the hilltop hoods According to the organisers, Clint Pease and Stacy Orin, we should prepare ourselves “for an event of epic proportions set to make music festival history across Tasmania. Hosted across two days and showcasing a massive medley of the very best Australian and international acts, there is bound to be something for everyone at the BREATH OF LIFE FESTIVAL 2012. All in support of the Australian Lung Foundation. “The Breath of Life festival will bring together all of the very best of festivals, catering for the young and “young at heart”, say the festival organisers. “Both days will offer something truly unique and will deliver the crème de la crème of national and international music. There will be a lot of cross over and something for everyone throughout the weekend. This event will satisfy nearly everyone. We expect an attendance of over 18000 people throughout the weekend.” “Breath of Life is going to bring a new era of festivals and events to the Launceston region”. Get ready for March long weekend…for those who think they’ve seen it all…get ready to be impressed… Breath of Life festival was created in 2007 by the Lizotte family to raise funds and awareness for the Australian Lung Foundation, enabling them to continue research of a rare lung condition that took their Mother’s life. Artists such as Beccy Cole, Casey Chambers, Troy Caser-Daly, Jimmy Barnes , Deni Hines, Amber Lawrence, and many more threw their weight behind the Lizotte family to ensure a highly successful outcome for the festival and the extremely important cause. Organisers, Clint Pease and Stacy File continue to work closely with The Australian Lung Foundation, The LIzotte Family and original creators of the festival to ensure the long term success of the Breath of Life Festival and its values and goals for the Lung Foundation and for the Tasmanian community. “After meeting with Clint Pease last week I now can truly see that this event has potential to go far beyond the desired outcomes that we initially thought it could.” Said Mark Lizotte, (aka Diesel). “We have full faith in all involved and look forward to the exciting development of this event for years to come.” So…whatever your age or inclination, the musical juggernaut that is Breath of Life Festival is sure to take your breath away!” Acts announced so far: Main Stage: Icehouase, Eskimo Joe, Grinspoon, Hilltop Hoods, The Living End, Boy and Bear, Short Stack, Children Collide, Parkway Drive, Amity Affliction, The Getaway, Plan, Owl Eyes, Rockwiz Live Ministry of Sound, Clubbers Guide Arena, Sneaky Sound System, The Potbelleez, Tonite Only, Goodwill, The Only, Vandalism, Minx, Denzal Park, More To be announced... the funkoars THIS SH*T IS ABOUT TO GET REAL

by david williams

The Funkoars are the real deal, no show-ponies here. They’ve been self-destructive. They’ve screwed up and burnt bridges. They are also mad showmen, known to play hard and party hard. At the core, they have been tortured artists, in my opinion. It now seems that the rage that once pointed back at themselves has now been channelled into positive action. They have focussed their energy, concentrated their talents, made amends where possible, and their efforts have returned dividends, producing the album, “The Quickening”, which recently debuted at #1 on the Urban ARIA chart. They have turned life’s lemons into musical lemonade, and soon their tour bus will take the turnoff to Tassie. While on the road, in WA, the boys of bedlam bashed out some beautifully simple answers on their smart phones to the stupid questions I had asked them. Here are their answers, raw and real, just like them. Trials (T) Sesta (S) DJ Reflux (R)

(D) What have been some recent highlights for you? T - musically, watching Vents’ album come to life, their live set is f#cking bonkers. Personally, modern warfare drops next month and the battlefield beta looks pretty good!! (S) album just came out, it’s doing well, just started touring with my male friends. Sitting in lots of small cars with not alot of room. It’s awesome.

(R) We have just started touring so most of our energy has been getting the new show off and popping. Really happy with how this has been accepted. (D) Please tell me a bit about the development of the lyrics and beats in the track, ‘Where I am”. How was it determined that this was to be the first ‘single’ from the album? (S) alot of the album is about what’s going on with us on the road. It’s full of alot of inside jokes, things we talk about in the tour van and hotel rooms. Where I am we thought was a good note to set off our reintegration to society. (R) We thought the energy and vibe suited how we wanted to come back out with since our last album. Super happy with the track so it made sense. (D) Is there anything different about the process you took to make the album, that was different to what you have done before? (S) Definitely had a more relaxed and natural approach. Had a really good time recording it and I think consequentially our rhymes were much more honest and true to the kind of nonsense which circulates our minds at any given time. (R) We actually made many tracks and culled them down to what you hear now. It gave us more scope to sculpt the sound and flow of the album. (D) You guys have been working hard for many years now, to what extent does it feel like your time has come? (T) Eternally pessimistic so it’s probably already been and gone, or never coming. (S)We have always suffered from delusions of grandeur and thus always thought any point of time was “ours”

But now with our more conscious awareness of reality it has never felt less like “our time” (R) The hard work never ends to be honest. We just make the music we enjoy and also have a blast playing it live. In that regard.. Our time has been and continues to be. (D) How have you guys changed, personally, and as a group, since you started? T - I traded studio time for personal hygiene and I’m happy with the results, I stink and have a bunch of records out. As a group the solidarity is thicker than ever, until the third night on the road, then people start going to maccas without you and shit (fuad, hons). (S) Bottomed out. Now desperately and apologetically clawing our way back up. (R) I think we have gotten smarter to the music biz. We have matured personally and of course this shows in our music too I feel. (D) What can you now look back on now and smile about, but at the time the situation did not seem funny? T - probably the major evacuation of a hotel in geelong we roughly based ‘whereiam’ on. Few fire engines and a fuck off fine. Hilarious. (S) Every experience we have ever had with Qantas. (R) Hahaha. Pretty much our whole career. (D) You’re famous in the Hip-hop scene for putting on some crazy shows, what have you got planned for us on this upcoming tour? T - we don’t rehearse so there’s a good chance if it looks like it’s the first time were doing something, it is. Sometimes it works, sometimes it’s us playing the law and order theme song. (s) we are never to sure what is going to

(R) Joining Golden Era Records has been one of the best things. Also... Dropping our new Album! (D) The name of your new album, ‘The Quickening’, is the same term used in the ‘The Highlander’ movies and series. Wikipedia explains it as, “When an Immortal is beheaded, there is apowerful energy release from their body which is called a Quickening. Lead Highlander: The Series actor Adrian Paul explained, “The Quickening is the receiving of all the power and knowledge another immortal has obtained throughout his/her life. It is like the receiving of a sacrament or a massive orgasm.” What is the tie-in between the terms in the movies and series with this album? T - ambiguous is the word. There are hundreds of sci fi references littered throughout because X and I are freaks for that shit, but in all honesty like most timeless titles it’s fart related. (D) The album debuted at #1 on the ARIA Urban Chart and was, at last check, #11 highest selling album in the country overall, how have you been enjoying this success? T - Charts are nice and it’s pretty hilarious even seeing our names amongst the so fresh hits of summer winter and beyond, depends how you gauge success I guess, some people think it’s a wage or hitting the charts, just seeing people know the words is enough for me. (S) pattin each other on the back a lot. Freaking out a little. It was really good to finally get the album out there after the clueless hours and stress behind getting it out there. We all lost perspective of everything.. It was really nice to see how the album was received and what individual songs people liked the most.

happen at any given show. Depends very much on the crowd. So put on your party sandals and let’s do this. (R) Vincent D’Onofrio may make a sneaky appearance along with Alot of the new album and new haircuts (D) Who’s supporting you on the shows in Tassie, and how do they fit the bill? T - the full line up, mase and mattic from our home town who put in the most hype extra jos set on, hospice legend and king of consideration Ciecmate and noname nath as well as the inconsiderate id Vents and newly appointed IP Fuad. The whole bills jams and jams hard! I think it’s a great great representation of aus rap, where it’s been, where it’s going. (R) We have Vents from Golden Era, Trials has produced his last two albums so he is a perfect fit to our show. Ciecmate has always been a Mainstay in the Hiphop scene... Operating Broken Tooth Ent. A great fit aswell to us. Mase and Matic have a great live show That really suits the energy of our shows. (D) After you tour around the country, what have you got planned? T - modern warfare and trying to get another script for oxazepam. (s) play some good new xbox games that will have dropped by then. Skyrim.... Cod.. Saints row 3 all of that. Make some new music... Always working ok beats. Sorry if there is many typo.. Doin on iPhone is bs. Pce (R) Gonna play some xbox... Maybe drop a Filmclip or two. Working on a new Golden Era mixtape too. Are you ready to party? Really get crazy? Friday, 4th November, Venue Six, Hobart Saturday, 5th November, Hotel New York, Launceston

Sam Cole

Samuel Cole & The Mornings Samuel Cole and the Mornings are among the unstoppable acts coming out of Tasmania’s somewhat untouched music scene. While the state has been breeding fine-blooded musicians for decades now, today’s crop of artists is setting a new bar and this endlessly dedicated sextet is amongst the instigators. This year they have released their second record Burn Our Clothes, and supported the likes of Eagle and the Worm, Trial Kennedy, The Boat people and Jinja Safari.

Their flavoursome indie-folk resonance on their new album comprises of Samuel’s guitar and distinctly Australian, mesmerizing vocals, and his thought provoking, honest and poetic lyrics into something of a Paul Kelly bred, Bon iver’s next of kin combination. Harmonies and unique melodies are brought to the table with the threaded bass, intricate keys, full flavoured drums and violin of terrifically talented band, The Mornings. Ensuring their brand of alternative/indie/folk is left firmly in the hide of the Tasmanian music scene this stunning group has been tirelessly playing Hobart gigs and have earned themselves a dignified fan base, as well as establishing their well-deserved place in Melbourne’s sleepless music scene. Previously Sam Cole has also graced the shores of New Zealand, Sydney, and Adelaide performing solo. After refining their sound and incorporating both new and old songs with different instrumentation, The Mornings will be sharing their musical love across the country for the first time with a fresh line up on the Burn Our Clothes Tour, from October 27. The Burn our clothes Australian south coast tour commences at their home base at The Waratah, in support of harmonic indie-pop trailblazers Cloud Control. From there they will head north to play a string of dates in Melbourne, Mt. Gambier, Adelaide, Geelong, Warrnambool, and Bendigo. On the way they will be meeting up with fellow Tassie phenomenon Adam Cousens, who has just released his latest single This Road Ahead. Supporting them for the entire leg of the tour will be Tané Emia-Moore, Melbourne based Tassie artist, whose powerful solo gigs have the sound and effect of a full band.

