O

ne of the most important things we do in Italy is restructure our homes.

Whether we merely re-do the kitchen, or reinvent a ruin, it becomes the focus of our lives for years. This month we feature the home of Chris and John Church, a British couple that have been living in the Comune of Anghiari for ten years and have raised their two children here. Their bilingual boys, educated in the Italian public school system, have become impressive young adults, now on the verge of emptying the nest.

Chris and John are living the dream. The one in which you escape the rat race of urban life, and bring your family to the gentle hills of central Italy for a safer, more innocent existence. They are a wonderful example of how foreigners are happy living in our area. So when Chris told me she was putting her house up for sale on the market, I was shocked!

by Breon O’Farrell Chris: «No Breon, you misunderstood. I want to sell this great big house so I can build another one, an ecofriendly, prefabricated Huf Haus. I want to build it in that field out there. We are never leaving Italy. We love it here!»

The Mag: Which company have you listed the house with? Did you use them ten years ago when you bought this place?

Chris and John: «We bought the house from Apta Domus in Sansepolcro. As yet we have not decided who to market the house with, we are waiting for the right moment to launch this property.»

The Mag: I am impressed with how you are so passionate about living in Italy even after all these years. Do you still keep a home in England?

Chris and John: «Yes, we have a small house in London, mainly for Chris when she returns to work.

We sold our main house in London and also a tiny thatched cottage that we had in Somerset. In fact we furnished one of our bedrooms here with items from that cottage...»

The Mag: I love that room! The one with the Victorian bed with ceramic knobs on the posts. And all the 19th century marriage photographs from your family’s history. That room is special.

Chris: «It is a little piece of our past that reminds us of the place where we used to go when our children were tiny: in fact we were married in the village where that cottage is. So we no longer own that house, but the feeling of “home” that we had there is still with us in that bedroom.»

The Mag: I know that you are both great art lovers. Can you tell us a little about your favorite pieces?

Chris: «We have some special wood carvings from the Polish wood artist, Tad Mandziej. His work is so intricately carved that we discover new figures every time we handle them. Look at the detail….

We have many lovely paintings from both local artists and friends, and quite a few by more well known artists, like John Bond from Norwich, Jane Corsellis (R.A) and Bob Brown.»

John:«I am very interested in photography and we own a number of oversized photographic books.

My favorite work of art is a framed photograph by Salgado Bastiano which is hanging in my office. The image energizes me every time I look at it! That is the real power of art isn’t it? To be moved and inspired.»

The Mag: Tell us about the interesting charity work your family does.

Chris and John: «We met an amazing woman named Norma Hornby who has completely dedicated a great part of her life to helping vulnerable young people in England. She heads up an organisation called the Canal Boat Adventure Project in Runcorn. We have particular ties with one of many groups of disadvantaged youngsters: young carers, who very often shoulder the responsibility of caring for a family member.

These young people are very deserving and so we thought it would be nice to give them a holiday in Tuscany, here in the guest house at our home. We have done it every year for the past eight years now, and it has been so rewarding for us, and so important for all the youngsters, including our own children who have had the privilege to get to know children that don’t have the advantages we all enjoy.

Our family has always dreamed that other residents in the area might be willing to get involved and donate a place to shelter the young people for a week.

We know that other people in this area would benefit from the experience because it has been so amazing for us!»

istrutturare la propria casa è una delle prove più significative che ci troviamo ad affrontare in Italia. Sia se vogliamo rinnovare la cucina, sia se ricostruiamo un rudere, la nostra vita è incentrata per anni sui lavori.

La casa di questo mese è quella di Chris e John Church, una coppia di inglesi che vivono nel Comune di Anghiari da dieci anni con i loro due figli. I ragazzi sono bilingue, hanno studiato nella scuola pubblica italiana e sono dei giovani adulti pronti a volare dal nido.

Chris e John sono il perfetto esempio della realizzazione di un sogno. Quello di scappare dalla frenesia della vita metropolitana e crescere i propri figli nelle dolci colline toscane, dove regnano ancora innocenza e sicurezza. Proprio per questo, quando Chris mi ha detto che stavano progettando di mettere la loro casa in vendita sono rimasto di stucco! di Breon O’Farrell Chris: «No Breon, non mi fraintendere. Voglio vendere questa enorme casa solo per costruirne un’altra, un prefabbricato Huf Haus, progettato con principi eco-sostenibili. E il luogo è proprio quel terreno laggiù. Non abbandoneremmo mai l’Italia. Ci troviamo benissimo qui!»

The Mag: A quale agenzia vi siete rivolti per la vendita? La stessa che avete usato quando avete comprato?

Chris and John: «Allora l’agenzia alla quale ci siamo rivolti era Apta Domus di Sansepolcro. Al momento però non abbiamo ancora deciso a chi affidare la vendita né tantomeno quando potrebbe essere il momento buono per farlo.»

The Mag: Ammiro davvero il vostro entusiasmo per la vita qui in Italia, dopo così tanti anni. Avete mantenuto una casa in Inghilterra?

Chris and John: «Sì, abbiamo un piccolo appartamento a Londra che serve a Chris per il suo lavoro.

Abbiamo venduto la casa dove vivevamo a Londra, così come una casetta dal tetto di paglia che avevamo a Somerset. Di quella casetta abbiamo mantenuto i mobili di una camera da letto che è ora qui...»

Secolo a testimonianza della storia della famiglia. È davvero una stanza speciale.

Chris: «È un piccolo pezzo di passato che ci riporta al luogo dove andavamo spesso quando i bambini erano piccoli: ci siamo sposati proprio nel piccolo paese dove avevamo quella casetta. Così, anche se non la possediamo più, possiamo ritrovare il senso di “casa” entrando in quella camera da letto.»

The Mag: So che amate molto l’arte e vorrei chiedervi qualcosa sulle opere che decorano la vostra casa. Quali sono le preferite?

Chris: «Ci sono alcuni oggetti di legno intagliato dell’artista polacco Tad Mandziej. Gli intagli sono così intricati che si possono scoprire nuove figure ogni volta che si prende in mano un oggetto. Hai notato i dettagli... abbiamo anche bei dipinti di alcuni artisti e amici locali e alcuni quadri dalle firme più conosciute, come John Bond di Norwich, Jane Corsellis (R.A) e Bob Brown.»

John:«Io sono stato sempre appassionato di fotografia e ho diversi libri fotografici molto grandi.

La mia opera d’arte preferita è una foto di Salgado Bastiano, incorniciata nel mio ufficio. È un’immagine che mi ricarica ogni volta che la osservo! Non è poi il potere di un’opera d’arte ispirare e commuovere?»

The Mag: Potete raccontarmi dell’interessante esperienza di beneficenza alla quale vi prestate come famiglia?

Chris and John: «In passato abbiamo conosciuto una donna eccezionale, Norma Hornby che ha dedicato gran parte della sua vita ad aiutare giovani inglesi in difficoltà. Dirige un’organizzazione a Runcorn, chiamata “Canal Boat Adventure Project”. Tra i vari gruppi formati da giovani svantaggiati, uno in particolare riunisce ragazzi o ragazze che hanno sulle loro spalle la responsabilità di prendersi cura di un membro della loro famiglia. Abbiamo un legame particolare con questi giovani. Sono persone che meritano tanto per quello che fanno e così abbiamo pensato di offrire loro una vacanza qui in Toscana, nella nostra casa degli ospiti. Ormai sono otto anni che ogni estate ospitiamo questi ragazzi e l’esperienza ci ha arricchito davvero tanto, sia perché è stata significativa per loro, sia perché i nostri figli hanno avuto il privilegio di confrontarsi con coetanei privi di quei vantaggi che spesso si danno per scontati.

Abbiamo sempre sperato che altre famiglie di questa zona volessero condividere il nostro modo di aiutare giovani in difficoltà, ospitandoli per una settimana. E siamo certi che chiunque lo facesse ne trarrebbe enorme beneficio, a giudicare da quanto sia stata per noi un’esperienza incredibile!»

s there anything more romantic than when a guy tattoos the name of his lover on his arm? I guess it depends who you ask. Flowers, chocolates and jewelry are romantic gifts, but we men are almost obliged to give these gifts to our girlfriends and wives.

We only need money, and ten minutes to shop. On the contrary, to willingly tolerate the discomfort of getting a tattoo, and to live with the permanence of it, is a decision which wreaks of commitment and sacrifice to your lover. I suspect the gift of getting a tattoo can be both sexy and romantic.

