10

DUTCH WORDS YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW

Crash course

1 DANKJEWEL!

So you don’t speak Dutch at all? No problem! These are 10 Dutch words you seriously need to know. It’s guaranteed to get you a smile.

Dankjewel (dahnk-ye-vel) means ‘thank you’ and can be translated as ‘thank you indeed’. The formal version is ‘dank u wel’ (dahnkoo-vel). Use this local expression when you want to say ‘thanks’.

3 FIETS

Pronounced ‘feets’, and it means ‘bike’. There are more than 881,000 bicycles in Amsterdam. That’s four times the number of cars. About 57% of Amsterdammers use their ‘fiets’ on a daily basis. Some estimate around 100,000 bicycles are stolen in Amsterdam each year.

2 HOE GAAT HET?

This means ‘how are you?’ and is pronounced ‘hu-haatet’. The usual reply is ‘goed’ and you may also add ‘en met jou?’ (Anne-met-yaw?) - that is ‘fine, thanks. how are you?’.

4 DOEI!

‘Doo-ee’ is the equivalent of ‘bye bye’. It has a very funny sound. Dutch people love to say it all the time, both to friends and strangers. It’s very informal, but you can use this word without shame.

5 BOTERHAM

Literally translated as ‘butter ham’ - it actually means ‘sandwich’ or ‘a slice of bread’. DOEI!

10 DUTCH

WORDS YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW 8 LEKKER

This word can be roughly translated into tasty, except that it can be applied to almost anything, from having a nice body to a nice conversation. It means ‘really good’, or ‘comfortable’ or ‘like it’. When you’re eating something really delicious, wave your hand across your cheek and smile. Everyone understands that what you’re eating is incredibly tasty, or ‘lekker’. HOW TO SWEAR IN DUTCH 10 DIRTY WORDS Eikel - dick head Gelul - bullshit Hufter - asshole Klootzak - asshole Lik m’n reet - kiss my ass Klote - damn! 6 PATATJE OORLOG

7 GEZELLIG

9 MOOI

10 PARAPLU

Translated literally al ‘war fries’. You will get french fries, served with peanut sauce, mayonnaise and finely diced raw onion.

Pretty much anything in Dutch is ‘mooi’, or ‘pretty’, ‘beautiful’ or ‘sweet’. The best translation is something like ‘pretty’, but it means more along the lines of ‘beautiful’. A town or a city can be ‘mooi’. A guy or a girl can be ‘mooi’. And - of course Amsterdam is ‘mooi’.

If a house is ‘gezellig’, it’s cozy and homelike, but an event can be ‘gezellig’, too. Chatting with your friends is also ‘gezellig’, as well as nestling up in front of the fireplace. But if someone is on their phone during dinner all the time, they are not being ‘gezellig’.

Meaning ‘umbrella’. Most propably one of the most used Dutch words. Does it rain a lot in Amsterdam? Yes! That’s why you need a ‘paraplu’ if you live in Amsterdam, or maybe two. And you have to learn to bicycle while holding an umbrella.