Tané Emia-Moore

By Scott Webb

Tané is a 20-something indie-poppy-rocky so and so, originally from Tasmania, now based in Melbourne.

With fast, fluid, resolving indie-pop songs, as well as a somber bag of blues and croons, his stage show is a powerful, emotive, and very personal insight into the artist himself. His solo shows have been getting blood pumping and toes tapping for 2 years now, winning him first place in songwriting comps around Melbourne, securing him publicity opportunities in Beat Magazine, BalconyTV, and building up a great word-of-mouth avalanche. After winning the Elwood Lounge’s Open Mic Battle 1st prize Tané will be recording his debut EP in 2011 at the acclaimed Sing Sing Recording Studios (Kanye West, The Killers, Kimbra), aimed for Release in early 2012. This will be closely followed by launches in Melbourne, Hobart, and Adelaide, building up to a national tour. Do yourself a favor and get along to a gig before the labels get in on this young upand-comer. For gig info and more go to: www.facebook. com/tanemusic

Flo Rida Low Rida

In researching this article I found Flo Rida had been topping charts annually since his debut single “Low” which featured on the 2008 album Mail on Sunday and reached #1 in the US Billboard Charts. Since then Flo Rida has released two chart topping club hits (Right Round, and Club Can’t Handle Me) and has been frantically running through international tour circuits. “Over the last few years, I’ve been everywhere – Africa, Japan, Greece, South America, Russia, The Middle East, Australia, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines and all over the United States and Europe. You name it, I went there.” Flo says. In June 2011 Flo Rida was charged with a DUI after being pulled over driving his $1.7M Bugatti Veyron around Miami Beach. Despite this, the Miami rapper hasn’t let his recent troubles with the law affect his productivity, releasing the lead single ‘Good Feeling’ from his upcoming album Only 1 Rida (Part 2) earlier this month. Complete with acoustic guitars, keyboard synths

and computerised beats, it is noticeably different to his earlier music, featuring a sample of Etta James’ 1962 soul hit ‘Something’s Got a Hold on Me”. It seems Flo Rida knows his audience and knows how to deliver what they want, but the 32 year old is still trying to expand and experiment. “On each album I try to show a lot of versatility, but every time it’s going to get bigger and bigger, because there’s no way I can give my fans the same old thing’. This versatility was something he was trying to show in his 2010 album Only One Flo: Part 1 “With this album, I definitely feel like I have to show people that I’m the life of the party. But at the same time, I wanted to show people my romantic side, so there’s ‘Come With Me,’ which has more of an R&B feel and is geared toward the ladies. Then there’s ‘Respirator’ which warns young men about girls who lie.’ Tramar Dillard, known by his stage name Flo Rida grew up in the projects of Carol City, Florida. While studying International Business

Management at the University of Nevada, Flo was pushing his way into the music scene aided by frequent collaborations with Fresh Kid Ice (of 2 Live Crew fame). In 2006 Flo Rida moved back to Florida to sign a deal with independent record label Poe Boy Entertainment. Only a year later Flo released his debut album Mail on Sunday, then in 2009 released R.O.O.T.S which once again topped charts with the single ‘Right Round’ sampling Dead or Alive. I don’t care who you are, hitting the top of any music charts with three consecutive albums is impressive especially considering the competition on those Billboard Hot 100 charts which include artists like Britney Spears and Maroon 5. This kind of music is understandably a hard market to start out in let alone compete in, and that only makes the success of Flo Rida more notable. Despite this Flo Rida comes off as pretty grounded. “My mother instilled in us that you could be from the ghetto, but you don’t have to be of it. Nearly all of my friends have been to jail but not me.”

I remember the first time I heard Flo Rida. It was November 2010 during our first night in Thailand. After a few hours drinking at the hostel bar a Swedish girl invited myself and my Kiwi buddy out clubbing. We moved through the busy streets of Patong, past the gaggles of lady boys and guys trying to drag you into ping pong shows and at last tumbled into a dark and sweaty club. I remember one moment I was drinking at the bar and suddenly all the girls moved furiously to the dance floor, excitedly getting out their raunchiest dance moves. The smoke-stained speakers were pumping out ‘Club Can’t Handle Me”, at full volume, and people were just going crazy for it. Hip-pop club anthems have never been my thing but I’ve got a lot of respect for music that makes you feel something whether it’s sad introspection or the desperate need to throw your body around and dance.

Naug hyby natu re Naughty by nature Are You gonna Get Naughty? By: The Machine

“YOU DOWN WIT O.P.P.?” “HIPHOP HOORAY!… HO!… HEEEEYYYY!… HO!” The HipHop Anthem?… Naughty By Nature invented it! The Grammy Award winning, Platinum-album selling, New Jersey super-group, Naughty By Nature, has nearly a twenty-year track record of creating the hits and party anthems that have become the soundtrack to our lives. Their music has smashed through mainstream barriers all while remaining true to the sound, message and grit of the hood. And now, these three kings of the HipHop anthem have formally claimed their titles and named their forthcoming reunion album, “Anthem Inc.” in celebration. Life is good. Treach, Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee are back in the studio, doing what they do best: creating undeniably classic, hand-raising, life-affirming, HipHop music. “We wouldn’t have reunited if we didn’t think we could give people that authentic Naughty feeling,” says the group’s master lyricist Treach. “This new album is definitely gonna take you back, but just like we always did, we’ve invented a new sound, a bunch of new flows and after being without an album for so long, we’ve gotta lotta things to say.” Few groups in music can boast a near twenty-year career that has been both consistent and history making. Naughty By Nature, the Grammy and American Music Award winning rap trio, initially called “New Style”, began performing at talent shows and were discovered by fellow New Jersey native and then-emerging HipHop artist, Queen Latifah. Eventually signing the group to her management company “Flavor Unit Management”, Latifah helped them land a deal with Tommy Boy Records. Naughty By Nature’s self-titled debut album was released in 1991 and quickly assaulted the music charts with the instant classic #1 hit “O.P.P.”. The group quickly became crossover stars, while maintaining their ghetto sensibility. To date, their success and longevity as a HipHop group has been unparalleled. These three “Kings of The HipHop Anthem” went on to produce their follow-up albums that have www.sauce.net.au

become part of America’s HipHop legacy: “19 Naughty III”, “Poverty’s Paradise“ and “Nature’s Fury”. Inevitably, a break-up in 1999 would lead to the group members each following different, yet equally successful, personal endeavors. As a producer, Kay Gee went onto produce award winning music with artists including: Luther Vandross, Notorious B.I.G, Jaheim, Next and Zhane. As an actor, Treach found success in film and television offering critically acclaimed performances in HBO’s original series “The Sopranos” and “OZ”, along with “Jason’s Lyric”, “Soul Food”, the HipHop cult-classic “Juice” and several other films. As the marketing genius behind the group, Vin Rock developed Naughty Gear, one of the first HipHop inspired clothing lines. When he got a hold of the worldwide web, he mastered it with www.NaughtyByNature.com, further developing and expanding the reach of the Naughty brand. Throughout this time, Treach and Vin Rock continued to tour and perform around the world. In 2002, the duo struck a deal with TVT Records and produced their last album, IIcons. Fast forward to 2008… After years of steady touring and itching to get back in the studio, both Treach and Vin agreed, that in order for the next album to have that authentic sound and feel of Naughty By Nature, they must reunite with

DJ Kay Gee. At this same time, VH1 bestowed their coveted “HipHop Honor” to the group as innovators of our culture. Joining the ranks of Big Daddy Kane, Rakim and Eazy E., the group received their “HipHop Honors” in October of 2008. The group continues to tour globally, ripping stages from Australia to Canada and New Jersey to South Africa. Naughty By Nature is on their A-game and have no plans to stop anytime soon. In this next endeavor, they are completely independent and totally in control of their brand. Still setting trends, the group recently struck a deal with media- giant Microsoft, to cross promote their new single “Get To Know Me Better” with the release of the “HTC Touch Pro 2 Windows Mobile device”. With all that said, when Naughty By Nature tells you that they mean business, you’d better hold on – because this time around, it’s gonna be one hell of a ride.

