Master’s project Adabtive reuse of public interior space in Okelle Monferato in Alexandria of Egypt
Alexandria of Egypt had many historical events which effect on the city’s architecture and urban fabric, it can be more recognizable in Al-Manshiah district that can be the city center of Alexandria. In that spot, there are many
different urban fabrics and architecture styles like rectangular and Grid streets in “European quarter” that called Mohamed Ali Square nowadays, and the Islamic and Arabic standard layout which in “Turkish town” that called Al-Gomrok district
and France streets now. By the time and by the culture changing, the buildings typology had influenced from the existing culture which can be presented in primitive interventions and new uses for these building, and one of these typology is “Okelle”
and it can be defined as a building with commercial activity in ground floor with an arcades and dwellings for the traders on the upper floors, this typology can be comparable with “19th passages” in Europe.
Although there are different layouts and styles in this spot but there are many common factors between them, and the term of “public interior space can be shown in different typology, and in this research the project will be related to the 19th century European passage typology which has an interior space that opened to the public: study the changes which happened there and how to deal with these interventions, culture aspects and new morphology.
Okelle Monfrato : It was completed to designs by the Italian architect Luigi Piattoli in 1887 during reconstruction of Alexandria after the British strike in 1882. It integrated from Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan the social layer changed and the new one create a new interventions according to their uses and needs inside the building and I can mention the issues in many points 1.All buildings which has an “passage typology, has the issue of accessibility 2.The interventions on the facades with massive structures and signs 3. Primitive structures in interior space
