When the sun’s shining, yarn crafts can be the last thing on your mind. But, Tiny Curl’s crochet watermelon doll (and Team Mollie’s squeals of joy when she hit our desks) prove they’re a year-round staple. Turn to page 18 to make your own amigurumi cutie, then hook up the ultimate summer accessory – our tasselled cover-up on page 39. Rather stick to sewing? Opt for the Instaworthy picnic blanket on page 54, then take it out into the garden with a glass of something chilled while you read the rest of the issue. I’m crushing on Betina Bianculli’s home on page 46, and hoping the macrame mag rack on page 51 will bring me one step closer to my tropical boho interior goals...

Bringing Scandi to the city with…
STINE DULONG Find out how SkandiHus ceramic designer Stine discovered true happiness and fulfilment through her creative work Words: COLETTE EARLEY Photographs: FIONA MURRAY
Danish ceramicist Stine Dulong is the founder of SkandiHus; a ceramics and pottery brand inspired by Scandinavian design. Stine grew up in Denmark and initially moved to London to do an exchange programme for six months as part of her degree, but she fell in love with the city and its multicultural richness, and never went back. 19 years later, she now calls London home. Stine decided her heart belonged to the arts, and so pursued a career as a full-time ceramic artist. “I worked as a business crime lawyer for years, never 26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 95
quite feeling fulfilled or happy. I always wanted to be an artist, but somehow ended up following a different path.” While still working as a lawyer, Stine took a pottery evening class. “I knew instinctively that I’d found where I was meant to be in life. I can’t really explain it other than there was simply no going back from that point onwards. That was about six years ago now.” We chatted with Stine at her studio to learn more about the story behind her ceramics, and find out why she’d always encourage others to follow their dreams.
Describe your style in three words. Minimal, functional and Scandinavian. SkandiHus reflects the process that I’ve gone through in my own life. I’ve slowed down and am much more mindful. How does a typical working day look? I get up at 7am and check my emails and social media as I drink my morning coffee. I live close to a forest so by 8.30am, I’m usually there with my dog, Alfie. My one hour morning walk in the forest has become essential to me and I can tell a significant difference in my ‘head space’ when I haven’t been able to do it. I think of it as my morning meditation. I’m usually at the studio by 10am and my day will consist of a mix of studio maintenance – reclaiming clay, packing kilns – making work, managing my studio assistants and responding to calls and emails as they come in. Some days I’ll have clients coming in; meetings with collaborators or individuals who want, for example, a full set of tableware, and want me to assist with picking colours. I focus on catching up on admin on Tuesdays, and on Wednesdays I’m in the studio on my own. I give myself one day a week alone in the studio to focus on

developing new work and having fun with the clay. I think it’s important to take time out to be an artist and remember that I do this because I have a love for making and developing. Otherwise, I’d end up ‘just’ running a business and while I do enjoy that part too, it’s paramount that I remain a maker first and foremost. No one day is the same for me and I like it that way. Where did you learn your craft? I wouldn’t be where I am today without the open access ceramics studio, Turning Subscribe at molliemakes.com
Earth, which was my pottery career springboard. The founder, Tallie Maughan, has also been an incredibly important business mentor to me. What inspires your design aesthetic? My designs are a reflection of the journey my life has taken and of who I am. I love the sea, I spent a lot of my teenage years sailing [Stine is twice Danish champion in the boat class Yngling]. The colours I use are reminiscent of the coastal region of Hellerup, near Copenhagen, where

Greenery meets bohemian in Betina Bianculli’s colour and culture-filled home Words: LARA WATSON Photography: RACHAEL SMITH
If you’ve ever wondered what a home filled with 165 plants looks like, this is it. Betina Bianculli and her seven-year-old daughter Manuela counted them the other day. “No wonder it takes an hour and a half to water them,” laughs Betina. “I don’t mind – they’re my babies!” If you’re familiar with Betina’s online lifestyle store, Frida Florentina, her popular Instagram of the same name (@fridaflorentina) and her pop-up shops around the city she now calls