all about anna anna lunoe By: The Machine

ISince 2006, Anna Lunoe has been leaving a trail of exhausted and ecstatic crowds wherever she goes.. Clubs throughout Australia have become her playground as promoters fly her from city to city each weekend to spin. She is a festival favorite with multiple appearances at Big Day Out, Splendour in the Grass, Parklife, Field Day, Falls Festival & more, steadily moving closer to the top of bill with each passing year. When international artists like Diplo, Daft Punk, M.I.A, Atrak or Soulwax come to town it’s more than likely Anna’s on support, throwing down a set that has the crowds and the main act talking for days. In the first few months of 2011, Anna performed across Australia on the Big Day Out tour, completed a month long USA club tour, wowed Japan for MTV and announced her return to Splendour In The Grass [with her all-girl DJ crew Hoops] plus made a successful leap further into the production world. Her first original production, a disco-inspired collaboration with Wax Motif called ‘Love Ting’ reaching #12 on the national independent radio charts & spent a whopping 3 months in the Aria Dance charts. Anna has racked up a mountain of flyer miles playing world renowned parties throughout Asia, Europe and the U.S. Flashing lights in NYC, Mad Decent & Dim Mak joints in LA, Raves in Kansas City, and all the way across the Atlantic at Ed Banger soirees in Paris, Vice shows through the UK, Razzamatazz in Spain, and Rust in Copenhagen to name a few. In 2009, Ministry of Sound approached her with the prestigious offer of being the first female to curate one of their mixes, and the resulting CD [Clubbers Guide to 2010, mixed alongside Axwell & Hook N Sling] went gold in the snap

www.sauce.net.au

of a glowstick. When international brands like Fendi, Prada, Louis Vuiton and Hugo Boss need music direction for their shows, whether in London, New York, Paris or Sydney, Anna can be found behind the decks looking as graceful as the models on the catwalk. Since getting her start on radio over 5 years ago, Anna has gone on to influence numerous fledgling DJs and steer clubbers towards breaking genres in the world of bassline & bashment sounds. At the end of 2010, Sydney magazine named her in their 100 most influencial people list, and she continues to host her popular radio slot on Tastemaker radio station FBi 94.5 each week. So what gives Anna the know how to make the movers and shakers well, move and shake? It could be her vast musical knowledge drawn from a childhood spent raiding CD bargain bins and listening to records with her bass player father. Or maybe it’s the tireless trawling through all music outlets she can find. Perhaps it’s her refined skill of reading the dance floor, and the knack of blending the most compelling underground tunes into seamless hours of musical power that leaves even the most mainstream crowds frothing at the bit. Or just maybe it’s simply because Anna radiates unparalleled amounts of fun while on stage, smiling and singing along to whatever is blasting from the speakers. Whatever it is, lucky for you she can be found at your favorite club on any given night, dancing hard and breaking hearts, one spin at a time.

Crusador

Still studying at college, the members of Crusador are starting early on a path to become professional musicians. Forming in 2009 at New Norfolk High School, Crusador is an aspiring 4 piece hard rock/ metal band. Starting out with covers to begin with and known only to a small local audience, clear in their dreams and ambitions they wrote their first originals, ‘Mortifier’ and ‘Adrenaline’ and competed in the 2009 Tasmanian Rock Challenge. Missing out on a placing at their first big performance made them even more determined to be heard.

Missing out on a placing at their first big performance made them even more determined to be heard. 2010 brought many opportunities with gigs at The Brisbane Hotel, Gig in the Gardens and various performances at youth centres and High Schools and more recently in January 2011, a gig with well known Tasmanian metal band, Taberah. With two different sounds, one being a modern and edgy rock and roll and the other being classic heavy metal, Crusador appeals to a wide range audience and with many different influences, new and old, their sound

is unique.

With a growing fan basis and a set list of originals, Crusador now hopes to achieve even more performance opportunities to show off their skill and unique sound.

In 2011, this young and energetic band have played numerous private functions, and have won a place to perform in the state final of the Global Battle Of The Bands band competition. Currently, they are considering an offer from within the music industry to manage the band’s affairs, with members of the music industry seeing great potential in these scruffy young lads.

Support Crusador Thursday 20th of October @ Republic Bar and Cafe in the Global Battle of the Bands State Final.

Northern.Original.music Blood, Sweat and Beers flow at Oakfest!!!

By Scott Webb

September proved to be another great month for local music in Launceston. There were some amazing nights! The Code Green Benefit gig which was held early in September was a complete success. More than 80 people turned up to support the worthy cause and, with bands like Wizard, The Phat Megz, The Stayns and Jack Storay, no wonder they turned up in their droves. Skinny Geans took its ever growing show down south which proved to be a hit, getting 108 people through the door was an amazing effort by the team! The Launceston show had its biggest turnout yet with more than 140 people turning and braving the cold! There were some wonderful acts both local and international. One band in particular which caught my eye was a ska band called The Phat Megz. These guys were amazing, it’s not often you see such an act like that around the local scene, but having so much energy on stage the crowd were definitely entertained! The Oak provided some great nights during the month, which included some local and mainland acts. Shaun Kirk made his way down and he was joined by the up-and-coming Luke Bennett. Luke has been playing around

the scene for quite a while now, playing mostly at Irish’s Top Shelf and Alchemy. Luke is one talented boy, so make sure you keep an eye out for when he is playing! We saw the return of Guthrie to the Oak stage and for their fans they did not disappoint! It was ‘Oakfest’ and it went off! There were 5 bands, 2 stages, and a very enthusiastic crowd! The night started with duo Mick and Katy, followed by Sun, then along came Boxmoney. The Cubas took the stage soon after, followed by the great Guthrie! A magical night of original music. Deligma made the trip down the road from Devonport to Hotel New York, where they were supported by Woof Woof and Future Recollection. Deligma’s journey has been a very successful one to date and it looks like it could take them to some very high places. With consistent radio plays on Triple J and mainland show offers, it won’t be long until they are regular names around the country. October is looking like another cracker of a month! Check out the local gig guide to find

out who and what is on. In the coming months, I will be profiling a few bands around the traps. Also, get down to your local cd store and check out what EP’s and albums are floating about, there have been some great releases in the last couple of months, so get your copy and support local music! Remember to keep checking out Triple J Unearthed as well, there is some great Tassie talent on there and with your help, you can help them maybe get a play on Triple J! All you have to do is rate or review a song. Bye bye for now,

DELIGMA peeps!

Sin & Tonics IN BATTLE

By Scott Webb

Since 2009, the Sin & Tonics have been entertaining audiences with their unique blend of country, garage, punk, rockabilly and fiery live stage performances. The three-piece band will be sure to deliver you good times with David ‘Eddo’ Edmonson on guitar & vocals, Eden ‘Blue’ Coulson on Double Bass & Vocals & Brett ‘Bert’ Pitfield on Drums. of the rest. What we don’t write, we write on the spot, and have been known to play a whole set of improv. See, talented mother f%$kers we are. How well do you all get along with each other? Like brothers. Only we don’t touch each other. Much. What was it like in the recording studio? The first album was made in the lounge room at Eddo’s place, so it was extremely warm & cozy. The 2nd one will be made in a big adult studio with a large ballpit & play equipment installed.

Goals for the next year? To be the best, toughest original entertainers in the land, and destroy everyone’s perception of what they think rockabilly is. Oh, and smash live shows every time. You can catch us at The Motorcycle expo for 2 days which should be a bit of fun, then heading up to Launceston to play for the Rock n Rodz weekend at Longford on the 2ndoctober, and also at The Royal Oak on Saturday 1st October. In amongst all that, recording our new album which will be due for a December release.

Have you had any interaction with the other GBOBA finalists? We don’t know the other bands. They are probably scared of our tattoos & our big double bass.

Where are you guys from? Hobart. I know – don’t hold that against us. How did you guys meet each other and form the band? We were mates before the band and needed some good music to listen too, so we made some. Have all been playing in bands for years realizing that sometimes the music can’t only be the thing that makes a band enjoyable. How would you describe your music, what are your influences? Our music is an adaption of western roots country music, punk, blues, rockabilly, psychobilly and no jazz (although some jazz chords are sometimes used). I guess it has no particular ‘genre’, so we just call it ‘Tasmaniabilly’. How do you go about song writing? Eddo writes guitar & most lyrics, then the fabulous rhythm brothers make sense of some www.sauce.net.au

What’s it mean to be in the final of GBOBA? Obviously we’re flattered to be a finalist, but it means so much when strangers come up & see us after a gig telling us that they are the mother of our children & that they enjoyed the show. What do you hope to get out of the GBOBA? Fame, fortune, exposure, crown jewels, a Ferrari and the price of bananas to go down. Oh, and a new cuckoo clock for Bert. Australia has never won the world finals, why do you think this is? Dunno, we’ll try and change that though. Maybe people don’t understand our accents, so we’ll use subtitles. That oughta win it for Oz. Most memorable thing you’ve seen backstage? Our 2 Go-Go girls laying down backstage nearly naked & panting realizing that we play faster live than on our recordings. And on any gig night, seeing 3 blokes down a stupid quantity of Gin & Tonic & Cascade Lager. Issue No. 139

Leigh Barker AND THE NEW SHEIKS

Double Bassist Leigh Barker is touring Australia this spring with his band ‘The New Sheiks’, featuring blues great Heather Stewart on vocals and violin. ‘The New Sheiks’ is one of the most enjoyable and entertaining groups in Australian Jazz today – this was proved when they won the ‘Australian Jazz Bell Award’ for ‘Best Traditional Jazz Album’ in May 2011. Their live show is a thoroughly fresh approach to traditional jazz, blues and swing featuring some of the country’s greatest improvisers. Tough-as-nails blues, stompin’ swing and brash, old-school jazz are all in the mix. Debonair and sassy – ‘The New Sheiks’ are not to be missed. Leigh Barker has toured Australia extensively, usually with a quintet. In 2010 he toured the country as support act for jazz superstar Branford Marsalis, which culminated in Leigh performing encores with Branford at the Sydney Opera House and Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. Since 2009, Leigh has called this group ‘The New Sheiks’, referencing a trio formed in 2005 that trumpeter Eamon McNelis affectionately titled ‘The Sheiks’. It is also a reference to the 1930’s blues band the ‘Mississippi Sheiks’ (who themselves were referencing the song ‘The Sheik of Araby’ - ‘Sheik’ is 1920’s slang for a debonair ladies man). The Blue Mosquitoes AROUND THE WORLD IN 90 DAYS

Three months ago they packed their bags, said goodbye and flew off into the sunset. Twenty-four shows, five countries, too many pints of guiness and one European summer later, The Blue Mosquitoes are back! From the first performance of their UK/Ireland Paper Boats tour, The Blue Mosquitoes made an impression, captivating audiences with their celtic inspired original music. ‘The lead singer and violinist Hannah Foley actually made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up,’ says Dan Fletcher, UK music reviewer. .‘ ..They are definitely a band to watch out for in the future!’ The band went on to play sold-out shows, with performaces such as The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Mayo Summer Music Series 2011, held at a venue seating over two-hundred people. Lead Singer, Hannah Foley says the highlight of the tour for her was Clovelly Maritime Festival. ‘We were performing on an outdoor stage beside a boat shed upon cobblestones. It overlooked the Atlantic Ocean. It is not often that a musician can perform with such an inspiring view. Hannah (19) on lead vocals and violin, her brother Stuart Foley (15) on guitair and mandolin, cousin Chris Boon (19) on guitar, and Christopher Coleman (23) on bass, travelled through the United Kingdom and Southern Ireland promoting their debut album, Paper Boats. Lindsey Meldrum (20) joined them for the tour, along with the band’s co-managers Hayden Foley and Lauren Boon. ‘There were eight of us travelling in the one van for most of the tour,’ Hannah says ‘so it was a bit of a crowded house, and definately a family affair.’ The Blue Mosquitoes were assisted by Arts Tasmania in the travel costs of the tour. ‘There is an amazing support network for Tasmanian artists, with Arts Tasmania right in the middle of it. It is something that more artists need to become aware of, and tap into,’ says Hannah. The Blue Mosqitoes Homecoming Show takes place at The Republic Bar & Cafe, on Sunday the 23rd of October at 8:30pm sharp. They share the night with very special guests, One Sick Lullabye and Desi-boy.

