MIND HUSTLE IMPROVE YOUR PERSONAL SWAG

Some people become entrepreneurs for many different reasons, some to do what they love, others to help serve people, and others, just to pay their bills. Whatever their motivation is for starting their own businesses, the most successful entrepreneurs are really Artists. These people are the ones who create, develop and execute their craft. As the Hip- Hop Chef my vision is to create and sculpture masterpieces that people will enjoy. I believe it takes a true Artist to see and make something out of nothing; and an even greater Artist to begin the process to sculpt the situation to match that which they envision. Sometimes no one can see what you see and sometimes people may even tell you that you are “different” for thinking you can see some kind of opportunity. Several years ago, I was looking for a way to break into the Hip-Hop and Entertainment Industry without being a Rapper. I chose cooking as my option. When the Hip-Hop Chef brand was created, cooking and being a Chef

2 www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

wasn’t popular like it is today. I wanted to be a Celebrity Chef who worked with celebrities that ranged from Hip-Hop to Pop and beyond. Now look at my life today. I put my “mind” to it and I’m doing just that. But I was hungry and determined to be a part of this great Hip-Hop culture. I studied the people I wanted to cook for; and eventually have as clients. Next, I developed a blue print. The most important aspect of my endeavour was that, I believed in “ME”. See, we have to stop making excuses for our unwillingness to do what’s necessary and step out on FAITH! The price of freedom (financial freedom or otherwise) is the unwavering desire to THINK something different. Dr. King was different. Gandhi was amazingly brilliant yet, different. Mind Hustle is a recipe not found on your everyday menu. It is a proven recipe for those who need a rapid solution to a lifelong condition. And that condition is thinking small. Swan Simpson provides healthy resolutions on life, wealth, happiness and prosperity. As an expert in the field of human potential, she shares her experiences as well as the experiences of ordinary people, who like myself, are doing extraordinary things. All because we made up our MINDS to do so and you can too.- The Original Hip Hop Chef

REAL TALK:

RETIRE RICH AND RETIRE NOW! It’s been a year since the 1st issue of Black Moguls Magazine hit the streets. We began as Moguls Magazine and have grown into being more of a Black Moguls Magazine. It’s all about what’s good, what’s right and what’s excellent in our community. And I’m proud of what we are representing in Black Entrepreneurship in America. As I’m sitting in Barnes and Nobel in Charlotte, North Carolina writing these words, I’m overhearing the conversation of a group of professional men and women who are discussing the trials of working and being mobile in Corporate America. It’s so funny to me how nothing changes in that world. It’s all about training new bodies to replace the old ones who eventually drop out. Think about it…..You work, you grind, you learn how to diplomatically kiss butt, there is always this idea that you must compete for mobility. You often lose respect from your peers who eventually become your direct reports. You detest your boss. You rise, you fall, but you do it for the comforts of getting a regular paycheck. Then you ultimately realize that none of it has been worth the time, the frustrations and stress that you have taken your life through. At 65 or so, you retire and you drop dead with all of your truest hopes, best potential and unexplored dreams locked away inside of you. This is such a dis-service to the Universe that has entrusted you to a divine purpose.

Swan Simpson, Publisher & CEO @BlackMogulsMag

What we need are new Leaders in the Urban Community. Those risk takers who will become the job creators and who will seize opportunities to work for themselves. If you are going to deal with crap, you might as well do it for yourself. Walking in your divine purpose will make way for your gifts. It is time for those who hear the call to heed the assignment. In this issue, you will have the opportunity to learn more about how you too can RETIRE RICH! Read the blueprints of those who have taken the chance, rolled the dice, walked away from the idea of having so-called stable jobs and have TRULY made it! Sean “Diddy” Combs built his company in his one bedroom apartment. He dropped out of college to get it; and has never looked back. I started this magazine for less than $10 and a small team of dedicated Designers from India who have worked with me through the ups and the downs as we figure things out through trial and error. Sometimes it really does start with just a dollar and a dream. Now you too have to make up your mind that this is YOUR APPOINTED TIME. Happy Anniversary to us at Black Moguls Magazine; and thank you so much for the love and the support as we could not have done it without you!

Perspectives

African-Americans don’t have a problem with complaining about Black-owned businesses that lack credibility and good customer service. Let’s face it: Too many African-Americans make it a habit of discrediting so many of their own businesses that they consciously and subconsciously send that message to other groups. Whenever negative messages are sent out about Black-owned businesses, it’s difficult for those who do own a black-owned business that provides great products and/or services to overcome the negative stereotypes. I’m amazed at the mindset many people have about Black-owned businesses but fail to take a stand and voice their displeasure and dissatisfaction when it comes to non-Black businesses that treat them unfairly. Let’s take, for example, many Chinese carryout stores within Black neighborhoods. You’ll find many (not all) of the establishments dirty, unkempt, and not professional looking at all. In addition to this, you have to pass your money through a bullet proof window. Yet, these businesses continue to thrive within our communities. Where’s the outcry about the appearance? Where’s the demand for cleanliness and professionalism? I submit to you if a Black-owned restaurant and/or carry-out would look like such, they would not be in business long. The African-American community must undo the negative stereotypes associated with Black-owned businesses. You know the stereotypes – open late/close early, poor customer service, and high prices, just to name a few. These comments along with other detrimental sayings will continue to make it difficult for new and existing Black-owned businesses to thrive. Here’s what we can do as a community to crush the negative stereotypes of Black-owned businesses: 1. Support and promote those businesses that provide excellent products/services 2. Speak with business owners about any concerns 3. Stop accepting inferior treatment from other businesses (non-black) 4. Refuse to adopt the Black-owned business stereotype. As soon as someone begins speaking negatively about Blackowned businesses, don’t feed into it. Counteract it with talking about the value of Black-owned businesses and name some of them 5. Start your own business and lead by example

5 WAYS TO SHUTDOWN NEGATIVE STEREOTYPES ABOUT BLACK OWNED BUSINESSES Dr. Sinclair Grey III 6 www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

