welcoming words
greetings from the alumni council chair Marcine Blake, ’88 – Recreation Leadership
Since this past fall’s Alumni Council retreat, we on the Council have focused on planning and supporting College efforts in preparation of the upcoming year-long celebration of Mohawk College’s 50th Anniversary, in 2017. There are many events and special programs currently in the works and I can’t wait for you to hear about them. Whether you graduated last spring or it’s been years since you last returned to campus, I truly hope you are able to take part in some of the exciting events. We continue to reach out and encourage our grads to give back to the College either by giving your time – through many volunteering opportunities, such as speaking at Convocation and through providing mentorship to current students. Or monetarily - by donating to the Alumni Annual Appeal in support of bursaries to help students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams with a Mohawk education. Thanks again! We look forward to hearing from you soon and hope to see you at the 50th celebrations.

take a trip down memory lane Wendy Makey, ‘93 – Director, Alumni Relations In 2017 Mohawk Turns 50 50 years of providing post-secondary education to students of all ages. 50 years of history, and 50 years of making memories for students, staff and faculty. Lectures taught by faculty who were industry experts. The relationships that were built and the lifelong friendships created with classmates and teammates. reflecting on her college years
melissa agnew ‘10 By Lorraine Young, 3rd Year Journalism Within two years she started overlapping that work with a role in the medical/surgical ambulatory care unit at Hamilton Health Sciences, where she trained in wound care and began the
studies toward bridging her RPN qualification to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with Nipissing University. By 2014, she was on her way to Alberta to work at the Canmore General Hospital while she shifted her ongoing studies to the bridging program at Athabasca University. It Melissa Agnew needs to send a big shout out to her former teachers at Mohawk College. Before she graduated from the practical nursing program in 2009 Agnew says she “highly disliked” the personal reflection activities that were asked of her. She just didn’t see the point. Now she sees those reflections in a whole new light. In fact, she confesses her old reluctance about them to her own students in the practical nursing program at Bow Valley College in Calgary, where she teaches part-time. “I hope this instills in them a sense of common ground between us,” says Agnew, “And allows them to come to me without fear if they need to talk about their own doubts.” She now understands that reflective writing can tell you a lot about a person. She’s also got a whole lot more to reflect on these days. Agnew has been busy since her days as the IAHS campus
was at this time that she began the part-time teaching career that brought the reflective writing process back to her. In 2015, when she started full-time work with the Bow Valley Primary Care Network as a chronic disease management nurse at the Ridgeview Medical Centre, she took up a specialization in immunization, while still working as a casual LPN at the hospital, and teaching at the college. Somewhere in between all of that she had time to indulge her love of hiking and snowboarding, and to meet Scott - her partner and travel mate. “I am very fortunate to have met a partner

Agnew is expecting her baby in June and looks forward to passing on a love of travel and hands-on education to her child. That wanderlust will potentially begin this year with a cross-country road trip to introduce her newborn to family and friends back in Ontario. She’s been keeping in touch through social media since moving to Lake Louise, where she loves to play tour guide to visitors, showing them all the things that are missed by typical tourists. Born and raised in Niagara Falls, Agnew came to Hamilton to attend McMaster University in 2002. By the time she graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Earth Sciences she realized she had a love for hands-on work, getting out of the lecture hall and into the world to learn. Her desire to travel had taken her backpacking through Europe, but during her studies, she discovered opportunities to see the world as a volunteer that filled her next three summers with explorations of South America and South-East Asia. All of that led her back to the nursing program, continuing studies at the Mohawk campus in west Hamilton and the pursuit of her desire to have an important role in health care. Her parents had supported her through university and she was the first in her family to achieve that degree. But she found her own way through nursing, with her family joking that she stayed in school long enough to be a doctor. She says she loves being a nurse, thriving on the variety of the work and the continuous education and growth that pushes her to constantly learn more and improve herself. “I often reference my instructors from Mohawk during my own teaching,” says Agnew. “Now that I am an instructor I can appreciate their hard work much more than I could as a student.” She recalls patience as one of the key things they taught her, as well as “letting each student know that they are important to you.”