Chris Coleman HE’S bAAAAACK! Christopher Coleman has returned to his island home once more. On the 9th of October, on a late Sunday afternoon at the Brookfield in Margate, he will be armed fresh with this spring’s red wattle, along with his new songs and poems written whilst supporting The Blue Mosquitoes on their twenty four date tour across the UK and Ireland. One of the busiest of the ‘unemployed’, Christopher has collaborated and toured with established national acts such as Jinja Safari, The Blue Mosquitoes, Rosie Burgess Band, Adam Cousens Band, Ben Wells & The Middle Names, as well as being the driving creative force behind Hobart love/rock/soul band favourites, HANNAH and an equal quarter of The Colemans, a multi generational family band of singer-songwriters. He will wrap up his “world” tour with his final show for 2011 at the Brookfield, Margate. Sharing the stage with good friend and fellow international troubadour, Daniel Champagne, a guitar virtuoso from Bega, NSW, they team up to deliver songs, poems, ‘jams’ and stories from on the road. @ Brookfield, Margate, 5PM, Sunday, 9th October

Lachlan Bryan FROM NASHVILLE TO HOBART Songwriter and story-teller Lachlan Bryan will visit six of our eight states and territories this October, November and December for a series of intimate live shows. The tour will follow a short visit to Nashville for the 2011 American Music Association (AMA) Festival. Lachlan (best known as front man of Melbourne alt-country darlings The Wildes) has recently finished recording his debut solo album, to be released by Core Music through Sony Music Australia early next year. The album features guest appearances from Bill and Kasey Chambers, as well as Catherine Britt - who lends backing vocals to current single Fly By Night. Lachlan’s live performances have won The Wildes a cult following of devotees over the past two years. The songs are often interweaved between rambling, comical stories and observations - and this particular tour will feature selections from both the new album and The Wildes’ catalogue. Album Reviews NINE TYPES OF LIGHT TV ON THE RADIO

CHAD VANGAALEN DIAPER ISLAND

SKIPPING GIRL VINEGAR KEEP CALM CARRY THE MONKEY

LLOYD SPIELGEL TANGLED BLUE

This is the fourth album from TV On The Radio. Sadly the bass player, Gerald Smith died of lung cancer shortly after the album was released, he was 34 years of age. Perhaps inspired by Joy Division, whose first show after the death of front man Ian Curtis was an instrumental performance in darkness with a spotlight on the space the singer would have been, TVOTR performed the track “Will Do” without any bass at a recent live performance. “Second Song” ironically is the first song on this album and it has more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel, is it Nice Inch Nails industrial rock, is it a top 40 dance tune with a catchy falsetto chorus. Brass and country and western tinges also dominate the sonic landscape in this track. The third album, ‘Dear Science’ was the album that made the industry stand up and take notice, and this release, while a little over the top with its bass-heavy electro and complex rhythms, there are some great tracks, ‘No Future Shock”, “Forgotten” and “Caffeinated Consciousness” being the obvious stand outs. Elsewhere ‘Killer Crane’ incorporates the ooh ooh ooh chorus of ‘O Superman’ and subtly underlying a folk riff with unexpected strings. ‘TV On The Radio’ is a diverse album that just when you think you have it pigeon holed, takes you in a different direction from what you were expecting. The album is recorded in Brooklyn and mastered in New York. The musicianship is extraordinarily good.

Another release from the coolest indie label of all time, Sub Pop and it does not get any cooler than the third album from this Canadian based artist, so talented in fact that I am prepared to forgive them for Celine Dion. His previous efforts were less rock and more melodic. The production values on past releases were more cluttered and flat in comparison. The artist himself took time out from recording to produce Woman’s album, “Public Strain.” He attributes the opportunity to experiment with another artist’s work, as liberating and inspiring. Worth commenting on is the hand drawn album cover, Vangaalen is as well known as an illustrator and animator, as he is a musician, having created animated music videos for J Mascis and Guster. “Freedom For A Policeman” is like early Stooges, with a relentless nilistic guitar riff that is strangely somewhere between Joy Division and early Talking Heads. Diaper Island is at times inspired by 1966-68 experimental Beach Boys and also Simon and Garfunkel in a warped and twisted kind of way. Instrumentation and harmonies at could draw comparisons with a slacker Fleet Foxes and Low Anthem, only far more comedic and cooler. “Wandering Spirit” is parodies the lyrics and the tune of The Beatles “Nowhere Man.” With a hokey album title and lyrics like “maybe if I shave my pussy you would love me because I am lovely” let’s hope this amazing music is finds the audience it no doubt deserves.

The ‘difficult’ second album and follow up to critically acclaimed debut album “Sift The Noise”, the release that established Skipping Girl Vinegar as darlings of the Melbourne indie scene. Mark Lang, the singer and songwriter is a diverse and ambitious songwriter, and this album definitely breaks new ground artistically. This music is intense and at 33 minutes in length, the experience while an interesting and substantial journey often leaves the listener uncomfortable and uncertain, despite the melodic songs and wistful tunes, these songs are very dark and haunting. “Keep Calm, Carry The Monkey” has an interesting history. The band raised $22,000 by asking fans to contribute money through their Hobo Philanthropy initiative. Each of the fans that contributed earn a place on the album’s “Hall of Fame” page. The finished product was mastered in Nashville and perhaps ironically sounds like a DIY effort. Having said that the Nashville elements come through strongly in the country tinged “Central Station” and “Hell Out of Town.” However no expense however was spared for the artwork, when viewed in it’s entirety, with its Autumn colours, brail textures, cut outs and embossed files, it is possibly the greatest cover of the CD age. The only problem is having dismantled it removed the cd I have no idea how to re-assemble it, still a small price to pay for being self indulgent and arty.

Acoustic blues artist, Lloyd Spiegel’s eighth album, jam packed with hard hitting, innovative grooves and instrumentation. “Tangled Blue” is the follow up to the more sparse “Timber and Steel” and has spent a phenomenal six months at the top of the blues and roots charts in Australia. Touring extensively, including some recent captivating hard hitting shows at the Royal Oak and The Republic, Spiegel has been probably best known for his guitar skills and expertise. Having shared the stage with Buddy Guy, Etta James, Peter Frampton, Willie Nelson and Ray Charles Spiegel has carved out a niche for himself in Japan and the United States, where he lectures, teaches and mentors young performers in the traditions of the Blues. The new album is notable for the percussion work of Malaysian artist, Arunachala which add a world music dimension to the genre. “Blade” and “The Man That I was” introduces strings into the mix and feature players from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. These songs are a genuine highlight and show Spiegel to be an exception writer and story teller. “Dirt Road To Paradise” borrows the chords from John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero” while elsewhere songs like “Won’t Turn Back” mirror “Blood On The Tracks” era Bob Dylan. Spiegel is an ambassador for Cole Clarke guitars and utilizes modern technology in his playing, the sounds generated in “Medicine” in particular showcase this aspect of his playing to it’s fullest and his ability to mimic players of the caliber of Eric Clapton, Robert Cray and Robert Johnson

PROPELLER VERSUS WINGS ZOEY VAN GOEY

DIG CAVE DIG A TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF NICK CAVE

Forming in Glasgow and consisting of members from Canada, Ireland and England, this is their second album and follow up to 2009’s “The Cage Was Unlocked All Along.” Famous fans include Belle and Sebastian and Lou Reed. These seemingly disparate fans make sense in a way as the music contained here borrows from so many different styles. Few bands other than Yo La Tengo and The Magnetic Fields make music this oddball and quirky. “Sackville Sun” with it’s reference to buying eight track cartridges and unexpected prog-rock keyboard solo suggests this is a fun band with a sense of humor. Lead singer Kim Moore has a voice somewhere between Deborah Harry and Dolores O’Reirdan. Moore has a charming, exquisite, sparkling presence that is at all times delightful and adorable. On the closing track, a more atmospheric serious introspective song, she is exquisite. Confusingly there is a second vocalist who to my musical is an awkward Phil Oakley impersonator with a Canadian accent sound like he belongs in an entirely different band, yet “The Cake and Eating It” on which he features on is the first single so go figure. “You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate” features that same male singer and it’s a great slacker anthem and the most confident song in this collection, reminiscent of Campervan Beethoven’s “Take The Skinheads Bowling.” The very strange Quentin Blake inspired album cover was a commissioned work by Ursula Cheng that beautifully compliments this delightful recording

Tribute albums have been a dime a dozen in the last decade, often cynically put together by record labels cashing in on the success of an established artist many years past their prime. Some of the early tribute albums dedicated to writers of the caliber of Bacharach and Cohen were magnificent, but before you knew it every man and his dog had a tribute album, when Duran Duran and Elton John have one, the genre is on very shaky ground indeed. The ones that work tend to feature artists who are great songwriters. Attracting big name artists to cover the songs is not always a guarantee for success, in this case the list of contributors read like a who’s who of the Melbourne music scene which lends this collection a genuine coherency (albeit with at least one former Idol contestant along for the ride). ‘Dig Cave Dig’ has been lovingly and painstakingly put together. This release could never live up to the high expectations of Cave’s die hard fans but it will trigger fascinating debates about its artistic merits in the pub. In one instance, Vasco Era’s ‘Dig Lazarus Dig’ comes close to topping the original. Your Animal are probably the one group taking a major risk with a stripped back minimalist version of ‘Weeping Song’ with a female vocalist putting a very fresh spin on one of Cave’s greatest songs. My only criticism of this compilation is that I would have thought the Birthday Party warranted a tribute in their own right.