Collectively, we can undo the myth that many of our Blackowned businesses face day after day. If we really care about keeping businesses open and thriving in our communities, it’s up to us to speak life into it. So many people like to say, ‘Be careful of what you say because what you say will manifest itself.’ Well, let’s begin by saying ‘The negative stereotypes associated with Black-owned businesses is over.’ I declare that we must support one another to create opportunities for those in our community. Also, we must accept the best from these businesses as we do other businesses. Dr. Sinclair Grey III is an activist, speaker, writer, author, and life coach. Personal Power Turning Your Dreams 2 Reality

“Don’t chase your dreams. Catch Them!“ -Gerald Bass Gerald Bass was once an ambitious young student at Florida A& M University majoring in Music. But always having the love for business, he changed schools and his major to Business. In 2006, he decided to merge both and quickly became one of the Industry’s Top Club Promoters and Artist Managers. In 2011 the economy hit his business hard forcing him out of the game. As a result, he was introduced to Network Marketing and the rest is history. Now at 29 years old, Gerald Bass is one of the Top 5% income earners in Paycation. He spends his time traveling and enjoying the good life while coaching hundreds of other people across the globe into realizing their own dreams.

In this column Gerald has chosen to share his wealth principles and philosophy with the readers of Black Moguls Magazine: IDEAS IN MOTION “The Biggest Secret in life is there is no big secret!!!Your Greatest Power is your power to love.” You have to know your goals. Ask yourself what do I want to be? Then you have to do the work it takes to get there. Love is important because you have to love what it is that you are doing. If you do what you love it’s no longer a job, it’s a passion. Your journey begins with a choice to get up, step out, and live fully. You have to ask yourself. What is my life’s purpose? What am I here for? Your life’s purpose is to be of service to others. If you don’t know what your passion is, it is your duly on earth to find out. ADVICE TO THOSE STRIVING TO GET THERE My #1 Spiritual practice is living in the present moment. Resist projecting the future or lamenting past mistakes. You have to feel the power of now. Don’t worry about: What if it goes wrong? Because what if it goes right? That creates anxiety. What you always have is now. To project the future, or to anticipate the future creates anxiety even if it’s positive. Focus on today. Don’t go it alone. The quickest way to get from where you are to where you want to be is to find a Mentor. Get with someone who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Someone who sees more value in you than you see in yourself. Don’t you think it’s time for you to live the life you want? Suggested Daily Ritual: Be thankful for what you have and you will have more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have you will never ever have enough.“ One of my Mentors told me a while back to focus daily on gratitude, thankfulness, praise, self-awareness, love, public energy, and taking responsibility. It changed my life! I know it can do the same for you!” Gerald Bass is an MLM/Network Marketing Coach. MIND BODY SPIRIT Breaking Every Chain I must admit this story was somewhat challenging for me. For the past few weeks, I found myself in a writer’s dungeon. My inspiration to write was stifled and I struggled in my quest to figure out why. While in this dungeon, my brain began to take me on an emotional roller coaster and for some reason I felt I was bound in chains. Trying to balance the emotional roller coaster, find inspiration to write, and break the chains that were binding me seemed to be an extreme challenge. Maybe your chains of bondage aren’t the same as mines. However, it seems that everyone in the world has something that’s holding them back from reaching their pinnacle of success. Everyone I’ve encountered this past few weeks shared a reason why they weren’t where they wanted to be. So to say, that I was alone in this situation, definitely wasn’t the truth. Since I’ve always tried to be transparent in my writing, I feel that readers need to know that sometimes successful people find periods in their lives when they simply don’t feel inspired. Successful people aren’t immune to life’s challenges. So, if your life mimics everything that I’m saying, embrace it. Understand the “truth still has the ability to set us free!”When people stop trying to live behind the facades of life and simply enjoy the life that they were given, their lives began to soar.

As we at Black Moguls Magazine celebrate our 1 year anniversary, I began to ponder our anniversary theme, “The GOOD LIFE”. As we look forward to a better life this third quarter of the year, I challenge my readers to allow the universe to BREAK EVERY CHAIN that’s binding you. As I thought about my own human ability, I began to realize that the chain that has been holding me was my desire to remain in control of every aspect of my life. I mean, isn’t that what we’re taught. “Take Charge!” The moment I began to simply embrace the journey, my inspiration came back. This is why, I’m challenging everyone who finds themselves stressed out and bound in emotional chains to simply “LET GO & LET GOD!”Did he say, “GOD?”YES. In today’s culture, we seem to be ashamed to be connected to GOD! Even if your idea of God isn’t the same as mines, I hope we get the concept that sometimes if we’re willing to let go of the steering wheel and allow the universe to guide us, we could truly live the good life. I believe that these messages are paralleled in biblical teaching when the bible mentions that we’re to “seek ye first the kingdom”and to “cast your cares on him!”When we learn to release, our bodies find total peace and tranquility. It has been proven scientifically that stress can sometime cause our bodies to shut down. • Go outside and literally smell the roses. • Alter your busy schedule to include diversions like a walk in the park. • Take a deep breath and EXHALE! • Meditate One final thought is a question. Guess what? YOU ARE ALIVE! Did chills just go down your back? If you said yes, it’s because you realize that many didn’t make it to see today! BUT YOU ARE HERE! Embrace it. Enjoy it. LIVE IN IT! Breathe, exhale and get ready for the ride of your life as the universe guides you to be the Black Mogul that you were destined to be. LOVE YOU GUYS. Happy Anniversary Black Moguls Magazine! Seven Figure

LIFE

Growing up I always wondered about the answer to this question. And as I’ve gotten older, I made it my mission to discover the answer(s) and then share them with the readers of Black Moguls Magazine and my column. After spending thousands of dollars on research, training, coaching and events, I’ve discovered that the only thing that separates those who make Millions of dollars from those who struggle to make ends meet are their habits. I’ve literally simplified this for you and boiled it down to the 7 Habits Of Million Dollar Earners that you can start applying TODAY. Are you ready? Let’s Get 2 It… 12 www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

7 THE

HABITS OF MILLION DOLLAR EARNERS

MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #1

MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #4

WAKE UP EARLY

PERSONAL DEVELOPMEN

T

While most people like to sleep in, most Millionaires that I’ve studied wake up at 5am. One of my mentors even calls this “The 5am Club.”

