Editors Page Wow ! The first ever Hair Style and Beauty Magazine produced in St. Lucia is here“Moi” . What a crazy experience it has been ! “Moi” means “me” in French, therefore the magazine speaks to every individual. The beauty service or product supplier and the consumer. Moi is self titled. The idea for a hair style and beauty magazine has been in my treasure chest for five years. And last year it suddenly hit me that it is time to pursue it. Without procrastination I rounded up a small team and got to work. The response? Huge ! I chose a hair style and beauty magazine because there was not much of a media spot light on the cosmetology sector. Cosmetology in St. Lucia has almost been forgotten as an art. Don’t get me wrong there are many magazines focused on beauty and lifestyle in the region. But how many times have you seen your nail technician, hair stylist, barber or massage therapist marketing his/her services in these mags? Exactly. Now incase you are wondering, I am not a beauty technician. My experience is in the field of media. So with a marriage of my love for the cosmetology arts and media arts“Moi” was born ! I want to thank everyone who came on board and supported this project and offered support, no matter how little. You have contributed to the start of great things to come. I look forward to working with you on future projects. I invite you to enjoy this issue and be sure to pick up a copy of the coming issue which promises to be richer in look and content. And remember beauty starts from within :)

Haircutting is an absolutely essential part of hair care, as it makes hairstyling easier, and hair maintenance less difficult. Why then is there always such a re luctance in having your hair cut into a style, when this is suggested by your hairdresser? Cutting the hair regularly every four to six weeks, prevents the ends from splitting, and so the hair remains in a healthy state. . When your hair has been cut into a particular style, blow-drying becomes hassle-free, as
A haircut done with a thorough client consultation and mutual agreement ,can in no way cause any despair. A haircut that is professionally done will actually enhance your best features, and can also deemphasize certain facial aspects that are not flattering. When cutting the hair, consideration needs to be given to the density, texture and hair type. The shape of the skull or head form plays a major role in guiding the stylist towards the appropriate haircut, for creativity and styles are limitless. Also, the hair can be cut with scissors, hair-clippers, or a razor. The desired lengths can be blunt cut, graduated, or in uniform layers. The hair can be cut in horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines. Bangs can be cut blunt or wispy.
There are many options, and so

everyone can have something of their choice. Let us change our attitude a bit, and discover new and exciting ways to enjoy healthy, gorgeous, fashionable hairstyles. All this is of course, the result of haircutting that is done by a professional.
The 5 Grossest Things You’re Eating! 1. Packaged bread-Many packaged breads and baked goods contain L-cysteine-a non-essential amino acid made from dissolved human hair (often from China) or duck feathers (mmmm). Food manufacturers use the ingredient as a commercial dough conditioner, meant to improve the texture of breads and baked goods. 2. Shrimp-Depending on where your shrimp comes from, it could be tainted with chemicals used to clean filthy shrimp-farm pens. Just as disgusting, farmed shrimp from overseas is often full of antibiotics, mouse and rat hair, and pieces of insects (yummy!).
3.Salad Dressing-Big food corporations often add the chemical titanium dioxide-commonly found in paints and sunscreens-to processed foods like salad dressing, coffee creamers, and canned icing to make them appear whiter.
Selma’s Hair & Nails
4, Jelly Beans-Many artificial foo d dyes-found in hundreds of everyday foods-are made from petroleum-derived materials. Food producers use these chemical dyes in cereals and candy to make them more “fun” for kids, in pickles to make them appear fresher, and in place of real ingredients in a variety of other packaged foods. Betty Crocker Carrot Cake Mix, for example, is actually a carrot-free product, with “carrot flavored pieces” cooked up from corn syrup and artificial colors Yellow 6 and Red 40. Orange and purple food dyes have been shown to impair brain function, and other dyes have been linked to ADHD and behavioral problems in kids, as well as brain-cell toxicity. 5. The FDA legally allows 19 maggots—tiny, riceshaped fly larvae that feast on rotting foods—and 74 mites in every 3.5-ounce can of mushrooms. If you need another reason to ditch canned goods, consider this: Most are lined with bisphenol A (or BPA), a plastic chemical that causes unnatural hormonal changes linked to heart Bon appetit!