RUMER SEASONS OF MY SOUL Born in Pakistan British based Rummer, Sarah to her mum comes across on this, her debut album as the reincarnation of Karen Carpenter. Other stated influences include Joni Mitchell, Judy Garland and Dionne Warwick. Her unusual stage name is borrowed from author Rumer Godden, the writer responsible for the novels (of if you are not so well read, the films), ‘Green Gage Summer’ and ‘Black Narcissus.’ Burt Bacharach is a fan, having invited her to his house to sing, after hearing an earlier EP she had recorded of his songs, in fact his current lyricist is her co-writer on the original songs on this release. For those of you who are still awake, this very mainstream album reached number three in the UK charts and was nominated for two Brit Awards. If you think you might be moved hearing Rumer sing Bacharach’s ‘What The World Needs Now’ on a TV show like ‘Dancing On Ice’ while Torville and Dean swan about a bit in the background then chances are you’re the type of person that might buy this lovely album for their mum. Just as dinosaurs are thin one end, thick in the middle and thin at the other album this album delivers on the hype at the start, suffers an excruciating boring lull in the middle then finishes strongly but awkwardly with a few obvious covers, the standout being David Gate’s ‘Gooodbye Girl’ which I have to concede it is a beautiful version of that song. Central Energy 2011 Central Energy 2011 is a 3-cd set of the harder styles in dance music from Australia’s longest running dance compilation series. Alex Kidd’s Kiddfectious Mix is pure Hard NRG. The CD is seamlessly intermingled, despite the stop & start nature of the genre. Alex Kidd has used the mix album to plug many of his own tracks in with the other big names such as Blutonium Boy, Bioweapon & Showteck. With a list of featured artists such as these you’d expect more from this CD, but sadly much of the track selected is lacking. With an amazing lack of musicality in most of the mix & some limp drops compared to the possibilities available within the genre, this CD seems to be conforming to a stereotype that has turned many people away from Hard NRG. Anne Savage’s CD is a beautifully blended sequence of solid hard styles, from Hard House through to NRG. With intense builds & grand ambient breakdowns this mix shows much more of the musical side of things. The track selection has a heavy Euro feel featuring many of this UK DJs own mixes along with other artists such as Organ Donors, Shockforce & Luca Antolini. The third CD of the compilation is a Hard Trance mixed by XDream. The set contains a whole lot of fat bouncing beats & melodious breakdowns as well as aggressive synths & fun vocal hits. Overall the mixing throughout stands above most compilations out there. Tasty long progressions and strong builds through each set make this a compilation set for music fans who don’t just want a list of slightly-conjoined tracks of the latest tunes out there. The variety between different hard dance styles also stands out, with many of the different flavours of the genre included within. Mr. B. 7/10

Mofo / TSO SIDESHOW , pw1, 23/9/11

Hobart’s waterfront-shed-come-concert-hall, PW1, was filled to the brim on Friday September 23, when a mashup audience of 1500 hit the MOFO / TSO Sideshow in Princes Wharf One. The pearls arrived early, the piercings were still streaming through the door when Acumen took to the stage. The highlights of their set were VJ Sloth’s lush visuals and the final track spun by DJ Dameza, a Scientists of Modern Music remix of the TSO. Dean Stevenson and ten-piece string ensemble the Arco Set got a little kid up and shaking his booty in the front row, but it wasn’t until the 50-strong Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra took to the stage that the sweat really started to fly. The crowd got a kick out of the Imperial March from Star Wars, and when Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the TSO, led the orchestra through a shirt-soaking rendition of Beethoven’s 5th the mood in the shed turned electric. There were cheers throughout and, at the end of the final movement, blue-rinse TSO stalwarts, art-school hipsters, the MONA man himself, David Walsh (in a very Sargent Pepper jacket) and clusters of talking-texting schoolgirls moved as one,all getting to their feet to give the TSO a stomping ovation. The shed well and truly got its buzz on – and judging by the expressions on the faces of members of the orchestra as they left the stage, this won’t be the last time MOFO and the TSO collaborate.

cinema review: Abduction Subheading Abduction Starring : Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver Directed by : John Singleton The word ‘vehicle’ has a couple of meanings. The one the word is more often used in the context of is this one : any means in or by which someone travels or something is carried or conveyed; a means of conveyance or transport: a motor vehicle; space vehicles. But it can also mean : a carrier, as of infection. Abduction, a new teenage actionthriller(giggle) that wants to be its target market’s Bourne Identity (but comes across as more Agent Cody Banks), meshes both meanings. You see, though Twilight alum Taylor Lautner does ‘carry’ and ‘convey’ (with one blank expression) his new vehicle,

www.sauce.net.au

there’s no doubting the vanilla-thrilla will leave film lovers feeling ill. Yes, it’s an infectiously nauseating bit of fluff that’s spitting up banal, laughable phlegm the moment the title card dissolves into visual. To be fair, this movie isn’t for me. It’s also not for you. And it’s also not for the 15-year-old teenage girl with good taste - it’s for the Twilight fan, or rather, the randy young lasses who get their just delights through the all-ages chick porn that is a Taylor Lautner (who plays Jacob Black, the shirtless werewolf, in the Twilight movies) vehicle. As anyone who saw Twilight and it’s two sequels would be aware, the main thing Taylor Lautner’s got going for him is his abs. There’s some acting ability in there, but at the moment, his abs take centre stage. It goes without saying then that if you’re heading to Abduction to see a classy Bourne Identity-like thriller (directed by the chap who gave us 2 Fast 2 Furious!? Yeah, rigggght..) with Lautner giving his best Matt Damon Jr you’ll leave sorely disappointed; if however you’re coming to see a teenager with his shirt off, mouthing some of the most banal, wooden dialogue since the episode of Full House when Michelle pooped her first nappy , and acting like he’s playing John McClane in an end-of-year high-school stage production of Die Hard, bring a spare pair of underwear. Squee.

The heard and seen-it-all-before plot (River Phoenix did it better in Little Nikita; there was even a Jason Bateman-starring telemovie released in the ‘80s, Moving Target, that tackled the terrain more successfully - and again, that was telemovie featuring the less-popular Teen Wolf!) sees Jacob Nathan (Lautner), a high schooler and wrestler, discovering the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website. Next thing he knows, the inexplicably smart and skilled Nathan - along with neighbour, Karen (Lily Collins) - finds himself on the run from both the authorities and some international crooks, because, of course, he doesn’t know which side to trust. If it were 1992, and this was John Singleton’s follow-up to the brilliant urban drama Boyz N’The Hood (1991), then one would expect much more from Abduction. But since Singleton has pretty much retired from making classy, meaningful movies and now solely works as a gun-for-hire on studio fluff ,most film buffs will know to keep away from this anyway. But then there is the support cast Sigourney Weaver! Jason Isaacs! Maria Bello! Alfred Molina! All terrific actors, and unlike Singleton, they’re still making quality movies - for the most part. Don’t be fooled by their presence though, if anything, Abduction simply proves that even classy artistes like money as much as the rest of us do (and who can blame them, especially when, in the case of Weaver, you’re likely paid a suitcase of gold ingots for a couple of shots of you escorting the film’s shirtless hero behind some balloons, sprouting some hideous dialogue that near single-handedly dints the fine reputation). Sad to see Ellen Ripley swallowed whole by the extra terrestrial shit monster though. If you spot a quote on the poster for Abduction that reads something like ‘This Year’s Bourne Identity’, you’ll know Lionsgate have added the controversially unseen critic David Manning to the payroll.

CINEMA REVIEW; God Bless Ozzy Osbourne ((DOCO) Starring : Ozzy Osbourne, Jack Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne, Aimee Osbourne, Kelly Osbourne, Sir Paul McCartney, Tommy Lee, Henry Rollins Directed by : Mike Fleiss, Mike Piscitelli If you felt you didn’t quite get to know the man as well as you’d hoped to in the umpteen years that “The Osbournes” ran for - yes that’s sarcasm; you likely know just how many times a day Ozzy goes to the loo after that small-screen dousing - Directors Mike Fleiss and Mike Piscitelli offer bonus insight into the man and his rockin’ past and present in this entertaining, but mostly touching, documentary. The film, which though funny (like the MTV series that followed the Osbourne family around on their daily adventures) is more cameralens to open-wound, weaves interviews with Osbourne’s family (Sharon, Kelly, Jack - also a producer on the film) and friends, including rockers Henry Rollins and Tommy Lee, with footage of the man on stage (back in the Black Sabbath days and recent stuff from his latest tour). Mostly though, it’s a sit down with the man himself who, appreciably, opens up about his sordid past (namely the drugs and alcohol) and how he mistreated his family at times. Osbourne’s children from his previous marriage, Jessica and Louis, also appear on camera testifying to the rocker’s inability to be the dad they needed them to be when they were younger. Though there’s not a lot in here about the prince of darkness’s self-confessed infidelity or any recent troubles at home, there’s still a lot of opening-up going on here - particularly in terms of Osbourne’s shameful past and his struggles as a penniless child. Obviously the movie is going to mostly appeal to fans of Osbourne and Black Sabbath, and if only because so much of it is watching the man do his thing on stage, but even occasional viewers of “The Osbournes” and the odd “No More Tears” fan should find it an easily endurable and welcomingly informative alternative to the 3D fluff showing in the cinema next door.

