THE PROJECT PROGRAM IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR MAIN FLOORS EACH CONTAINS DIFFERENT FUNCTION. THE FLOATING FLOOR ABOVE THE GROUND LEVEL IS THE ONLY VOLUME VISIBLE THROUGH THE CITY WHICH CREATES A CULTURAL LANDMARK IN THE AREA AND IT FUNCTION AS AN EXHIBITIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL FLOOR. WHILE THE LOWER VOLUME CONTAINS THREE LEVELS THE FIRST ONE IS FOR RESEARCH, THE SECOND CONTAINS WORKING SPACES, AND THE LOWEST IS AN OPEN FLOOR CONNECTED DIRECTLY WITH THE CULTURE PLAZA AND THIS ONE IS A FREE LEVEL OF INTERACTION, RELAXING, AND EXERCISING, WHICH COULD BE ACCESSIBLE BY THE PUBLIC. IN THE SAME TIME ALL THE INTERIOR SPACES INSIDE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS ARE FLEXIBLE AND INTERCONNECTED THROUGH A SIMPLE OPEN PLAN THAT IS HUMAN-ORIENTED WHICH COULD CREATE OPEN AND FREEDOM MODERN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS CAPABLE OF COPING WITH THE UNION FUTURE EVOLUTION OF INSTANT INFORMATION SPREAD, STRONG INTERACTION, AND ENHANCING INNOVATION AMONG THE YOUNG TALENTS. A DYNAMIC RAMP CONNECTS THE INTERIOR SPACES IN DIFFERENT LEVELS WITH EACH OTHER AS IT PROVIDES A DIRECT CONNECTION WITH THE CULTURAL PLAZA CREATING A SPECIAL INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE BETWEEN PEOPLE WORKING INSIDE AND THE OUTER COMMUNITY THROUGH A TRANSPARENT GLASS FACADE.

UPSIDE DOWN Reviving NPAK Yerevan, Armenia 2019

THE DESIGN ASPIRES TO PROVIDE THE CITY OF YEREVAN A NEW INTERACTIVE ENVIRONMENT THAT IS ACCESSIBLE FOR THE PUBLIC AND THE ART COMMUNITY WITHIN A CONTEXTUAL ENVELOPE, NARRATING A NEW CHAPTER FOR THE CITY WITHOUT FORGETTING WHAT HAVE BEEN BEFORE. THE PRINCIPAL ACT THAT WAS DONE IS CREATING TWO OPPOSITE LAYERS OF STEPPED TERRACES THAT PROVIDE A HARMONIC DIALOGUE WITH THE EXISTING BUILDING, THE FIRST ONE IS SLOPED DOWNSIDE CREATING A STEPPED PLAZA THAT LEADS TO A CULTURAL ENTRANCE AT THE EXISTING BASEMENT LEVEL WITH A NEW GLASS FAÇADE THAT INVITES PEOPLE IN, AND THIS WILL SIMPLIFY CONNECTIVITY AND CIRCULATION THROUGH THE BUILDING, WHILE THE EXISTING STONE FAÇADE WILL BE FLOATING ABOVE MARKING THE HISTORICAL LAYER OF NPAK. THE SECOND ONE IS SLOPED TOWARD UPSIDE CREATING A STEPPED SCULPTURE GARDEN THAT PROVIDE A NEW SENSE OF DYNAMIC INTERACTION BETWEEN THE CITY AND THE DESIGN COMMUNITY, LEADING TO A COMMUNAL TERRACE ABOVE THE EXISTING SHORTER SIDE OF THE BUILDING THAT TERRACE WILL CREATE A NEW PUBLIC ENTRY POINT TO THE PROJECT SEPARATING THE CULTURAL ENTRANCE FROM THE PUBLIC ENTRANCE. ALL THE STEPPED TERRACES ARE CONNECTED VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY TO VERNISSAGE FLEA MARKET THAT DEFINES THE MOST DOMINANT CONTEXTUAL FORCE AROUND THE SITE WHICH WILL LEAD TO MORE CROWD FLOW INSIDE THE BUILDING AND MORE COMMUNICATION AND INTERACTION BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES.

BY REINFORCING THE EXISTING STRUCTURE, THE DESIGN IS AIMING TO KEEP THE ORIGINAL LAYOUT AND THE VISUAL IDENTITY OF THE BUILDING. THE DESIGN INTRODUCES THREE NEW FLOORS INSIDE THE ABOVE TRIPLE HEIGHT SPACE PROVIDING MORE FUNCTIONS AND SPACES INSIDE WITHOUT ADDING ADDITIONAL VOLUMES THAT COULD DESTROY THE CONTEXTUAL IMAGE, AS IT ALSO PROPOSED TO ADD A GLASS COURTYARD PENETRATING ALL THE FLOORS FOLLOWING THE EXISTING STRUCTURE WHICH WILL PROVIDE LIGHTING AND AIR VENTILATION INSIDE THE INTERIOR SPACES WITHOUT THE NEED TO ADD TOO MANY OPENINGS ON THE EXTERIOR SKIN. THE BIG CIRCULAR WINDOW ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE PROJECT IS PROPOSED TO BE KEPT AS AN ICON FOR NPAK BUILDING MODIFYING THE SLABS ATTACHED TO IT, TO CREATE AN EXHIBITIONAL TRIPLE HEIGHT SPACE FACING THE WINDOW.

