So far 2011 has been a year to remember. From record snow and winter storms, a drought through parts of Texas and Oklahoma, to now the wild Spring weather. Here in central Missouri, we would love to share some of our rainfall with our neighbors to the south. It is now the end of May; there is still a lot corn that needs planted, 1st cutting of hay that needs to be harvested, and most of the soybeans to be planted. After several days of good drying weather, the farmers here were ready to go hard today. That is until Mother Nature had a different idea and brought another rainstorm. But even as we complain about our circumstances, it is nothing to compare with those who have faced tornados and massive flooding. Our hearts and prayers go out to those who have had their lives turned upside down with the tornados in the Joplin, Missouri area and the numerous storms in Oklahoma. It’s hard to fathom the destruction of forced flooding as some of Missouri’s best and most fertile farmland now lies under 10 feet of water from the Mississippi River. It will takes years for those affected to rebuild and regroup, but the impact will be felt for a lifetime. For most of us, the biggest impact of the spring will be feed prices. For those in the drought areas, the expected crop of winter wheat silage was very poor. I heard one report in Oklahoma that they were trying to decide whether to take their first cutting of hay thinking there would be enough to even make a windrow. Hopefully the corn and soybean crop will still be strong. Over the past year the feed costs have been staggering and it looks like that will not be changing anytime soon. Luckily the milk price has rebounded and has done well. Farmers are resilient and hopefully most of us will be able to weather these storms. This Spring has also shown us the joys of dairy farming. The lineup of cattle at the Southern Spring National was tremendous. Judge Patrick commented several times that even though the numbers may not be great, the cattle coming through the ring were outstanding. The Oklahoma Holstein Association and the Southern National Committee are to be recommended for the outstanding job that they do. It’s southern hospitality at its best! It was great to see the outstanding cattle sales this spring. The solid prices showed that Registered Holsteins have gained momentum and there is still a demand for quality Registered animals. In addition to the consignment sales in Kansas and Oklahoma, there were several farm dispersals within the last few months. We wish those dairyman well and hope that they still continue to be associated with Registered Holsteins. We are quickly approaching the National Holstein Convention in Virginia. At this meeting, a new director will be elected to represent Region 7. I have thoroughly enjoyed the past six years serving as your Holstein Director. It has been a great experience and one that I would wish for everyone. If you have had questions, problems or even suggestions for Holstein USA, I hope that I have been able to help you and carry your thoughts on to the national office and board The main desire of the Board, staff and the Association is to continue to enhance the strength of the Registered Holstein breeder. Everyone in the field may not agree or understand a certain decision or policy, but there has been a lot of careful thought, planning and discussion before anything is implemented. We, as Holstein breeders, are lucky to have such a strong staff and an outstanding CEO John Meyer leading the way. The road is not always smooth, but by everyone working together we can overcome the speed bumps and enjoy a smoother ride. To me, that summarizes my time on the Holstein Board. We have all worked together to try and create a better opportunity for all dairymen. I really appreciate all your support and would encourage anyone to consider serving on the Holstein Board in the future. It’s has been one of most enjoyable, but yet challenging experiences I have ever had. The friendships I have made across the country, I’ll never forget. THANK YOU! Kate Geppert PAGE 4 - MSHN, June 2011

Hello Again! I hope this finds you all safe from the recent storms. My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by the tornados, flooding, and even drought in some areas. This weather is a sure sign that summer is on its way, and hopefully better conditions will follow. Here are a couple reminders as we head into the summer show season: • Please do not wait till the last minute to get animals registered for shows! The office experiences a high volume of registrations this time of year, and it is important you give yourself plenty of time for the applications to be processed. • For an animal being transferred to a Junior member or partnership, the transfer application must be received by the Holstein Association USA on or before JUNE 1st, 2011. This deadline now applies to both heifers and cows. • There are numerous ways to complete a transfer. By either contacting the National Office at 1-800952-5200, submitting the transfer through the Holstein USA website, or contacting your regional representative, you can ensure your transfer will meet the June 1st deadline. If you find yourself falling behind with registrations, or need help with transfers, please do not hesitate to contact your regional representative. We all are more than happy to show you the latest and most convenient ways to get your registrations and transfers done. For example, the EASY ID program allows you to electronically submit your registrations directly to the office without the hassle of sending them in the mail. TAG ID provides a more efficient way to identify your calves by eliminating picture taking or sketching. Lastly, by utilizing our website to transfer online, you will ensure you meet that transfer deadline. Not only will these programs make your life easier, but also the sooner animals are registered the more money you save! If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Jenny, Charlie or myself! Good luck with upcoming fairs and I look forward to seeing you all.

