HEY, CANCER. THE LESS TIME SPENT ON YOU, THE BETTER. With Memorial Sloan Kettering Physicians at Norwalk Hospital, patients can complete radiation therapy in fewer sessions. When it’s cancer, time is of the essence. So we’re making the most of it. With Memorial Sloan Kettering medical and radiation oncologists working alongside Norwalk Hospital’s cancer experts, we’re able to deliver the most advanced radiation therapies with advanced benefits, including fewer sessions than typically required for prostate, breast, and lung cancer. online at the turn of 2018 into 2019, we highlight some of the winners, share helpful tips and picks, and include great photography, including the cover image by Kyle Norton, which he took at Mitchells (anyone looking for a party dress?). Our thanks to Bill Mitchell and Andrew Mitchell-Namdar for being such good sports about getting dressed in formal suits and letting their personalities shine. Inside, because we all love home best of all, you will find exclusive winners listed in the Best of Westport—it’s just like Best of the Gold Coast, just close to home (because sometimes you don’t want to go on I-95). At the end of the issue, be sure to take the next step: Join us at the Best Of party! We’re hosting a celebration for the winners—but, really, it’s just a big party for all of us. As with the feature, we reviewed it, then renewed it. Expect more as you sample the best of food, shopping and services from your favorite local pros. We’re adding sparkle to this summer— and it’s pure gold. Best wishes,

elcome to the Summer of Gold! We’re so excited to kick off a season of great living. Whether you live here year-round or you’re just stopping by for a visit, you’re probably looking for things to do to make this the best summer yet. Our Best Of issue is filled with ideas that are nearby and approved by our readers— inside is our story that reveals and celebrates the winners of our annual readers’ poll: The Best of the Gold Coast Connecticut. If you’ve been with Westport magazine through the years, you know that we have a lot of fun with this special issue. It’s our chance to share what our readers think are the best restaurants and eateries, hot shops and spas, must-do’s for busy families and friends. This year, to celebrate fifteen years of Best Of, we threw out all the presets and relaunched the feature. We kept only what we thought was working, and added only what would make it even better for our readers. This new version is streamlined and easier to use—and it still packs a punch with great ideas for your summer day agenda. The Best Of covers some 185 categories across all of Fairfield County. Along with the results from the polling, which we ran

“It is incredibly important to carve out time for yourself every day to combat the ‘shoulds’ and ‘to do’s,’ which can often pervade our lives. Exercise provides a space where a person can decompress, unplug and connect more to his or her inner world. For me, with four young children and a career, I often feel like my mind is three steps ahead of wherever I am, and being present is a real challenge. The nature of the Forme Method centers me by forcing me to stay in the moment and focus on myself.”
“For me, coming back to the Forme Method after having my fourth baby was extremely eye opening. Many of my posture patterns had worsened, and I found that I had to retrain and relearn how to engage my core in particular. It meant staying at a very basic level in class for a long time. It meant changing the conversation in my head from critical judgment to serene acceptance. I found that the stillness of basic movement and the holding of positions was incredibly difficult and rewarding unto itself. And I found that I could be my biggest cheerleader, which I so rarely am in everyday life.”
“Just as we hold tendencies and patterns in our body—for example to lean more into one leg when standing or to roll the shoulders forward when sitting—so do we in our minds. An exercise class like The Forme Method® [barre class] emphasizes slowing down and focusing on technique and moving with purpose. Clients are encouraged to discover and understand their maladaptive posture patterns, and then correct them.…Until we take time to really explore and unpack these patterns, we are highly unlikely to change them.”
“Repetitive practice is another way to learn about your body and mind, and to make revisions, corrections and transformative changes. When we come back to something daily or weekly, it creates an opportunity for reflection and provides a space for trying something new. All forms of exercise can bring you closer to understanding yourself both physically and mentally. For example, what you couldn’t achieve before, but can now, is as important as how you coached yourself through the progression. Were you kind to yourself as you got back into shape? Made it an extra mile? Added another level of resistance? Or did you suffer through to the accomplishment?”

