I am pleased to present the “Mohawk College Foundation 2013-14 Annual Report”, to the community. We have completed year two of our new reality as a fully functioning, independent Foundation. It has been a busy year with a fair degree of change. We welcomed two new board members to serve on the Foundation: Pat McKay and Brent Foreman. We are very pleased with the successful implementation of fundraising and alumni projects. These projects have been completed under the oversight of the President of the Foundation, Wayne Joudrie. At our June 2014 meeting Wayne submitted his resignation and the board offered their appreciation of the transitional leadership that he provided. We are looking forward to working directly with our new President, Ron J. McKerlie. Mr. McKerlie will be fulfilling the dual role as President of Mohawk College and President of The Mohawk College Foundation. We anticipate that he will be building on our most recent success to ensure that Mohawk College continues to be recognized as the #1 College in the GTHA! As we head into the 2014-15 year we have many great plans to enhance the experience at the College through the efforts of the Foundation. Key components of those plans include:
• • •
Strong Alumni Engagement Metrics Finalizing the Engineering Technology Campaign Completion of the Stoney Creek Campus Renewal
On behalf of the Board of Directors and employees of Mohawk College Foundation, we are proud to offer you an overview of the remarkable successes of 2013-14. Looking forward to the coming year! Sharon Lax Chair, Mohawk College Foundation
President’s Message: Greetings! On behalf of the Mohawk College Foundation staff, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have been instrumental in the continuing growth and success of the Mohawk College Foundation. The Mohawk College Foundation was initially created in 1983 however, because of regulations at that time colleges were not permitted to aggressively fundraise. The Foundation entered a period of dormancy that lasted from the late 1990’s until 2012. During that dormant period a group of staff and community leaders continued to ensure that regular meetings were held and that the charitable status of MCF was maintained. Starting in April 2012, we moved to a new era. The Mohawk College Foundation stepped out of dormancy and now fulfills an active and important role in promoting/supporting the College. In our second full year as a flourishing enterprise we have accomplished significant milestones including: • • • • • •
Standardizing our Policies/Procedures Successful execution of several signature events (ex. Alumni of Distinction, Alumni Golf Classic, Steeltown Friends of Mohawk Music – Jimmie Vaughan and Robben Ford Concerts, President’s Dinner and President’s Golf Classic) Building a strong sense of teamwork based upon the Mission/Vision/ Values of MCF Successful Completion of Phase 1 of the Fennell Renewal Campaign Naming of the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre Enlisting the support of a strong team of local employers to advocate for the proposed Engineering Technology Centre
Mission, Vision and Values
Mission Supporting success and building lasting relationships.
Vision Engaged communities creating transformational opportunities.
Values Respect: We foster quality relationships that are built on respect Service Excellence: We are committed to service excellence Accountability: We demonstrate accountability Innovation: We encourage and support innovation for continuous improvements
We have continued to be a significant part of the success story that is Mohawk College. We have been rated the #1 College in the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area for the fourth year in a row. The contributions to the capital and scholarship/bursary campaigns are key components of that success. It has been another busy and satisfying year. In closing, I would like to offer my personal thanks to the donors, partners and staff for allowing me to serve the College and the Foundation over the past three years. It has been a most rewarding and energizing experience that I will cherish forever! Best wishes and take care! Wayne Joudrie President