-Callie Unruh Congratulations to Kate Probert and Matt Smith. They were married Feb. 26 in Wisconsin. Kate is the daughter of Ted and Pam Probert of Mansfield, Missouri. Matt is the son of Marvin Smith and Bill and Becky Walter. Many dairymen were able to brave a winter snowfall and make it to Wisconsin for the wedding. Matt and Kate live in Wisconsin and are active with SmithCrest Holsteins.

A new food drive event at the 2011 Missouri State Fair will serve a three-fold purpose: to help alleviate hunger; to provide further education about the important role of Missouri farmers and, to offer a discount on gate admission at the Fair. The event, titled, Missouri Farmers Care Food Drive Tuesday, in cooperation with Ford and Missouri Farmers, will provide an opportunity for the public to donate canned food items to benefit the Missouri Food Bank Association (MFBA). Donors can receive a half-price gate admission on Aug. 16. “The idea originated from a request received more than a year ago from the director of the Missouri Food Bank Association,” Missouri State Fair Director Mark Wolfe said. “Coupled with an interest to further educate the public on agriculture, the State Fair Commission elected to combine the causes into a new event day at the Fair. “Food collection will actually initiate in early June at Ford dealerships across Missouri,” Wolfe explained. “This partnership will help increase our collection efforts over the summer, and then culminate at the gate on Aug. 16 for a more significant contribution for the six food bank locations.” According to MFBA State Director Scott Baker, many people do not realize that hunger is a very serious problem in Missouri. He believes that the first step to solving the problem is to raise awareness, which is what the new event day at the Fair can help achieve. “Food banks and pantries are able to help those in need

through the generosity of Missourians,” Baker said. “Thanks to Ford, Missouri Farmers Care and the State Fair, we can provide thousands of meals to hungry Missourians.” Starting in June, local Ford dealerships will give a $1 off gate admission coupon for every can collected. The coupons can then be redeemed at any admission gate on Tuesday, Aug. 16, for discounts up to one-half of the regular price for adult, senior and child admission tickets. Canned food items will also be accepted for coupons at Centennial Gate on Aug. 16. Some special activities on this day will include Missouri Farmers Trivia Contests on the Kids and Touchstone Energy Stages to entertain guests while providing them with interesting agriculture facts. In addition, more daily Fair activities will focus on the important role of Missouri farmers. Children ages 2 to 10 can be entertained daily at the new Missouri Farmers Care Market inside the Family Fun Center. Playtime there will be rewarded with an offer to visit the Agriculture Building where the children will receive a free, wholesome snack from the AgriMissouri Farmers’ Market. To learn more about Missouri Farmers Care Food Drive Tuesday, and to see a complete list of daily activities, visit mostatefair.com. Don’t miss the new Monster Truck Show at 7 p.m. Tuesday, featuring Bigfoot at the Pepsi Grandstand. The Missouri State Fair is Aug. 11-21 in Sedalia.