Your income will rarely grow beyond your personal development. And if it happens to do so, it will be short lived. You will lose it all.

This is very uncomfortable at first, but I promise you as you begin to do it for a couple weeks, it gets very easy and it’s more than worth it.

Commit to never ending learning. A good way to do this is something as simple as reading 10 pages of a book per day (nonfiction). A book that’s business or personal development related.

MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #2

PLAN TOMORROW TODAY Millionaires know that their time is their most valuable asset, so instead of waking up in the morning with no direction, they already have their “Success List” a.k.a ToDo List done the night before and they start with the most important items first. MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #3

PHYSICAL AC TIVITY Your health is your Wealth so doing some kind of physical activity daily is very important. I teach all of my coaching clients this, because what’s making a lot of money if your health isn’t in tact. Now you don’t have to go out and buy a gym membership. All you have to do is something simple like walking or cardio for 20 minutes every day to get your heart rate going. I personally recommend doing this physical activity first thing in the morning.

You also have the option of downloading Audible on your phone and listening to great audiobooks if you prefer listening to books over reading page by page. I listen to these books at 2 times the speed so I can get through twice as many books. MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #5

MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #7

GRATITUDE & AFFIRMATIO

NS

The fastest way to become wealthy is by affirming all of the things you have to be grateful for. Things like eyes to read this article, clean water, a brain etc. I encourage you to take 10 minutes or so after reading this article and write 50 Things You Are Grateful for. And what makes affirmations so powerful is that when you speak things in a certain way (Mind Hustle) you begin to attract those things to you. State what you want by beginning with the phrase, “I AM” followed by whatever it is that you desire. For example, I AM Rich. I AM a Millionaire. Here is a word of caution….be careful what you say or put out into the Universe. Because obviously this can work also for you or against you. MILLION DOLLAR HABIT #7

FIND A COACH OR MENTOR Have you ever heard the saying, “Stick to what you know”? Well that’s the worse advice somebody could ever give you. All of the greats have coaches to help propel them to the next level and beyond. It’s important to have coaches who are willing to point out your blind spots and help you shorten your learning curve.

MEDITATION & PRAYER Most Millionaires that I’ve studied do some type of meditation and prayer. Some do one or the other and some (like me), do both. Personal Development Expert Deepak Chopra says,“Meditation is twice as effective as sleep.” Meditation puts you in a state that you can’t get in while sleep or awake. A couple ways to get started meditating is an app called Headspace. I also use the “Release Meditation Technique” that Brendon Burchard created. You can search that on YouTube.

CULTURE It is evident that American media portrayals ostracized people of color. We are forced to arrive at the harsh realization that our citizenship is further defined by the pigmentation of our skin. If the summer has taught us anything it is that our humanity is a burden. What better way to ease the burden than to share it; for it was never ours to carry. Savvy moguls have recognized the importance of challenging conventional norms and have used social media to announce their agendas. These agendas are meticulously organized sharing these concepts Developing the voice; Broadcasting & amplifying our good; Drowning the negative; and Protecting your investment. No curation without representation, creating black privilege is an objective inspired by inserting our presence into perceptionsthat collectively serve our communities. The first step in creating black privilege is developing the voice. The voice in social media realm is judged by the content distributed. Much like a conversation, the tone and context delivers a unique perspective attributed to your voice. One lesson that remains true when comparing social media to traditional media is that they are both content driven. Some may think that we have no choice in what subject matter we are exposed to; as mass media dominates and influences Americans by force feeding racially charged stereo types. The promotion of the mass media agenda leaves popular culture to determine what our voice is by intellectualizing the handling of generalizations and converting these ideals into reality. A perfect example of such is the recent identity crisis. While trending hashtags on twitter provided comedic dismissal of cultural self-assignment and the notion of transracial; we began to analyze those in leadership positions who seek to educate the world on the elimination of race-based discrimination. This is critical when the vantage points are again derived from mass media. While perfecting our voice on social media we cannot ignore the need to transform the societal media appropriations. It is imperative that this message be disseminatedif we are continually measured by our hue.

No Curation Without Representation:

Creating Black Privilege -Evan McCullough

The veil of confusion that was meant to dominate our conversations only served as a temporary distraction to the loftier American crisis. Where the American dream is cast upon the symbolic colors of the flag; ironically the “white” which supposedly represents purity and innocence, only dictates the color of privilege that has tarnished the land of the free. As a minority the outrage over the confederate flag is justified and directs me to question the valor and justice that our American flag is said to signify. It was no coincidence that a few days prior horrific actions headlined that stripped these youth of their rights, dignity and pride. “Upholding the law” yet again was clever camouflage by the police and white Americans who deemed it necessary to actively participate in discriminatory practices.

An actress interviewed about the McKinney Pool Party incident commented, “Take race out of it. That’s a girl, that’s a young woman in a bikini and that man slammed her down; like, she was no threat”. Taraji P. Henson known as Cookie Lyon to her 17.6 million viewers of the show “Empire”, indirectly targeted the greatest problem that minorities currently face. Americans refuse to take race out of the equation; it is used as a variable to constantly justify the various injustices that have taken place.

to get their questions answered from 42 successful black film makers. Notable trendsetters include Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Salim Akil, Debbie Allen, Malcom D. Lee just to name a few. The conversation flourished encompassing the theme of diversity in cinema. Oprah Winfrey eloquently responded to a tweet, “the beauty of multiple and diverse storytelling. No one story fits all.” The previous tweet that mentioned her described a fear of industry rejection due to the uniqueness of the project.

