about Being born and brought up in nature’s own paradise “Kerala” I have always been closely associated with nature from childhood and wanted to be a part of it. I also earnestly yearn to create beautiful things on my own and thought that architecture can satisfy my imagination in space, materials and colour. Having followed my passion and taken architecture and studied for the past semesters, what has been engrained in us is “ the process of architecture ” (from analysis of site, concept and aspirations, connection to the context, etc…) more than the end product. We are trained to analyse the context of the design - about life styles, ways of seeing, ways of living - human behaviour etc. this contributes more to the function, about how our built environment caters and nurtures to the individual, the group and community at large. The intangibles are as important as the tangibles, which is the key design generator. We are guided to see if architecture is rooted in place, its culture and the aspirations of the society are considered during design process. The buildings have to be mired in context and not alien implants from across the seas.

NAVAH LOUNGE VIJAYWADA, aNDHRA PRADESH, india.

PRoffesional - PROJECT ARCHITECT

Invicon Navah located in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh Brief of this project was to re-design a lounge space which was dedicated for these residential units, there had been an exisiting proposal, since the builders were not able to achieve the numbers which they intended due to lack of community spaces, lounge..etc, so we tried understanding the old design with multiple criterias like strength, weakness, threat, opportunities.... based on the study, we concluded in designing this space. First two levels of A, B Block and the threshold between these blocks were boundaries which was given to design, by creating an axes at ground level which acts as a passage that emphasizes the axis from entry node surrounded by landscaped planters & seaters which hollistically becomes one community space was the design provided here at masterplan level. Exterior & Interior finishes of this project were treated with contrasting materials like corten steel, dark grey ips, light grey ips, rust finish paints etc...at various junctions different levels of strategies has been implemented to solve the design with logical strategies & also to achieve visual aesthetics.

Previous Proposal

Current Proposal

-By analysing the user behaviour based on activities, we were able to identify spaces that were required to function and also to enhance the experience, specified activities based spaces were added in new proposal. -Existing Blockworks were removed, to achieve porosity was the ultimate goal, we achieved it throughout the lobby using landscapping which created calm and serene environment.....where as the previous proposals had lot of walls that created barriers between lot of activities. -By creating a landscaped park inside a built a entity to achieve characteristics of an open park was a strong thought which constantly made us arrive at such kind of a space, also elements like sculpture typically found in an open park....staircase was designed in a way that it would resembele an artistic sculpture while looking at it visually.

First Floor Plan of Lounge - Old (left) and New Proposal (right)

Previous Proposal

Current Proposal

-First Floor consists of Multipurpose Hall, Business Lounge at A Block & Gym at B Block, Rustic pallete used in ground floor level were also used here to enhance the user experience, large joinerys were used here to bring in chunk amount of natural lights at walls facing facades on both the blocks. -Various types of portals were used to hightlight entrances of different rooms...at ground level most of rooms were designed using cement fibre board finished with criag & rose - rust finish paint, where at first floor most of the entrances has steel grey granite jams happing on all four sides.

2020 FLOOD - SOUTH KAINAKRY

“KUTTANADU - RICE BOWL OF KERALA “ in Alappuzha district is known for its picturesque expanse of paddy cultivation which forms the main source of the famous ‘boiled rice’ of the state. As a tourist destination, it holds great geographical peculiarities. It is a vast area of partly reclaimed land, covered with the bright green paddy fields, separated by dykes. The unique feature about paddy cultivation in Kuttanad is that the level of water is a few feet higher than the level of the surrounding land. It’s the area with the lowest altitude in India, and one of the few places in the world where farming is carried out below sea level. The place is an amazing labyrinth of shimmering waterways composed of lakes, canals, rivers and rivulets. Lined with dense tropical greenery, it offers a glimpse into the rural life-styles of Kerala. Agriculture and seasonal fishing is the main occupation of the natives of Kuttanadu. After monsoon, cultivation is taken up on lands bounded by waterways by erecting bunds along the flow of water. When water flow increases, the bunds are breached causing floods in the paddy fields. This region has been under intense and increasing anthropogenic pressure over the years, which has adversely affected its ecology as well as the livelihood of the people. The high level of pollution with organic, inorganic and toxic material locally generated and brought in by the rivers, aggressive spread of water hyacinth, poor drainage due to choked water ways, increasing intensity of flooding resulting in loss of flora and aquatic fauna.

MORPHOLOGY // SETTLEMENT PATTERN

1700 - Lake & Deltatic Plains

1814 - 1912 - First Stage of Land Reclamation

Rich Organic deposition mixed with water. The highlands are dense with green and lower marshy wetlands. Terraced farming was practised on the upper regions.

Parayas reclaimed the land (Kayals) and did below sea level farming. Followed later by Nairs and Syrian Christians. Due to Apprehension of the Presidency of Madras that land reclamation may affect the Port of Cochin, Land Reclamation was stopped.

1912 - 1945 - Second Stage of Land Reclamation

1949 - Last Stage of Land Reclamation

The Kings of Travancore encouraged Kayal Reclamation after withdrawal of the act by Madras province. In 1943 slavery was demolished and the labours demanded wages for the works done, hence the reclamation of kayals reduced as the owners did not want to pay wages.

Reclaimed kayals were initially huge parcels of land difficult to maintain, It was broken into smaller parcel of lands for easy maintenance and effective polder system of agriculture and bi seasonal fishing activity.

1990- Scattered Settlements Scattered settlements within the paddy feilds, an random settlement based on land accessiblity.

CURRENT- Settlemnet along the water channels Scattered settlements within the paddy feilds, an linear settlement along the roads and water ways.