itness is physical, but athletes and gym-junkies know that it also promotes mental wellness and clarity. CHRISTINA M. SCHWEFEL sees the connection between body and mind clearly. A certified yoga and Pilates instructor, she founded a string of Forme Barre Fitness (formebarre.com) studios across Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts and just opened a new one on Willard Road along the Norwalk border—plus, she’s a licensed psychologist who specializes in women’s issues. She received her doctorate from Columbia University, where she teaches. Christina changed the name of her studios from the Figure Method in 2018 to focus on how classical ballet technique helps with alignment and form—the intense workout uses stretches and poses to improve posture, flexibility and strength. Below, she breaks down four ways to be your best self through fitness. by joey macari

“The Row House workout is designed to benefit members of all abilities, ages and fitness levels. It is a low-impact and high-energy workout where our members work as one team of athletes to achieve individual fitness goals,” says Kelly Takacs of the newest gym designed around rowing in Westport. Row House (therowhouse.com) offers six class specialties, including full rowing and rowing/weight combos. Rowing to the beat of the music is the foundation of the program, which promotes unity and energy. “Whether you have rowed competitively on the water or never been on a rowing machine, these classes are designed around each individual and meant to teach, motivate and encourage you to reach your personal fitness goals.”
Dante Terenzio has a lot to be proud about. Not only is his fitness center, TopSpin (topspinfitness .com), the first tennis-inspired group fitness offering, but also he is patenting the HIIT training backboards that make this workout killer. TopSpin gives you a chance to hit between 250 and 500 balls per forty-five-minute class and incorporates essential tennis strokes. “The workout is beneficial for all levels,” says Dante, who grew up in Stamford and went on to be a Division 1 player and a certified coach. “The tennis part gives beginners a chance to learn the fundamental ground strokes and have fun doing it. For intermediate to advanced players, the TopSpin backboard and tennis portion make them self-correct stroke errors in a fun repetitious format.” Bonus: The skills make you a better player on an actual tennis court.
Rhodie Lorenz, one of the founders of JoyRide (joyridestudio.com), believes in fitness off the beaten path. While many fitness studios focus solely on the physical attributes of the workout, JoyRide believes it’s one part of a bigger whole. The boutique studio offers indoor cycling, Pilates and barre and boxing classes that aim to reinvent fitness by emphasizing healthy attitudes and community. Its four studios across Fairfield County recently announced a national growth strategy, merging two Texas JoyRide operations with theirs to hopefully build more studios and spread positive vibes across the country. “We believe that fitness is a powerful tool to enable people to connect with their minds and bodies in a healthy and proactive way,” says Rhodie. “While people come from different paths, the journey we share and discover during our fifty-minute classes is toward a collective and common goal of creating positive changes within ourselves. During each class, the group energy helps everyone rise a little further than they could go alone.”
Martial arts instructor Ryan Fisher, or “Fisher,” promotes a steadfast approach to physical and mental health at HiiTKick (hiitkickfitness .com) in Wilton. “There are the obvious benefits that our clients are getting when they come regularly to our HiiT-and-kickboxing combination classes, such as overall fitness gains in strength and stamina, flexibility and plenty of stress relief,” he says. “The thing that is truly unique about what we offer, and what keeps our clients interested, is the focus on technique—and the fact that they are developing a skill in the time they are spending in our supportive community. They learn to hit and kick the bag properly, in a neverending variety of combinations that keeps their minds challenged, as well as their bodies.”