Mature Cows Rule Southern Spring National

The tension mounted as the day progressed at the 2011 Southern National. Judge Denny Patrick constantly commented on the outstanding quality of animals that were entering the ring. By the time the older cows started parading, the competition was intense. As the Aged Cow class was complete, recently fresh 2010 Champion DestHaven Skyfame Jenna continued her winning ways defeating 2011 Fort Worth Champion Robthom Carolina Boss. Next into the ring were the 125,000 lb class complete with the newest EX-95 RF Outside Breeze and the Res. Fort Worth Champion, Robthom Jianna Outside. After much deliberation, Breeze edged Jiana for class honors. It was on to the Senior Champion showdown. Admiring her tremendous size and scale and beautiful mammary system, Judge Patrick congratulated Todd Mason on his winning 125,000 lb cow and the Southern National had a new champion. Celebrating the Spring Show Season - Roundtable Style Each June, we celebrate the Spring Show successes across our region with our roundtable discussion. This issue features the George family of Baldwin City, KS who had Res. Grand Champion at the Kansas Spring Show; Nate Goldenberg, McGregor, TX who had Grand Champion at the Missouri Spring Show; Todd Mason, Kingfisher, OK who had Grand Champion at the Southern Spring National; and Chad Steinberger who had Grand Champion at the Texas Spring Show. Describe your farming operation. George: We are in a transition since our dispersal in May. Our Farming operation consists of corn, beans and hay. We will continue to do flush work on stock cows, and a few Holsteins. We plan to begin housing donors and receipts, and overseeing of heifer growers for a large Arizona dairy. Goldenberg: We have a small farm in central Texas and raise about 60 dairy heifers (Reg Holstein & Brown Swiss). Most of our cows are housed at Stacy & Dean Dohle’s in Missouri. Mason: We milk 640 cows near Kingfisher, Oklahoma. In total, we have around 1100 animals. We have free-stall housing and also a pack barn for special care animals. In addition to the cattle, we farm 1,100 acres of wheat and 500 acres of silage. Steinberger: My father, Bobby, has been milking Holsteins for over 50 years. Currently we milk 1100 Registered Holsteins on two farms. A few years ago, we purchased Willie Hoff’s farm which was directly across the road from us and we milk 200 head there. The cattle at both operations are managed the same and we milk 2X. We grow 2500 acres of wheat. In addition, we have about 3000 head in feedlots and around 500 beef cows/calves. Due to the dry winter this year, our wheat crop was not good and we are double cropping with sorghum. Right now, our silage bunkers are empty and we are purchasing all our feed. Describe your winning cow. George: Bonsai is a tall, dairy, deep rib young cow with the will to milk. Goldenberg: Rae-Red is EX-93. She was something special from the time she was born. She was Res All American Summer Yearling Red & White, Senior Champion at the 1st Red & White Show in Louisville in 2010. She is a huge cow with great feet and legs. A true trouble free cow that works hard too, she’s been high cow on test day the last 3 months. Her dam is Excellent, but black. Then there are four more Excellent dams. Renita Ranger is her 3rd dam. Mason: Breeze is unbelievable. She’s one of those cows you always hope you get someday. Her Granddam is Tony Beauty and her daughter is Talent Barbara. There are a lot of good cows PAGE 8 - MSHN, June 2011

in the family and I hope we can keep it going. Earlier this spring, the classification committee made her EX-95. We purchased Breeze in the Rainyridge sale several years ago. Steinberger: We’ve shown Jenicis since she was a 2-yr old. She’s an easy cow to take care of. She is EX-92, bred back and due again this winter. In 2009, she was Grand Champion at Fort Worth and in 2008 Intermediate Champion at the Southern Spring National. What does it take to develop a show winning champion? George: It is a 365 days a year job... It hard to just pull them from herd and load up to go to the show, you must take care of them differently. There are many stages depending on lactation stage, try to keep them from getting heavy, too thin, milking good, etc... Goldenberg: I am a dairy consulting nutritionist. So I say breed them to be great & feed them to win. I get paid to help you feed them, so if you need a consultant feel free to call. As far as breeding she is an Advent daughter, I was the first person to buy his semen when he was @ Glaz-way in California. I still have some of that early semen in the tank. Mason: It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and devotion. There is a lot of time and effort in dealing with show cattle. We have a pack barn, so are able to deal with them individually. Steinberger: It takes a lot of hard work, good people and good feed. You also need to have an eye for a good one. We don’t purchase any animals, but we bred for high type. What are the biggest benefit showing cattle has for your farm? George: To see your genetics working and compare them to other herds. Goldenberg: It gets your name in front of our industry. With the internet if you get Googled, people see your accomplishments and learn about you. Mason: You can earn a good reputation for having good cattle. We’ve been able to increase our bull sales. We now sell a couple hundred bulls a year. It has also helped increase the demand for our breeding stock. Steinberger: It gets us a vacation and