I contacted Photographer Anna Cuzzolin, and one of the most important tattoo artist in our area, Guido Cinquilli, to help me explore this idea of “Tattoo as a Gift”.

Small tattoos on a woman’s body arouse my curiosity, make me consider her in a particular way. Not that she is cheap or low brow, as was the impression that tattoos gave to the general public when I was a kid.

Only sailors, convicts, and gang members bore tattoos back then. Small “tats” strike me as private and sexy.

Large ones as statements of some significant self identification. In every instance a tattoo is uncomfortable to get, and it is a long lasting record and declaration of a commitment to something, even if that “something” is a person’s superficial need to get a tattoo merely because all his friends have one.

I got a tattoo in February of 1985 after a week of nonstop debauchery during Mardi Gras in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. In Italy we celebrate Carnevale as a sort of children’s costume party.

In New Orleans it is a month long event of shared insanity sponsored by dozens of Mardi Gras clubs.

Everyone submits to the irresistible allure of “Fat Tuesday”. I decided to get a tattoo to remind me of some hard learned lessons after my first and only Mardi Gras. I got a small Chinese symbol that I thought

meant “to be gentle” but instead turned out to mean “Nature”. The lesson? Be careful what you write on your body.

Even though tattoos have become almost commonplace on the bodies of adults less than thirty five years of age, they still communicate a strong sense of rebellion. Nothing says” I’m a rebel” more than a tattoo except for perhaps, a piercing, but even that can be removed as the occasion dictates. Radically colored died hair can be cut off or even re-died, and funky clothes can be changed out of. Irrespective of its transformation into the mainstream of modern culture “The tattoo” is still king of the rebels.

But can it be a gift too?

Although I am in my fifties and feel no particular need to rebel anymore, I am considering to surprise my wife with a tattoo bearing her name as a St Valentine’s day gift to her. In the impressive cleanliness of his tattoo parlor in Trestina, Guido Cinquilli and his sister Gloria explain the point of view of their cliental: “They inscribe themselves with the names of their dear ones.

Lovers do it often, and even close friends. It is quite common that new parents write their baby’s name on their bodies”. This reassures me because I am having visions of “Angelina” and “Winona Forever”, which remind me of the failed relationships certain Holly-

wood stars memorialized on their bodies.

OK. A tattoo can’t turn an infatuation into true love.

But it might be helpful in refreshing a relationship during a stale period, or one of the lulls life invariably presents us. It is far more economical than a recommitment ceremony.

Most guys like giving gifts with dual value. A new washing machine that makes her life easier and his clothes clean. A new set of cutlery, or expensive pots and pans which fill his tummy with food. It is our way to be efficient, but it is not at all romantic, and instead, very likely to result in a fight. So no efficiency allowed guys. The purpose of a Valentine’s Day gift is to show appreciation in a romantic way. A tattoo doesn’t necessarily fall in to this category unless you find that the rebelliousness of it is sexy, that the long term commitment of it is romantic, and that the discomfort of applying it demonstrates passion.

Marriage (commitment) should not be a ball and chain. Men and women need to be fulfilled as individuals, and as a couple. Romantic gifts help to do this.

Yet long after the roses have wilted and the chocolate has been eaten, my wife will be able to run her finger over my tattoo, and trace the letters of her name. This tattoo, if I get it, may help us keep the love, and the fun, in our marriage. That is a wonderful Valentine’s Day gift for her (and I benefit from it too!).

’è qualcosa di più romantico di un ragazzo che si fa tatuare il nome della propria amata sul braccio? Forse non tutti la pensano come me. D’altra parte, fiori e gioielli sono regali romantici, ma noi uomini siamo quasi obbligati a regalarli alle nostre fidanzate e mogli. Basta avere soldi e un po’ di tempo per andare a comprarli.

Quello che un tatuaggio richiede è invece una certa dose di coraggio nel sopportare il fastidio/dolore durante la realizzazione e l’impegno a vivere con un segno permanente sulla propria pelle. È una decisione che implica sacrificio e dedizione nei confronti dell’amore. E per me è un atto sia sexy che romantico. di Breon O’Farrell Per avere una conferma alle mie riflessioni, ho contattato la fotografa Anna Cuzzolin e uno degli esecutori di tatuaggi più conosciuti nella nostra zona, l’artista Guido Cinquilli. Volevo un suo parere su quanto fosse diffusa l’idea di “un tatuaggio come regalo”. Se vedo un piccolo tatuaggio sul corpo di una donna, mi incuriosisco e in genere sono spinto ad avere dei pregiudizi. Non negativi, nel senso di considerare “leggera” o “superficiale” la persona (questo era il modo di pensare quando ero un ragazzino a New York). Oggi considero piccoli tatuaggi come qualcosa di intimo e sexy, mentre vedo quelli più grandi e assertivi come un messaggio di autoidentificazione. In ogni caso, so per certo che farsi fare un tatuaggio non è indolore e la sua permanenza è segno di una memoria indelebile o una dedizione perenne a qualcosa, anche se quel qualcosa è un bisogno superficiale di farsi tatuare solo perché tutti gli amici lo fanno.

A Febbraio del 1985 mi sono fatto tatuare nel quartiere francese di New Orleans, Luisiana, dopo una settimana trascorsa a festeggiare “Mardi Gras”. In Italia ho imparato che Carnevale è soprattutto un periodo di feste in maschera per bambini. A New Orleans invece, è un intero mese di follia condivisa, un susseguirsi di feste organizzate da club nati allo scopo, fino all’ultimo giorno, “Mardi Gras”, che rapisce chiunque con irresistibili attrattive.

Il tatuaggio doveva rappresentare il ricordo di una lezione dolorosa e importante imparata durante quel mio primo e ultimo Mardi Gras. Ho scelto un simbolo cinese, pensando volesse dire “essere gentile”, e ho poi scoperto voler dire “natura”. La lezione appresa?

Attenzione a quello che vi fate scrivere sul corpo.

Ormai vedere un tatuaggio sul corpo di una persona 18

più giovane della quarantina è abbastanza comune, ma l’impressione rimane lo stesso quella di una ribellione. Non c’è nulla che comunichi il messaggio: “Sono un ribelle” più di un tatuaggio. Forse il piercing ha lo stesso effetto, ma di fatto può essere rimosso se l’occasione richiede un certo decoro. Così come una colorazione artificiale dei capelli può essere cambiata, al limite tagliando la chioma, e ci si può svestire di abiti “funky”. “Il Tatuaggio” è sempre il re della ribellione, nonostante sia ormai così diffuso tra i più e meno giovani. Ma la domanda iniziale era se può essere un regalo.

Sto pensando, nonostante i miei cinquant’anni, di sorprendere mia moglie presentandomi il giorno di San Valentino con il suo nome tatuato sul mio corpo. Con questo proposito, mi sono fatto raccontare da Guido e sua sorella Gloria, nel loro immacolato salotto del tatuaggio a Trestina, quali sono le motivazioni della loro clientela. “Molti si fanno tatuare il nome dei propri cari. Spesso sono amanti, ma anche migliori amici. È anche comune che un genitore si faccia tatuare il nome del figlio appena nato”. Questo fatto mi rassicura di fronte a visioni di tatuaggi come “Angelina” o “Winona Forever”, memorie di amori falliti che alcune star di Hollywood portano sui loro corpi.

Certo è che un tatuaggio non può trasformare un’infatuazione in vero amore. Ma forse può aiutare ad aggiungere un certo brio a una relazione che, come capita nella vita, è in un periodo di stasi o di pausa.

Con il vantaggio che il regalo è più economico rispetto a organizzare una cerimonia per rinnovare le proprie promesse.

Ci sono uomini che fanno regali dal valore ambiguo.

Una lavatrice nuova che sollevi la propria moglie dalle fatiche di lavare i panni di suo marito. Un nuovo set di posate o pentole per farle cucinare piatti appettitosi per lui. E’ un modo maschile di essere efficienti, ma lungi dall’essere romantico, può dare l’incipit a una litigata. Quindi per favore lasciate perdere l’efficienza. E considerate un regalo di San Valentino come un segno romantico di apprezzamento. Non dico che un tatuaggio sia per forza da classificare in questa categoria, ma può esserlo se per voi ribelle equivale a sexy, se un giuramento a lungo termine è romantico per definizione e se dover sopportare il fastidio o dolore nel ricevere il tatuaggio sia indice di passione.

