MOHAWK COLLEGE OF APPLIED ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY

1976-1977

Presidents Message Mohawk College Yearbooks now grace the shelves of many thousands of men and women who have crossed our convocation stage in the past ten years. Now in our second decade of operation as Mohawk College, I am glad to be able to say a few words to the graduating class of 1977 ¡ Graduation from College is an important milestone in a person's life. As I said in my Farewell" to the Graduates at the Spring Convocations on May 14 .... it has been a most important two or three years for it has marked your transition from one way of life to another. In this message I speak to you as individuals who have crossed the _great divide of postsecondary education and who now grapple with a new life with all its complexities and problems. Some of you will have gone on to continue your post-secondary education in other places. Most of you will be immersed in that first, real job in the working world. There are some who have found the job market a tough nut to crack and are still seeking a position in business and industry. But I think all of you will be discovering that education is a lifetime process. We never stop learning. The day we do is a sad event. Dr. Samuel Mitminger I believe our 1977 graduates have made a significant impression; an impression that permeated President of Mohawk College our convocations -you are serious about life. You are serious in your desire to create a world better than that fostered by your parents and their parents before them. You are serious in your intent to put your learning and skills to a real purpose. Arnold Edinborough, who gave the convocation address at our afternoon ceremony on May 14, made an interesting comment about Mohawk and its graduates in his regular column in The Financial Post. He said .... .'The graduates, with red and yellow liripipes draped over their left shoulders ...... . were going into business administration, accounting ....... and other commercial employment. Interesting that the great majority of them had jobs to go to and that they were dressed as though the graduation meant something to them (not a pair of jeans in sight) .. . .•...... they are going to do better in the marketplace than a lot of those who, in other places that afternoon, were getting a full hood draped over their shoulders. • To his comments I can only say ..... . 'Amen'. I opened this message with the remark about the Mohawk College Yearbooks held by past graduates. Yearbooks have a curious habit of lingering in our lives. From time to time they are retrieved from bookshelves for a few minutes of browsing and recollections of events long past. In the years ahead this Yearbook will evoke memories. Faces of people who once shared your campus activities will come back into focus. You will remember classroom disasters and triumphs, fellow students who once shared your space and your world. Some of the spirit of Mohawk College will seep from the pages back into your mind. Five, ten, twenty years from now, I hope you will look again at this book and remember Mohawk College with affection. Sam Mitminger President 2

Farewell Message The past year has been a challenging and a rewarding one for me as president of the Students' Association. From the time we started planning summer clubs, pubs and orientation (and holding down our summer jobs) to the last hectic rush of hitting the books to try for a decent grade, planning elections for the new officers and finally the Convocation Ball, well, all I can say is ''It 's really been one hell of a great experience". We have, as I suppose all Executive Councils do and will, hit some snags, but all in all I think we have made progress. Our school paper the Phoenix ably managed by Gail Piche, and editor Michael Davie, has brought you a good variety of news, coming events, photos, etc. From the letters to the editor and the active participation of the students, it is generating a really good interest. Keep up the good work gang, (and I know it has been a lot of work). We have been able to sponsor our radio station C.H.M.R. to where they have reached the point of talking about the need for a station manager now. The legal advise which is financed by the S.A.M. and given to the students free-of-charge Mr. Richard Zacharewicz seems to be a lot of help too . • Our Winter Carnival was a popular welcome Student Council President back' to the winter semester, and the March break trip is practically becoming a Travel Club under the enthusiastic participation of our office manager Goldie Furphy. She sent out news letters to grads who have been on trips in the past and some of 'our gang' are already planning a week of their vacation for next March to join us for the second and third time! It really was a lot of fun to get together with our old and new friends and relax (well, some relaxation anyway). Your new executive are a great bunch of guys. What can I pass on to them? I guess just to keep up their present enthusiasm, which isn't always easy as they will be trying to keep up their studies and going from the planning of one series of events right into the next. They have a new constitution to prepare, plus budgets, and the organization of a whole year. I hope the students who are still here and the new ones to come in September will be interested and will participate and stand behind them. Try to get involved, read the paper, bulletin boards, listen to the events broadcast from the radio and T .V. stations, and if you need further information, drop in to the general office, Phoenix office or see your executive. Let's beat the lack of communication problems which are ever present at a large organization such as ours. It has been a long haul, yet I leave with a twinge of sadness • I've met some super people and have learned a vast amount of business knowledge from the past year. Graduates, I wish you much happiness and success. Good bye, good luck and God speed you along your chosen road in life.