THE PROJECT PROGRAM IS DIVIDED INTO SIX FLOORS EACH CONTAINS DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND ACTIVITIES; THE LOWER THREE FLOORS ARE ACCESSIBLE DIRECTLY FROM THE CULTURAL ENTRANCE BELOW AND THIS LEVELS CONTAINS CULTURAL, ARTISTIC AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. WHILE THE UPPER THREE FLOOR IS ACCESSIBLE THROUGH THE PUBLIC ENTRANCE ABOVE AND THESE ONES CONTAINS WORKING, RESIDENTS, AND COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES. IN THE SAME TIME ALL THE INTERIOR SPACES INSIDE THE DIFFERENT LEVELS ARE FLEXIBLE AND INTERCONNECTED THROUGH A SIMPLE OPEN PLAN THAT IS HUMAN-ORIENTED WHICH COULD CREATE OPEN AND FREEDOM MODERN ENVIRONMENT OF SHARING AND INTERACTING. IT IS ALSO PROPOSED TO ADD A NEW THEATER BELOW THE UPSIDE LANDSCAPE STEPS WHICH WILL BE ACCESSIBLE FROM THE LOWER LEVELS AND WILL SERVE AS A PRODUCTION PLATFORM FOR NPAK COMMUNITY.

“The principal act that was done is creating two opposite layers of stepped terraces that provide a harmonic dialogue with the existing building”

“narrating a new chapter for the city without forgetting what have been before

THE PROJECTREPRESENTS A NEWARCHITECTURE PARADIGM, JUST LIKE EVERY NEW CHALLENGING INTERVENTION. OUR PROPOSAL IS AN ICONIC LIGHTHOUSE, BUT ALSO AN INNOVATIVE ARCHITECTURE THAT IS MORE THAN A LANDMARK, ABLE TO CREATE NEW MAGNETISMS AND NARRATIVES WITHIN THE CITY SCHEME. WITH THE AIM OF THINKING OF A PROJECT NOT LIMITED IN FUNCTION, WE WANT TO STIMULATE ITS SPHERE OF INTERVENTION. HERE IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRIGGER NEW STIMULI IN A DIFFICULT COLLECTIVE ENVIRONMENTS, SO AS TO BE ABLE TO INCORPORATE THE VARIOUS FRAGMENTS INTO A UNIT OF EVENTS. THE NEW FORM IS ABSORBING VARIOUS COMPLEXITIES AND TRANSFORMING THEM AS THE NEW ENRICHED IDENTITY, USEFUL TO REGENERATE AND LEAD THE GROWING CITY NEIGHBORHOOD.

THE PROPOSAL IS A SHARED ECOSYSTEM THAT ENABLES A CONVERSATION BETWEEN MANY DIFFERENT FIELDS OF CULTURE, A GREAT MEETING POINT OF MANY PROFESSIONISTS AND INTERESTS. IT’S A PLACE WHICH INVITES AND DRAWS TOGETHER BOTH ARTISTS, VISITORS AND THE COMMUNITY OF BANJA LUKA TO MEET WITH THE MEAN OF ARCHITECTURE, CULTURE, KNOWLEDGE, MUSIC AND NATURE.MOREOVER, THE DESIGN REFLECTS THE GOAL TO FORECAST MORE IMPULSES AND A VIBRANT ATTITUDE IN THE LONG TERM PLANNING. MANY FLEXIBLE OPEN SPACES ARE AVALABLE TO BE ADEQUATE WITH REVERSABLE AND TEMPORARY SETTINGS, EASY TO ASSEMBLE AND DISASSEMBLE, QUICKLY INTERCHANGEABLE DURING TIME ACCORDING TO THE DIFFERENT EVENTS AND TOPICS HOSTED IN THE BUILDING. THIS STRATEGY WOULD PROMOTE AGILE MOVEMENTS, ALSO ENTERING INTO LINE WITH PREVAILING ARTISTIC OR EVEN ECONOMIC POLICIES THAT STIMULATE INNOVATION OR RATHERNOVELTY, IN A PROCESS OF CONTINUOUS IMPROVMENT.ACTIVATING THE SURROUNDING: HE SITE AREA HAS AN IMPORTANT VALUE FOR BANJA LUKA, AS LONG AS HISTORICALLY, IT HAS ALWAYS COVERED AN IMPORTANT STRATEGIC POINT IN THE CITY. IN FACT, DURING THE PAST CENTURIES THE AREA HAVE BEEN HOSTING A MILITAR BASE AND HAD MANY GREEN PARKS SOME OF WHICH HAVE BEEN PRESERVED BY THE PRESENT TIME.