Il Matrimonio (o l’impegno di una relazione di coppia) non dovrebbe essere una catena o una palla al piede. Gli individui devono trovare una propria realizzazione nella coppia. E un dono romantico è sempre un aiuto. Alla fine però le rose appassiscono e i cioccolatini vengono mangiati, mentre mia moglie potrà sempre accarezzare le lettere del suo nome tatuate per lei sulla mia pelle. Se mai dovessi decidermi, questo tatuaggio potrebbe aiutare a mantenere l’amore e la gioia del nostro matrimonio. Sarebbe un meraviglioso regalo di San Valentino per lei (e io ne trarrei beneficio!)

The Mag: Tell us about these last frenetic months Michele: «We shot the series over the summer in June and July. Nobody knew what to expect, and when the show aired in December the viewing public really responded positively. MasterChef became a national hit after the second episode and has gotten an enormous amount of publicity support from the Sky network. I didn’t expect such a response. So far I have stayed grounded. I am lucky that in Città di Castello it doesn’t matter so much if you are on TV. But everywhere else I go people recognize me. I have to say I like it, otherwise I wouldn’t have participated.»

The Mag: What was it like on MasterChef Italia?

Michele: «I got to meet people whom I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. For two months, I lived in Milan with these complete strangers, sharing everything, and we became very close, very quickly. It would take

real prize to win.»

The Mag: Where did you get your passion for cooking?

Michele: «From my family, my mother. We all love food and the experience of a good meal, but as a kid I found pleasure in watching my mom cook for us.

When I was about 16 years old I started preparing a few things myself. During my University years I lived alone and started having fun experimenting. Fun is what cooking is all about for me, it is never a burden.

It is about gathering with friends and it is a way to say something about yourself.»

The Mag: At any point in the show did you start wanting to show off?

Michele: «I was always pleased with my performance at every step, every challenge. Many people have asked me: - How could you do so much in just one hour? - The answer is that during that experience your mind is set on cooking, it is like a job and you are surrounded by people from whom you can learn. The real challenge was not only to cook, but to be competitive, especially during the pre-selection, in which you have to really expose yourself in order to be chosen for the show.»

The Mag: But you really think “the television industry” would suit you?

Michele: «Well, I am intrigued by the question! It may be that I won’t like “show business”. Honestly I don’t know it well enough to judge. I like my world and what I do. I can be very solitary sometimes, and I need to find refuge in nature as I am able to in our

green valley.»

The Mag: You moved from the city to live in the The Mag: You moved from the city to live in the countryside. Why? Michele: «My work as a vet is so gratifying because it allows me to be outdoors and in nature. I specialize in horses and travel from client to client in my mobile medical office. Although my family is from the center of town, I have been very fortunate to build my personal and professional life more in the countryside.»

And like a dream come true this local boy has gotten his big break in the form of an appearance on MasterChef Italia, the Sky Television talent show that has taken the country by storm. His profession is pets, but his passion is in the kitchen.

The Mag: How important is family in your life?

Michele: «Family is essential! also friends and work are fundamental to my happiness. But especially my family which gave me a solid foundation. I am very close to my parents and my sister. I am independent of course, and can be away from them for long periods of time, but it is they who fulfill my life, they inspired me without imposing anything on me. I have always been my own person and this is one of the gifts they allowed me.»

The Mag: Can you tell us a bit more about your background? After all you are a veterinarian, expert with horses, so passionate about cooking that you are a contestant on MasterChef!

Michele: «When I was at University in Perugia I had the dream of opening a small restaurant, for about thirty people. I would say to myself, “Maybe in a couple of years, I’ll have some money to do something on my own”. This idea has always been in my head, sometimes like a dream, other times like a realistic goal. There must be a reason why I have always liked making people happy with my food, I could be in this business.»

The Mag: Tell us something about your time at veterinary school.

Michele: «That was a wonderful time. I lived in Perugia for several years, even after graduating, and I am really bonded to that city as well to the Veterinarian University Department. I spent three intense years studying horse surgery. I fell in love with the profession and I often go back to the University for work.

Apart from that, I met many other students who now are my colleges and friends.»

The Mag: So, now that we know you better, I have one last question: Should we call you Doctor or Chef Bendini?

Michele: «Let’s stick with Michele. But if I have to choose, I think I prefer Dottor Bendini.»

arismatico, estroso, sguardo cristallino, sorriso acceso. Senza ombra di dubbio, è uno dei personaggi del momento.

Lui è Michele Bendini. Tifernate doc, protagonista di ‘MasterChef Italia’, uno dei talent show di maggior successo di Sky. Approdato in tv quasi per gioco, ha conquistato pubblico e critica grazie alle sue capacità e al suo fascino.

Ma Michele è questo e molto altro ancora.

Così, The Mag ha deciso di incontrare questo veterinario con la passione per i fornelli, per raccontarvi la sua storia. di Marco Polchi The Mag: Partiamo da ora, dagli ultimi mesi che saranno stati sicuramente frenetici.

Michele: «Allora, l’esperienza di MasterChef è stata fatta tra giugno e luglio, i mesi in cui è stato registrato il programma. Siamo arrivati a dicembre nel silenzio quasi assoluto, anche perché ne eravamo a conoscenza io e pochi altri, insieme agli amici-concorrenti con i quali ero in contatto e con cui aspettavo questo momento con trepidazione. Poi è uscito in tv – la prima puntata abbastanza in sordina, in cui sono passato velocemente – e poi c’è stata questa esplosione mediatica. Il programma è molto ma molto seguito, ha avuto un grande successo, quest’anno sia la produzione che Sky hanno puntato tantissimo su MasterChef; se devo dirlo, non mi aspettavo così tanto clamore, o meglio, non mi rendevo nemmeno conto di quello che potesse succedere. Per ora mi tengo sulla mia realtà, resto con i piedi ben piantati a terra. Ho la fortuna di vivere a Città di Castello dove essere conosciuto o meno in tv cambia poco; essere in tv ha portato solo un qualcosa in più. Certo, quando esci qui o anche altrove, ti rendi conto che la gente ti guarda, ti ferma, ti riconosce, e alla fine è una cosa piacevole, altrimenti non avrei nemmeno partecipato.»

The Mag: Che tipo di esperienza è stata quella di MasterChef Italia?

Michele: «Sono dell’idea che ogni esperienza sia importante e, nel bene o nel male, formativa. Quello che mi ha dato MasterChef è stata la possibilità di conoscere persone che porterò nel cuore tutta la vita. Ho vissuto per circa due mesi a Milano a stretto contatto con degli sconosciuti che sono diventati dei confidenti importanti; trascorrere tantissime ore con delle persone, pur in poco tempo, ti permette ti creare dei legami che in altre situazioni si formerebbero in un anno o due. Si crea un rapporto umano bellissimo e questa 24

è una cosa che ci terrei a sottolineare. Ho imparato tanto anche in cucina, penso di essere cresciuto da questo punto di vista. Poi sono entrato in contatto con un mondo, quello della tv e dello spettacolo, del quale ero totalmente all’oscuro. È un ambiente particolare, sicuramente diverso da quello che abbiamo intorno tutti i giorni ed è stato bello anche conoscere questo mondo. Posso dire che mi è piaciuto, nonostante lo stress e la fatica; sei sotto pressione e c’è competizione, com’è giusto che sia quando partecipi a un programma con una vincita finale.»

The Mag: Così ti chiamano ‘Il Cuoco’; da dove viene questa passione per la cucina?

Michele: «Da casa mia, penso sempre che il mio mentore ai fornelli sia stata mia madre. In casa c’è una gran passione per il cibo e per lo stare a tavola. A me piaceva molto guardare mia madre che cucinava. Poi ci ho messo le mani anch’io e ho cominciato a preparare le prime cose verso 16-17 anni. In seguito sono andato all’università, a vivere da solo, dove ho preso a sperimentare e divertirmi. Ecco, per me cucinare è stato sempre sinonimo di divertimento, non è mai stato un peso; sempre un’occasione di incontro con gli amici, e forse anche un modo per dire qualcosa, mostrare un aspetto di te.»

The Mag: Piombato in un ‘talent’ così quasi inconsapevolmente, con il passare dei giorni e delle puntate sentivi di voler dimostrare qualcosa?

Michele: «Dico la verità, dopo ogni prova mi stupivo di me stesso in maniera positiva.

In molti mi chiedono: “Ma come facevi a fare tutto in un’ora?”. La risposta è che in quel momento hai una forma mentis predisposta alla cucina, diventa come un lavoro, e inoltre sei con colleghi con cui puoi approfondire e apprendere. La sfida è stata sia nel propormi che competitiva, perché devi affrontare una dura preselezione in cui è importante parlare di te ed esporti; inoltre il ‘live cooking’, ovvero cucinare dal vivo, è il primo vero ostacolo da superare. È stato curioso e bello farlo ed è quello che ti coinvolge.»

