HELEN DEALTRY The textile designer extraordinaire tells us all about her journey from rural England to the top of New York’s creative scene Words: SOPHIE BROWN Photographs: TARA DONNE
Growing up surrounded by the beautiful botanicals of the British countryside spurred on Helen Dealtry’s love of nature, which has inspired an extraordinary career in hand-painted floral prints with a quirky edge. After earning a BA in Textile and Fashion Design from Winchester School of Art, Helen landed a job as a trainee textile designer at a New Yorkbased studio where she worked her way up to creative director, generating an astonishing portfolio of over 4000 designs along the way. 26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 64
Having honed her craft working with several major interiors and fashion brands, Helen co-founded her own business in 2008 from a studio in Brooklyn, New York, that she shares with her dog, Dudley. When not working on projects for some of the biggest brands around, Helen designs her own range of bold, bright and beautiful scarves, as well as teaching floral painting classes. We sat down for a chat all about her style, making New York her home, and turning her passion into a business.
How did you kick off your career in textile design? After I graduated in 2000, I exhibited at the New Designers Show in London and this really great studio from New York offered me a textile design placement. I never had any intention of leaving the UK, and I thought ‘I’ll do it for three months, then I can always come back.’ But I did three months, then decided to do another three, and it just went on from there. While I loved it in New York, I decided that I wanted to go back and work in London just to see which city I fancied settling in. So I came back to the UK and designed in an amazing textile studio, but then I got offered a full-time job at the same place in New York. I went back and worked my way through that company to become Creative Director. I was there for eight years in-house before the opportunity to grow my own business arose, and I made the leap. What does a typical working day for you look like? I wake up at around 6.30am and check the fun stuff like Instagram and Facebook while I’m still sitting in bed. Then I get up

at around 8am, get ready, put the kettle on, make my tea, feed Dudley, and check my list of to-dos that I normally make sure to prepare the night before. Then I walk to the studio with Dudley, which really is an absolute pleasure. It’s always been my dream to have a dog and be able to take it to work. From then on my day is really just getting checklist things done. I’m usually at the studio until about 7pm, then I head home, write my to-do list for the next day, and then relax as much as possible.
How do you organise your time effectively in order to run a business? Dividing and conquering the week is what works best for me. It’s taken me a while to work this out, because organisation wasn’t a skill that came naturally to me. If I’m working on a project then I’ll set aside, say, four hours just to get it done – it has to be in chunks of time. I split my week into days. So Monday and Tuesday are about organisation, outreach and prep – getting all of the groundwork done. If I don’t do that, then

LIVING home tour
Black and white is injected with warmth in Emilie Rousseaux’s character home Words: HELEN SELF Photography: CORINNE SCHANTÉ-ANGELÉ Styling: MARIE LACIRE
Getting the keys to her new house in Amiens, France, on her birthday four years ago was the best present that designer Emilie Rousseaux has ever had. It’s been a highly significant one too, not only offering a huge renovation project for Emilie and her partner, Greg, but also turning into the inspiration and launch pad for her home décor and accessories brand, MilieO. The house is a typical old ‘Amiènoise’ home – narrow and long – and before Emilie and Greg
