June Dairy Month “Meet your Farmer”
This was a joint SW & SE group activity. We had a couple of great girls and their calves and lots of handouts. Extension staff were also on hand with cheese samples as well, promoting dairy nutrition! We had lots of great interaction with store customers and everyone loved petting the calves. Even some adults just couldn’t help themselves. Thank you to Reagan Bluel for organizing, Ruby’s & Price Cutter for hosting, and Koopal’s for bringing the calves!

All-National Showcase Program Launched by Holstein USA
Holstein Association USA announces an exciting new award recognizing U.S. Registered Holstein® cows and their owners for exceptional performance at National Holstein Shows. The All-National Showcase Program is designed to add value to Registered Holstein cattle and reward their participation in National Shows. “Having another recognition program for Registered Holsteins is very exciting for us. A lot of sports have points-driven contests throughout the season to determine the overall best of the best, and this program will mirror that,” says Jodi Hoynoski, executive director, Holstein Identification & Member Services. To be eligible, animals must be registered in the Holstein Association USA herdbook on or before November 15 in the award year. Animals will be eligible to earn points at each National Holstein Show exhibited at throughout the year. Points are allocated for a top 10 placing in their respective uniform age class, based on the size of the show. Bonus points will be awarded to champions. In each of the uniform show classes, the top 10 animals earning the most points will be recognized on the Holstein Association USA website and will receive a certificate. For the top two animals, the website will feature a picture and pedigree link, and the recognition will be added to the animal’s Official Holstein PedigreeTM. All-National results will be posted on the website in December. Full details on the All-National Showcase Program rules and point system can be found at www.holsteinusa.com/showcase. Mid-Season Showcase Rankings can be found here! www.facebook.com/HolsteinUSA/photos/

Cow camp remained at the Lawrence Cty Fairgrounds and Wrightvale provided the calves. The fact we had 42 youth from four states attend the camp indicates there is still a great deal of interest in being a part of this industry. A highlight of the 2019 camp included a visit from Jamie Johansen and From the Tailgate. Johansen interviewed campers and counselors during camp activities. Missouri Dairy Cow Camp will be featured on an upcoming show. Campers work in pairs under the direction of adults and take part in workshops. If you would like to help volunteer time or finances to cow camp or dairy judging camp contact Karla Deaver at 417466-3102 or deaverk@ missouri.edu.

ign up begins June 17 for the new Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC) program, the cornerstone program of the dairy safety net that helps dairy producers manage the volatility of milk and feed prices, operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Farm Service Agency (FSA). The 2018 Farm Bill allowed USDA to construct the new DMC, which replaces the Margin Protection Program for Dairy (MPPDairy). This new program offers protection to dairy producers when the difference between the all-milk price and the average feed cost (the margin) falls below a certain dollar amount selected by the producer. The program provides coverage retroactive to January 1, 2019, with applicable payments following soon after enrollment. At the time of sign up, dairy producers can choose between the $4.00 to $9.50 coverage levels. (plus $100 admin fee) The Farm Bill also allows producers who participated in MPP-Dairy from 2014-2017 to receive a repayment or credit for part of the premiums paid into the program. FSA has been providing premium reimbursements to producers since last month and those that elect the 75 percent credit option will now have that credit applied toward 2019 DMC premiums. **NEW** The Department has built in a 50 percent blend of premium and supreme alfalfa hay prices with the alfalfa hay price used under the prior dairy program to provide a total feed cost that more closely aligns with hay rations used by many producers. At a milk margin minus feed cost of $9.50 or less, payments are possible. With the 50 percent hay blend, FSA’s revised April 2019 income over feed cost margin is $8.82 per hundredweight (cwt). The revised margins for January, February and March are, respectively, $7.71, $7.91 and $8.66 – triggering DMC payments for each month. Producers have the choice to lock in coverage levels until 2023 and receive a 25-percent discount on their DMC premiums. Producers may contact their local FSA office to get their verified production history. Dairy producers also are reminded that 2018 Farm Bill provisions allow for dairy operation to participate in both FSA’s DMC program and the Risk Management Agency’s Livestock Gross Margin (LGM-Dairy) program. There are also no restrictions from participating in DMC in conjunction with any other RMA insurance products. For more information contact your local USDA service center. Sign up open from June 17 - September 20, 2019. **DECISION SUPPORT TOOL** It can be used to evaluate various scenarios using different coverage levels through DMC. www.fsa.usda.gov/programs-and-services/farm-bill/farm-safety-net/dairy-programs/dmc-decision-tool/