ASILIOS GIASIMAKIS and KIMBERLY MELANSON honed their hairstyling prowess all over the globe. They have worked independently for celebrities, New York Fashion Week and magazines, to name a few examples. This past fall the dynamic pair teamed up and nestled into a cozy new home on the Post Road with their salon BIRD. (birdwestport.com). The creative duo and their team utilize favorite products and techniques they’ve perfected to create an upscale experience. Here, Vasilios offers advice on dealing with stressed-out hair.
F
unky Dawgz Brass Band plays the Ridgefield Playhouse on May 23 (ridgefieldplayhouse.org), and we got the skinny from Tommy Weekes, who plays tenor saxophone, on how they came up with the clever name, and how he gives back to the community. Below is an excerpt from the interview—you can read the whole article online at westportmag.com.
NO. 2: LACK OF SHINE
NO. 3: BREAKAGE
“You should get intense-moisture treatments once every eight weeks, at the time of your haircut. They drive moisture down into the cuticle and the cortex of the hair in five minutes or less,” Vasilios says. A leave-in conditioner also helps fill “potholes” in the cuticle.
“Most women complain about their color being dull, not realizing that the more they moisturize their hair with treatments/masks/ leave-in conditioners, the better their color will stay,” says Vasilios. “Every time you wash it with piping hot water, the cuticle of the hair shaft opens wider and releases more of the color, the shine and the moisture.” The goal is to close the cuticle.
Breakage and static is usually due to the overuse of heat and tension. Using heat-protecting products can help avoid breakage with the additional benefit of keeping your color bright, advises Vasilios.
FIX: Oribe’s Brilliance and Shine leave-in conditioner, which has mother of pearl in it. “Use it on wet, towel-dried hair before blow drying or on second-day hair for a little shine.”
FIX: Use a mask, such as Beautiful Color by Oribe, once a week for fifteen minutes in the shower.
NO. 4: STATIC / FLY-AWAYS “Over drying can not only break your hair, but it can also cause static,” he says. Use a leave-in moisturizer and a heat-protecting product.
FIX: Try Oribe’s Foundation Mist. “This product can be used after towel drying your hair and before your other products or it can also be used the second day to restyle your hair.”
FIX: Try Oribe’s Gold Lust line or Royal Blowout. “Also, make sure not to overstretch your hair,” he says. “Avoid tight ponytail holders, always use a wet brush or wide-tooth comb, and always tousle-dry your hair before using a brush to style.”

You and the rest of the band are heavily involved in efforts to integrate music education into schools nationwide. Why is this an important cause to you and how would you make a difference to inner-city schools? “For me, personally, I always looked up to my teachers. I was inspired to continue playing music through high school, to study it in college and then to make it my career choice. If I can have that influence on someone, that’s something that is extremely fulfilling to me. We started our own afterschool program/summer program at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford to help with that. I teach at a nonprofit in Stamford called Project Music, which does the same thing. What’s with the name of the band? “We all met in college at UConn. The husky is the mascot, so we derived Funky Dawgz from that. And we had to spell ‘Dawgz’ the funkiest way possible.”

NEIGHBORHOOD CAFE AS COMMUNITY HUB by judith marks white

here are those random moments when one stumbles upon a spot that is destined to become a necessary indulgence. Call it serendipity. Call it karma. Whatever leads you there, one fact is certain: You have found your personal nirvana. For me, a writer who prefers to fuel up mentally and gastronomically, AUX DÉLICES satisfies all the necessary requirements. It is here I can entertain my muse as well as cultivate my two favorite sports: eating and writing. Mae West’s quip, “Too much of a good thing is wonderful,”
applies very well to any one of the five Aux Délices: two in Westport and one each in Riverside, Darien and Greenwich. For me, 44 Church Lane, Westport, is where magic happens, and where my imagination takes flight. On most days I can be found at “my table” facing a row of French doors, as I watch the world float by. For a while, the messy and mundane parts of life are put on hold. Once inside, customers bear witness to an array of open shelves and glass-enclosed cases of freshly made soups, sandwiches and salads that beckon them into a trance. The

