Let us refresh your memory. The Embers burst onto the Launceston scene in 2005, fast becoming one of Tasmania’s most sought after live bands attracting diverse crowds at both festivals and venues alike. Their infectious original sound, incorporating elements of blues, folk, reggae, roots, and rock saw them take out the National Campus Band Competition in 2006, two Tasmanian Music Industry awards in 2008 and named as a Next Crop Artist by Triple J. During this time they produce a self titled Ep in 2007 which remains a treasured item in many local music collections. The success of the Embers’ original music also saw them support some great international and national acts such as: The Violent Femmes, Faker, True Live, The Whitlams, Lior, Bomba, The Red Eyes & The Custom Kings as well as playing multiple Falls Festival and MS Fests.

The Falls Festival ’08 saw the end of an era for The Embers, after drummer Joel Delphin chose to leave the band to pursue other creative avenues. The majority of the founding band members disbanded across the country and internationally, all walking their own individual paths and pursuing “real jobs and careers”.

Can anyone remember the Embers??

However, main song writer, Mick Attard’s (lead singer and acoustic guitar) constant writing ethic did not wane, seeing him continue solo gigging and song writing. Exploring their ongoing musical connection, founding Ember members, Mick Attard and Katy Humphries (electric violin and saxophone) collaborated with local musicians on a number of projects which has kept them busy and active in the local music scene.

Nevertheless, a slow simmering in the hearts, souls and minds of original members Michael Attard and Katy Humphries saw the eventual flickering flame of the Embers in a small backyard shed in 2011. With the blessing of all original members a new era of The Embers was conceived through countless jams and a number of contributors along the way including talented musicians: Norman Abdullah, Michael Woods, Carl Bulow & Luke Young.

The current line-up consisting of Mick Attard on lead vocals, harmonica and acoustic and electric guitars, Katy Humphries on electric violin and saxophone, and new members: Miles Bender on keys, Kilty Salter on bass & Jai Larkman on drums and percussion. Also joining the line-up is Merujan Sendoner, a tireless supporter of Launcestons’ original music scene, as The Embers’ permanent live sound extroadinaire.

With Mick continuing as the main writer of material, in combination with creative input from all members of the band, the sound of the current embers line-up still incorporates the genre crossing, groove based, hard to put a finger on sound that had come to be expected of the embers. Inevitably changes have occurred, particularly in terms of instrumentation and creative input with the end product a sum of the parts in which 2012 will see new songs embracing the essence of The Embers’ multi instrumental melting-pot of sound, with a solid groove, roots, blues and funk base.

To catch the return of The Embers with all new material and perhaps an old song or two, head down to The Royal Oak on Thursday the 5th of April. And don’t forget your dancing shoes!!!!

emmy bryce and kate vigo: joined at the hip?

Two of indie pop’s newest darlings, EMMY BRYCE and KATE VIGO, are proud to announce their upcoming co-headline tour.

The girls met in late 2011 and immediately connected over their mutual passion for music. After spending some time together, the pair decided to team up and create a new live music experience for their fans.

Moving from town to town, making new best friends every day and bonding with everything around you – life on the road is a truly magical experience for any artist.

Inspired by this, Emmy and Kate wanted to come up with a way to forge closer relationships with their fans and let them in on the fun of touring.

The result: THE HUNTER AND GATHERER TOUR. Throughout the April trek, Emmy and Kate will be engaging with their fans through social media, sharing ideas, images and stories of their travels. In turn, fans will be invited to connect directly with these unique artists and contribute to the whole touring experience.

“Emmy came up with the idea of us working together and I really liked her music. We met up a few times and I realized she was a top chick. We played together at the Evelyn and decided that it would be a great idea to do a tour together and join forces. I really liked the brightness and optimism of her sound. I thought it would be great fun and that our shows would complement each other well. We are both Melbourne artists who have a style that can be labelled as alternative/pop but within that category we are each incredibly different. We are both coming from opposite ends of the spectrum. Emmy comes from a pop back ground, which is produced and structured and I come from a jazz background which is deconstructed and improvised.” – Kate Vigo “I approached Kate to join forces and tour because I loved the sound of her music (and her stunning voice) and could see she was kicking real goals with her career – she was serious. Melbourne-based songstress Emmy Bryce is certainly creating waves with her uplifting polaroid pop songs that hint at the ghosts of her childhood. With its minimal percussion opening out to a bedroom-dancing chorus, Emmy’s debut single EVERY STAR IS A SETTING SUN FOR SOMEONE has already earmarked Emmy as a young songwriter of tomorrow. Emmy’s debut EP SEVEN DAYS was released on March 9.

Following on from the release of Kate’s previous single WANNA RUN, the soulful pop songstress has been adding the final touches to her highly anticipated new album BLUE TO GOLD. ‘Wanna Run’ has been a favourite across local music sites, gaining plays across many community radio programs and national radio station triple j. Kate will be performing tons of new material when she hits the road this April to release her brand new single, the ‘60s inspired tune NOT THE ONE. dali & the paper band show us what they’re made of ...

Southern Tasmanians, Dali & The Paper Band, are touring to promote their recently produced self-titled debut EP, so we caught up with Dali and asked him how this all came about.

What are your earliest memories of music?

I remember playing recorder and guitar in grade 3 when I was going to steiner school in Byron Bay. How did you become a musician?

Mum said I was born moving my fingers as if I was playing the piano. But I loved music since I heard and started playing it. Music grew on me as the years went by. After writing my first song and performing it, I realized this is what I want to do.

Tell me about the formation of the band?

After returning from Switzerland, I wanted to start fresh. So I asked Julius, who used to be the guitarist, to play bass. Julius and I decided Alf would be best for the band. So I called him up and Bobs your uncle.

I first met you, busking, do you still do that? What did busking teach you?

I would like to do some more busking one day, but I haven’t got around to it since. I think busking was great for building confidence in performing.

Regarding this debut release for the band, have you done most of the writing, or has it been a collaborative effort?

I wrote all the songs. Then rehearsed them with the band who came up with bass lines and drum rythms.

Other than your fellow band members, who else has had a major influence on this release?

My family and friends were a big support in the whole process, especially Ramon who did the artwork and Rob who recorded and mixed the CD. Were there times when things didn’t go to plan, and how did you overcome the challenges, if so?

The main difficulty was that the mixing and artwork were done in Switzerland while I was here, so it was a slower process because I couldn’t just sit in the studio and give my opinoin right away. It was a back and forth emailing session, sending songs and artwork until it was perfect.

To someone who hasn’t heard your music before, and is learning about your band for the first time, through this article, how would you describe the music that you make?