BELOW SEA-LEVEL FARMING // POLDER SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION PROCESS Kuttanad Below Sea-level Farming System (KBSFS) is an unique farming system in India

that practices rice cultivation below sea level. The major land use structure of KBSFS is flat stretches of

rice fields in about 50,000 ha, of mostly reclaimed kayal delta swamps. They exist in three landscape

elements: Karapadam (upland rice fields), Kayal (wetland rice fields) and Kari (land buried with black coal like materials). The rice fields are popularly known as “Puncha Vayals”.

Traditionally KBSFS favoured only one crop of paddy followed with inland and estuarine fish

wealth, notably the endemic prawn species, pearl spot and clams. Farmers of Kuttanad developed

and mastered the spectacular technique of below sea level cultivation, which has several similarities with the Dutch polder system, over 150 year ago. They made this system unique as it contributes remarkably well to the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystem services including several livelihood services.

The recognition of KBSFS as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System will instill

pride and will lead to the conservation of this unique below sea level rice-fish farming system.

Cities are growing at a substantial rate and increasing population affects built areas while causing further urban sprawl. There is a need to understand and focus on the effects of this phenomenon on our cities keeping in view its liveability, cultural identity and vitality. We need to acknowledge the fact that cities cannot and should not extend their limits endlessly. Most of our cities lack efficient streets, good public places and any distinct character in the built form. This is partly attributable to rapid urbanization and to the lack of a distinct focus on the problems concerning the liveability of a city. The premise is that all the cities must provide and support good public life by constantly improving and upgrading the city infrastructure along with maintaining its identity. Community or neighbourhood attachment can be defined as cultural identity, loyalty, optimism, pride, and passion that people feel about the place where they live. What makes people want to invest their future in a place? Is it a welcoming and friendly community? Are there available social offerings such as entertainment, recreation, places to sit and eat parks and green spaces? Or is it a physically attractive space with greenery? Yes is the answer to the entire above question. Ayanpuram, or Ayanavaram, is one of the prominent localities of Chennai and is located in Central Chennai at about 8 km from the city's centre. Ayanavaram is one of the peripheral commercial belts of Chennai. Ayanpuram is the original name, derived from an old historic story mentioning "a battle between Lord Brahma and Lord Muruga, where Lord Muruga admonished Brahma and took over the process of creation on earth, later Lord Brahma prayed to Lord Shiva and got his action of creativity of life back. It is believed that Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Shiva here. It is in recognition of that event Ayanpuram is named. It was also called Brahmapuri. A place with such a rich historic background and prominent position has lost its identity in the fast pace growth over time. The core intent of this design proposal is to study the present scenario of Ayanavaram and understand its growth, needs and to create a healthy green cultural community identity to this locality. This project looks at possibilities of renewal and redevelopment within the functioning city without losing the core identity and functionalism of the neighbourhood. "VIRIDESCENT QUIETUDE"- a green relaxing space offering all the needs of the immediate neighbourhood.

ENVISAGING THE ETHREAL FICTIOANAL SITE

4th semester.

THE BLUE WAS VEILED BY THE HAZE OF GOLDEN YELLOW AIM This design aims aat exploring and expressing the memory lane through a series of experiences. It conceptualises a form of architecture uncommitted to a visible, tangible materiality and explores an evolving impermanent and invisible architecture drawn wholly from the body moving air - filled space. A form is given to the intangible character treating him as a living being expressing the intangible emotions experienced in the space.

“Drawing is not an exercise of particular dexterity but above all means of expressing intimate feelings and moods”. Henri Matisse

BUIO ALBAA WEATHER & LIGHT

It all began with roaring voice of my grandfather calling ‘mone elunelkku tahajuddin samayam ayi!” I wokeup rubbing the sleep from my eyes, crying to wake up at three in the morning at the age of seven. To pacify me, he promised he promised that he would take me out if i woke up and do my prayers. On his promise, I woke up, took bath, prayed and waited as eager as beaver for him. Holding his hands i started my life’s most memorable journey. As we stepped out from our house a misty blanket of heavy black clouds rolled over us i kept on asking him “ enne evidekanu kondu pokunne uppapa ?”. He smiled holding me and pointed the silent mountains as transient as clouds - “The Palakaya Thattu, Kannur”. Listening to the silence of nature and the whispering winds, we started to walk through the cold streets, dimly lit only by the fire flashing across the sky. Our first stop in this journey was the thattu kada, small thatch roof huts along the river bed, with benches. The shopsinvited us with the melody of old Malayalam and Hindi old songs that a brought a smile as big as moon on my uppapa’s face, that steaming the hot glass of lemon tea and undaputtuin that chill weather was like eating sunshine. Uppapa used to tell me stories about our hometown and I loved listening to it, there used to a be small group of people sitting and sharing their lives to each other and enjoying the quiet whispering winds. Uppapa borrowed cycle from his friend’s shop and we started our next part of the journey, The mountain seems no more a souless thing, but rather as a shape of ancient fear in darkness and the winds of chaos born, amid the lord less heavens thundering - a presence

crouched, enormous and austere before whose feet the mighty waters mourn. I sat in front holding the handle bar of the cycle with my tiny hands listening silent rhythm of nature wondering if the magical moment was a dream or reality. The misty paths unvieled the unknown at every twist and turns. Listening to the stories that uppapa was telling about the small villages, i was eagerly watching at the small sparkes if flames that peaked out from the dark mountains. Suddenly there was a sheet of rain slicing the soggy ar into bits, We took shelter at the small cluster of huts that sparked fire from the common fire that was litin the centre. Sitting in thier Verandha we looked down at the path what we drove. The heat that came from the small camp fire was like drinking a hut cup of tea in freeze time. The warmth that created wa not only physically but internally from deep withing. The rain reduced to a drizzle on the high ridges and mist everywhere. We continued to bike uphill to the top. We reached the top when the greyish blue sky was veiled with the haze of golden yellow.
