Skip the tourist traps and explore like a local! Discover Amsterdam by following the habits of real locals that know their city inside out.
1 EETSALON VAN DOBBEN Korte Reguliersdwarsstraat 5-7-9 Van Dobben is probably the city’s finest traditional sandwich shop. Top of the menu is ‘kroket’, a fried roll stuffed with creamy ragout and veal, covered with breadcrumbs. More than just a sandwich, this is a sumptuous and hearty lunchtime treat that puts your soggy ham roll to shame.
2 TUSCHINSKI Reguliersbreestraat 26-34 Have you ever watched a movie in a monumental theatre? Tuschinski is definitely the most beautiful cinema building in Holland. It opened in 1921 and has an overwhelming art deco look.
3 VLAAMS FRITESHUIS
4 WYNAND FOCKINK Pijlsteeg 31 Nestling in a hidden arcade behind the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, Wynand Fockink serves an incredible array of jenever - a fine local juniper liquor, from which gin was reputed to evolve. The bartenders always encourage you to drink Amsterdam-style: standing at the bar with hands on your back (to stop you falling over, presumably).
5 DE BEKEERDE SUSTER Kloveniersburgwal 6 De Bekeerde Suster is a brew pub with great beers like Manke Monnik, Witte Antonia and Blonde Barbier and serves tasty meals. Also order a portion of bitterballen, one of Holland’s favorite snacks!
6 SLAGERIJ VET Zeedijk 99 The best meal according to many Dutch people? ‘Stamppot met rookworst.’ Slagerij Vet has everything, and even a bit more. It also serves delicious sandwiches topped with the very best meats. Warm and ready-prepared meals are an option, too.
VLEMINCKX Voetboogstraat 33 From morning to evening, there’s always a crowd waiting in this tiny alley in Amsterdam. Just get in line like the locals and order a ‘patatje’: homemade crispy fries with a choice of toppings, like mayonnaise, tartare sauce or ‘oorlog’: peanut sauce, mayonnaise and onions.

7 STUBBE HARING Corner of Singel/Haarlingersluis Haring is Dutch herring, served fresh and raw. Despite sounding a little gruesome, it’s a hugely popular snack in Amsterdam and actually quite delicious. Perhaps the presentation isn’t as delicate as sushi, but it’s definitely more fun, as you grab the tail, cover it with onions and pickles, hold it up and eat bite by bite.

8 WINKEL 43 Noordermarkt 43 Winkel 43 bakes the perfect apple pie. Many locals think it’s better than their grandmother’s. Stuffed with juicy apples in a thick crust and topped with fresh whipped cream. An apple pie a day, keeps the doctor away!
9 CAFÉ NOL Westerstraat 109 Ready for some Dutch tearjerkers? Café Nol is famous since 1966 for their cozy sing-a-long nights. The interior is a mix between a brothel and your grandparents place, so you won’t get bored for a second. Embrace your inner singer in this Dutch version of karaoke.
10 ALBERT CUYP MARKT Albert Cuypstraat For over a century, locals get their fruit, vegetables and fish at the Albert Cuyp Market. But there’s so much more to find. Six days a week you can buy cheap clothes, cosmetics and jewellery sold by born and raised Amsterdam residents. We hope you enjoy their corny jokes!

RECIPE
Typical Dutch
apple pie
My grandma was famous for her apple pie. Growing up in ‘De Pijp’ (Amsterdam South) my mom delivered those cakes almost weekly at parties. Since grandma's name contained the word heroes, we named it: heroes apple pie. Here is her secret. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. DIRECTIONS 1. Mix flour, salt and sugar. Cut in butter with 2 knives or pastry blender. Add water a little add a time until dough is crumbly. Store in fridge for an hour. Form ½ of dough into a round disc and place on floured surface. Roll out and line the pie plate. Roll remaining dough out for the top crust.
2. Core, peel and slice apples. Combine sugars, flour, cinnamon, salt and lemon rind in a large bowl. Add apples and mix to combine. Spread apple mixture into the unbaked pastry shell. Spread strips of dough over mixture. Dot with butter and put color and shine on pastry crust with an egg wash. Bake at 450 F/220 C for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 F/180 C and continue baking 30 minutes.
INGREDIENTS DOUGH ✔ 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour ✔ ½ teaspoon salt ✔ 1 teaspoon sugar ✔ 16 tablespoons (2 sticks) cold unsalted
butter, cut into pieces ✔ ¼ to ½ cup ice water
INGREDIENTS APPLE MIXTURE ✔ 6 cups thinly sliced (sour) apples ✔ 6 tablespoons
brown sugar
✔ 6 tablespoons white sugar ✔ ½ cup flour ✔ 1 teaspoon cinnamon ✔ ¼ teaspoon salt ✔ ¼ cup butter, cubed ✔ ½ teaspoon lemon rind ✔ 1 egg optional