It’s a mixture of funk, folk, reggae, hip hop, groove and pop. Sounds a bit like the Police, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer and the Whitest Boy Alive. We also do alot of improvised jamming that can get very interesting! HA!!

‘Dali’ is an unusual name, did your parents name you after Salavador Dali, or from where does the name originate?

It would make sense if I was named after him, but my name is actually from Croatia. My father’s side of the family is Croatian.

You must feel very proud of this release, of what you have achieved, what are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I would really like to have a manager and a booking agent behind the band to help us play even more shows and festivals.

There’s a bit of a buzz about this band at the moment. You can see why at The Granbd Poobah, in Hobart, on Friday, 6th of April, on the 14th of April at the Nyari Niara Good Spirit Festival on Bruny Island, or at The Adventure Bay hall, also on bruny Island on the 27th of April. After being officially Unearthed by triple j just over a year ago, Ball Park Music have become one of Australia’s must see musical outfits. With wide spread airplay the catalyst for a touring regime that doesn’t seem to let up, Ball Park Music are the band that the masses are talking about.

Touring the country aside, BPM’s achievements in 2011 are nothing less than extraordinary. The Brisbane sextet unleashed their debut LP Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs in September entering the ARIA chart at #36. This record plays home to six high rotating radio singles – ‘iFly’, ‘Sad Rude Future Dude’, ‘Rich People Are Stupid’, ‘It’s Nice To Be Alive’, ‘All I Want is You’ and ‘Literally Baby’.

The video for ‘It’s Nice to Be Alive’ was voted Channel [V]’s Ripe Clip of the Week, beating Kanye West and Jay Z as well as The Kooks and also took out the #3 spot in Rage’s Top 50 of 2011. ‘Rich People Are Stupid’ also appeared at #13 in the Rage countdown.

Ball Park Music can add another accolade to the ever-growing list, with two entries in Australia’s most widely renowned musical democracy – triple j’s Hottest 100. ‘It’s Nice to Be Alive’ and ‘All I Want is You’ appeared at #31 and #38 respectively. Their record Happiness… received nominations for Album of the Year in both triple j’s J Awards and the Rolling Stone Awards. It was also voted the 10th Best Album of 2011 in triple j’s listener poll. And as a band, Ball Park Music were nominated for Artist to Watch in the Rolling Stone Awards and took out the J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year.

With the nation’s home of music, Triple J singing their praises, Ball Park Music has had a great referee for any nonbelievers. But it’s hard to imagine that there could be any with their ability to make lovely music and the fact that their debut album has a bum on the cover.

Ball Park Music have had a bumper year, firstly signing to Stop Start Music and then releasing their stellar first album ‘Happiness and Surrounding Suburbs’ they had a lot of touring and supporting in between. Along came not one but two songs in the Triple J Hottest 100 and now with a national tour of their own, there is nowhere else but up for this band to go.

The debut album which continues to bring them success has such a happy go lucky vibe which could be said resonates throughout the band. Each track although unique is catchy with the four members of the six piece contributing to back vocals and they even have a trombone!

But for all the success Ball Park Music seem to have their feet on the ground, front man Sam Cromack says of finding out about their two Hottest 100 songs “…That was great but you just nod your head and keep on keeping on.” Cromack is humble to say the least and maybe even a little socially awkward but his on stage presence is definitely on the contrary to his pre stage routine.

“I used to be fine, but the last 6 months I’ve been getting a bit of anxiety before going on stage. I’ve thrown up so many meals before going on stage, I guess when we start to headline shows I feel the pressure a bit more and I feel as if I really need to deliver. I keep throwing up a lot which is embarrassing but it doesn’t get in the way of the show.”

There is no reason to fear though as support for Ball Park Music continues to grow, selling out shows throughout Australia for their 180 degree tour (Talking the piss out of U2 and Jay-Z’s 360 degree tour.) and upward of 13000 fans on Facebook, there is more than just hype surrounding this band.

We caught up with frontman Sam Cromack on his way to Sydney for another stellar performance we are sure, so here’s a snippet from what he had to say.

Sauce - Do you guys have a preshow routine or a tradition?

Sam Cromack - We all put our hands in together and count to 3 and then yell “group sex”.

S - Hahaha cool. So you’re coming down to Tassie in the very near future, how do you feel about that?

Sam - We’ve been lucky to come to Tassie a bunch of times in the last 6 months. We got to come at the end of last year with Boy and Bear, we’ve gone back to do some shows at uTas in Launnie and Hobart but these shows will be our first headlines down there. We’re excited to come back.

Tassie is detached from the touring circuit for a lot of bands and it takes a lot of hard work to make the Tassie gigs happen. We’re excited especially for Hobart, the ticket sales are coming along really well and it’s good for us to know that a place like Hobart is a secure place to tour.

S - What happens after a show?

Sam - We usually take our clothes off and bathe in our own sweat for about ten fifteen minutes and then we just pack up and get ready and go to the hotel. Most people have left the venue so you can get back into normal person mode and whack a shirt on and pack up the gig.

S - Do you find yourself lured into having a few drinks?

Sam - We definitely enjoy drinking alcohol, the extent we do that is dependent on how much we travel. Like this week we have 5 shows back to back and many of the gigs are instead of going to a hotel we jump back in the van and drive to the next city we’re playing in and stay there. Stuff like that isn’t good for getting mega pissed. Nights when we’re in the same city and we have the day off is where we can let loose and have a good time.

And we hear that Ball Park Music might have a few spare days when they visit next, so head along to Hotel New York in Launnie on the 20th of April or The Waratah Hotel on the 21st to see these guys play and maybe have a few bevvies with them afterwards! www.sauce.net.au

there’s no style like the freestylers!

Aston Harvey and Matt Cantor were both making different styles of music when they first met in London in the mid-90s.

Uber-engineer Aston had been half of pioneering breakbeat hardcore act Blapps Posse, getting busy with cuts like ‘Buss’ It’ and ‘Don’t Hold Back’ before going on to work with Definition Of Sound, Rebel MC and DJ Rap. Matt Cantor, meanwhile, was recording with Andy Gardner from the Plump DJs as Cut ‘N’ Paste and Strike for the fledgling Freskanova label.

Discovering a mutual love of hip-hop and electro, Matt and Aston started making tracks together.

The first record they sampled was old skool electro classic ‘Don’t Stop The Rock’ by Freestyle Express, and the resulting track ‘Drop The Boom’ on Scratch City Records launched them as The Freestylers and the partnership has been non-stop ever since.

