One of the biggest challenges for makers is finding new sources of inspiration. While Instagram and Pinterest are full of ideas, nothing beats getting out there to exhibitions and events. By the time you’re reading this, we’ll have had our annual dose of creativity at Blogtacular 2016 – it’s an amazing opportunity to discover fresh inspiration. With that in mind, we’ve filled this issue with projects and features to awaken your creative side. Whether you’re stitching Allison Sadler’s summery tassel cushion on page 63, hooking up to start our mermaid and friends cover project (#teamnarwhal) or admiring RICE founder Charlotte Guéniau’s Scandi-cool home on page 48, you can share your projects with us using #molliemakers.

Breaking free from fear with…

LOU GARDINER One of the most exciting names in contemporary embroidery shares the greatest lessons she’s learnt as a freelance creative Words: ANNE WOLLENBERG Photographs: SOPHIE BROADBRIDGE

From creating a maritime tattooinspired quilt for display in Liberty’s flagship Regent Street store to making beautiful handcrafted scarves and cushions, Lou Gardiner has spent her career demonstrating just how inventive and exciting embroidery can be. She’s stitched her way to exhibitions at the likes of the Saatchi Gallery, taught at the Victoria & Albert Museum and run thousands of creative workshops. Lou grew up on her family’s farm in Cheshire. Once a dairy farm, it’s now home to a herd of endangered Hereford 28 MOLLIEMAKES.COM 68

Cattle – plus Lou’s studio. “You’d never have envisaged this becoming a cosy studio with fairylights, as it used to be full of milk tanks and people in wellies,” she laughs. She fell in love with her craft while at Goldsmiths, University of London, where she studied textiles after completing an art foundation course at Manchester Metropolitan University. She later returned to MMU to do a masters in illustration. Fresh from a month in Brighton for Artists Open Houses festival, Lou and her dog, Billy Fox, joined us for a chat.

Describe your style in a few words My embroidery is an extension of every aspect of my personality, so it’s all the things I am: happy, sad, open, shy, loud, funny, thoughtful, all expressed in stitch. What’s a typical working day like? My studio’s always chilly so I put the radiator on, boil the kettle and put on the radio or some fabulous music. I try to always listen to Woman’s Hour. My dog Billy Fox keeps me company and helps keep me fit. Embroidery is wrecking my body, so I try to stay active with swimming, yoga and walking. I’m not good at switching off unless I go away. I recently went skiing which was brilliant as nobody asked me about sewing machines and I came back feeling refreshed. Has growing up on a farm shaped the way you work? Absolutely. Farming is full time as you’re caring for animals and they don’t switch off. It’s given me a strong work ethic and a can-do attitude. Work can be challenging, but you’ve got to get on and do it. How does your creative process work? Do you keep sketchbooks or use any online resources? It’s all in my head: a massive hotchpotch of ideas. I do sketch out big projects in

idea form, like the COLLECT show at the Saatchi Gallery in 2012 – I spent about two months drawing that sequence as it was very complex – and if it’s an illustration commission I’ll draw it out first. I’m quite envious of people who keep things in ordered files, but I’d rather spend my spare time going to exhibitions. How have collaborations such as your commissions for Liberty come about? I’ve always been keen on keeping my profile out there by doing things such

as going on Woman’s Hour and Kirstie’s Handmade Home. I’m passionate about marketing myself because that’s the only way I can survive as an artist and that is what’s got me noticed. It helps that my work is very niche. What tools or materials in your studio could you not live without – other than needle and thread? Masking tape and a black Bic biro, which is about as near to a stitched line as you can get in a drawing material.

Charlotte Guéniau’s home mixes Scandi style with English country quirkiness Words: DOMINIQUE CORLETT Photography: PERNILLE KAALUND

With its stripped floors, light and airy rooms and pared-back aesthetic, Charlotte Guéniau’s home is like a deep breath of fresh Scandinavian air. Located just five minutes from Odense city centre in Denmark, it’s a good example of why easy-to-live-with Scandi style has become so popular.