This past October, Mohawk opened doors to City School by Mohawk, a community-based initiative born out of the College’s Access Strategy. The Access Strategy, launched in 2010, has focused on increasing postsecondary participation rates in Hamilton’s priority neighbourhoods. City School, a learning hub, opened with its first location in the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre alongside other service providers. The programming delivered out of City School is driven by community needs and is focused on making postsecondary education attainable for those Hamiltonians who might not consider College as a possibility. City School is bringing postsecondary experiences into the community in a non-threatening, risk-free space. We strive to make learning accessible, timely, and encourage gradual steps towards postsecondary. The City School team started small this past fall, offering learning for life lectures and employmentrelated services. This winter, we were thrilled to offer our first free credit courses, in which students earned Mohawk College credits for their participation in 10-week courses. By removing tuition fees, offering child minding, and making classes happen in familiar community space, we are breaking down barriers to education and breaking new ground as a community college. We also continue to offer learning labs, speakers series, youth programs, and community events – all tailored to the needs of community members.
All City School programming is developed in consultation with community residents. The City School team connects with the community in a variety of ways, which include community hub meetings, open conversations at 541 Eatery and Exchange, and a proactive presence at community events. The team has worked hard to create grassroots partnerships with community service providers and trust relationships with residents. For example, the community has indicated that access to childcare is a significant barrier to education, so Mohawk students in the full-time ECE program provided on-site childminding to students taking our credit courses. This also allows for an authentic experiential learning experience for Mohawk students and provides them the opportunity to give back to the Hamilton community. We’ve been floored by the incredible support from our faculty, staff and community partners. As envisioned, we are well on our way to accomplishing our vision of City School as a collaborative education hub. In alignment with the province’s Community Hubs in Ontario Action Plan, we hope to continue to integrate Mohawk’s services seamlessly into existing Hamilton services to best serve our community members’ needs. As alumni, we encourage you to get involved with City School. We are always looking at ways to demonstrate pathways to postsecondary to our participants, and connections to industry. If you are interested in sharing your experiences, talents, or knowledge at City School, contact us at (905) 575-2489 or cityschool@mohawkcollege.ca
We are also excited to announce the start-up of our alumni speaker series. This coming May, five female alumni will

celebrating the journey By Adam Hislop ‘01 In 2015, I was very thrilled to hear that our video production company, Atomic Spark, had won two Silver Telly Awards for projects we produced. One was for a project with SportHamilton, an organization tasked with promoting sport in the city, and another for a project called Smart Brantford, promoting the Smart City initiative of the City of Brantford. Both projects were amazing to work on, creatively challenging, and logistically complex. Both were extremely satisfying. Both reminded me of a valuable lesson about celebrating success.
to merge this business with another, more established company. After spending a few years there, then doing some freelance and other production work, I knew it was time for a change.
My own career path has meandered, reminding me regularly that the road to success is not a straight line. After graduating from the Television Broadcasting program in 2001, I started a business producing corporate videos and commercials. I knew how to make videos but had no idea about running a business. There was a lot of learning over the early years, and ultimately I decided
In the early days, I spent some time dreaming and planning, casting the vision for what I wanted this new venture to look like. I developed a relationship with a business coach, which was one of the most valuable investments I made, and something I highly recommend to other entrepreneurs. Together, we laid the groundwork for how the business was supposed to grow. I had a plan; now to get building.

Whatever that thing is that makes entrepreneurs be entrepreneurial, I had it, and couldn’t escape it. Deep down I had vision for something that just had to be built. So, in 2010, Atomic Spark was born.
feature story It took some time, but finally the ball was rolling. The company started to grow. Through the daily trials of managing projects and running the business, I kept a constant focus on the grand vision for what I wanted the company to be. This is where success was, and I couldn’t wait to get there. It’s painfully obvious as I write now, but I’ve learned the valuable lesson that success isn’t just a destination to reach. It’s something to be celebrated at each step along the path. Winning the Telly Awards was one of the steps along the way that have forced me to step back from the chaos of the everyday and appreciate that I get to spend those days doing what I love. It’s that 10,000 foot view, where you can see some of the progress towards the goal and stop to appreciate all of the awesome things that are happening right now.
So I encourage you… watch for those milestones, and celebrate the wins every day, big and small. Enjoy the journey. Adam Hislop, ‘01 Video Producer at Atomic Spark adam@atomicspark.ca