THE INTERACTION EMPHASIZES THE CONTEXTUAL CHARACTER OF THE APPROACH, WORKING ON AN URBAN MACRO-SCALE OF THE PRESENT BUT ALSO OF ITS PAST SIGNS, ATTEMPTING TO SEE THOSE PREVIOUSLY CUT AND IMPRACTICABLE RELATIONSHIPS, STARTING FROM THE PROMISE OF NEW HYBRID ENVIRONMENTS. EACH INTERVATION IS RELATED TO THE SURROUNDING URBAN LANDSCAPE, INDEED TAKING LIFE FROM IT AND MAKING THE FAVOR IN THE FORM OF REGENERATION AND ATTRACTIVENESS. FURTHERMORE COMMON LIGHTS, IS A CHALLANGING OPPORTUNITY TO REDISCOVER THE POTENTIALITY OF A NEW ATTRACTIVE CONSTRUCTION. IT ELIMINATES THE PHYSICAL LIMITS AND ANY KIND OF SEPARATION AT URBAN SOCIAL LIFE LEVEL. AMBIGUOUS SPATIAL ANTIDOTES AGAINST THE FORM OF A PRETERMINATED CITY, WHICH OPEN UP TO NEW WAYS OF THINKING AND USING THE PUBLIC ENVIRONMENT. THESE POROUS ENVIRONMENTS ALLOW A FAST AND RAPID INTENSITY OF EXCHANGE BETWEEN ACTIONS, FUNCTIONS AND USERS AND GIVE ENDLESS SHADES TO THE CLASSIC TYPE OF PUBLIC SPACES. NEW SOCIAL BENEFITS: THEPROJECT GIVES THE OPPORTUNITY TO THE INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE A FULL SOCIAL AND CULTURAL LIFE, AT THE SAME TIME IT PROVIDES AN UNIQUE EXPERIENCE OF CONTEMPORARY SPATIALITY, MATERIAL SENSE AND CULTURAL ATMOSPHERE IN ORDER TO BE COMPETENT INTERPRETERS OF THEIR TIME.THE OPERA HOUSE SHOULD ESTABLISH THE CONDITIONS OF FRUITFUL NARRATIVES.

LIGHTWELLS

This is a novel proposal that presents some very dramatic possibilities for interaction with the surrounding community and context. The design considers the heritage and local culture, and its clearness is admirable. The simplicity of the cube and plaza below creates a calm reflective space embedded in the geology and culture. Competition Jury

THE FLOATING VOLUME IS PERFORATED WITH A SERIES OF LIGHTWELLS TO CREATE A NATURAL, ILLUMINATED INTERIOR FURTHER LIT BY SQUARE SHAPED GLAZED INTROVERTED FAÇADE, AS SUCH ALSO PROVIDING THE CULTURAL PLAZA BELOW WITH CENTERS OF NATURAL LIGHT AND AIR VENTILATION. SO IN A WAY THIS FLOATING PERFORATED VOLUME WILL WORK AS A CONTEMPORARY URBAN “SAQIFAH” FOR THE CULTURAL PLAZA. AND “SAQIFAH” IS A TRADITIONAL ARABIC LATTICED SHED STRUCTURE THAT WAS USED WIDELY FOR GATHERINGS AND EVENTS IN ARABIAN GULF.

As a cultural plaza with a central public space, the design offers an attractive and inviting area for meetings, community building, temporary events and performances. This intervention under the raised volume of the museum is a strong statement, and the sloping ground level takes on the character of an amphitheatre. The patios further act as lightwells, and bring daylight into the lower domain. Through these patios, a glimpse of the exhibition space can be seen from below – a wonderful contrast to the hermetically sealed outer façade of the lifted box, and a powerful and beautiful field of tension. Competition Jury

THE MUSEUM PROGRAM IS ARRANGED WITHIN THE ELEVATED VOLUME WHICH IS DEFINED BY A CONTEMPORARY OPEN PLAN THAT IS HUMAN ORIENTED CREATING AN INTERACTIVE CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS BENEFITING FROM THE PLAY OF LIGHT AND SHADOW CREATED BY THE LIGHWELLS IN THE DIFFERENT EXHIBITION SPACES.

THE DESIGN FOR HOPE DENTAL CENTER ASPIRES TO CREATE A SERIES OF TERRACED BUILDINGS THAT IS ADAPTABLE, INTERACTIVE, AND ACCESSIBLE FOR THE COMMUNITY IN KIGALI. LOOKING AT THE NATURAL SLOPPED TOPOGRAPHY OF THE SITE, WE DECIDED TO CREATE A DESIGN THAT RESPECTS THE SURROUNDING AND THE EXISTING GREENERY AS IF IT WAS ALREADY A PART OF THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY OF THE SITE. THE PRINCIPAL ACT THAT WAS DONE THROUGH THE DESIGN IS TO CREATE CONTINUES STEPS THAT FOLLOWS THE EXISTING TOPOGRAPHY TO ALLOW AN EASY ACCESSIBILITY THROUGH AND TO THE SITE, WITHIN THIS STEPS THE VOLUMES OF THE DENTAL CENTER ARE EXITING AS A CONTINUATION WITH VARIOUS SCALES FOLLOWING THE REQUIRED PROGRAMS. WATERMARKS 17th La Biennale Di Venezia Venice, Italy 2019