The Mag: Ma “la televisione” credi possa fare al caso tuo?

Michele: «Eh! Questa è una domanda intrigante. Per come sono fatto io forse la galassia che orbita intorno allo spettacolo potrebbe non piacermi, la dovrei conoscere meglio. Amo tanto il mio mondo e amo quello che faccio. Sono anche una persona solitaria a volte, che ha bisogno di rifugiarsi nel verde che questa valle ci offre.»

The Mag: Ti sei trasferito in piena campagna, perché?

Michele: «Per me vivere e lavorare a stretto contatto con la natura è uno degli aspetti che mi piace più del mio lavoro e che ho sempre un po’ ricercato. Mi considero molto fortunato sotto questo punto di vista perché è quello che volevo. Vivo in campagna, nei

The Mag: È importante la famiglia nella tua vita?

Michele: «Fondamentale! Famiglia, amici e lavoro credo che siano cose imprescindibili, soprattutto la prima – ripeto – che mi ha dato delle basi solide. Ho un forte legame con i miei genitori e con mia sorella; riesco a essere indipendente, a starne lontano anche per molto tempo, ma sono loro che mi riempiono la vita e sono loro che mi hanno tramesso le proprie passioni senza mai obbligarmi o impormi qualcosa. Ho fatto sempre le mie scelte da solo e di questo do loro grandissimo merito.»

The Mag: Spiegaci un po’ da dove sei partito. Un veterinario, specializzato nella cura dei cavalli, che si appassiona di cucina così tanto da impiattare di fronte a Cracco, Bastianich e Barbieri...

Michele: «Anche all’università, a Perugia, l’idea e il sogno di aprire un piccolo ristorante da 30 posti li ho sempre avuti. Dicevo fra me e me: “Magari fra qualche anno, con qualche soldo in tasca, riesco ad aprire qualcosa di mio”. È una cosa che avevo in testa da tanto, forse come un sogno, forse un traguardo

raggiungibile. Penso che se mi piace, e sempre mi è piaciuto, far mangiare le persone in allegria un motivo ci sia e allora, perché no, potrebbe attirarmi la ristorazione.»

The Mag: E degli anni universitari cosa mi dici?

Michele: «Beh, gli anni dell’Università sono stati bellissimi, un periodo della vita stupendo. Sono stato a Perugia per tanto tempo, sono rimasto anche dopo laureato e sono legato a questa città fortemente così come alla Facoltà di Veterinaria, dove ho intrapreso anche un percorso di tre anni molto intenso nella sezione di chirurgia equina durante il quale mi sono letteralmente innamorato di questa professione e dove torno spesso per motivi lavorativi. Poi ci sono i miei colleghi di studio, che sono diventati colleghi di lavoro con i quali continuo a collaborare oltre che sentire come amici.»

The Mag: Bene, il quadro è completo, non resta che l’ultima domanda: dovremo chiamarti Dottore o Chef Bendini?

Michele: «Di base Michele. Poi, dovessi scegliere, preferirei sempre Dottor Bendini.»

Freedom of speech is directly related to freedom of opinion. In every modern democracy it is an absolute right, intrinsic to human nature. It is the ability of having personal thoughts about a topic and being able to express them. In the Italian Constitution, the 21st Article establishes: “Everybody has the right to express freely his/her own thoughts through speaking, writing and any other means”.

It is easy to understand that freedom of speech is not strictly absolute, in fact the law establishes some limitations in order to avoid the abuse of it. The Italian criminal code enumerate the crime of “insulting” (art. 594) and of “defamation” (art. 595). The first one indicates the act of offending “the honor and the reputation of a person standing before you”, either verbally or on paper. The second one indicates the act of offending someone’s reputation by talking or writing to at least two other people.

The criminal code is dated 1930, while the Constitution became effective the 1st of January 1948. Since then, the public morass has changed a lot. It is natural to ask what is meant by “honor” in the year 2013. The issue is quite complex, and what you really need to know is that a Judge is empowered to determine every single case in order to establish if a statement is offensive to someone’s reputation or not. His evaluation is based on the interpretation of the common sense of the expressed words.

A couple of words about defamation and the Internet. It is an urban legend that the web is a virtual space without regulations. This is totally wrong. Everybody must remember that posting something on Facebook, Twitter etc.. is the same as writing in a more traditional medium, with the same legal consequences.

The rights to 1) criticism, and to 2) satire, are important aspects to freedom of speech. Criticism must be founded on real facts which are interesting to the public. It can be provocative, but not immoral or offensive, if so, it is possible to be accused of crime. Satire is instead a parody of reality which is expressed with surreal paradoxes and metaphors, in order to make people laugh and express opposition to customs. It is punishable if it becomes a useless insult focused primarily on ridiculing a person.

There is an interesting exception to the freedom of speech in Italy. If you are elected to the Parliament you are immune to prosecution, because the 68th article of the Constitution establishes that an elected politician or senator cannot be called to answer about any opinion he/she expressed while fulfilling his/her elected duty. What is curious is that the 68th article has been interpreted as applicable to every moment of the life of the official. For example in the UK the immunity is granted only when a politician is speaking and voting during meetings in the Parliament.

To end with a suggestion: if you are not a comedian or a politician, say what you want to, but choose your words carefully.

La libertà di parola è una delle forme in cui si manifesta la libertà di opinione, cioè la facoltà, considerata nelle moderne democrazie come assoluta e connaturale all’uomo, di avere un proprio pensiero riguardo a qualsiasi cosa e di poterlo manifestare in ogni modo.

L’art. 21 della Costituzione italiana afferma che «Tutti hanno diritto di manifestare liberamente il proprio pensiero con la parola, lo scritto e ogni altro mezzo di diffusione.»

Come è facile intuire, la libertà di parola non è “assoluta” in senso stretto, ma è soggetta ad alcune limitazioni previste dalla legge e dirette ad impedirne l’abuso. Il codice penale prevede i reati di “ingiuria” (art. 594) e “diffamazione” (art. 595). La prima ipotesi ricorre quando si offende “l’onore o il decoro di una persona presente”, sia con la parola che per iscritto. La seconda quando l’offesa alla reputazione altrui è arrecata parlando o scrivendo ad almeno altre due persone.

Vi domanderete cosa siano oggi “onore” e “decoro”. Il codice penale risale al 1930, la Costituzione è entrata in vigore il 1 gennaio 1948. Da allora la morale pubblica è cambiata considerevolmente. La questione è complessa, per ora vi basti sapere che è il Giudice a valutare caso per caso se un’affermazione costituisce o meno offesa alla reputazione, interpretando il senso comune che le parole hanno quando vengono pronunciate.

Restando ai giorni nostri, merita un brevissimo cenno anche la diffamazione attraverso internet. Una leggenda metropolitana vuole che il web sia uno spazio virtuale sottratto ad ogni regola. Niente di più sbagliato: ricordatevi che quando postate qualcosa su Facebook, Twitter e simili, è come se parlaste o scriveste in modo tradizionale, con ogni immaginabile conseguenza legale.

Corollari della libertà di parola sono il diritto di critica e la satira. La critica deve essere fondata su fatti veri e che abbiano interesse pubblico, e può essere formulata in termini anche provocatori, ma non immorali od offensivi, altrimenti si rischia di incorrere nelle sanzioni penali. La satira è invece una caricatura della realtà che si esprime con paradossi e metafore surreali, per destare il riso e sferzare il costume. Viene sanzionata quando si risolve in un insulto gratuito e ridicolizzante alla persona in quanto tale.

Infine vi segnalo un’eccezione. Se sarete eletti in Parlamento potrete dire quel che vorrete come vorrete, perché non potrete essere chiamati a rispondere delle opinioni espresse nell’esercizio delle vostre funzioni, per effetto di quanto previsto dall’art. 68 della Costituzione. Curiosamente, la giurisprudenza ha interpretato la disposizione estendendola ad ogni momento della vita del deputato o senatore. Volendo fare un paragone, in Gran Bretagna l’immunità vale solo per i discorsi ed i voti espressi all’interno delle aule del Parlamento.

Consiglio finale: se non siete comici o parlamentari, dite quel che vi pare ma misurate sempre le parole.

February is the month for preparation. Let’s get ready!

