Junior News - IT’S AWARD TIME!! Application Deadline: December 12, 2016 Missouri Junior Holstein Association offers several opportunities for young members to get involved, receive awards and gain scholarships towards college. Please take the time to look through them and take advantage of what we have to offer. All applications are to be postmarked by December 12, 2016 and sent to Shannon Kleiboeker. Further instructions and requirements can be found on the applications for each award. Applications will be available on the Missouri Holstein Website, or contact Shannon for a paper or emailed copy. Missouri Holstein Princess - Represent & assist MO Holstein at events & a spokesperson for the breed & organization. Requirements: Available for girls ages 16-21 as of January 1, 2017; Assist with the following: Missouri Holstein Field Day, Missouri State Fair (Junior and Open Shows), At least 3 District Shows, & State Holstein Convention How to Apply: Application is available on MO Holstein website or contact Shannon Kleiboeker for paper copy. Interview, which will be conducted during the State Holstein Convention in January. Prizes: Crown, Sash, Flowers and $500 Scholarship to college of your choice Missouri Holstein Miss - Assist the Princess at various Missouri Holstein events. Requirements: Available for girls ages 8-15 as of January 1, 2017; Assist with the following: Assist with your district show, Assist with any other shows/events possible How to Apply: Application is available on MO Holstein website or contact Shannon Kleiboeker for paper copy. Interview, which will be conducted during the State Holstein Convention in January. Prizes: Crown, Sash and Flowers Distinguished Junior Member - Senior Division - The Distinguished Junior Member Award recognizes MO Holstein Youth for their accomplishments working with Holsteins, achievements & leadership in Holstein activities, as well as school and community involvement. The state winner of the Distinguished Junior Member award can apply for the national level, where youth are recognized at the Nat’l Holstein Convention for their achievements. Requirements: Missouri Junior Holstein Member in good standing ages 17-21 as of January 1, 2016 How to Apply: Complete a short entry book as described on application. Book should contain youth’s involvement with the Missouri Holstein Association as well as work and accomplishments with the Holstein Breed. Application is available on Missouri Holstein website or contact Shannon Kleiboeker for a paper copy. Award presented at State Holstein Convention. Prizes: $100 cash award OR $200 toward National Convention expenses if competing in a Nat. Convention Contest in 2016. Junior Donation 50 / 50 Raffle

The Juniors hosted a 50/50 raffle at State Fair. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets for the Missouri Holstein juniors. The jrs. received 1/2 of the pot $242; and was drawn during the Junior Supreme Champion. Winner, Tommy Scrivner, Ava won $242.

2016 Missouri Cow of the Year

Time to nominate cows for the 2016 award! Rules for nomination below. This is open to any adult or junior member! 1. Animal has to be bred & owned by nominator 2. 87% or higher RHA 3. Animal to be alive January 1st of year nominated 4. Animal must be nominated in any one of the four issues of Mid-States Holstein News. The animal may be nominated w/ or w/out photos but advertisement must indicate nomination for Cow of the Year.

Missouri Dairy Revitalization - FUNDING UPDATE

This legislation establishes two new programs in support of Missouri’s dairy industry, the Premium Assistance Program and Dairy Scholars Program, administered by the Missouri Agricultural and Small Business Development Authority (MASBDA). PART 1: Reimbursement for MPP Premiums: FUNDING UPDATE: Due to state budget constraints the Governor withheld ALL funding on the Margin Protection Program reimbursements. There will not be ANY funding for premium payments in the near future. PART 2: Dairy Scholarship/Intern Program: The Missouri Dairy Scholars program only received 1/2 funding from the Governor. Now providing up to 40 scholarships of $5,000 each ($200,000) for students pursuing two or four year agriculture degrees. An eligible student must be a U.S. citizen and a Missouri resident who has graduated from a Missouri high school with at least a 2.5 GPA. Eligible students must sign an agreement to work in the agriculture industry in Missouri at least two years for every year they receive the scholarship, among other provisions. The program also requires that students who receive a scholarship complete a dairy-related internship. • Scholarship program begins September 30, 2016 • Application deadline is November 10, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. • Eligible approved student applicants may receive a $5,000 scholarship • Up to 40 scholarships may be awarded • On September 30th the application and guidelines will be available at the following link: http://agriculture.mo.gov/abd/financial/ • Placement Certification Form: http://www.missouriholstein.com/MODairyInternshipPlacement.pdf PART 3: University of Missouri: This portion of the bill also received NO funding. ~ 2016 MO 3-Year-Old Futurity ~

This year the committee moved the futurity show to the State Fair. Eligible entries showed during the open show prior to the 3-yr-old classes. The total head originally entered in 2014 was 119 head with a total pot of $2975. There were also three junior members who entered originally. On August 19 a total of 8 head competed for their portion of the winnings. The top 3 open winners receiving either an embroidered chair or semen certificate from Select Sires Mid-America and the Junior winner receiving an embroidered chair from ABS. Production and feet and leg awards were also presented within the class. Thank you to everyone who participated and donated.