also makes you come home and work harder. It keeps our kids interested and helps them be productive and useful. How can showing animals benefit a junior member? George: It gives them the responsibility to take care of animals at home and get them to the show ring. It is like sports; you win some and lose some. You learn from it and try harder next time. You make friends for life, and maybe someday business partners later in life. Goldenbeg: It has taught my kids as well as me responsibility & leadership. It keeps us together as a family too. You meet so many people, and network with it. Most of my lifetime friends are people I met showing. Mason: It’s a great experience. You will meet and make a lot of friends that will become lifelong friends. It will get you in the public and help you to work with the public. Steinberger: It gives them the opportunity to spend time away from home with the family. We like to go to small shows around here and show as a family. Showing gives them something to look forward to. It can also spur their interest in judging. My son Garrett has become very involved in judging, especially in FFA and that started from his showing cattle. What was the biggest disappointment you have ever had with showing cattle? George: Probably in 2005 at Ft Worth, we took our Arlene cow to Texas, and on show day she was on the money... looked better than ever. She got thumped and didn’t even win the class. It’s just part of showing. Goldenberg: They die. Also the politics, some judges have their buddies, my saying is they could lead a jack-ass in and win the class. Mason: Our biggest disappointment has been we you put your faith and trust in someone and they abuse that trust. Steinberger: We’ve had times when we didn’t get the cow to the ring. In 2009, Jenicis was Grand at Fort Worth and looked really good. We took her to San Antonio and we thought we had a good shot at champion. The morning of the show, she flared up with mastitis. It

Tex-Stein Mozer Jenicis EX-93

was really tough to tell your 9 year old son that we needed to leave her in the stall. At San Antonio, the Grand Champion of each breed receives a $10,000 college scholarship and we thought we had a really good shot at it that year. We were able to get the cow home and back to normal. Ethics are always an important subject. What is the biggest ethical abuse you see today? George: Doctoring udders. Just because there is no milk sample or ultra-sounding, it should not be done. When ultrasound is done, milk samples should be pulled on all ultrasound animals. Also owners and fitters should sign a code of ethics at check in, (you do it you’re out) this way all bases are covered. I have seen it happen and think it should be stopped. Fitters and owners should be banned and not able to return for 3 years. Names should be published on all current web sites for 3 years and updated with list of the show that was abused. If an animal needs all this help with their udder, it shouldn’t be at the show. Goldenberg: Overage heifers. False ear tags in cows (making cows any age they want by putting Registration tags in a few weeks before the show.) Udder manipulation, Enough said. Mason: Udder manipulation. Steinberger: No enforcement of ethics. We need to develop policy and rules and stick to it. We need to determine what is and is not ethical. With heifers, it’s really frustrating with the age questions that we don’t even want to show them. There is much discussion about the size of cattle. Are cattle too tall? What is the perfect size? George: I think a 60-61 inch cow is a nice mature sized cow. If they are too big you have problems with feet and legs, and cramping becomes an issue. Goldenberg: I hate to say it, but Holstein may be right to get cows back to less than 62 inches tall. But you do not have anything unique if we have cookie cutter cattle. Mason: That’s a two-sided question. It depends on if you mean commercial or registered. For commercial dairymen a 58-59 inch cow is great, but for a