Pilgrim.Coffee For the pilgrim who just wants coffee... By Rachel Shea

If you’ve journeyed from afar and are craving hot and tantalising beverages, then you should make your next stop Pilgrim Coffee. Or if you’re just looking for something new, refreshing and back in business, Pilgrim Coffee is the place to go. Re-opened next to Dumpling World, on Argyle St, Pilgrim Coffee welcomes the weary traveller…

Name of Establishment: Pilgrim Coffee Address: 48 Argyle Street, Hobart, 7000 Phone: (03) 6234 1999 Opening hours: Monday to Friday – 6.30AM – 4.45PM Style of Cuisine: Café Time and date of review: September 14, 2011, 1.30PM Rating out of 10: Food and Beverages: 7 Atmosphere: 6.5 Service: 8

From the moment you walk through the front doors to the time you leave, Pilgrim Coffee will cater to the needs of the tired wanderer. The open lit and spacious entrance invites you to escape the busyness of Argyle Street and watch the world as it passes by. Although not in the ideal location for the busy commuter, Pilgrim Coffee is situated opposite the Royal Hobart Hospital giving easy to access for emergency service workers. Pilgrim Coffee accommodates for all tastes with hot chocolate, coffee, delicious cakes and toasted sandwiches available. Inside is warm for those chilly spring days, but there is alfresco dining for when the sun comes out. The busyness of Argyle Street may put a dampener on the peacefulness that every café needs, but the warm and sociable service at Pilgrim Coffee makes this experience truly enjoyable. The mismatched brightly coloured modernday walls that line the entrance to Pilgrim Coffee are complimented by the aged sandstone bricks that face the kitchenette and wrap themselves around the back of the café. The sandstone finish mixed with the contemporary brickwork works in interesting ways with the futuristic globe-shaped light bulbs that fall gracefully from above. Past, present and future are brought together by the unusual combination of shapes, patterns, colours and textures that decorate the café. Whether you are a traveller visiting from

the outback, the inner city or outer space there’s something for everyone at Pilgrim Coffee. The kitchenette, unlike many coffee shops, does not alienate the wandering visitor. It runs nearly full length of the café, partitioned from the dining area by adjacent bench tops. Everything has a place in the small area: coffee machine, bay-marie, cash-register and work space. You can see everything that happens behind the counter, so you know that your coffee is receiving the very best attention. For your convenience, while you are waiting for your coffee you can read any of a selected number of popular magazines and the day’s newspaper. While there is an unfinished feeling to Pilgrim Coffee, there is indeed a finished feeling

to their delicious coffee and well thought out ‘quick bite to eat’ menu. For me, the Pilgrim Coffee experience was a good one. I found myself staring into space and forgetting the problems of the world. The distance to the café may be an expedition in itself, but the friendly staff and yummy coffee welcome in the exhausted nomad and makes the journey worth it. While the journey for the new and improved Pilgrim Coffee is just beginning, this café is the first of many stops for the weary traveller…

Stella Artois Lager

Angove 2011 Butterfly Ridge Riesling Gewurztraminer

If you are searching for an everyday red wine that won’t break the bank, you need look no further. You really can’t beat this blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvedre from one of McLaren Vale’s most reliable family-owned wine labels. Made largely from fruit from gnarly old bush vines that have been in the Osborn family for generations, it is a lively, spicy little rock’n’roll number made in the same style as some of its far more expensive d’Arenberg stablemates. Value with a big V.

Pop into any bottle store or bar and you’ll find a range of beers from around the world; Japan, Mexico, the US, you name a country and its beer will probably be on sale somewhere in Hobart or Launceston. This Belgian beer is one of the original imports (it comes from Belgium) and is a long-time favourite among serious lager drinkers. It offers a lighter, fresher style of lager with some nice tangy malt bitterness on the palate. It’s a refreshing beer that is versatile with food or simply good for quaffing after a hard day at the salt mines. FYI, Stella means star and the Artois family were the original brewers.

This may be an unfashionable blend of two white grapes, but the end result is pretty impressive given the price tag. This is quite a floral wine with some attractive citrus and peach notes, hints of Turkish Delight, fresh lime and lychees, along with some tropical fruit sweetness on the palate. The Angove family has been making wines since 1886 and that experience may be why they’ve produced such a good wine from a difficult vintage. Enjoy with seafood on a warm day.

Game.Review Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, PS3, X360)

By Seth van Heyster

It’s been a long time between drinks but the third instalment of the critically acclaimed Deus Ex series has finally arrived. Eidos Montreal has crafted an immersive near future Earth in which to enjoy this rich blend of role-playing and first-person shooting. Since the first game the Deus Ex series has married these two gameplay elements with ambitious sci-fi storytelling and this formula remains the foundation on which this prequel is built

Human Revolution thrusts you into the augmented boots of Adam Jensen as he attempts to uncover the mystery behind a devastating attack on Sarif Industries, the leading human augmentation technology corporation in the world. Before long Jensen starts to unravel a tangled web of corporate espionage, lies, and deceit that hint at a shadowy conspiracy. It’s a well-crafted narrative and as you take on various missions, side quests and explore hub worlds you will find yourself engrossed in this 2027 version of Earth. As a prequel, Human Revolution rewinds the clock and eschews the nanotech future of the earlier titles in favour of a world where biomechanical augmentations are foremost in the minds of scientists and politicians. The art direction in Human Revolution is spectacular; with an omnipresent black and gold aesthetic contributing to the moody atmosphere. The ominous, electro soundtrack compliments the visual design perfectly and will keep you on the edge of your seat. This all comes together to create an incredibly detailed, dark, and sinister world that feels as though it could descend

into chaos at any moment. It’s a world where individuals wield more power than entire nations and shady corporations deal in even shadier business behind closed doors. Eidos Montreal nailed their vision of a living, breathing sci-fi world – the result: decisions seem weightier, successes more rewarding, and failures more terrifying. Choice is one of the key elements of Human Revolution and it extends to every aspect of the game. Dialogue choices, story choices and gameplay choices all serve to make this a very personal experience. At first glance Human Revolution may seem like a cover based firstperson shooter, but as you earn experience you’ll gain the ability to upgrade Jensen’s various augmentations. This gives you myriad ways to approach any given situation. For example, I decided to turn my Jensen into a silent killing machine, focussing on stealth, hacking, and using quiet weapons like the crossbow. Choose your augmentations wisely and within no time you’ll be leaping off a three storey building into the middle of a gang of thugs and executing them with visceral takedowns before they have

even reacted. The controls feel fluid and sharp, and it’s very satisfying to put all your carefully chosen augmentations to use. It is also possible to go through almost the entire game without killing anyone, using only non-lethal weapons and silently knocking out opponents from behind. Unfortunately there are some underwhelming boss fights that force Jensen to kill, and these moments feel slightly out of place. The load times are also on the long side and some of the characters sport awkward animations, but these are minor gripes and hardly detract from the experience. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the finest and most original role-playing titles in quite some time. Upgrading my many augmentations, sneaking past mercenaries, and executing violent takedowns is some of the most fun I’ve had all year. Not to mention the noir sci-fi setting and shady characters that drive the intriguing story. If you can’t get enough of role-playing games or science fiction, or if you just want to be a badass and punch through walls, then you need to play Human Revolution.

Graphics 4/5 Stunning art direction creates a vivid world to explore, although some of those character models are pretty jarring. Sound 4/5 A great soundtrack and good voice acting keep you immersed in this dark, near future world. Gameplay 5/5 A concoction of role-playing, stealth, shooting, and exploration brewed to perfection and distilled into a tonic that is sure to cure your winter gaming blues. Replay Value 5/5 If there weren’t so many amazing games coming out in the next few months you could still be playing this next year. OVERALL 5/5

Facebook SUED OVER TRACKING USERS AFTER LOGOUT IS THIS THE BEGINNING OF THE END? Has Facebook just committed a fatal error, a seemingly-small action that will, ultimately, lead to the empire’s demise? Maybe. Certainly, FB is alienating its users. Recent and ongoing changes to the end-users’ experience has angered many and now there have been revelations that the social media monolith has been tracking people after they have logged out. This is sure to turn off many of the youthful demographic that makes up much of FB’s user base. And, now there are revelations that the corporate giant has been employing new, automatic “frictionless sharing.” The tracking, done with cookies on users’ computers, has prompted criticism from lawmakers and now a lawsuit, while privacy groups and regulators in Ireland are concerned about a new sharing feature that automatically posts user activities to news feeds without users intentionally doing so. www.sauce.net.au

A blogger wrote last weekend (nikcub. appspot.com/logging-out-of-facebook-isnot-enough) that he discovered that his Web surfing was being tracked by Facebook even after he logged out. Facebook admitted that it personalizes content by putting cookie files on user computers that remain even when users are logged out, but told CNET (http://news.cnet. com/8301-27080_3-20113101-245/lawmakersseek-ftc-probe-of-facebook-post-log-outtracking/) earlier this week that it quickly acted to remove uniquely identifying data from postlogout cookies and that it did not store or use that cookie data for tracking.

the defendant’s attention a year ago,” according to the complaint filed in federal court in San Jose, Calif., and reported on by Bloomberg. The lawsuit was filed by Perrin Aikens Davis of Illinois and it seeks class-action status. It seeks unspecified damages and ask the court to block the tracking based on alleged violations of federal wiretapping, computer fraud, and abuse laws, according to the report.