The Mohawk College Foundation is working to ensure the College continues to grow and thrive for future generations. The Foundation raises important funding for priority needs such as scholarships, bursaries and major infrastructure projects and it is our community of caring individuals, corporations, industry partners and government who play a key role in the success of our College. Their charitable investments ensure the College meets the needs of students today and tomorrow. To date, close to $80 million in capital improvements have been completed as part of the Fennell Campus Renewal Project and the College continues to transform its campuses. When David Braley announced his $3.0 million gift to Mohawk College, he changed the face of the Fennell Campus, and Mohawk Athletics. The opening of the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre this past year has already had a tremendous impact on the overall fitness and wellness for Mohawk’s students, faculty and staff. As one of the best athletic facilities in the College system, it is a remarkable place for our varsity athletes to compete, to practice and to play. The College welcomed David Braley and his wife Nancy Gordon back to campus in January when it held the official launch of the David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre.
We encourage and support innovation for continuous improvements.
Among the history-making renovations made possible by the generosity of community supporters was the creation of our new Student Services Centre - The Square. Now in one central location, The Square has made it far easier for students to get the help, support and services they need. Over the past year we announced gifts from two longstanding College partners whose campaign gifts are recognized in The Square. BMO Bank of Montreal announced its gift of $300,000 and created the BMO Financial Group Advisement Centre; Great West Life, Canada Life and London Life donated their gift of $100,000, in support of a training and conference centre. Both of these partners have made a remarkable difference to Mohawk College, and to our students at The Square. When iDeaWorks was founded a few years ago as an applied research lab, it built on the solid tradition of applied learning for which Mohawk College is known. In the past several years, hundreds of students have collaborated with dozens of corporate partners in pursuit of innovative solutions through this initiative. Former Board of Governors Chair John Marinucci is a strong supporter of the College’s research and campus renewal efforts, and this January, the Marinucci Family Foundation iDeaWorks Research Lab was named in honour of their $250,000 gift. Every student attending Mohawk College deserves the opportunity to face the future with confidence, excitement and optimism. Donor support for student awards helps to make college education accessible to everyone, and allows our students to concentrate on preparing themselves for the career path that lies ahead. Several noteworthy student awards were established over the last year. When former President Rob MacIsaac left Mohawk this year, his leadership was characterized as ground-breaking and transformational for the College. As he said farewell, the Rob MacIsaac Future Ready Endowed Bursary was created in his honour. More than $200,000 was raised for this award, thanks to our donors and two friends of Mohawk - the Marshall Family and The Joyce Foundation who each provided generous matching gifts of $50,000 to encourage support for this award. Other major awards established this year include:
• • •
Economical Insurance Scholarship GWD Foundation for Kids Bursary OACETT Engineering Technology Award

“It has been a year of hard work in Mohawk’s Cardiovascular Technology program which is now seeing reward for efforts and grades. I appreciate the financial support this bursary provides as it has been a significant help over the course of my studies. Due to the clinical placement aspect of the curriculum, I have 40 hours of volunteer work at the Hamilton General Hospital on top of having to work extra-long days and weekends at my part time job. It has been a struggle to keep up with rent and food at this pace, as well as going deeper into debt with OSAP. As you can see, the support and generosity has helped me immensely and for that, I am truly grateful!” Anonymous Student – recipient of the Ike and Shahnaz Ahmed Bursary
Our success has been built upon a solid foundation in strong relationships.
A number of major awards that have been created through endowment gifts were presented to students for the first time, helping students follow their path to become future ready graduates. The following major awards helped students this past year:
• • • • •
Economical Insurance Scholarship Economical Insurance Bursary Paula Burke Memorial Bursary Tammy Coates SSW Bursary Marion & Frances Kadish Bursary
Each year, the Alumni Council establishes an award in the name of the newest Alumni of Distinction honourees. The 2012 recipients include: Marco Felvus, Kevin Ford, Debbie Logel Butler, Steve Marsh, Linda Rourke, Mark Runciman, Elaine Principi and Narine Dat Sookram. Ryan Barichello, Derrick LaRiviere, Diana Zanin, Mindy Tweedle and Earl Clarke are past honourees that chose to make a gift to maintain the legacy of the original award established in their honour. Our alumni have a unique appreciation for the value of a Mohawk education, and we are grateful for their gifts in support of future graduates. Mohawk College has developed a strong reputation for its quality education and future ready graduates. Our signature events provide an opportunity to share the Mohawk story with our broader community while raising important funds to support our students. The sold out President’s Golf Tournament took place on a sunny day last fall at the Beverley Golf and Country Club. U.S. Steel Canada Ltd., Perkins + Will and other sponsors helped raise money in support of bursaries benefitting the College’s highest needs students. The success of the President’s Dinner in February was due to record attendance, and the kindness of sponsors like McKeil Marine, Cogeco, L-3 Wescam, Ameresco and Pures College of Technology. Combined, these two events raised $50,000 directly toward student bursaries. The Marshall Family held its Annual Gerald Marshall Centre Benefit in March, raising $55,000. This is a cherished event that the Marshall Family has held for the past eight years, over which time proceeds have benefitted improvements to our Stoney Creek Campus and vital student awards.