It is no secret that imaging in film and on tv directly relate to the ideology and thought process of Americans. Director Ava DuVernay is one of many who is ensuring that our stories are told from our vantage point and not a view decreed by the masses. Most recognized for her recent award-winning film Selma, she has embrace her unique perspective stating that being a ‘black woman filmmaker,’ is not a confinement but the lens through

This campaign resulted in shared wisdom and incorporation of projects in the African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement. On her effort to spread awareness Ava DuVernay concluded “It’s all about this whole movement, black film is beautiful and if we want to see these things we can’t just complain about it, we have to do something.”

which she is working. “I don’t feel like it’s any less or limiting. I’m a black woman filmmaker and my films are just as valid as the white man filmmaker and whoever else,” she exclaimed with pride. The narrative in race relations changes when bodies of work are introduced that represent our culture and identity. More often than not, we are excluded in the decision making process. Contrarily, if we are included, our contributions are reduced to something miniscule that lacks meaning and impact. During an interview, DuVernay notes that “This industry is no longer what it used to be. The gatekeeper’s gates are rusting”, I would like to think that social media plays a major role. Now those in the industry can connect directly with their audience even if they are not explicitly identified. Stakeholders have been using this to consolidate efforts and use a collective synergy to communicate stories that would otherwise be unheard. Ava DuVernay is very familiar with such frameworks as she organized the 2nd 12 hour “Rebel-A-Thon,” on twitter. Those astute and well versed with the social media vocabulary would refer to this as a twitter chat. As the coordinator of the event DuVernay encourage film enthusiasts to use the hashtag #ARRAY

Comparing the biases in headlines and the improper coverage in the news incentivizes our voice to grow stronger. Due to the devastation and senseless violent attacks on paternal figures, the idea of the black man and the black family is astonishing to some. Since violence is prevalent, one father Matt Prestbury, decided to directly combat the portrayals of fatherhood in the minority community. He created a brotherhood of fathers that could demonstrate the positives aspects of what it means to be a farther. The organizer of this unique group has grown membership to over 9,000 Facebook members. When asked what his intent was when creating the space he said, “I wanted to create a virtual space where fathers could come together and be a resource for each other — and help break lot of stereotypes to change the narrative of what it means to be a black father in America.” It is important for dads to get a sense of validation especially when there are so many positive fathers who have been slain or whose children have been murdered. An example of this is the father of Trayvon Martin who initiated an event called Circle of Fathers. “A Conference on 21st Century Fatherhood” focused on bringing together a multicultural and intergenerational mix of men dedicated to helping foster the role of fathers in communities. Those fallen fathers are all the more tragic such as Eric Garner and Nicholas Thomas. Tristan “TJ” Thomas, the brother of the late Nicholas Thomas, often uses social media to illustrate the characteristics of fatherhood in the light of media’s rapid attacks on Nick’s character. The latest protest was at CNN for the lack of coverage and accurate information provided to the public. CNN is not the only organization to withhold information in the latest developments. Although the GBI investigation has concluded, the Cobb County’s to County District Attorney, Vic Reynolds, doesn’t want anyone to see that footage until the case goes to the grand jury. This information was conveyed by the GBI to Felicia Thomas, the mother of the victim. She was infuriated and disappointed by the lack of a thorough investigation. Obviously this is another ploy to prevent justice from prevailing but the family has remained steadfast. Even in the wake of new evidence from a metro-Atlanta medical examiner’s autopsy report the family relentlessly campaigns against police brutality. In this report the victim’s death resulted from a shot in the back which directly contradicts police claims of self-defense.“ The medical examiner’s report says Thomas died from a gunshot wound after a bullet entered his upper back on the right side. The bullet hit his lungs and aorta before coming to rest in his upper chest on the

left side.” Nicholas’ father, Huey Thomas spoke on the matter stating,” I just believe that the officer jumped the gun and shot when he should not have shot my son.” As we deal with appropriations and misrepresentations we have to address the negative as facades that are not archetypal of the holistic body of our people. The Charleston Massacre is a perfect example of how there is no equality in media portrayals. The description of the murder by the media and even the judge presiding over the bail hearing alerts us to the eminent danger that we face if we don’t combat the blanket of white privilege and the cloak of white supremacy that is over the country. Popular rapper Nas remarked, “Racism is rotting America. It’s been rotting America since its inception” in reference to the Charleston Massacre. The body count maybe multiplying but there are already several groups who are determined to fight against the status quo while calling attention to our own works. Many have come to the conclusion that if we unite behind our works eventually a demand will be created to focus on the positive and amplify our good. The active embrace of investing in your community can yield tremendous results. In a diverse manner, use social media to create a personal crusade for your cause. We Must Go Forward is a grassroots project that focuses on doing just that. They use films to illustrate stories representative of the African American Family. The visual arts have always been a powerful tool to introduce and impose cultural change. We Must Go Forward embodies the philosophy of the civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A nation of people can advance their civility through establishing and grounding themselves with a commitment to morality and spirituality. Film is used to spark conversations and to create dialogues that can open a conveyer to enlightenment. Not only are projects being created to distribute films, films are being created that cast us in an exemplary light. One film that is making an impact is “Teachers” starring Tatyana Ali and Jordyn Barber. It’s produced by Stephen Love. This film comes at a time where our country as a whole strays away from placing a high value on education. The film explores the complications and realities of educating in the United States while capturing the difficult and emotional experience educator’s face when dealing with students in high poverty troubling situations. Our stories often have connections to the rhythm and rhyme. However, more often than not the powers that be, capitalize off artists’ struggles. Furthermore, the facades in the industry promote negative imagery. It illuminates crab barrel politics to hold a position in the music hierarchy. Nominated for “Best Director” by the Los Angeles Film Review, Brittany Fennell personifies a rappers narrative. The Independent Film Q.U.E.E.N. tells the story of a teenage girl with a troubled past who uses her gift of rapping to transform herself. Major contributions to the community are not limited to what can be caught behind the camera. As Leaders from HBCU’s also do their part to uplift the community. Millennials can now benefit from the forward thinking of Fathom founders who are leaving their mark on the Greater Nashville Area and

