Cycling
in amsterdam
Anna Luten (28) is the first bicycle mayor of Amsterdam (and the world). These are the favorite places of Amsterdam’s chief cyclist. NORTH Café Ceuvel (Korte Papaverweg 4) is a must go. It’s a showcase of sustainable innovation and a very fine restaurant. Before you go there, you can stop by at the EYE Film Institute (IJpromenade 1). I love the terrace of Pllek (TT Neveritaweg 59). An alternative to explore North Amsterdam: take the ferry at the right (direction IJplein) and cycle to FC Hyena (Aambeeldstraat 24), a new cinema and restaurant. Another attraction is Oedipus Brewery (Gedempte Hamerkanaal 85). For those who still have energy and curiosity left: once in your life, you should cycle from Amsterdam to Durgerdam or Marken.
10
Magazine
WESTERPARK Every visitor of Amsterdam should spend some time at Buurtboerderij Ons Genoegen (Spaarndammerdijk 319). After your visit, you can cycle over the Brettenpad to Spaarnwoude and Haarlem.
AMSTERDAM BIKE
IJBURG I like to go to Blijburg aan Zee (Pampuslaan 501), a sandy beach by the water with a bohemian vibe. I usually go there via Amsterdam East. It’s also great to go to Muiden afterwards. SOUTHEAST If you love food and adventure, you should really check out World of Food (Develstein 100). This is a huge food court with over 25 international food stands.
ALONG THE AMSTEL This is a well-known route among racing cyclists: the Rondehoep along the Amstel river to Ouderkerk. Be careful, it can be pretty busy with traffic, hikers, runners, bicyclists, e-bikes and Segways. On your way back home, try tHUIS aan de AMSTEL (Korte Ouderkerkerdijk 45) for a treat.
NEW WEST Tuinen van West (Tom Schreursweg 48) is an urban agriculture and nature reserve in the Amsterdam Nieuw-West area that not many people know. If you’re going there, stop by at De Cantina - Het Rijk van de Keizer (Joris van den Berghweg 101-111).
When in doubt,
PEDAL it out! ZUIDAS The famous Zuidas (including the Nieuwe Meer area) is an interesting part of Amsterdam, especially because of the architecture. Special tip for art lovers: the Akzo Nobel Essential Art Space building (Christian Cousin Street 2). EAST Frankendael (Middenweg 72) is a wonderful place for good food - all local and organic. Amsterdam East has many more beautiful places to explore, and there is often a bit more space for cycling than in the center. For example, consider cycling around Artis Amsterdam Royal Zoo (Plantage Kerklaan 38-40), Joods Historisch Museum (Nieuwe Amstelstraat 1) and don’t forget to grab a beer at Brouwerij ‘t IJ (Funenkade 7).
WESTERN GATE AREA Cycle to Zaandam via the western harbor area, get on the ferry and go back to Amsterdam. CENTRE And of course it’s just lovely to cycle on the canals. The underpass of the Rijksmuseum (Museumstraat 1) is also highly recommended. For me, this is the ultimate place to experience the Amsterdam culture. Don’t forget to have a look at the Spiegelgracht on the corner of the Prinsengracht, where it’s often very busy. During rush hours, you should actually stand there for 5 minutes to observe how everyone moves… you will be truly amazed!

Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age Photo: Evert Elzinga
Thirty colossal, 17th century group portraits from the Amsterdam Museum and the Rijksmuseum collections have been brought together for the first time ever in the Hermitage Amsterdam. HERMITAGE AMSTERDAM | AMSTEL 51 | PORTRAITGALLERYOFTHEGOLDENAGE.COM These ‘brothers and sisters’ of the Night Watch are unique all over the world and are rarely exposed due to their size. They show us regents, civic guards and merchants of all ranks, social classes and religions, standing together as brothers. Rembrandt’s ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman’ and portraits of civic guards including Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are but a few examples of the works of art that are on view in the Portrait Gallery of the Golden Age. NOW ON VIEW IN THE PORTRAIT GALLERY OF THE GOLDEN AGE: Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Deijman. The addition of two anatomy cabinets to the exhibition places the anatomy lesson in the context of the traditional Dutch group portrait from the 17th century for the first time. Together with over 30 enormous group portraits from the Dutch Golden Age, they illustrate the story of collective citizenship that is so typical of the Netherlands.

Welcome to ‘How to Be Dutch, the Quiz’: the questions that should be on the Dutch citizenship exam, according to American comedian Greg Shapiro, who’s been in the country for 20 years. If you’re looking for an official guide to the Netherlands, this is not it. But if you’re looking for some odd Dutch quirks – in snarky quiz form – then this book is for you. If you want to take the official Dutch exam, you can do it online. You can also see the results of many famous Dutch people who’ve taken the exam – and failed. So welcome to this self-made quiz. It can’t be any weirder than the real one… Available via Scheltema Boekverkopers, Rokin 9, Amsterdam.