With a career spanning over two decades, The Freestylers have pushed musical boundaries, headlined sell-out shows, won endless awards, relentlessly toured festivals and clubs, had international chart success on several occasions, sold over half a million records, have been inspiration to hundreds of acts around the world and were the very first electronic act to play fully live on legendary BBC TV show Top Of The Pops.

There is just no stopping the Stylers as more records, more shows and more groundbreaking production is all still to come from this revolutionary act.

From busking on Australia’s street corners to selling out venues across the country in only 18 months, Mike Rosenberg, aka Passenger, is a modern day troubadour who’s constant touring in both hemispheres has seen him win over scores of fans with his unique lyricism and ability to move from the heartbreaking to hilarious in a single phrase.

In celebration of his new album ‘All The Little Lights’ Passenger will set out on his largest Australian tour to date, accompanied by a full band to recreate the sounds and size of the record.

good vibrations on shaky ground

by Loretta D’Urso The Good Vibrations Festival, since its origin in 2004 by promoter Justin Hemmes and Jam Music, has hosted an amazing variety of artists and in turn has received national recognition.

Unfortunately, it seems that the future of the festival is resting on rocky ground.

According to a statement from the Good Vibrations Twitter page, the festival will not be occurring this December, as promised last year), or next February (as scheduled) and may take place at another time: “OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Good Vibrations rested for 2012. We will be in touch in due course regarding plans for 2013.”

Promoter Justin Hemmes also noted that the competitive demand for artists and unpredictable weather were other factors contributing to the shaky outlook of the festival. “We will not be going ahead with the Festival this year. We will be in touch in due course regarding plans for 2013,” he said.

Snoop Dogg, The Killers, James Brown and Kanye West are just a few of the many acts that have graced the stages and kept crowds on their feet across the four Australian states where the Good Vibes Festival takes place. www.sauce.net.au

It’s a long way from the bottom!

With his third studio album set to drop within the next few days, Obie Trice should be kicking back and enjoying the high life but not for this linguist as he is now not only a worldwide rap artist but also a businessman.

The third album, ‘Bottoms Up’ has the same alcoholic referenced title as his second and third releases, but this time Trice is set to drop these beats under his own name well and truly.

With his own imprint now up and running, Black Market Entertainment, Trice has had the leisure of not being a slave to the barking orders of a label but the pressure of sacrificing his own dollar bills for the project.

As the album leaked two weeks release date and from the track listing, Trice has accrued some great artists to work with him either behind the desk or on the microphone.

With production input from Dr. Dre, Eminen, Statik Selektah and NoSpeakerz, the album is off to a good start. With three tracks now released from the record over the last eight months and a few release date changes, According to The Source magazine, Obie Trice delayed “Bottoms Up” until April 3rd, citing that he wants to be able to release the album simultaneously worldwide so that all fans are able to experience it at the same time.

But Trice’s baby, Black Market Entertainment, is only just learning how to walk as ‘Bottoms Up’ is its first release and this is also Trice’s first venture into the open without Shady Records.

Controversy had surrounded his departure from the label as he fought off rumors that there had been fallings out with Eminem and Dr. Dre, but with the upcoming release it is easy to see that the statements are unfounded as both Eminem and Dre worked on ‘Bottoms Up’ as producers and Eminem worked on the track ‘Richard’ with Trice.

The 34 year old Trice may seem like he is living the high life now but it hasn’t all been business ventures and track listings, it was once drugs and crime that occupied his days.

Growing up in the worst part of Detroit, Trice speaks of music and his mother that was inspiration for him to not fall into the traps Detroit had set. “…I was definitely involved in dealing drugs and crime and things like that. I wasn’t immune to that, but at the same time I love creating music.

My mother was a real big inspiration and gave me ambition to be the best that I could be and do anything that I love.

So it was those things that forced me to chase my dreams.”

But it isn’t only music that now inspires Trice, he is an advocate for change within Detroit and helping young people to find something better than the hood.

When I wasn’t in a drug house or running from the police or getting in shootouts when I was younger.

With talks mid last year to a Michigan State senator about funding and help to create more entertainment revenue and outlets for young rappers to work in.

Taking to the streets that could have taken me to prison or had me an early grave, I would take my hustle money and go to the studio and create music.

Obie Trice’s message runs much deeper than an ordinary rap artist, with his feet planted on the ground it isn’t hard to see that this man still has a way to go.

Plus I had a little girl, who is thirteen now.

Her name is kobie.

yacht club DjS: BRING ZOMBIE-LOVE PARTY

We made it through the apocalyptic start to 2012 with no zombie sightings, but Australia’s own mash-up maestros Yacht Club DJs are about to make sure 2012 gets a dose of ’50s horror throughout March and April when they hit the road on the “They Mostly Come At Night…Mostly” tour.

The Yacht Club DJs take on the mashup genre and their explosive concoction of classic pop, metal, theme songs and anything in-between is a testament to their knowledge of back catalogues as well as Guy’s constant desire to forage the Internet for hidden gems to get the crowd moving.

Frightening both capital cities and regional towns, including Toowoomba, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Geelong, Ballarat, Hobart, Wollongong, Canberra and Newcastle, Yacht Club DJs take to the stage with their take on a B Grade Horror flick – Zombies, fake bl ood, plus lots of dancing and, as always, NUDITY!.

Making it a night to dismember the Yacht Club DJs will show the crowd how debauchery and disruption is done.

Their first national tour since 2010, Australia best be wary of what they’ve got in store.

Ballarat’s Guy Chappell-Lawrence and Gareth (Gaz) Harrison better known as the Yacht Club DJs will take their on-stage antics to the next level preparing to let night terrors loose on Australia.

Guy and Gaz - good friends from mingling at the local - found their common ground in their eclectic and diverse taste of music including pop, hardcore and hip-hop plus a little bit of Australian larrikin.

Bonding over how they spent their childhood compiling long lists of songs that would get the party started, they began DJing to their friends as residents of Karova Lounge in Ballarat. But it didn’t stop there.

The plays depict and interpret Port Arthur’s history in an engaging and entertaining way, and are ideal for the whole family. They will each be performed twice daily from Good Friday, April 6 until Friday April 13, 2012.

The Man Who Threw a Stone by Richard Davey, is based on the story of Port Arthur convict Dennis Collins who, as an old man, found that a hunger strike was the only form of protest available to him. As his life ebbs away, the play follows the desperate attempts of Charlotte Lempriere to save him. Performed in the Separate Prison 11.45am & 2.45pm. The Shingle Strike by David Young tells the story of Irish poet Francis Macnamara’s endeavour to overcome the bullying tactics of an unscrupulous overseer. The convicts’ only hope of resistance and justice is to strike, but can Macnamara persuade his gang to join him?