soon to be expanding operations across college campuses and communities in need of their services. Fathom’s platform combines Web 2.0 online tools including social networking and crowdsourcing with real-world strategies to impact social change through a culture of empowerment. Ventures like these teach us that we are our biggest commodity in the fight for social justice and change. Our direct contribution through any form of media is raising our consciousness, designing these ventures and making them viral. Students Talking Out Problems (S.T.O.P. Inc.), has partnered to support youth breaking the chains of oppression through the Wear Your Crown, Queen- Education Conference. At this conference a high caliber of female activist and entrepreneurs alike will be conducting workshops such as Ilyahsah Al-Shabazz speaker and daughter of slain civil rights leader Malcolm X, Kamaya Chapman Celebrity PR rep and Nisha Glenn Founder and Owner of Educated Girls Rock. We must make sure that our actions are not diluted when we tell our stories. After hearing the Poet Crystal Valentine’s Powerful Explanation of ‘Black Privilege’ in a viral youtube video, I was convinced that people of color must create their own privilege. We continue to curate the extraordinary and make our realities pulsate through the veins of all Americans. It is then that we can begin to repair the damage that is destroying our communities. We must do our due diligence ensuring we drown out the negative. John Amos recently conducted an interview explaining why he stopped being a part of the show Good Times. As a character with a major role he objected to the negative portrayals in the show. In today’s social world we have the power to impact the negative in real time. We are able to alter history from the strokes of our phone. Social Media helps one to express their intrinsic powers and therefore the true power is in “the action”. The action, the doing is a contagion that America badly needs from people of color. It is a shame that we must take these actions for popular culture to realize our contributions. Let us also remember that we are answering this calling so our own communities have a rich history that can transcend into their future. During several conversations with people I hold in high esteem including a fellow blogger Brittany M. Williams; I was convinced to dedicate this article to creating black privilege. POWER PROFILES Black Women In Construction Meloni Boatswain-Swan Simpson, Publisher

Young, gifted, Black and a woman working in an Industry where women are rare and Black women are rarest. Meloni Boatswain sits upon her throne as a 32 year old young Mogul. Tasked with breaking glass ceilings and crushing the competitive landscape; the Queen has risen to her current state of success in what is undoubtedly a (white)man’s world. From the homes of Moguls to the Mansions of Millionaires she has been the woman in charge. But Black Moguls Magazine wanted to know how a Pre-Med student with a degree from Duke University becomes the goto person in the Construction arena. Meloni and I finally synched up our schedules and did a late night session that included chopping it up to get this interview done. I must tell you that after our talk, I am single handedly a huge fan. Very approachable and very passionate about the work she does, the story is finally all laid out for me. Growing up in New York her Father owned a small construction company. And her parents were Real Estate Investors. So, naturally having been exposed to the industry she found herself involved in a number of projects as time would bring. Her parents wanted her to be a Doctor, but the turning point for this Mogul was when she was in the position to hire her Father’s company to do a demolition project for her in Harlem. It was at this point, that she knew she was sitting in the driver’s seat of the car she wanted to own. And owning the Construction Industry she has done INDEED. By looking at a typical day in her life, you would see that Meloni handles Construction Project Management. But her formal role is that of Architectural Design Manager; where she oversees numerous multimillion dollar high-end projects such as those of more upscale restaurants. But her work is not your typical operations and installations. This powerbroker is focused on the higher end interiors and finishes like that of her signature work on the breathtaking St.Regis Atlanta Hotel. Finally, by all indication Meloni Boatswain is a Pioneer who has an 11 year, flawless, high profile career that has been recognized by numerous Construction Trade Publications. She is widely respected by her peers. She is also the Author of a forthcoming book. And even with all of that taking up a huge chunk of her time, she still sits on The Board of Directors for I AM OKAH…..where she mentors young people on Investing and Entrepreneurship.

POWER NETWORKING National Black and Latino Council’s Lance Robertson -Inside The Publisher’s Rolodex The building that houses the National Black and Latino Council’s Headquarters is located in Downtown Atlanta. I came upon the building and was met with securely locked doors. After a brief clearance, I walked in and took the elevator up to the 2nd floor. The Receptionist had me wait in a nearby conference room. Since I had a little time, I started reading the notes I’d jotted down to make sure that I uncover as much as I could with the time we’d set aside for this meeting today. The man of the hour finally entered the room all pumped and ready! His million dollar smile and smooth finesse reminds you of someone running for elected office. Firmly shaking hands, we took a few moments to get caught up with each other’s lives and then it was time to dig into our interview. Lance Robertson is the CEO of Robertson Media Group,

specializing in Latino and Black American B2B Development. His company founded the National Black and Latino Council which is a networking platform bridging conversations and opportunities between the Black and Latino Business Communities. Robertson is a former high profile individual within Atlanta’s Dekalb County Government. He broke away from Government temporarily to venture out into private business. With a finger on the pulse of the economic and political climate of the City, Lance became fully aware of the growth of Atlanta’s Latino Community. This gave him an idea to create a collaborative platform where Business owners and Professionals could do big things together across ethnic and cultural lines. Already a well-connected Black Mogul and a savvy Networker, Lance reached out and had a discussion with an old friend who happens to be Latino; and The National Black and Latino Council was officially born. Started in 2005, Robertson serves as Executive Director and the organization has more than 2000 Members and 5 Chapters with expansion plans to include 17 other cities. NBLC’s current footprint includes Atlanta, New York, DC, Puerto Rico, The Virgin www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

gives you a way to keep your business moving forward. And the NBLC creates a platform for conversations, career moves, Partnerships and Joint Ventures. The majority of the organization’s small business owners are people simply trying to stay in business. Representing $2$5 million dollars in buying power, many belong to various Chambers of Commerce. But tend to find the NBLC to be a more intimate space. Last year in 2014, the NBLC held its largest Supplier Diversity Conference to date in Puerto Rico. Other similar events are also being planned out. Locally to their headquarters is the council’s premier networking event, Business & Baseball, held at Turner Field in Atlanta. Members and selected guests are given the VIP treatment prior to a Braves game. And opportunities to meet prominent decision makers abound. Membership is affordable and the different levels and benefits can be found on their website at www.BlackLatinoCouncil.org