“I am a first year student in the Child and Youth Worker program. I chose this field because it was always a dream of mine to become an educator working with children. I started this quest when I chose to come to Canada to pursue my education. Your generosity has inspired me, boosted my self-esteem immensely and also encourages me to continue to follow my dreams no matter how hard it might seem. You have made a huge difference in my life and I will continue to help others and give back to Mohawk College and the Hamilton community similar to how you are giving back to us. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and generous.” Deseree Parrish-Campbell – recipient of the Guard.me Scholarship
Donors support not only special projects at Mohawk, but also its long term needs. This year donor support through cash donations, gifts in kind and new pledges totalled just over $5.1 million. Last year, the endowment grew by $516,000 to just over $15 million thanks to donor support. Endowment funds are an important source of support for the College because of their long term legacy to student bursaries and scholarships It takes a great deal to be a great school. It takes money and resources. It takes the collaboration of community, business and government. And it takes the generosity of caring individuals, foundations and professional groups. The Mohawk College Foundation wishes to take this opportunity to thank our donors for your generosity. You have helped to shape our campuses, and support our students. Thanks to you, our students leave Mohawk ready to take on challenging careers as Future Ready graduates.

Alumni Relations Office Report:
alumni.mohawkcollege.ca
We believe Mohawk College transforms the lives of its students and alumni.
Building quality lasting relationships that engage the Mohawk alumni community to enhance Mohawk College is the primary focus of the Alumni team. The Office of Alumni Relations strives to engage Mohawk College alumni through diversified programs, services, events and activities. We work to maintain open lines of communication and opportunities for graduates to keep connected with Mohawk College. The variety of alumni programs enables the alumni staff and Advisory Council to connect with students, young alumni and the overall alumni population. Alumni events such as class and varsity team reunions, networking and etiquette living labs, Alumni @work programs, as well as our various affinity and member benefit programs, have been established to engage graduates with Mohawk College. The Alumni of Distinction Bursary and Scholarship Award program was launched by the Mohawk College Alumni Association in 2011 in order to celebrate the achievements of all Alumni of Distinction Award recipients. These one-time entrance awards were set up in the recipients’ honour with the aim of providing access to education for students. In 2013-2014, conversations continued with past recipients where they were given the opportunity to perpetuate their award to ensure it continues to reward students each year. Last year five new Alumni of Distinction financial awards were created totalling an additional $12,500 in support of scholarships and bursaries.
2013-2014 Alumni signature events included the 9th Annual Alumni Golf Classic, with over 110 golfers in attendance, raising over $5,000 in support of student scholarships and bursaries. The Alumni of Distinction Awards Dinner, held in October, celebrated the career achievements and community contributions of eight distinguished alumni amongst a crowd of over 200 guests from local businesses and community organizations. Entrance Awards were established by the Alumni Association in each of the recipient’s names to further honour their accomplishments, providing an additional $4,000 in support of student awards.

New interactive Alumni of Distinction Award Walls – one in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre and one in the C-wing Atrium.
“There seems to be excitement among past and recent graduates with all the new changes happening on campus. There is a newfound pride with being a Mohawk Alumni. My experiences at the alumni event allowed me to network with a variety of different people.” – Aminu Bello ’12
A highlight of the year for our Alumni family took place in January when we unveiled both of our new interactive Alumni of Distinction Award Walls at the Fennell Campus – one in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre and one in the C-wing Atrium. These state-of-the-art interactive walls allow individuals to view photos, bios and videos of all our Alumni of Distinction award recipients – a wonderful way to honour our distinguished alumni. Over the years, in an effort to provide benefit rates, quality products and services to our graduates, partnerships with businesses and corporations have been formed. In 2013-2014, we were excited to add Manulife Insurance to our list of affinity partners, offering term life and health and dental insurance programs for our alumni. To date alumni affinity partners include: BMO Mohawk Mastercard, Johnson Insurance, Jostens, and Leader Frame Manufacturing. The highest priority of these companies is to offer top-quality services to our graduates. Additionally, when graduates take advantage of these affinity programs, financial support is provided back to the Alumni Association to support operating costs and improving Alumni programming. In the last year, building relationships with young alumni has become a key focus for the Office of Alumni Relations. In the spring of 2013, the Mohawk Young Alumni Committee (MYAC) was established, focusing on those who have graduated within the last 10 years. This passionate group of young alumni collaborated with Alumni staff to organize and implement the first MYAC launch event, which took place in February of 2014. As we continue to build the culture of giving from our graduates, the Alumni Annual Fund appeal was circulated once again in October 2013. Our graduates’ generosity was urgently requested to help fund student awards enabling current and potential students’ access to a Mohawk education. Our graduates responded at an incredible rate, increasing participation by 400%. We are grateful for the gifts received and hope that this will embed a new tradition at Mohawk, where alumni are inspired to help the next generation of graduates following in their footsteps.
