Happy birthday Etsy! That’s me on the set of Etsy’s first TV ad last year. To celebrate the makers’ online marketplace turning ten and its global Craft Party in June (see page 13), we’ve teamed up with them to bring you an issue full of projects from our favourite sellers on the site, as well as tips on marketing your own range of handmade goodies with success. We are all about inspiring you on Mollie Makes. Whether you’re working in a creative industry yourself or simply making for pleasure, this community has so much to share. I hope you’ll use this issue to inform, develop and show off your own unique style. How’s this to get you off to a flying start? Use promo code ‘molliemakes’ to get 20 free listings in your new Etsy shop at www.etsy. com/promotions. Looking forward to seeing all your #craftparty pics!

Elise Blaha Cripe A lot of lists, a little bit of fear and mountains of making are the secrets to this powerhouse crafter’s success Words: Lucy rice Photographs: elisE blaha cripe
If you’ve ever wished there were more hours in the day so you could just do X, Y or Z, then Elise has some advice: Just start. This mantra has helped the Californian grow her blog from the ground up – selling handmade items first via Etsy and then a self-hosted shop – into a viable career. And it’s all driven by one thing: a passion for making. Since starting her blog 10 years ago, Elise has explored making via various mediums. Quilting, knitting, scrapbooking, photography, painting, woodwork, ecourses… You name it, Elise 28 MOLLIEMAKES.com 54
has probably made it. What sets her apart, though, is her propensity to share the process, whether that’s through YouTube videos, blog walkthroughs, or on her weekly podcast, Elise Gets Crafty. Her step-by-step approach to achieving her goals is inspiring and ego-free. She’s the first to admit when something hasn’t worked out, and always finds a lesson in there to share – before striding onto the next project. We caught up with Elise to find out how she manages to get so much done. Hint: there’s a project for that!
Name your top three creative blogs? 3191 Miles Apart (www.3191miles apart.com), Emily Henderson (www. stylebyemilyhenderson.com) and A Beautiful Mess (www.abeautifulmess.com). Describe a typical working day. How do you balance working creatively with your family life? I keep a lot of to-do lists! We have childcare for our daughter two and a half days a week and I pile my projects and business responsibilities into that time. Usually, my days involve waking up with coffee and blog reading (while Ellerie eats breakfast and watches Elmo), then we’ll either run errands (if she’s home) or I’ll get to work (if she’s at daycare). I recently started only ‘working’ while at my desk. No more sending emails from my phone while cooking dinner – and it’s been great. Even though I work from home, having a solid line between being ‘at work’ and being ‘at home’ has helped my state of mind.