Islands & Miami. And the organization has created a charter with The Tennessee Latin American Chamber of Commerce. Can you say….money is in the room! By bringing together the #1 Consumer Market (Latinos) and the #2 Consumer Market (Black Americans), Lance Robertson has essentially brokered the business deal of the century. NBLC has become one of those organizations that delivers on the goods. Members are largely Small Business Owners and other Entrepreneurs, but the organization also includes Executives from Fortune 500 Companies such as Coca-Cola. The current success of the National Black and Latino Council overshadows its humble beginnings. Robertson recalls that the first couple of years, the organization only had 5-6 people. It was started with no money and no budget. But with his consistency and continuous networking….the NBLC finally got a second wind and took off. This offers both a lesson in patience and staying in consistent alignment with your vision. Of course, Robertson refused to give up and the fruits of his commitment are starting to pay off. The benefits of joining the NBLC are numerous. The organization

Moguls Under 30:

Moziah Bridges The State of Black America is not as gruesome as some would paint in the mainstream media. This is why Publications like Black Moguls Magazine are necessary and relevant to the success movement in the community. The truth of the matter is that as Black CEOs and Entrepreneurs, we have carved out massive success in Entertainment, Music and ultimately the business world. There are over 75 black men and women on the list of the highest-ranking Executives in the country, of which 8 are Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Fortune 500 Companies. Where’s the breaking news on this? Entrepreneurship is the root of huge and sustainable success in today’s world. It is a known fact that, people who rule the world are Entrepreneurs who set up their own businesses, pulling all available local resources to become big. One fascinating thing about entrepreneurship is the fact that it is not age specific. There is no recommended age for you to start and build your own business; all you need is a dollar and a dream. And finding a Mentor will help cut down on much trial and error. This leads us to a conversation about Moziah Bridges. He is the CEO of Mo’s Bows; and is the quintessential Black Mogul Under 30 who started his company at the ripe old age of 9. Moziah plunged into the realm of creativity at a very early age when his peers were so keen about finishing up homework and playing football. Not that there is anything wrong with doing homework or playing sports. But I would advise you to read Mind Hustle by Publisher, Swan Simpson, available on Amazon. But again….we digress. Moziah learned how to sew from his grandmother and began to make his self-styled bow ties in 2011. Moziah Bridges has always been an aficionado of fine attire. Since the age of 4, he wore a suit and a bow tie at every opportunity and made sure he dressed on his own.

22 www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

“I like to wear bow ties, because they make me look good and feel good,” Bridges writes on his website. “Designing a colorful bow tie is just part of my vision to make the world a fun and happier place.” Moziah started making his variety of bow ties and selling them on his Facebook page & his Etsy store. Family and friends rallied around him to help him step up his production and so the young Mogul has grown even bigger. Bridges’ success has drawn media attention from around the country. He was recently featured on NBC’s Shark Tank with FUBU Fashion Guru, Daymond John. This year he has sold more than $200,000 worth of product and gives back to the community on a regular basis. The Young Mogul donated $1,600 to send 10 children from his hometown of Memphis, TN to Glenview Summer Camp. He has plans to go to college and start a full clothing line by the time he turns 20. Why not tap into your child’s creativity and make it a legacy of fortune? For more information on his line of dapper bows visit www.MosBowsMemphis.com

BILLIONAIRE LIFE LESSONS Swan Simpson

“Don’t Talk About It. Be About It.”

-Sean “Diddy” Combs

Some of my most favorite quotes of anyone still living today belong to my man, Sean Combs. In the world of Hip Hop, he is a musical legend. Yo, the sun don’t shine forever

You can turn the track up a little bit for me

These are lyrics from one of the best songs Diddy has ever Produced as an Artist and Performer in the music game. It’s a song that he performed with his best friend and Artist, the late, great Biggie Smalls…. still in my opinion the best Rapper to ever grace the industry. But how does a party promoting, college drop-out find himself in a very exclusive club reserved for the Super Rich? It’s the back story of Sean John Combs’ life that we at Black Moguls Magazine want to share with our readers. Nicknamed Puffy as a child because he would huff and puff when he got upset. In his professional career, he shifted the name around a bit to include Puff Daddy, P Diddy and now just Diddy.

But as long as it’s here then we might as well shine together

American Hustler, American Gangster and American Dream

All up in my ears

Sean grew up in the projects with a single Mother in Harlem New York. His Father was in the drug game and was killed when he was just 3 years old. Growing up with the influence of his Uncle, his Father’s brother….he first tried his hand at being an Entrepreneur at the ripe young age of 12. Diddy got himself a paper route and quickly found a way to leverage the one route

Better now than never, business before pleasure 26 www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

into 6. Seems like little Diddy learned the art of the deal at a very early age. While in College at Howard University he threw parties and made money as a side hustle before finding an Internship at the now defunct Uptown/MCA Records. A good side hustle based on your passion, can lead you down the path towards realizing some of your biggest dreams. For Diddy becoming an Intern was not about sitting back and making a paycheck. It was all about learning the game. The price of admission was your complete time and attention. Diddy eventually dropped out of college and pursued a career in music fulltime.

free throws, or Tiger Woods starting at the age of six, and getting up early or staying later than everybody. I feel in business, you know, I want to be the best in business that way. I want to stay in my office later. I want to stay in my studio and my design studio. When you look at the great ones, whether it’s the Bill Gates or Steve Jobs or Quincy Jones, Stephen Spielberg, they all have that in common, that they work hard. I’ve seen that, those times when you want to stop, or you want to quit, and you keep pushing your mind and you push your body to work harder, to stay up late, or to keep the passion up, you see the results of your hard work.”