The strategies and actions of the EMP are arranged into eight Pillars. These Pillars lay the foundation for sustainability and the Greenhouse Gas emissions reduction target of 30% by 2020.
PILLAR FOCUS: PARTICIPATION & ENGAGEMENT This Pillar focuses on outreach and education initiatives that give students the opportunity to be directly involved with the design and implementation of sustainability at Mohawk. By creating a dialogue with students, the “Sustainability IQ” of the campus population increases. This supports a change in behaviours and attitudes that make the College and its surrounding communities more sustainable.
PARTICIPATION & ENGAGEMENT This Pillar focuses on creating opportunities that foster change in business practices and personal behaviours that directly impact the ollege s environmental bottom line. Through education, experiential learning opportunities and direct outreach, students are challenged to participate in the identification and implementation of sustainable programs, initiatives and personal behaviours. At Mohawk, students will gain the knowledge and skill sets that will help shape them into the sustainable leaders of tomorrow.
Sustainability Initiatives Fund The Sustainability Initiatives Fund (SIF) is a student-led partnership between the Mohawk Students’ Association and the College. The SIF directly supports campus sustainability enhancements focused on research opportunities, programs and services, infrastructure upgrades and student employment opportunities. International Graduate
crystal bian Business – Marketing, 2006 Business Marketing graduate, Lina “Crystal” Bian came to Canada and Mohawk as a mature student, with a 15-year career behind her, as an International student from China. Working for a Canadianbased company, starting in 1999, in China recruiting Chinese students for the College, Crystal saw the potential and opportunity available in Canada.
spend with their families as she explains, “although Chinese claim to be very family-oriented, Canadians seem to spend more time with their families, especially evenings and weekends.” She also noted how do-it-yourself our culture is as she observed, “most Canadians are very handy; doesn’t matter baking, fixing cars or something at home, Canadians enjoy DIY while Chinese are quite weak at this part.” Her advice for new comers to Canada and Mohawk is to get involved, open themselves up to new experiences and always ask questions.
She first enrolled in Mohawk’s English as a Second Language course to improve her English. Then, joined Mohawk’s Marketing Co-Op program, which she says pushed her to go outside of her upbringing and her culture’s reserved nature. Soon she was excelling as she shares, was indeed difficult at the beginning. Doing “ Itpresentations, group work and participation during the lectures are the key components of the Marketing Program. But looking back, I gained a lot from those two years. During the school years, I participated in the peer-tutor program. I was also a student ambassador as I understand how much help those new students needed. I was very fortunate to receive the President Award in 2005.

manufacturing and aerospace companies that are interested in using 3D printing technology on an industrial scale. So he was caught off guard when he got a call from a local car collector about a vintage car located in New Zealand. The ask? Help reproduce rare headlight stanchions for the restoration of a 1923 Rolls-Royce. The stand-alone replacement parts were proving to be impossible to find, but a perfect match for the headlight stanchions happened to be attached to another vintage Rolls-Royce, this one in Ontario- and fortunately located right around the corner from Mohawk College. So, the collector asked, can Mohawk help produce 3D scans of the Ontario-based part that can then be used to create the replicas in New Zealand? The answer was yes. For Coulson, it was the perfect job to help the AMRC’s coop students understand a common challenge in additive manufacturing: how to reverse engineer an existing part using 3D scanning and then manufacture it using 3D printing. Mechanical Engineering student Stephanie Childs spent two weeks scanning the headlight stanchions using the Engineering Technology’s FaroArm. This generated a surface model via 3D line scanning to create a CAD model that would accurately reproduce a part manufactured 93 years ago. Once Mohawk’s role was complete, the 3D model was sent to New Zealand, where a more geographically convenient 3D printer produced the plastic parts. The final stage was the creation of a pattern from the plastic parts that was used to create the brass replicas.

The following is an excerpt from the Rolls-Royce Owner Club, Inc, USA (RROC) February newsletter, that tells the story of the car restoration: “Clive explained he was in the process of continuing a long-stalled restoration of a 1923 Rolls-Royce 20 HP, chassis GF3, a car with a long history in Australia. Apart for more than 20 years it had made its way from Australia to New Zealand in a container, so as you might expect between being disassembled for a generation and having been moved numerous times, a few pieces had gone missing. Among the parts Clive needed were a set of headlight stanchions. He reached out to other members of the RROC to see if they might happen to have a spare set. Now, to be honest, there are probably not a lot of headlight stanchion hoarders in the Club, and it is not the kind of part that the factory was likely to have produced for inventory. You just do not get a lot of demand for headlight stanchions. But Clive asked, and Peter, a member from Ontario, Canada contacted Clive and sent photos of the ones from his car. They were off the car and could easily be photographed from virtually every angle. But that was not all! Once they realized these were the right parts, Peter reached out to a local community college that was able to produce 3D scans, which he then sent to Clive. Armed with the photos and the 3D scan, Clive set out to find someone with a 3D printer to produce the parts in resin, which could then be used to produce a pattern from which brass stanchions could be cast. All of this was new both to Peter in Canada and Clive in New Zealand (and me in Mechanicsburg). But, armed with the scans, Clive found a company with a 3D printer who quoted him about $300 to make the two plastic stanchions. A bit put off by that quote, he did a bit more research on the web and found a Dutch organization named “3D Hub” whose stated objective was to have a member with a 3D printer within 50 miles of every customer around the world! It turned out that there was a member located less than a mile from Clive who had a 3D printer in his spare bedroom and agreed to produce the two plastic stanchions for approximately $50! Tell me that we are not living in amazing times! Can you imagine a man living in New Zealand restoring a 100 year old car, built in England, operated in Australia, with the help of a fellow RROC member in Canada, using technology supported by an organization in Holland? I guess that is just one more reason to join a car club.”