Rick P .s.

Zachary sez Good Luck too -as he slowly limps into oblivion l 3

Student Legal

Aid

Your Student Association offered a free legal advice service to the students of Mohawk College this year by way of Mr. Paul Milne. The new Executive will continue to extend this aid next year. Mr. Milne is a respected lawyer in the Hamilton area with the law firm of Christilaw, Wigle-t Milne. Each Thursday at 4:30p.m. he would be situated in room Cl22C, the Student Lounge, to aid students in any legal problems they might have had such as traffic problems, landlord tenant disputes, drug charges, or contract signing doubts. All information is held in strict confidence and it is strongly advised that any students still wishing to see Mr. Milne, should do so early, as soon as the problem arises. Students are invited to drop in to room C 1220 to make an appointment if they feel legal help is needed.

There are, of course, many more people who have contributed their time, efforts, and support to the Phoenix and we would like to thank them all very much for their interest. It is impossible to list all concerned. A thank you also to the Information Services Department, Bart Strong of the Audio Visual Department and to Goldie Furphy for her enthusiastic support. A special mention of our most enthusiastic staff members must be made: Wayne Uchida, Scott Hickes, David Gruggen, Mark Burtniak, Tom Pett, Robin St. Jean, Paul Kawerau. They and our other staff members, past and present, have done a truly fine job. Because of these people, the Phoenix has been building and improving over the past school year. The most important thank you of all goes to Michael B. Davie for his enthusiasm, hard work and his fresh ideas. Michael threw himself into his work on the Phoenix, first as a Writer, then Head Writer, and finally as Editor. It was a pleasure and an inspiration, Mike. Whether it's graduation and a new life or the rejoining of the Mohawk community in the new school year, to you, Mike, and the rest of the staff, good luck on whatever the future holds. Nature's Last Song by AI Arthurs Run free, run wild Run away forest child. Man will bring you down And leave you on the ground" Run away from people Hear bells in the steeple. Sing your death song

It seems so very wrong. Run away from death, From our guns breath. Progress will swallow you Your kind is so very few. Get away from here Wolf, bear, beaver and deer. While you still have the chance While we perform your death dance. You animals must flee To a place that is free. Goodbye, I bid you well And run away from our hell.

Aquaplane by Gregory E. I don't feel lifeless without a name, So long as I can ride above my aquaplane. Simple visions cut into pieces make a hole, Those broken shells taunt a part of my soul. I stretch beyond the boatlife horizon, Behind the beta-rays which reflect the sea. The puzzle of consciousness remains the same, I still ride the waves with my aquaplane. The seatrain is my true aquaplane, There is never a strain on this vessel plane. No riffs, or melody between the waves, I never felt closed or spiritly raved. There are few like me who felt our reins, We find rei ease in our own strain. I captain our fresh sails on the aquaplane, To the ends of the earth we ride again . .

Lavender Blue by Gregory E. You and I are just beginning our true forms, We will walk this short mile to our borrowed home. The sensation of this heart is just a clue, In my soul the colour is lavender blue.

I do not feel foolish, yet I am amazed, I never think of you for self-praise. Every night, every day I still have a view, That your eyes are a shade of lavender blue. What itis that keeps us near Maybe the cool passion you speak in my ear. It is a feeling that runs into my fingertips too, The search for your feminine lavender blue. You're many fantasies are a thrill, My voice is weak like the sound of a trill. How may I tell this saga is anew, For you are my light, my lavender blue.

Two by Gregory E Why do my friends shake their heads in worry We're just smiling at each other in the rain. I've never felt like this before, And if this is what love means, I' 11 love you more Sweet clouds rain away my tears, Your only passion splashes away my fears I feel warm, I feel more alive, I don't mind the way you sigh. I would dread to miss a minute without you, My love, you're like a dream come true • .