Performed behind the Penitentiary at 12.30pm and 4.15pm (weather permitting). A Boy’s Life by Les Winspear, tells the story of a London urchin who is sent across the world to Point Puer, where he is offered an opportunity for a new life. However he finds that this new life comes at a price he is not prepared to pay, so he chooses instead to continue his life of crime. Performed behind the Penitentiary 1.15pm and 3.30pm (weather permitting). The plays, which run approximately 20 minutes each, are produced by Alan Andrews, directed by Chris Hamley and performed by Alan and Chris with Bryony Geeves and Rowan Harris.

Visitors can have a go at moulding their own convict brick, make a peg doll, print their own wallpaper or find out just what a fantascope is, in a program of fun family activities. being presented daily over Easter at the Port Arthur Education Centre in the Accountants House from April 3-15.

An exhibition of paintings by local artists will be on display in the Museum Café from April 5-11, presented by The Peninsula Art Group. The plays and activities are included in the cost of admission to the Site. A family pass is great value and covers two adults and up to six children.

Creating a dialogue between works across different cultures, artistic styles and times has been at the heart of Jean-Hubert Martin’s curatorial passions. His latest exhibition, Theatre of the World, will open at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart on 23 June, providing another visual challenge and sense of provocation for visitors tothe museum.Theatre of the World will be one of Australia’s largest collaborations between a private and public museum, with 180 works from David Walsh’s private collection at MONA and around 300 works from the Tasmanian Museum and ArtGallery’s collections. The works will be displayed across 17 of MONA’s galleries alongside special commissions and selected loans from other important Australian and international collections. The works will form, in today’s vernacular, a visual search-engine-result spectacular – in real time and space.Jean-Hubert Martin argues that our staccato lives, our electrostatic-burdened senses and the complexity of our world means we are now merely “grasping at scraps of knowledge” or abdicating responsibility for our lives to the experts. So, he hopes to help us restore our ability to see again the passion, the fear, the mystery, the darkness and the beauty of our collective preoccupations and learnings across time. He does this by creating visual linkages and relations between disparate shapes, designs and objects spanning cultures, time and intent. He hopes to take visitors on an experiential voyage that moves them from the visceral to the symbolic, and the factual to the poetic.

In Theatre of the World visitors enter a series of galleries or environments containing a prodigal and discontinuous array of objects reflecting some 4,000 years of human creativity. Works such as: stuffed and mounted birds; parts of animal skeletons; Chinese ceramics; water colour portraits from Georgian England; First World War “trench art”; Egyptian stone carvings, mummy cases and funerary objects; African beadwork and woodwork; Aboriginal bark painting and artefacts; natural history illustration; Melanesian shields, masks and drums; corals and shells; curiosities; contemporary art works, photographs and videos; geological specimens; scientific instruments; and teapots, along with more than 80 barkcloths from across the South Pacific.

The importance of universal knowledge was a preoccupation of Renaissance intellects, including the renownedItalian philosopher, Giulio Camillo (1480 – 1544). During the 1530s, Camillo began to construct for the FrenchKing François I (1494 – 1547) a memory theatre now known to us only through a text he is said to have dictated towards the end of his life. The ideas were kept secret because, in the king’s eyes, Camillo’s theatre was aninstrument of power. It took the form of a small wooden amphitheatre, sitting opposite the king’s throne, and contained a galaxy of texts and objects representing the history of knowledge at that time; juxtaposed to trigger, systematically, if the viewer had enough knowledge and understanding, the wonders of god and man.

Almost five hundred years later, Jean-Hubert Martin with Tijs Visser, Olivier Varenne, Nicole Durling and the MONA and TMAG teams have created a 21st century version. Jean Hubert Martin said: “Theatre of the World will attempt to revive visual thinking – a practical philosophy taking material form in objects. Life today is about visual images. We take so much of our learning and communication from television and the Internet but we are not learning how to analyse images. We have lost confidence in our own ability to understand and have handed responsibility to the experts, with Theatre of the World we hope to encourage visual thinking as a counterpoint to the abstraction of language”.

Jean-Hubert Martin and his co-curator/exhibition designer, Tijs Visser, have worked together on a number of exhibitions including the Visserinspired, Artempo, in the Palace Fortuny for the 2007 Venice Biennale and the Moscow Biennale (2009). Artempo looked at how humans have engaged with and interpreted the passage of time across cultures, history and art forms, and it inspired David Walsh to team up with Martin for MONA.

Unless you’re a fan, you would not recognise this hard-rock band who released a solid debut album back in 2005 titled Twelve Year Silence. Band-member changes, existing band members playing/ touring with other bands, an acoustic sessions album in 2006 and an uncertainty as to when the bands follow up album would be released, has finally come to revelation!

E V E R Y T H I N G CHANGES – JULIAN LENNON The son of John Lennon and the most commercially successful child of a famous man in the history of mankind, it’s no wonder he became addicted to heroin and lost his fortune after topping the charts with his debut album (what choice do you have when your step mum is Yoko Ono, right?).

In an age where pop divas are a dime a dozen and lucky to get a shot at a second single, let alone a second album, Madonna has stood the test of time.

She is a cultural icon to rival Marilyn Monroe and has come a long way for someone that can’t really act, dance or sing.

Seven years on we have New Tradition full of melodic hard-rock numbers continuing in the same vein as the first album. To a degree you could say the band is a supergroup formed from other well established band’s including Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Troy McLawhorn of DoubleDrive, Will Hunt of Evanescence, Corey Lowery of Streomud and Brett Hesla of Virgos Merlot.

Anyway I digress because frankly no one sounds more like John Lennon than Julian Lennon, their vocal styles are spookily similar. Julian is John without the anger and the politics. ‘Everything Changes’ is a mature collection of songs from a talented writer, who sadly is little inclined to play it very safe, on ‘Hold On’ he sounds like a middle of the road Elton John (as he sounds now, now as he sounded when he made decent music) and the song promises to deliver, but never quiet takes off.

Kisses On The Bottom – Paul McCartney Sure Rod Stewart, Michael Buble and Robbie Williams have made similar records in recent years, but what sets this one apart, is it really shows that the roots of the best Beatles songs, are from The Great American Songbook, not simply re-workings of Elvis Presley, Little Richard or Gene Vincent. McCartney has delivered an album of standards, perfectly replicating the songs of his childhood. Covering the great writers, from Irving Berlin, Iva Gershwin through to Hoagy Carmichael, not to mention throwing in a few of his original compositions for good measure.

First single taken off the release, album title New Tradition is a rollicking aggressive tune being one of the standouts full of strong guitar riffs, smashing drums, groove orientated bass lines - the typical things you want to hear in a rock song. Tracks Fist from the sky, Burn Your Eyes, Take It From Me are packed with more meaty crunching sound then a slaughter-house .

