SPRING IN OUR STEP
We’re embracing the ‘new’ here at Mollie HQ and are getting very excited about the lovely things the spring season is bringing. If, like us, trying new things is one of your 2016 resolutions, have a go at a different technique. You can make our leather booties (page 85) or starburst art mirror (page 63) without specialist tools. Or if this is the year you’ve decided to try embroidery, our easy sampler (page 79) with a full stitch guide is the perfect starting place. Easter falls early this year so start getting ready with our cover star bunny (page 20) – he’s our new fave. For the editorial team there’s even more change in the air as we’re about to welcome two staff members in the form of our new editor plus a new designer on our art team. All will be revealed next month! Till then, enjoy our seasonal makes (and share them via #molliemakers).

Diversifying your skills with…
MARY JANE BAXTER From gate-crashing hat-making festivals to high-altitude sat-nav clangers, we learn about life on the road with the mobile milliner
Describe your style in a few words? I’d say my style is 1940s land girl meets Rita Hayworth, with a scattering of sequins and a pair of granny shoes! I love the 1940s and the idea of practical skills coupled with an attempt at glamour, even under those difficult circumstances. Is there such a thing as a typical working day for you? Not really, but I always have at least two cups of tea. Even when I was doing shifts at the BBC and getting up at 5am, I always had a boiled egg, half a bagel – I have everything in halves, even slices of cake – and a cup of tea. I have to start the day with a proper breakfast.
Words: ANNE WOLLENBERG Photographs: CARO WEISS
Somewhere in between shifts at BBC Brussels, Mary Jane Baxter realised she wanted to follow a different path. So she swapped full-time foreign reporting for freelance work, studied couture millinery, bought a flat in Deptford – near one of London’s best flea markets – and sold her first hat collection to Harvey Nichols. Applying her media skills to her interest in craft, she has reported on the ‘make do and mend’ trend for Newsnight, been a presenter on Paul Martin’s Handmade Revolution and 28 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 63
is the author of two books, Chic on a Shoestring and The Modern Girl’s Guide to Hatmaking. Last year, she took her revamped camper van, Bambi, on a four-month tour of Europe, writing and blogging, running workshops and doing impromptu craft projects. She splits her time between Deptford, where she has a share of a ginger cat called Ninja, and staying with her brother in Montrose, north-east Scotland. And, as we discovered when we caught up with her, she’s always itching to get back on the road…
How did you learn millinery and hone your craft? I always loved making things and sewing. I was also quite academic and I followed that route, became a journalist, joined the BBC and worked my way up to becoming a foreign correspondent. It’s an incredibly busy job that cuts into every aspect of your life. I spent two years covering major stories in Brussels and realised I’d never have time to do anything creative. So I told my boss I was going to study hat-making and did a one-year part-time BTEC in millinery at Kensington and Chelsea College, London, while freelancing at the

BBC. I then went to work for milliner Stephen Jones in Covent Garden a couple of days a week. Why was this the right time to travel around Europe? I was feeling drained and needed to recharge creatively, and it was something I’d wanted to do for a very long time. I took voluntary redundancy from the BBC last April, something I’d been thinking about for a while as it was becoming increasingly difficult to juggle so many
balls. The money from that enabled me to take Bambi around Europe for a few months. I’ve spent the past ten years doing loads of jobs at once out of financial necessity. Now, for the first time, I can fully concentrate on my raft of creative activities.

Did you plan your travels in advance? The first month was planned. I’ve got friends in Belgium, so I did some workshops there including a pop-up session for kids making brooches and decorations from recycled paper. I met lots of other

LIVING home tour
Leigh Metcalf’s characterful Victorian house is a treasure trove of pre-loved finds Words: CATHERINE DEAN Photography: LEIGH METCALF
Blogger, writer and photographer Leigh Metcalf relocated to London from her home city of Atlanta, Georgia in 2010. The move was prompted by her husband, Andrew, accepting a job transfer, and the couple settled in familyfriendly East Dulwich. Leigh fell in love with the open-plan kitchen and beautiful garden of their rented Victorian terraced house, where the couple live with their two children, Lois, aged seven, and Ellie, three.