“This admission came only after an Australian technology blogger exposed Facebook’s practice of monitoring members who have logged out, although he brought the problems to

Also today, the Irish data protection commissioner plans to investigate Facebook’s privacy-related activities following complaints by privacy groups in Europe and the U.S.,

“We believe this complaint is without merit and we will fight it vigorously,” Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes told CNET in an e-mailed statement.

according to a Reuters report. It’s been a rough week for the company. Yesterday, a collection of advocacy groups asked the Federal Trade Commission to ban Facebook’s “frictionless sharing” and new Timeline features announced at F8 last week. On Wednesday, two U.S. congressmen asked the FTC to investigate Facebook over the post logout cookies. And a Chicago company has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Facebook over the Timeline feature.

Surf: north island sharks South Arm has seen several short sharp swells that at their peak resulted in fun waves around Wedge and further along the peninsula. Saturday surfers made the most of the long awaited increase in swell size to score 3-4ft peaks at Wesdge and was surfed relativley uncrowded, despite light onshore winds. The swell dropped as quickly as it came and a residual 2-3ft was on offer Sunday along exposed beaches of North Clifton and Goats. The swell kicked agaoin Wednesday Alex Zawadski back from a fractured leg was seen amongst the small numbers of lucky surfers to score Wedge 3-5ft before the wind came in strong easterly throughout the afternoon. The East Coast has also had a reasonable run with a surpirse 3ft NE early in the week. By Friday it was getting 2-3ft rements of both a NE and Southerly

Check swellnet.com.au for the photo feature. Park beach’s Hamish Duncan and Clifton’s Tabbi Fasnacht both returned recently from U/14 National Development camps. Local coach Dustin Hollick assisted coaching with National coach Martin Dunn and Gary Cruikshank at the boys camp.

The girls were stoked to be coached by former WCT Chelsea Hedges as well as meet Layne Beachley, MR and current world Junior Champion Jack Freestone. During both camps the surfers experienced a close encounter with a local shark cruising the beach for schools of baitfish. Hamish almost duck dived into one during one afternoon on the camp. Tabbi and a group of girls she was surfing with were startled by a shark which they first thought was a dolphin and initially paddled towards it. Then as they

realised, it came towards them before darting away. Leaving the girls with a nervous paddle back to shore against a rip. While coaches pointed out it wasn’t a very large shark and that all surfers did the right thing and returned to shore its not uncommon on the NSW North coast and SE Queensland for surfers to regualrly see sharks in close proximity. At this time of year the seas off Cabarita and the Byron area are teeming with all types of sea life.

Sk8 Wrap: GIRL PUTS MAP OF TASSIE ON DVD The new dvd from Girl (the company not the gender) skateboards called “Out Backwards” has just hit the shelves. It is a documentation of their 2010 tour through NewZealand and Australia and has a stack of Tassie footage on it that is definitly worth checking out and who knows you might get some bgps (background props). A new longboard skatemag has came out of Australia called Heelside, and features some articles from tasssies own Bobby Godfrey (yeh i didnt think he could read and write either) I mentioned last issue that Royal Park in Launceston was getting an upgrade. Well it should be finished by the time you read this, see pics. And yes, that is brand new concrete that has already been vandalised heavily. It features an awesome manual pad/ grind box, four different hubba ledges, couple of euro gaps, a rail or two, some banks and a gnarly bank to vert wall. There was an opening/bbq there put on by Jimmys skate and street and there will be a full wrap up on that next issue.

Hello Noise local youth bloggers just because ... IHello Noise is a blog that allows young people to write about topics and stories that they’re passionate about in an online and shareable format. Featuring a team of 10 young contributors aged between 10 and 20, Hello Noise is a place for young people to share freely and passionately about stuff that really needs to be said. It’s a chance for young people to have a voice, not ‘a voice’. I don’t decide the topics for them, instead we meet as a team and talk about what’s important to us. Then we write. We’re not writing about topics because they’re popular or purposely alternative, or because teachers have set the task. We’re blogging about issues that we feel strongly about, issues that our effecting our friends, families and the world we live in.

Hello Noise has just launched on Monday 13th of June with over 450 individual views on it’s first day. New blog posts are being added everyday on a wide variety of topics and issues.

We’re not blogging to be cool, We’re blogging because we want to change perceptions, culture and how our world works.

People can get involved in the project by suggesting topics, sending in their own or just getting involved on Facebook or Twitter.

The project is a venture of my business Hespii Social Media Consultancy as I believe strongly in the project. It’s something I’ve wanted to see happen for a long time as I found my passion for social media from blogging myself and I want to see other young people discover their passions and talents too.

We also have positions available for youth to join the team as we want to see it grow and grow. e. dylan@hespii.com.au w. www.hespii.com.au p. 0408 104 762

HealtH WHAT IS WELLNESS, REALLY? BY SHARON MELIOS, WELLNESS COACH Being well, is it a choice? Is it in your control? It seems that many are not taking the first step to good health by being personally responsible for the choices they make on a daily basis. You can’t change acknowledge.

what

you

do

not

Do you wake up ready to tackle the day ahead with anticipation and energy or do you struggle to get up hitting that snooze button? So what is wellness really? In my opinion, it can be summarised in three words: Mind, Body & Spirit. Let’s break that down: MIND! What you think dictates the action you take which in turn dictates the results you receive? What are you thinking about right now? Manage your MIND for example when you forget something: by saying “I am BRILLIANT” rather than “I’m so stupid”. Would you let anyone else call you stupid? Mindful meditation is powerful, meditation does not have to be complicated it can be as simple as sitting on the floor in a comfortable position with no distractions, silence for 5mins can quieten the mind considerably. Creating a vacuum with you mind, mentally place all the negative thoughts you have in a jar, seal the jar, never to be opened, you now have room for good thoughts to enter.

Philosopher Mr Jim Rohn said so wisely: Take good care of your body, it’s the ONLY place you have to live. What you fuel your body with is vital to optimal wellness. What are you putting in? If you put nonsense in, you feel unwell, lack energy, irritable and therefore not as productive. How you start your day generally dictates the remainder of the day, so in short don’t skip breakfast. Many of my clients find a breakfast that has a reasonable amount of healthy lean animal or plant protein sustains their hunger for up to 4hrs. Spirit, one of many definitions: The essential nature of a person or group. So, how’s your Spirit these days? When was the last time you said thank you, I appreciate you? That piece of rubbish, did you pick it up? That person struggling with their keys, shopping and children, did you offer a hand? Spirit in my definition is when you go outside of yourself for another; having a true HUMAN spirit contributes to your wellness. When you feel at your best, you do great things; you are a positive person to be around. On the same hand, if you feel unwell, mentally exhausted your actions and results are as such!

Clubhouse Review Hobart was treated to one of the countries most sought after performers on Friday, the 23rd of September, when Sam Simmons headlined The Clubhouseís second ever show at The Waratah Hotel. And Sam did not fail to impress.

Through a barrage of absurdist sound clips and surreal drawings, Simmons delivered a riotous set to a sold-out crowd packed into The Waratah Bandroom. Simmons has had to battle critics who dismiss his comedy as being prop-driven and ìjust purely randomî, but it is these critics who are, ironically, being far too close minded to truly examine the nature of the show that Simmons presents. Simmonsí show is not prop-driven because the humour doesnít come from the prop. When critics say, ìbut anyone could do that,î they couldnít be further from the truth. Everything that Simmons did onstage at The Clubhouse was done for a calculated reason, and to devastating result. Closing with a finale in which he consumed the contents of an Old El Paso Taco Kit and smashed the taco shells onto his shirt-less chest in time to beat of the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, Simmons completely owned the room. The other acts that performed at The Clubhouse included Mick Davies, Emesha Rudolf, Peter Escott, and Doug (aka. Tracey Cosgrove). Tim Logan and David Bakker co-hosted the evening. The next Clubhouse will be on Friday, the 21st of October, and will be headlined by Melbourne veteran Michael Chamberlin and supported by Tassie ex-pat Matt ìChopperî Burton. Judging by the quality of the latest show, The Clubhouse will have no trouble living up to itís claim as ìHobartís Warmest and Fuzziest Comedy Hangout.

Jason Bateman Horrible Bosses Interview Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis may have thriving, almost-dreamy careers, but as the stars of the latest hit comedy Horrible Bosses tell Ashleigh HillBuxton, it wasn’t always fun and games at the workplace. Bateman, a former TV star (having made his breakthrough in the 80’s sitcom The Hogan Family and in the more recent Arrested Development) says he’s had his share of run-in’s with nasty bosses. “I was an assistant coach to an eight-year-old kid’s soccer team...[the coach] was rough on me, always making me pick up pylons and taking the nets off the posts,” said Bateman.

“They’d be like, “Why is he making up all his lines?”,” said Bateman. Day was also highly complimentary on the time he spent on set as an ‘employee’ of Jennifer Aniston. “It was great, she’s very pleasant. She looked great doing it and she had a lot of fun doing it. I was happy to be sexually harassed by her every day; it was a lot of fun,” said Day.

Best known for his work on TV’s It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Day hasn’t had quite as smooth an acting career as Bateman, so it goes without saying that he’s endured quite a few more rotten job – and the bosses that come along with them. “When I waited tables I had a few nasty bosses here and there. I don’t remember their names, but I’m sure they also don’t remember me, “ said Day. Humour is much more present onscreen in Horrible Bosses, where Bateman, Day and Sudeikis star as a trio of beleaguered employees who decide to exact revenge on their bosses after years of psychological torture, sexual harassment and drug-induced demands. With three big names in comedy onboard, one might assume there were a few tussles over who gets the best lines in the film? “I think we spread them out pretty equally,” said Sudeikis. “Yeah we did...and if we didn’t have a good one we made one up,” said Bateman. Atypical of a film like this, improvisation played a frequent and essential role – particularly on Day’s part. “They didn’t figure out until after the movie that I couldn’t read or write,” said Day.

