Banganga, Mumbai a brilliant coexistence between concepts and communities. The brief meant simply chasing the idea of a dwelling for a writer and a poet within the setting.

The landscape at the entrance only seems to direct visitors into the site and later to buffer between gradients. moving away from the ground, spaces get more individualistic. The higher the more sacred to the dwellers for meditation and worship spaces near to the shikhara of the temple beside. Ground is open to visitors and kids. The dwelling not as a mark of complexity, but a space holding onto the richness of its context.

Breaking these experiences into permeable volumes helps in respecting the a neighbouring elevation and a temple shikhara on the sides.

To translate into the needs of its two dwellers, a cobbler and a writer. The dwelling seemed to be determined by the spaces they liked to share and the ones they did not; directly manifesting the character into the space.

Seven Bungalows park, Versova not very far from the beach, a spot where the parents and their children from various backgrounds intersect as a part of recreation. The brief suggestive of a day-care center which would cater to the children around whose parents often need to trust them to someone, while they are working by the day.

The park acted as a means for these children to explore themselves within a dedicatied public realm. Great potential for a collective space for the children from the organic street settlements from behind and the economically well to do parts from the residential colonies on the other side of the park. To break the stigma that economics induces within their lives since their birth.

d e t a i l The brief was to design four individual dwellings, an extension for an existing dwelling and an elementary school. Site is located in Shanag village, Manali. Its known for its Kat-Kuni style of architecture, the opportunity to deal with the materials which have a history of being traditionally best suited in the area , but grown scarce.

Within this nook of the valley, design meant to use the local understanding of the daylight translated into the quality of thresholds and openings. The threshold was also of essence into retaining the neighbour relations into a pattern similar to the context.

Stone is easily available and the skills lie with the locals. For ground level extensions, adobe brick was used.

Deodar is available and is used as the structural timber. Whereas Spruce is used for the truss and joists. Suggestive of a path for the village locals where they realise that how another material might affect their rate of expansion as counting upon non-native material sources could produce further chains of unsustainability beyond just environmental adversities.

A village documentation by my batch during second year. An excerpt of drawings including the domestic architecture in the vernacular style of kat-kuni. It was a fun process to get to know the life of people at Shanag, Manali. An eye-opening first hand experience into the knowhows of community building, a process slowly fading and becoming lost into the past. Personally enjoyed the part of compiling the lifestyle of the community within a palette capturing the likeliness of that rich context.

Understanding details : The door a transition into the bottom part of the dwelling for domesticated animals. The elaborate latch which is only closed from the inside, letting the user close the door and head upstairs. part of fourth semester architecture design studio credits : site documentation by the team

Spaces provided for the collaboration of learners, who learn craft, design and experience (documentaion). Masters who also aid in creating material and arrange the library with critics. The commonwealth (exhibitions) interact with the students to have a feedback of their design with respect to the culture and daily lifestyle, as well as people who keep the place together and manage it.

Always a pleasure to put an impulse on paper. It teaches me to keep moving ahead. Getting it out on paper and reflecting on my own. It never started as a habit or skill but a desire to let it out. So it just happens !