WITHIN THE DARKNESS OF THE ANTHROPOCENE AGE WE ARE LIVING.. THERE ARE THE WATERMARKS A TINY GLIMPSES OF LIGHT THAT IS FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, AND TO PROVIDE A BETTER EARTH WHERE BIO-DIVERSITY AND HUMANITY CAN BOTH EXIST IN HARMONY. HUMANKIND ARE THE ACTORS IN AN ERA OF ACCELERATED PLANETARY CRISIS WHICH HAS RECENTLY EARNED ITSELF A NEW GEOLOGICAL EPOCH CALLED THE ANTHROPOCENE. BASED ON THE OVERWHELMING EVIDENCE THAT HUMAN ACTIVITY HAS MARKED ITSELF AS A MAJOR FORCE OF NATURE. IN THIS NEW ERA WE SEES UNPRECEDENTED LAND DEGRADATION, AND THE LOSS OF ARABLE LAND AT 30 TO 35 TIMES THE HISTORICAL RATE. DROUGHT AND DESERTIFICATION IS ALSO ON THE RISE EACH YEAR, AMOUNTING TO THE LOSS OF 12 MILLION HECTARES AND AFFECTS POOR COMMUNITIES GLOBALLY. EGYPT IS WITNESSING A HUGE LOSS OF ITS BIODIVERSITY, ABOUT 95 SPECIES OF PLANTS, INSECTS, BIRDS AND ANIMAL ARE IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION DUE TO THE RAPID URBANIZATION THAT IS TAKING OVER THE AGRICULTURAL LANDS, THE DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES, OVERCONSUMPTION, AND THE USE OF TECHNOLOGIES THAT DAMAGE THE ENVIRONMENT, NOW COMBINED WITH CLIMATE CHANGE, ARE PUSHING OUR COUNTRY AND OUR PLANET TO ITS LIMITS. IN THE EGYPTIAN PAVLION WE ARE SHOWCASING THE DANGERS THAT IS FACING OUR PLANET AND THE GOOD WATERMARKS THAT HUMANITY IS PUTTING ON EARTH FACING THIS CHALLENGES REFLECTED WITHIN THE BOUNDARY OF THE EGYPTIAN LAND. SHOWING SIGNS OF THE UNCERTAIN FUTURE OR THE BETTER FUTURE BASED ON PEOPLE ACTIONS. THE PAVILION IS A SHOWCASE TO THE CONTRIBUTIONS AIMING TO THE BALANCE OF ECOLOGICAL DIVERSITY IN EGYPT, TO CONTROL THE EXPANSION OF THE LAND, AND TO INTRODUCE NATURE INTO THE CITY, CREATING A NEW SYMBIOTIC URBAN ENVIRONMENT. THE PAVILION AIMS TO SHOW WHAT IS IN DANGER AND HOW WE CAN SURVIVE TOGETHER HUMANITY AND BIODIVERSITY.

WITHIN THE DARKNESS OF THE ANTHROPOCENE AGE WE ARE LIVING.. THERE ARE THE WATERMARKS A TINY GLIMPSES OF LIGHT THAT IS FIGHTING TO SURVIVE, AND TO PROVIDE A BETTER EARTH WHERE BIODIVERSITY AND HUMANITY CAN BOTH EXIST IN HARMONY.

THE VISITORS OF THE PAVILION WILL GO THROUGH A JOURNEY OF EXPLORATION INSIDE THIS ANTHROPOCENE ENVIRONMENT AS SOME OF THE PROJECTS CONTENT WILL BE PRESENTED INSIDE THE STEEL MESHES, IT WILL DRIVE THE VISITORS TO WONDER AND TO KEEP THEM INTERESTED. THE SMALL SCALE OF THESE PLATES IS A SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATION TO SHOW THE DOMINATION OF THE ANTHROPOCENE EFFECT IN COMPARE TO THE GOOD HUMAN CONTRIBUTIONS NOWADAYS