Moms watch over their cherubs snoozing in stylish strollers, local construction workers grab coffee, and ladies who lunch hold court while nibbling on the best gingerwalnut scones in town. Customers stop by the silver urns to sample and purchase bone broth and turmeric tea, others place a catering order for an upcoming celebration. At places like this, friendships are born, business decisions are made and love affairs take flight over tea for two. In this day and age, where online chats count as communities, a neighborhood café reminds us that the pleasures of meeting and connecting face to face far surpass that of any of our virtual habits. The secret to community is showing up— luckily, it can also be a treat. sweets are so decadent, even the staunchest dieter is seduced and loses his or her composure before succumbing to a flourless chocolate cake oozing fresh cream or a cookie as large as the china plate on which it is served. One and all have been lost to the sweet charms. “Aux Délices is our very own Parisian café,” says Alina Rodescu-Pitchon, a regular. “It’s a place to meet friends over a salade niçoise, an iced green tea and sparkling conversation without having to leave the comfort of town.” Being a regular myself, I can relate. It is where my pen is poised and articles are written. I completed an entire novel between bites. A friend humorously suggested I place a sign on my table that reads: “By Appointment Only.” The staff is as diverse as the patrons and the menu. Jordan Rivera, the manager at 44 Church Lane, is gracious and always accommodating as he oversees it all with a personal and professional touch. His staff, including Laura Mendoza, Maru Aquilara and Alejandro Rangel, never miss a beat as they add a sense of contagious camaraderie to the experience. Alejandro has worked at all five Aux Délices emporiums for eleven years. “Going to work each day feels like coming home,” he says, “and a sense of family prevails.” Jordan adds, “It’s the customers who make it all worthwhile. The food is fabulous, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee intoxicating, but the best part is the ongoing conversations where so many relevant connections happen.” On a chilly day the freshly made bowls of spicy turkey chili

oming from a close-knit family, it is only fitting that Jordan Michelle Macari’s future husband, Daniel Stephen Stefkovich, was a friend of her brother David. After five years of date nights at Café Silvium (their favorite Italian restaurant in Stamford); summer getaways to Newport and Cape Cod with their respective families; and other shared memories, the groom, also known as DJ, popped the question. DJ and Jordan were married at Holy Spirit Church in Stamford; a reception followed at the Shorehaven Golf Club in Norwalk. The celebration featured musical entertainment by the father of the bride’s former bandmate, Pete Klein, and as a special touch, cones filled with French fries were served as an appetizer, a nod to the bride’s favorite snack. The bride is the daughter of Michael and Sally Macari of Stamford. She received a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Connecticut and is an administrative coordinator for Alinda Capital Partners LLC in Greenwich. The groom is the son of Daniel and Patti Stefkovich of Westport. He received a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Rhode Island and is a cost leader for GE Capital. On a trip to the Cranberry Festival in Nantucket in October of 2017, Will surprised his wife-to-be by popping the question on Madaket Beach, just a stone’s throw away from her family’s summer house. s far as your typical rom-coms go, Laura and Frank’s “meet cute” was not one you’d typically see in your McConaughey/Hudson flick. After moving to Connecticut to open her Pure Barre Studio, a mutual friend put her in contact with Frank, who was an electrician. The two were browsing the mall when Laura noticed beautiful black-track-lighting in a clothing store that she thought would go great in the studio. Apparently, so did Frank, who was also staring at the lighting. The two locked eyes, shared a laugh and their fitness-mogul-meets-electrician romance was formed. They were married at St. Catherine of Siena in Riverside, and the reception was held at the Belle Haven Club in Greenwich. After a minor hiccup (the groom found out he had a shellfish allergy during the cocktail hour), the two danced a beautifully choreographed routine and celebrated with family and friends. Laura is the daughter of Michael and Audrey Laboissonniere of Coventry, Rhode Island. She received her bachelor’s degree in advertising/public relations from the University of Tampa, then received her M.E.D. from the University of South Florida, majoring in student affairs. BETTER SAFE… LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE
EFFECTS RATE • How long you pay for your own care before LTC payments kick in • Whether or not you include inflation protection • Total benefit amount over time • Maximum daily benefit • Number of years you can get benefits
Greens in Wilton. The numbers added up. In Connecticut, a bedroom in an assisted-living facility costs $4,700 a month, while a private room in a nursing home totals $13,733 monthly, according to Genworth. This is nearly 60 percent higher than the national median, as we are the second-most expensive state for a private nursing home stay, after Alaska. The totals are higher still in Fairfield County. Our average stay in a nursing home lasts two-and-a-half years, according to the Connecticut Office of Policy and Management. (Do the math, but try not to give yourself a heart attack: An average stay costs $483,625, times two for a couple.) “The advisers don’t talk about it,” Gaugler says, “but the biggest risk to their assets under management is long-term care. A health situation can destroy the financial security of a spouse and any loved ones.” Who needs care? Chances are, you will. Shockingly, 43 percent of people in long-term care in Connecticut are younger than 65, according to OPM statistics. And nearly 70 percent of state residents will need long-term care after they’re 65. “We’re not talking about people moribund, lying in bed,” Gaugler says. Long-term care insurance kicks in when a person needs help with at least two of six daily activities, including eating, using the bathroom, bathing, incontinence issues, dressing, and “transferring,” or getting up and out of bed or a chair, due to a chronic illness or disability. No, regular health insurance and Medicare don’t cover these things, as their purpose is to help a person get better, not for custodial care. Not everyone will need care—and this is where things get tricky. If you are 50 and pay, say, $3,000 a year for insurance for the next thirty years and never use it, that’s money down the drain. Yet Gaugler thinks it’s worth the expense. “If my father could have played golf up to the day he died, I would have happily flushed every penny down the toilet.” W westportmag.com