Being a fan of the other band-members projects and an instant fan of the band soon as I heard the guitar riff from their first ever single Brother, one of the greatest modern rock riffs I might add, I was hooked. Dark New Day is a band that from being long-term childhood friends has become a close bonding band for catchy modern rock!

At his absolute best however, such as on ‘Looking For Love’ he has created something the equal of ‘Free As A Bird’ (and that’s not necessarily a backhanded compliment) with Beatlesque production values more shameless than Oasis.

Of course if the man that inspired ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ can’t rip off The Beatles....anyway, I have to be honest - I played this album several times before connecting with it, but was rewarded for the effort. It is weighed down with piano based ballads, for fans of Julian Lennon, it’s much more in the style of the chart topping ‘Saltwater’ than say his early catchier pop songs.

HOW ABOUT I BE ME (AND YOU BE YOU) SINEAD O’CONNOR

A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRUTH VAN HALEN

‘The Lion and The Cobra’ was the best debut album by any female artist and the blueprint for angry female rock, that everyone since aspired to, but few attained.

This troubled woman with her suicide attempts and conversion to the priesthood and the now infamous ripping up a picture of the Pope on American prime time, did more than anyone else to derail her career.

There is always the hope she will deliver something to rival that excellent debut, but sadly yet again falls a long way short. O’Conner still has an incredible voice that is totally unique artist. Occasionally she shines, such as on ‘Take Off Your Shoes’ her intensity and sparse instrumental is part Joy Division, part Kate Bush and it’s a genuine ‘Nothing Compares’ moment. ‘Back Where You Belong’ she captures a beautiful breathless vulnerability in her vocals that is sadly resigned, yet lyrically carries a positive, all be it religious message of redemption.

Thankfully this is not one of her dreadful Christian albums, or a sprawling indulgent collection.

These ten songs are diverse and the album it must be said, has some sublime moments. ‘Very Far From Home’ is a cross between ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ and ‘Everybody Hurts.’ On ‘I Had A Baby’ she sings an intensely personal song that lyrically is as confronting as anything she has ever done. Fittingly the album closes with ‘VIP’ a more traditional Irish song with minimalist instrumentation that reflects on her brief flirtation with stardom.

Let’s not forget, McCartney wrote ‘When I’m Sixty Four’, ‘Martha My Dear’ and ‘Your Mother Should Know’ so it is no surprise that his own composition, ‘My Valentine’ is the equal of anything in this collection.

Other composers covered, include, Harold Arlen (McCartney performs ‘Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive’), the man that wrote the score for ‘The Wizard of Oz’, not to mention the classic Frank Sinatra songs, ‘That Old’ Black Magic’ and ‘Stormy Weather.’ A highlight is the song, ‘Inchworm’ by Frank Loesser, he wrote numerous Broadway musicals, notably ‘Guys and Dolls.’ Most people might remember the Muppets covering this track, but it has also been covered by Doris Day and McCartney protégé, Mary Hopkins. As you would expect, the cheekily titled ‘Kisses On The Bottom’ (of a letter, honestly) is a who’s who of special guests, notably Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and Diana Krall.

Following hot on the heals of an incredible Super Bowl performance, this album is a massive return to form. Love or hate her, this is a shamelessly contemporary dance album, the Abba inspired ‘Girls Gone Wild’ could pack any dance floor anywhere in the world. Never one to shy away from controversy, Maddy has delivered her most controversial album since ‘Erotic.’ Lyrically, from ‘Gang Bang’ to ‘I F**ed Up’ (the sensitive power ballad) this is certainly not an album for the faint hearted – if you think woman in their fifties shouldn’t be sexy, you might want to avoid this one.

The first single, ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ features Madonna delivering an Eminen style rap, only it’s not embarrassing, it’s actually very cool. The Shampoo sounding ‘B-day Song’ which is a bit Altered Images, a bit Kylie is the most memorable track on the album, even though its perhaps more suitable choice for a fourteen year old.

I wonder whether anyone will give a rat’s arse about Lady Ga Ga’s 12th studio album? It is certainly telling Madonna has taken to twitter and the talk show circuit to shift some units.

WRECKING BALL BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

Let’s face it, all those album with Sammy Hager and Gary Cherone (ex-Extreme) were rubbish and not proper Van Halen albums.

Finally after 27 years they are back with the greatest front man in the history of rock, David Lee Roth. Diamond Dave can’t really sing so great, but at the age of 57, he can still do karate kicks designed to knock a Samurai off a horse (albeit a miniature pony these days). It’s worth mentioning, Eddie’s son, Wolfgang is now the bass player and frankly who cares, no one is missing Michael Anthony.

The first single, ‘Tattoo’ was a bit of a false start, not their finest moment, however ‘She’s The Woman’ it must be said is the best song ever created by well anyone up to now really, it’s phenomenal.

What makes this album work is Lee Roth’s humor, on ‘As If’ a song that sounds like son of ‘Panama’ he sings ‘I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor, rich is better totally better’ then Eddie chips in with a solo to rival his work on Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ and frankly what more could you want? Just a brief warning, the bluesy bonus track DVD is best avoided, no one wants to see how badly Lee Roth has aged.

I am not sure what went wrong with Springsteen after ‘Born In The USA’ – it has been one mediocre album after another since he parted ways with the E-street band.

For many, he is the poor man’s Bob Dylan, only he sings songs about cars and girls and the occasional ironic political anthem. ‘We Take Care of Our Own’ sounds like a mini return to form, it has a lot of the hallmarks of the classic Springsteen sound, but is a little more ’52 Channels’ than ‘Born To Run.’ ‘Easy Money’ is a Steve Earle ‘Copperhead Road’ kind of moment, only a bit shit. ‘Shacked and Drawn’ is a forgettable hoedown that sounds like Eric Cartman taking the piss. ‘Jack of all Trades’ is the depressing piano based ballad, whose minimalism exposes what a hack this once great writer has become, it just drags on and on and never ends.

‘Death To My Hometown’ is drawing on his recent Celtic forays and despite a solid backbeat, is a cliqued steaming file of dog poo, complete with a very bad Irish accent. ‘This Depression’ is another slow one and is a truly annoying with all the bells and whistles (great female backing vocalists and a big guitar solo) but at the end of the day, the depression ironically belongs to the listener.

The title track, is another irrelevant Irish moment and again why a man who can rock like Springsteen, needs to draw insincerely on influences he does not have is beyond me.

LULU LOU REED & METALLICA Any album that can piss off 35 million Metallica fans must be doing something right.