THE WATERMARKS ARE THE PROJECTS THAT IS BASED ON THE IDEA OF IMPLEMENTIG CLEAN AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGIES, PROVIDING ALL FACILITIES WITH CLEAN ENERGY, WHILE MINIMIZING WASTE AND GRANTING A FAIR USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES. A DIRECT ANSWER TO THE ANTHROPOCENE PROBLEMS. THE CASE STUDIES THAT WERE EXAMINED TO REPRESENT THE GOOD WATERMARKS IN EGYPT WERE DONE SO WITH THE INTENTION OF RESEARCHING HOW DIFFERENT PLACES ARE REACTING AND RESPONDING TO THE EFFECTS OF ANTHROPOCENIC CLIMATE RELATED PHENOMENA (I.E. LOSS OF HABITAT, SCARCITY OF FARMABLE LAND FROM OVERGRAZING, SPECIES EXTINCTION, AND INDUSTRIAL SCARS). WHAT THE SELECTED CASE STUDIES WILL TELL US IS THAT DESIGNING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE COMES IN MANY DIFFERENT FORMS, DEPENDING ON THE SYMPTOM, THE GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, AND NEEDS BASED ON RISKS. SOME PROJECTS AIM TO CONSERVE OR PRESERVE NATURAL HABITS, WHILE OTHERS RESPOND BY ADAPTIVE REUSE OF OLD AND OUTDATED INDUSTRIAL WASTELANDS. AND THESE ARE THE KIND OF THE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT WE WILL PRESENT IN OUR PAVILION

THE PAVILION WANTS TO LEAVE A MESSAGE. OUR DESTINY IS IN OUR HANDS AND IT WILL BE THE RESULTS OF OUR ACTIONS. THESE POSTCARDS WANTS TO WARN ABOUT A FUTURE THAT WE THINK IS FAR AWAY , BUT ALWAYS CLOSER. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO BE, START WITH YOUR WATERMARK.

THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO ESTABLISH A CONNECTION WITH THE PAST TRADITION OF THE COMMUNITY AND TO BE CONTEXT-SENSITIVE. THE WATER CONNECTION AND THE INTEGRATION OF THE TRADITIONAL WAY OF LIVING IN THIS PLACE MIXED WITH THE TRADITIONAL MATERIAL FROM THE AREA HAD A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. THIS AREA ONCE RICH WITH WATER AND LIFE, NOW DEVOID OF ITS MOST PECULIAR CONNOTATIONS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO RECONNECT THE RELATIONSHIP OF DAILY LIFE WITH WATER AND BRING THIS CONNECTION TO THE PRESENT DAY WITHOUT NEGLECTING TRADITION. THE DESIGN MAKES THE SCHOOL A PIVOT POINT BETWEEN LAND AND WATER WITH INTRODUCING A SMALL HARBOR THAT COULD HELP THE VILLAGES AROUND TO REACH THIS PLACE THROUGH THE COMPLEX SYSTEM OF MARSHES WATERWAYS. THE SITE RESULTS DEVIDED IN TWO AREAS AND ALLOWS THE COMUNITY TO DEVELOP RHYTHMICALLY THEIR ACTIVITIES AND DAILY RITUALS. CONTEMPORARY CITIES ARE AIMING TO DEAL WITH ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN HERITAGE AS A VITAL ENTITY THAT CAN ADAPT TO THE MODERN LIFE STYLE AND NEEDS WITHOUT SACRIFICING THE REGION’S IDENTITY AND UNIQUENESS, ESPECIALLY THOSE CITIES THAT ARE HISTORICALLY AND CULTURALLY PROFOUND, WHICH HAS RESULTED IN THE POSSESSION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN HERITAGE. MANY ISLAMIC CITIES WORLDWIDE ARE PROUD OF THEIR TRADITIONAL MARKETS. THE MARKET IN ISLAMIC CITIES HAS REVIVED THE CITY THROUGH ITS PRESENCE, WHILE THE CITY HAS FORMED THE MARKET ACCORDING TO ITS NEEDS. THE BUILDING DOES NOT WANT TO BE A CUMBERSOME PRESENCE IN THE CITY, RATHER IT WANTS TO BE A CENTER WHERE PEOPLE CAN MEET, EXCHANGE IDEAS AND OPINIONS ON THE MOST MODERN DESIGN THEMES. THE GOAL IS TO ALLOW A GRADUAL TRANSITION BETWEEN A CITY SO RICH IN TRADITIONS, HISTORY, CULTURE AND CUSTOMS WITH THE MOST MODERN TECHNOLOGIES AND DESIGN THAT COULD BE EXHIBITED INSIDE. MAINLY USING AS A VERNACULAR ELEMENT OF THE PROJECT THE TENT OFTEN USED IN THE MARKETS, AS A SHELTER TO MITIGATE THE INTENSITY OF THE SUN.

A SPECIAL PREROGATIVE IS TO ALLOW PEOPLE TO USE, AS IT IS STILL USED, THE SPACE DELIMITED BY THE WALLS OF THE BUILDING AS A MEETING POINT FOR CITIZENS. THE BUILDING DETACHES FROM THE GROUND A FEW METERS TO LEAVE THE GROUND FLOOR A LARGE OPEN SPACE WHERE THERE MAY BE EXHIBITIONS, EVENTS OR SIMPLY WHERE YOU CAN LAZE AND STOP FROM THE INTENSE RHYTHMS OF THE CITY. BILLOW GLOWS IN THE BEAUTIFUL SANDY SKY OF BAGHDAD. ITS ROOTS ARE WITHIN THE GROUND BUT IT KEEPS FLAYING, DANC-ING WITH THE WARM WINDS, CREATING A FLOATING MINARET THAT GUIDES PEOPLE TO A NEW ERA OF THE HISTORICAL CITY.