Spring is on our doorstep. The days are longer and the bulbs planted in autumn are starting to grow in our gardens (crocuses, snowdrops and so on). If positioned in some covered corners you can still have pansies and primula veris that you planted in full winter.

Take your scissors, rakes and gloves and get ready to clean your garden. Get rid of dead leaves, old ruined mulch, the broken vegetation ruined by the harsh winter, and you can make space for new sprouts. If you skipped fertilizing the earth in autumn, now it is the time to do it with your flowerbeds, bushes and gardens. Make sure the earth is not to wet or icy, turn it over and use organic products.

In February the risk of snow is still high and the white cover can be dangerous especially for very big bushes (like azaleas, rhododendrons, camellias) because its weight can break vital branches. In order to avoid this you can cover a broom with some rags and use it to delicately move the leaves.

This is the time to start pruning the deciduous flower shrubbery that are starting to flower on the new branches (buddleja, syrian hibiscus, lagerstroemia, caryopteris, spirea bumalda). You want to work on a sunny, dry and windless day if possible. You mustn’t prune old wood shrubbery that will flower in the spring in the same way though (forsythia, white spirea, lilac, philadelphus, laurustine, and deciduous magnolia): you’ll eventually put these in order after they flower in full spring.

The first tepid, sunny days of March are going to awaken our spirits, and all of nature will respond likewise. Since the nights are not so cold anymore, and the days have more hours of light, forsythia are in bloom and their yellow color will brighten our gardens. Vegetable gardeners will begin their dedicated tasks which will continue through October!

After the preparatory work of February, you can start planting the seasonal plants that will last until autumn.

March is the month for herbs and our gardens will be full of colors and aromas because of lavender, sage, thyme and rosemary. The seasonal plants will explode upon our lawns like fireworks! begonias, marigolds, geraniums, surfinie, everything will shape up.

When we are out of danger of icy nights you can plant almost all the vegetable garden summer production: from tomatoes to eggplants, from pumpkins to salad, from cucumbers, to peppers and so on. Be careful not to exaggerate with watering. Even though the nights are not so risky anymore, they are still cold, and a plant could die if too wet.

Febbraio... la parola d’ordine è “prepariamoci”! La primavera incalza, le giornate si allungano e nei giardini iniziano a spuntare i primi bulbi piantati in autunno (Crochi, Bucaneve), in angoli ben riparati si possono ancora apprezzare le Viole del pensiero e le primule Veris messe a dimora in pieno inverno. Armatevi di cesoie, rastrelli, guanti e sarete pronti per la pulizia del giardino; via le foglie morte, via la vecchia pacciamatura ormai rovinata, via tutta la vegetazione rovinata dalle intemperie dell’inverno e spazio ai nuovi germogli. Se si è saltata la concimazione autunnale, questo è il momento giusto per farlo con aiuole, bordure e giardini. Accertatevi che il terreno non sia troppo bagnato o gelato e iniziate la preparazione degli orti con relativa vangatura e concimazione organica.

Febbraio è ancora un mese a forte rischio neve: la presenza del manto bianco può provocare, specialmente nei cespugli molto grandi (ad esempio azalee, rododendri, camelie), la rottura di rami vitali per la pianta; per evitare tutto questo basterà munirsi di una scopa avvolta con degli stracci e scuotere delicatamente le foglie.

Cominciate a potare gli arbusti da fiore a foglia caduca che fioriscono sui nuovi rami (Buddleja, Ibisco siriaco, Lagerstroemia, Cariopteris, Spirea bumalda); è preferibile procedere in giornate di sole e asciutte e possibilmente senza vento. Per gli arbusti che fioriranno in primavera sul legno vecchio (Forsizia, Spirea bianca, Lillà, Filadelfo, Lentaggine e Magnolie a foglia caduca) un eventuale riordino andrà effettuato dopo la fioritura, a primavera inoltrata.

I primi tiepidi raggi di sole marzolino risvegliano, insieme al buonumore, anche la natura. Le nottate non più fredde e le prolungate ore di luce permettono alle Forsizie di schiudere le prime gemme e colorare di giallo i nostri giardini; i primi appassionati dell’orto inizieranno il lungo cammino che li terrà impegnati fino ad ottobre inoltrato. Tutto il lavoro di preparazione svolto a febbraio vedrà i suoi frutti con la messa a dimora delle piante stagionali che ci faranno compagnia fino ad autunno.

Marzo è il mese delle aromatiche: i nostri giardini si riempiranno di colori e profumi, dalle Lavande alle Salvie, dal Timo al Rosmarino. Le stagionali coloreranno come l’arcobaleno i nostri prati: Begonie, Tagete, Gerani, Surfinie, tutto comincerà a prendere forma.

Lo scampato pericolo di gelate notturne permetterà d’interrare quasi tutta la produzione estiva dell’orto: pomodori, melanzane, zucche, insalata, cetrioli, peperoni e così via... Attenzione a non abbondare troppo con le innaffiature, le notti sono pur sempre rigide e una pianta troppo bagnata potrebbe comunque morire.

Devilled kidneys Rognoni di agnello “alla diavola”

Devilled kidneys is a Victorian British breakfast dish consisting of lamb's kidneys cooked in a spiced sauce, referred to as "devilling".

It has since become more frequently used as a supper-time dish, and is regularly featured in cookbooks and by celebrity chefs.

My version is with an italian twist, pan fried with rosemary and over a sauteed mushroom and spring onion served with a black truffle paste bruschetta (instead of over a simple toast).

Ingredients: 100 g Lamb kidneys, 20 g veg stock, 70 g mushrooms, 20 g truffle paste, 10 ml Extra virgin olive oil, 35 g butter, 1 stalk of spring onion, 1 garlic clove, 1 slice of toasted bread, parsley, rosemary, pepper, salt, chili.

Procedure: Peel the garlic clove, pour olive oil into a pan, add chopped spring onions, garlic and mushrooms and saute till soft. Side apart.

In another pan, add 20 g of butter and olive oil, rosemary and chili and pan fry the lamb kidney (cut in half and cleaned of the central fat) in both side till nice and brown.

Poor the veg stock and the rest of the butter to make an emulsion.

Toast the bread and spread the truffle paste on top of it.

Place the mushroom on the plate, top with the kidney, the bruschetta and sprinkle with the butter emulsion and parsley.

Questa ricetta è tipica della colazione inglese e risale al periodo Vittoriano. Si tratta di rognoni di agnello cucinati in una salsa piccante che richiama la nostra “alla diavola”.

Questo piatto, presente nei libri di cucina classica inglese, è oggi più adatto servito per cena ed è riproposto in diverse versioni dai cuochi celebri.

La mia è una rivisitazione della ricetta con un tocco Italiano, grazie alla cottura in padella con l’uso di olio extravergine di oliva, rosmarino, aglietto e funghi di bosco.

Inoltre, a sostituzione del pane tostato come base, preparo una bruschetta al patè di tartufo nero di Norcia servita a lato.

Ingredienti: 100 gr. di rognoni di agnello, 20 gr. di brodo vegetale concentrato, 70 gr. di funghi di bosco, 20 gr. patè di tartufo nero, 10 ml olio extra vergine di oliva, 35 gr. di burro, 1 aglietto, 1 spicchio di aglio, una fetta di pane tostato, prezzemolo e rosmarino, sale e pepe, chili.

Procedimento: In una padella versate l’olio d’oliva e 20 gr di burro, aggiungete il rosmarino e il chili e scottate da entrambe le parti i rognoni (che avrete precedentemente tagliato a metà e privato del grassetto centrale) fino a ottenere una colorazione dorata. Lasciate riposare.

In un’altra padella ponete uno spicchio d’aglio con l’olio, l’aglietto taglato fino e i funghi sminuzzati. Saltate sul fuoco fino a caramellizzare e aggiungete brodo per ammorbidire il tutto.

Aggiungete il restante burro ed emulsionate la salsa.

Tostate il pane al forno o con un tosta pane e spalmateci del patè di tartufo. Impiattate cominciando dai funghi sui quali porrete i rognoni, la bruschetta di tartufo. Nappare con la salsa al burro e il prezzemolo triturato.

4 eggs 370 gr. Flour 20 gr. Melted butter 1 Table spoon of sugar 3 Table spoons of Mistrà (liquer) Juice of ½ lemon One pinch of salt One bag (7 gm) of dried yeast for bread or pizza Enough Oil to coat the container Oil to fry

Mix the eggs with the sugar, add the flour (previously mixed with the Mistrà and the lemon juice), then add the melted butter and the salt.

