Level three is the most serious offence under the ICC code of conduct – Australia’s captain, Michael Clarke, was charged with a level one breach when he was heard warning Anderson of “a broken fuckin’ arm” during the winter’s Ashes series. Any player found guilty of a level three breach receives between four and eight suspension points, with two suspension points leading to a one-Test ban. t’s being feted as one of the most exciting World Cup tournaments in recent times – shock results, rugby scorelines, and glorious headed goals that seemed to defy gravity (we’re looking at you Robin van Persie). But in the age of social media, Brazil’s World Cup will be remembered as much for goings on off-the-pitch as what happens on; and this tournament, pundits and commentators have come under particular scrutiny. First came the mauling of Phil Neville, whose “monotone” commentary led to a Twitter furore and the BBC receiving 445 complaints. The Beeb’s Jonathan Pearce didn’t fare much better, chasing his tail over goal-line technology during France’s game against Honduras. Thierry Henry was widely praised for both his navy
cardigan and his ribbing of Robbie Savage live on air. Rio Ferdinand’s choice of orange tie was questioned, as was the ITV pundits’ habit of chilling on the beach in shorts. And of course, the World Cup final marked the end of Alan Hansen’s long career as a pundit. But, as Hansen packs his flip-flops and squashes over twenty years of authoritative head-shaking into his suitcase, might we suggest the perfect replacement? Rihanna. As in, the pop star Rihanna. As in Good Girl Gone Bad, under your umbrellaella-ella, Rihanna. It’s not unusual for pop stars to show an interest in the beautiful game. I’ve written before about how St. Vincent’s Annie Clark is a skilled player, as is Kasabian’s Serge Pizzorno. Lana Del Rey is a big Liverpool fan, and we all know about Michael Jackson’s connection to
Fulham. But RiRi has proved herself this tournament to be the most dedicated and authentic of football fans. here are many impressive things about Adam Scott, the world No1 aiming to become the first Australian champion at the Open since Greg Norman, but arguably his greatest asset is a temperament and calmness that could deflect the fiercest of prevailing winds off the R i ver Dee. Scott is one of few players in the field this year who can say with sincerity that he treats the impostors triumph and disaster just the same, returning to Britain’s links with the same mental fortitude that has not faltered after coming so close to victory in successive years on these shores. “I think Lytham proved to me that I’ve got what it takes to win,” says Scott – with no hint of irony – when discussing his harrowing disappointment in 2012, a miserable Lancashire afternoon for the man from Adelaide who squandered a four-shot lead with four holes of the 72 remaining to hand the Claret Jug to Ernie Els for a second time. “It was obviously not the finish there,” he says, “but that gave me a lot of confidence not just about playing well in majors but also that I had the game to win an Open Championship, which is big for the confidence.” Royal Lytham & St Annes was a seminal moment in Scott’s career but one that strengthened rather than diminished his resistance, where his armoury was reinforced not dented. He was a Masters champion within nine months
and held a one-stroke lead entering the back nine at Muirfield last year before Phil Mickelson’s late magic. Scott finished tied for third. H e comes into this tournament flying under many people’s radar, as attention focuses on the return from injury of Tiger Woods, the mind-set of Rory McIlroy and the form of Justin Rose. However, Scott, who won at Colonial in May after a play-off tussle with Jason Dufner, has, in his own words, never been in better shape. “I think I’m playing some of the best golf of my life at the moment,” he says. “I should really be taking advantage of it and stepping up this week and putting myself in with a good chance. [Lytham] proved to me that I can play at the required level in majors. I tried to keep doing all the right things and make amends for any errors that I made at Lytham. Next time I had a chance at Augusta I was able to get over the line. I’d like to just keep giving myself those chances.” Asked if twice coming close at the Open has increased his hunger for the title, he said: “Yeah, I think it does, for sure. I’m playing some of my best golf at the moment and I don’t know how long that’s going to last. So I’ve got to try and take advantage of that and win all the events that I’d really love to win, and this is certainly one of them. I’ve given myself a couple of opportunities and
all the golfers. “Phil Mickelson, I really liked what he said, that he

It’s got a huge amount of meaning to me. I think it does to