HUNDREDS OF TRANSLUCENT TENSILE CUR-TAINS ARE WHAT DEFINES THE OUTER SKIN FOR THE PROJECT A WOODEN STRUCTURE IS FRAMING THE CURTAINS AS IT RAISES ABOVE THE EXISTING OLD FACADE, THIS SKIN ALLOWS A GRADUAL TRANSITION BETWEEN A CITY SO RICH IN TRADITIONS, HISTORY CUL-TURE AND CUSTOMS WITH THE MOST MODERN TECHNOLOGIES AND DESIGN THAT COULD BE EXHIBITED INSIDE.

A GLASS CORE INSIDE THE TENSILE SKIN DEFINES THE INDOOR SPACE FOR THE DESIGN CENTER WHERE DIFFERENT WORKING AND EXHIBITION ACTIVITIES TAKE PLACE, THE CURTAINS COVERS THE CORE AS IT PRO-TECT IT FROM THE DIRECT SUN LIGHT BUT AL-LOWES ENOUGH DAYLIGHT TO LIGHTEN THE SPACE UP. THE CORE DETACHES FROM THE GROUND A FEW METERS TO LEAVE THE GROUND FLOOR A LARGE OPEN SPACE WHERE THERE MAY BE EXHIBITIONS, EVENTS OR SIMPLY WHERE YOU CAN LAZE AND STOP FROM THE IN-TENSE RHYTHMS OF THE CITY.

WRITTEN National Museum of World Writing Songdo, Korea 2017

THE PROJECT IS A DIALOGUE BETWEEN A CITY, A PARK AND A WRITING MUSEUM AS THE MUSEUM IS MOSTLY BURIED WITHIN THE PARK A FLOATING TRANSLUCENT PAPER IS SHELTERING INTRODUCING NEW MEANS OF PERCEPTION TO THE COMMUNITY OF SONGDO AS IT BENDS UP AND DOWN IT DELIVERS DIFFERENT MESSAGES TO THE CITY. THE SUN ACTS AS THE INK THAT CREATES DIFFERENT MEDIUMS FOR INTERACTION BY PASSING THROUGH THE ENGRAVINGS EMBEDDED WITHIN THE LEAFLET. DELIVERING WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED AND WHAT IS YET TO OCCUR. AS THE SUN IS CONTINUALLY MOVING, NEW MEANINGS AND DIMENSIONS ARE CONSTANTLY REVEALED THROUGH THE LEAFLET TELLING ITS OWN STORY THROUGH WORDS AND INTENSITY.

CREATING AN EVERYDAY DIALOGUE THROUGH THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS, USERS OF THE MUSEUM AND THE EVERYDAY STREET/PARK PASSENGERS. AFFECTED BY TWO OPPOSING FORCES WITHIN THE CITY, THE EXISTING MANMADE STRUCTURES AND THE FLUIDIC NATURE OF THE PARK. FLEXIBLE/SHAPEABLE , ACTING AS A RESPONSIVE MEDIUM AND TRANSLUCENT, LIKEWISE A PIECE OF FABRIC; THE PROJECT SHELTERS THE PARK WITH A LEAFLET THAT GIVES NEW HORIZONS TO THE COMMUNITY OF SONGDO. THIS MUSEUM WILL EMBRACE THE VISITOR AS AN INITIATE, A SEEKER AND AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT, IN THIS GRAND DANCE OF ANCIENT KNOWLEDGE, ACTS AND OBJECTS. WE SHOULD CREATE A MUSEUM THAT DREDGES UP OUR PRESENT CONNECTION TO THE TIMELESS SIGNS AND SYMBOLS. IT IS TIME FOR THE NEW WORLD ORDER TO CALL UPON TO EVOKE AND TO LEARN FROM – THE OLD WORLD WISDOMS

