Describe your style in a few words Colourful, fun, bold and full of stories.

Carving out your own niche with…

EMILY HOGARTH One of Britain’s most successful paper cutters tells us how she fell in love with this magical art form and built a thriving business Words: OLIVIA GORDON Photographs: CARO WEISS

Edinburgh-based artist Emily Hogarth’s creative motto is ‘make the everyday magical’ – and her artwork combines the delicacy and boldness of fairytale. Her intricate paper cuts, which take inspiration from the wild Scottish landscape and the ‘stories’ she sees around her, have established her as one of the modern leaders of the art form. Having stumbled across paper cutting as an art student, over the last decade Emily has established a busy career. Her clients include individuals who want bespoke private commissions, galleries 26 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 67

and shops, and brands including Cadbury’s, Nivea and Cole and Sons, for whom she has made advertising artwork. She has also written three books on paper cutting. Emily is also a mistress of social media. Her Instagram profile, filled with exquisite photos documenting her creative and home life, from family craft sessions to country walks, has won her more than 52,000 followers. She chatted to us over a cup of tea about what fuels her creative journey and how she found success.

How did you discover paper cutting? I remember making simple paper snowflakes and origami as a child – I’ve always loved paper. But it wasn’t until I went to art college to study textile design that I discovered paper cutting. To create bold textile patterns, I started making large stencils to print through onto fabric. For me, the stencils started to become more interesting than the fabric I was printing. So I developed my paper cutting skills through trial and error using any paper I could get my hands on, to make papercuts as standalone pieces of art. I didn’t know much about paper cutting in the beginning and it wasn’t as popular as it is now, so there wasn’t much information out there – I learnt as I went, which helped me develop my own style. What is it you love about this art form? I love that you can create something so delicate from a simple piece of plain paper. I also love the ‘negative’ space and always consider what I’m cutting out as much as what I’m leaving in. How did you build up a business? It didn’t happen overnight. After graduating, I won a design award which

got quite a lot of publicity, and was lucky to get some great work placements and freelance work for card companies such as Hallmark. I wasn’t earning a lot of money but I was enthusiastic and willing to learn. I created a simple website so people could see some of my work, and I started doing commissions for family and friends to begin with, and then their friends would ask for one – word of mouth is a great tool when starting out. The more popular paper cutting gets, the more work there is in general, so although there’s a fair amount

of competition, there’s enough work around to keep everyone happy. How do you balance your creative work with two small children? I don’t think I have the right balance at the moment! I don’t have any childcare for my littlest, so I only get to work on Saturdays when my husband is around, and most evenings, once everyone is in bed. We’re currently renovating our new home which will include a studio for me at the back of the garden – this will make the balance a

This page: The vintage chairs are from Craigslist, flea markets and eBay. “I don’t buy anything that needs repainting,” explains Rubyellen. “If I don’t like it as it is, I don’t get it. I love items looking worn.”

Family is the heart and soul of Rubyellen Bratcher’s eclectic home Words: SARAH MONTROSE Photography: KIMBERLY GENEVIEVE

Head to Rubyellen Bratcher’s suburban California neighbourhood, and you won’t be able to pick out her house – the area is full of simple, modern homes, built in 2007 on land that used to be filled with dairy farms. “We chose it because of the price and the interior of the house,” she tells us. “I love the big windows, our front porch and all the arches.” However, it’s the character that Rubyellen has brought to the inside that really shows off her creative flair.