After mixing for 10/15 minutes, add the yeast and continue mixing for another 15 minutes. You can use a mixing machine or a bread machine (programmed on mixing only and left with the cover opened).

When the dough starts detaching from the container’s walls you can put it in a bowl (previously coated with olive oil), cover everything with plastic wrap, and leave resting for 3 hours or more so it can raise.

When the dough is ready (doubled its volume), get a large, deep pan for frying. Fill it with oil and put it on the fire until the temperature is right (you’ll know that by putting a little piece of bread and noticing that it starts frying).

Oil your hands and take a handful of dough, make it flat and then put it in the pan to fry. With a spoon get some of the hot oil and spread it on top of the dough which will raise and become more like a ball. When the bottom of the “castagnola” starts getting golden you can turn it over, let it fry some more and then take it out of the oil.

You can season it with honey or Alchermes and sugar.

4 uova gr. 370 di farina gr. 20 di burro fuso 1 cucchiaio scarso di zucchero 3 cuchiai di Mistrà mezzo limone spremuto un pizzico di sale una cartina da ½ kg olio q. b. olio per friggere

Sbattete le uova con lo zucchero, aggiungete la farina (a cui avrete unito precedentemente il Mistrà e il succo di limone), il burro e il pizzico di sale.

Impastate tutto per 10/15 minuti e incorporate la cartina continuando per altri 15 minuti.

L’impasto si può fare usando l’impastatrice, uno sbattitore con fruste o la macchina per il pane (programma solo impasto), avendo cura di tenere aperto il coperchio.

Quando l’impasto tende a staccarsi dalla ciotola mettetelo in un contenitore con dell’olio di oliva avendo cura che tutto sia ben oliato, coprite con la pellicola trasparente e lasciate lievitare per un minimo 3 ore.

Versare una quantità abbondante di olio per friggere in una padella dai bordi piuttosto alti e portate a giusta temperatura (la mia prova consiste nell’immergere una fetta di pane e aspettare di vederla friggere).

Togliete la pellicola e iniziare la frittura: con le mani ben oliate prendete un pizzico di pasta e stendetela un po’ (deve essere lavorata lo stretto indispensabile), poi immergetela nell’olio bollente. Con un mestolo prendete un po’ di quell’olio e versatelo delicatamente sopra le castagnole che nel frattempo vedrete gonfiarsi. Giratele solo quando la parte immersa avrà preso un colore dorato.

Condite a piacere con del buon miele, Alchermes e zucchero o entrambi.

y favorite time of the year is Easter.

Every year, I invite about 30 people for a traditional English Easter lunch. We sit outside in the Tuscan sun and devour two huge Gigot of Lamb, Gratin Dauphinois, minted peas and my classic Simnel cake.

I love this cake as it dates back to Tudor times. Traditionally, servant girls used to take it their mothers on Mothering Sunday but it has now become an Easter specialty. The 11 balls on top of the cake are said to represent 11 of the 12 disciples of Jesus. Judas the betrayer who was the twelfth is not included. This is a rich fruitcake, covered with marzipan, which will keep for several weeks.

Serves 8-10 175gr. butter, 175gr. dark brown Moscovado sugar, 3 large eggs, beaten, 175gr. plain flour, 1 tsp baking powder, pinch of salt, ½ tsp ground mixed spice, 350gr. raisins, currants and sultanas, 55gr. chopped mixed peel including glace cherries, ½ tbsp. apricot jam, 2 packets of store bought marzipan.

Preheat the oven to 140C/275F/Gas. Grease and line an 18 cm cake tin. Cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and then sift in the flour, baking powder, salt and mixed spice. It may curdle but don’t worry. Add the mixed dried fruit, peel and grated lemon zest and stir into the mixture.

Put the mixture into the cake tin. Bake in the preheated oven for 1¾ hours. Test by inserting a skewer in the middle - if it comes out clean, it is ready. Once baked, remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

Meanwhile, roll out the marzipan and cut into strips. Leave some marzipan for the 11 disciple balls.

Brush the top of the cooled cake with the apricot jam. Lay the strips on the top of the cake and then criss-cross the other marzipan strips over the top.

Roll 11 small balls in the palm of your hand and place evenly on the outer rim of the cake (see photo).

Lightly heat the cake topping using a cook’s blowtorch, until the marzipan is golden-brown.

asqua è la festa che amo di più. Ogni anno invito una trentina di amici e preparo il pranzo secondo la tradizioP ne Inglese. All’aperto, sotto il sole della Toscana, ci sediamo

a tavola, per gustare due grandi cosci d’agnello, le patate al gratin del Delfinato, i piselli alla menta e la mia classica torta “Simnel”.

Il dolce è uno dei miei preferiti perché la sua origine risale alla dinastia dei Tudor. Secondo la tradizione, le ragazze a servizio portavano questa torta alle loro madri quando tornavano a casa per festeggiare la Domenica dedicata alla festa della mamma, ma è poi diventata una specialità pasquale. Sopra la torta, undici palline rappresentano altrettanti discepoli di Gesù. Il dodicesimo, Giuda il traditore, non è incluso.

La torta è ricca di frutta, è ricoperta di marzapane e dura diverse settimane.

Ingredienti (per 8-10 persone): 175 gr. di burro, 175 gr. di zucchero scuro di canna Moscovado, 3 uova sbattute, 175 gr. di farina bianca, 1 cucchiaino di lievito per dolci, un pizzico di sale, ½ cucchiaino di spezie miste triturate, 350 gr. di uvetta, 55gr. di bucce di frutti canditi triturate, incluse ciliegie candite, ½ cucchiaino di marmellata di albicocche, 2 pacchetti di marzapane come si trova nei supermercati o nei negozi per pasticceria.

Preriscaldate il forno a 140 gradi (275 gradi Farhenait). Imburrate una teglia da torta alta 18 cm. Sbattete il burro con lo zucchero per ottenere una crema morbida e soffice. Aggiungete le uova continuando a sbattere, la farina, il lievito, il sale e le spezie. L’impasto potrebbe aggrumarsi ma non è un problema. Aggiungete la frutta secca e la scorza di limone grattata.

Versate il composto nella teglia e infornate lasciandolo cuocere per un’ora e tre quarti. Per vedere se è pronto potete inserire uno stecchino al centro ed estrarlo. Se è pulito, la torta è cotta.

Toglietela dal forno e lasciatela riposare. Nel frattempo stendete il marzapane e tagliatelo a strisce, lasciando una parte per formare le palline dei discepoli. Quando la torta è fredda, spennellatela con la marmellata di albicocche e ricopritela con le strisce di marzapane disponendole a scacchiera come per una crostata. Formate undici palline con il resto del marzapane e ponetele a cerchio sulla torta (vedi foto).

Riscaldate la superficie della torta delicatamente con una torcia per cuochi, per ottenere la classica doratura del marzapane.

fifty shades of readers

by Marta Cerù The first time the book “Fifty shades of grey” caught my eye was in the window display of the boutique shop Regina, in Città di Castello. The artistic display showed beautiful, sexy dresses, along with three books by the English writer E. L. James.

The title of the best selling trilogy is a play on words about the main character Mr. Grey, and the color of his soul. All I knew about the books at that time was that the trilogy was about BSDM sex: a sexual relationship among people who have an agreement based on bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism. So, I read the first book. The story is a cliché. Anastasia is a very young, insecure and clumsy woman. She is beautiful but she doesn’t know it. She is a virgin in every sense. Mr. Grey is super rich, strong, fascinating, can fly his own helicopter and has a dark and mysterious past. They experience a mutual attraction right away, but Ana soon discovers that Mr. Grey is a control freak, a dominator in sex and life, and has a special “playroom” outfitted for sado-masochistic sex. Despite her dreams about a fairy tale prince, she gets involved in a non- traditional relationship based on pleasing her master.

After only a few chapters, the so called “hard sex” scenes become repetitive. I kept reading in hopes that something revealing would happen, but it didn’t. I am surprised by the enormous resonance of these books. Particularly the remarkable number of sales. The Gulliver bookstore in Città di Castello sold 400 copies of the first one in six months, 300 of the second and 250 of the third. So, I decided to ask some women friends, both Italians and foreigners who live in our Valley, what their impressions were.

“I decided to use the trilogy in my window, because of its popularity”, explains to me Federica, Regina’s owner.

“Everybody was talking about these books, and I had read them too. I found them quite upsetting though. It is hard to imagine how a woman could accept being abused so much in the name of love”.