C-Cove- Allegiance Bonsai EX-90

Registered cow, I think 63-64 is fine. In today’s world, they need to be good; they don’t have to be big. Steinberger: We don’t have a problem with size as long as the judge picks out the good cattle. Anymore judges are not just picking the big one, they are doing a better job of picking the best one. Everyone has their own opinion on the correct size of cattle. A larger, healthier cow will work better in certain herds, but probably not commercial. Who are some of your mentors or role models in showing cattle? George: There are several I consider role models, But one that comes to mind, is a farmer, breeder, fitter, shower, judge, and just a good honest man.. Justin Burdett, from Windy-Knoll-View of PA. Goldenberg: Ron Heffner, one who has lasted four decades and still on top. Bob Griggs, an upbeat guy. My dad Theo Goldenberg, he was not a person who liked showing because of all the unethical stuff, but if you does anything to do it your best, and win with humility. The Kinzie family & Ed McDonald too, when he was their herdsman in Cushing, Ok. Mason: When I was growing up, Jerry Smith from Massachusetts. He had a

great herd of cows. He judged a lot of the shows and he always tried to help. Since I moved to Oklahoma, it’s Norman Bayless. He has really helped me a lot. Steinberger: My Dad, Bobby. I also have a lot of respect for Jeff Stookey. Even though he doesn’t show much anymore, I have a lot of respect for Bobby Griggs and what he does around the show ring. We have a lot of respect for our fellow competitors in Texas, especially Gerard Hoekman, John Koster and Stanley Haedge. We all enjoy the camaraderie of showing. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? George: Hard to say, Registered Holsteins are in my blood. But maybe we will just be watching from the sidelines in 10 years. I will still be following, but with my kids out of showing by then, I guess will wait and see what grandkids interest are. Goldenberg: I hope I am still here then, doing what we are doing now. My grandkids are not far from showing as well as Grant Dohle. Stacy and Dean Dohle are like family to us. Doug Thomas is a great partner and mentor. It takes a team and we have put a winning one together. These questions really should have gone to Dean and Doug. Thank you for your time, God Bless you and the Holstein cow. Mason: I hope to still be working with Registered Holsteins. I hope my herd has continued to get better. I want to have the best herd possible. I’d like that whenever anyone comes and visit the herd that as they look through the cows, they say Wow, that’s a great herd. I also hope to continue working with the Oklahoma Holstein Association. Steinberger: We hope to still be here doing the same thing. I doubt we will increase in size, just continue doing the same things.

Dairy Judging Camp to be Held

A three-day dairy judging camp being held June 28 – 30 at the University of Missouri in Columbia will focus on helping children develop skills in communication, and decisionmaking, while helping them increase their self-confidence. “Dairy judging helps build good character,” said Karla Deaver, a 4-H youth development specialist with MU Extension. “In addition to communication skills, the practice in decision-making and defending those decisions is invaluable preparation for life’s choices.” Each day of the camp, participants will visit a local farm and judge classes. Afternoons will include touring the veterinary school, practicing oral reasons, meeting with judging team alumni and working on individual skill development. One Missouri 4-H alumnus credits judging experiences with helping her develop life skills. Leslie Sheppard Appleton, currently a teacher in Cabool, said, “I have had the chance to meet some of the greatest people in the world, visit many different states, and gain vital experiences in public speaking. Giving oral reasons helped me sharpen my speaking abilities. In today’s society, communication is the key to success. If you are not able to communicate with people then you probably will not be very successful in your career or in any other aspect of life.” By becoming involved in judging teams, many young people develop a lifelong interest in the industry, and often go on to agriculture-related careers. Judging team alumni are in many leadership positions within the industry, and continue to assist in training 4-H and FFA judges. “These types of experiences are irreplaceable and there is no dollar value to them. To some agriculture students, judging contests are our avenue to compete. This is no different than the athletes getting the opportunity to play in the NAIA, or NCAA Tournament,” said Appleton. For more information on this event, contact Karla Deaver at the Lawrence County Extension Center in Mt. Vernon, (417) 466-3102, Ted Probert at the Wright County Extension Center in Hartville, (417)741-6134. MSHN, June 2011 - PAGE 11