stop your hair from breaking now ! Try these simple tips for a beautiful healthy mane ! - Either section the hair and plait it, tie it back or wrap it up using a scarf before going to bed, this will reduce the number of tangles you have to comb out the next morning, reducing the chances of breaking your hair. - Sleep with a satin scarf or sleep cap on your your head or with a satin pillow case. This helps avoid split ends caused by the rubbing of your hair against a “rough” cotton pillow case. It also avoids moisture being wicked out of your hair into your cotton pillow case.
wet and relatively slick. - Oil your scalp on a regular basis with a good natural oil like shea butter. A daily moisturizer is not a bad idea. - Do a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment once a month. - Massage your scalp on a regular basis to promote circulation and oil production. - Avoid overuse of products with mineral oil or petroleum. They tend to block the pores and are not readily absorbed. If your mother used Vaseline® on your hair, stop.
- Wash your hair no more often than every week to week and a half. More than that can dry it out.
- If you exercise and sweat, rinse the salt out of your hair even if you don’t wash it. Condition it afterwards with a daily leave-in conditioner.
- Comb your hair out while you’re conditioning it to remove the tangles while it’s
- Always use a leave-in conditioner after washing your hair.
- Put as little heat as possible on your hair. Heat, especially combined with perms is very damaging to hair. - Avoid alcohol based products unless you have a need for a water-free shampoo to cleanse your scalp. - Remember that water (moisture) is your friend and get plenty- inside and out. If you used to press your hair or blow it out and learned to fear water on your hair because it would draw up, you need to get over this. Spritzing a little water on your hair every day is a good idea. - Get a spray bottle and just spray it just a little. - Eat a proper diet. Vitamins and protein are essential for proper hair growth. - Find a style that works with your natural hair type and growth pattern. The less you
work against your hair, the less stressed it will be. - Do not relax your hair until it is bone straight. This is just asking for trouble. Why relax your hair until it has absolutely no body or curl and then put heat on it to try to get that curl back?

Find out if you have this common type of Eczema ! Seborrheic Eczema ( Seborrheic Dermatitis) This condition is characterized by hair loss, prolonged itching and dryness of the scalp. It varies in severity amongst different individuals and some persons may even experience sores and bleeding in the scalp. The problem may extend to the rest of the body whereby the person may experience flaking of the skin over the eyelashes, eyebrows, ears and sides of the nose. Others may have breakouts on the face in the form of a rash resembling an allergic reaction whilst others may have acne. A light brown or deep yellow discoloration may occur on the back of some individuals. The cause of Seborrheic Eczema is traced back to a fungus called Malassezia furfur. The outbreaks are provoked by stresses ranging from emotional, physical and mental. There are some medical conditions normally associated with Seborrheic Eczema like HIV/ AIDS, Polycystic Ovarian Disease, Malnutrition and Paraplegia. It may also be inherited. There is no cure for this problem but the condition can be treated with special medicated shampoos, acne medication, anti-itch and anti-fungal creams.

Hi Moi, I am a 28 year old woman and I started going grey when i was 21. I never told any of my friends because it was a bit embarrasing so I started dying and coloring my hair. I tried all kinds of color treatments. Bleach, permanent, semiperm , you name it. It has been a costly venture as well as a daunting one because in some instances it broke of some of my hair and caused damage to my scalp, simply due to lack of time to take care of it. Now I think its time I come clean and grow my natural color. I am still scared of what others may think. Sincerly, The Grey Girl.
Hi grey Girl, Going grey is something few embrace and many fear. But it is a part of life and sooner or later we all have to face it. Going grey does not determine ones age as many people both male and female have grey hair before the age of 21. Its all a matter of genetics. As you age, your hair’s melanocytes — cells that produce pigment — lose steam and make less melanin. That’s when your hair seems to “turn gray,” but it’s actually just losing its original color, not acquiring a new one. The trick is to wear it well. Consult with you stlyist as to how best you can stlye your hair to accentuate your new “salt and pepper”. Who knows, you may even start a trend :) Coloring Grey Hair - Sage covers the grey when used consistently over a period of time. Simmer 1/2 cup dried sage in 2 cups of water for 30 minutes. Steep for 2-3 hours. Strain, use as rinse on clean hair. Leave on until hair has dried, then rinse out.

The texture of children’s hair vary from child to child and, thus, the maintenance routine will vary. Due tothe structure of Afro Caribbean hair, it has a tendency to become dry, which decreases elasticity and can make the hair brittle, dull and prone to breakage. Afro Caribbean. Less is more when comes to the use of products so harsh chemicals should be avoided. Hair softening products like Kinky Curly can be used and simple hairstyles like cork screws and conrows (loose ones) can save time, money and pain from daily styling.
How can I style my baby’s hair? Leaving a newborn’s hair loose and natural allows the hair follicles to grow stronger. But as your baby gets older, you can try different styles, like ponytails, plaits, twits, curls and conrows, depending on the length of his/her hair. To avoid breakage, start by using a wide-tooth comb or soft bristle brush to detangle the ends out. Then you can comb or brush from the roots down to the ends. After parting the hair, tie off the section you’re not working on so you can concentrate on one area at a time. You can use a small amount of oil or cream moisturizer to detangle the hair if necessary. When styling your baby’s hair , use smooth bands or covered elastic bands. Rubber bands cause too much friction on the hair and can lead to breakage. It’s best to avoid styles that pull the hair too tightly. Pulling on the hair can cause it to fall out, a condition known as traction alopecia. If the pulling goes on long enough, it can lead to scalp damage and even permanent hair loss.

You’ll know if your baby is developing traction alopecia because her hair will start to fall out and small bumps will show up around her hairline or elsewhere on her scalp. A change in hairstyle will usually reverse the condition and the hair will grow back. (Don’t confuse traction alopecia with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes patches of hair to fall out. It seems to be an inherited syndrome and has nothing to do with pulling the hair tightly.)

