them in the bucket. We make sure nobody sticks their fingers in there—blue crabs will bite—but they’re real crowd-pleasers. It’s a lot of fun.” Additional activities at Weekapaug Inn include stargazing through a telescope (you can see Jupiter and Saturn), model rocket building (they launch, too, about 400 feet into the air), exploratory boat rides into the mangroves, and following the trail of fairy houses—look for the

Mystic Aquarium has formal and informal educational programs, hands-on activities, and up-close encounters with everything from sea lions and seals to penguins and whales. There are varying age and height restrictions, depending on the program, but generally speaking, children who are at least six to eight years old can participate. Children can also sign up to become guest stars during the California Sea Lion Show at the aquarium’s Foxwoods Marine Theater while teens participate in the Trainer for a Day program, interacting side-by-side with the aquarium’s professional staff and animals. Families with children ages five to twelve have the option to sign up to spend the night at the aquarium, sleeping amid the exotic exhibits. mysticaquarium.org
Land of Paug—for fun that continues well after the child’s vacation ends. “These fairy houses are made out of natural things—tree stumps, shells, things like that,” Bullinger says. “In general, they’re about a foot square, that scale, and they are hidden in the beautiful landscaping that we have around the inn. We have a map with stories about the fairies that live in each house. They’re given the map, and off they go. As they find each fairy house, they apply a stamp, and when they get them all, they can pick a prize out of our prize basket. “We have a little mailbox,” he adds. “If they put down their return address, the fairies write them back. They get a letter in the mail back home a few weeks later.” Overall, Bullinger says, kids at Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn stay happy, which keeps their parents happy, too. That’s what Sebastian’s family does while he’s building his aquariums. All three generations get to relax and enjoy the setting in their own way. “The parents can keep an eye on the kids, and know where they are,” Bullinger says, “and they know that our crew at the boat house is locked onto the kids and knows what they’re up to. And the grandparents sit on the deck and watch the younger generations having fun while they take in the beautiful view.”
Mystic Seaport Museum has a Children’s Museum within the main complex, geared toward kids seven and younger. There are hands-on activities along with story times, and the children get to wear sailors’ garb and life jackets. For kids ages eight to twelve, Mystic Seaport Museum has the Home Port Activity Center, with a drawing station, a puppet playhouse, a craft table, a story nook and more.
