THE TOWER

Manial Waterfront Urban Redevelopment

Greater Cairo is centralized within the main spine passes through the middle of the city the Nile river. In the middle settles an island Named EL-Manial which is one of the main focal points of the city’s remaining one of the oldest settlements throughout the history of the Capital. The island water fonts are overlooking east & west banks of the Nile river of the greater Cairo. The island back then used to accommodate Mohammed Ali palace one of the great rulers of Egypt in the 19th century, high-class residence & other historical buildings. The project main scope was to design & redevelop a sustainable urban & architectural proposal to rehabilitate the Manial west bank waterfront since it has a high potential of representing the Capital. The project was divided into three zones each functioning a different approach. However, one of the main constraints to connect the three zones with two continuous axes, a pedestrian promenade, and green spine

THE BUNDLE Young City Cairo

Cairo’s Ring-road accommodates spaces under the bridging parts left abounded with no use & mostly converted to junk areas, most of these spaces relies next to informal settlement where the lack of open spaces exists. The idea was to redevelop the spaces in a sustainable way to accommodate the settlements with new open spaces with various activities for all individual ages. Throughout the first stages, we visited many sites with the described situation, the site we choose to implement the project had a lot of potential than the other sites to start the idea of redeveloping these types on spaces. As a result from the analysis & surveys during the initial stages we came up with conceptual ideas of building a public space with simple ideas were the people themselves could interact & assist in building such a project. We also planned a time-line phased project to be built in steps.

PHASE 3

PHASE 4

Accessibility: Constructing three main bridges from different gathering points along the street to distribute the density of people in the public space which will allow also the innovation of different space typologies

Attraction: As a result, three main focal points will act as a public space for the users, where users will start to innovate other functions and uses in the space

Youth: Creating playground areas for young individuals to use instead of streets by building simple, low cost and interactive structures from recycled materials

Elder: Initiating activities for elder people such as crafting areas & small market spaces to display and sell their products

Spreading out more activities connecting the three main focal point by adding different sports playgrounds PHASE 5 33

STUTTGART STOCKACH Sustainable Redevelopment of the parkway district

The project “Stuttgart Stöckach – the sustainable redevelopment of the parkway district” aims to develop sustainable urban and landscape concepts for the remodeling and reactivation of the parkway district. The area is currently facing severe environmental problems such as noise pollution and poor air quality as well as inefficient and energy-consuming building structures. However, due to its privileged location directly next to spacious inner-city parkland, the planning area provides the potential to become a new eco-model district for the city of Stuttgart.

SCHLOSSGARTEN

In this ambitious context, the main essential solutions had to be considered for the new urban and landscape design of the district, such as an appropriate density of buildings, preservation, and enhancement of public space and landscape areas, mix of different functions, attractive paths for pedestrians noise protection measures for the main access road and the connection to the park should be strengthened. As for the urban main concept the first issue was to save a large space for parking area for residence & mixed-use function instead of having parking space in courtyards as the situation exists currently a platform will be embedded to elevated the ground floor level to a higher level and use the platforms as parking space to reserve spaces between buildings for attractive public spaces & paths for pedestrians, by the division of clusters each will accommodate its own parking for its buildings use. Architecturally the cluster will be divided into four courtyard buildings instead of one or two to create semi-public spaces in-between & dividing each courtyard to semi-private & private spaces which make the project achieve the diversity of different spaces. Functionally the residential will be laid on the inner part of the cluster & the buffer zone park which isolate the project from the main road traffic & noise, the administrative & commercials will be laid on the main promenades leading to the parkland and on the main street. Luhmühlen Island Berlin Germany Mixed-use Urban Project Two Main Promenades

The Luhmühlen Island is located on the Spree river at Kreuzburg district, Berlin. During the cold war, the island was separated into two parts each under the rule the west and East Berlin at that time. Currently, the tip of the island is occupied by a cement factory on almost half the area & warehouses. The aim of the project in to redevelop the area and design a proposal to create a sustainable mixed-use complex & creating diversity on spaces for users. The main urban concept is to integrate the island into the Spree river & vice versa to make the island tip a more iconic space for individuals to interact with & overlook the cities’ history. Two main pedestrian paths were created approaching the island tip moving up straight with slight inclination at a point to create more curiosity for the pedestrians during walking through the project enhancing the experience along the 2 main paths commercial areas are implemented to serve the public space. Two main parks implemented on the sides acting as a buffer zone divided into three levels. As the project is a car-free zone, an underground parking is to be built & its accessibility would be from two side roads on the edge. Architecturally implementing row building typology helps in accommodating functions vertically & horizontally in an even way of providing a balanced community & respecting the privacy of the users. The building’s height varies from three to five floors. Ground floors contain commercial shops, cafés, restaurants, art galleries & exhibitions. First & second floors accommodate offices. Finally, comes the residential on the fourth & fifth floors with variable areas. Individual Work Supervised by | Prof.Dr. Helmut Bott Prof.Dr. Micheal Hecker 50

THE LEAF

Para-Modular Expo

For quite long and the GUC architects are seeking a place where both academic and social activities can take place, students and staff need to set up meetings, discussions, sociable events and annual exhibitions under the roof of a place with an iconic image to represents the Architecture and Urban Planning Department in the university. The course aimed to focus on the investigation and designing of a standalone, module-based Pavilion of 15 square meter area, in front of the Architectural Building at the Industrial Park. The form of the pavilion is requested to emerge out of the constitution of single modules connected together as a 3d mesh system. Their designs should simultaneously work on the three main subsystems of a building (Form, Structure, and Interface) together in order to achieve the main idea of associative and parametric design.

GUC Knowledge Centre University Library

The German University in Cairo was established in 2003, the plan general master-plan of the campus was determined to be complete by the year 2022, as each year the university will be implementing to building for different faculties, dorms, laboratory buildings, and facility building to sustain the educational environment. One of the most important and valuable structure in a university in the library and since the German University in Cairo has a temporary one, the semester design assignment was to design a central building in the campus which would be the university library. The main scope of the design was to integrate the infront main platform of the campus into the building itself, according to this the ground floor mass was subtracted to create courtyards and covered area for individuals to use as open spaces. The three free-standing ground floor buildings are the main entrance with an information desk, lockers and a search zone to facilitate the book searching through the building two contains the library administration, shop opened on the courtyard and an automated book return system, finally building three contains a cafeteria serving the open spaces on the ground floor. Courtyards created from ground floor subtraction extends to the upper floor plans which mostly accommodates reading areas in the library, group study rooms, and a small exhibition and presentation area, these courts allow more natural light inside the library for the reading activity. Despite that, louver where added on the south facade to decrease the light and heat on the building from that direction because it is exposed to the sunlight most of the day.