Beginning as an Intern, he worked tireless hours running errands and tasks for zero pay. He was then finally promoted to A& R. A feud with company Executives quickly landed him a pink slip. Diddy got fired from his job, but remained focused on his dreams. Never the one to give up, he took his hustle and his dreams and started his own company Bad Boy Entertainment. Diddy started Bad Boy Entertainment out of his one bedroom apartment. Working 18 hour days in and out of the studio, he eventually signed Craig Mack and of course the Nortorious B.I.G aka Biggie Smalls to Bad Boy. Both Artists went on to achieve monumental success for his label. Mack hit the big time in mid 1994, winning a first platinum record for Bad Boy. B.I.G. notched the second at the beginning of 1995, with his own second hit, ‘Big Poppa’. Mack’s album ‘Project: Funk Da World’ eventually went gold, and Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘Ready to Die’ was certified double-platinum. ((((BOOM)))) the label was official and Diddy was now on the map in the game as his own man. Of course, the rumors and the drama of the music game begin to pay him a visit. His Artist, Biggie Smalls, got caught up in the middle of a feud with another label out West. And Sean suffered a major set-back with not only the loss of his label’s biggest Artist, but also the loss of his then best friend….Biggie Smalls. Over time the label has made him a very rich man. He has since expanded his Enterprise to include Television and Film, a very successful men’s clothing line, fragrance line and has been named One of the Riches Rappers in the business. His networth at last count is about a half billion dollars ($500,000,000). He is the CEO of Bad Boy Entertainment, Chairman of Combs Enterprises and employs more than 2000 people. Amid tragedy, personal loss, haters and numerous legal woes… Sean Combs has managed to use his business acumen to rise even further to the top. Here are some of his best practices and quotes he offers to those grinding on their rise to become Moguls. Young people today think that things are supposed to be handed to them on some kind of a platinum platter. They turn their noses up at starting out as an intern or from the bottom like you did. Any thoughts? “I feel like the true champions, they work the hardest. Whether it’s Michael Jordan staying in the gym to do a hundred thousand

Is there anything that Diddy is afraid of? Apparently he’s afraid of Clowns. Diddy Suffers from coulro phobia (fear of clowns), a condition so severe that he insisted on a “No Clowns” clause in his contract prior to appearing on Fear Factor. WOW! Every Mogul has a human side. Even the larger than life Sean John Combs. Diddy a lot of people dream. I love your quote don’t talk about it, be about it. How do you feel about people who have big dreams, but never seeing them through? “Don’t be afraid to close your eyes and dream, but then open your eyes and see.” “I was in one bedroom, dreaming about a million. Now I’m in beach houses, cream to the ceiling.” I love it. Seems like you’ve had plenty of obstacles and setbacks that could have caused you to break down, throw in the towel, cave-in and quit. What’s your advice for when things get really unbearable? “In good and bad times, we’ll always make it through.”-Sean Combs The fact of the matter is that no one can live your dreams better than you. Take it out of your head, put it on paper and stay the course until you see it through. Now is the time to be all about it. www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

MOGUL EATS

Yebo

My friend was at the bar happily indulging in a wonderful glass of grape. I had to give her a few minutes to guzzle down the last few drops before the Hostess seated us at our table. The menu boasts an incredible selection of small plates starting with appetizers then the main course and not to be forgotten is dessert. Try the red bean hummus for starters. It was amazing. During the main course, my friend ordered the lamb chops. I of course got the vegetable curry. I am still licking my lips thinking about the myriad of flavors they served up in that one bowl. The food is absolutely incredible. The atmosphere was perfect for meeting a group of friends on a Saturday night. The restaurant has the feel of an upscale lounge that serves world class cuisine. The music added to the experience. Yebo is also perfect for that weekday business meeting with upscale flair as it will say to your clients…..style, taste and class. For the weekend Mogul looking for a great spot to relax with your mate or wanting to impress a date, the weekend brunch is a must try.

It was a Saturday early evening and the place was poppin’ with sexy. The ultra-luxe Yebo (which means “yes” in South African), is a sexy new addition to Atlanta’s bustling Buckhead skyline. The restaurant sits inside of Phipps Plaza, which is the “six plus digit” income shopping central for Atlanta’s elite. I met a friend and we went IN on this place. I love South African food and wines (until I developed a sulfite allergy). Something about the food and the culture of this country just spells chic.

Social Mogul

Using Instagram To Promote Your Business by Marion Waldo (UK Correspondent) With the growing dependence on social media, every corporate organization should be finding a way to have the best networking presence online. From Facebook to Twitter, every social media app has marked its territory in the business world. However, Instagram is one of the top social media apps trending right now for business. This is because Instagram has launched the understated trend of using hash tags similar to that of Twitter but with photos. Instagram has given businesses the opportunity to take pictures of their products and goods and reveal them to their followers. Since the number of Instagram users is increasing by the hour, it isnow one of the best platforms for doing business. It can be seen how Instagram has given rise to the business of photos. With the advancing of smartphone technology, anyone with a phone can take great looking photos and images of their products, company and people to share with all in the world of social media. Instagram allows people to showcase their photo taking talents and add filters to their photos. By adding different filters to their pictures, the photographs become more interesting and fun to view. Instead of editing a picture elsewhere and uploading it through another social media app, why not edit and upload through Instagram alone? Instagram gives the opportunity to have fun with colors and filters. With the editing tools, you can create unconventional pictures and get the social chatter started about you. The Instagram app is free to download and free to use. This social media platform is one of the most underused by way of product launching and viral sharing and likes. To move the conversation forward with your existing followers or to get new people to start following you, insert a hash tag with your photos once you upload them and post them. This will optimizethem for searches and for social conversations along the Instagram path. If you do this, whenever someone searches for hash tags that are similar to yours, your photos and images will update on their news feed. Apart from that, Instagram lets you share photos without the need for words. The pictures themselves should say a thousand words.

My Closet Network Marketing Confessions and the Diamond Experience via Precia Turner

In 2006, I sat at the helm of Ziami as its VP of Business Development for North America. I grew Ziami Inc. from a 63 person inactive organization to a team of more than 2000 ACTIVE Independent Distributors in North America in about 6 months. Ziami sold custom clothing via Network Marketing in Europe, Asia and eventually North America where I controlled 100% of the market.

The Dalai Lama Says A Woman Rising From The West Will Change This World. Ladies it is our time!

We only had a handful of marginally successful individual Distributors in North America because the concept of custom clothing selling this way was unfathomable.