INSIDE THE BOX Isola Pepe Verde’s playground Milan, Italy 2018

THE DESIGN IS AIMING TO RE-ORGANISE THE ISOLA PEPE VERDE SPACE ENTIRELY, CREATING A NEW SPACE THAT IS FLEXIBLE, DYNAMIC, AND SUSTAINABLE. INSPIRED BY THE THE THEMES OF THE IMAGINATION FOR THE CHILDREN AND HOW A CHILD ACTIVITY CAN DEFINES THE SPACE OF A PLAYGROUND. THE DESIGN IS DEFINED BY A SERIES OF SIMPLE CUBIC STRUCTURES THAT IS INTERACTIVE AND TRANSFORMATIVE. A RECTANGLEUR PLAZA IS ACTINGE LIKE A “RADURA” IN THE CENTER OF THE ISOLA PEPE GARDEN, THROUGH THIS PLAZA THERE ARE THREE LANES OF NARROW RAILS THAT ALLOWS THE CUBIC STRUCTURE TO MOVE ABOVE CREATING DIFFERENT SCENARIOS AND ACTIVITIES. A PLAYGROUND FOR KIDS, A MARKET, A CINEMA, A SHELTER FOR ECO BOXES IS SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT COULD BE OCCURRING IN THE PLAZA BASED ON THE ORGANIZATION AND THE INSTALLATION OF THE CUBES. LIKE CHILDREN PLAYING WITH BASIC GEOMETRICAL FORMS THE PEOPLE FROM THE NEIGHBORHOOD CAN CREATE PLENTY OF DIFFENT SOLUTIONS FOLLOWING THEIR NEEDS. A PROMINENT FEATURE OF OUR INTERVENTION IS THAT IS FOCUSED ON A SMALL-SCALE APPROACH, SO ABLE TO CONNECT PEOPLE WITH THE ENVIRONMENT. THE IMPACT THAT AN INTERVENTION MAKES IS IMPORTANT. THEREFORE BIG PHYSICAL CHANGES MIGHT ENCOMPASS PROJECTS THAT ARE IRRELEVANT. WITH SMALL PINPRICKS, AS REGENERATION OF THE URBAN SPACE ITʼS POSSIBLE TO HAVE A BIGGER IMPACT. ENHANCING THE UNIQUE QUALITIES OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD TO AVOID CLASHES OF INCOMPATIBLE ACTIVITIES WE DEVIDED THE PHASES IN THREE STAGES.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS URBAN SPACE COULD STIMULATE APPROPRIATION AND MANIPULATION OF ITS FABRIC, SYMBOLS AND LANGUAGE BY ITS INHABITANTS. MAKE AN URBAN SPACE HYBRID TO CHANGE FUNCTIONS OVER THE TIME ITʼS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION AND SURELY AN INCIPIT TO DESIGN A MORE ATTRACTIVE SPACE. THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE POSSIBLE VARIATIONS THE BOXES COULD HAVE TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE SPACE. THESE SPACE CONTAIN A PREDETERMINED USE, NEED AND TIME, AND CONTAIN WITHIN THEM OBJECTS WITH PREDETERMINED FUNCTIONS. WHILE THESE ZERO DEGREE SPACES QUIETLY SERVE THEIR PURPOSE, IT IS SUGGESTED THEY ARE BEING APPROPRIATED BEYOND THEIR EXPECTED USE, AND ARE VENERATED WITH NEW MEANING IN THE PROCESS. TO BE ABLE TO CREATE BETTER COMMUNITIES WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO ASK: WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE AND HOW ARE THEY INCLUDED? THINKING ABOUT HOW URBAN SPACES INVITE PEOPLE TO PARTICIPATE ON A STREET LEVEL IS KEY FOR MAKING THRIVING COMMUNITIES. BUILDING SUCCESSFUL PLACES IS ABOUT MORE THAN BRICKS AND MORTAR, IT IS ABOUT KEEPING THE AREAS ACCESSIBLE AND ALIVE WITH MANY DIFFERENT ACTIVIETIES. THE COMMUNITY NEEDS ARE VITAL FOR THIS PURPOSE. MORE FAMILIES ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO INCORPORATE ECO-FRIENDLY OPTIONS INTO EVERY ASPECT OF THEIR CHILDREN’S LIVES, INCLUDING WHERE THEY PLAY AND WHAT THEY PLAY WITH. MANY FAMILIES ARE SEEKING OUTDOOR PLAY OPPORTUNITIES, AND TEACHING THEIR CHILDREN ABOUT THINGS LIKE RECYCLING, GARDENING, AND COMPOSTING. THEY’RE ALSO LOOKING FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY MATERIALS WHEN SELECTING WHICH PRODUCTS TO BUY, INCLUDING KIDS’ TOYS. MANY PARKS AND PLAYGROUNDS HAVE GOTTEN ON BOARD WITH GREEN OPTIONS; IN ISOLA PEPE VERDE MANY SOLUTIONS ARE POSSIBLE TO USE AND TO INCORPORATE WITH THE BOXES AS SOLAR PANELS, ECOBOXES, WATER CONTENERS, RECYCLING SPOT AND MORE GREEN FOR A PLACE COMPLETELY SUSTAINABLE.

uld create an empty plaza ities requires big space.

Rooms: use the boxes to divide the space in different areas following the needs.

A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACE CAN BE DESCRIBED AS A TRUE INTEGRATION OF DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS IN TIME AND SPACE. FOR EXAMPLE, IMPLEMENTING MULTI-FUNCTIONALITY WITHIN COMMUNITIES CREATES SPACES THAT HAVE MULTIPLE PURPOSES. DUE TO THEIR ACCESS TO DIVERSE USES IN ONE PLACE, THESE SPACES CAN CONTRIBUTE TO A COMMUNITY’S VITALITY. THROUGH THE USE OF NARROW RAILS ON THE PLAZA WE WANT TET THE PEOPLE MOVE THE BOXES AND CREATE THEIR OWN SPACE. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE URBAN SPACE ALIVE AND ACCESSIBLE WITH MANY DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES, ANSWER TO THE COMMUNITY NEEDS IS VITAL FOR DESIGN SUCCESSFUL PLACES AND INVITE PEOPLE TO PARTECIPATE IN A “STREET LEVEL LIFE”. CONSIDER THE FABRIC OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD BY STUDYING THE SIZE OF EACH BLOCK, THE ISSUE IS TO RESPECT THE HUMAN SCALE AND THE URBAN FABRIC, AN INFI LL PROJECT WILL INTEGRATE MORE SUCCESSFULLY AND CREATE CONTINUITY, WHICH IN TURNS PROMOTES COMMUNITY HARMONY.