Starting Making Plans for Missouri in 2012

The 2012 National Holstein Convention in Missouri is only 12 months away! Many great activities have been planned for your visit to Missouri. The pre-convention tours and host day tours will give you the opportunity to visit great herds and see some of the sights for which the Springfield and Branson area are famous. There will be three opportunities for preconvention tours. One tour will visit some of Missouri’s great Holstein herds. BestSunrise Dairy is located in South Central Missouri at Houston, where ‘A Passion For Breeding Good Cows’ has been a lifelong goal. Best-Sunrise is owned and operated by Richard & Shirley Best along with their son, Michael. They milk 100 Registered Holsteins with a BAA of 107.0 and have been awarded Holstein’s PBR Award 15 times. The next stop will be Golden-Dream Holsteins. Originally from Pennsylvania the Hamner family located to Willow Springs Mo six years. Type is a specialty at Golden-Dream. Their herd consists of 70 milking cows with 14 Excellent and 16 Very Good. They have won numerous All-Missouri awards. The 2nd pre-convention tour allows you to have fun in the water with a guided fly fishing trip for Rainbow and Brown trout in the waters of Taneycomo Lake near Branson.. The boats used on the western streams and rivers are perfect for the waters in the Taneycomo portion of the White River. They are specifically designed for fly fishing; very stable and maneuver easily in the shallow areas of Taneycomo as well the faster water during generation. The River Run Outfitter guides are excellent instructors and are always ready to share their knowledge and passion for fly fishing with others. A trip to Carthage and the Precious Moments chapel is on tap for the 3rd pre-convention tour. Precious Moments artwork is among the most recognized art in the world, sharing

messages of loving, caring and sharing with collectors from around the globe. In 1984, Sam Butcher moved to Carthage and began building a chapel inspired by Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Today the Chapel is a stunning sight. Around every turn are murals, angels, stained glass, and other bits of Sam’s artwork. The Fountain of Angels, Wedding Island, and The Gallery all make the Park experience an unforgettable one. The host day tours will give you more opportunities to check out some outstanding Holsteins as well as some well-known tourist attractions. Tours will visit Robthom Holsteins, the herd made famous by the Robert and Marianna Thomson family. With numerous AllAmericans, a former national production leader, and having bred well-known bulls like Robthom Integrity and Robthom Moscow, a stop at this Springfield farm is a must. The farm of Lonnie, Todd & Brad Groves is another chance to see top-notch Holsteins. Deep pedigrees with high production and extreme type shape their breeding program. They currently have a RHA over 24,900M and a BAA of 107.9 with 18 Excellent 54 Very Good cows. A visit to the College of the Ozarks is not to be missed. This private college is known as Hard Work U. In lieu of tuition, many of the students work in some position at the college. A great herd of Holsteins, along with a beautiful chapel and a gorgeous campus will make this a favorite stop. There will be more opportunities to visit Branson including a trip to Silver Dollar City and an experience aboard the Showboat Branson Belle. Fantastic Caverns, the only drive through cave in the country and a stop at the original Bass Pro Shop are also on the schedule for host day. For more information, check out holsteinconvention2012.com.

Missouri is Ready to Show Your More - Come Explore!

In addition to the Springfield-Branson area that Holstein Convention attendees will have the opportunity to visit and explore, Missouri is rich with cities and communities who are ready to ‘ShowYou Missouri’. Hannibal, known as America’s Hometown, keeps the days of Mark Twain alive. Tour Twain’s home, cruise the Mighty Mississippi, explore the caves from Mark Twain’s books, visit historic homes, attend one of the many festivals and relive the magic of Tom and Huck. The Lake of the Ozarks is Missouri’s largest lake destination, with more than 1,150 total miles of shoreline, including a main channel that stretches 92 miles. There is an abundance of water activities here. You’ll find lodging from rustic cottages to camping to major resort facilities; restaurants from franchised fast food eateries to one-of-a-kind gourmet dining to wineries; top rated championship golf courses to challenging put-put minigolf; craft shops to outlet malls; state parks to water parks. Recreation is the name of the game. “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent...” with those words English Prime Minister Winston Churchill put the town of Fulton into immortality. The site of the famous “Iron Curtain” speech, has become a PAGE 24 - MSHN, June 2011