From the Corporate side, I understand the inner-workings of a successful launch. And the success of Ziami Worldwide was unprecedented. Our Distributors in Europe were extremely successful and very well paid. And most drove a fleet of Range Rovers and BMWs. It felt good seeing those checks being paid and cars being ordered.Ziami eventually became the #1 Custom Shirting Company in Europe with thousands of Independent Distributors earning the bulk of that income in Europe alone.

Celebrities like 112, Tony Terry and Comedian Anthony Anderson were draped in Ziami. Our market was clear and our message was focused. And that’s the key to winning in the networking game. Selling the vision and the dream!

In the U.S. our success was a little different. Getting people to actually work was the biggest challenge. Because Ziami was a new concept, people questioned its potential. And as Ziami’s only and highest ranking Black Woman, I had the typical push back from other Black people who exhibit the crabs in the barrel mentality. Most thought I was an employee working for the man. And when they were not satisfied with the rules of engagement that I laid down, they thought they could go around me and tell Massa on me. Let Your Haters Be Your Motivators!

Blue Prints Are Keys To The Kingdom Let’s be real. What other vehicle in the history of American Business has created more Black Millionaires than Network Marketing? None. This is why I’ve endorsed it in the past AND it is also why I am rejoining the industry today. If you follow the Leaders and you create your own momentum and you plug into the systems….over time…… it works. You don’t have to guess….but you do need to be consistent.

Playing On The Beach Is Money In The Bank I must admit, I love what one Network Marketing company, Paycation, is doing. And Precia Turner is proof that they have a similar potential system of success as Ziami, except I get to vacation for pay. Precia is a 23 year old single mother who had

no choice but to get it done. Nobody was going to take care of her and her son. Sometimes when your back is against the wall, you have no choice but to find what works!

WHY Becoming A Millionaire Just Got REAL Precia found herself broke and with nothing to lose. She joined the company on January 2, 2015. And in 35 days, hit National Director placing her in the top 10% of income earners in the company. I love it! She was able to walk away from her full-time job and focus on her lifetime dreams. 23 years old and the dream is real! Precia is hungry for it and is helping so many others live their dreams. It a 23 year old, broke, single mother given very few options by society’s standards can do it…..you can do it! It’s what I believe this life and our community should be about. Supporting, loving and building wealth together cooperatively. “Network Marketing is cooperative economics on steroids. And the sooner you buy into this proven concept, the sooner you can get off of whatever grind you are on.” - Swan Simpson, CEO Swan Simpson Media Group I have never been this excited about an outside opportunity since Ziami. And I made a fabulous income with Ziami including a $1000 monthly car bonus as an Executive.

Join A Wealth Of Proven Success www.CatchTheVision.Paycation.com Paycation is all about that Diamond Life and I am looking for a few serious people to join my Retire Rich Team. If you are SERIOUS send me a personal email to CEO.SSMEDIAGROUP@GMAIL.COM and tell me why you would like to Partner with me and we will plug you into our system of proven success. I will personally answer your email with more details…… www.BlackMogulsMagazine.com

“ You have to believe that you are the one who creates your success, you are the one who creates your mediocrity and you are the one creating your struggle around money. Consciously or unconsciously, it’s still you.” - T. Harv Eker Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get what they want in life while others always seem to struggle? Or put another way; do you know why most people don’t get what they want? The hard truth is that it’s because they don’t know what they want. But clarity can give you so much power.

Let’s get clear. The Millionaire Mind Intensive is a weekend seminar that is based on the simple premise that success is a learnable skill. But, you still need a plan and the right tools. At the Millionaire Mind Intensive you’ll: • Learn five Freedom Factors. • Win the “money game” and get on the path to financial freedom. • Master the world’s easiest and most effective money management method. • Make money while you sleep with massive, passive income. • Master money and relationships with spouses, business associates and kids. • Recondition yourself for automatic success. Once you know where you’re going, you’ll be able to develop a plan to get there. And you’ll create that plan, right there, on the spot at the Millionaire Mind Intensive.

Begin where you are. You don’t have to make millions right NOW, but if you ever want to achieve success with money you DO need to start now. And we’ll show you why right now, in this very economy, may actually be the best time of your entire life to get started.

“I have never experienced such a mind-altering breakthrough in my entire life - I can honestly say I’m leaving here practically fearless! My appreciation for all that is given to the quality of this seminar is immense - it was totally amazing. I know I will succeed in everything I desire. Thank you with all my heart and soul!”

R.A.M Foundation Scholarship Rebuilding African Minds is all about the re-education of our community towards economic development and prosperity.

An End To Personal Struggles Is In Sight The R.A.M Foundation realizes that our community continues to suffer largely due to poor choices, social ills such as mass incarceration and homelessness along with the inability to get unstuck from the political games played in the greater society. It would seem that many in the community have become a permanent under-class; a life-long victim class that may never realize its fullest potential unless we use our gifts to intervene.

Being A Part Of The Solution The R.A.M Foundation wants to disrupt the trends of poverty in our communities by offering opportunities to those who have found themselves recently released from incarceration or presently residing in a transitional center (half-way house). Upon release from the system, it is often difficult to become acclimated and productive because of how you are perceived by society. Something as simple as a job flipping burgers can become an impossibility. You’ve done your time. You have shown you can be trusted. You deserve an opportunity to prove yourself. But you gotta be hungry!

There Is No Free Lunch. You Gotta Earn It. If you have ever dreamed of becoming an Entrepreneur and taking charge of your own life upon re-entry into the greater society, we would love to get to know you. We are offering Entrepreneurial Scholarships to a select few individuals who can demonstrate their hunger for success and their thirst for changing their lives. It takes effort on your part. We aren’t going to give you a job. We are giving you an opportunity to take your life back and to create a new life for yourself and your family.

Apply Yourself We hope you are as excited as we are about meeting you. Surrounding yourself with good vibes and good people is only the beginning. Learning new things and pushing yourself beyond the limits of your own mind. If you feel that you qualify or know someone who does, visit our website www.RAMTechnologyPartners.com for more information and to apply.
