Team Mollie have a collective problem – we can’t walk past a haberdashery shop without picking up some ribbons or a few buttons. They aren’t usually for any specific project, but to tuck away, knowing they’ll come in handy one day! This month’s cover gift, a set of gorgeous vintage-inspired buttons, isn’t solving our issues, but we’re determined not to hoard this set and to put them to good use. We’ve put together a project book with lots of different ways you can turn your buttons into beautiful spring makes – enjoy! Plus, don’t miss your last chance to enter the Mollie Makes Handmade Awards 2017 – the closing date is 18th May. Turn to page 13 to find out how to take part, and to discover the famous new face on our judging panel...

Describe your style in a few words. I’m all about colour! I love how it can lift your mood and evoke different emotions.
Defining your identity with...
CLARISSA HULSE The London-based textile designer talks about her passion for colour, and why having a clear USP is so important to her brand
You have a incredible studio space – does anyone else ever get to see behind the scenes? It’s great, isn’t it? During the week, we welcome shoppers to come and see where the magic happens. We do all the screen printing out the back, but the fabrics are so luxurious and tactile, it’s great for customers to be able to actually feel the products. That’s why two years ago we decided to add a shop front to the studio – that aspect is something you can’t experience when you’re shopping online.
Words: HOLLY JOHNSON Photographs: INGRID RASMUSSEN
If you’re a fan of bright, bold homeware, chances are you’re already familiar with the hallmark prints that adorn Clarissa Hulse’s luxury linens, wallpapers and fabrics. Just like Victorian painter Marianne North, Clarissa has an artistic obsession with the vibrant hues and patterns found in nature. Using photos and drawings, she captures flora and fauna, then uses old-school screen printing techniques to bring them back to life in her contemporary designs. Born in Prague, Clarissa had an eclectic upbringing, travelling to far26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 79
flung places and residing in various countries around the world. Her Greek mother was a keen gardener, and would teach Clarissa about different plant species while out walking in the countryside. It’s clear these childhood adventures inspire her work today – Clarissa’s latest range includes stunning grass silhouettes from South Africa (“a vast and beautiful country” that she longs to return to), and piercing, ombre sunsets inspired by her time living in Spain. We took a peek when we met Clarissa at her Islington design studio.
How did you originally get into working with textiles? I studied Textiles at Brighton Art College and graduated in the 1990s. I then moved to London to work as a freelance textile designer, before starting up my own studio with a successful scarf business. This evolved into designs for home accessories, and for the last 10 years I’ve been building up my business to be one of the most successful textile brands in the UK. Is there one thing that drew you to textiles over other art forms? I fell in love with textiles when I was 14

years old. I went to France on a student exchange program, and the girl I was staying with had a silk painting kit. I had a go and became obsessed, spending the entire week doing that and nothing else – the poor girl! I bought my own kit as soon as I got home and started hand-painting scarves to sell to my mum’s friends. So, I knew what I wanted to study from an early age. important to me. I spent most of my early childhood putting together colour palettes from Caran d’Ache pencils. Talk us through a typical working day for you – if there is such a thing! Every day is different! I get my two children – Angelica, 11 and Leo, 9 – up and ready in the morning, take them to school and head straight into the office. Then I can be doing anything from shooting a new collection to discussing updates to the website, printing and

LIVING home tour
Tamsyn Morgans’ Norwich home is colourful and eclectic, with a vintage vibe Words: LOTTIE STOREY Photography: MATT KEAL
Tamsyn Morgans sees diamonds in the rough. With a personal style that runs throughout her home, her Instagram, and even her clothes and make up, Tamsyn’s blend of colour, florals and femininity is an extension of her bright, cheerful personality. But, her three-bedroom Victorian abode in Norwich wasn’t always a reflection of this. Back in January 2014, it was a dark and dirty bohemian shared house. “It hadn’t been updated for years. The kitchen only had a sink

Tamsyn is a recent convert to the botanical trend, and has arranged plants around her mantelpiece to give a Victorian orangery vibe.