A CITY WITHIN A PARK Aviapolis Urban Blocks Vantaa, Finland 2017

THE HELSINKI-VANTAA AIRPORT IS AN IMPORTANT CENTER OF THE CITY’S GENERATING A MASSIVE INDUSTRIAL FORCE WHICH IS SURE TO HAVE A STRONG IMPACT OVER TIME ON THE CURRENT SITUATION IN AVIAPOLIS AND VANTAA IN GENERAL, AVIAPOLIS CURRENTLY IS A BUSINESS AND INDUSTRIAL AREA AND TO ADAPT TO THE FUTURE INEVITABLE CHANGES THERE SHOULD BE A DETERMINANT AND CLEAR ORDER ALLOWING THE REGION TO EXPAND AND CHANGE AT THE SAME TIME CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IS SUITABLE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO LIVE AN EQUAL LIFE NOT ONLY ORDERED BY THE INDUSTRIAL FORCE BUT ALSO BY THE NATURAL FORCE THE DESIGN AIMS TO MAKE A PLAN FOR THE COMPETITION SITE THAT MAY EXPAND AFFECTING THE SURROUNDING URBAN BLOCKS, IT AIMS TO CREATE A PLACE FOR COMMUNITY TO LIVE, WORK AND ENJOY LIFE AS IT IS ORDERED BY A GREEN PARK THAT WOULD RESHAPE THE REGIONS HUGE URBAN BLOCKS TO SMALLER ONES CREATING PATHWAYS THAT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO WALK THROUGH THE SITE AND REGION WITHOUT THE NEED OF CARS, THIS PATHWAYS WOULD CONNECT THE DIFFERENT ELEMENTS OF THE PROJECT TOGETHER.

THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF FOUR MAIN ELEMENTS, THE PARK, THE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS, THE WORKPLACES AND THE ATOMI BUILDING, THE DESIGN APPROACH IS BASED ON MAKING THE PARK THE MOST DOMINANT ELEMENT IN THE PROJECT IN THE SAME TIME MAKING ATOMI BUILDING THE MAIN CENTER OF THE SITE WHICH CAN BE ACCESSIBLE BY EVERYONE VIA THE PARK PATHWAYS AS IT CREATES THE COMMUNAL IDENTITY OF THE AREA, THE WORKPLACES IS PLACED IN A LOWER LEVEL FROM THE PARK AND IT IS ORGANIZED BY A LINER PROMENADE THAT IS 20 METER WIDE, THIS PROMENADE IS FACING THE SOUTH DIRECTION ALLOWING THE SUN LIGHT TO REACH THE WORKPLACES ALSO A SERIES OF COURTYARDS IS TO BE EXISTED IN THE LOWER LEVEL TO PROVIDE MORE SUNLIGHT AND NATURAL VENTILATION, THE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS TO BE ORGANIZED AROUND THIS COURTYARDS AND ITS HEIGHT IS VARIED BASED ON THE SUNLIGHT DIRECTION, AND IT CONSISTS OF SERIES OF GARDENS IN EVERY LEVEL PROVIDING PLACES FOR COMMUNITY TO SOCIALIZE IT ALSO PROVIDE A NATURAL VENTILATION AND A TINY FARMS FOR THE RESIDENTS, ALL THE PROJECT ELEMENTS ARE CONNECTED VIA PEDESTRIANS AND BIKES PATHWAYS WHICH CONVERTS THE HUGE URBAN BLOCK TO SMALLER PEDESTRIAN BLOCKS ALL THE ELEMENTS WERE DESIGNED THOUGHTFULY TO THE EXISTING STORMWATER STREAMS WHICH EXIST IN THE SITE TO CONTROLL THE STORMEATER INFILTRATION, ANOTHER STREAMS ARE PROPOSED TO BE ADDED IN THE SITE. THE CONCEPT OF THE FORMATION OF THE RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS IS TO CREATE COMMUNAL SPACES FOR COMMUNITY IN EACH LEVEL THAT ALLOWS THEM TO INTERACT AND SOCIALIZE OUTSIDE THE BOUNDARIES OF THE PRIVATE DWELLINGS THIS SPACES IS SHARED TERRACES GENERATED BY THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL SHIFTING OF THE RESIDENTIAL

The proposal is unique and beautifully presented. The best aspect of the proposal is the atmosphere in the housing clusters Competition Jury