SELFINSURE?
S
ome experts say that once your assets reach about $2.5 million, you can forgo traditional long-term care insurance and pay for your own care. If that’s your situation, do a cost-benefit analysis.
1
Estimate how much care will cost you. Start with today’s averages, then add a percentage or three each year for inflation.
2
Make a plan. How much disposable income will you have? Will a pension or Social Security figure into the equation? How will you pay your other costs of living? Target which assets will pay for your healthcare, and don’t spend them until you need them.
3
Talk with your tax advisor. Learn if you can use traditional IRAs and deductions to pay for medical expenses and services. Can you set aside money for care in a health savings account?
4
Share your plan. Review your decisions with your loved ones.

You buy insurance to protect your home, your car, your health— happy you don’t have to use it. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were insurance protection for your retirement Laurie Sapper Gaugler plan? There is, says Laurie Sapper Gaugler: Long-term care insurance. “It’s an insurance policy for your 401(k),” she says. An independent long-term care insurance specialist in Fairfield, she knows of scenarios like this one: A couple with $1 million in assets suddenly needed a homehealth aide for the ailing spouse and had to dig into their retirement savings to pay the aide. In Fairfield County that costs about $1,077 for forty-four hours a week, according to the 2018 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. “The couple had to write a check for that from their portfolio,” Gaugler says. “Can you go to your financial advisor and say I need another $56,000 a year?” They needed even more to cover income taxes on their withdrawal. She wrestled with a similar quandary when her grandmother needed care. Gaugler’s father took out a second mortgage to pay for his mother’s nursing-home stay, nearly wiping out the family’s assets. When he and his wife needed care, their long-term care insurance payments kicked in, paying 100 percent of their room, board and care costs at The

amilies walked hand in hand across Sherwood Island State Park in Westport for the First Annual Smart Walk. The event, sponsored by Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities, saw more than 200 parents, children and supporters of youth with learning disabilities and ADHD across Fairfield County. It was founded by Westport resident Jane Ross in 2000. Smart Walk featured games, face painting, stress ball arts and crafts, photo booth and recreational activities, as well as an opening-ceremonies speech by Robert Tudisco, an author, attorney at Barger & Gaines and motivational speaker on his adult ADHD diagnosis. First Selectman Jim Marpe and Second Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker attended, as did the Weston High School Chorale, which led the crowd in a rendition of “This Is Me,” from the film The Greatest Showman by Westport composer Justin Paul. Nearly $50,000 was raised in support of the organization. westportmag.com

We Have Hope
H
omes with Hope, a Westport-based organization dedicated to eradicating homelessness in Fairfield County, held its eleventh annual Stand Up event at the Quick Center for the Arts. Comedian Nate Bargatze, whose sketches have appeared on Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Netflix’s The Standups, brought the laughs to a packed crowd. A cocktail reception was held under a large tent with light bites for guests, who also heard stories of triumph from Homes with Hope clients. This year’s fundraiser brought in 15 percent of the annual budget for programs like food pantries, after-school programs and housing-development initiatives for struggling families, clients with mental illness, and individuals battling chronic homelessness. »