A bunch of angry Metallica fans are feeling ripped off, having been sold unrepresentative music, while the 7 people on earth that still buy new Lou Reed material are wondering why their hero allowed a crusty metal band to wreck an otherwise awesome album (obviously he did it for the money).

Lyrically this not exactly breaking new ground for Lou - ‘Blue Mask’ and ‘Berlin’ explore similar themes – he has traded on low brow adult concepts for forty years and its all a bit passé, that does not deter him trying to shock us. It seems like a lot has gone terribly wrong in the mix on ‘Lulu’, it’s like the respective egos of everyone involved, intimidated studio engineers to push everyone’s parts to 11, then someone refused to edit the material – do these hookless songs really need to run for up to 11 minutes each?

It has been said many times before but it needs to be said at least 3000 more times that James Hetfield’s lyrical contribution leaves a lot to be desired, on ‘The View’ singing ‘I am the table’ over and over is not exactly a Shakespeare sonnet, in fact to my ear his contributions frequently sounds like a Spinal Tap piss take. Still overall, Lulu is moderately better than ‘Metal Machine Music’ the instrumental feedback album Reed recorded in 1975.

ROSIE BURGESS TRIO SET SAIL FOR TASSIE (yes, wE KNOW, WE’VE USED THAT LINE BEFORE!) There are moments in life when everything clicks in to place and something powerful happens. The creation of brand new album, “Before I Set Sail”, for The Rosie Burgess Trio was one of these moments. “The album seemed to totally write itself,” Burgess recalls, “we made this album in a month!

It’s unheard of in my world to do anything that quickly, but somehow everything just fit together perfectly and nothing went wrong.

It was just unbelievably calm waters and smooth sailing the whole way through.”

And calmer waters is where Burgess now hopes to find herself. “The last few years have been so crazy. I’ve had enough ups and downs for a whole lifetime, and that’s a bit what this album is about.

It’s the rising from the ashes, it’s the moment where you finally get your head above the waves, it’s the love and the life and everything in between that makes the journey so wonderful” she says.

Featuring Sam Lohs on stomp box drums, and Tim Bennett on bass guitar, this new collection of songs on “Before I Set Sail” showcase Burgess’s effortlessly personable song writing and the band’s strong connection as musicians and friends. “There is so much of all of us in this album.” Burgess says. “Sam and Tim had a big hand in the arrangements and we all coproduced the album.

They might be officially my songs but there’s a real piece of each of us in every song.”

Sometimes it’s hard to fit people into boxes, and the music being produced by The Rosie Burgess Trio is no exception. Sliding from folk to blues to gypsy-roots and back, the trio cross more genres than state borders, giving off “more energy than an illegally sparked firecracker” [Drum Media, Sydney], whilst still maintaining their unmistakable flavour.

And cross borders they do. Living primarily in airports and touring vans, the trio have been crisscrossing the world for the last three years, leaving behind them a trail of lost sunglasses, broken flip-flops and adoring audiences.

saucey sparkle - burlesque tales Miss Burlesque Tasmania was held last month and I’m super excited to announce my girl from The Diamonds of Burlesque Missy De Meanour took out first place and is crowned our Miss Burlesque Tasmania 2012! She’s not only won the title but also $1000 and a trip to Sydney to compete against the other State Finalists for a chance to win the title Miss Burlesque Australia. She’s received loads of media attention and instant recognition as one of Australia’s top Burlesque performers!

I got a chance to catch up with Missy as she frantically prepares for one of Australia’s largest and most publicised Burlesque Events.

Missy, you are obviously being showered with attention over your title winning, how are you dealing with all this attention?

Well, it hasn’t really sunk in yet! so seeing myself in the newspaper has been a bit odd!

How are your preparations for the Finals going and are you nervous?

Oh wow, i’m super nervous! But more so excited to meet all of these amazing burlesque performers! I’m freaking out a little trying to find a psychiatrists couch, though!

What do you think scored you the most points from the judges at the Tassie Heats?

I think it was definitely my

sprinkler dance moves - you can’t go wrong with the sprinkler!

Which of your winning acts was your favourite to perform and why?

Definitely my unique because it gave me a chance to show another side of myself - the scary vinyl festishy crazy side!

What else is coming up for Missy De Meanour, what does the future hold?

Well, apart from the grand final of Miss Burlesque Australia, we have a fundraiser April 13th at Flamingos to help send our Mr Boylesque Tasmania, Atari Playa, to Sydney with me!

And no doubt will be making an appearance at our Diamond shows and the monthly Marmalade Cabaret - as well as jumping on board to teach burlesque at Diamond Class Pole and Burlesque School!

“Our troupe consists of our cameo star Ginger Pussee (aka Harvey Coughlan), our compere Sandy Lagore and a rotating list of casual performers who can cater to the desires of the hosting venue including drag, burlesque and camp performers.

Harvey has been involved in theatrical production since 1990, starting as a producer for amateur theatre. He has directed productions of the sound of music, little red riding hood, Pinocchio and the wizard of www.sauce.net.au

His first major production was Grease the musical at the university studio Theatre in 1994. In late 1994 Harvey moved his theatrical work to New Norfolk and began teaching theatre to students at the Glenora District High School where he created the HC Theatre Company.

Here Harvey directed and produced performances of The Pied piper of Hamlin, Sleeping beauty and ease on down the road (a cover of wizard of oz) with students of the school. Harvey returned to Hobart in 1996 and Directed productions of Peter pan and Alice in wonderland before taking a break from

production. In 2009 Harvey returned to theatre in the form of a drag performer providing private drag shows and working casually in conjunction with Les Girls in Harrington Street.

In August of 2011 Harvey decided to create his own drag performance and created Ginger Promotions which has provided well received performances to growing crowds at such venues as the willows tavern and the windjammers convention centre.

COOL STORY BRO ... OR NIGHTMARE?

JOE CORTINA IS AN EX GREEN BERET, a former airborne special operations officer and US Army Training Center commander. Joe Cortina’s subsequent experiences as an intelligence investigator and anti-terrorist adviser brought him to such hotbeds of turmoil as the State of Israel, adjacent Middle East nations, and Central America.

Br Nathanael: Joe, what is Depleted Uranium?

Joe Cortina: Depleted Uranium, also known as DU, is a by-product of enriched uranium used in nuclear reactors and weapons. Thus, it is called “depleted” uranium. Basically, it’s a waste product of the nuclear industry. When Depleted Uranium is vaporized into the air it is DEADLY TO ALL LIFE on earth INCLUDING our own soldiers.

Br Nathanael: So why is it used by the US military?