“If it’s true that a good book is one that makes people talk about it, “Fifty shades of Grey” must be a masterpiece”, comments Veronica who studied in Perugia and 34

works in Milan. She only read the first one and found it predictable from the beginning: “Even the sex scenes are described in such a superficial way that the reader’s intelligence, if not her dignity, should be offended”. It is fun to count how many times E. L. James uses the words subconscious (82), whispers (101), crap (101) and “inner godness” (58).

Chiara is an avid reader, the manager of a substantial business. She received the trilogy as a gift from her husband. She read the first one and tried to continue with the second but found it so repetitive that she kept skipping ten pages at a time in order to finish the story: “I am done with it, it is just rubbish”, she told me.

South African Liz struggled through the book, curious to understand what happened to Mr. Grey in the past, only to realize that there is no answer in the first book. She found it boring and she has no intention to continue: “I think that women who liked it must have a very dull sexual life, if any at all!”.

Sherida, who came to live in this area from New York decided not to even start it. “I couldn’t bring myself to read such graphic sex”, she comments, “I guess my mouth is bigger than my bite. I am not as tough a girl as I thought”. Heidi, who lives in Los Angeles and organizes screen writing courses here in the area, also teaches women self defense. She heard many comments from a variety of friends who had issues with the overall poor quality of the writing as well as the anti-feminist slant. “I even have one friend in the BSDM community who said it was completely silly from that perspective”, she tells me, “I’m just annoyed it is so disempowering to women”. Alessia, a physicist and a dancer, told me she saw the book in the hands of Nicole Minetti, Berlusconi’s notorious “accomplice”: “I d e cided that if she was reading it, the level of the book must have been very low!”.

In the end I found absolutely zero positive feedback about this book. So, what is really going on? Are we all fooled by marketing strategies and trends? I guess so, and I have had enough of the saga.

I am reminded of a younger me, in a summer spent with some dearest girlfriends preparing for some University exams. We were studying physics all day and in the evening one of us would read aloud from Anais Nin’s erotic short stories. She is primarily known for the journals she kept since the 1920’s, and is widely considered the first woman to publish sexy literature in the western world. If you are curious about this subject I recommend her book “Delta of Venus”. You may find it refreshing, after the delusion of “Fifty shades...”.

cinquanta sfumature di lettrici di Marta Cerù La prima volta che ho visto il libro “Cinquanta sfumature di grigio” è stata passando davanti alla boutique “Regina” a Città di Castello. In vetrina, assieme ad abiti sexy, c’erano i tre volumi della scrittrice inglese E. L. James.

Da allora mi è capitato spesso di sentire parlare delle “Fifty Shades of Grey” (in originale il gioco di parole è fra il nome del protagonista Mr. Grey e il colore del suo animo tormentato).

Mi sono fatta incuriosire dal fenomeno della trilogia basata su una relazione sessuale BSDM, ovvero di un rapporto consensuale basato sulla sottomissione e dominazione. Così anche io ho letto il primo volume.

La storia è un cliché: Anastasia, la giovanissima protagonista è insicura e maldestra, bellissima ma senza saperlo e per di più vergine; Mr Grey è il ricco seduttore, forte, affascinante, corredato di elicottero e passato oscuro. Si incontrano e l’attrazione è tangibile da subito, ma presto si scopre che lui è un dominatore nel sesso e nella vita, e che ha una stanza “delle torture”, attrezzata per esperienze sado-maso.

Il fatto che Anastasia sogni il principe azzurro non le impedisce di prestarsi ai desideri del dominatore, iniziando con lui una relazione non convenzionale.

Le scene di sesso, che tanto hanno fatto parlare, sono ripetitive, e solo l’aspettativa di qualche colpo di scena mi ha spinto a finire il libro. Ero sorpresa dalla risonanza provocata da una storia banale, per di più scritta male. Solo a Città di Castello, la libreria Gulliver ha venduto 400 copie del primo volume in sei mesi, 300 del secondo e 250 del terzo. Così ho deciso di indagare nel mio circondario di donne, italiane o straniere per capire l’impatto del fenomeno in un ambiente dove convivono mondi diversi tra loro.

“Ho deciso di usare la trilogia per allestire la mia vetrina sull’onda del fenomeno”, mi spiega Federica, proprietaria del negozio Regina. “Tutti ne parlavano e anche io avevo letto i libri. Il tema è inquietante. E’ difficile per me immaginare una donna che accetta certi compromessi in nome dell’amore”.

“Se è vero che un buon libro è quello che fa parlare di sé, “Cinquanta sfumature di grigio” è sicuramente un capolavoro”, mi scrive Veronica che ha studiato a Perugia, lavora a Milano e ha letto solo il primo volume. “Ma io l’ho trovato pieno di luoghi comuni sin dalle primissime pagine. Persino le scene di sesso, fonte di tanto scalpore,

sono descritte in modo superficiale. E mortificano, se non la dignità, di sicuro l’intelligenza delle lettrici.

E’ vero che la lettura può essere semplice svago, ma può rimanerlo anche se prevede qualcosa in più dei circa quattro verbi e altrettanti sostantivi ripetuti per cinquecento pagine”. Ci si può divertire a contare le ripetizioni di parole come “la mia dea interiore” (58 volte), subconscio (82 volte), sospiri (101 volte), merda (101), e così via.

Chiara, manager di successo e divoratrice di libri, ha ricevuto la trilogia in regalo dal marito. Ha letto il primo e affrontato il secondo saltando decine di pagine alla volta solo per la curiosità di finire la storia: “Sono davvero spazzatura”, commenta e non ha nessuna intenzione di leggere il terzo. Liz, originaria del Sud Africa, l’ha letto con la continua aspettativa di capire meglio il passato oscuro di Mr Grey, ma alla fine si è accorta che avrebbe dovuto affrontare gli altri due volumi e ha mollato.

L’ha trovato scontato e noioso: “Evidentemente chi lo apprezza deve avere una vita sessuale povera o nulla!”

Sherida, venuta a vivere in zona da New York, mi dice di non averlo letto perché non sopporta descrizioni così grafiche di sesso: “Non sono poi una dura come mi presento!”. Heidi, che a Los Angeles aiuta le donne nell’autodifesa e organizza corsi per sceneggiatori nelle nostre zone, si è sentita irritata dal fatto che fosse così denigrativo per le donne. Mi racconta di amiche che l’hanno trovato antifemminista nonché scritto con i piedi. Una in particolare, che frequenta il mondo del BSDM, ha giudicato il libro ridicolo e irrealistico. Alessia, fisica e ballerina, l’ha visto in mano a Nicole Minetti, “complice” famosa di Berlusconi: “Ho deciso che se lo leggeva lei, il livello culturale del libro doveva essere davvero basso!”.

Ma a chi sono piaciute le “Cinquanta sfumature”? Siamo rimaste tutte incantate dalla pubblicità a tappeto e dal fenomeno sociale? Credo di sì e non leggerò gli altri volumi, mi sono annoiata abbastanza.

Terminata la lettura e l’indagine, ho ripensato a un’estate dei primi anni Novanta, passata con alcune amiche a preparare gli esami universitari. Studiavamo fisica per ore, e la sera per svagarci ascoltavamo una di noi leggere a voce alta i racconti erotici di Anais Nin, scrittrice del Novecento, famosa soprattutto come diarista ma anche perché una delle prime donne occidentali a cimentarsi con letteratura erotica. Per chi fosse interessato al genere, consiglio la raccolta di racconti “Il Delta di Venere”. Può essere rigenerante, dopo la delusione delle “Cinquanta sfumature...”.

Better than a Gold Medal

by David Watson During the 2009-2012 season, the eight and younger Mini Rugby team lost every game they played. They only scored three tries in the entire season. Considering they played more than thirty games it was quite an achievement. Perhaps “achievement” is not the right word since it is ordinarily reserved for feats which are anointed with medals, trophies and ribbons. None of these trappings were in the programme of activity for the 2009-2010 team. Yet to my mind they deserved a medal, and perhaps their reward was even greater.

Are you thinking –“ Oh no! - We are about to be told of the character building experience involved in losing”?

Well don’t. I’m not going to use that speech. From a coaching perspective the team presented a difficult proposition: how do you keep kids motivated and improve their ability when by all normal measurements of success they are failing, a point reinforced game after game.

Their difficulty arose from misguided preconceptions.

