THE CONCEPT

HABITUATION: the diminishing of an innate response to a frequently repeated stimulus

DE:HABITUATION

is a collection of Jesmonite tiles and larger-scale pieces that explore incidental mark-making techniques.

Habituation results in parts of a landscape going unnoticed because they are no longer new. The collection, created for an interior setting, is designed to delay the occurence of habituation through hand-craft techniques that continuously produce unique and unexpected outcomes. In a time when technology is rapidly developing, and in many fields replacing people, design that celebrates the uniqueness of the human touch is becoming increasingly popular. The collection responds to this trend, demonstrating it has not been massproduced through its incidental processes.

FLOW Using hand processes inspired by marbling, the tiles in this range are all completely unique. Combining dyed and natural Jesmonite, these pieces capture, in tangible form, the process with which they were made. The tiles can be used in one colourway to create a sense of continuity or in multiple colourways for a greater impact. FLOW can be used on its own to create an all over surface pattern or paired with the other ranges as an accent of incidental.

INLAY Structed and geometric, these tiles are designed to contrast with the incidental ranges in the collection.

They are subtle and neutral, with pattern created through relief in greys and pale pinks. Placed in juxtaposition with the incidental patterns, INLAY is designed to accentuate and enhance, as well as add areas of calm against the visual complexity of the FLOW and DISARRANGE tiles.

CRINKLE CRINKLE celebrates incidental marks and one-off pieces through a textured relief created in the casting process. As with INLAY, these tiles are designed to be a neutral option, created in natural Jesmonite or tones of grey. Used on mass, they create a textural surface of completely unique tiles.

DISARRANGE DISARRANGE adds a playfulness to the collection. It contrasts to the fluidity of the marbled pieces, and the neutral tiles of INLAY and CRINKLE. The vivid colour combinations and geometric shapes are an abstract interpretation of environmental marks that ordinarily get overlooked. They can be curated as an energetic collage of shapes and colour on mass, or in conjunction with the incidental designs, as a bold contrast.

SIMPLIFY SIMPLIFY consists of single-colour tiles designed to balance the texture and pattern of the other ranges.

Used to add accents or all over colour SIMPLIFY is versatile and can be combined with any of the other designs. With a mixture of neutral tones of light grey and pink, and more statement tones of mustard, turquoise and navy, the range can be coupled with any of the other tiles.

FABRIC Alongside the tile collection, DE:HABITUATION consists of digitally printed fabrics, also inspired by the concept of transforming overlooked marks into a celebrated part of a space. With the same juxtaposition of structured shapes and incidental marks, digital collages of brightly coloured geometric shapes sit against irregular overall repeats inspired by patterns made during mark-making processes.

Visually referencing the tile collection in colour and pattern, the two elements are designed to work together in an interior space.

The fabrics are digitally printed onto 240gsm cotton.

They are intended to be a versatile textile designed for soft furnishings, drapery, and light upholstery.