GOLDEN ADVICE
Peter Chang, winner of best Chinese cuisine, picks Szechuan dishes to sample now.
1
THE REAL DEAL For authentic fare, start with spicy lamb buns or the milder Furong chicken hot pot. Follow with shredded pork with bean curd and bamboo shoots, a traditional milder dish.
2
FIRST TIME? NO PROBLEM Try the Bamboo Style Fish, lightly breaded flounder seasoned with cumin and Szechuan spices. Vegetarians should try the Mapo Tofu, a traditional spicy dish that pairs well with rice.

avern food gets a boastful upgrade at Brick Walk Tavern. This new restaurant offers all of the necessary hospitality of a classic tavern and serves as a hub of the community (it’s a prime spot for meet-ups, family dinners, first dates and business meetings), but its food is beyond standard tavern fare. Consider the Maine lobster, shrimp and bay scallops with English peas, potatoes, leeks and tomatoes in a puff-pastry shell. MAY/JUNE 2019 WESTPORT

ime is always on your side when you step inside Manfredi. So, who better to ask about the latest watch trends than longtime manager Robert Weintraub? “For ladies’ watches, Hermès is one of the most in demand. Many would be surprised that Hermès has a rich history of watchmaking dating back over eighty years. Their timeless classic designs can go from the office to an evening out. The Cape Cod is one of their iconic watches and has many variations and strap options,â€? says Weintraub. And for the guys? “In the under $5,000 range, the new Seamaster 300m, which was updated about a year ago, is the perfect all-around steel sport watch. It comes in three different dial colors on a bracelet or rubber strap.â€? For those who want to make an even bigger statement, Weintraub recommends the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Automatic. “It has become one of the most sought after men’s watches, especially the blue dial version. It comes with a bracelet, rubber strap and alligator strap as well as an interchangeable folding buckle, and it features a unique quick-release mechanism that allows you to change between them without the use of tools.â€?

CAPTAIN JOHN’S TIKI TOURS
TANGLED VINE
GLENGATE
Ahoy! Grab up to five of your closest friends, BYOB and take a scenic ride along Harbor Point on a Polynesian-style floating lounge. Why take life so seriously when there’s so much fun to be had? We suggest booking on Tiki Tuesdays, when a thirty-minute tour is only $25 per person, with a complimentary lei and cooler and ice for your favorite drinks. Whenever you go this summer, you can trust Capt. John to show you the best local sights as your favorite tunes play and you let stress float away. captjohnstikitours.com
Summer was made for good friends, good times and good music. Get it all when you head out to see Tangled Vine. The band rocks Hawaii, Miami, San Francisco, Aruba, Boston, NYC and, lucky us, Fairfield County. They even find time to give back. They’ll be at The Pilot House Family Fun Day Fundraiser on May 4. They have also played for Make-A-Wish, Kids in Crisis, MasterCard, Bridgewater, Pfizer, PGA World Championship, Graham Capital Management and others. Do good or just a good time, let’s dance. tangledvine.com
Some of the best summer memories are made at home, gathered with friends and family for a pool party or dinner under the stars. If it’s time for a new or an upgraded pool, garden, outdoor kitchen or other essential, Glengate is on it. This outdoor-lifestyle company understands family time: Four generations have grown the business from a pool company into a firm for pool design and construction, landscape architecture, garden design and maintenance, and all-thingsoutdoors–so you have fun. glengatecompany.com

TOASTING THE TOWN’S BEST Sure, it’s great to know who won Best of the Gold Coast, but let’s take a moment to focus on what Westporters really care about: Best of Westport. Here’s a list of our readers’ favorite places close to home. Maybe you already have your favorite place for bagels and for sushi, but you’re open to hearing about where to get summer shoes or a flirty blowout. Just look inside—our readers share all. If you disagree with any of the wins (“What do you mean such-and-such didn’t win?”), keep in mind that these results are from a readers’ poll we took around the new year. The editorial team had to stand aside and let you, our readers, have the say about the best in town. Enjoy the read, and let’s celebrate local talent.