Joe Cortina: Due to its high density it has greater penetration potential against armor and other hard targets. It can be used for armor or in kinetic energy projectiles to defeat armor – as it’s about twice as dense as lead, and unlike tungsten, will ignite at temperatures over 600F. Br Nathanael: How is it dissipated into the environment under war scenarios?

Joe Cortina: Used in cannons, rockets and bombs, Depleted Uranium vaporizes after the heat-of-impact and then produces profuse DU dust particles as small as 5 microns and can travel long distances when airborne.

Second World War and sent to Brigadier General LB Abrams on October 30 1943 provides the evidence. In the memo, Conant states that dust particles carrying Depleted Uranium are equally inhaled by US military personnel. The amount necessary to cause death to a person inhaling the material is extremely small…that only one millionth of a gram in a person’s body would be fatal. He goes on to say that there are no known methods of treatment.

Br Nathanael: What have we done? Have any effects of the poisons of Depleted Uranium shown up in our own US soldiers since these endless serial wars started?

Joe Cortina: The evidence is legion.

“Anybody, civilian or soldier, who breathes these particles has a permanent dose and it is not going to decrease very much over time,” stated Dr Leonard Dietz, a nuclear physicist with 33 years’ experience, as he told the New York Daily News.

“In the long run,” Dietz said, “veterans exposed to DU’s ceramic uranium oxide have a major problem.”

In concert with Dietz’s analysis, Dr Falk, whom I mentioned above, and other authorities state that inhaled particles of depleted uranium dust will either lodge in the lungs or be carried through the body’s cell walls and “affect the master code” – the expression of the DNA. Then we have Terry Jemison of the Department of Veterans Affairs who said that of the 592,561 discharged veterans from the 1991 Gulf Wars through the War in Iraq, 179,310 are receiving disability compensation and another 24,763 cases are pending.

Br Nathanael: I have seen photographs of infants born in Iraq and Afghanistan during this period and they are truly heart-breaking. I have also seen photos of young children maimed for life.

Joe Cortina: Let me put it this way, and remember, I speak as a former Green Beret who has served my country faithfully and honorably.

Now that these horrors have been exposed – including the FACT that our ‘Government’ has LONG SINCE known about the deadly nature of these lethal threats to all living organisms –

rational people can only conclude that those with whom we have entrusted our very lives are lying, sociopathic, mass-murdering criminals – from our top-ranking Military leaders all the way to the President – and MUST be charged, tried and convicted of committing mass murder.

Br Nathanael: So, what is the fate of the sixhundred-thousand-plus and the growing daily number of returned Vets who have been exposed to breathing in DU dust particles?

Joe Cortina: Simple – they will all die of depleted uranium contamination – some sooner – some later.

Some already have and will father babies that will be horribly deformed and suffer the very same grief they have caused countless innocent Afghan and Iraqi parents by saturating their environment with radioactive death.

Joe Cortina: There is no ’safe’ dosage rate below which dangers disappear. “No threshold-dose,” says John Gofman, a former Associate Director of Livermore National Laboratory, one of the scientists who worked on the atomic bomb and co-discoverer of uranium-233.

Gofman concludes, “Serious, lethal effects from minimal radiation doses are not ‘hypothetical,’ or ‘just theoretical,’ or ‘imaginary.’ They are real.”

Joe Cortina: Our government has been lying about the risks since day-one of the Gulf Wars beginning in 1991. During the first period, Desert Storm, approximately 350 tons were spread in Iraq.

During the subsequent wars – the 2003 invasion of Iraq - nearly 2000 Tons turned that nation into a radioactive wasteland. Our soldiers who have returned home, suffering from Depleted Uranium’s poison, are calling their deadly ailments, “The Gulf Syndrome.”

Br Nathanael: Is it used in Afghanistan as well?

Joe Cortina: Absolutely! There has been even MORE tons of this deadly poison spread over Afghanistan by an irresponsible Government gone mad! These deadly micro-particles are often carried up into the atmosphere and released with rain hundreds of miles away.

Br Nathanael: What a horrible nightmare. I have heard that these demonic weapons are called “dirty bombs.” Is there any validation of this in technical terms?

Self described as “Hobart’s most exhausted and scattered singer-songwriter”, Christopher Coleman hits the Midlands Highway this Easter weekend to debut his latest musical project, the Christopher Coleman Collective.

From age four, Coleman has spent his life playing with western musical instruments, writing and touring both nationally and internationally for Tasmanian groups including HANNAH, Adam Cousens Band, The Blue Mosquitoes and The Colemans. In his mid teens he threw his hand to prose and poetry.

He describes this new Collective as a “lyrical jam band” and the group is made up of six of his closest friends.

The Christopher Coleman Collective are supporting the Rosie Burgess Band around Tasmania this weekend, starting with the Royal Oak in Launceston on Thursday the 12th (8:30pm), Brookfield Margate on Saturday the 14th (7:30pm) and the Republic Bar & Café in North Hobart on Sunday the 15th (9pm).

Brisbane buzz-band Cub Scouts prepare to unleash their new single, “Do You Hear,” on the eve of a massive 17-date national tour. The new track follows on the back of their first single, the contagious, steel-drum driven “Evie,” which provided a carefree (and constant) summer soundtrack for listeners of triple j.

With radio waves duly conquered, the band quickly jumped on the road with Pluto Jonze earlier this year, for their first national tour, completing the whirlwind rise from garage obscurity to national touring powerhouse.

Signing to booking agents Village Sounds, their upcoming tour kicks off March 22, giving them their second whip-around of the country in two months, this time sharing the stage with pop giants Ball Park Music.

However, the band still has had time for a quick visit back to producer John Castle (Washington, Cat Empire), to put the finishing touches on their upcoming EP. Squeezing this session into their newly busy schedule clearly paid off, with the band proving that the infectious pop of “Evie” wasn’t just a one-off.

There are some vaccinations that gay & bisexual men in particular should consider having to protect themselves against several preventable sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). These include hepatitis A and hepatitis B, which both cause inflammation of the liver. The other vaccination that should be considered is for the human papillomavirus (HPV) which is the virus that causes genital and anal warts, and in some cases is associated with certain types of cancer.

Hepatitis A & B For hepatitis A, two doses of the vaccine are required, the second dose is given 6 to 12 months after the initial vaccination. For hepatitis B, three doses of the vaccination are required with an interval of 1 to 2 months between the first and the second dose with a third dose at 2 to 5 months after the second dose. There is also a hepatitis A and B combination vaccination available. Three doses of the vaccine are required; the second dose after 1 month and the third 6 months after the initial vaccination. For HIV-positive men, hepatitis B antibody level should be tested yearly to check for the need for a booster.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) There is also a vaccination available which protects against several strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), two strains that cause genital and anal warts, and two strains commonly associated with some cancers.