What to do when you’re having a bad hair day
Don’t you just hate it when you start your day with your hair looking like a total mess, even though you styled it the way you always do? It happens to the best of us, and not everyone is prepared to deal with it. A bad hair day is sure to completely ruin any woman’s day, especially if there’s a big meeting, a sought-after job interview, or a really hot date scheduled to take place. As a result, lots of women having a bad hair day tend to be cranky, irritable, and constantly self-conscious about the way their hair looks. If your hair has turned frizzy, unmanageable, become full of flyaways, or has just become generally ungorgeous, you shouldn’t despair, and you definitely shouldn’t let it spoil your plans. Here’s what you can do if your hair has gone wild for the day. If your hair has drooped and turned limp, make a beeline for the ladies’ room and give your hair a light splash of water. Run it through with your fingers and give it a blast of heat with the hand dryer. For freaky flyaways, you can pin back the stray

locks with bobby pins for a while and see if they’ll bounce back the way they should look. Otherwise, apply a smoothing cream or a sculpting gel to straighten them up. If your hair has a tendency to get frizzy, always have on hand a leave-on conditioner you can apply throughout the day to tame your hair. The same goes for hair that suddenly fluffed up. Bangs flipping out? A headband pushed just above your crown will keep them in line. But if you feel like your hair has just generally become ugly all of a sudden, don’t sweat it too much. You can just push it off of your face with a bandana or a thick headband. If all else fails, pull your hair into a ponytail. It will help you get your mind off your hair for the day, so you can just deal with it when you get home. Most of the time though, it’s all in the mind. Even if you think your hair is in a really ugly state, chances are, no one really notices it. Are you aware if someone’s having a bad hair day without them telling you? If not, just keep your cool. Wear your hair with pride and if someone comments on how your hair looks different that way, just smile and say you tried a little something new with it! Having a simple yet stylish wig on hand is also very useful. Have a nice hair day :)

If you’ve ever worn nail extensions, you’ll be aware that after a while they begin to look a bit tired and out of shape. Well, here I’m going to show you how to transform them in between having them re-balanced (filled in), by doing it yourself. It’s very easy to transform your nails yourself and wearing nail extensions shouldn’t put you off.
1.Start by removing any old nail polish and cutting each nail to the desired length. 2. Next, re-shape each nail tip and buff up each nail to give a nice smooth finish. 3.Use a cuticle oil conditioner on each nail to keep the cuticles healthy and looking neat. 4.Once the nails are completely dry, apply a base coat of nail varnish to each nail. 5.Next add the lighter of the two colours first, then tip each nail with the darker colour.
Did you know that TINA was the first person to do aryclic nail extentions in St.Lucia?

ALL ABOUT MEN !!!
The Barber Shop
E
ver stared into the mirror at the barbershop after a shave or cut and wondered “what the ….just happened to me!” Well this is often the case when using a different barber from your regular one. Men today because of their busy schedules and other commitments often resort to visiting the nearest barber or the one with the least clients. The result-A face buried with razor bumps and a not so flattering cut. You end up with a different stylist and is forced to explain over and over again how you would like it done. “A little off the sides” means one thing to one stylist and another thing to another stylist. What many barbers attempt to do is correct the “mistakes” of the previous barber which leaves you walking out with a different image all the time. Every man needs a reliable, skilled barber in his life. Having a regular barber will ensure that you get a consistent, sharp haircut with every visit. You can go in for a trim before a big interview without gambling on whether or not you’ll come out looking like you were attacked by a weed whacker. Good barbers have a memory like an elephant. As you visit a first rate barber regularly, he’ll become familiar with the many contours of your head and the complexities of your hair and will know how to cut and style your hair just the way you like it.
Why Men Don’t visit the Doctor... Interestingly, experts have explored this phenomenon common among men, and have found the following as the main reasons why the male portion of the population are less inclined to get a checkup: 1. Men prefer to be ignorant instead of knowing what’s wrong and be worried to death about it. Yes, men may feel afraid, but they do not want other people to know what they’re feeling. As such they keep silent about it and pretend everything’s OK just so you don’t pester him to go to the doctor. 2. Secondly, they do not like having strangers touch them, especially on their private parts. This is why many men who are struggling with prostate cancer would rather suffer it quietly. Rectal exams are also awkward for them. 3. Men typically also do not like to feel any sort of weakness in any area, which is exactly what they feel when they realize the doctor is checking here and there for what’s wrong with them. Sickness is perceived to be a weakness, and their macho ego just would not allow them to admit it. This is why many men have gone through life without having seen a doctor, and then wind up dying from some serious illness which none of their family members were even aware of. 4. In addition to not wanting to feel any weakness, they also have concerns about how they can provide for their families if they should fall sick. Although today’s modern day welcomes dual-income households and the man no longer bears the full burden of household expenses, he still wants to feel in control. As such, getting sick seems to be an impossible option. 4 REASONS TO GET REGULAR CHECKS