The first preconception to be discarded was that the objective of the game was to win. When I say discarded I do not mean completely abandoned, which would be impossible. We all like to win. It is the hope of winning which in part provides the motivation to try hard. However, for the U8 the idea of winning became like the end of a long novel. You have some idea of what is going to happen but it remains a distant possibility. So whilst the objective of a game is usually to win, if it’s not fun, no one is going to play. Luckily, and possibly due to some form of evolutionary urge to chase rabbits and pigs across the savannah, if you give a group of kids a ball they will quickly begin to have fun chasing each other.

The second preconception to be discarded was the traditional method of coaching which involved repetitive drills. Instead, we played Last Man Standing (tackling), Stuck In The Mud 36

(team work), Netball with a rugby ball (movement into space), Touch Rugby (passing), Tag Rugby with the players having a piece of ribbon hanging from the back of their shorts like a tail (elusiveness), Dodge Ball, crawling, relay races, etc. The only game we avoided playing during practice was Rugby, and in the end it became our favourite.

During official games the player’s personal goals were set within their reach, such as; try and perform two tackles, try to dodge one opponent, string three passes together etc.

They still didn’t win-but in the process they discovered the joys of getting completely filthy without worrying about the consequences of diving in puddles in winter without a thought for catching cold. They demonstrated determination in the face of almost certain failure. They formed friendships based on a joint adventure that challenged them mentally and physically, and all of them demonstrated courage. Not the courage required to make a risky move in a computer game or a game of chess, but the courage born from confronting physical fears.

In their next season, 2010 -2011 everything changed.

Despite being a team of only seven core players (eight players are required to field a mini rugby under eight team) four of its members were in their second year having played during that remarkable winless season. Not a recipe for victory. But they had really begun to like playing rugby and even started playing in the park during their free time away from the pitch. They were ready to enjoy their first tournament in Prato.

Game one. Lazio who agreed to play seven versus seven owing to the fact that we only had seven players. Lazio had enough players to field two teams (which they actually did). The game began with our team being slightly offended for being mistaken for an U6 team due to their size. At the end of the first half the score was 1-1 and Lazio looked worried as they brought on an entirely fresh team for the second half. Lazio won 3 – 1 and would go on to win the tournament, but Castello under 8 had played great Rugby, tackling players twice their size and more importantly they played as a team.

Game two. We lost to the host team Prato. Was a two season long losing streak beginning?

Game three against Livorno. We scored the first try. And then a second! Castello U8 rugby went on to win their first game ever and it felt like a world cup victory!

At the end of the tournament I was approached by a number of coaches who congratulated me on the way the team played, in particular one coach said although they were the smallest, they played some of the best rugby in the competition.

With their courage, perseverance and new found pride they would go on to win many games in the 2010- 2011 season, always at their best when they could play seven a side. They became a real team, and this is an award that no medal or trophy can compare to.

Meglio di una Medaglia d’Oro di David Watson Nella stagione 2009-2010, la squadra di Mini Rugby “Under Eight” (minori di otto anni) ha perso ogni partita che ha giocato. I bambini hanno segnato solo tre mete nell’intero periodo. E, considerate le oltre trenta partite giocate, hanno quasi battuto un record. O forse “record” non è la parola giusta, dato che in genere viene utilizzato per risultati premiati da medaglie, trofei o corone. Ma la squadra di quella stagione non aveva ottenuto nulla di tutto ciò. Eppure ai miei occhi avrebbero meritato molto più di una semplice medaglia e forse quello che hanno raggiunto è un premio ancora più importante.

Scommetto che state già pensando: “Oh, no! Un’altra storia su come l’esperienza di perdere rafforzi il carattere”. Niente è più lontano dal mio intento di una tale predica. Il mio scopo come allenatore è affrontare le difficoltà di una squadra che partita dopo partita, se valutata secondo gli standard comuni del successo, fallisce.

Come è possibile, anche in un tale scenario, mantenere alto il morale e migliorare le capacità di ogni giocatore?

Sono convinto che gli scogli da superare derivino da alcuni preconcetti devianti.

La prima idea da scartare è quella che vincere sia l’unico scopo di una partita. E quando dico scartare non intendo abbandonare la convinzione completamente. Sarebbe impossibile, considerato che tutti amano vincere, e che proprio la speranza della vittoria fornisce la motivazione a impegnarsi al meglio. Però i bambini del Mini Rugby di Castello, pensavano alla vittoria come alla felice conclusione di una lunga favola. In pratica anche se l’obiettivo di una partita è la vittoria, se nel perseguirlo non ci si diverte, nessuno vorrà giocare. D’altro canto, con un po’ di fortuna, e forse anche a causa di un istinto evolutivo a cacciare qualsiasi cosa tenti di sfuggirci, è naturale per dei bambini cominciare a rincorrersi, acchiapparsi e divertirsi, quando si dà loro una palla.

Il secondo pregiudizio da cancellare è che l’allenamento consista nella tradizionale ripetizione di esercizi sportivi.

Il mio metodo si basa nell’allenare i bambini facendoli giocare: “Acchiapparella” serve per imparare a placcare; “Prigionieri del Fango” per stimolare il lavoro di squadra; “Netball Rugby”, una sorta di basket con la palla da Rugby, per imparare a passarsi la palla; “Tag Rugby”, un tipo di acchiapparella in cui i giocatori devono strapparsi uno spago attaccato come una coda dietro i pantaloncini, per acquisire la capacità di eludere l’avversario. E così via ho utilizzato altri giochi come “Dodge Ball”, “Gattonamento”, “Corse al rallentatore”, tutto tranne il vero Rugby. Che alla fine è diventato il gioco preferito da tutti.

Durante le partite ufficiali, stimolavo i bambini a perseguire obiettivi facilmente raggiungibili con le loro capa-

cità: per esempio dicevo loro di eseguire due placcaggi, fermare un oppositore, legare tre passaggi, e così via. È vero che non vincevano, ma scoprivano la soddisfazione di sporcarsi le mani senza preoccuparsi delle conseguenze, nel senso di affondare nelle pozzanghere in inverno, senza il pensiero di prendersi un raffreddore. Il risultato è stato che rimanevano determinati, nonostante la certezza di perdere. Ho visto formarsi amicizie basate sull’avventura di una sfida comune mentale e fisica. E tutti hanno esibito grande coraggio. Non il coraggio di compiere una mossa rischiosa in un videogioco o una partita a scacchi, ma quello di affrontare le proprie paure fisiche.

Grazie all’alenamento di quell’anno privo di vittorie, tutto è cambiato nella stagione del 2010-2011. Quattro giocatori erano ormai cresciuti e passati di livello tra i più grandi e nel Mini Rugby erano rimasti solo sette bambini (di fatto in partita il minimo di giocatori per squadra è otto). Non c’erano quindi le premesse per una stagione vittoriosa. Eppure tutti nella squadra amavano davvero il Rugby e lo praticavano anche durante il tempo libero al parco. A inizio stagione erano pronti per il primo torneo a Prato.

Prima partita. La squadra del Lazio ha messo in campo sette giocatori in modo da rendere bilanciata la partita, nonostante avesse abbastanza bambini da formare due squadre. I bambini del Castello sono scesi in campo un po’ offesi perché, a causa delle loro stature minute, erano stati scambiati per una squadra di Under Six. Ma si sono ripresi e alla fine del primo tempo avevano pareggiato uno a uno, tanto da preoccupare gli avversari e spingerli a far entrare in campo una formazione nuova per il resto della partita. Alla fine il Lazio ha vinto tre a uno ed è passato al turno successivo, ma il Castello si è difeso alla grande, e i bambini hanno placcato avversari grandi il doppio di loro facendo davvero squadra.

Seconda partita. Anche il Prato, che giocava in casa, ha battuto la mia squadra. Eravamo alle solite, iniziava una seconda stagione da perdenti?

Terza partita. Il Castello segna la prima meta contro il Livorno. E la seconda! Gli Under Eight castellani hanno vinto, ed è stato come se avessero meritato la Coppa del Mondo!

Alla fine del torneo, alcuni allenatori si sono congratulati per il modo in cui i bambini di Castello avevano giocato, arrivando persino a dirmi che, nonostante fossero i più piccoli di statura, erano stati i migliori rugbisti della competizione.

Grazie al coraggio, alla determinazione e al nuovo senso di orgoglio di squadra, il Castello ha collezionato diverse vittorie nel periodo 2010-2011. Soprattutto nelle partite in cui giocava in sette contro sette, la formazione è stata eccellente. Al di là di tutto i bambini sono diventati una vera squadra, il loro premio più importante, migliore di qualsiasi medaglia o trofeo.