TIPS AND TRICKS
Cycling in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the perfect city to explore by bike. But even if you only pedal around for an hour, it requires steely nerves and sharp eyes.
FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD Don’t cycle on pavements, shopping streets and motorways. GIVE A SIGN Always signal with your hand which direction you are going.
LIGHT AT NIGHT Turn on your lights after dark. KEEP AN EYE ON OTHER TRAFFIC Watch out for other traffic at all times. Scooters zip down the bike lanes, taxis speed down the tram rails and large delivery vans might have trouble seeing you. WATCH OUT FOR TRAM RAILS It’s easy to get your tires stuck in the rails. Cross them at a sharp angle.

STAY IN YOUR LANE Use the bicycle lane on the right-hand side of the road, marked out by white lines and bike symbols.

MAKE ROOM FOR FELLOW CYCLISTS Don’t bike more than 2 people across, keep pace with the other cyclists, and pull over to answer your phone or check the map.
AVOID RUSH HOUR Between 7 - 9 am or 5 - 7 pm, there are thousands of bikes on the road, often resulting in big queues at junctions. DON’T BREAK THE RULES Do not cycle through red lights and don’t bike at night without lights.

LOCK IT RIGHT Always lock your bicycle up to something immovable and use the official bike racks.

Ray Slijngaard 2 Unlimited conquered the world in the 90’s and scored a string of 16 hits in a row like No Limit, Twilight Zone, Jump For Joy, Maximum Overdrive and Get Ready For This. This Eurodance act was fronted by an Amsterdam duo: singer Anita Doth and rapper Ray Slijngaard.
FAVOURITE AREAS ‘I like the trendy pubs and places in Amsterdam-Zuid and especially De Pijp. I like to sit and relax at Marie Heinekenplein and I also like the little shops and market stables that sell exotic vegetables and stuff.’ MEMORIES ‘As a kid, I was at Nieuwmarkt all the time. My grandmother used to have a pub over there. Me and my friends just hung out there a bit. I felt very much at home over there.’ BEST CLUBS IN TOWN ‘I was around 13 when I went to a club for the first time. I went to Leidseplein to a place called Bunny and Bunny Star. I was way too young, but I knew the bouncer, so I could easily get in. I also often visited Club 10

Escape, which still is one of the best Amsterdams venue.’ RESTAURANTS ‘I love sushi. Yamazoto at Okura Hotel has the best sushi in town. MOMO is also a favourite of mine. I like a fancy meal, but I also enjoy a good hamburger at Hard Rock Cafe.’ TIPS FOR A NIGHT OUT ‘I used to go to clubs a lot, but I don’t go that much anymore. I just feel a bit old. Nowadays, I like to go to a nice restaurant and drink wine with my friends. I don’t like it when the music is too loud and you can’t talk to people. I do like to go to the Irish Pub at Leidseplein, to watch soccer with a cold beer. I’m on tour several nights a week, so when I have a day off, I like to relax on my couch!’ SNACK ATTACK ‘I do have a guilty pleasure, when it comes to streetfood. Like eating a ‘kaassouflé’: melted cheese in a crust, from FEBO. Yes, from the vendingmachines in the wall.’ HOTSPOTS ‘The clothing shops at Nieuwendijk. There are far better clothes stores in Amsterdam than in Germany, where I live nowadays. I love fashion, so I really enjoy shopping in Amsterdam.’

TYPICALLY AMSTERDAM ‘I’ve travelled all over the world, but Amsterdam is special. It is well-known as a very liberal place. I think the city is beautiful, and I like the terraces, especially in summer. People from Amsterdam are very direct, and they like to joke around. We are very down to earth. When you’re in a limousine in Los Angeles, people will roll out the red carpet for you. Over here we are like: we don’t care. I like that attitude.’