Some strains of this virus have been associated with abnormal cell changes on the penis or anus, as well as the mouth and throat, with a few strongly associated with cancer. These are the same strains of HPV that are associated with cervical cancer in women. This vaccine has been offered to women, and is now also now indicated for men up to the age of 26.

However, it is not currently available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), so the price is not subsidized. The vaccine is most effective if given prior to exposure, however, research has shown that even if you have had prior HPV exposure you may still benefit from vaccination. If you already have one or more of the strains in the vaccine, you will benefit from the prevention of infection and disease from the strains you have not yet been exposed to.

In people with evidence of prior infection, vaccination can help protect from reacquisition or recurrence of infections leading to warts and other cell changes, including cancer. Research is confirming if this may also be the case for people who have undergone treatment for HPV related external genital lesions. Speak to your doctor about your options for vaccination.

Sunday the 8th of March saw the 6th annual Southern Shootout at Dover skatepark, the most southern skatepark in the world.

As usual the whole town turned out to check it out, which always gives this contest an X-Games feel.

The sun was out and it was a beautiful day and skaters came from all around. First up for the day was the 14 and under boys. Sam Lacy came in 4th, Daniel Mason, the latest addition to the Jimmys skate team, showed why he’d been selected, skating the whole park smooth and fast and putting togethor a string of tricks to come in 3rd.

The fight for first was probably the highlight of the day. Fergus Doherty and Beu Kelly have been going head to head in this division in all the comps for the last couple of years and they stepped it up another notch at Dover. They went trick for trick all day and every time one looked like they had the advantage the other would step up with a hammer. Usually Fergus has the advantage, but not this time, the little bulldog that is Beu Kelly was not taking no for an answer and stepped up to first place.

17 and unders was next and this was a very tight contest that had the judges scratching their heads as to who to give it to. This was a good example of what skateboarding is all about, a bunch of mates having fun and skating together. In the end it was Tom Watt in 3rd, Harry Purdon in 2nd and Finn Dundas taking out first.

For the first time ever this event had a girls section which was great to see. Brooke Mason and Sophie Baile skated head to head all day and were hard to separate with Brooke in the end coming out on top.

And then it was onto the Open men’s, which everyone had come out to see and the event didn’t dissapoint. Josh Morse skated rad all day in his first contest to come in 4th.

Tassie legend Jason Saunders dusted off the cobwebs to enter his first contest in some time and showed he hadnt lost it, skating hard and fast all day to come in 3rd.

At the end of the day, much like the 14 and unders, this was always going to be a two horse race. Christoph Speers, who is Tassie’s best all terrain skater and Ben Smith, who is probably Tassie’s best street skater, dooked it out for first honours.

In the end Smithers had one to many hammers and took out the Southern shootout for the first time.

There is one more major contest to go this summer and that is the Tasmanian State Titles at EC skatepark in Hobart on the 21st of April.

This is always the biggest contest of the year so make sure you get down and check it out.

game review: mass effect 3

I have to confess I didn’t enjoy the original Mass Effect. As a long time Bioware fan (Baldur’s Gate II is probably the best game ever made) I was pretty excited at the prospect of a new sci-fi trilogy. However, as much as I wanted to like it, I thought the structure and gameplay were a mess. I really dug the world, the narrative and the characters though, and so I gave Bioware the benefit of the doubt with Mass Effect 2. Thankfully, the Canadians delivered everything they promised and I was totally blown away by the second installment.

That brings us to Mass Effect 3; the epic conclusion to the trilogy that Bioware announced what seems like a lifetime ago. Let me start by saying that the biggest problem with Mass Effect 3 is that it follows on from Mass Effect 2. Everything in the game is inevitably going to be compared to what came before it, and quite frankly many aspects come up a bit short. However, that isn’t to say that Mass Effect 3 isn’t an amazing game in its own right.

If you’re importing a save file over, all your decisions and the impact that they’ve had on the galaxy are seamlessly integrated into your version of the game. This is a feat in itself and I can safely say that no other developer has managed anything like this on such a scale.

Starting a new game with a new Commander Shepard also works perfectly well, and while you’ll get more out of the experience if you’ve played the first two games, anyone can dive right into this amazing space opera.

Not much has changed from Mass Effect 2 in the gameplay department, you’ll still be gunning down husks and flinging biotics at geth, while also engaging in conversations with a plethora of space-faring characters and making tough decisions about the fate of the galaxy. The conversation wheel is back, and the social aspect and narrative side of the game are still the standouts. There a few new weapons and a fairly deep upgrade system to keep you tinkering, but the fundamentals of the game will be recognizable to anyone who has experience with the second installment.

Where Mass Effect 3 falls short of its predecessor is primarily in the story department. While there are some truly epic missions, the thing that made Mass Effect 2 so great was the lone ranger aspect of the story and this has been all but replaced by a responsibility to Earth and the Alliance. The more personal elements of Mass Effect 2 have also been ditched in favour of a story on a grander scale. While this obviously complements the narrative of Mass Effect 3, I can’t help but miss the large cast of companions and their loyalty missions that gave Mass Effect 2 its personality, as well as many of its most heartfelt moments.

The new side quests probably rank as the most heinous crime Bioware has committed since Dragon Age II. The overwhelming majority are simple fetch quests that are delivered to you in the form of overheard conversations that you probably don’t even recall listening to. Bioware makes no attempt to disguise this blatant FedExing, and I would have much rather they spent time developing deeper side quests than turning me into a glorified postman.

I probably don’t need to tell you that Mass Effect 3 is a great game, as you’ve no doubt completed it already. Despite some curious design choices, Mass Effect 3 will still have you wondering where large chunks of the day have gone, and that is always a good thing in video games.

Graphics 4/5 Some texture pop in and some minor frame rate issues are the only problems here.

Sound 4/5 Excellent voice acting as usual coupled with appropriately epic music.

Gameplay 4/5 Not too much has changed here from Mass Effect 2 which is a good thing, just don’t get me started on those side quests…

Replay Value 5/5 You’ll want to play multiple times as different classes, making different decisions as you go.

There’s also an optional multiplayer component to keep you interested.

When I think of Easter, I think of dying hard-boiled eggs, lots of fun hiding them, eating chocolate & spring, because I am from the northern hemisphere. This Easter I am going on a road trip with friends exploring parts of Tassie I haven’t been to yet.

How do you feel about clothing manufacture that is sweatshop based?

It’s bad!!! It is also scary as it can be so easy to disassociate from it especially if you don’t know what’s going on.