However, Bateman described his time as the psychological plaything of uber-boss Kevin Spacey as “less fun” but relatively simple... “Well I just had to take it and look scared, that was easy; he’s very good at his job,” said Bateman.

www.sauce.net.au

With The Hangover, Bridesmaids and now Horrible Bosses proving to be massive box-office successes, it would seem that the world is going crazy for racy comedies. “Yeah they’ve been popular for a while. It petered out right after ours [Laughs] Yep, that ship has sailed...” said Bateman. Bateman, whose latest film The Change-Up (another a raunchy comedy) flopped miserably in the US last week, explains his take on how the popularity of comedies seems to continually wax and wane. “It was fun for a couple of months there. I don’t know, I think maybe people like to be shocked and then... they don’t any more, they start craving tasteful movies again. So now, over the fall and winter, we start seeing all the tasteful Oscar movies come out,” said Bateman.

Bebe Sparkle

Saucy.sparkle Tales of Tease and all things sparkling from

Hobart’s own Queen of Diamonds Bebe Sparkle I was lucky enough to be on the judging panel of Miss Pole Dance Victoria this year and bear witness to an amazingly athletic array of Pole performances from some of Australia’s best pole artists.

Included in this talented bunch of finalists was Miss Filly who previously held the title for Miss Pole Dance Victoria Doubles Champion 2011 with her sister and was also runner up Miss Pole Dance Victoria 2011. Now Miss Filly holds a new title that she shares with her partner in crime, ‘Bootsy’ - Miss Pole Dance Victoria Doubles Champion 2012! Her title winning doubles performance was undoubtedly the best performance of the night leaving myself and my fellow judges relaxing back into our chairs, glancing at our score sheets, then at each other with that look on our faces that read - “ do we even need score that!!” It was hands down a winning performance of the evening, extremely entertaining, creative, fun and athletic, also winning the largest audience applause . I promised a few issues ago an interview with this Victorian pole champion and now I deliver after finding a moment with Miss Filly to ask a few of the questions my students, aspiring pole artists, fans and myself are dying to ask. Miss Filly: Interview Sooo many questions for you Miss Filly, but first, one I get asked regularly...what drew you to become a pole dancer and why do you do it? I wasn’t really “drawn” to become a pole dancer.. more dragged by my sister a few years ago. We had spent way too much time in the couch watching M*A*S*H re-runs and eating cake and she had decided she wanted a different kind of dance to get her out of the house. I tagged along supposedly for moral support and after the first class we were addicted. It may have started as a way to make me feel less guilty for my penchant for sticky date pudding but envolved into a way of expressing my own strength and for the first time really learning how to dance. I was a fan of being in a room with smiling girls of all shapes and ages all wearing short shorts! You make it look so easy and effortless, but for those of us that perform pole... we know otherwise! What tips can you share for making pole moves look graceful and to perform transitions with ease? Strength is a big part of looking graceful. I dont have a dance back ground but working on my all-over body strengthening has been a big part in cleaning up my transitions. Try and move in and out of tricks as slowly as possible! If you can hold a trick for 8 (long!) counts and control the exit you’re still working all the muscles you need

to get into the trick in the first place. I film almost every practice session i do so i can see myself on the pole - watching how my body moves and seeing what might feel good, but actually look awkward! For girls that are new to pole and aspire to become title winning pole stars like yourself, what would you say would be a realistic time frame to train from scratch to your level and how often should they train? A week, a month, a year ... who knows? There’s no set time frame for learning or improving as it relies so much on the individual. You see some students with fantastic strength, but they can have trouble with a body roll or walking ... or the other way around! Pole dancing uses so many different elements, not just strength, fluidity, grace, flexibility, body awareness or even being able to count to music! Some areas may take longer than others to work on, then, of course, there are those freaky people that pick it all up in an afternoon. Bastards! lol Do you have any other tips that may be useful for aspiring pole dancers? YouTube as much as you can! Then, find your own style. You will always work out a trick, think you’re the first person in the world in the history of anything to do it - you name it after yourself and sequin it onto your favourite hot pants - bake a cake in its honour - then you see someone posted a video of it on Facebook last year. Its shattering :), but you never stop learning. That’s what makes pole such a great dance form and art, really. Being creative and using your imagination is what makes great pole dancers stand out. Unfortunately in my imagination there is no gravity. Hmmmm. Well, Miss Filly you seem to be winning the battle against gravity every time you are on that pole! Having competed numerous times yourself, would you recommend other girls to compete in Miss Pole Dance and what was the scariest thing about competing for you? Always compete because you like performing, not because you think you have to, or because

“... pole also teaches confidence and body love.”

Miss Filly someone told you to. Despite that, i say DO IT! The Miss Pole Dance competition showcases Australia’s talent and damn we have some amazing talent! It’s also the most inspirational experience to meet and share ideas with other people that live, breathe and dream pole just like you. It helps remind you that you’re not the only pole-crazed person in the country! These are also the people that support you before your show, congratulate you as you come off and drink with you afterwards. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to get up on stage infront of hundreds of people and dance however you want to dance and wear whatever you want to wear to tell your story...And people clap! Thats good too. Getting over yourself is hard and is the hardest thing for me. It’s so easy to feel sorry for yourself, or worry that people will think you’re not good enough or will be able to tell you don’t have a dance background or judge you for having a ice cream for dinner. But pole also teaches confidence and body love.

Photography by: Greg Desiatov | www.gregdphotography.com

Getting up on that stage and being proud of the figure you cut in the lights is the scariest, but also the most empowering thing. What a cute little 5 ft figure it is too! So what does the future hold for Miss Filly? Not sure, but I hope it keeps me out of trouble! Thanks, Bebe Sparkle xx Miss Filly and her duo pole partner ‘Bootsy’ will be flying up to Sydney Nov 4th to compete in the National Finals for Miss Pole Dance Australia! Fashion - big jelly mouse grows again shopfront opens in hobart CBD ... where was lara?

IYou may have seen their stall at the Salamanca Markets, or the Evandale Markets or maybe even at The Falls Festival. Wherever Big Jelly Mouse is you’ll find unique clothes, and lots of smiles. Now, there’s even more ... By David Williams Starting just under three years ago, the venture has grown rapidly, with the recent opening of a shop front in Liverpool St, Hobart. How did it all begin? Where is it heading? And what have been the secrets to their success? We asked proprietor, and giver of great big smiles, Anna Cooper, for the inside story. Can you tell us a bit about the history of Big Jelly Mouse? When I started Big JellyMouse nearly 3 years as a fortnightly stall at Salamanca Market it was my plan to showcase the work of independent & emerging artists from both Tassie and overseas. I have always been captivated by the amazing designs in our world, adorning the walls of contemporary art galleries, on the street & in various design-based publications. So wanting to make art more a part of the everyday lives of others we started to incorporate the works of designers we fancied & who wanted to be involved onto the items that many of us use to express ourselves in our daily life - apparel, accessories and homewares. It was also intended that all of our apparel would be made from organic cotton and made in a sweatshop free environment.

Our designs come predominantly from our evergrowing collective of both local & international artists, designers & illustrators. There are bucket loads to choose from & it is our aim to constantly put out new designs and to keep things fresh & edgey. Given this, I would also like to put a call out to any local creative types who would like us to stock their work &/or who have ace designs that they think might look good on a tee, to please get in touch to have a chat about the possibilities…. What can people find at Big Jelly Mouse that they can’t find elsewhere? Lots ha ha. Big JellyMouse offers a great collection of high quality anti-sweatshop designwear (tees, tanks, hoodies & jumpers) & accessories that are made to last & mostly concieved by independent artists & illustrators. We have an extensive inhouse range of limited editions & one of a kind designs, prints, cards,

melamine plates & bags that will be sure to satisfy customers’ need for something different :) We are also exclusive stockists for MonsterGallery, LooseCannon, 647 Creations, BlackMilk, EAU, MooPoo, EricNobel & MonsterThreads. Our gorgeous tees, homewares & accessories make very special gifts and on request we will happily package any purchase in some kind of snazzy way. Who are the typical people who wear clothes from Big Jelly Mouse? Groovy funksters & those who want random strangers to hug them. No, just kidding, them too, but pretty much guys, girls, olders, youngsters, in-betweeners, biggie & smallies and we have lots of children’s gear also. So we aim to have something special for everyone. Readers will, most likely, be familiar with you, from your stalls at The Falls Festival,

The Salamanca Markets and The Evandale Markets. You’ve also got an online store at www. bigjellymouse.com, but you’re opening a physical store in Liverpool St, in Hobart. Why have you decided to do this? My kids are both at school now so I have a little more time on my hands. Being a fortnightly stall at Salamanca many of our customers have asked if we have another Hobart based outlet. So, opening the shop will provide a more regular place for everyone to find us. Although 179 Liverpool Street is a small space, we are also hoping that by being more permanent, we will be able to extend our range even further & also host occasional installations & exhibitions featuring emerging talent. Go say hi to Anna at the shop. As well as supporting ethics in the clothing industry, and independent designers, you’ll get a smile for free!

In those earlier days I simply wanted to provide Tassie with something that was quiet different from everything else on offer here and that was a) ethical, b) very high quality & c) not outrageously expensive. Since then, nothing much has changed as BJM still operates from this ideology and although our range has expanded significantly we are proud of being able to stay true to our original philosophy. Given BJM’s early success & encouragement from our customers, we then went on to have a stall at the Falls Festival every year since and to also establish our online store bigjellymoue. com What’s your policy regarding the production of the items you sell? Big JellyMouse is anti-sweatshop & very environmentally aware. We aim to stock apparel that is either handmade by our creative collective or is from a sweatshop-free environment & ideally made from organic cotton. We screenprint here in Hobart using water-based organic inks and have friends in Sydney who do our digital printing. In the next few weeks we will also be receiving our first consignment from a community of Vietnamese women who we will be supporting. These ladies make the most amazing bags & wallets etc from recycled feedbags that they import from Cambodia. BJM also supports local artist & jewerlly designers some of whom use recycled materials in their work. Basically we want to stock items that are good on all levels & not about making a profit at the expense of the environment or others  Where do the designs come from?