landmark complete with a restored 12th century London church and pieces of the Berlin Wall. The fascination with the days of the old west and St. Joseph will give you a first hand look. Tour the stables where the Pony Express began in 1860, and the house where the notorious Jesse James met his end in 1882. Interested in one of Missouri’s favorite sons? Then look no further than Independence and the Harry S Truman Presidential Library. During your visit, you can learn about the life behind this incredible man. Walk through his neighborhood, stop in at the soda fountain on historic Independence Square where he had his first job, and see the sites where this former president met his wife and went to school It’s more than a cow town now. Established as the starting point for wagon trains heading over the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails, Kansas City today is a metropolitan area that still retains its small town atmosphere with tree-lined boulevards, bubbling fountains and a large number of parks. Kansas City is famous for its steaks, barbecue, & jazz. Home to many of Missouri’s springfed streams and crystal clear waters, Southeast Missouri truly is a haven for nature lovers. The extreme southeastern

corner, known as the “Bootheel” because of its shape, is rich in Missouri history and agriculture. Southeast Missouri gives you the feel of the Deep South with the southern drawls, cotton fields and home cooking. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways are also home to some of the most beautiful countryside and trails and streams in the country. St. Louis is not only the Gateway to the West, but your gateway to fun and adventure. Ride to the top of the Gateway Arch, towering 630-feet over the Mississippi River. Explore Forest Park’s 1,300 acres of lakes, walking paths and attractions. On a budget?, St. Louis offer many world-class free attractions, including the Art Museum, Zoo, Science Center, the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Grant’s Farm, and the Missouri History Museum. On your way to Springfield, drive Old Route 66 and visit some of the “Mother Road’s” most fascinating stops. Hermann has been chosen several times for the title of Missouri’s most beautiful town. It offers the charm of old Germany and beautiful vineyards in the hills above town. Grape growing and wine making in Hermann and the surrounding countryside have been ongoing since the arrival of the first German settlers in the early 1800s. Today, there are seven award-winning wineries within a 15-mile radius of Hermann.

George Dairy Cattle Dispersal

Thank you to everyone for the support and interest, and we hope you enjoyed the beautiful spring day in Kansas on May 2. We wish everyone the best of luck and success in the future with your purchases from our sale. We have enjoyed many blessed days from being in the dairy business, from daily duties, to the many shows and contest we have been involved in with the registered Holstein business. We consider the people and partners we have gained through this business to be lifelong friends and these relationships we hope will continue to grow stronger. We would never have traded a day of raising our kids on the dairy farm and hope you have the same success and find the same kind of feelings and proud moments that we have had in your future. The cattle from our sale went to 14 states as well as Mexico.

Special THANK YOU’s and the reasons our sales success: Dallas Burton, DAIRY AGENDA TODAY, Larry Kleiner, Robert Yeoman, Linda Burton, Jeff Brannock, Jason Ewing, Kurt Wolfe, Allyn Paulson, Gary Estes, Nate Goldenberg, Les Terpstra, Jeff Woods, Jason Flory, Edwardo Garcia, Alan Dykshorn, Kenny Hall, John Grubaugh, and Ed Crossland. Harlan

Brady

Sophie

Kate

This spring, we were honored and blessed in many ways. Harlan was recognized by the National DHIA Association with the H. Victor Joachim Distinguished Leadership Award at their national convention in New Orleans. We just celebrated Brady’s graduation from North Callaway High School. Sophie and Sleeping Beauty had a successful debut in the show ring. Sleeping Beauty was named Junior Champion of the Northeast District Show in April! (Thanks to Steven Nelson with helping Sophie in the showring.) Finally in March, Kate was humbled to receive the Young Dairy Leaders Institute Distinguished Alumni Leader at YDLI in New Mexico.
